Introduction: What is Internet? Every day millions of people exchange information through the Internet - but what exactly is the Internet? The Internet is a worldwide collection of computer networks, cooperating with each other to exchange information using common standards. Through telephone wires, fiber optic cables, wireless transmissions and satellite links, Internet users can exchange information in a variety of forms. The Internet is a network of networks that connects users in every country in the world. There are currently over one billion Internet users worldwide. Up to now the networks we have discussed have been controlled by one individual or organization. The Internet is a conglomerate of networks and is owned by no one individual or group. There are, however, several major International organizations that help manage the Internet so that everyone uses the same rules.

ISP

Any home, business or organization that wants to connect to the Internet must use an Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP is a company that provides the connections and support to access the Internet. It can also provide additional services such as Email and web hosting. ISPs are essential to gaining access to the Internet. No one gets on the Internet without a host computer, and no one gets on the Internet without going through an ISP. ISPs range in size from small to very large and differ in terms of the area they service. ISPs may provide limited services to a small geographical area or can have a wide variety of services and support entire countries with millions of customers. ISPs also differ in the types of connection technologies and speeds they offer. Examples of well known ISPs include Clix, Sapo, Net Cabo, etc….

Do you have Internet access? Who is your ISP? There are mainly two ways of connecting to the internet as we shown in this picture:

The first one we have host Roberto directly connected to an ISP by a cable modem. The second way the three pc`s are connected to an integrated router, (we call that a local networking area), and obviously connected to a modem to get to the ISP to provide the internet. So this is simply how we are connected to the World Wide Web, now we will see how this changed our life: We can have internet by cable, Wireless, Bluetooth, fiber optic and satellite. Obviously we can have internet anytime, anywhere and anyplace and we can do the following things and be part of some spectaculars activities.

Teleworking: Both the employer and the employee benefit from Teleworking. Employees save time and money, and reduce stress, by eliminating the daily travel to and from the office. Employees can dress casually at home, therefore saving money on business attire. Working from home allows employees to spend more time with their families. Reduced travel for employees also has a very favorable effect on the environment. Less airplane and automobile traffic means less pollution. Teleworkers need to be self-directed and disciplined. Some Teleworkers miss the social environment of an office setting and find it difficult to work in physical isolation. Not all jobs can take advantage of Teleworking. Some positions require a physical presence in the office during a set period of time. However, more enterprises are taking advantage of technology to increase the frequency of telecommuting. The idea was has became popular in United States of America about one thousand and nine hundred ninety by Federal Pollution-reduction regulations. Studies at that time show an increase in home teleworking productivity of 15% more or less. However this evolves some sensitive problems like: not all employees are well suited to working from home; another important concern is to protect company confidential information and the lack of technical support, loss of promo ability due to lack of visibility. But the number of Teleworker are been increasing a lot, most of all part-time Teleworkers. Some Teleworkers think they will be able to work and take care of the children, saving money in day care.

Online Education The Online Education has been increasing in this couple of years in all over the world include of course Portugal. For example we can take many courses funded or not by this way, like take the Certificate of competence occupational to give classes in some competences. The trend is reaching the high school level as well. The goal is people take virtual classes in pursuit of graduate and undergraduate degrees in fields such as engineering, business, technology, etc. E-learning and B-learning are some kind of platform of teaching online. In another level we have languages courses, web design courses, all kind of small time certifications about almost anything. One hundred hours lessons courses to learn the essential about some fields. Maybe the greatest benefit of online education is the flexibility it provides, as long as students have access to a computer and the internet, they can take courses from anywhere in the world. This is a great opportunity for people who live in rural areas with little access to those educational facilities. Thanks to e-mail, messenger and discussion forums students can interact with teachers and colleges in real time environment. Everyone can benefit from flexibility of online learning.

