PROJECTS

PROJECT i

Project I The lot located at the Currais Street in front of the Lusíada University

of

Porto,

is

an

abandoned lot with great potential for an urban park. Just having one access road and being surrounded by gables, the project developed started

with

the

creation

of

pathways that gave breadth and experience

to

the

site.

With

influences from the ‘Team 10’, including Charles Eames,

three

'transparent'

were

blocks

developed. These blocks are the new art and cultural space, such as residences for visitors and users.

PROJECT ii

PROJECT iii In the city center (Boavista), given the disorganization and disruption of the lot, I tried to reflect the best way to retrain and create an open space in city. The idea of continuity and closure of the block, comes with the need to drawn people to move in and create a higher POPULATIONAL DENSITY. building

For was

that

purpose,

designed

a

unfolding

several urban fronts, (October 5th Street and Mouzinho Albuquerque plaza) letting you choose from a wide but cozy place.

PROJECT iii

PROJECT iii Given the importance of Rio Douro, I studied the proposed lot for the intervention which we had to intervene. Following my research I drawn a green space, and an urban park that provided a lodge to referential Oporto and also Gaia. I also planned new social facilities by rehabilitating existing buildings and created new ones in order to revitalize the escarpment. Porto’s wine cellars were one of the references in both cases by their form and their roofs, because it is a main feature in the border city of Gaia. The city is organized, in a higher plan, with a more consolidated

mesh,

and

will

be

fragmented, as we approach the river. Since Pillar Sierra is a space with an enormous

collective

potential,

but

closed to the outside I proposed a broad space the gives people a privileged overview to the frequently unknown Rio Douro..

The initial idea was the restoration of the monastery itself , more precisely the third southerly most slightly distanced from the body adjacent to the church of Serra do Pilar. After a careful study of the church and monastery, I found that half of the building was built later than the church - (pointed out in a yellow rectangle on the right) . So, I approached the same language: two bodies fixed to the ground , lined with vertical openings recalling the old elevation . These two have bodies bearing an area of warehouses and loading and unloading areas. The longitudinal building made me work with metric rooms , workshops in a way to link them through interior galleries . The building entrance will appear through a ramp, that will appear softly on the ground. This details will guide people to a more welcoming space extended beyond the main volumetries to receive a reasonable number of users. After this first step we are led through a corridor to a larger reception area with a bright space that describes the entry a larger auditorium ( black box ) .

PROJECT iV

PROJECT iV The project developed in project IV was based on my master thesis. The thesis aims to show the importance of maintaining and protecting historical manifestations that are frequently lost in time. Our intervention takes place in Melgaço, a town located in the north of Portugal. Melgaço’s territory claims its own identity through its patrimony, history, culture and tradition, heritage. On daily basis we are surrounded by historical manifestations that proclaim and show us the need to be perpetuated as a reference. This recognition is frequently trigged by mankind that besides building it, it also has the power to destroy and forget it. Lar da Saudade, it’s a house that belongs to the Brazilian Modern Movement. The house and the belonging farm were requalified and then inserted in a cultural circle that already exists in Melgaço. We worked with a comparative method related to three reference cases: Araras Cultural Center, São Paulo, Brazil; SESC- Pompey fabric, São Paulo, Brazil; Serralves Foundation, Porto, Portugal and our practical case. As a result of the method used, we built a project that reaches all the demands and teachings established before and during the research. The main purpose of this research is to show and remind the architect’s ability and active awareness of its surrounding and also his active participation towards elements that enhance culture and preserve history.
