DESIGN

CONCEPT

The design is inspired from the essence and the identity of Hijaz architecture, while reformulating it in an abstracted way that matches the spirit of the time. The Hijaz house was distinguished by beauty in its construction, elements and details. The design focused on the roshan element through the prominent wooden coverage that appears above the entrances of the residential units. This gives the design a unique identity, in addition to the thermal performance of this element as the roshan blocks the sun's rays from the intense entry inside the house. The design was also inspired by the mashrabiya element, forming prominent openings, which were used in the past to place pottery and glass vessels to cool drinking water. This element has been used to place green plants, which gives an attractive view of the facade while softening the natural air entering the rooms.

DESIGN

INSPIRATIONS

Co mmo n Mashr abiya place s

Mashrabiya is the prominent window that overlooks the street or the courtyard of traditional Arab houses. In the past Mashrabiya was the name given to the space, which is enclosed with wooden lattice openings , where jars of drinking waterDESIGN were putCONCEPT to cool. Cool air was created by the evaporation which is caused by the movement of air through the lattice openings (Fathy, 1986).

TECHNIQUES

Jeddah has hot and humid climate. Therefore, the design proposal seeks different possible solutions to maximize shading and natural ventilation. This has been achieved in the design through the following treatments: 1. The integration between the abstracted wooden Roshan and the double height entrance wall has many passive functions. This integration can increase comfort by shading, natural ventilation and increased thermal resistant. The entrance wall of the three houses have been treated similarly as a double skin façade having double glazed window, an air space, and a layer of laminated glass supported by the vertical and horizontal blinds of the Roshan screen on the outside.

Modern Geometric pattern.1

3. Shade from vegetation has been also applied by the use of evergreen trees around the building and on the roof top of the house. Another floating slab over the roof has been also designed intentionally to cast shadow and reflect the sun rays before they reach the roof. The shading slab has been provided with small openings to allow light to gently enter if this part of the roof will be used a sitting or gathering area.

4. The central stair well and the geometry of the design allow effective vertical ventilation. The stair has been designed with openings at the roof level that can exhaust air from the house through the stack effect.

2.The mashrabiya provided in the bedrooms has also another passive effect, since the delicate wood screen keeps most of the sun out, yet allows the breezes to blow through. This can be enhanced by placing Jugs of water and planters in the recessed portion of the mashrabiya.
