SteelHUB, an interconnectedII Steel workplace Case Contest

2012_LaMandanga INDEX

The world moves faster and faster and architecture and urbanism seem to be at a standstill. The virtual world passes in front of architects, robbing their own vocabulary (portal, window, site, ...) and these have not yet been realized this. The world as we know it is dematerializating and dismobilizating its self due to new technologies. Dematerialization refers to the physical disappearance of the city, a phenomenon that is justified by the fact that many physical services have been replaced by virtual equivalents. This will mean the disappearance of physical structures, usually buildings, which had traditionally played that role.Libraries will be databases where you can download books, museums, flexible and compressed digital displays where visitors can select the works that interest, and universities, virtual campus where lessons are taught by videoconference or face-to-face connections, etc. Demobilization comes from the fact that the computer is supplying many activities for which, in the traditional city, it was necessary to travel to places. The computer performs many different tasks without changing places. It will revolutionize the idea that links the different architectural spaces with the specificity of human activities on them are made. In buildings will be functionally hybrid zones, that depending on the time, must house production work, leisure or consumption activities. The work space that we imagine will not be separated or detached, any architecture can be an individual workspace. The types must be updated to respond to the new paradigm that is coming. Versatile places to put new technologies, which no longer respond to a single owner, community centers, parks, cafes, airports, stations,... But we believe that new technologies are far from replacing the group work, the face-to-face, so the physical space that will remain in business will be precisely this. Creative spaces, marketing, imagination. The remaining surplus. No more punch out. Therefore, we have designed a HUB, a minimal physical object capable of being updated, a portable interface to which each worker can provide or contribute with his special applications (Apps), anywhere in the world where they gather to work on a common project. The HUB is a neutral object that everyone can customize, update in time, and that all professions can used during the processes of creation and innovation. These creative process contain three phases, three phases which SteelHUB is trying to answer with different positions. The position A, 91x91x42cm, is the initial position that allows the user to carry the furniture and set an informal meeting around the furniture, a session of imagination, of Brain-storming. Position B, 91x91x74cm, allows session establish an achivement position, concretization, pipe lines, a seated working height with different surfaces. Position C, 91x91x90cm, allows to work up, do exhibitions, presentations, and a subsequent review or evaluation. The SteelHUB consists of two parts, the main box of 91x91x18’5cm, where the Apps and Pads are inserted, where is hidden the telescopic leg. The second box, 91x91x7cm, it is for infrastructure, where the insertion of the long battery life, the transformer and alternator, the modem, and connections to the power line. The cables that connect the two boxes, electrical and fiber optic go inside the telescopic leg. The Apps are devices which attach to the Hub, and have all the tools a specialist could need linked to each other. The Pads are surfaces, boards that give the user different possibilities of interaction between them. Whether in the home or workplace. The ambiguity of space makes this unit should be hybrid to respond to different times of the daily human life. Imagine, working groups scattered all over the world, interconnected, with their individual lives, have the possibility of going to work once a month, to meet in an architecture chosen for them, to move their applications with them in a light way, and get to work collectively in a space that just needs a hub to connect between them. Imagine...

STITCHING VIA LAIETANA

PROJECTS DESIGN IX_WITH LLUÍS VIVES & ANDREU ARRIOLA ETSAB

INDEX

13

Via Laietana is the direct result of an operation of emptyi Old City to enter traffic, a cut perpendicular creates a disconnection between the two separate parts, and an area banned for the pedestrians that gives rise to numerous side trips in order to prevent its passage. The project will give priority to this secundaries ways, following the main points of attraction of the Old City, while improving the section of the Via Laietana. The project will also solve a new urban center of urban activity, must rethink their role and the division of Via Laitana within Old Town. It’s been deleted 3 buildings (22.000m 2) and it’s been asked 28.000m 2 news, 23,000m 2 for offices and 5,000m 2 for sales, and the inclusion of a underground parking. The site is located at the beginning of Via Laietana, Junqueres Street crosses the action zone and the Palace of Catalan Music apears as a background and pretext for the rehabilitation area. It is proposed the pedestrian traffic as a generator reason for the arrangement and shape of the volume. Then, the result are three buildings that meet the three party wal appeared after the demolition. To give the public space enough importance is preferred let rise in height and leave free space. The volume further from Via Laietana will be higher, leaving also keep the original section, the office tower appears in a second view as an milestone as happens with other central points of the old city, such the churches.

