Being in the holistic field has not made me immune to stress, cravings, habits, patterns, and my relationships with food. In her article, “What are Cravings Telling You?”, Maryann Raiola, holistic health counselor and owner of The Organic Warehouse in Bartonsville, Pa, speaks about our relationships with the food we eat, and the emotional and physiological affect food has on us when we are in an out-of-balance state. The holidays are a stressful time for so many, and with the economic crisis, additional stress is placed on the spirit of the holiday. During times of stress, our body responds beautifully by releasing a hormone called Cortisol (sometimes referred to as the “stress hormone”). Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands and helps to regulate blood pressure, metabolize glucose, release insulin to maintain blood sugar levels, supports our immune system, our inflammatory response and our response of “fight or flight.” Cortisol is necessary for proper physical function, and healthy in small amounts. When the body perceives stress on a physical or psychological level, the fight or flight response is activated and the body will release higher levels of Cortisol providing a boost of energy and the ability to fight or run. The body goes through a relaxation phase once the stress dissipates and all systems return to normal. It is important for our body to return to normal after a stressful

event. Unfortunately, in our current high-stress culture, the body’s stress response is activated so often that the body does not always have a chance to return to normal, resulting in a state of “chronic stress.” Imagine, if you will, when stress is a constant — balance or homeostasis is never reached and Cortisol is being constantly produced. High levels of Cortisol are harmful to the body and can cause weight gain, which will usually be seen in the abdominal area. This will have a greater negative effect than fat stored in other areas of the body. Health problems

associated with increased belly fat are heart attacks, strokes and metabolic disorders generally caused by plaque buildup in the arterial walls and type-2 diabetes . Other negative effects such as impaired cognitive performance, decrease in bone density and muscle tissue, an imbalance in blood sugar (hyperglycemia), suppressed thyroid function, and high blood pressure, lowers your immunity and inflammatory response (slowing down the process of wound healing). To keep Cortisol levels under control, the body’s relaxation response must be activated. There are many techniques and services available to help your mind, body and spirit avoid reaching those high levels of stress. They also provide insight to lifestyle changes such as meditation, massage, exercise, journaling, yoga, reiki, listening to music, tai chi, sex, singing your favorite holiday songs, playing with your kids, sleigh rides, building a snow man, having a snow ball fight — and of course dietary changes. Studies have shown higher levels of stress can cause overeating and food choices that are higher in carbohydrates than people who secrete less Cortisol. Of yourself through a new book by Maile Andrus...DAO OF DONUTS When we are in the midst of any situation, whether our obstacles are large or small —merely annoying or very painful— we can still find joy in something as simple, and as divine, as a donut.

Maile writes:

In the midst of life’s greatest challenges, joy can be found—now! The key lies in being open to the joy, being willing to see it and feel it, and recognizing our worthiness to experience it. The Dao of Donuts is the blessing of living in the now by being present and by giving thanks for all things.

As Les Brown says in the Foreword:

Dao of Donuts is an invitation to make a heartfelt connection with a community of like-minded people. It gives women permission and courage to step into their power and live the kind of lives they were meant to live. Not cookie-cutter spirituality or motivation, it encompasses a bigger picture by helping readers to expand and broaden their minds and their lives.

What others have to say about Dao of Donuts:

The Dao of Donuts will absolutely delight your soul. It is filled with simple truths that will allow you to reconnect with what you have been missing. The Dao of Donuts is better with everybite. —ErinSaxton, CEO Newswire KrispyKremes® for a hungry woman’s soul.

Experiment with dishes a few weeks ahead and test them out on your immediate family. If you have fresh, organic local ingredients to start with, you may find as I have that no one misses the extra salt, sugar or fat. Without these ingredients, the taste of the whole foods can be fully appreciated. If you are inviting guests, you are apt to find some who have discovered they are gluten sensitive (See Susannah Pitman’s article) or cannot have wheat, corn, cow’s milk or soy. Try to make a simple protein dish, vegetables and dessert that are appealing to everyone so these people will feel comfortable eating at your table without having to make the choice of not eating anything or having eater’s remorse the next day. Bonus: Cooking with fewer ingredients cuts down on prep time. Ideas: 1.Roasted turkey, rubbed with seasoning. Place twigs of fresh rosemary under the skin. If you have a convection oven you do not even have to baste to have a moist bird. 2. Brussel sprouts and/or a variety of simple hearty vegetables (e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, carrot sticks) basted lightly with olive oil and roasted at 400 degrees F for about 30 minutes, turning after 15. 3. Put salad ingredients in separate bowls (Romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, radish, avocado slices with lime juice, red onions, scallions, all your favorites). Have a bottle of extra virgin olive oil and vinegar on the table along with one or two salad dressings. Let

2. Add boiling water and salt, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 4. While rice is cooking, heat a heavy oven proof frying pan and sauté onions in oil until translucent (about 2-3 minutes). 5. Add celery and stir for another minute. 6. Add mushrooms. Continue stirring until mushrooms soften and give off water. 7. Stir in pecans, parsley and remaining spices, cover, turn off the heat and let sit until the rice is done. 8. Stir cooked rice in with other ingredients, cover and put in preheated oven for about 15 minutes. You can substitute walnuts or almonds for pecans or leave out if guests have tree nut allergies. You can use well washed fresh cranberries if you like in place of the nuts. Rosemary can be substituted Directions 1. For several years, I often noticed I had bloating after eating. I figured this was normal, possibly the result of occasionally eating too much. Then for the past year, I noticed my bloating would be so severe that often people mistook me as being pregnant. While discussing this with my personal trainer, she and I both agreed that something was wrong. She had a hunch that I may have a negative reaction to gluten. Judith Gisser’s comments: Gluten can commonly cause bloating, a variety of digestive disturbances and other seemingly unrelated symptoms, but it is not the only possible culprit. The more I thought about what my personal trainer had said, the more it resonated with me. I had other symptoms that were more subtle – occasional low energy, minor hair loss, slightly ashen skin and cloudy thinking. I noticed that these symptoms were significantly worse after eating wheat products, particularly pasta and pizza. However, I also noticed some of my worst bloating came after eating sushi, and I figured that was from the high sodium in the soy sauce. I decided to contact my doctor to get tested for Celiac Disease, an autoimmune disease in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged from eating gluten, resulting in malabsorption of nutrients. The blood test for anti-glidian anti-bodies if positive tells you that your body is having an

autoimmune reaction to foods containing gluten (wheat, spelt, rye, barley and to a lesser degree oats). Blood tests for gluten intolerance are not 100% accurate. To make a definite diagnosis of Celiac disease requires a biopsy of the intestinal mucosa, usually done at the same time as an endoscopy. My doctor asked me several questions about my diet and my symptoms. She agreed that I should be tested for Celiac Disease but that even if it comes back negative I may still

have it. She also said that she has noticed a rise in people being diagnosed with Celiac Disease or having problems with wheat. I got my blood tested and it came back negative for the disease. Even though the test came back negative, I decided to give up gluten and see if I felt better. If the blood test is negative, you might still be gluten sensitive, but consider you could instead be reacting to other proteins found in wheat. You may react to some gluten containing grains and not to others for this reason. After about a week, I notice major changes in how I felt. I had much less bloating, but occasionally it persisted, especially after eating sushi. It wasn’t until a friend told me that soy sauce has wheat in it that I realized soy sauce caused my bloating after eating sushi. When I eliminated the soy sauce from my sushi, I didn’t have any bloating. I also noticed I had more energy, my skin looked brighter and smoother, my hair started getting thicker, and I felt clearer in my thinking. As time progressed, I also noticed I was sleeping better, my eyes were brighter, and my menstrual cycle had fewer symptoms. I decided I would stick with a gluten free diet. People who eliminate foods that seem to cause bloating are often surprised at what other diverse symptoms also disappear.

Sometimes people’s intentions were good but put me in an awkward situation. It was not uncommon for my new diet to become the center of conversation at the dining table, which sometimes was awkward as some people saw the diet at ‘weird’. A family member went so far as to buy gluten free food for when I come over. I appreciated her thoughtfulness tremendously, but some of the gluten free products were loaded with sugar or were things I would not have eaten even if I were eating gluten, such as sugar-laden cereal.

