Writers Block KomboKitten I believe in not doing things to others which I wouldn’t want done to myself and I have compassion + empathy for all life. I love gaming, martial arts, photographic artistry, dancing, music, anime, sewing, cosplay and thinking. Currently I am particularly interested in having fun with cosplay and gaining work experience as a spokesperson and/or model. I am the official South African I LOVE NERD GIRLS representative/reporter. Beleran

Well, a bio of myself... Not sure what to say? Uhmmm, girl gamer, guitar lover, MMORPG fanatic, part time(like really part time) artist and philosopher - eh what?? (ignore last statement) Greatly privileged to be writing for a mag :) Hope to keep you entertained and interested!

“To live one’s passion means to be prepared to take a leap out of the comfort zone which is certainly not an easy thing to do. But there is a method which may help you do this easier. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. Now think about all the things that you could be doing. You are now looking at the one person preventing you from fulfilling your passion - how do you feel about that?” It was this passage of text that made me realise how far I have strayed from the things I am passionate about. With all the work I have been doing and all that has changed over the last few months I have forgotten to take time to appreciate the little things. That cold morning air as you step out to start your day or enjoying the walk to work with your head phones in your ears. These are the little things you will remember when you get older, the sweet nothings that paint your life with hopeful colour. But all too often we become distracted with the bigger picture. We let go of the small wonders and put them off until tomorrow. That solitary cup of coffee or that de-stressing yoga session. That little bit of me time that makes your day. We sacrifice the time to get in touch with ourselves and our passions for work or for other people. But this year our goal is to remind you that there is more to life than just work, we are here to remind you that you have a passion. Be it anime, gaming, tech, art or something that has nothing to do with this magazine, passion is what feeds the soul, it gives you determination and keeps you going when you should have given up long ago. It is what makes you sit in front of a screen for 18 hours straight, what makes you spend a fortune on the latest gear and gadgets, what makes you learn Japanese; and what makes you dress up like an anime character from your favourite show and run around a hall full of other strangely dressed people. Passion is what makes you feel young and alive, and I could sure use some of that. So this year my goal is to find the things I am passionate in life and concentrating on them. Because you never know, you could be on your death bed tomorrow regretting the things you never got to do because you were too busy. “Living a passion is not an easy thing to come by and is only rewarded to those who take risks. “ Love The All Otaku Team “A good sermon should be like a woman’s skirt: short enough to rouse the interest, but long enough to cover the essentials.”

As all of you know we are up and running again and we are looking for staff members. For the project to work we need writers but it is hard to check your own work so we are also looking for people to play proof reader for the magazine. Any other volunteers are more than welcome, I am sure we can find a use for you. Drop us a mail on allotaku2@ gmail.com or find us on our facebook page.

Fairy Tail

Psycho Pass

First Episode: August 18, 2012 Directed by: Masaya Fujimori Written by: Masashi Sogo Studio: A-1 Pictures, Sate light When Lucy Heartfilia runs away to join the rowdy wizards guild known as Fairy Tail she could never have anticipated where it would lead her. Along her travels she meets a boy named Natsu and his flying cat who are in search of in search of Natsu’s foster parent, a dragon named Igneel who had disappeared seven years earlier. Shortly after Lucy is kidnapped by a rebel wizard posing as the famous Salamander of Fairy Tail. After defeating the imposter Natsu reveals that he in fact is the Salamander, a wizard with the abilities of a dragon. The Synopsis for Fairy Tail reads like something out of a soapy, it’s a brilliant story line with a lot of thought put into it, but should you miss a couple of episodes you will find yourself backtracking, trying to figure out WTF just happened. No doubt, however, that this is one of the best releases of 2012. I am so keen to watch more of it.

Yuri Yuri 2 First episode: July 2, 2012 Network: Fuji Television Directed by Masahiko Ohta Written by Takashi Aoshima Studio Dogakobo Like most middle school kids, Akari Akaza decides to join a school club. The club she chooses is the Amusement Club, known by outsiders as the Tea Club composed solely of her two childhood friends, Kyouko Toshinou and Yui Funami. But when Chinatsu Yoshikawa, Akaza’s classmate, finds out the clubs secret she is allowed to join them in their meaningless endeavours. The club has no clear purpose and the anime has very little to the story line except for being incredibly kawaii. It was a good anime that you could waste time on, but not as good as a lot of others that were released this year.

“The series takes place in the near future, when it is possible to instantaneously measure and quantify a person’s state of mind and personality. This information is recorded and processed, and the term “Psycho-Pass” refers to a standard used to measure an individual’s being. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person’s criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals. The story centers around the “enforcement officer” Shinya Kougami, who is tasked with managing crime in such a world.” One of this year’s better releases, this anime is well worth the stream time, with an unusual concept behind it Psycho Pass is evidence of how creative and dark the anime industry can be.

