AJUDA HOUSE REQUALIFICATION AUTHOR JOĂƒO ESTEVES | MARIANA FERNANDES PHASE CONCEPT DESIGN LOCATION LISBON, PORTUGAL

The building is located in Ajuda, Lisbon. It’s a neighborhood inhabited by a largely aging population, and marked by the proximity of several university centers. The goal is to install a student residence in order to encourage the fixation of youth population. The facades of the existing building are retained and a new floor is added in order to homogenize the profile of the road and increase the available area. Intended to merge the new and the old but without any mimetic approach, the metric and the materiality of the ground floor was maintained by keeping windows and its stone masonry, and the new floor was covered in corten steel with protruding windows on the facade. The entrance is at the ground floor, which are privileged areas of common use - living room and kitchen. The seven rooms are distributed among the remaining floors, all of them with natural lighting and ventilation

ACILIA’S NEW AUDITORIUM AUTHOR JOAO ESTEVES | CATARINA RELVAS PHASE COMPETITION LOCATION ROME, ITALY The program at the base of the project involved the creation of a new auditorium in Acilia- Dragona, an area with a strong sense of neighborhood, and a public park adjacent to it. The park becomes a new meeting place, where the pedestrian paths converge in the building, that emerges monolithically. Its positioning angle to the existing urban fabric reinforces its status as an exception. The building is strongly marked by the vertical body, which represents an exception in the consolidated urban space. The auditorium, which can get classic performances, closing in itself, opens up towards the square, becoming a versatile and casual culture place. From a constructive point of view, the building structural system uses a mixed reinforced concrete and metal profiles and is coated with concrete, which contrasts with the white murolux.

LA DUANA MALL AUTHOR VVM ARQUITECTOS PHASE CONCEPT DESIGN LOCATION SALOU, SPAIN

The ptoject for the new La Duana mall is part of a large plan to restructure the commercial axis in Salou - a coastal town near Barcelona. The building emerge in a street corner of a consolidated block. A massive volume with a large window is projected from the main faรงade, marking the entrance to the shopping center. Thus allowing an overlooking view above the green park and the beach. La Aduna mall has four floors above ground plus 3 floors below. The shops are arranged around a large atrium ripping the entire building and is finished at the top by a large skylight. In rooftop we find a terrace that supports the food court, allowing once again to enjoy a view over the beach and the sea.

CONNECTING STOCKHOLM AUTHOR URBAN NOUVEAU PHASE CONCEPT DESIGN LOCATION STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Old Lidingöbron is a 750 meters long railway bridge in steel built in 1925, linking Ropsten to Lidingö, with space also for pedestrians and bicycles. Nowadays, with the Stockholm City tramway extended to Ropsten and the existing car bridge, the use of the old bridge needs to be rethought. Instead of demolishing the existing bridge, the project proposes build several apartments, in a linear axis, inside the steel structure. On the bridge deck, it’s proposed a public park like the High Line in New York. The apartments, can be reached by foot or by bicycle and the individual entrances from the bridge deck by stairs or elevator. All apartments tailored to each family’s lifestyle. Residents will enjoy views of the water and you can even fish from the private balcony. Old Lidingöbron becomes a social link between the new residential Stockholm Royal Seaport and Torsvik on Lidingö. The bridge with its housing becomes an architectural symbol of the communication and balance between the new and old.

24 POST OFFICE STORE AUTHOR S3ARQUITECTOS PHASE CONCEPT, DEVELOPMENT, TECHNICAL DESIGN LOCATION LISBON, PORTUGAL This is a project for a 24hours post station. With a big show window in the storefront, the inner space is shaped by a spiral warped wall with some strategically openings subtracted to accommodate multitouch screens for interactive communications, products showcases or 24h selling machines. Built in wood products and recycled cardboard panels, the wall receives a finishing coat on recycled paper for printing of large formats which constitutes communication support for campaigns or seasonal decorations. The floor, a polished white marble, gives a solid stereotomic base, to a space shaped by an organic wall. An oval ceiling dome illuminates the entire store, by reflecting the color and light from a LED RGB system, that is projected from the tops of the wall.