There were some interesting social reactions that came up with eating gluten free, which I did not expect. I told people ahead of meeting them for dinner at their house that I was no longer eating gluten. I would ask that they not change what they planned on serving but not to be offended if I did not eating some of what they made. Thankfully, everyone was very accommodating about this, to the point where one friend of mine baked me gluten free brownies from scratch so that Many foods labeled “glutenI wouldn’t be left out from dessert. cause a roller coaster effect on blood sugar. A wide variety of whole foods can be eaten in place of gluten grains or any other food your body responds to with unpleasant symptoms. All processed foods are at best minimized in a healthy diet. Always read labels carefully with an eye at the Protein/Carb ratio along with the list of ingredients. I did make an agreement with myself that if I was out to dinner and there was very little option of eating gluten free that I would eat gluten rather than starve. I was surprised that on a day trip down to the Jersey shore that I was able to find salad on the boardwalk. The famous huge

Many times the chicken or fish dishes are breaded or pasta is part of the meal. Most restaurants have been accommodating when I have asked for substitutes, but it makes ordering a little more thoughtful. With an increase in people recognizing gluten and other food reactions, restaurant personnel are used to being asked about ingredients. Do you remember the last time you craved something sweet or did you crave a juicy steak with all the trimmings? Was it one of those days….. you know a day where you feel overwhelmed or stressed? Yes, we have all been there and with the holidays quickly approaching it can mean an over booked schedule, traveling and economic concerns. These are perfect ingredients for our bodies to fall out of balance. Our bodies are highly intelligent, the human body is the most efficient and intelligent engine you could ever hope to have. It works to maintain perfect balance or homeostasis all the time; we keep a temperature of 98.6 degrees, we breathe, we digest our food, we sleep. However when something is not properly balanced our body sends us a red flag. If we have any changes within our system such as a shift in blood sugar levels or hormones we will get a message, perhaps in the form of a craving. “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”Hippocrates. We each have a personal relationship with the food we eat. The minute we put food in our mouth and begin to chew digestion begins; the food travels to our stomach and then becomes part of our blood and our cells. The food we eat becomes us. We feel completely different when we eat leafy green vegetables than we do when we consume a super-sized fast food meal. When we are feeling over-

utes to acknowledge the craving and see what it is telling you about your body. Is the craving a reflection of an emotional need or a physical need? By deconstructing the craving you can help your body find the proper recipe for wellness. Consider nourishing your body with proper water, nutrition and love. As you move through your day and experience cravings try to hear what your body is telling you. You are taking steps towards wellness by listening to your body and nourishing your soul.

Perhaps we are using food as a reward for celebrating a job well done; seeing ice cream or the candy bar as a well deserved treat. Has there been a time when you were sad or lonely and really wanted a hug? When the hug was not there did you replace it with food? The food we choose and our cravings tell us something about how we are feeling both physically and emotionally. So what do we do to achieve better balance and limit our cravings? The first step to finding balance is being aware of your craving. Take a few min-

Examining the Practice of Chiropractic: A Skeptical Approach by Dawn J. Benko Even before any firsthand experience, I was leery of chiropractic. I’m not really sure where my suspicions originated. I have come to learn that the American Medical Association waged a decades long battle against chiropractic, going so far as to establish the “Committee on Quackery” in 1963 in an attempt to eliminate the practice. In 1987, the District Court in Illinois found that the AMA and many of their associates had violated federal anti-trust laws, and they were forced to end their campaign against chiropractic. Perhaps the AMA’s campaign had an effect on me. Whatever the case may be, my own experience served to reinforce my fear and mistrust. A 2007 back injury, however, has me seeking alternatives to conventional medicine and taking a second glance at chiropractic. With all this in mind, I recently sat down with Dr. Tracey Mendel, who has a chiropractic practice in Sparta, NJ. I asked for her thoughts on my experience and why I should ever go to a chiropractor. I told her about my previous

my neck and shoulder out of whack, but it just didn’t ring any bells. I know, you’re probably thinking, “Maybe your mother dropped you on your head, when you were a baby.” It’s possible, but the chiropractor found other “abnormalities” that wouldn’t be explained by that. But don’t worry, he could fix them all. I just sat there, silently, thinking to myself, “This is gonna totally suck.” He had me lie down on his table and began to slowly turn my head from side to side. Suddenly, without warning or explanation, WHACK, he cracked my neck. Pain shot up and down my cervical spine. My legs flew up in the air, narrowly missing the chiropractor’s head, as I yelled an obscenity and called him a less than flattering name. I was a little more than upset. However, when I got up, the pain was gone. The chiropractor told me I would have to see him three times a week for the rest of my life. I guess that’s how long he figured it would take to fix everything that was wrong with me. I wouldn’t commit to the rest of my life, but I decided the results warranted at least one more try. Unfortunately, about fifteen minutes after I left the office, the pain was back full force. Nonetheless, I kept the follow-up appointment but got the same result. I ended up

going to a conventional doctor, who gave me a collar and anti-inflammatory medication. In a couple of days, I was feeling pretty good. After relaying this experience to Mendel, she gave her thoughts on what was wrong with the chiropractor’s approach. “The first mistake the gentleman made,” says Mendel, “was that he just did not communicate with you what he was doing. I painfully communicate every little thing. Also, I do a thorough history and examination of the patient, and if it’s something I feel is beyond my scope, I will refer the patient to the proper physician or modality.” She says that she has people come in who are in an enormous amount of pain, and they may need some muscle relaxants or pain medication before she is able to get in and work on them. Mendel also tailors her treatment to the patient. In regard to my experience, she says, “I may not do that kind of procedure that first day. I may do lots of massage and stretching, almost preparing the area before I do that kind of procedure.” There are also instruments that she will apply to an area that she wants to move instead of using the type of manual adjustment that I experienced. “There’s no rotation, and no scare,” she says. In regard to some chiropractic claims of being able to cure whatever ails you, Mendel avoided being critical; saying basically that there are dif-

ferent philosophies regarding chiropractic. She says that she attended a chiropractic college that was interested in integrating all professions and working with medical doctors in the best interest of the patient. She says she will be the first to say, “Let’s try it. We’ll see if it works and, if not, I’m going to find you some help.” She believes that you should feel some results within four to six visits and that you should only go as long as it’s helping. “If I’m seeing you three times a week this week, why three months from now am I still seeing you three times a week?” Mendel asks. She says she would feel that she is not really helping and that she is no better than an Advil. Mendel also feels that it is important to educate the patient. If she is continually having to adjust a certain spot, she will ask what the patient is doing during the day that may be exacerbating the problem? What can be done to avoid or lessen those things? Mendel feels that what is most important is what is in the best interest of the patient, and while she will refer patients to conventional practitioners, the opposite is not always true. It is her belief that there are plenty of people to care for and work with and everyone should work together. “We all take the Hippocratic Oath, but do we practice it?” she asks. “Do you have the best interest of the patient in what you’re doing? The answer should always be ‘Yes’.”

When I was told that this issue of MARCI was about nutrition, I wasn’t quite sure what to write about. Then it hit me: Rather than write about food for thought, I should write about thought… for food. I’m teaching a new workshop on the Power of Affirmation entitled “New Thoughts, New Lives”. It is an ongoing series of discussions, including the mechanism of how thought works in the body. I have long believed that we have a physical anatomy that is correspondent to a spiritual or energetic anatomy. (See the works of Louise L. Hay or Caroline Myss.) When something happens in our body, it is a reflection of what is already present in our energy field. But what is the process by which spirit or energy develops into an event, illness or healing? Part of that process is thought converting into form. Whenever we have a thought, it is comprised of electricity, magnetism, and an array of chemicals – a combination of hormones that tells the body what the mind is thinking and where to apply it in the body. This sys-

tem adapts to match the type of thought we are experiencing. In simple terms, if we have a happy thought, there is one set of chemicals or electromagnetics, if we have a sad thought, there is a different set. The same is true for every thought we experience. It’s been said that we have about 60,000 thoughts in a

MARCI™

day, although this statistic varies depending on which source you reference. The most important point is that most researchers agree that the thoughts we had yesterday are virtually identical to the ones we are having today. We do learn new things, but the underlying script of what we have believed since childhood plays over and over again in our minds for decades. This could be great if your underlying script is positive; but what if it isn’t? We can become unbalanced like a pair of justice scales with too many coins on one side. This is the underlying mental mechanism for most of our ills – physical, mental, spiritual, even circumstantial. When they tell you “it’s all in your head”, they are wrong; but a significant part of it is. If we see the world as an unfair place, we will have one set of experiences based on that belief. If we see the world as a beautiful place, our experience will reflect that beauty. If we see ourselves as trapped, judged, unhappy, angry, bullied, victimized, well… you get the idea. Since thoughts cont’d on next page

the scale represents sadness or anger, we begin to put the opposite thought forms, happiness or peacefulness, on the other side. We change our minds to a new way of thinking and thus change what we believe, which in turn changes our experience. A belief is nothing more than a thought that we have over and over again until it takes hold. When we are children, we’re told about Santa Claus and we believe without question that he exists. Then after a certain age, we are told this is a myth. And if we choose to believe from then on that he does not exist, we have simply changed our thoughts. Santa hasn’t changed, our thoughts have. That’s how most of our beliefs begin; they are handed down to us by the world into which we are born. It is up to us to decide which ones we will keep and which ones we will leave behind. Or as Wayne Dyer puts it, “We don’t attract what we want, we attract what we are.”

