ESSENTIALS PHOTOSHOP CS6

BASTION ARTWORK

Photoshop CS6 beta includes all the features in Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CS6 Extended. Take this opportunity to try out the 3D image editing and quantitative image analysis capabilities of Photoshop Extended*, but note that—while these features will be included in the shipping version of Photoshop Extended—they will not be included in the shipping version of Photoshop.

Bastion is an action roleplaying video game produced by independent developer Supergiant Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It features a dynamic voiceover from a narrator, and is presented as a two-dimensional game with an isometric camera and a hand-painted, colorful art style. Bastion’s story follows the Kid as he collects special shards of rock to power a structure, the Bastion, in the wake of an apocalyptic Calamity.

ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD

WACOM INKLING

Adobe® Creative Cloud™ is the digital hub that lets you download and install every Adobe Creative Suite® 6 application; access online services for file sharing, collaboration, and publishing; and benefit from new apps and features as soon as they’re released — giving you the freedom to create anything you can imagine.

The Inkling digital sketch pen captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper.

Creative Cloud members can download and install CS6 applications in any language in which the products are available. Unlike owning the traditional licensed version of a Creative Suite product, Creative Cloud membership allows you to select from multiple languages. See the product links under system requirements below for the complete list of languages for each CS6 product.

Designed for rough concepting and creative brainstorming, Inkling is ideal for the front end of the creative process. Later, refine your work on your computer using an Intuos4 tablet or Cintiq interactive pen display. In addition to capturing your sketch, stroke by stroke, Inkling allows you to create layers in digital files while you sketch on paper. Digital files are transferred to your computer using the Inkling Sketch Manager software, and later, exported to applications such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator®. Files can also be opened with the included Inkling Sketch Manager software to edit, delete, add layers or change file formats.

A look at Photoshop CS6 Beta

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Beta For many people, Adobe’s nearly bi-annual update of its flagship Photoshop image editing program is an unnecessary upgrade. But each new version has introduced novel and welcome features that make them more than just expensive service packs. Photoshop CS5, for example, introduced Content-Aware fill, which was a revelation in image editing in 2010. Photoshop CS6 expands on Content-Aware editing functionality, but also will include a much-buzzed about deblurring tool that performs a deep analysis of your blurred photos to make up for your shaky camera movement.

Unfortunately, deblur isn’t part of the just-released Photoshop CS6 beta, which anyone can download right now from the Adobe Labs website (both for Windows and OS X). The sizable 1.7GB download is safe to try out-it has been very stable and for me so far--and won’t overwrite your previous versions of Photoshop. The trial lasts 60 days, and all you need is a free Adoble ID to register it for use.

For basic editing, the marquee and crop tools have been modified, with the former improved to show the dimensions of your selected area in real time as you drag a rectangle or ellipse. I’m not sure if this was a feature that was already in Photoshop before, but having it turned on by detaut is a welcome change. The crop tool gets weird, though. After you make a selection, you can move the image around behind the selected crop area, in addition to rescaling the dimensions and aspect ratio of your cropping box. It’s akin to how cropping works in iPhoto or even the iPhone’s camera roll, but without a touch interface. It’ll definitely take a little getting use to. Sometime in the first half of 2012, Adobe plans to release Photoshop CS6, the new version of the imageediting software that’s synonymous with image editing. Photoshop’s user interface hasn’t changed much

over the years — except to get more convoluted and inconsistent as Adobe has packed in more and more features. With CS6, it’s getting a meaningful makeover. It’s not an utter reinvention, and learning how to take advantage of the software’s nearly infinite bag of tricks still takes time. But it’s certainly a step forward. The most obvious change is the color scheme: Photoshop now has a dark color scheme made up of various shades of gray. It’s a more trendy look — Photoshop Elements already has it — and Adobe says that it helps the tools retreat into the background so you can concentrate on your image. Various elements such as dialog boxes, sliders and other controls are now more consistent, too. When Photoshop CS5 debuted in 2010, its signature new feature was probably the amazing Content Aware Fill, which can intelligently fill

in space in a photo based on what surrounds it — to extend a cloudy sky or a grassy field, for instance. In CS6, Content Aware Fill has some new companion features. Content Aware Patch, for instance, lets you specify which part of an image Photoshop should analyze when it fills in space, which is helpful when Photoshop’s first stab at doing it on its own doesn’t turn out as expected. Adobe says it has “62 percent more new features,” which sounds impressive even though I don’t know how to do that math. There are more video-editing features, and the beta has additional features for rendering 3D images that will end up as part of Photoshop CS6 Extended, a pricier premium edition. Under the hood, it uses something called the Adobe Mercury Graphics Engine to speed up performance.

