District 59 Continental Europe Presents
DISTRICT 59 New structure and Team for 2014-15
District 59 Continental Europe
It’s all about people A First Good Step
District 59 will be a smaller District from 1 July 2014. Dynamic as before it promises to be ever more cohesive as experienced Toastmasters will be closer to each other. As a result, challenges can be faced with greater confidence. Continued success is guaranteed!
Ruxandra Balboa-PoystiI
Being smaller than the “old” D59 allows the District Core team to focus more on current clubs and geography. Clubs that will be part of D59 are mostly good clubs where Toastmasters International values and standards are applied. These clubs have a wealth of knowledge and a good support system to further help each other improve. District 59 has “powerful tools” to ensure the excellence of all clubs, so that these provide continued great value to their members.
EXECUTIVE EDITOR
Situated in Western Europe, as well as in parts of Central Europe, District 59 will have to look inwards and expand inside its boundaries.

CORE TEAM
In October 2009, he joined the Young Entrepreneurs Toastmasters, a prospect club. As VPE he helped guide this club to rank #2 in District 59 Extended DCP. He became Club President in 2011-12, reaching an even higher new goal: rank #1 – Best club in District 59. In 2012-13, he was recognised as Area Governor of the Year for achieving the following results in his area: 5 new clubs, 3 new prospect clubs; President’s Distinguished Area and Best Area in Education. In 2013-14 he was President of Taguspark Toastmasters Club and also Division L Governor with the following results to date: District 59 PR award for Toastmasters Portugal Newsletter on two occasions, 5 new clubs, 11 prospect clubs and President's Distinguished Division. At the same time, he has managed to find time to complete his Educational and Leadership tracks thus becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). “My goals as a District Officer are: 1. Replicate at District level the best practices I had the chance to apply in Portugal; 2. Motivate and help the leadership in the creation of bigger and more specialized teams; 3. Support the District to increase the effectiveness of Club Building; and 4. Act as a mentor in helping our leaders create more clubs and increase membership substantially.”
Lt. Gov. Marketing
MARCO MEIRELES
He has been a Toastmaster since 2000 and he has held various roles at different levels: Club President, Area Governor, District Governor and Revitalised Education Program Ambassador. He has set up and sponsored a new club and also helped revive a weak club. He is interested in the changing nature of Toastmasters as it adapts to a rapidly changing world in terms of technology and members' expectations. “I hope to emphasize the importance of public relations in Toastmasters at all levels of the organization. I hope to do this by connecting with Area Governors, Division Governors and Club Presidents and their respective PR Officers with a view to helping them use all the resources available to them to promote their activities in a variety of ways: websites, blogs, social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and also more traditional methods (newspaper articles, radio interviews, TV slots, flyers and posters). There are so many exciting ways that Toastmasters can be promoted in our local communities (open houses, corporate events, demo meetings) which many PR officers may not be aware of. The ultimate outcome of my role as District PRO will be an increased awareness of Toastmasters both within and outside the organization, more promotional activities and consequently more retained members, more new members and more new clubs!”

JOÃO DE MENDONÇA
“My mission as District Treasurer will be to ensure rigour, fidelity and fiduciary responsibility of district finances, as well as to architect sustainable secure cloud-based mechanisms/solutions for historical record keeping. As a Toastmaster, my medium-term goals are to complete the advanced communication and leadership levels (ACB/ACS and ALS), as well as the High Performance Leadership program. “
João has progressed through all the officer roles possible, from Sergeant-atArms to Club President, from Area to Division Governor, and from LGM to District Governor. He was always ready to try different approaches: he innovated by inviting World Champions to be keynote speakers at Toastmasters conferences in Europe, club building with small local teams, new roles in education to support clubs, amongst many other initiatives. Throughout his Toastmasters path, he has experienced many successes and a “true feeling” of belonging to a great team in Continental Europe. He is a proud D59 member. “After my term as DG, I would like to serve the new District Team as best as possible, supporting them where they feel my contribution can add value. I believe this new team is a winning team. May they fulfil their personal development and also reach district goals. I will also look for new ways to support clubs in my area and division. On a more personal level, I want to dedicate more time to my communication progress as well as coach others obtain