EXTENSION OF THE ATALAIA HOUSE AUTHOR S3ARQUITECTOS PHASE CONCEPT, DEVELOPMENT, TECHNICAL DESIGN LOCATION ALBUFEIRA, PORTUGAL A detached villa built three decades ago and characterized by its contemporary lines and traditional essence, was left to near abandonment during the last few years. This is the starting point for the intervention in this habitation. Taking as an advantage the local topography, solar exposition and privileged views, it`s the main intention to adjust the existing house to new necessities and comfort of the present, through the construction of two new volumes for the suite and kitchen, preserving exteriorly the existing trees. The house organization through the central functional existing axis culminates with the new suite volume, and a direct connection to the garden area and exterior parking, created in the height difference between the new volume and the existing natural terrain.

GREEN URBAN ‘LINK’ TYPE URBAN LOCATION LISBON, PORTUGAL YEAR 2009

A city’s urban life is proportional to its own capacity to support a variety of urban events, as well as originate its own functional uses. However, in this particular case, and due to the established borders of the intervention site, it is perceptible that this is an area of great contrasts, a hinge that links two very different sections of the urban mesh. The core concept for the sensitive and morphological design of this stretch of terrain is the “SQUARE” theme. This subject immediately refers to an idea of centrality – meaning Centre VS Suburbs – regardless the square’s use or typology. So, in what way does an urban void, generating centralities and peripheries, relating itself with its limits and pre-existences, develops into a new type of city that doesn’t become obsolete and institute a blending process for building these same cities? The proposed design establishes a negative “totem-like” scenery that constitutes a topographic and morphologic reference for the remnant plan. It is the built origin for the Green Corridor that links the city center with Monsanto Park.

CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY CULTURE TYPE CULTURAL LOCATION LISBON, PORTUGAL YEAR 2009

The contemporary city characterizes itself for its high levels of soil occupation, as well as for its complex urban density. In this city, where the land is scarce and the infra-structures, such as roads, highways, bridges, viaducts and railroad lines, represent an enormous barrier to the urban expansion, it is important to think about the future city and its potential to embrace multiple use layers. With that in mind, it’s proposed the materialization of a center for contemporary culture around a public square. This square, surrounded by the museum, it’s not only decreased in height, as it extends itself into the Monsanto park, grabbing the pillars of the highway, and going underneath the building itself. By being so, the square acquires a roof, as well as originates an urban park, enhancing the expectant area under the viaduct.

MULTISPORT CENTER TYPE SPORT LOCATION RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL YEAR 2008

In urban terms, Santa Teresa’s neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, is characterized by its buildings accentuated degradation, together with the scarcity of equipments that meet communities social and cultural needs. Geographically, Santa Teresa has an open view to the historical city of Rio de Janeiro, just like a belvedere, because it’s located on a high position. The intervention strategy in the neighborhood began by requalifying housing, as well as strengthening the collective equipments, in order to ensure the primary needs of the inhabitants of the neighborhood. The sports complex that is proposed has a pool, a gymnasium, an outdoor field and monitoring structures to practice sports.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES CENTER TYPE CULTURAL LOCATION LISBON, PORTUGAL YEAR 2007

“…[the urban voids] are expectant spaces, but abandoned for most of the times, more or less delimited on the heart of the “traditional city” or uncharacterized on its outskirts. These voids are areas of “non-city”, absent spaces, ignored or fallen into disuse, alienated from any system of spatial planning.” IN 2007 Lisbon Trienal The navel/nucleus of creative industries includes, on one hand, the construction of several workshops which will help the production of creative activities, such as design, fashion, architecture, visual arts or even theatre; on the other hand, it contemplates a series of equipments which are going to support these investigation works, such as a specialized library, an art gallery and an auditorium for 200 people.