ESSENTIALS A look at the Bastion Artwork

Jen Zee Digital Artist at SuperGiant Games Jen hails from beautiful sunny Seattle, which was so sunny in fact that Jen was forced inside from out of the oppressive heat and light and into cooler places like Dracula’s castle and Shadow Moses island. Like the rest of the team at Supergiant, she’s been playing games practically since she can remember, even as she honed her artistic abilities in media ranging from comics to tabletop games to massively multiplayer online games. Would you believe she was also Homecoming Queen in high school?! Neither does she, though cryptically she adds, “I’m the Goddamn Batgirl!!” So basically we try not to get on her bad side, partly out of fear that she could whip up some truly souldestroying caricatures of anyone on team. At Supergiant Games, Jen is responsible for the lush hand-painted 2D artwork that defines the distinctive look of our gameworld and all its colorful denizens.

ESSENTIALS A look at Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud For years, Adobe sold Photoshop, Illustrator and its other applications for creative pros primarily in standalone boxes — like items on an à la carte menu. In 2003, it bundled them all into a multiple-course feast it called Creative Suite; today, that’s how 75 percent of customers buy their Adobe software. Now the company is announcing an all-you-can-eat subscription service it calls Creative Cloud: $49.99 a month for ongoing access to all the Creative Suite apps and a whole lot more. It’s unveiling the new service in conjunction with Creative Suite

16

CS6, an update to the suite in its traditional form. CS6 includes an impressive new version of Photoshop plus upgrades to Illustrator, InDesign, Flash Pro, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro and other programs. It also has two new video post-production apps, Prelude and Speed Grade. Four versions of the suite are available, from Design Standard ($1299, or $299 as an upgrade) to the Master Collection. With Creative Cloud, your fifty bucks a month gets you everything in every version of Creative Suite, plus Lightroom (the cool photo management/editing program), Edge (HTML5) and Muse (code-free website building), plus Photoshop Touch and other apps for the iPad and Android. These are still conventional desktop applications, not browser-based services, but you’re entitled to download as many of them as you like at any time. A subscription also includes 20GB of online storage and

services for syncing your projects between devices and publishing them, plus the nifty Typekit service for using an array of fonts on any website, features for sharing your work and getting input on it from other creative. Is Creative Cloud worth $600 a year? It depends in part on how frequently you’d be updating your software if you bought it the old-fashioned way, and the degree to which you explore all of its offerings. You’re also buying into a vision as much as a fully-finished product: when Adobe releases the first version next month, it’s going to be missing some features.

ESSENTIALS A look at Wacom InkLing

Wacom Inkling The Inkling digital sketch pen captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper. Digital files are transferred to your computer using the Inkling Sketch Manager software, and later, exported to applications such as Photoshop速 and Illustrator速. Files can also be opened with the included Inkling Sketch Manager software to edit, delete, add layers.

i

18

In real-world use, the Inkling system works much like you would expect: touch the pen to your paper within the line of sight of the receiver, and a green light appears on the end of the pen as well as the top of the wacom receiver. So long as you’re making contact and nothing is blocking either piece, all touches are registered and recorded to the 2GB of internal memory.

You can add new layers by tapping that aforementioned button atop the receiver, and they can be separated in Photoshop or the accompanying desktop Sketch Manager software during processing. Performance-wise, I have to describe the Inkling’s output as inconsistent. I used the Inkling to record notes for the better part of a week in class, and was disappointed to see a good amount of textual distortion and the occasional missed

stroke. Simple sketches fared better, especially when relegated to central location on paper. Wacom’s listed maximum paper size is 8.27 x 11.67-inches wide, which is slightly narrower than the standard piece of notebook paper. I didn’t have issues with width, but rather the height, and noticed that sketches at the bottom of the page suffered from more missed strokes than higher up.