14

15

The pedestrian street created, parallel to Via Laietana, promote the secondary walks of Old Town’s. His character sinuous appears from the circulation proposed as optimal, where the main lines of sight appear as a gap, discovering significants points as the Palau de la Música. The volume in front of the Palace reduces the section as it grows in height, leaving more light to enter and not losing the optimum proportion of a street in Old Town. The trade appears in the lower floors providing of activity to the street. From the new sinuous street appears the main entrances of the shops and offices, to provide it with great activity. The point where converge the three volumes, is where take place the access to the main shops and the Metro Line 4 Urquinaona, absorbed by the building, where from the same metro access is possible to enter into the shops.

STRUCTURE FOR A GARDEN CENTER

PROJECT DESIGN VII_ WITH RICARD BALCELLS ETSAB INDEX

21

The site is located at the exit of UllĂ , a small village just outside of Torroella de MontgrĂ (Costa Brava). The plot has all the south facing a roundabout and the road that connects Torroella with Figueres (the nearest big tonw). A little stream crosses the plot and regulations forbids doing any act. The project should solve a portion of outdoor nursery (4000m 2) a greenhouse (700m 2) a shaded garden (700m 2), a volume shop, workshop and storeroom (200m 2). The three volumes are located in three ends in order to stretch customers to go round the land and crosses the display areas for plants outdoors. The entry is made laterally in relation to parking, where the volume of shop / workshop / storage receives the customer through a porch, and preparing to go out and go round the plot.

22

23

Looking for a attractive design, capable of becoming a lure. It is required a structure of short duration and build in dry. Therefore, we propose a structure that touches the ground as little as possible, but to be able to cover the required m 2. The idea of planting trees (planted foundations), where his “top” is covering a large area, is made with a pillars of laminated wood, with a joint anchored to the ground. Four beams born from the top and go ahead making a cross inside a square that are supported by steel tensors that counter horizontal efforts.

24

The union of the different joint structures is always a metallic articulation, that allows a easy disassembly. The plastic of the greenhouse is fixed on the gutters that collect water from rain and leads it to the irrigation pool. The facade is independent of the structure, it is a skin that wears a different structure depending of the shaded garden (with a coating of wood) or of the greenhouse (with polycarbonat).

BANC SABADELL'S BANK OFFICE

PROJECT DESIGN VII_WITH RICARD BALCELLS

ETSAB INDEX

27

The Banc Sabadell office bank will be placed in Castellterçol, a small town 50km from Barcelona, and the site is located next to the road that cross Castellterçol towards Moià, located in a residential area of low density. Only one CAP and one hostel break the existing typology. 50% of the plot should be allocated to public space, so the most appropriate place to be placed is near to the street that connects with the road, being visible from the AII. The project must solve a bank office of 350m2 and a house for the bank manager of 100m2 + 100m2 garden. The first idea is to work with the outside image, emphasizing the materiality of the load-bearing walls with a dark brick, whose origin the old image of the plot, where the presence of a stone wall was characteristic. The structure of the building is supported by bearing walls of brick where the laminated beams are leaned. The walls are placed openly in the case of the bank, creating different spaces and routes, which dominates the large central space for costumer service, and follows a spiral to the bank’s private parts. In the case of housing a large wall surrounds the house creating a courtyard where all the important rooms of the house enjoy. 28

LIVE IN DIAGONAL

PROJECT DESIGN VI_ WITH JOSEP BOHIGAS ETSAB INDEX

31

The project demands to build 60 dwellings, 30 of 40m2, and 30 of 90m2, and the inclusion of a ground floor parking + library. The site is located on the frontier between Gràcia and the Eixample district, between street Bailén and street Quevedo. The proposal attempts to adapt to the difference in height of both urban fabrics suggesting a striking interior facade while blends in with Gràcia, because it will a relevant image from the square John Lennon. These exposed facades are very common in the urban fabric and provide a more human view and explain the personality of the building’s inhabitants. The project attempts to reproduce this chance and make it a virtue. The two facades of the project will be totally different in order to respond to different environments.

32

Gràcia is an urban fabric maded by the repetition of its party walls, its an urban morphology well recognizable. So trying to integrate the proposal in a plot with a unusual sizes in Gràcia, we thought on the possibility of bearing walls... but giving another turn of screw. We had folde d the party walls in order to create new spaces between the bearing walls. The housing cluster come out of the module (4x5m) created from this deformation, which all fit like a ‘Tetris’.

33

OF

L I V I N G S Retihinking the sort of people that can occupate a flat, and the temporality of his necesities, we realised that our live is a constant period of changes, and all the optioins should be care about, wiht a flexibility of spaces and of management.