In the year 2022 a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game) known as Sword Art Online is created and released to the public. The game is played by on a platform called Nerve Gear where players control their avatars with their minds. But when players log onto SAO they are horrified to discover that they are trapped. The players must make their way to the 100th floor and defeat the final boss in order to win the game and release every one trapped in it, however if the characters die in the game then they will die in reality too. This is probably one of the best animes released this year, it kicked up quite a buzz at the beginning of the year and its popularity has grown since. The plot is genious, the animation is brilliant and the serious is an all round win. All Otaku Magazine | January 2013

Amnesia and Love: T

o be honest I have no idea why we decided to feature this anime, not only is it an otome game adaptation but the story is about a girl who gets Amnesia, shocker, and then is surrounded by a group of pretty boys who are either ex-boyfriends or mysterious spirits. The only little twist I remotely liked was that each male characters personality was based on a suit in a deck

A story of Confussion

of cards and that in the game she wakes up in a cage. Don’t get me wrong, the story line has potential but when it comes from a place like Idea Factory; the masterminds behind Mars of Destruction and Skelter Heaven, respectively the worst and second worst rated anime on MAL of all time; I doubt that potential is being fulfilled. However every stormy cloud of mushy romantic doom has

its silver lining and this anime’s saving grace may just be that it’s being animated by Brains Base, one of the best studios out there at the moment. So this may actually turn out to be a good series but we will have to see, the first episode has been released and we can’t tell much about the series from it other than that it is a little confusing at best. -Ed

any years ago a young girl walked into a video store looking for a good movie. At the time the video store had a section at the back labelled Japanese Animation and as she browsed she came upon a series called Haibane Renmei. That girl now sits in front of a computer screen writing a review on the anime series that turned her into an otaku.

First episode: October 9, 2002 Final episode: December 18, 2002 Program creator: Yoshitoshi ABe Network: Fuji Television Genres: Drama, Animation, Anime

As viewers, we follow the arrival of Rakka, who like all renmei, is born from a cocoon into a town called Glie. This mysterious town is surrounded by a wall that none may enter or leave, cutting both Renmei and non-Renmei

inhabitancy off from the real world. Speculation flourishes as to what the town is—heaven, hell, purgatory, something entirely different. Perhaps the Renmei are victims of murder, or suicide. Signs point in all directions in this series, always leading you to a million questions but nothing is ever really apparent until the last moment. This perplexing ‘slice of life’ (or so it has been categorised) exists in a realm of its own. While it fills the same slow paced, pastel colored animation that occupies most slice of life stories, it seems to hold a dark undertone that sits on the peripherals of your mind nagging at your unconscious. It is never an overt darkness but rather a slight twist in the fabric of reality that makes you think about what is really going on and why. ABe’s mastery of omis-

sion has become an art in which he gives away just enough to intrigue but not enough to satisfy, keeping you hooked on anticipation. Through Rakka we discover that the Renmei are secondclass citizens, forced to work simple jobs for second hand clothing and food. They are often ignored by the townspeople allowing Rakka to wonder where she pleases, but as Rakka’s curiosity gets the better of her, we come to realize that something disturbing is at work in the town, something even its inhabitants don’t recognise. Now that I look back on it as a more experienced otaku I recognise that the animation is sketchy and stiff and sub translation was ok at best but I would still recomend it

any day of the week.

Yusuke Yamamoto 8-Bit Tokyo MX January 2, 2013 – ongoing

The latest addition in the ‘moe girls doing X activity’. This time it’s…wait for it…mountain climbing! The studio is 8-bit, known mostly for doing Infinite Stratos. On the positive side though, the manga didn’t show any sign of skeeviness or harems or underage arse shots. It looked like it came from an honest love of mountain climbing. This is probably one of more promising shows of the season. I mean, what do you want? It’s winter, pickings are always slim during winter. Moe mountain climbing could be good? The trick with these Moe Girls Doing X Activity things is they have to make it about the actual activity rather than the moeblobs. Moeblobs do not make engaging characters but they do make for an amusing counterbalance to the activity. Having one of the chief guys in bringing EVOL to life working on this puts hope in my heart that he’ll get the balance right with Moe Mountain Climbing.