ALEX PARDEE

I am getting influenced by new people every day

INK - I can’t find any information on you, where should i look? AP - Through my window in a creepy manner. If that doesnt work, there is very little info about me online, but here is one recent interview for the certus report. INK - What kind of materials do you use? AP - Mostly pen and inks, some watercolors and dyes. Rarely some gouache, I’m trying to use more materials, like acrylics, oils, latex, etc. I use sumi ink for a lot of my brush-ink work.

Alex Pardee is a freelance artist, apparel designer, and a writer born in Antioch, California, USA who is best known for illustrating The Used’s album artwork.

INK - Did you go to art school? AP - No, I always wanted to but couldn’t afford it and wasn’t confident enough to get a student loan. Too scary. INK - Will you design me a tattoo? AP - Though I have done tattoo design in the past, right now I can not take any tattoo design commissions because I have taken on too many projects and I currently do not have time.

INK - Will you be mad if I get one of your images that you have already done tattooed on me? Do I need your permission? AP - Nope. You do not need my permission and I will not be mad. In fact, I will be honored, even if your tattoo artist crudely carves it in your chest with a roughed-up butter knife and some pilot ink mixed with blood. Actually, i prefer the latter. It’s tougher. If you do get anything tattooed, please send me photos i would love to see them.

INK - What about copyrighted images like album cover stuff? AP - No, you dont need permission for that either, not from me, and not from the record label, but if you did, it would be better to NOT get permission, and then dare some weird copyright cop to come carve it off of your skin. So don’t ask. Just do.

Whatever i can get my hands on for detailed stuff

i can not do it, it is most “ Iflikely due to my lack of

time, not lack of interest.

INK - Who influences you? AP - Short answer: Everyone and everything. Long answer: I guess it really depends on the time of my life I am in. I am getting influenced by new people every day, but the constant influences from the past 15 years are modern artists / illustrators that include Sam Kieth, Jon Wayshak, Robert Bowen, Dave Correia, Derek Hess, Jim Phillips, Greg Simkins, Gris Grimly, Jhonen Vasquez, Aaron Horkey, Dave Choe, Nate Van Dyke, John Pound, Berkeley Breathed, Tex Avery, Graham Ingles, Ralph Steadman, James Jean, Tomer Hanuka, and shit there’s probably more. INK - Can you design my album art for my band / clothing company? AP - For any serious inquiries, please email bunnywithmail@gmail.com . If i can not do it, it is most likely due to my lack of time, not lack of interest. I really do love you. So much, in fact, I probably need a restraining order. INK - Will you be mad if I get one of your images that you have already done tattooed on me? Do I need your permission? AP - Nope. You do not need my permission and I will not be mad. INK - Ok, final question, what is the ZeroFriends “project”? AP - Zerofriends is a group of artists, musicians, designers, etc in which i am one of the founding members. You can purchase our clothing and prints on “The ZeroFriends Store”.

Wojciech Magierski He is a graphic designer from Poland. Lives in Cracow most beautiful polish city. Hes passion is creating and designing graphic. Specializes himself on photo manipulation and illustration.

INK - When did you start this passion for design and graphics, and what did you do to take it further and turn it in to your profession? WM - I have always loved painting and drawing. My uncle is a well-known Polish sculptor, and my mother makes professional artistic jewelery, so I think I have inherited my art passion after them. When I got my first computer I used it first only for playing games. A couple years later I started creating some graphics in the Photoshop. I realized that I could replaced painting on the paper by painting in the Photoshop. It was my great hobby. After I had finished the high school, I decided to continue that and start studies combining my computers skills and my passion for art. It was a wonderful idea, because I realized that it was just what I would like to do as my proper job. Currently, I try to develop and improve my skills and I try to get better all the time. At the moment, I work for an creative agency based in Krakow and I’m happy that I do what I love.

INK - What kind of support the country gives to people who want to follow this path of design? WM - They don’t follow market needs. I know that education is very important, it is one of many factors to be successful. I know many graphics designers, who didn’t graduated any collages but achieve their goals successfully. From my point of view, if you discover your passion, talent and determination in doing that, you will be one of the best! INK - Looking at your work is obviously that you have unbelievable skills and a very creative mind, how do you define your style? WM - Thanks for nice words. I very appreciate your opinion. I have a little bit problem with defining my style. I’m still on researching a way if you know what I mean. I would like to try many things, experience them, surprise others by doing something new and fresh.

you, may be your inspiration.