Feed Your Head cont’d

are magnetic, we attract what we think about whether we want it or not. This is why the popular book and DVD The Secret teaches that if we think about debt, we attract debt rather than what we are seeking, which is abundance. Even if we are asking to receive money, our thoughts are on the next bill, how little money is coming in, etc., and so that is our experience. What is really going on inside us is a graphic demonstration of not living in the present moment; how we travel from where our physical body is located to wherever our minds may wander. If you sit still for a moment and ask yourself where your attention is, you will see that it is all over the place. Some of it is sitting with you, but most of it is anywhere else. Your memories, conflicts, future plans, past hurts, things you need to do, all take your attention out of present time. And that is what the New Age is all about: gathering our fragments and bringing them back to what is whole. Loving the Self enough to recognize when you are not in present time and then calling your Spirit back to where you are. Without an awareness of this truth, healing, even life itself, becomes a difficult journey. Let’s go back to the 60,000 repeated thoughts. We hold on to them because they are

comfortable, habitual, familiar. We believe that things are the way they are because of a lot of things: where we were born, our family, which town, country, language, social, political, religious background we grew up with, what school, which friends, our occupation, our passion – all these contribute to the kinds of thoughts we experience. We are the sum total of everyone and everything that has come before us, and our thoughts are a reflection of which road we chose to travel this time around. “Each celestial body, in fact each and every atom, produces a particular sound on account of its movement, its rhythm or vibration. All these sounds and vibrations form a universal harmony in which each element, while having its own function and character, contributes to the whole.” – Pythagoras 550 BC Fitness is a way to keep our bodies functioning well, or in balance. One way to determine if we are ‘fit’ or in balance is to maximize the connection between the voice, the ear, and the brain. (A series of 5 laws indicating that the voice produces what the ear hears and the ear emits the same stressed frequencies as the voice—“The Tomatis Effect” and “The Davis Addendum to the Tomatis Effect”i). Our bodies emit energy in the form of frequency, creating our own unique symphony of sounds. This symphony sounds best (and the body functions best) when the frequencies are ‘in tune’. Fitness can then be equated with being ‘in tune’. The best way to determine which frequencies or sounds are ‘out of tune’ is by testing the connection between the voice, the ear, and the brain. By finding out where and how the voice, ear, and brain do not maximally support each other, a program of sound-based therapies is introduced. Sound-based therapies have been defined as introducing sound vibration to the body using special equipment,

programs, modified tones/ beats, the need for which is identified with appropriate testing.ii There are many different sound-based therapies and when starting a program, the correct order of the application of the therapies will provide maximum change. The therapy application process utilizes The Tree of Sound Enhancement Therapy®iii. This tree analogy reflects the ‘sense of hearing’ in the Roots of The Tree, general sound processing skills in the Trunk of The Tree, specific auditory processing skills in the Leaves and Branches of The Tree, and body maintenance and support in the Head surrounding The Tree.

By encompassing all pieces, the person remains fit and in balance. There are many different possibilities of sound-based therapies to support maintaining fitness. Some of the sound-based therapies that are available are: Auditory Integration Training: a listening program developed by Dr. Guy Berard, France, that repatterns how a muscle in the middle ear sends sound vibration to the inner ear. This method is especially helpful for people with one type of hearing hypersensitivity. Once the hypersensitivity has been eliminated, the person is more comfortable with sound input, processes sound more clearly, and can perceive the subtleties of the rhythms, pitches, and inflections of external sound, especially language. This therapy supports fitness by re-establishing ‘hearing responses’ to sound input which can help the person feel better about themselves and the world around them. The Tomatis® Method: a listening program developed by Dr. Alfred Tomatis, France, that retrains how the ear and the body receive, process, and utilize sound stimulation for all aspects of living. It has applicability for people of all ages because it provides stability for the body’s foundational connections. It uses air and bone conduction response to sound and works towards stabilizing the body’s response with voice control. With the Voice-Ear-Brain con-

Sound therapy helps the body maintain fitness but ‘retuning’ how the body receives and emits our natural frequencies. The ‘retuning’ occurs when the laws of the Voice-Ear-Brain Connection are applied. Joshua Leeds, in his book “The Power of Sound” says, “Sound is an ally; it always has been. The question is whether we are ready to embrace it as such.”iv When looking for a natural approach to maintaining fitness, connecting the voice, the ear, and the brain with a sound-based therapy is an alternative approach waiting to be embraced.

Dear Reader, Ask. Believe. Receive. While it seems simple enough, activating the Law of Attraction is not necessarily a walk in the park. You must own it and take responsibility for every step of the process. First, there’s the responsibility that comes with asking. When you ask the universe for something, you must ask for something that’s in alignment with who you are and what you’re willing to contribute back to the planet. Your gifts are not for you to keep — they’re given to you with other people in mind. When you’re given a gift, the real question is, who are you going to bless with that gift? When I was in college, I realized in a moment of prayer that my gift of speech wasn’t about me. My gift of speaking and inspiration came to me and through me to touch someone else. So when you ask for something from the universe, remember, it’s coming to you and through you to bless someone else. Secondly, when you make a request to the universe, you must eliminate all doubt. The universe is not to be doubted. God is not to be doubted. You must believe with unwavering faith that the universe will fulfill your desires when you are ready to receive them. Which means, finally, that you must give yourself permission to receive. How many opportunities have passed you by because either you weren’t or you didn’t

feel worthy to receive? There was a time when I was asking the universe for love. I believed I wanted love. Yet when people wanted to love me, I deflected their intentions and affections, because I wasn’t ready to receive love. It’s your responsibility to activate all three steps of the Law of Attraction — and all at the same time — because without even one working, all invariably fail. So when you ask, ask for things that are in alignment with who you are and ask to serve the universe. When you believe… believe as if it is so. Have unwavering faith in relationship to it. Finally, be ready to receive. Give yourself personal permission to own, embrace, and celebrate whatever greatness the universe is bringing to you as a result of your request. Love, Lisa Nichols

Disruptions of the ecosystem, can affect health, disease, and nutrition. Research provides how essential information on environmental degradation can lead to nutritional health issues as in malnutrition, contamination, and infectious disease. Public health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, tuberculosis, measles, respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disease, all reflect nutritional and environmental factors. Environmental contamination may compromise nutritional status and health in humans and animals. Don’t Forget to Nourish Your Soul How many of us try to fit too much in a day? Do we even figure in transition time between activities on our calendars? Driving from one place to another doesn’t really count as driving these days tends to be stressful. Consider that there are increasingly more books and CDs out these days meant to help us cope within this complex culture. Certainly, many of these references can serve as reminders for us to slow down yet, how good are we at applying what we’ve learned from them?

possibly we may not need to ask or listen, we simply need to be more engaged and enjoy what we’re doing. Here’s an example. Instead of rushing back & forth from the faucet to water the house plants, enjoy each plant. Notice how the leaves take on a different sculptural position as we rotate one towards the sunlight. Ponder the new leaf peaking up. For plants that are gathered together, rearranging them in a new fashion may be more interesting and pleasing. Arranging plants is a creative act. Such acts are contemplative and food for the soul. We each have a unique, inner need to express ourselves. Creativity re-enlivens us.

When we are in our own way, we can take time to seek guidance with prayer. I happen to believe even in the power of prayer. In the event that you doubt prayer, allow me to suggest that you ask for guidance anyway, instead of trying to take on everything alone. This is simply a quest for less discomfort. Or we can choose to afford ourselves some quiet time to meditate. In doing so, it may be revealed what we can do about our discomfort. Column It is sometimes appropriate to evaluate a home completely by yin and yang. Is the home large and open? (Yang) Is the home small, intimate with boxy rooms? (Yin)

Feng Shui

with Michelle Zanoni

How does the space flow? Is it balanced with some yin and yang spaces? That is the ultimate goal, to create a balance between both. If a space is mostly yin, it will feel passive, dark and cold. If yang is predominant, the space will be more active, bright and hot. Take a look at your home or office. Make a list of yin and yang. Are the colors hot or bright (yang), are they dark and dull (yin)? Are the floors shiny (yang) or are they matte (yin)?

The Art of Arrangement Welcome to Winter the Element of Water. How many of you are familiar with the Yin/Yang symbol? Do you know what it stands for?

It is also interesting to think of the season of Winter. Winter is yin. It is passive, quiet, cold, frozen, and mysterious.

It is actually viewed as the circle of life, the beginning and ending of all things. The out side circle represents the “everything”, the whole, while the inner shape of black is yin and white is yang. When they interact all is possible.

It would be appropriate to bring more yin into your space to reflect the season. You can add some blankets or throws for a cozy feeling. Try whipping up some hot chocolate to warm your insides. You can also try some lower lighting to soften things up.

You can notice that black has some white and that white has some black. They give life to one another and cannot exist without each other.

Have fun evaluating your space and enjoy this yin time of year.

The principles of yin and yang are applied to the home or office in a very basic way. While “yin” is dark, passive, downward, weak, cold, and small, ‘yang” is light, bright, active, strong, hot, and large. Yin and yang interaction can be viewed as a cycle each one following the other as night becomes day and hot becomes cold. The energy is constantly moving and transforming.