All Otaku Magazine | January 2013

While We Await An Internet Connection At this point in time I feel it is a good opportunity to pass the time with another ‘brain vent’. I have begun a phase of self improvement whereby I consider myself as a person and take a cold hard look at the faults I have. While some who read this may feel that it is a little too late to be actioning New Year’s Resolutions, you have to realize that our resolutions have no weight in them. For one, we tend to make them off the cuff without truly considering what it is we are aiming towards. For another, we make them thinking of who we would like to impress and then utter or proclaim them drunkenly at parties without really considering that the improvement of one’s self is just that: it is for yourself and nobody else. With this in mind, the pace of my progress has been sedate but what is important is that it has been consistent (something my boss always drives home whenever chatting to me about my performance). When I have completed a jog, the feeling I experience is wholesome and satisfying because I am doing it for myself. When I save cash each month and manage to kill off my debts faster, I feel in control and happy because I am meeting my own deadlines and not that of another. Self motivation, I feel, is not something easily gained. It requires time and it requires having to have a sincere and honest chat with yourself before, during and after you have attempted your various actions. Self satisfaction drives you far better than the need to impress those you do not like and this, I feel, is something I wish I had known a lot earlier. I have often remarked in company, to those who have become disillusioned with their progress in life, that they need to become their own best friend. And when I eventually did, it was not as jagged a pill as I thought it may be (if I may quote Alanis). Many times we will need to make hard decisions for ourselves and we then tend to blow the so-called forseeable results out of proportion when the reality could not be further from the truth. Yes, we all want to be accepted and congratulated for our brilliance, but from who? From those we do not like? From past lovers or friends who we will still cling to but have no hope of ever repairing our relationships with? From parents who we adore but tend to disagree with? Or from the strangers in the street. Have a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself ‘Do I really like this person and know what he/she wants?’ In the meantime I am having fun and losing weight while I am at it. Got to love any excuse to flex in the mirror.

common place. However after reading a report about a supposed time traveller attempting to sabotage the Swedish company CERN, we decided to look into the matter and find the hard facts behind this great series.

The Story behind the story

Time Travellers from the future

T

he name John Titor is a popular one among Otaku world-wide. As many of you will know he is the mysterious back character of the ever popular Steins;Gate series who claimed to be a time travelling soldier from the year 2036. According to the story he arrived in the year 2000 to warn people of a future where civil-war is

For those of you didn’t know, John Titor was the name used by a man claiming to be a time traveller from the year 2036, upon his sudden appearance on several forums across America he announced that he was here to change our future. He appeared on the 2nd of November in 2000 under the user name of TimeTravel_0 and just like series, he stuck around for roughly a year before he disappeared. At the time the posts had nothing to do with future events but instead had to do solely with how his time machine worked, people asked questions on the forum and he answered them occasionally posting images of the machine and it’s manual. But Titor was supposedly a soldier in the civil war and had only limited knowledge of how the machine worked, when he explained it many science institutes claimed that his theories were probable but unlikely while others dismissed it outright. It was not until January 2001 that the name John Titor was actually published when one of the forums he signed onto required a full user name, but he only used the name for three months as he suddenly disappeared in late March of the same year. While some view his statements on what happened in his future as predictions he himself stated that our time lines were different and that the events he had mentioned may not happen. One of his first “predictions” was that as of the year due to the coming nuclear war between the worlds nations the Olympic Games would not be held from the 2004 and onwards. He also described a drastically changed future in which the United States had broken into five smaller regions, the environment and infrastructure had been devastated by a nuclear attack, and most other world powers had been destroyed.

“During the formative years of modern science fiction, writers warned against the Grandfather Paradox, in which a time traveler might visit the past, kill his or her ancestors, and end up never being born. But perhaps what they were really warning against was time-travel fiction itself, with mind-bending ideas and thrilling twists that—upon more careful consideration—usually turned out to be full of logical loopholes.”

The Time Machine “Titor described the time machine on several occasions. In an early post, he described it as a “stationary mass, temporal displacement unit powered by two top-spin, dual positive singularities”, producing a “standard off-set Tipler sinusoid”. The earliest post was more explicit, saying it contained the following: Two magnetic housing units for the dual micro singularities An electron injection manifold to alter mass and gravity micro singularities A cooling and X-ray venting system Gravity sensors, or a variable gravity lock Four main cesium clocks Three main computer units According to the posts, the device was installed in the rear of a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible and later moved to a 1987 truck having four-wheel drive. Titor further claimed that the “Everett-Wheeler model of quantum physics” was correct. This model, better known as the many-worlds interpretation, posits that every possible outcome of a quantum decision actually occurs in a separate “universe”. Titor stated that this was the reason the grandfather paradox would not occur; following the logic of the argument, Titor would be killing a different John Titor’s grandfather in a timeline other than his own. ...The grandfather paradox is impossible. In fact, all paradox is impossible. The Everett-Wheeler-Graham or multiple world theory is correct. All possible quantum states, events, possibilities, and outcomes are real, eventual, and occurring. The chances of everything happening someplace at some time in the superverse is 100%.”