INK - Where do you find inspiration to create such awesome pieces? WM - I think that everything that surrounding you, may be your inspiration. Sometimes just one detail can make that you feel yourself creative and inspired. If you are sensitive man, you can see deeply then others. I have also my favorite time to create new projects - it is time just before sleeping. Besides, I very like review abduzeedo website and the famous Daily Inspirations to meet something interesting for me.

INK - Tell us about your process of creating, how do you go from nothing to a very complex final image? WM - In the beginning, is an idea. But it is very common that during creating process most things are changed so finally effect is quite different that initial one. It attaches great importance to composition. From my point of view, it is really significant element in designing. When every element suits to others - adding some next, is quite easy. After that I looked for proper light and colours to make my project dynamic and interesting.

INK - Final question, I noticed you do a lot of collab work, how important you think that are collabs is for your work and what do you learn from these experiences? WM - If you do collab work, you can learn a lot. And it is great fun ! There were nice experiences for me. I do it with pleasure. In case of Mike Campau, I liked his CG Cover Girl. I suggest him co-operation in doing something together. He agreed and we did great project, which was awarded in one of the graphic portals.

Step 1_ Open Photoshop and

create a new document, then apply a gradient, you could fill it with a gradient or apply a Layer Style. I used the layer style, Gradient Overlay. Use Radial for the Style and #07090a.

Step 2_ Add some text in white then go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. Use 90ยบ for the Angle, and 40 pixels for the Distance.

Step 3_ Now go to Filter>Distort>Wave. use 3 for the Number of Generators, 10 and 346 for the Wavelength, and 5 and 35 for the Amplitude.

Step 4_ Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. Then group the layer and rename the folder’s Blend Mode to Color Dodge. You will get a nice light effect.

Create a new layer on top of the others and go to Filter>Render>Clouds, make sure you had black and white for the background and foreground colors, then change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge and go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. With a very soft brush, 0% hardness and black color, hide some areas of the clouds layer.

Step 5_

Step 6_ Create a new Folder on the Layers’ Palette. Change the folder’s Blend Mode to Color Dodge and add a new layer in it. Then use the Smoke Brushes from Qbrushes . Select white for the color and paint over some letters. If you think the brush is not very bright, just click twice.

Step 7_ Create a new layer beneath the other layers but in front of the Background layer. Fill this layer with black and go to Filter>Texture>Texturizer. Use 100% for the Scaling and 4 for the Relief. For the Texture use Canvas and Light use Top. That will add a nice texture to the image but you will need to change the opacity to 10%.

Conclusion_ This is a nice new feature in the new Photoshop CS5, actually there’s nothing new just the Adjustments palette, but it’s very useful because you can edit all the image adjustments like Levels, Hue & Saturation, Curves in that palette. However it just adds a Adjustment Layer, that could be done in the previous versions too. Anyway, on top of the other layers just add the Invert adjustment. You can go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Invert. You will get a very nice effect, like burning paper.

How to make the Nike Logo with Hair

So in this tutorial I will show you Here are some of the Tools how to create a funny photo needed in this tutorial: manipulation to create the Nike Hair ad. The tutorial is very sim- - Warp ple and won’t take you more - Magic Wand than 30 minutes. - Refine Edges

Step 1_ Open Photoshop and create a new document. I am using Step 2_ Once you have the Nike sym2560x1440 pixels and white background. After that get the Nike logo online. It’s pretty easy to find, just do a Google Image Search.me. You will get a very nice effect, like burning paper.

bol it’s time to use some hair photos. The one I am using is by 1809056 Ontario Ltd and it’s called long brown hair style on white. Courtesy of Shutterstock. Place the image on your document and make sure that the Nike logo is on top of it. We will use it for reference.

Step 3_ Go to Edit>Transform>Warp. Start deforming the image so you can sort of make the hair follow the nike symbol.

Step 4_ With the Magic Wand Tool (W) select the nike symbol. Then select the

layer with the hair photo and group it (Layer>Group Layers). With the group selected go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.

Step 5_ Now that you have the base for the nike hair idea you will have to make it look more real. The secret here is start adding some hair on the edges of the symbol to make it less uniform. To do that is easy. First select the hair image again and delete the white background. Use the Magic Wand Tool (W) again and select the white part. Go to Select>Refine Edges. Enable the Smart Radius and select the brush icon. Paint over the hair and then press okay. After that just delete the selection and you will have extracted the white background of the layer.