WILL THE REAL FRANKINCENSE PLEASE STAND UP?! Did you know that there are over 40 known species of frankincense? Through centuries, this precious oil has been revered for its healing properties. Contrary to popular belief, the Egyptians were not making a fashion statement with their heavy black eyeliner. It was frankincense resin placed around the eyes to protect from the desert storms that caused eye infections. Recently, in the clinical aromatherapy world, there has been a debate over which of the 40+ species offers the greatest benefits. Frankincense is considered a holy anointing oil used in religious ceremonies, especially in the Middle East. In modern day use, the oil can be found in skin care products to target dry skin and rejuvenation. It is also used for meditation, spiritual centering, concentration, and cancer research. So how do you tell the difference in purity and efficacy?

Boswellia sacra or Omani frankincense is the rarest oil which until recently was only made available to Saudi royalty. According to scientists at the Department of Chemistry Sultan Qaboos University, this is the only frankincense species grown in Arabia. It is the premium kind used for spiritual properties. Due to the credibility of essential oils expert, D. Gary Young, this oil is now made available to the public exclusively through Young Living™ Essential Oils, the world leader in aromatherapy. Lastly, Boswellia frereana has the least amount of therapeutic benefits lacking the chemical constituents required for healing purposes. PubMed shows it does not have the powerful boswellic acids that have been studied in frankincense research. Caveat emptor—some companies may state their frankincense is from Oman; however, experts in the trade confirm that this species is only native to Somalia. Researchers have found that essential oils have potent effects against Super Germs, tough bacteria that have become resistant to almost every antibiotic. With winter season here, wouldn’t it make sense to have the most potent Frankincense to winterize your body? A few drops rubbed daily over your spine and soles of your feet can serve as immunestimulating to fight infections.

Academic studies, including research from worldrenowned expert, D. Gary Young, have identified the top two species which are known for their medicinal properties: Boswellia carteri from East Africa and Boswellia sacra from Oman. Another species popularly known is Boswellia frereana from Somalia. Factors for consideration were given to place of origin, selection of species, and quality of chemical constituents found in each oil. Boswellia carteri, the most common species is highly

Working with Spirit: Subtle Energy

Likewise, it is not selfish to rest, to rejuvenate, and yet we too often set those aspects of selfnourishment aside in favor of accomplishing more, doing more.

with Christina Lynn Whited

Science long ago proclaimed that everything is energy. Some years ago they came up with the startling conclusion that energy could be changed by thought – that the outcome of an experiment was affected by the observer. The holistic community has been honing the use of thought to affect energy for eons, yet science is only now beginning to catch up. Thankfully, we, as energy workers, continue to raise the bar. As we approach the beginning of the second decade of the new millennium, it is easy to look at the breadth of holistic practice and see that we have come very far indeed. The existence of the Internet pulled everyone into a greater awareness of our global community. The separateness of the world shrinks a little more each day as the sense of Oneness grows. The subtle energy of division lessens, the awareness of our interconnectedness increases. With that increased awareness comes the realization that we are each responsible for the whole; that our own subtle energies matter greatly. Take time to step aside from the “busy”-ness of life in these months of increased darkness, to nurture your Self, your body-mind-spirit, as well

MARCI™

Doing is not always the answer. Sometimes the simple act of being is most important. Our families, our clients, and our world will be better served when we nourish ourselves fully. Slow down, allow yourself to just be for even a few moments a day. Call upon Spirit to guide you in the process of self-nurturing if you cannot find those moments for yourself. The subtle energies you use so well for others deserve to be employed for your Self first and foremost. Be as compassionate for yourself as you are for others and the world will be better for it. Being Left through Multitasking I was sharing, she was sharing. But then the phone between us began to vibrate, and it took her away.

Multi-tasking seems as though it’s becoming the new norm. With so many things competing for our attention, we forget what a gift we’re giving our child as we listen to them with one hundred percent of ourselves – nothing else, but listening. We could even turn the phone off, before we engage. It may feel to them, like you are honoring their very existence. They may feel like what they say is important. In turn, they may learn how to pass that practice on in their relationships.

She left to follow the request of the message punched out from miles away, in a different space from where the two of us inhabited. I tried not to feel the intrusion. I tried to quiet my judgments because I know they were merely to protect me from the feelings of being left.

I can surely forgive someone who leaves me to text another. But it makes me supremely aware of what I’m able to give to every child: something unique I think these days – my full attention – a precious gift during these multitasking times.

The teen growth spurt is one of the most dramatic, rapid changes that the human body experiences; it’s second only to the amazing growth that takes place during the first year of life.

with Jordan Brown

Although it is impossible to control what your teen will eat while not in your home, you can make a world of difference by having your home stocked with good choices.

“Oh no, not broccoli again.” We have all heard it one way or another.

Don’t buy soda and junk food. It’s too accessible to children in the first place.

One of my children, (who will remain unnamed) would be happy having a bagel for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Your home can be the place where they are exposed to different and healthy snacks. Most importantly, have fun and make eating together a priority.

Nutrition for teens can be quite the challenge. Ads for junk food and images of impossibly thin adolescent girls give kids conflicting and unhealthy ideas about what they should eat. It’s important to be knowledgeable about what is healthy and what is not. This way, you help them make better choices. Vegetarian children have significant health advantages over their meateating peers.

Family meals are not only a time for strengthening family ties and keeping track of your children’s lives, they can actually lead to better physical and mental health for your children. Children who frequently eat meals with their families tend to do better in school, eat healthier than their peers and suffer less with obesity. Bon Appétit.

Nutritious vegetarian diets are typically high in fiber, low in saturated fat, full of vitamins and minerals, rich in healthy plant protein, and completely free of cholesterol. Of course it’s possible for your teen to state they are a vegetarian and live on corn chips and soda. This will require some major intervention and education. Nutritious vegetarians have lower rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meateaters do, and studies indicate that the earlier children are started on a healthy diet, the better off they will be later in life. Isn’t that what we want for our children?

3 Great New Year’s Resolutions for Us All to Follow

RESOLUTION#2: EXPAND YOUR SPHERE OF AWARENESS Try this year to expand more of your awareness to concern beyond yourself and your life. There is so much to do in the world and we can all be more expanded vessels for change this year. As we do so we, become more inspired, more enlivened, and our sense of selfworth goes up because we are aligning ourselves more with the Highest in us.

By the time you are reading this a new year, 2011, will be arriving. And we all have our own personal resolutions: to lose weight, to make more money, to grow our business, to meet a new lover, etc.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once wisely said that “A man has not really started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic existence to the larger concerns of all humanity.”

I have always felt, though, that collectively we should have New Year’s Resolutions as a human race.

I have always loved this quote and have it framed at home. Rise above your own “narrow confines” this year to the larger concerns of all humanity!

with Justin Buffer

I am therefore dedicating my column this issue to 3 New Year’s resolutions that I would like to urge all readers of this column and magazine to follow. If each of us follows these in our daily lives we can make a marked difference in the world this year, 2011, and be the agents of transformation and change that we are meant to be. RESOLUTION#1: BE KINDER Every great religious and spiritual text talks about kindness. The Talmud, the great Jewish book of wisdom, tells us that “The highest form of wisdom is kindness.”

3) COMMIT TO YOUR OWN GROWTH AND SEEK MORE TRUTH The great philosopher Plato once said that “the unexamined life is not worth living.” Let this year be for you a year in which you do deeply examine yourself ,your beliefs, and you seek for truth and expansion in every area of your life. Commit to reading books that stimulate you or learn to do something that you formerly told yourself you couldn’t. Make this year the year that you o say a loud and resounding “No” Torsiell ine M. n a J y to the voices within you that on b lustrati Photoil seek to limit you.

Make this year one in which you commit to being kinder to yourself and others. Money Coaching with Tom Selkow

Christmas and the end of 2010 are upon us as this issue is released. Most people are occupied with what to give to others and holiday plans at this time of year. That is great, and it can be really fun to hunt for the perfect gift for the special people in one’s life. While you are, remember to notice what you have and how much abundance is there for you already. A great game to play to remind yourself of how much you already have is the “I Have Enough” game. The rules are very simple and easy to follow. Simply notice as many times in a day you can that you have enough of something. For example, when you are getting dressed in the morning remind yourself, as you look in the sock drawer, that you have enough socks for the day. When you open the cupboard to get a cup for coffee, remind yourself there are enough cups. The possibilities are endless, and the more things you find you have enough of, the easier it is to feel

After you are comfortable with saying it to yourself, try telling others you have enough. Notice their reaction. Teach them the game too if you choose. Imagine an entire office looking for “I have enough” instead of “I need.” May you enjoy the company of family and friends, have countless reasons to rejoice and notice blessings everywhere you look now and throughout the new year to come. Enjoy your holiday season. For more information about transformation using sound and awareness contact me by email at tselkow@zeropointtrans.com or by phone at 862268-4443

Recipe contest winner — Second Place Not Your Grandma’s Apple Pie Submitted by Christina Lynn Whited