Soon after he left the threads he had created became corrupted, and fewer posts were saved but in 2003 fans of Titor started a site where his story was retold and released to the public. To date, the story has been retold on numerous web sites, in a book, a play and an anime series. But what exactly is his story? Well Titor claimed that he was a soldier from the future based in Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida, who was assigned to a governmental time-travel project. He had originally been sent back to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer which he said was needed to “debug” various legacy computer programs in 2036 and

referenced the UNIX 2038 problem. Titor had been selected for this mission specifically, given that his paternal grandfather was directly involved with the assembly and programming of the 5100. Titor claimed to be on a stopover in the year 2000 for “personal reasons”, he also said he had been trying to alert anyone that would listen about the threat of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease spread through beef products and about the possibility of civil war within the United States. -Ed

When questioned about them by an online subscriber, Titor also expressed an interest in mysteries such as UFOs (which remained unexplained in his time). Titor suggested that UFOs and Extra-terrestrials might be travelers from much further into the future than his own time, with superior time machines.

Anime Personality

“Remember, you need to crawl before you can walk.”

I

met Sashi online right when my interest in cosplay boomed. I was on the lookout for someone I could commission for some cosplay items and Sashi was the perfect person to ask. She has also been my go-to person when ordering good quality wigs. 1. When did you start cosplaying and why?

Sasha Perdigao Cosplay Queen of SA

The first time I cosplayed was in 2003 in Toronto at an anime convention called Anime North. I can’t really pin point my exact reason for cosplaying, it was just something I desperately wanted to do after discovering it. Around 2001/2002 I began discovering Anime and Manga and from many hours searching for things anime/ manga related online I discovered cosplay. People dressing up as characters and going to conventions. Ever since I was young I’ve always loved fancy dress parties and I was always the odd one out dressing up as something nobody else did. So I think it’s partly my love for art/animation and general creativity that peaked my interest. At heart, I’m actually a really shy person. I won’t say that cosplaying as another character allows me to become someone else, I find it as a way of expressing creativity. I really enjoy the process of actually making the costume, figuring out how to make things, learning something along the way and having the chance to put it all together for people to see. 2. How do you decide what to cosplay? Well, I personally don’t really like cosplaying very popular characters and sometimes go for a more obscure choice. When I first started cosplaying I would choose characters that I think suited my “look” as in having the same hair style/colour etc. Characters that I knew I could pull of fairly easily. But when I began using wigs then their were no limitations to which characters I’d be able to cosplay. Different characters are chosen for different reasons, sometimes I like an outfit. Other times I love the charac-

25

All Otaku Magazine | January 2013

ter, the look of a character or a character that looks like me. 3. What characters have been your favorite to cosplay and why? Without a doubt it would definitely be cosplaying as Fuu from “Samurai Champloo”. I put a lot of hard work into that costume, studying how to tie an obi and wear a yukata. I made it as authentic as possible and it paid off. Though I wore a wig for the costume, everyone thought it was my real hair and that I looked exactly like the character. She also has a huge array of poses that were so fun to do as well. I think my Fuu costume is the only one that when I wear it I feel that I actually am Fuu!

I’d say my PSE 12 costume was probably the hardest to put together since it was the first time that I sewed pleather. I made boots and gloves from scratch! It was also the first time I made molds and did castings out of plastic and polyurethane for all the horns. Till this day, I still feel that it’s a very underrated costume simply because it’s not a popular character at all (it was based on art work by Range Murata).

...I don’t really like cosplaying very popular characters and sometimes go for a more obscure choice... 6. Can you share a few tips for beginners?

4. What are the positives and negatives of cosplaying in your opinion?

I think I’ve mentioned it before, start SIMPLE!!!

Well as far as the positives go, you’re able to learn so much if you’re willing to take the time and trouble creating your own costumes. I also find it to be a great creative outlet for someone like me. By nature I am an artist and this is one way of allowing me to express myself. I’ve learned how to sew and solve a lot of problems along the way, all self taught. Though I do scour the internet a lot for any help that I need. I think the main negative is that cosplaying can be a very expensive hobby. Materials can really cost a fortune as well as wigs etc. so I’d really suggest cosplaying characters that you know that you don’t need a wig for etc to cut down costs. It is possible to cosplay on a budget, you just need to be smart about it. Often, ideas work in theory but when put into practice you realise they don’t work and you need to start all over again. This may or may not be a bad thing since you can learn from it but it also most often times means having to spend more money :/ Obviously when you cosplay, you will attract a lot of attention, that attention unfortunately isn’t always positive.