Step 7_ Start mixing some parts of the image with your logo especially the edges. The sort of tail is pretty easy (1) just add a part of the image and adjust with the warp tool again. Now the curve on the left requires more work. Notice that the edges are not perfect. So to do that just select the Brush Tool (B) with a very small and rounded brush. Then select the group with the hair and click on the mask. Now start painting on the mask with white color like as you were creating some hair.

Step 8_ Select all layers and duplicate them. After that with all the duplicated layers selected go to Layer>Merge

Layers. You can use the keyboard shortcut for that: Command(mac)/Control(pc) + Alt + Shift + E. With the new layer selected go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. Change the Blend Mode of this layer to Soft Light.

Conclusion_ Add a new layer and then with the Brush Tool (B) and black for the color paint a little shadow underneath the symbol. You can use gaussian blur to make it very soft like the image below. Just add the word Hair using Futura Condensed for the font and our funny Nike Hair image is done.

How to create Courage, The Cowardly Dog

I would say this tutorial it’s half Here are some of the Tools a case-study and half a tuto- needed in this tutorial: rial, I’m just saying that before someone may complain of the - Pen Tool fast pacing on some parts. - Gradient - Elipse Tool Anyway, If you’re used with my - Layer Overlays illustration tutorials, this will not be a big deal, please have fun.

Fugit que netur, omnimpo reperchita et, aria velignis dit vel mollaut quossin ciendis tiore. Restias maios alicit, con cuptatur rati officiis quoditae natium que endio expe voloribus, si con pa dolut pror as eum ut que nume vel mod ullorup tibusantem. Cum quodit velis dolenimillam re volorem latibus poriae vel ipis quatus molum el issumet umetur volor mod. Bus delliberis eateture volenet laboren ihillup tatiur, sequiatis aut apitatem harchil imo maximil modipsam, audam as aut mo molorem poreris imin rerovitat. Turi quas quia ipsam, officidem aut pa soluptatiame velecaborrum excerum quibus eic tem.

Step 1_ Ok, let’s begin opening Illustrator, create a 31 x 23 cm canvas. And then open the background that its on the INK dvd in the Tutorials folder.

Step 2_ So, I did a rough sketch of what I would like to obtain, the main concept was to make Courage’s shadow a frightening demon image. Also, trying to make the best use of the lightning. Create a exclusive layer for the shadows (command + L / ctrl + L). Ok, let’s start by the shadow, using the pen tool (P) start by the leg and elbow, the shadow got a refraction on the wall, that’s why it look like bend on the half. Before proceeding on the rest of the drawing, you should give attention to the hands, since as most people know, some hands can be very tricky to draw.

Step 3_ Use the pen tool (P) to create the demonic ways, it’s pretty much just like drawing triangles, don’t forget to

add a bit of perpective on it. After that, draw the sharpy teeth mouth, then select both mouth, eyes and body, go to the pathfinder panel and use the option called Minus Front. Finally, add a black to white gradient to the shadow, use the gradient tool (G) to place it correctly. Then use the Multiply blending mode to make it look like a real shadow.

Step 4_ Ok, let’s skip to the main part, first create a exclusive layer for him (command + L / ctrl + L). Start by making a circle on the belly using the ellipse tool (L). Make a circle and use the previous shape to make a clipping mask over it. Drae the tail using the pen tool (P) Use the ellipse tool (L) to create the eyeballs.

Step 5_ Let’s add Courage main colors on the shapes we already have. Then let’s start adding some fine details.

Step 6_ Ok, the tv it’s pretty simple, first let’s draw half of the body using the pen tool (P), also I drew the top of it.

Step 7_ Ok, now let’s add some flat colors on it. But in order to look like a real Tv, it should have some knobs, it’s pretty eays to create them, as you can figure out on the pics bellow.

Step 8_ Let’s go back to the shades layer and make some for the Tv, it’s quite easy, just do on the same direction of the previous one, use the pen tool (P) for this task.

Conclusion_ Now we just need a main light source, so make a big rectangle that fits all the canvas, use the gradient tool (G) to posicionate it’s focus on the lower right on the screen. Then go to the tranparency panel and use the blending mode called Overlay.