Ingredients: D5, 6, or 7 apples depending upon their size 6 tablespoons tapioca starch Truvia – 3 packets or more to taste 3 teaspoons organic cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon ginger powder This is a deep-dish apple pie recipe that I started making for myself when I found I had a sensitivity to gluten. This version has no wheat and no dairy. Choose any pie pan or casserole dish you like, I find I prefer glass or ceramic. You will need a bowl for mixing and a food processor, unless you really like to chop nuts by hand. I like to use a variety of apple types for more interesting flavor. I always use a few Romes, as I enjoy the texture of an apple that does not dissolve into mush in a pie. I use a glass bowl and a wooden spoon because vitamin C is compromised when it touches metal. This is not an overly sweet pie, so if you like things very sweet, use more Truvia. Truvia is made from the stevia plant, which is far sweeter than sugar, so use a light hand. I use coconut oil because of the health benefits and its delightful taste in baked goods. It is a solid up to 76 degrees, at which point it turns into a liquid. Because it is a tropical oil, it can take a lot of heat without turning rancid, and therefore has a very long shelf life and need not be refrigerated. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Peel, core and slice the apples until they

overfill the dish. I like to make it level, then add one or two more. Transfer the apples to a large glass bowl. I use a fine mesh strainer to combine 3 teaspoons of tapioca, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, the ginger, about a ½ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg, a sprinkle of allspice, and a light sprinkle of ground cloves. Shake the strainer to distribute the mixture, then sprinkle on one packet of Truvia and mix well with a wooden spoon. Return the mixture to the casserole dish and fit it in as best you can. Place the nuts, the coconut oil, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 3 teaspoons of tapioca, and 2 packets of Truvia in the food processor and pulse to combine. If you are using whole nuts, pulse them a few times first to begin the chopping. Continue grinding the nuts as you blend them with the other

ingredients, creating a rather sticky and crumbly mixture. Dig in, scooping out a large spoonful at a time and patting the nut mixture onto the top of the apples. Distribute the topping as evenly as possible, garnish with a few whole nuts if you have them, and pop in the oven for 45 minutes to an hour, or until the top is golden brown and the pie smells delicious. I like to trust my sense of smell more than the timer. Warm or cold, this deep-dish pie is absolutely delicious! Variations I like to toss in a handful of raw cranberries or frozen blueberries to give it an extra boost of color and flavor. Any combination of chopped fruit would probably do, including raisins, plums, apricots, dried fruit, pears, peaches, strawberries, etc. The crust can be changed by adding oatmeal and eliminating the tapioca, as the oats will act as a binder, and cutting back on the nuts, or not. If you can handle dairy, this is very yummy served warm with vanilla ice cream. The combination of flavors and textures is out of this world. Have fun!.

Normally this column is reserved for interpreting dreams that have been sent to me. But as I began writing this for the Fall edition of MARCI, I was struck by how many people asked me how I became a dream interpreter. So I thought I would take the opportunity to write this issue’s column about how I got started. When I was three or four, I had a horrific nightmare that was so vivid that I recall it to this day. What struck me most, even at that young age, was that I knew the images I was seeing were not my own. Obviously, I was too young to articulate this, but I had a sense of it, and as I got older, I never forgot the dream. To make things even more interesting, the day afte r I had the dream, we were driving in my family’s car, and as we drove over the bridge near my house, I saw the house that had been in my dream the night before. It was the only image in the dream that could have been my own. Everything else was not possible for me to have even experienced, much less remembered. I tried to tell my family and friends what I had seen. My mother said I just had a nightmare, and told me it was normal to have scary dreams once in a while. Others around me were not as understanding, and told me I was imagining things. This was a common reaction for the next several years. If I said I knew my dreams meant something, or that I was seeing someone else’s memories, people would ask me to explain. But at that age, I didn’t even know the word elaborate, much less how to do it. So I stopped talking about it for a long time.

MARCI™

As I grew, I had very vivid dreams – I mean they were in Technicolor with Surround-Sound. I was aware there was more going on than just the recycling of random images from my day. There were stories, movies, epic tales, heroes, monsters, all manner of flora and fauna. It was a world I loved to visit, even though at times it could be extremely disturbing. I knew I was doing more than simply processing my day’s memories or stresses. That is what everyone else told me dreams were for, to review and to vent. I began to see the continuity from one dream to the next. Then I realized that if there was a story, there had to be an author. If there was a movie, there had to be a director. I began to recognize themes and recurrent symbols. Then it hit me, what I was reading was a language. And if that language could be read, it could be understood and spoken. As I began to see my dreams as communication, I started to sense the language, to read the messages, and to interpret them. At first I interpreted only my own dreams. As the years past, I grew more comfortable and started interpreting those of my friends. In time, I became faster and more accurate, and began interpreting for total strangers. Soon I was invited to read at local New Age stores and psychic fairs. In 2010, I became a recurring guest on Life Unedited, a talk show on WCHE Radio 1520 AM in the Philadelphia area with host John

Raising the Stakes: Bruesewitz vs. Wyeth Inc. with Maureen Drummond

In 1986, Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act. The Act provided guidelines to manufacturers for making safer vaccines and implemented a passive surveillance system, known as the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, to recognize and report all known and unknown post-licensure adverse reactions associated with vaccines. The act also established a special Vaccine Court to hear vaccine injury–related cases and a “compensation program” to issue awards to vaccine-injured claimants “quickly, easily and with certainty and generosity.” By far, the strongest and most widely upheld provision of the act shields the vaccine manufacturer from civil liability when injury or death results from taking the products.

claim. In March of 2009, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Bruesewitz’s did not have the right to sue the vaccine maker, Wyeth, Inc., asserting that its vaccine design was unsafe. On appeal from the Third Circuit Court, the Supreme Court will now hear the case to decide whether a vaccine injured person has the right to pursue a traditional “design defect” claim under tort law when the “Vaccine Court” refuses compensation. The stakes are high on Bruesewitz vs. Wyeth, Inc. and the case is significant as it relates to all vaccine injury. Five thousand petitioners in the Omnibus Autism Proceeding hang on this very decision for the right to continue their civil claims in state and federal courts if the Vaccine Court denies their standing claims. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Bruesewitz vs. Wyeth in the fall. It is critically important for advocates of informed consent to vaccination to weigh in. As Mary Holland, Esq., supporting counsel in B. v. W. stated, “Only by ensuring that vaccine designs are as safe as reasonably possible and by ensuring access to justice in the event of injury will parents and individuals comply with vaccine mandates.”

“No vaccine manufacturer shall be liable… if the injury or death resulted from side effects that were unavoidable even though the vaccine was properly prepared and was accompanied by proper directions and warnings.” Perhaps nobody knows this better than the Bruesewitz family.Hannah Bruesewitz received her third round of DTP vaccinations in April of 1992 and developed “residual seizure disorder” resulting from the vaccines. Previously recognized on the Vaccine Injury Table in 1991 as a known adverse reaction, “residual seizure disorder” was arbitrarily removed from the table one month before the Bruesewitz’s filed their case. In December of 2002, ten years after their petition was filed, the Vaccine Court rejected their

How Healthcare Reform Will Work Best

When people live healthy lifestyles, their chances of needing health care are greatly reduced, and the cost of maintaining good health also reduces. There is less of a need for frequent doctor visits, tests and medications, all of which can be costly.

with Susannah Pitman

Many people are very anxious about what will happen with their health care coverage in 2013 when the Health Care Reform bill that was signed by President Barack Obama earlier this year goes into effect.

The good news for complementary and alternative medicine practitioners and clients is that these therapies work well for helping to maintain good health.

Will there be enough money to cover health expenses? Will seniors be forgotten? Will people be able to afford health insurance? Will affordable health insurance be comprehensive? Will this reform correct the problems that we see today in health care or will it make them worse? How will we afford health care reform?

One does not need to have a health problem to benefit from acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic, reiki and all of the hundreds of other wonderful therapies available to us. All of these therapies generally improve blood, nervous and lymphatic flow, all of which are important for good health. If this country becomes a society that embraces these therapies as a primary form of maintaining great health, any health care reform will work best for everyone.

With any change that intends to impact a large mass of people, the reality is that the answer to these questions is really not known. Also, there really is no one answer for everyone. Everybody is different. Everyone’s health is different. Not everyone will be impacted in the same way. The big question people should be asking about health care reform is how can we help make this work best?

Susannah Pitman, MS, LAc is an acupuncturist with a private practice in Boonton, NJ. She completed her Masters degree in New York City and has traveled to China and Japan to further her studies. She is a co-founder and Secretary of Changing Health, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to facilitating and maintaining affordable acupuncture clinics for people in need.

