PATTERNS OF PLACE
STREET VENDORS Temporary vendors along the streets provide useful services to the pedestrians. This makes people to spend more time on the streets. Moreover, vendors also have useful information for the tourists regarding places to visit nearby or stories that might amuse the visitors. They are commonly found on streets outside galleries, heritage structures and event spaces that naturally attract tourists and visitors. They are not only providing services but are the eyes and ears to tourists and locals, with a tale or two to tell and amuse costumers. Vendors cleverly station themselves in culture rich and tourist friendly environments usually streets leading up to galleries, monuments and event spaces.
FOOTBALL FANS The site has a history of being used for public gatherings during colonial rule. In current times, this piece of land is fenced and locked up. However, this does not stop the local football enthusiasts to visit the pitch for a game or two. Most of these players are accompanied by clusters of friends to cheer them on from outside the fence.

OPEN AIR THEATRE Open air theatres in Kochi are a vital part of community living. They bring together people of various age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. Also, many of these events attract locals and tourist passing by. This in turn helps enrich the life on the streets, such as the vendors and local businesses. These Open airs become a hub to learn, experience and spread awareness about the local culture and heritage.
BEACH PATHWAY The beachside walk is a simple pleasure of nature in Fort Kochi. Inviting visitors to enjoy the sunset and then direct them towards the different landmarks and streets of the culture rich area. Along the beachside path, the individual is exposed to a multitude of activities and practices. These include the art and craft on display at the beach, take in the view with the surrounding sounds and to engage with local fishermen. These local fishermen showcase an ancient fishing technique using Chinese fishing nets

CONTEXTUAL SITE APPROACH
SUBDIVIDING SITE The site was subdivided into smaller parts by connecting adjacent streets through the site. This allowed more opportunities for visual and physical connections through the site, giving rise to more than one entrance into the site. Additionally, this approach increased the site edges for public access.
PUBLIC SQUARE The site has a history of being used for parades and community gatherings during colonial rule. The land is now abandoned, fenced and locked after the colonial rule ended. However, local kids often find a way to enter into the site and use the land as a football ground. Hence, to preserve the key characteristic feature of the site, the green square can be used for the following purposes; -A place for public gathering during festivals, biennale, competitions, opens air theatre events, and carnivals. -Rest of the year, the land can be used for games and sports for the local community, which attracts spectators to gather around the square and contribute to the street life.

COURTYARD AND TREES The lush foliage of trees lined along the edges are maintained well to preserve the unique identity of the streets of Fort Kochi. These trees reduce the heat island effect and reduce the temperature for pedestrians to enjoy a cooler stroll through the streets. Multiple courtyards, enclosed within the built environment serve as transitional spaces for visitors moving through the different galleries. A microclimate is created in the courtyards, where the trees and built spaces act as a blanket from harsh sunlight and filters for light breezes. The courtyards become extensions to the workshop and gallery spaces, as artists can showcase their craft design processes and finished pieces of art here.
CONNECTING PROGRAMS The Heritage Portuguese Church and art gallery are well known attractions around the site. Views are oriented from these spaces providing a directed visual cue towards activities on the site. This helps visitors to navigate around easily.

Welcoming views from the street leads one into the heart of the site, allowing pedestrians to observe the activities taking place here. These open spaces are open for public access and can be used by local craftsmen to work and sell their handicrafts. Visitors have the chance to engage and interact with the craftsmen first hand to learn and understand the craftsman’s skills. This is a strong feature in raising awareness and appreciation for the traditional arts and crafts.

The ground plane is made active with workshop activities, art and craft exhibits, boutiques and eateries. These spaces transform into vessels for cultural exchange and dialogue between national and international artists and creative. These interactions are further conveyed and expressed to the general public. For such activities to be harnessed the upper floor accommodates design studios, apartments for artists, administration office and workshop spaces.

