ragged around the edges: Keeping Your Clothes Looking Their Best
Dressing your best is part of any good career strategy. Working as a professional is more than just putting in the hours and using your talents to achieve the organization’s goals: dressing like a professional is also a sign that you take your position seriously and should be treated with respect. If you’ve taken the first steps, buying good-quality, tailored suits, selecting the right shirts and ties and buying the best shoes you can afford, then you’re on the right track. The problem, though, is keeping up the professional look. It’s not just a matter of taking suits to the cleaners once in a while and getting a shoe shine when you remember; a loose thread, a missing button or a frayed tie can undo everything you’ve invested in. It’s hard to be taken seriously when you look ragged around the edges. TAKING INVENTORY Unless your salary is well into six figures, it’s unlikely that you can afford to replace your entire wardrobe every few months. More likely, especially if you’re in the early years in your career, you have three or four good business suits, a dozen or 15 dress shirts, about two dozen ties and three, perhaps four, pairs of good quality dress shoes. That means that you are cycling through your entire wardrobe every two weeks or so and that means that you’re placing a lot of wear on each and every article of clothing. You have to establish a program of routine inspection and maintenance to keep them looking their best - which makes you look your best. Think of it as looking out for what you’ve invested in your clothes, and your career. THE WEEKLY INSPECTION Establish a simple routine: Every week, set aside a half hour or an hour to go over the clothes that you will be wearing during the coming week. This may sound like a lot of trouble, but it’s the most effective, efficient and easiest way of making sure that your professional wardrobe looks its best. It’s certainly better than trying to make sure that everything is ready when you’re trying to grab some breakfast before rushing out the door the first thing in the morning. Instead, set aside some time - Sunday afternoon, perhaps when you can do the task properly. Take all the clothing you’re likely to wear in the coming week out of the closet and dresser drawers. Hook the suits, on their hangers, on the closet doorknob and lay out the other clothing on the bed: shirts, ties, shoes, belts, even underwear. Now, you’re ready to begin. FIT Vol. 20suit Issue 994 Does each still fit? When you button the - Julyhave 3, 2015to suck in your stomach? jacket, June do 26 you
54
Are the shirt collars a little too snug? Or, if you’ve been working out lately, are the shoulders getting a little too tight? When you put on your trousers, can you fit two fingers between the waist button and your stomach? Too much room and the trousers sag; too little and the cloth pulls, exposing the front zipper. If you have any doubts about the fit of a suit, take it to a good tailor and have it adjusted. Retire dress shirts and get ones that are the right size - the real size, not the wantto-be size. CUFFS AND COLLARS It used to be, a century ago, that men’s cuffs and collars were detachable. That’s because they knew that was where the first signs of wear were going to occur and they could be easily replaced. Today, of course, shirts are made in a single piece, which means that you have to make sure that the cuffs and the collars are not frayed or even visibly worn down from the friction of daily wear. At the first sign of fraying, retire the shirt immediately. Don’t forget to check the suits as well: Jacket and trouser cuffs can become frayed, too, but a tailor may be able to do something to extend their lives. Next to ill-fitting clothing, frayed and worn clothing is the worst image you want to project. Cull your wardrobe brutally. BUTTONS If you’ve ever worn a shirt or suit knowing that it was missing a button, you should give a crisp, new $20 bill to the next street person you see because that will soon be you if you don’t clean up your act. Not only should every single button be in place, but they should all be snugly in place. If there’s a button hanging loose on a suit, immediately take a pair of scissors, cut it off, put the button in the article’s pocket and take it to your tailor to be professionally re-sewn: t hat suit is out of action until the button is taken care of. Loose or missing buttons on a dress shirt? That depends: If it’s an expensive shirt, have your cleaner (you do have a professional cleaner you use regularly, don’t you?) sew it back on. Otherwise, the shirt gets retired and a new one goes on the purchase list. Sometimes, a thread end from a sewn button will come loose and become visible; take a pair of sharp nail scissors and carefully trim the loose end off, but keep an eye on that button in case it decides to go rogue on you later on. As long as you have the scissors out, look for any loose threads hanging from any seams on shirts, suit jackets and trousers. Do not pull threads! Cut them close to the seam. HOLES So you have a hole in your undershirt, so what? Maybe that sock is looking pretty thin in the toes - what does it matter? It’s all hidden, right? Well, yes, right up to the time when you’re working late, take off your tie and loosen your collar... and