Too many n00bs tend to want to cosplay the most complex characters.I really don’t know why. What tends to happen in these cases is that they never finish or even begin the costume because it’s too much of a daunting task. Choose a character with a fairly simple outfit that you think you may resemble (same hair colour/length etc). Start with putting pieces of clothing together and altering that instead of trying to make something from scratch. If you can’t sew, find a seamstress to make a costume for you but be prepared to pay a decent amount for it. Remember that just “wearing” a costume isn’t enough, you need to take make-up, hair, wigs and accessories into consideration too when cosplaying.

5. What has been the hardest costume for you to create/obtain so far?

-KomboKitten

To me it’s like building a puzzle, you need to put all the pieces together to achieve the final result.

In less than a year, Luckey has gone from an enterprising hobbyist to a widely discussed industry figure, bringing virtual reality back into the discussion after many years without progress, and eliciting glowing praise from Carmack, Valve’s Gabe Newell and Mojang’s Markus Persson in the process....”

You are essentially transported into the game, with the headset recording every tilt and turn of your head and body.

A

s many of you game lovers out there may have noticed, last year was the beginning of the next gen game race as a large percentage of the gaming industry geared up for a new generation of gaming consoles. From the Nintendo Wii U to the ever illusive Xbox 720 the next few years a full of promising things for the super gamer; but none are as exhilarating as Palmer Luckey and John Carmack’s Oculuc Rift prototype!!! Since the 80’s the ultimate goal for the gaming industry has been to create a device that would allow gamers to think that they were in a virtual world, where they could see and hear their surroundings as if they were really there. Well this year we take a huge step toward this goal. When long-time VR hobbyists John Carmack and Palmer Luckey sat down to design this piece of technology he told himself that they wanted to create something that would completely cover the full range of human vision allowing the person to look around as if they were really in the game. The team crammed a 1,280 x 800 display into a pair of glasses that present a wide, truly immersive field of

view. Paired with a PlayStation Move sensor to track the movement of the persons head and a built in headset provide surround sound to the player, and voilĂ ! You have the next big thing in gaming. However being a prototype this ingenious piece of tech is not perfect; players are still required to use controllers to interact with their surroundings so essentially the headset only replaces your screen. According to test reports the game play is still a little dis-orientating at times and the graphics are low resolution but we would expect nothing more from a ground breaking gadget that is still in its teething phase. In fact from what we hear of the Oculus it has surpassed any expectations virtual reality enthusiasts had for it, so much so that gaming companies like were more than willing to jump on board and support Carmack with development. Talks of programming games to be Oculus ready have been going for months now and with the first version of the Oculus only costing gamers $500 people will be able to afford both the tech and the games when they hit the market.

Even with the low-resolution display, the effect of using the Oculus Rift as you play is mind-blowing.

After 128 Days In Jail, Arma III Developers Finally Get To Go Home Publisher Fujimi Shobo is announcing that an anime adaptation of Jun Sakyō’s Yūsha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shūshoku o Ketsui Shimashita. (I, Who Didn’t Become a Hero, Reluctantly Decided to Find a Job.)

light novel series is in the works. Two manga series have also been green-lit in Fujimi Shobo’s Age Premium and Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazines.

Two game developers from Czech Republic-based Bohemia Interactive (Arma III), who were jailed in Greece for the past 218 days, will finally be able to go home, according to Czech media reports translated on a site dedicated to the men’s release. Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar had been facing up to 20 years in prison on charges of espionage after they were caught photographing a Greek military base. The developers had

maintained that they were sightseeing and possibly scouting locations for an upcoming game. The two had been denied bail in November, but strong lobbying for their release appears to have paid off. The developer’s release on bail for 5000 Euros each (about $6700) allows them to return home to the Czech Republic where they will presumably be safe from Greek prosecution. The arrangement was formalized through a conversation between the prime ministers of Greece and the Czech Republic

Writing a language that one is learning is something that I feel to be very important. Humans have been learning language for centuries through conventional means such as writing and conversation. The Internets have been around for normal civilians to use for just a wee bit over 15 years now. The brain has evolved to learn languages using conventional methods. When storing items in your memory, you need to let your brain know whether the information is important or not otherwise its dumped into your subconscious making it very difficult for retrieval. The best way I found to learn kanji or new words was to give them a mnemonic - its like a label that you attach to stuff to help you find it later. Just as an example, the word “Miru” means “to look.” To remember the word you can make up your own label like “Look at this gorgeous Meal!” - “Meal” sounding similar to “Miru.” Some books may provide mnemonics to remember kanji but its always best to take a few seconds and be imaginative to think of your own - no matter how cheesy it may sound. When you say or hear something cheesy, you encounter an emotion where your brain stimulates a chemical reaction which can also help you remember words much more easier. While there are many websites where one can learn languages, don’t rely on them completely and make sure to keep a healthy balance of language learning by using your body to learn through writing (with pen) and speaking. What I would do is read them on the train and when I came across some word I didn’t understand, I would fold a dog ear in the corner of the page. After getting back home, I would look up the word but keep the dog ear folded. When I read the manga second time around, if I remembered what the word was then I could unfold the dog ear - if not then I would have to keep it folded and repeat the process until I understood the whole manga. While there are many websites where one can learn languages, don’t rely on them completely and make sure to keep a healthy balance of language learning by using your body to learn through writing (with pen) and speaking.