The way any health care reform is going to work is if people take responsibility for their own health. Taking responsibility of your own health means practicing daily healthy habits – waking and going to sleep at reasonable hours, making

HUMAN DESIGN AND THE NATURE OF RESPONSE: Keys to Following your Strategy for Generators and Manifesting Generators by Karen Flaherty INTRODUCTION Have you ever puzzled over making a decision and weren’t sure which path to choose when it came to a relationship, career or finances? Should we follow our head ... or our heart ... or our gut? Everyone seems to have a different opinion, and friends and family usually want to help us when we can’t make up our own minds. But a strategy that works for one person may not work for you, and vice versa. And anyway, doesn’t it make sense that the decision should be yours? Well, it really is your decision, and by knowing what your Human Design is, you can make decisions confidently and with the assurance that it will the right decision for you — every time. In the Human Design system, there are five personality Types, each with its own way of making decisions — called the Strategy — and its own way of manifesting the fulfillment of its desires. The five types are: Manifestors, Projectors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, and Reflectors. (If you’d like to get your chart to know what your Human Design is, please go to www.livingbyhumandesign. com to get a free chart.) Since Generators and Man-

ifesting Generators make up about 70 percent of the population, theirs is the most prevalent strategy on earth. The strategy for Generators and Manifesting Generators is “waiting to respond”. But what does that mean exactly? When they hear that is their strategy, many people wonder: What is responding and how do I determine whether I am responding or initiating? GENERATOR STRATEGY In order to live according to their strategy, the two most common Types, Generators and Manifesting Generators

MARCI™

47

(I’ll just call them Generators for the rest of the article) must respond to things that present themselves, rather than initiating action and activity. If Generators don’t wait to respond but instead choose to initiate action, then they will meet with frustration and resistance. Knowing how to use the response mechanism that is built into the Generator Type, therefore, is the key to success in making decisions. Once a Generator knows how to properly use response, then they can unleash the powerful life-force energy of the sacral motor and commit to work and life in a way that is healthy for themselves and everyone around them. DEFINITION OF A GENERATOR Only Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined sacral motor — the red square in the middle of a chart. All other types — Manifestors, Projectors and Reflectors — do not have a defined sacral motor. The sacral motor is the most powerful motor in the body. The sacral motor is the life force motor and is designed to respond to work opportunities and to sexual

Winter 2010

Human Design cont’d opportunities. Just like a car, however, the sacral motor has to be “turned on.” The keys that we use to turn on the sacral motor are the special sounds that the sacral center makes. These sounds are “Uh-Huh” and “Un-Un”. Generators can use these sounds as a navigation tool to help them evaluate whether opportunities that come to them are right for them or not. These sounds are the “response” that the Generator gives to some opportunity or question that arises. USING THE SACRAL RESPONSE To put it simply: responding — as it is described in the Human Design System — is simply a method of using your gut instincts to give yes/no type responses to yes/no type questions. So, it is important for Generators to make the sacral sounds in response to things that come to them. For example, if you visit an acquaintance that you haven’t seen in a while and he asks you if you want to work with him at his new company. If you say, “Uh-huh”, then this response indicates that the job offer might be a good work opportunity for you. If you respond “un-un”, then it might not be a good opportunity for you. Your sacral response lets

you know if the situation is correct for you or not. The basic structure of the sacral response follows this exact pattern: a yes/no question is asked and the gut response is allowed to flow from inside as an “uh-huh” (yes) or as an “un-un” (no). As oversimplified as that example sounds, you will experience such situations if you are a sacral being. In fact, Generators will frequently get questions just like that to respond to. It almost seems like the Universe is being so obvious at times by throwing out direct yes or no questions that it

MARCI™

48

makes me laugh at how easy it is to respond in a way that is correct for me. Every meal, for example, is an opportunity for a Generator to respond. “Do you want a salad?” one might ask. “Uhhuh” might be the answer. “Do you want your dressing on the side?” “Un-un” might be the answer. And so it goes, every day, every meal, can be a chance for a Generator to respond in a clear way to a specific question. If only it were that simple all the time. Unfortunately, we don’t always get a perfectly

Winter 2010

Human Design cont’d worded question that allows us to answer “uh-huh” or “unun” out loud. Sometimes we get more subtle promptings and then Generators wonder whether they’re responding or initiating. So here are a few examples: • Your sister has a new baby and her husband calls to let you know. Your immediate reaction will likely be “uh-huh”, as if someone had asked “Do you want to see the baby?” It’s subtle, but you’re responding to an internal prompting to go visit a new family member. • You’re at a fair and you pass a booth with books. Your eye catches a little blue book as you’re passing and you turn back to take a closer look. It turns out it’s just the book you’re looking for. That’s your sacral letting you know — however subtly — that there’s an opportunity for you to respond to, if you’ll just take a closer

Why is it critical for us to understand the importance of healthy, happy gestation and birth? Why is it important to make every effort to eliminate the birth trauma from the delivery room? Does it affect our lives? How? What began in 1982 as a search for ways to eliminate birth trauma for the babies in my work with Russian Waterbirth Pioneer, Igor Charkovsky, grew into a deep and beautiful healing experience for me personally. If you want to meet me in my deep commitment to a greater happiness and wellbeing, I’m willing to share with you what I have learned. A new baby, long before birth, during labor, and right after, is an extremely sensitive being, more so than anytime during adulthood. Our early impressions stay with us our entire lives, for better or worse. Twenty-five years of thorough research in prenatal psychology show a direct correlation between the tone of our birth and the subconscious behavioral and emotional patterns in our adult lives. This is due to the mechanism called “limbic imprint”. Imagine that your TV is set on “maximum blue.” No mater what movie is being shown on the screen, everything will be very blue; or if brightness is

Learning to Change the Limbic Imprint by Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova

set on ‘dim’ — no matter how bright the image, your screen shows a very dark picture. That exact mechanism is at work in us. It is the same limbic imprint deliberately used for thousands of years to train animals to serve people. For example, a baby elephant is chained to a small stick in the ground. The baby elephant rages all his might for a few days and then stops. When

MARCI™

51

he grows up and has enough strength to pull this stick right out, he doesn’t. He never even tries. To better understand the term “limbic imprint,” let’s look at the basic structure of our brain. At the tip of the spinal cord is a segment called the reptilian brain, responsible purely for the body’s physiological functions. This part of the brain remains functional even in a comatose or in a “vegetable” state — the basic physiology of the body is still going on, women even keep menstruating and can continue with gestation if they are pregnant. The cortex, usually referred to as the “gray matter,” is responsible for our mental activity. Routinely called “the brain”, the cortex is responsible for our cognitive functions: logic, calculating, planning. Then we have the limbic system of the brain, responsible for our emotions, sensations and feelings. Limbic imprinting happens in this part of the brain, which is not directly connected with the cortex. During gestation, birth and early childhood, the limbic system registers all of our sensations and feelings, without translating it into the

Winter 2010

cont’d on next page

Limbic cont’d language of cortex, simply because it is not yet developed. That memory lives in the body the rest of our life, whether we know of it or not. We come into this world wide-open to receive love. When we do receive it, as our first primal experience, our nervous system is limbically imprinted — “programmed” with the undeniable rightness of being. Being held in the mother’s loving arms, feeding from her breast and seeing the great joy in the father’s eyes, provides a natural sense of bliss and security; setting the world as the right place for us to be in. If our first impressions of being in the body are anything less than loving (painful, frightening, lonely), then that “anything” imprints as a valid experience of love. It is immediately coded into our nervous system as a “comfort zone,” acting as a surrogate for the love and nurturing, regardless of how painful, frustrating and undesirable it actually was. In the future, as adults, we will unconsciously, automatically re-create the conditions imprinted at birth and through early childhood. Research by pioneers of prenatal psychology, such as: Dr. Thomas Verny, Dr. David Chamberlain and Dr. William Emerson shows that an overwhelming amount of physical conditions

and behavioral disorders are the direct result of traumatic gestation and complications during delivery, including unnecessary mechanical interventions and an overdose of anesthesia. On top of the devastating effect of trauma during actual birth, what happens after — like routine impersonal postpartum care, can also be a source of trouble. Lack of immediate warm, soft and nurturing contact with the mother, premature cutting of the cord, rude handling, circumcision, needles, bright lights, startling noises — all this sensory overload becomes instantly wired into the newborn’s nervous systems as the new “comfort zone.” This occurs against all logic, as logic resides in a different part of the brain, which is not quite developed yet. Thus, one may unconsciously recreate or attract repeated situations of abuse and/or become abusive. Even if later in life his or her rational mind/ cortex recognizes this pattern of “abuse,” the imprinting lies in a different part of the brain, which doesn’t have the skill to stop the pattern. According to a 1995 study by Dr.William Emerson, 95% of all births in the United States are considered traumatic, 50% rated as “moderate,” and 45% as “severe” trauma. It affects all of us. Born into excruciating labor pains or into the numbness and toxicity of anesthesia, we are limbically imprinted