She joined Toastmasters in April 1998 to improve her writing, speaking and communication skills. She has held many leadership roles since then including being Area Governor for two years. She is now a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
Goals for 2014-15 “I am very happy to begin this adventure with my fellow Toastmasters in France. I am extremely motivated and have already started preparing for this role and I am really looking forward to working with the new team. As Division Governor, I will work with the Area Governors to create more clubs in each area. Our areas have 3 or 4 clubs, I believe they have to look at their long-term potential for growth. It’s huge! I expect to charter all the prospect clubs we have now and I am sure we are going to find new members to create other new clubs. I will encourage and promote a broad participation of areas and clubs in every Division activity. In every club, I would like to get more quality and more performance. I will use my experience to help, to motive and to guide the Area Governors in their mission and serve clubs and members. I will insist on the importance of all officers being trained twice in the year: through training, Area and Division Governors have the opportunity to acquire leadership.”

Division B Governor Like many I came to Toastmasters to improve my speaking - and “was lucky enough to twice win at Belgian level. Then I became fascinated by organising quality meetings. I was President of my club twice, organized three Division events and was Education Chair of the D59 Spring Conference 2013, in Antwerp. As 2013-14 Area governor, I tried to give back by mentoring and coaching others.
Goals for 2014-15 More opportunities for members: by strengthening clubs and supporting new ones; by mobilising resources at Division level; by supporting contests and activities in local languages.

Division E Governor She joined Toastmasters of Basel in 2008 and has held many club officer positions: Sergeant-at-Arms, Treasurer, VP Education and President. She was also 2013-14 Area Governor and has completed her ACG and ALB. Further, she is working on her HPL to complete her DTM. Her experience beyond club level includes: organising contests, taking on multiple roles at contests at Club, Area, Division and District level. Attending the DECM and District Council gave her deeper insights about District Business and how achievements at club level directly influences District Achievements. She is interested in “parliamentary procedure” which is crucial when holding council meetings of around 400 people.
Goals for 2014-15 “Division Goals: keep the Division sustainable and self-supportive following the TI regulations. Being a spokesperson for the Division within the District. Look into contest efficiency in a multi-lingual division and foster commitment for active participation of member of all three language communities. Personnally: further develop my TI knowledge and understanding. Learn more about parliamentary procedure. Further develop my leadership skills.
E1
Carola Rosenthal Her Toastmasters journey started in a Corporate Club in 2011 and since then she has served as Club Secretary and Club President. Officer trainings, visits to other clubs and participation in contests, allow her to meet other members in the Area/Division, which provides valuable insights beyond the Corporate Club world.
E2
“Stepping into the shoes of the Area Governor 2013-14 (Tulia Lopes) I strive to continue the great leadership that she demonstrated to support the growth, professionalism, health and diversity of the Area by working closely with the Club officers and the District leadership.”
Markus Seppala In 2007 he complained to his boss that nobody listened to him so his boss suggested he attend a Toastmasters meeting. Since then he has been a member at clubs in each city he has lived in: Brussels, Stockholm, Sydney and Basel. The Toastmasters experience has taught him to remain calm under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances, and to be brief.
E3
“My main goal is to help clubs ensure that their members have a good product week in and week out. This will result in Area E2 once again becoming Distinguished.”
Marc Hammoud He has a passion for Toastmasters. As he proudly says at meetings, “nothing comes close to the great benefit cost ratio of Toastmasters”. For an hour session, coaches in Switzerland would invoice you the equivalent of your subscription costs for 3 years with your Toastmasters club! He invites you join Toastmasters.
E4
“My goals are: (1) Help each club achieve a Distinguished Club award; (2) Encourage women to take on leadership roles so as to ensure greater diversity on committees; (3) Ensure clubs remain fun; (4) Use social media; and (5) Go digital.“
Matthias Uffer He has been President and founder of Rhetorik Club Bern. He values the opportunity to have more than one language available in Toastmasters. He is also member of Rhetorik Club Winterthur.
E5
“My mother tongues being German and French I wish to strengthen both in the Bern Area. I want to encourage people to dare to repeat the TM experience in other languages. CC in Europe certainly must be multilingual.”
Keith Westmacott He joined TM in 2005 and he is currently working on completing the manuals for his ACG. He has been a club officer since 2009. Club President of Lausanne International was one of those roles. Among his leadership activities: sponsor of a new club, numerous participations at Area Contests and mentoring many new members.
E6
“To help members overcome their lack of confidence by encouraging them to engage in taking active participation in club roles and use the manuals to perfect their speaking skills whilst having fun at the same time.”
Mateusz Bukowski He started his adventure in Toastmasters six years ago in Düsseldorf. The first Toastmaster he ever met was Dirk Löffelbein who introduced him to “Polish your Polish” club and he became hooked. At present, he is VP Education at Mosquito Hill club in Zürich. E7