“Playdead called and used visually gruesome imagery for the boy’s deaths to steer the player from unworkable solutions.”

Let the Games Begin W

hile messing around on the old xbox a while back I happened to come upon a demo for theis stunning game known as Limbo. At first I was excited to play this seemingly disturbing game and I nearly scratched my eyes out while waiting the 20 minutes it took for the demo to download. But once it was in my grasp, I grabbed my silver consol controller and began working my way gingerly through this dark little arcade game. I woke up in a dark forest made entirely out of silhouettes, the look and feel of this game are amazing yet incredibly creepy with its grainy monochromatic tones. The design is simple and minimal ambient sound puts you a little on edge as you hear every step your character takes. While this game

is hardly the kind to scare anyone to death it has been said to capture the feel of a noir horror, it’s dark and sinister presentation is a fine example of “video game as art”. As I eagerly began to play this new game of mine I was enchanted by its simplicity and smooth playing, I had expected that such a modest looking game would have a few issues with flow and character movement, but I am happy to say that I was entirely wrong! The game plays like a dream. Something you don’t see that often in arcade style games. The characters movement is smooth and agile despite the fact that his movements are limited to walking, jumping and grabbing things, I

A Journey Through Limbo find this made the game more difficult but realistic as I don’t know many kids who can keep up with the Prince of Persia. The games environment is just as quick to react and the games progression is a fun but gruesome challenge. You are called to think and solving your way out of a problem with logical progression and try not to get your little boy torn to bits in the process. I will admit that when I met my first challenge I was shocked at the brutality of the game. Needless to say when the demo came to an abrupt stop I was quick to fine a copy of the game from a friend of mine who like me enjoyed it thoroughly as well. The creators of this magnificent game, Playdead, originally released the game in July of 2010 exclusively for Xbox but when the game became a hit, becoming the third highest grossing Xbox Live Arcade game of that year; they decided to re-release it as part of a retail game pack along with Trials HD and ‘Splosion Man in April 2011. After which it was ported to the PlayStation Network and Microsoft Windows via Steam, a Mac OS X version was even created last year so that fans of this game could play it platform wide. In its first year Limbo made around $7.5 million in revenue and took home several awards, this is definitely a win for the independent Danish game developing company. In fact this is Playdead’s first ever production and first game to ever be released by them, and if this is an example of what they can do then I am looking forward to anything they may come up with in the future. This game has just the right amount of everything to keep you interested. Be it the general look and feel or the idea of the game, you will stay hooked even if you aren’t all that into arcade games. The sinister nature of this black and white world will have any creep fan glued to their screen. The only thing I was a little disappointed was that the game was a little short. I had to go back and play it a second time just to have my full. “Limbo is as close to perfect at what it does as a game can get.” - Destructoid gave it 10/10 - Ed

Rocksmith In 2005 the world got its first taste in music simulation via a specially designed controller in the form of a guitar and Guitar Hero on PS2. Naturally millions of geeks worldwide flocked to stores to buy this revolutionary new idea with the hopes of being able to learn the guitar by playing. Being exposed to the game however, left something to be desired in the mind of the masses. Activision had a brilliant idea, the execution was just not there yet. At the time it was a huge hit, players playing themselves silly on fake guitars, bass guitars, drums (at a later stage) and even on computer keyboards. The game and experience was entertaining, and rightly so. Kudos to Activision. In 2012 however, Ubisoft got together with several leading guitar manufacturers and said: “Listen, this is what we have in mind, help us make it happen. We want to take a real guitar. plug it into a console or PC and teach people how to actually learn and play guitar via this software interface.” The result, is Rocksmith. An absolute masterpiece with regards to a teaching medium in both guitar and bass. However Ubisoft, not merely content to put such a groundbreaking idea out in the market, said: “We want people who actually want to learn how to play to submit a small resume. We will chose a couple of candidates from amongst them to come into our offices and prove that even beginners will have what it takes to learn the guitar from scratch and develop as they learn.” Ok, so they didn’t really say it like that, but in essence, that is what it boiled down to. Thousands of entries later, and a couple of people were chosen to do just that.