Love on the wire (It could be on the air …) It may be strange but for many people it`s the only way they can express their felling and start to live a life without being alone. But there are several risks of looking for love in the internet. Our heart has its reasons but also has its places. Romance is booming online. We hear a voice for the other corner of the world calling for Cyberspace…. And we are attempted to flirt … at this time thousands are flirting, courting and most of them cheating, lying….. There is a hunting out there on the air, making promises that they can`t comply. There are naive people who talk with psychopaths, sick people right now and they don`t know they are speaking with the beast… But there are also many people who found real love in internet as well and got married, rising kids and live very happy days. There really is another person in the other place of the line and can move us emotionally and sexually, we can fall in love via modem…. For women it is intense intimacy and quick and they have time to chose better and make them happy. For men they must do something that they don`t do a lot; Communication. We must communicate to be online, but sometimes that communications are not truly and honest People fake, they make believe that are someone else better than reality. It is because of this than rarely cyber love live up to the mental image and don`t last for too long.

E-Commerce It`s a combination of traditional business and automatization brought by internet that allow enterprises to exchange information or data about sales, execute financial transactions in an automatized way and under a safe and innovator communication protocol. Seeing this way, every potential world buyers could be present. There are two types of e-commerce: One type of-commerce is doing business between a distribution enterprise and the final client. The other type of e-commerce is doing business with two partners’ enterprises and most part of the time none of them is the final client. Allow partners to be closer of each other and the necessary information to execute the business is always available. Soon the final client realizes that they have twenty four hours a day safety and trustable service. Clients can buy directly and with accessible prices, can also save money by not leaving their home. Can evaluate in a small piece of time what market has to offer and have a plenty of time to do that. Can buy faster and without presser or burocratic associated. Makes possible the access the one new marketplaces aged one minimum strain financial. Lower the time delivers of the orders.

Parent Control Parental Control software it's something like a firewall, it is a computer control utility that enables parents to block access to undesirable web sites or specific sites. It also allows to automatically cancel unsolicited Internet Explorer Windows, pop ups and pop undress, filter banner ads to speed up page viewing and downloading. Some Parent Control software also monitors keystrokes and Web sites visited as block credit card transactions and protect your Internet privacy. There are some ways which parental control can block sites or their contents:  They check requested URLs against a list of blocked sites previously chosen by the user, which is automatically updated.  The software checks the text on the site for banned words. If it finds blocks the site's content, if not allow the user to view the website content.  The software then checks the site looking for unnapropriated images.

Considering that a home might have children of different ages, many parental controls allow for the user accounts to be created. Each account can have different kind of settings, depending on the age. We can set the security level to maximum for children about 8-year old, but reduce the setting for young 15-year old. However, there is software that still can’t clearly distinguished adult content. Some innocent content could get blocked because of the expression, for example "breast cancer" could be blocked because of the word "breast" could be confused with some explicit content.

SPAM/SPYWARE/WORMS The evolution internet had over the years wasn’t all advantages, as to most things in life internet has it downside too; spam, spyware and worms are example of that. Spam is the universal designation of unsolicited e-mails usually of commercial content, normally it’s sent to hundreds, even thousands of emails at the same time. The person that sends spam is called a spammer. This sort of emails is an advantage in an economic way because there no cost to the spammer, so it functions kind of like a way of free advertising, and usually with no problems to the spammer because its difficult hold him account for the mass emailing. Spyware is a software that install on a computer and retrieves information about the user and His internet habits, that information is delivered to a third partied, usually the user doesn’t know that a spyware is running on the computer. The worst type of spyware can steal personal information’s and can contribute to an entire network being taken over. The way to stop spyware is to have an updated antivirus, a firewall and a good anti-spyware software whisk can detect and remove any spyware installed on the computer. Worms is a software similar to a virus, however the virus infests a program and needs that same program to spread, if the program is uninstalled the virus is also eliminated, the worm doesn’t need program to spread through the computer . The worm can be projected to take malicious actions after infesting the computer, it can self replicate and eliminate computer files, that way the worm can make the infected computer venerable to other attacks and cause network damage only by self-replicating itself.
