2 Interview with Deon Viljoen 4

Editor’s note Dear SunSwop member SunSwop is entering its eighth year of business and what a year 2015 was for the six Resorts making up one of South Africa’s most successful timeshare companies. The highlight of the year was the group-wide implementation of Merlin – the cloud based, interactive dedicated timeshare platform that allows all Resorts and back office service departments to communicate. As a result of the implementation of Merlin there has been a (surprisingly) high - 90% - uptake from Owners to receive electronic information vs the previous paperbased method. For the first time, we distributed Annual Financial Statements and Levy Statements via email. More Owners than ever took the opportunity to make comments and suggestions and submit proxies. We know nothing beats having an easy-to-use directory (whether it is electronic or paper based) to plan your future breaks. We trust you will enjoy using the 2016 SunSwop Resort Directory. INTERVIEW WITH DEON VILJOEN

2015 in review Ed: Deon, we understand you are justifiably proud of the recent Trip Advisor results announcing that Southern Sun Resorts received six of the ten awards achieved by Tsogo Sun. No mean feat for the six Resorts. DV: Yes, we are also particularly proud of the recent national Lilizela Award that recognised Drakensberg Sun Resort as the hotel providing Sustainable Management Best Practice. Ed: Whilst we are talking best practice, please update us on the contentious issue of smoke free resorts. DV: Contentious it is. All our Resorts are smoke free. In an effort to recognise the needs of all guests, we have recently opened a cigar bar at Beacon Island. This all-weather area provides a comfortable air-conditioned room that is appropriately positioned. We are looking at providing similar facilities at our other Resorts. Ed: Sustainability remains a key objective? DV: Very much so. All properties have back-up power generation and water tanks. The water quality is monitored frequently and measures are in place should we need to filter water in the future. Each Resort supports a dedicated recycling bay where waste is separated by local SMME’s and measured before collection. Our objective for 2016 is to recycle 70% of the waste generated. This is up 20% on 2015’s results. Ed: Speaking of 2015’s objectives, please tell us about the projects completed. DV: Let’s start with a project that was less complicated than anticipated – the upgrade of guest bathrooms at Umhlanga Sands. We finished before the deadline and on budget! Sabi River Sun Hotel saw a R13 million investment during 2015. Closed for three months for the transformation, the Hotel reopened with a totally new-look restaurant and golf bar. The desilting of the Langspruit is another major

2

project at Sabi with phases 1 and 2 now completed. Hippos are looking forward to the completion of the final phase 3 which will ensure their visiting rights to Sabi.

into Sabi River Sun Resort and Drakensburg Sun Resort. Wayne Wilson and Roger Petyt respectively have settled in and are looking forward to the year ahead.

Guests at Cabana Beach Resort are putting the new sport and entertainment centre to good use. This comprises a multi-use astro turf surface that lends itself to action cricket and volley ball. The surrounding braai areas are proving popular with guests as is the new trailer park. Originally staff hostels, 50 trailer bays have been constructed.

Ed: To conclude, 2015 saw some controversial media attention about the timeshare industry. What are the results? DV: We’ve noticed an interesting trend emerging the popularity of the ‘traditional’ timeshare model, as used by Southern Sun Resorts. The issues raised against Points Clubs were recently withdrawn by the National Consumer Commission.

Both adults and children have been taken into consideration at Beacon Island where the renovation of the Sea Lounge, Lookout Room and public areas is complete. The upgrade of the adult swimming pool now includes a kiddies’ pool area. This is heated and the surrounding areas can accommodate umbrellas, loungers and access for wheelchairs.

Ed: Where to from here for Southern Sun Resorts? DV: Without giving the game away, we are considering investing in an exciting new timeshare development. Of course, our current Owners will be the first to be notified and will have a first right of ownership.

We’d like to congratulate newly appointed General Managers on their smooth transitions

INTERVIEW WITH PETER PIENAAR

Behind the scenes at SunSwop Ed: Peter, the last time we spoke, the SunSwop call centre had just moved from London to Cape Town. PP: The call centre move has been very well received by our members as indicated on the feedback received from our member satisfaction surveys. Our great team of call centre agents handling our members’ deposit and exchange requests is assisted by the SunSwop head office team in uMhlanga as well as the Interval International team in London. We handled 36 000 calls during 2015.

(Above): Peter Pienaar, General Manager, SunSwop.

