I'm a Brazilian-born Architect and Researcher recently graduated from Syracuse University's School of Architecture. On top of my Bachelor of Architecture, I have also completed a Minor in Geography at Syracuse's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. At Syracuse University I spent a semester abroad in New York City, where I learned about Urban Systems and Problems, and first engaged with Real Estate Development from a theoretical perspective to a full project development and financial analysis. My undergraduate thesis looks at the typology of the data center and how one might start to redefine what these environmentally detrimental, yet inevitable, black boxes can be, to create new productive ecologies. A cartographic analysis of the landscape leads to cross-programing opportunities that ultimately assist in the development of the territory. linkedin.com/in/jelleryl/ issuu.com/joaopedroelleryoliveira www.instagram.com/ellery_arch/

Animal/Plant Habitat Data Center Education Infrastructure
PROJECT STATEMENT This project therefore proposes fourth nature as a data infrastructure that provides affected communities with tools and frameworks to start bridging the digital gap by building new productive ecologies. In a post-covid-19 context, a data center typology is here re-imagined as a system of support machinery/infrastructure that assists socio-economic, environmental, and technological recovery. To envision this new typology as a catalyst for recovery, the project ultimately examines data across scales with the goal of understanding global connectivity and its relation to a territory. Using and converting GIS data to construct maps, diagrams and drawings of the territory will reveal opportunities for location and cross-programming. The process and predicament (consumer needs, degradation of land and ecosystems) of the local artisanal and agricultural industries will inform the social and environmental potential of the "data center". PROJECT STATEMENT Zipcode 90008, Crenshaw is an unapologetically black community that is also known as the heart of African American Commerce in LA. Filmed in Crenshaw, John Singelton’s oscar-nominated film Boyz n the Hood released in 1991, illuminated how life in the ghetto had been cheapened by a toxic cocktail of racism, poverty, violence, and substance abuse while also emphasizing the insidious threat of gentrification to the community. Today in 2020, Crenshaw and Black people all over America continue to face systemic racism and marginalization and as a result, black communities continue to suffer immensely. The lack of change and support from the American government, institutions, and wealthy, prove that the elite of our country still “ don’t know, don’t show, or don’t care about what’s going on in the hood.” Our project aims to become an exuberant and indelible canvas for the projection of black culture, joy, and pride for the community of Crenshaw. Equipt with a data center, education center, and low-cost residential living, this project aspires to provide an energy to the community that will empower its residents and youth. PROJECT STATEMENT This project explores structural, material, and building systems tectonics in the context of a church's community center in south side Syracuse, NY. The main intention is to pay homage to the Bishop Robert Winston by connecting his Jamaican heritage with his life in Syracuse. We do so by investigating different techniques of winterizing tropical design motifs and materials to suit the climate and environment in Syracuse. In order to preserve privacy and noise pollution in the neighbourhood, the building is buried underground. Large concrete shells span across the site enclosing the gym spaces. While the structure aims to articulate the extension of program to the site below, it also references Jamaican modern architecture seen in the National Stadium in Kingston (1962). We focused on the local materials which are used in the architecture of both Jamaica and Syracuse and separated them based on programmatic function, in this case stone and concrete for larger public spaces, and wood for more private and intimate spaces. Affordable Housing Community Space Cultural Facilities Retail
PROJECT STATEMENT
Weaving homes combines the housing needs of NYC with the retail and service needs of Mott Haven, Bronx. Located in what is currently a police tow-pound, our project will be sharing the lot with the new Bronx-based prison. Weaving Homes is divided into 3 spines, separating the housing units from the different public spaces and social services. The residences are found across 10 floors on the street-facing spine. Housing units are found between the weaving circulation that provides spaces for unexpected interactions with neighbours. These spaces are meant to be appropriated by the residents and used to engage with other neighbours to foster a close-knit community. When selecting an apartment, residents are given a catalog of three initial floor plans to choose from. These plans have different areas, to best serve different household sizes, however all units include an exterior space in which they can progressively expand into. The goal is that with time, property owners will have the agency to build additional rooms and incrementally expand their apartments into the exterior space, and through that process add value to their properties. The adaptable furniture given in the initial units allows for residents to be the agents of their home and offers the possibility to change or customize the program of each room.

Affordable Housing
PROJECT STATEMENT VERTIGO is a rooftop intervention aiming to further connect communities through a multipurpose housing and commercial project. Targeted for students and local residents, VERTIGO connects students of all ages and backgrounds in a mega-structure hovering over an existing residential block in the Financial District of New York City. This project was approached through an indepth analysis of shared housing (Airbnb) and the manner in which spatial agents and arrangements were used and designed to achieve different qualities. From working with these agents, the research then looked at the urban fabric of New York City and investigated unused urban spaces and different ways those spaces could be explored. Upon combining the Airbnb spatial analysis with the unused urban spaces, the city of NY was then seen through the lenses of demographics, zoning, surrounding program, and building codes. Ultimately these analyses lead to VERTIGO, a public and residential extension of a contextualized block into a hovering mega-structure.

The following work displays final renderings for a freelance project worked on with MARINA FONTANA. This work was designed by Marina and drafted, 3d modeled and rendered by myself. We completed the work from two different continents (South America and North America) throughout the Fall semester. The project focuses on the workflow from the drawing board, through CAD, into modeling rendering softwares. I drafted the plans, sections, and elevations on AutoCAD, 3d modeled them on Rhino 3D, then proceed to add materiality, lighting, furniture, vegetation, and background elements on Lumion. The project itself is a single family home in Brasilia and the client requested the redesign of the facade, childrens' bedrooms, and backyard pool area.

I designed the proposal for the International Labour Organization's (ILO) new headquarters for the Mexico and Cuba offices, located in Mexico City. The proposed plan was attached to the bidding notice sent by the ILO to contractors and architects. The process started with sketching alongside the office director and drafting the building's existing condition. I conducted a few visits to the office tower with the director, contractor, and local architect. From my submitted plans and project, the local architect then adapted the proposal to more strictly abide by Mexican building codes and standards. Some other changes were also made to follow the United Nation's covid-19 office protocols. The construction began in the Summer of 2021 and the grand opening will be on July 12th of 2022 with the presence of the ILO's general director.

The process started with Revit modelling and drawing of the existing house based on photos received from the homeowners. The model consists of different wall compositions and thicknesses for the different portions of the house.

Currently, I'm building the site and working on the overall redesign of the home. A second floor is being added, which will change the structural logic of the ground floor, something that is being discussed with local contractors.