MARCI™

52

for suffering and numbness. Traumatic birth strips us of our power and impairs our capacity to love, trust, be intimate and experience our true potential. Addictions, poor problem-solving skills, low self-esteem, inability to be compassionate and responsible — all these problems have been linked to birth trauma. For more information go to www.birthpsychology.com Normally, a woman gives birth the way she herself was born, due to the same mechanism of limbic imprint. That’s all her body knows about “how-to” procreate. If born with complications, she will, most likely automatically repeat that scenario. Unless she consciously alters that limbic memory, she will unconsciously hand down her own birth trauma to her daughter, as she received it from her mother. Historically, most of the masterpieces of human culture reflect the drama of life — greed, lust, hate, lost dreams, unrealized potential. Shakespeare’s plays, centuries of paintings, classical music are very beautiful ways of speaking about human despair. Only a small fraction of cultural heritage speaks of love, beauty and fulfillment. Why is that? From what I understand, in order to give birth to an enlightened masterpiece, whether it would take a form of a human baby, a beautiful poem, or simply a rich, fulfill-

I AM THE BODY, THE MIND AND THE SOUL By Sami S. Jarroush Insightful new book uncovers one man’s conversations with his angel about life and living, death and dying Author Sami S. Jarroush brings enlightenment to readers as he releases; I Am the Body, the Mind and the Soul. In this book, he offers insight to questions about faith, life, and death as he received them through his dialogues with his guardian angel. Humans have worries, fears, and obligations that they live by blindly, according to what they were taught. They seek happiness through a different channel that could be called God, Spirit, the Universe, etc., not understanding why they do what they do. For the last two years, Jarroush has been having dialogues with his guardian angel and offers discussions that will help humans understand who they are, what their life’s mission is, what happens when they leave this life, and how to live and die without fear of the unknown. It is a powerful dialogue that brings to light information that was meant to be shared with the world. Eye-opening, thought-provoking, and highly reflective, I Am the Body, the Mind and the Soul takes readers through a journey to self awareness where the answers to living in happiness without worries, fears or obligations reside. This journey is to show every human how to finish a life that started with rules and conditions, in awareness and considerate living.

“Astrologers are agreed that the squiggles called a horoscope contain some sort of message to be decoded.” —Dennis Elwell It’s my humble opinion that the general public sometimes reveres, often fears, frequently simplifies, but most often misunderstands astrology (also known as horoscope or zodiac.) Does it predict the future? Can those strange symbols in your chart tell you if you need to get a divorce, move, find a new job or a new life? Let’s get one thing straight from the get-go. There is your chart and then there is the astrologer. Are all astrologers created equal? To answer that question all you need do is replace the word “astrologer” with another, like, say, “doctor,” or “teacher,” or — well, I think you get the picture. There are astrologers who may be psychic, but most are not. There are astrologers who are counselors, but most are not. And, finally, there are astrologers who possess the ability to look at a chart, ask questions about how the chart’s energies actually manifest in your life, and to interpret not only how you used those energies in the past, but how you are using them now. Then — and here is the key — the astrologer intuitively interprets how the influences of the present and future shown in your chart can manifest in your particular, individual, one-of-a-kind life, and explains how harnessing these energies in a conscious way

What is an Astrologer? by Sheri Horn Hasan, Karmic Evolution Astrology

can allow you to move forward and live your life to its highest potential. The Art of the Chart “There is no better boat than a horoscope to help man cross over the sea of life.” — Varaha Mihira But should you live your life according to what some astrologer says, whether it’s about your life’s true mission, or about whether or not to get married, move, or take that new job? This brings us into the discussion of “fate” vs. “free will.” This is a short article, so let’s not go too deep…suffice it to say that any good astrologer is aware of the fact that choice, or “free will,” is always an option in how we deal with life’s trials and tribulations (not to mention

MARCI™

its joyous and happy times.) Because the art of “chart synthesis,” or putting together all of those pieces of your natal (or birth) chart that make up you as an individual — distinct from your mother, your father, brother or sister (yes, even twins) or anyone else born on the same date, at the same time and location as you — is both formulaic (i.e., scientific) and intuitive, individual astrologers may provide differing advice. It’s common knowledge in the psychiatric profession that people seek out therapists when they are in crisis. Astrology is no different — people often seek out readings when they are at a crossroads, unsure which way to go, confused about why events have happened, and unable or unwilling to face the possibility of change. Again, and this is key — as the astrologer fills in the rhyme and reason of these crossroads, these events, these seemingly random crises that may result in unwanted, unsolicited or hostile-seeming change, he or she does so with an intent to support their client and to provide insight and hope as the client navigates his or her way through and into the future. What Makes an Astrologer Good? “Since the astrologer cannot know how an aspect is manifesting until she or he talks to the client, it is imperative that astrologers take the

time to know their clients and to provide interpretations that express an appropriate range of meanings.” — Glenn Perry There are many excellent astrologers out there. I studied at the feet of some, and have met many others in the course of my studies and travels. In my opinion, the best ones by far are the ones who engage in the organic process of astrology. By that I mean they listen, they hear, they analyze, and they synthesize your chart as a living breathing entity — one with its own unique story and set of challenges and blessings. And through their uniquely intuitive “take” on your individual story (validated by your chart) they identify all of the potential possibilities and solutions inherent there, as well as in the particular dilemma to which you have come to them for help. Astrology is fluid, archetypal, metaphysical — and life, as we know, is about growth and change — so the two go together nicely, and the astrologer chosen to interpret and synthesize your chart is hopefully one who understands that. Often, when other avenues prove unsatisfactory, you may look to an astrologer’s chart reading for answers. But it is not an astrologer’s answers to specific questions that make a good astrologer.

Once upon a time there was a TV show called ‘Lost in Space’. June Lockhart, as mom, called the family to dinner each night whereupon she dispensed to each a pill that contained all the nutrients they needed, being that real food is hard to come by in outer space. It seemed like such a fascinating idea at the time, and I’ll admit, at times, I wished that there could be a food pill to take to solve all of my food choice challenges. When I was very young, there were foods I simply could not and would not tolerate. These included hotdogs and lima beans. I remember sitting at the kitchen table long after everyone else left, chewing and chewing on a hotdog I couldn’t bear to swallow, until at last, when no one was looking, I removed the remnants from my mouth and secreted them in the storage space under the bench on which I sat. We stored the ice skates there and so when winter rolled around, and my mother opened the chest, there were the moldy remains of last summer’s hotdog. While I outgrew my contempt for hotdogs, I have a friend, who as an infant refused any baby food containing fruit. It turns out that due to over sensitive taste buds, she still can’t eat them as a middle-aged adult. And despite really enjoying a good salad, sometimes I opt for a bowl of Ben and Jerry’s instead. Because it’s there and it’s easier. What’s all this got to do with

Comfort Food for Thought by Beth Lowell the animals we live with? For starters, they have reasons for not eating certain foods, just as we do. Sometimes after “spoiling” the family dog with treats, for instance, to get him to take a pill, people are surprised when he turns his nose up at the kibble he’s been eating day in and day out for years. It’s really a no-brainer. He obviously prefers the “treats” which are probably human grade food like cheese or peanut butter. I’m not advocating cheese and peanut butter as staples of any dog’s diet, but I do propose that people think about how life would be if they had to eat the same thing, day in and day out. The key to health is a variety of fresh foods, and unlike the magical pills from my beloved ‘Lost in Space’, most nutrients that go into kibble are cooked out of it because of the extrusion process, during which it’s cooked at a very high temperature. Eating the same thing day in and day out can lead to allergies too. Speaking of allergies, beef is a big one for dogs. Food allergies in dogs can manifest themselves in breathing problems, but often they result in digestive issues like diarrhea and vomiting. If your pet has chronic diarrhea, try an elimi-

nation diet to determine the ingredient that’s causing it. In dogs, it’s often beef or grains. Food allergies gone unchecked can lead to diseases that have serious and life threatening consequences, like IBD in both dogs and cats and can often be resolved through a change in diet. In the end, this is much more cost effective than a life on prescription drugs which do not come without negative affects. I’ve never seen a dog prefer kibble over something fresh and moist, but I have seen cats who refuse wet food for dry. Why this is I’m not sure. But what I am sure of is that feeding cats dry food is a leading cause of feline renal failure. There’s an epidemic of it. Cats are descended from desert animals and rarely drink water. They get it from their food, and kibble has none. What kibble does have is a lot of extenders that make cats fat, and that leads to all sorts of medical problems just like it does in humans. If your cat starts drinking large amounts of water and has increased urination it can be a sign of kidney problems or diabetes. These conditions are most often directly related to diet. If you’ve tried to switch your cat from dry to wet or raw without success, remove all dry cat food from the house. Your cat has a much more sensitive nose than you do and will hold out for it. Once

the dry food is out of the picture, your cat will probably comply with the new regimen. Do not feed your cat canned tuna. The mercury content is too high for her to tolerate. Food can be a wonderful thing. Animals deserve to enjoy it as much as humans do. The days of low quality convenience foods are largely over for most people, so why grab the easiest thing to feed to your pet? Don’t shortchange them. Their health and their happiness depend on you. Just a little comfort food for thought…

In order to deal with and meet the challenge of people’s expectations, I tell them that an experience with Matrix Energetics can mean everything or can mean nothing: no thing! If you observe what I am doing as evidence that a particular thing has occurred, this in turn implies that by the power of your consciousness, your observation of one specific outcome, you may in turn limit the expression of all other possible desirable outcomes from the same experience. The act of choosing, as they say in quantum physics, collapses all the other probable occurrences into the one event or result that is consciously chosen. If I say that our interaction is about a “thing” then I have limited what “it” can be. In order to include all of the possibilities you have to consider what might normally be deemed impossible and make them part of the solution-set. If we interpret the ideas of quantum physics liberally and with a large dose of imagination, we can begin to understand that for each possible outcome many other probability realities can occur—perhaps even some things that would be considered impossible within the context of our mutually assured construction of reality. So within the framework of my interaction with the people at an event, many things may happen, even some that I did not consciously participate in. I have received calls and e-mails describing how, in a number of instances, some-

you have set up the rules for deciding what things mean to you. Whatever meaning you make is ultimately only about you. Don’t make it about faith healing, or knocking people to the floor. Also, don’t think that if it doesn’t happen, you are doing something wrong. That is just about how you interpret events within your worldview. You will see what you expect to see, and learn, in many cases, only within the context of what you already think you know.