The interface starts you out just tuning your guitar and testing if the guitar interfaces with your preferred medium of choice (Xbox, Ps3, PC) and starts you off on your first song. I must admit, my first song went Terribly... with a capital T. However, the game didn’t bombard me with notes but kept things simple and relevant to my level of skill. The game breaks songs up into sections, and depending on how successfully you play these sections, it will either level up, or level down your section based on how you did. So basically, if you are good, then it throws in a new note or two and sees how you do, or if you are struggling, takes away a note or two just to help you get back into it There is also an option in-game called the “Riff Repeater”. It takes a section of the song (the section you generally struggled with) and allows

you to practice only that section. There are several different ways the riff repeater allows you to play these as well, from slowing the music down and speeding it back up as you get used to it, or taking an experienced piece and slowly adding more and more notes until your fingers can’t keep up anymore. There is also an option called free style, which stops the piece at the next note if you miss it, so you can take your time an look at the strings, hand placement etc. Gradually the game will increase the difficulty requirements as you get more and more used to playing your guitar. It’s like having a guitar instructor behind you with infinite patience. Of course, sooner or later having a real life instructor becomes handy of the techniques that are described (in detail) in the game still doesn’t make sense to you. Personally, I went to my local music shop and was lucky enough to find an experienced guitar player there who was kind enough to help me out with the more tricky techniques. The game remains fun however in its ability to take learning and making it intriguing to players. There are all sorts of mini games that help you practice specific techniques. From baseball to galaga type mini games, they all focus on helping you get better at specific aspects of playing guitar. The game also takes you on a musical journey from being an amateur, to being a local support act, all the way to being a leading international act, playing in front of thousands of people. (funny, cardboard cut-out looking people, but it still made me nervous) Loads of practice will get you there, and having fun along the way keeps it interesting, if not a little hard on your fingertips... All in all, I would highly recommend Rocksmith to people who would sincerely like to play guitar but just didn’t have the opportunity to do so. Its hours and hours of entertainment, you get to learn some fantastic songs on the guitar, and can even go online to download a couple of your choosing if Rocksmith do not have what you fancy. I take my hat off to Ubisoft on this one.

GAME CORNER

The Walking Dead Before I heard about this game I had been watching the series and thought that I would love to become involved in the plot via a game version. Having been able to experience this has been such a blessing of entertainment! I wish there was more of the game left to play! Thankfully we will see future releases. I steamrolled each chapter in a few hours and man was it refreshing! Why you ask? Because it is not a plain and simple shoot em up. You often get some quiet time to think things through before acting, aiding the strategy side of things nicely. I loved exploring the environment of the game while finding all kinds of important items along the way that can alter the plot depending on what you find and how you use it. I also love the comic art style of it - no trying real hard to make things look realistic and failing horribly like so many other games. I think the animation style also gives the artists more freedom to express things creatively. You have to figure the history of your character out as you go along, which was probably the most tedious thing for me in this game. It was actually really easy to play through though. I died a few times but the restart happens right in the players struggle so I could carry on immediately with virtually no time wasted, which was much appreciated. We get to use a vast array of weaponry in this game. What I liked about it was that many of those weapons where every day objects or tools. This made it more realistic. Your greatest weapon in this game is your decision making it seems, and you greatest enemy... well - I will leave that up to players to discover.

You have to watch out who you lie to (the game forces us to lie many times!) or else it will come back and kick you in the ass, just like in real life. I always prefer picking the good side in games so lying wasn’t on my agenda, but the choices you have to make during a zombie apocalypse obviously can’t all be so easy! It doesn’t really help that the character you play, Lee, is convicted of murder and quite known for it. At times the game left me mildly traumatized. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers but I will say that the game forces crazy decisions onto the player. As you progress you are entangled into some sick stuff! I guess what happens is not unrealistic apart from the actual zombie situation, but I never expected to encounter what I did in this game. Do I find this game worth purchasing? YES. If you are lucky enough to be able to purchase it and are a fan of The Walking Dead, then get this game! I know it might sound short but after you have played it you can share it with a friend too, allowing you to get more service out of it. I will say this, to be brutally honest. The end of my playthrough left me dissapointed and worried. Many others feel differently though and had different endings to theirs. You will just have to play and see where you end up! It’s possible to start over and make different choices, but I ain’t got no time for that! Looking forward to the 2nd Walking Dead game release! -KomboKitten

BAND PROFILE Origin: Nagoya, Japan Genres: Metalcore, alternative metal Years active: 2003–present Labels: Enter Brain Associated acts: lynch. Website: deathgaze.jp Members: Ai, Takaki, Kosuke, Naoki Past members: Hazuki, Kanna, Sou, Naoto

