Multi-Functional Building

The Multifunctional Building This project was developed in the in the context of the final Master project, it started with a cultural and historical research on the subject of Subtraction as a methodology of project approach, mated with some reference projects and a small discussion of the related concepts. Later, these concepts were applied to an experimental case-study on a MultiFunctional Building located in Entre-Campos, Lisbon. The concept: “The Meaning of the Empty in Architecture� Subtraction as a concept to generate architectural space. Subtraction is here understood as a driving concept of the project, a method or mean of generating inhabit space. Therefore, this work pursuits the balance between a conceptualization of architecture and its constructive translation, by creating spaces that explore the sense of emptiness, negative shapes, materiality and density, using Subtraction as a tool to develop the project. The main goal of the project was to understand the role of this methodology in the creation on inhabit space and in which way could it create a specific social and cultural life based on an urban densification context.

The Arts School Dorms The Arts School project located in Alcântara, Lisbon, arises from the design of two main squares, one in a upper public level and the other in a lower and more private level. This two squares are surrounded by a low height building that embodies the Arts school and aim to be a point of regeneration and attraction of this area. After the design of the urban plan, it was develop in a more detail level the Dorms of the school The Concept: “The Box Inside the Box” For the design of the School Dorms, the main idea was to combine a modular structure of small wooden boxes that would suit the sleeping spaces and would be covered by a concrete plan. In this sense, the inhabit space is created by the movement and interaction of this boxes and the structure.

The new museum comes together as a landscape that reinterprets the concept of the existing garden and its accesses, as it simultaneously redesigns the current coastline, allowing the water to be part of the architecture composition. By reinforcing some of Paul Olsson's past intentions for this place, water comes out as sculptural element delineating inner space. In its territorial expression, this water crosses and interacts with other natural elements - stone, wood and 102.00 green structures - in a long wandering parterre between building and lake margin.
