HUMILITY

is the refreshing emotion of imperfection. Obstacles in life are similar to obstacles in design, they cause you to struggle and to grow. You grow through adversity.

The tree itself embodies many aspects that the design of the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute strives to incorporate, qualities of guidance, dignity and support. The simple use of a tree as a landmark was a major design element integrated into the facility through the use of wayfinding. Major zones were broken down into the four seasons. The warm FALL colors evoke a more intimate, residential atmosphere in the waiting area and public spaces. Cool WINTER colors evoke cleanliness and tranquility for the PET. The color palette of SPRING provides a balance between stimulation and relaxation in the exam and physical therapy areas. Bright SUMMER colors encourage motivation in a productive atmosphere in the private administrative areas.

Guidance

The concept of a tree influenced the design of the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute. The tree itself embodies dignity, serenity and guidance. DIGNITY is the structure of the tree, SERENITY the shade and protection provided by the tree and guidance is the root support system of the tree. The patients should leave with a sense of pride and confidence for overall dignity. While within the space, the patients and staff should feel calm and comfortable for serenity to be achieved and with the help of the clear signage and obvious pathways, GUIDANCE can be gained.

Wayfinding and SIGNAGE were main elements that were considered from start to finish when designing the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute. Because WAYFINDING can cause confusion for people of all ages, the implementation of large and LEGIABLE signage was used throughout the facility. Depending on the zone, different color signage was used along the pathways as well as similar signage for room number identification.

The FALL zone consists of the reception desk, waiting area, research library, children’s area, bistro and public restrooms. For the purpose of COMFORT and familiarity, this area was designed to feel residential. To FAMILIARIZE patients with the facility, a map is provided immediately upon exiting the elevator. Research proved that familiarizing patients with upcoming surroundings helps to CALM and relax them.

In the WINTER zone, the lower radial panels are integrated with a column to help clearly define the nurse’s station for easy IDENTIFICATION. The winter area is made up of a nurse’s station, pre-exam, blood draw, injection rooms, PET/ scan rooms, hot lab, control room and a restroom. The color pallet of the winter zone evokes CLEANLINESS and SERENITY to calm the patients in this space that might normally feel intimidating.

Injection Room

The SPRING zone is comprised of the residential pod, physical therapy, neuro-psych rooms and exam rooms. This area is made up of a STIMULATING color palette balanced by neutrals. Research shows that when spaces underwhelm Alzheimer’s patients, it can cause irritation and moodiness. The purpose of the residential pod is to study Alzheimer’s patients as they would be seen in their own home while they carry out everyday tasks that can often be hindered by Alzheimer’s. A muted color palette was design in order to create a WARM and COMFORTABLE atmosphere while not distracting from the research taking place.

Staff Office

The SUMMER zone consists of private administration made up of the family consultation, conference room, private/shared offices, work area, restrooms, break area and classroom/training room. ERGONOMICS for the staff’s long work days and natural day light were main elements incorporated in this area. Storage that doubles as seating as well as personal and COLLABORATIVE work spaces allow for a variety of work environments, all to encourage PRODUCTIVE research towards the Alzheimer’s disease.

Retail, Group Project (J. Jurich, H. Rosenblum, M. Sheppard), Spring 2011, Generated with AutoCad

HYDE was the original clothing of man; it was RAW, simple and served it’s purpose. By stripping away the retail norms of hectic and CHAOTIC, the design of HYDE came to life. The simple elements found in nature such as structure, cycle and organic inspired the design of HYDE. Creating that sense of CURIOSITY and interest was something of importance and was carried throughout the design from the slight reveal of the storefront to the layout of the merchandise. HYDE is EVOLVED and more than just a retail store, it is an EXPERIENCE.

STRUCTURE

CYCLE

ORGANIC

STRUCTURE gives meaning and hierarchy to nature. The arrangement and placement of spaces within HYDE are molded after the efficiency that structure creates. CYCLE was interpreted as the flow throughout the store from department to department. Like the CYCLE of nature, it just works.

Reflected Ceiling Plan

ORGANIC forms mimicking nature were integrated in the design of HYDE. Curves and angles help to divide the spaces within HDYE.

TEXTURE and pattern were two very important concepts incorporated throughout the design of HYDE. From fabrics and flooring to wall treatment, natural elements flow from the exterior to the interior spaces of HYDE. This texture and PATTERN tie back into the driving inspiration of nature and all that it has to offer. The IMPERFECTION of natural wood grain and the rough texture of a sisal rug breathe true to qualities found in nature.

Accessories and Jewelry Department

Cosmetic Department

The furniture selection within HYDE consists of a mixture between fashionable modern and NATURAL chic. The combinations of these two styles bring together the idea of modern man and what we can learn from the SIMPLICITY of the natural environment. This mixture of styles creates an UNEXPECTED design that blends with the overall intention of HYDE.

Exterior Entrance

The layout of HYDE has a STRATEGIC reasoning for the placement of spaces within. The CYCLE of nature came into this aspect of design. As a customer makes their way through the store they can grab items as they go, try the articles on and proceed straight to checkout. This cycle is something that is EFFICIENT and keeps customers coming back again and again.

The Harn is dedicated to promoting the power of the arts while INSPIRING and EDUCATING visitors with its variety of art work which include photography, Asian, African, modern and contemporary art. ARCHITECTURE and ART have served as the foundation for my design. Bringing together FORM and CREATIVITY is the combination of SOLID structures alongside ABSTRACT ideas.

Architecture

The DOOR, WINDOW, STAIR encompasses space as experienced in different ways. DOOR is seen as a threshold from one void to another. WINDOW is expressed as a moment in time that can be experienced and STAIR is the transportation from one moment to another.