DEATHGAZE For most of us when we think of Jpop and Japanese music we see images of Hatsune Miku or Kaito on a virtual stage with a million fans, but today Japanese music has branched out into many different genres. From normal pop and rock bands to elecro, rave, visual Kei and even hard core metal bands. One such band is DEATHGAZE. The group was formed in July of 2003 by four passionate musicians, Hazuki, Ai, Naoki, and Kanna in the city of Nagoya. For nearly a year the band played small gigs around the city until in February of 2004 the band released their first single “294036224052”. This hit single allowed them to tour for a month (from March to April) before their vocalist, Hazuki, left to form his own band called Lynch, along with him was their guitarist

Kanna who joined Puppet Mammy. The remaining two DEATHGAZE members then contacted Naoto and Sou and DEATHGAZE was complete again. The band released several more singles and their first album, before Sou left in late 2006 to marry. Once again DEATHGAZE was without a front man and in March of 2007 the band announced an eighth-month long hiatus. On November 11, 2007, the band came out of hibernation and Ai was announced lead vocalist for the now three man band. He is also the main composer and lyric writer for the band as well as art director for all of their CD releases even before Hazuki left. DEATHGAZE continued as a three-member band until March, 2008 when a new base guitarist was found, Ko-

suke. Again nearly a year later in April 2009, guitarist Naoto retired not only from the band but from music, but he stated that if possible in the future he would return. From then on Naoto was replaced by Takaki (ex. ASS’n’ARROW) who became an official member on November 20, 2009. DEATHGAZE plays a mixed style of alternative metal with some elements of hard rock (mostly in more recent releases), you will also hear the

occasional ballad from them but for the most part they are categorised as nagoya kei, a subgenre of visual kei focusing on a darker sound and appearance. However that is not to say that they sound like every other band they have a unique style that comes from having so many different band members contribution. You will be able to see the different influences in their albums and how they have evolved over the years. -Ed

KIMMIDOLLS: INSPIRATION FROM THE EAST

Kimmidolls® I

Inspiration From The East

f you have ever seen one of these dolls then as someone who appreciates anime I am sure you have fallen head over heels in love with them. But what was it that inspired the Australian based company TAG to create such charming dolls. According to their website “the Kimmidoll® brand was conceived following a long standing passion with elegant decorative gifts and home ware items inspired by Eastern culture.” The Kimmidolls were modelled after traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls, these dolls have been around for centuries and where given as gifts during the Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan. Originally the dolls were given to loved ones because of their simple beauty, they were elegant little wood carvings with no hands or or feel but those painted on them, much like solid Babushka dolls. These dolls where handcrafted by the pottery and carpentry artisans of the time known as Kijiya, to be given away as tokens of love and friendship. It is the simple idea of bestowing luck and good fortune upon friends and family that sparked the creation of the Kimmidoll® brand. The company TAG was started in 1978 by Brian Aird who had a long standing fascination with Kokeshi dolls, but the company was not created to design Kimmidolls not at first anyway. In fact TAG designed and manufactured stationary and greeting cards for companies like Anne Geddes, for many years the company exhibited at the Hong Kong Gift Fair and they were successful. Fortunately Brian’s son, Nick, saw an opportunity to grow the company into something more than just a gift card manufacturer. For many years he had believed that the company should start its own brand that way they would have the freedom to do what they wanted and not work on contract. With that in mind the company began product design in 2007 with the Kokeshi doll in mind. When the brand was launched it was a huge success, TAG had created 12 different dolls in two different sizes but they still flew off the shelves. Today the company has over 100 different doll designs each with their own Japanese name and life value, and while the Kimmidoll® range started with dolls alone they have now

branched out manufacturing a number of subsidiary lines such as key rings, bags, compact mirrors, stationary and much more. In 2009 Tag Launched Kimmi Junior®, a line of dolls created for kids 4 to 9 that represent the values of friendship. However TAGs goal for the last few years has been to expand, the company has been contracting other companies across the globe to help them branch out into things like clothing, cell-phone themes and covers, shoes and even lingerie. The dolls are recognised in over 50 countries worldwide for their unassuming yet gorgeous designs and the number seems to be growing experientially. At the beginning of this year TAG released their newest collection concept known as Ukido Dolls. They are the representation of the values in a warrior, things like honour and loyalty are displayed by this new line in the form of miniature ninja or samurai. It is this blending or contemporary and traditional styles has sky rocketed the Kimmidoll® name into becoming a global success known and loved by many.

Kimmidolls® are a modern westernised version of the traditional Kokeshi doll made to represent and celebrate life’s true values. Kimmidolls® stand out through their sophisticated and chic artistry.