Expectations Can Limit You by Richard Bartlett

one in the audience had a healing event simply by sitting in the morphic field generated by the presentation. While this is obviously a very desirable occurrence, I can in no way promise that something of this nature will occur in any given set of circumstances, but nor will I be able to guarantee that it will not. Fortunately, those things are not entirely up to my conscious awareness or participation. Expect the Unexpected People will attach meanings to things. So whatever you see me do, you will see it through your own eyes and interpret it through your database of experiences. Each person might have a different experience, based on how

Are You Ready to Wake Up in the Matrix? Reach down and touch the surface of a table that is nearby. You probably think that when you are touching the top of a table that its surface is hard, that it is a solid, physical object. But really, the table is composed of a bunch of electrostatic charges that pop in and out of existence continually. If you learned to see the table from a quantum viewpoint or way of looking, perhaps if you could absolutely hold that desired state, you could put the fingers of your hand right through that tabletop. But don’t try to do that if you see the table as a hard, fixed, structural object; you might break your hand! Getting to a foothold in consciousness where experiences in what others and I call non-ordinary reality is not only possible, but becomes second nature, requiring constant practice in stretching the

boundaries of your beliefs so that the flexibility of your new state practically demands that your experience of the world around you undergo a transformational shift. This is one of the things that I think the Matrix Energetics seminar does for those who attend. We provide a safe harbor for you to experiment and to map unusual, useful, and reproducible states of consciousness that can aid you in shifting the parameters of your awareness into a wave-front or quantum conscious state. Once those state changes and new perceptions are accompanied by quantifiable experiences within the course of the seminar experiment, then you begin to experience confidence that this is something that is not weird, or “out there.” It is merely another way of observing, which can and does produce physical changes in the people and things that you practice with. Once the mind has stretched to encompass the reality of a new experience it can never shrink back entirely into the old way of seeing the world. Like my example given earlier in this book, suddenly you look out into the previously empty harbor, but now you perceive the presence of “ships.” What was previ-

ously there, but unperceived, suddenly appears obvious and just as real as anything else in your immediate environment. Welcome to day one of a new life’s expression! This is what makes Matrix Energetics so much more than just a technique or system of healing. Adapted from Matrix Energetics: The Science and Art of Transformation, ©2007, Atria Books/Beyond Words. The holiday season can be a wonderful time of year; we decorate the house, engage in family traditions, visit with loved ones, eat our favorite foods and exchange gifts. It can also bring stress, anxiety and seasonal affective disorder. Seasonal affective disorder is a condition in which a person becomes depressed during the same season each year. There may be anxiety, irritability and difficulty in concentrating or staying focused. The decreased energy and concentration often occur during the afternoon. The depressive moods may cause social withdrawal and a lack of interest in activities that were once enjoyed by the person. Appetite changes may lead to a craving for carbohydrates which can cause weight gain. Over ten million people in the United States suffer from this disorder. Seasonal affective disorder is more common in women, but can affect anyone; especially people who live where winter days are short or the amount of daylight vastly differs by season. It is thought that the holiday season, as well as the long, dark days of winter, can contribute to this condition. Luckily there are several holistic approaches that can be used to address SAD. • Diet Eliminate white bread, potato chips, sugary snacks, caffeine. Lower your consumption of meats Incorporate more seasonal

production, one of the body’s neurotransmitters responsible for pleasure. Food sources include fish, meat, chicken, cheese, milk, eggs and fortified cereals. Vegetarians and Vegans should consider a supplement. Vitamin D has effects on the brain and hormone-producing tissues of the body that may help regulate your mood. Also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” the best natural source for this nutrient is the sun. It is manufactured in our bodies in response to exposure to sunlight. This, of course, presents a problem in cold climates during the winter months, as it is nearly impossible to get enough sun exposure to manufacture adequate amounts of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and regulating their levels in the blood. Calcium is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. In other words, it is extremely important for mental health. Vitamin D can be found in such foods as shiitake and button mushrooms, free range eggs, wild caught sockeye salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, catfish and tuna. Chromium is a metallic element which acts as an essential trace mineral in the diet. It is found in foods such as brewer’s yeast, organ meats, oysters, molasses, butter and eggs. In the body it combines with other complexes to help

regulate blood sugar. Chromium may help alleviate depression by making it easier for the amino acid tryptophan to enter the brain. Tryptophan is a biochemical precursor to a number of hormones, including serotonin and melatonin. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in bone. The other half is found predominantly inside cells of body tissues and organs. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Magnesium is found in spinach, black eyed peas , pinto and kidney beans, whole unrefined grains, nuts such as almonds, cashews and peanuts, soybeans, Halibut, avocados and seeds, brown rice, crude wheat bran, plain yo-

home remedies, including supplements, can be the way to go. Getting an extra boost of light, enough exercise and the nutrients your body needs may just make the difference between another bleak winter ...and a season to remember.

• Light Therapy According to the Mayo Clinic, bright light that mimics sunlight are shown to help relieve seasonal affective disorder by altering circadian rhythms and suppressing the release of melatonin in your body. • Negative Ion Therapy A new SAD treatment is negative ion therapy, which may elevate mood by releasing negatively charged air particles into the surrounding area. Final thoughts: One very important thing to keep in mind when discussing SAD is that, like any form of depression, it needs to be taken very seriously. Depression can be debilitating, and in extreme cases, fatal. If you or someone you know experiences more than just occasional minor blues, it is important to seek advice from a mental health professional. For those of us who simply feel a little down in the winter or when skies are gray,

Book Review This book kept my attention from cover to cover. I gained more in depth knowledge on things of which I was already aware. I have found a new sense of peace from this remarkable book. It gave me the opportunity to look at things from a new perspective. I was delighted to learn more about such things as how to keep our own energy moving, to soul mates and the sometimes difficult topic of life and death. After coming out of a three-year learning lesson I was still a little stuck for the lack of a better term. Reading this book truly clicked everything in place for me and my life.

I Am the Body, the Mind and the Soul

I am now able to continuously stay in the flow. I find that remarkable since I am after all human with an ego and emotions.

by Sami S. Jarroush, reviewed by Tracy R. Nosal

It is truly gratifying to have a true sense of calm and gratitude.

This book was given to me by Agnes Savoglou, to whom the book was dedicated.

With my new found awareness I have been able to continuously manifest and create the life I’ve imagined.

After meeting and speaking to Agnes ever so briefly, she must have felt I needed to read this book. Needless to say, her kind gift has given me yet more insight as I travel on this unique path for my soul’s growth.

My most rewarding treasure from this book is to now be totally comfortable with who I am and the healer within me. What a Blessing.

As I journey through this human experience I am always delighted when my next awareness is placed in my path.

Book Review meant to be faithful in prayer. Since reading Wilkinson’s book, The Prayer of Jabez, I have been reciting the prayer faithfully. “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” Wilkinson breaks down each part of the prayer to help the reader understand its meaning and how we can turn our life circumstances around by knowing that God is just waiting for us to ask for what it is we want, need and desire. Wilkinson’s experiences and of others as told in his book, give the reader a greater insight as to the power of prayer. Whether you are alone, or working as a group, you can manifest an intention by trusting the process while turning it over to the power of God. I believe the Holistic Mentorship Network (HMN) is growing and soaring higher and higher because I am asking for help and know that I am the receiver of many miracles and blessings.

The Prayer of Jabez

The more I get out of my own way, the quicker this organization will move in the direction of the vision I hold for HMN, our industry and for the communities in which we practice as holistic professionals.

by Bruce Wilkinson, reviewed by Linda Mitchell This is an extraordinary book that has given a beautiful and exhilarating expression to a very simple, but potent prayer that was stated in the bible by a man named Jabez.

This man called Jabez, who played a little part in a big book, has changed the lives of many who have chosen to follow their hearts desire. It is changing mine.

Jabez played a very small part in the bible, yet his prayer would help a lot of people to find out what it
