S h a r j a h ’s i n d u s t r i a l a r e a s 1 0 a n d 1 1 contain numerous warehouses that are not only abandoned in the present, but also face the risk of being inadequate spaces in the future. This project proposes the re-purposing and reconfiguration of the standard Butler frame building to accommodate for current and future programs, economies and urban fabrics. Indoor and outdoor production zones are intertwined with residential units suitable for both residents of the neighborhood and workers in the production zones. The site for the project exists on a global scale in that it can exist in any industrial zone context. A new building type is developed out of the existing condition by strategically manipulating the frames. The aim for this project is to rethink the existing living conditions within the industrial areas by hybridizing production and residential zones in anticipation of future changes in the work/live dynamic of the site and the region. Design Studio IV - Spring 2016 Professor Gregor Weiss
Project Site:
American University of Sharjah
Site Area:
2,400 sq.m
B u i l d i n g Ty p e :
University Building
Program:
Library Multipurpose Work Spaces Auditorium
This project is the study of the relationship between envelope and structure when designing a large spanned space intended to house different programmatic elements. The priority of the project is to maximize functional m o v e m e n t a n d f l o w, f r e e i n g u p i n t e r n a l s p a c e and facilitating the interaction between different disciplines. A network of circulation ensures that all students will have comfortable transitions. This network is in itself exciting and rewarding, as it has the beauty of visual d i s p l a y, t h e c o m f o r t o f s e a t i n g , a n d t h e stimulation of the five senses in performance halls and study areas distributed within the building. Offices for AUS faculty lie within the inhabitable skin of the building at an organization that allows for individual balcony and seating s p a c e f o r e v e r y m e m b e r o f t h e f a c u l t y. Not only is the park physically separated from the surrounding urban context by gated walls and streets that are obstacles to cross, but also conceptually bounding due to rigid regulations t h a t d i m i n i s h t h e s p a c e ’s p u b l i c n a t u r e . This project aims to extend the bounds of the adjacent park by integrating it into the media headquarters building itself. The green ramp not only serves as accessible public space, but also a circulation path that directs visitors t o c o m m e r c i a l s p a c e s . M o r e o v e r, p r i v a t e commercial space and public leisure space are hybridized to encourage cultural growth, social exchange and the sharing of experiences.

Hydrotherapy Pools Lounge Spaces Landscape
This is a design process studio, not following the conventional sequence: brief/site/solution, but a challenge to invent a concept or narrative that will lead to a program and site. This is done in well defined stages starting from abstract and material exercises and experiments, that were formally inspired by the osteoporosis of bones. This is followed by developing digital simulations using a V o r n o i s c r i p t o n G r a s s h o p p e r. T h e r e s u l t i n g program is a hydrotherapy center that utilizes the cavities, iterated during the early exploration phases, to form wet and dry lounge spaces, relaxation pools, and viewing decks embedded withing the mountains of Hatta in Oman.

This project seeks to provide opportunities for cultural growth, social exchange and entertainment to individuals, in addition to generating the first units of a “neighborhood. The Muwaileh Community Center is a facility that will cater to the issues of a multi-cultural society: social gathering and achievement of a h i g h e r d e g r e e o f c o m m u n i t y i d e n t i t y. T h e b u i l d ing is composed of flexible elements that allow for the flow of these social gatherings. Multiple pivot doors exist throughout the project that serve as operable walls that open d u r i n g t h e w i n t e r. A t t h e p e r i p h e r i e s , s h a d i n g structures fold creating outdoor balcony spaces. The building also hosts courses and workshops, promotes exhibitions, hosts seminars and concerts, and provides spaces and opportunities tailored for children, parents and families around a large central atrium.