Gold Coast. A coastal city that developed from beach side shacks to Australia’s sixth largest city in less than 50 years. This project was an attempt to re-think the in-between spaces that could contribute positively to the civic needs of the city. Located in Palm Beach, it currently functions as a car parking lot. Since this site is in close proximity to the beach, it hosts restaurants and cafes. This has always attracted pedestrians to use the site as a short cut to get around. When standing in this prime location, one has vistas spanning the natural topography. The beach to the east and hinterlands to the western side. The brief required a list of spaces to be incorporated which would further tap into the potential of the site. These spaces included a Library, cultural centre, art gallery, collaborative studios, live-work spaces and a music venue.
As a group activity, the master plan was assigned followed by individual design process with a focus on a single building. The master plan had an aim to be designed in a way to strengthen the north to south and east to west connections. This would allow pedestrians to continue using the short cut but also engage in activities on the ground floor. The cafes and retail spaces on the ground floor activate the edges of the site, the well protected courtyard creates a microclimate by blocking out the strong winds and harsh western sun. This draws people to come and enjoy the space.

This building was designed to accommodate library spaces, Art gallery, cultural collection, media theatre, meeting rooms and admin offices while enforcing the ground plane connection with cafes and public seating. The bustling street edge is a consequence to the cafes and seating spaces that allow for spectacular views to the courtyard. The spaces on the first and second floors are cocooned to have a sense of security and privacy but at the same time allows for a visual connect to the street from the windows, balcony and terrace. The library, cultural centre, art gallery, a mediatheque, theatre, café and the open terrace are vertically layered to bring together different activities into one built body. A common staircase in the ground floor courtyard allows independent access to all of these various programs. The wellventilated staircase lures users to choose the stairs over the elevator as they can rest their eyes on scenic views of the beach.

The spit is located north of main beach and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and recreation. Sea world was one of the first tourist destinations that brought visitors into the spit. The sheltered water also attracted increasing number of private boats and jet ski owners. This University project was an exploration of different options to design floating structures that would draw more people towards the spit. Floating architecture can be affordable and still closer to the city without exploiting land resources.
The master plan was a collaborative exercise involving the whole class. The programs were decided to provide shelter, produce food, conduct aquatic research and to provide useful services to support needs of the community. My focus was to design a residential floating structure that has the ability to adapt to the climate and be affordable.

The residential component was designed to be spatially efficient and become affordable for students to rent. Since floating structures can easily move around, the house was designed to be rotated around an axis. This makes it possible for the occupants to orient the building to suit the weather conditions. The common areas like dining room and shared terrace could connect or disconnect with the neighbour’s houses which adds more space to the house as well as allows better interactions with neighbours. This project was designed with the aim of providing affordable housing that is flexible to accommodate users in smaller areas without losing out on a spacious feel. This was achieved by introducing shared spaces that are managed by the users to also have an improved quality of space.
Closed Configuration The dining room and outdoor balcony joins to form a common area with the neighbours. This configuration is ideal for protection from wind and the western sun and also has the scope to accommodate a larger dining area.
Open Configuration The upper terraces join to form a shared terrace. This configuration allows the warm sun light to penetrate the house and keep it warm during winter.

I was given the opportunity to participate in this renovation project, while interning at Büro Two Architecture. The site is located in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, with Mount Warning towards the North West and the Tweed River running along the northwest boundary. Situated on the site is an old workers cottage. Existing site conditions The original cottage’s structural elements were still strong and had no signs of any damage. The interior walls are single skin timber construction and the exterior has weather board cladding. The client had shared desires of converting this two-bedroom cottage into a four bedroom home with larger living, dining and kitchen areas.

The new addition on the North West side consists of the living, dining and kitchen areas. The open floor plan offers undisturbed views to the north and also maximises northern sunlight entering into the house. An outdoor deck utilises the northern light as well as provides protection from the western sun. The additions to the house weaved seamlessly with the original space and did not dominate the proportions of the cottage. It was vital to preserve the character off the cottage.