The dwellings floor plan comes out from the minimum cell proposed of 4x5m, doubled and dislocated diagonally, in order to create a deep space giving a bigger house feeling than a simple house of 40m2 divided with a lot of walls. The entrance by the footbridge with a intermediate space associated to the kitchen, enlarge the house area towards the footbridge creating a neighborSimple core, useful and singulars reltation area every two houses. spaces serviced by others. The 100m2 dwelling come out from the same cell aggregation, but multiplied 6 times, where the last piece is also linked to the footbridge, in this case An extra singular space shuold be a indoor footbridge, where differents wells is used to oxygenate and bring shared with the community in order light inside. to participated in it. The sum of schemes created differents shared spaces that interlink the dwellings.

34

35

One of the project’s strong points are its facades, always playing with the thickness of the windows that become functional and symbolic elements. Also it wants to be a wink to the originals windows from the house will be demolished. In Bailén’s facade where all the windows go outward to create rhythms and vibrations but also follows the modulation of the adjacent Cerdà Eixample’s facades. In Quevedo’s facade the windows are introduced inward, creating a inside zone for storing in the living room and a very useful thickness in the footbridge.

Photo from Quevedo street, coming from John Lenon square, where we can apreciate the old building system of housing in Gràcia Neighbourhood. The brightness is introduced through the windows passig across the threshold, adding special characteristic values.

36

The design of the window comes out directly from the original view of Quevedo’s Street. We tried to transport thats special values we recognized there to the new building. The facade is made by a ventilated facade of natural stone siding.

URBAN REFORM

URBAN DESIGN V_WITH MANUEL RUISANCHEZ ETSAB INDEX

41

The project aims to reform the polygon of Can Sallarès in Villafranca del Penedes. This is a classic housing polygon of the modern movement, with buildings on piles and faced to the sun. But a school was placed on later, in the middle of the group and disrupts the established relationships and it leaves residual spaces. It is about removing the school, and add a library, community center and some offices, public housing and underground parking. Must rethink both the ground floor area, furniture, flooring, flowerbeds ... Just arriving and entering this site, you realize the great value and power that take the spaces between pillars and the views through them. The project recognizes the direction of large volumes built and take as an idea of placing all the volumes of new creation diagonally in relation to existing ones, creating a new axis that crosses the housing polygon by the middle that help to drive the flow. As a result of removing the school a central space of uncontrolled dimensions is created. In order to control that space and make it the social center we place on there the facilities and shops. As well, the project does not have a clear center, but the large axis is the its engine, and two squares next to the library will make gathering places. The square on the right has to save a considerable slope, which is solved with a ramp and wooded terraces. The ground floors were a major subject of study, the game that gave the existing pillars forest has been tried to take advantage of. There were few shops, misplaced in our view, because impeding flow provided by pillars. So, trying to take advantage of the freedom of the ground floors, the planned new commercial we played moving them under the buildings in order to conserve pillars of the vision and create useful the porches. In contrast of taht, the new volumes dancing over their ground floors creating new porches and defining significant points in the perspective.

2 0 1 1 URBAN GROWTH IN ESPARRAGUERA

URBAN DESIGN IV_WITH ENRIC SERRA ETSAB INDEX

45

The project includes a housing growth of 1050 dwellings in Esparraguera with a 0.51 density. This site is placed on the southern edge of Esparraguera, which are very important the connections and the continuity with the existing city. As a characteristic point of the area we have to work with is its pronounced topography. Following these premises, we tackled the project about a vertical axis steped, that will give as a result some meeting places and centers of low activities that will provide a very significant new image of the new sector of Esparraguera. The ascension of these squares beat the rythm of the route from the tertiary facility (linked to national motorway) to the central point, a commercial complex and a social housing, that are located in the union of the town’s main street with the new sector. The northern part is solved by a system of paired blocks that are articulated from a large underground basement which includes a variety of activities. The base is the solution to the slopes and the union of two systems or ways of dealing with the project, such as entire blocks in U and open city. The basement builds a conventional facade for the city, while providing of parking facilities, as well as an area of commerce on Main Street. The city limits are solved with an open terraced park that looks the town of Olesa and towards the main visual reference, the mountain of Montserrat. In the south, the set can be split into six units in block U open in South West (divided into 2 or 3 pitches). The system will just settle for a small tower and a basement that articulate a hierarchical relationship of pubic and private spaces. The basement solves the housing parking and includes activities such as workshops or local businesses staple, and some facilities. These are used as entire blocks forming a pattern that fits to the context, creating a complexity of public spaces, forming a street which vary throughout its development. .