the boss stops by your office. Fate will ensure that the hole in your undershirt will be showing. Or you’re going through airport security with a colleague and your big toe pops out when you take off your shoes. Underwear and socks are consumables; replace them at the first sign of wear. As for the hole in the lining of your favorite suit, be assured that it’s not going to heal itself. Get the lining repaired or replaced, otherwise find another, new favorite suit. STAINS Of course, you always keep one of those stain sticks in your suit jacket, in case you spill something on yourself at a restaurant or party. Of course you do. There are other kinds of stains, though, that are likely to sneak up on you. Watch out for stains on the edge of shirt collars, particularly on the back of the collar. They come from your skin oils, perspiration and groundin soil transferring from your skin; it becomes ground into the cloth over time and just can’t be washed out entirely. You can’t necessarily see it when you have the shirt on, but others can, even when you’re wearing your suit jacket. Stains under the arms are less likely to be from perspiration than from antiperspirants. If you even think, “Is that a stain?” when you raise your arms, then you should retire the shirt. Keep
that in mind the next time you take off your suit coat at work. L EATHER Shoes and belts get a special kind of wear and deserve a careful going-over every week. Don’t worry about the shine on your shoes; we’ll assume that you have that well in hand. Instead, look at the soles: Can you see a darker ring in the sole, just forward of the arch? That means that the sole is wearing through. Is the edge of the sole the same width all the way around? Are the uppers still firmly stitched to the soles? Any sign of wear on the heels? Run the length of each of your belts between your thumb and forefinger. Are there any signs of cracking? Creases? Is the hole you normally use on your belt showing signs of stretching? Good quality leather goods, both shoes and belts, are worth the extra care and the occasional visit to the shop for repair and refurbishment. The first few times you follow this regimen will probably be a little discouraging - and expensive. After a while, though, as you work through the flaws in your business wardrobe, you will begin to gain a confidence that you look your very best at work. Then, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is getting that quarterly report in on time.

Q: I quit my job and moved to Houston with my family three weeks ago, but I’m having a hard time finding something. I heard there are lots of jobs here and thought I would have something immediately. I’m from a smaller place and really haven’t even had to send a resume before because everyone knew me. Why does everyone say there are so many jobs here? -Houston, Texas Reader
A: I believe they say it because there are so many jobs here. If you’re just looking for “something,” you’ll have more trouble. Your search has to be targeted to exactly the position for which you are qualified. If you are sending out resumes shotgun style, you will be frustrated because employers are looking for exact fits for their positions. You are doing a good job of being proactive. I hope you find a job that you love.
A: I’m not sure why you want to stiff the agency since they are the ones that introduced you to the company and the job. Remember that the company had the opportunity to keep you when you worked there. Ethically, the company would not be able to hire you without paying a finder’s fee. 50?
Tips to Land a Better Job by Robin Ryan, Author of Over 40 & You’re Hired!
You read so much bad news about anyone who’s a mature worker that you might think your best years are behind you if you are over 50 — WRONG! I’ve recently worked with several career counseling clients who are past 49 and each has had a BIG career success. Hope – and self confidence, plus some savvy know-how – seems to be the key. Tom is an engineer in his mid 50s – a tough job title to maintain on a permanent basis, since most employers thirst for young (and cheaper employees) for these jobs. He’d been working for Boeing for over 20 years and he was getting laid off. He had not looked for a job in years. He created a new targeted resume listing his accomplishments. He learned the best ways to look for a job by searching out companies he’d like to be employed by. He then checked their web listings and networked to make connections. We role played to focus and improve his interview skills. The new job brought a nice salary increase and a $15,000 signing bonus. Cathy had been a stay-at-home mom for years, but when her husband lost his job the family needed both parents to job hunt. At first she was scared, as she’d been out of the workforce so long. We worked on identifying a good field for her to enter and also looked for part-time opportunities. She used the new job search techniques and networking skills to land an interview and from there she got a new job. No one was more amazed than her husband – he didn’t think she had a chance.
Executives have struggled with finding positions. Fewer opportunities have made the search tough. Yet many have landed new jobs and prospered. Mike left behind a prominent career as his industry fell apart. He recently landed a VP Sales position in a totally new field.