F1
Georges Melides He first got acquainted with Toastmasters in southern California as a guest. “I will listen and observe actively to understand the clubs' needs and offer my support, advice, experience and training sessions to help them succeed.”
Jean-Philippe Bourgeon For two years, he has been learning communication and leadership skills in his club with the precious help of good willing fellow Toastmasters. He puts these new found skills into practice every day, whether at home or at work, which has helped him to align his behaviour with his beliefs. Becoming an Area Governor is a chance to move one step forward towards learning how to create conditions to succeed as a team. It also gives him an opportunity to spread the word to other like-minded people.
F3
“My goals are: (1) Assist clubs to grow: define their specific goals for the year with them, and help them achieve these goals; (2) Inform the Toastmasters of the Area on the upcoming changes: the new District and the new Program; (3) Promote the adoption of Easy-Speak in the Area.”
Jean Lalis He had his first Toastmasters experience in May 2010. Since then he has done his best to achieve his personal goals and those of his club as an officer. He became a CC in 2013 and a CL in 2014. During this period, he has been VPE, VP Membership and Treasurer. First he discovered “the challenge” of making speeches and later “the pleasure” of helping his fellow Toastmasters progress. “I would like to make everyone understand the benefits of the value of caring which I believe help unite us.”

Angelo Mascaro
He joined Toastmasters in September 2009, after reading about it in a book. His main goal was to overcome some difficulties in his public speaking: he had trouble at meetings, specially in the presence of hostile colleagues. Now, he not only has solved this, but he has became truly assertive and all his leadership skills have improved tremendously. After his first year, he wanted to give back to his club and become VPE... then Treasurer, then Secretary and then Club President. He is currently the VPE of the other Milan club.
Goals for 2014-15 “Be a President Distinguished Division. Form and prepare new leaders for the next mandate. Be successful in our bid to host a District Conference in 2015. Have representatives of every club participating at Area contests. Have all the clubs website on the same domain.

G2
“My goals: (1) Expand Area G1 from its current three clubs to five clubs; (2) Implement Officer Training and Area Contests; (3) Find a successor as Area Governor by the end of June 2015.“
Francesco Vecchie Like a good Italian, he fell in love... with Toastmasters on his first encounter! He first attended Toastmasters as a guest in 2006. He was immediately thrilled by Table Topics. Soon after becoming a member he wanted to give back all the support he had received - he thus began serving as a club officer. He was involved in the Italy’s incorporation process into District 59.
G3
“There are great Toastmasters out there, they just don't know it yet. My role is to make them aware of us, at least, in Italy.”
Francesco Fedele He first found Toastmasters in July 2011 and fell in love immediately. From his Ice-breaker on August 8th, 2011 to his CC on February 7th, 2012, and beyond … his Toastmasters experience has been an amazing journey.