Ed: Please tell us about the transaction levels during the course of 2015 and how these compare to previous years. PP: We have seen a steady increase in all types of transactions year on year since we started SunSwop in 2009 and 2015 was no different. We have added additional benefits for our members over the years which I believe have resulted in more and more members transacting with us. For example, the ability to deposit external resorts with us, our acceptance of split week deposits and our SunSwop Choices product offering. In addition to this we have maintained our exchange fees since launching SunSwop in 2009. Ed: Enlighten us on SunSwop Choices. PP: SunSwop Choices offers additional benefits to our current SunSwop membership. The main benefit is the ability for members to use their timeshare week to exchange into the Tsogo Sun portfolio of hotels in South Africa. For example, you’d be able to use your timeshare week to stay at the Beverley Hills Hotel or the Elangeni Hotel etc. This is a benefit unique to SunSwop Choices members. Another benefit is that SunSwop Choices members receive an additional year on the lifespan of their deposited week ie up to 4 years instead up to 3 years which regular

SunSwop members receive. The SunSwop Choices membership costs R1499 for a 5 year membership and members interested in finding out more are welcome to contact us. Ed: What were the bigger challenges during 2015? PP: We know we still have some way to go to make our online offering what we’d like it to be and this will be an ongoing process over the next few years. Demand for exchanges during peak times remains extremely high with availability during these periods limited due to the fact that owners of these weeks either use them themselves, or rent them out. Managing members’ expectations in this regard is important. The only way to guarantee a holiday during peak periods is to buy a week during these periods. Ed: We look forward to 2016 and continued great service from SunSwop. Thank you Peter for your input. Should readers have queries, how can they contact you? PP: Marley Eliziah, Member Services Manager (marley.eliziah@tsogosun.com). Peter Pienaar, General Manager (peter.pienaar@tsogosun. com) 031 561 2204.

TRADING POINTS GUIDE

CONSUMER ALERT ‘VOASA’ advises consumers to exercise extreme caution when being approached by companies claiming to be part of a class action against timeshare clubs and exchange companies. These entities are aggressively marketing their services to timeshare owners via emails, newspaper advertisements, etc. Currently no statuary legislation in South Africa exits which would permit ‘class actions.’ A court application is required to engage the formation of a group of persons and the criteria is strict. Any timeshare company within the borders of South Africa cannot be included in a class action subject to a foreign court i.e. USA, United Kingdom. or Europe, without that court including the South African jursidiction.

There are no such pending class actions We again urge timeshare owners to only make use of VOASA registered companies. In order to be registered with VOASA they have to comply with the relevant law and regulations applicable to their business and they would then also have to hold current fidelity fund certificate from the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB). So, if in doubt, ask to see their VOASA membership certificate and their EAAB fidelity fund certificate, or check the ‘members directory’ on the VOASA website www.voasa.co.za. And remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually isn’t a good idea

TRADING POINTS GUIDE To use your trading points you need to know the value of the week that you own. To find this, you would need to go to the relevant page in this directory which reflects the calendar and points value for the geographical region in which your resort is located. It is important that you know the week number and the size of the unit which you own. If, for example, you own a week at uMhlanga Sands, you would refer to the page which shows the values for the KZN North Coast region. RESORT

uMhlanga Sands Resort

OCC

Now refer to the calendar which shows the week numbers to determine the colour of the week owned for the particular year in which you wish to deposit your week, e.g. week 30 = Red for 2012. Take a look at the points table which shows your resort and look specifically for the full week value of a red week in the unit size which you own, e.g. if you own a 2 bedroom unit, the value of the week would be 6450 points.

To determine the value of the week into which you wish to exchange, you would use the same method, e.g.: • select the region in which the resort is situated • select the resort into which you wish to exchange • check the colour of the week into which you wish to exchange by using the regional calendar • select the unit size required E.g. if you wished to exchange into a 0/04 unit in week 20 (white week) at uMhlanga Sands, the value required for this exchange would be 3575 points. PLEASE NOTE: The calendars and trading points provided throughout this directory were correct at the time of printing and subject to change without notice. ** PLEASE NOTE that some units cannot accommodate six adults. The unit might have sleeper couches that can only fit children 12 years and younger. Kindly confirm this with your call centre agent. The trading points received for depositing your week with SunSwop are valid for the current year, plus two years.
