TREND FORECASTING This was a live brief conducted in my second year of university with the trend forecasting agency Trend Bible. Working with their predicted trends for Spring / Summer 2015, I was asked to conduct thorough research into two areas producing original written and visual content to be published in my own digital Trend Report. Investigated Trends •

Playfulness in the Adult World – Eastern Influences

We l l b e i n g – Wa n d e r l u s t

Playfulness in the Adult World focuses on stimulating and engaging environment with an exploration into the senses, colour and excitement in design. Eastern Influences suggests way in which colour can be used within the home. Wellbeing is about exploring new methods of down-time to avoid mental burnout. Experiencing nature shows new ways to leave behind our modern gadgets and going back to what is pure.

to what is pure. Leave all your modern gadgets behind, and just be as close to the nature as you can.

FASHION PUBLICATION Photography taken for fashion publication Elle Nuovo that was produced during my second year; the publication focuses on the new trends seen on the runway and high street. The trends informed the overall styling and art direction of the photoshoot. Androgyny is a popular movement within the fashion industry, which combines masculinity and femininity characteristic; it has a distinct minimalistic aesthetic that I wanted to reference throughout all aspects of the art direction. My aim was to take a complex trend and make it more contemporary and wearable by using pieces from the high street.

EXHIBITION CURATION Using photography as the central theme I was asked to research, conceptualize, design and promote a concept for a fashion related exhibition. Bill Cunningham: The Development Process explores his process and development within photography and the fashion industry whilst playing homage to the miraculous man he is.

The exhibition has been designed in a minimal way with quotes surrounding the walls to inspire the creative mind. We wanted lots of natural light to flood the space highlighting his most treasured pieces of work. The Saatchi galley was chosen as the venue as it houses the aesthetics we want for the exhibition: natural lighting, white walls and original hardwood floors.

Room Five lets you experience Bill’s life on a very personal level, a room full of this personal possessions.

Room One is full of images from his work at Women Wear Daily.

Room Four is dedicated to his past and current work for the N e w Yo r k T i m e s : O n t h e S t r e e t .

CONCEPTUAL PUBLICATION The Fine Line is a creative fashion publication produced during my final year at university that is an extension of my personal aesthetic. The core theme is ‘Quiet and Empty Spaces’ which was explored through contemporary visuals and creative writing. Si mplicity played an integral role in all aspects of the publication from the design to the art direction and styling.

CREATIVE WRITING Creative writing was used within the publication and it had to be evocative and inspiring whilst complementing the overall theme. I wanted to juxtaposition the theme of my writing with the overall context, writing about three separate events that no longer allowed me to enter my quiet and empty spaces. Each piece was split into sections: Round One, Round Two and Round Three. The piece included is an extract from Round One.

Pardon the pun. My bedroom is at the front of the house, my bed is positioned above the front door: not something I’d recommend for those who sleep ‘light’ however this is what happens when the design of your room takes priority over the

possibility of a good night sleep.

PROJECT RESEARCH An Exploration of Minimalism: The Transition from Artistic Movement to Lifestyle Trend is my dissertation research topic conduced in my final year at university. The aim of the project research was to understand how minimalism tur ned from an artistic movement into a life style trend. Through primary and secondary research the project examined the lengths individuals have gone, and will, go to in order to lead a minimalistic life style. Throughout each chapter case studies from people’s lives have been used highlighting the positiv es and negative effects of minimalism. The intention was to find out whether this is a life style someone should adopt and questioning: does this lifestyle help a person’s life and mentality or hinder it?

Chapter 5 – Is minimalism bad for your health, mentally? “It’s nice to clear out a little body cavity space, so you can focus on the organs you really care about” - Reddit (2012). In a recent article, ‘Why minimalist living can be bad for your health’ (TheGuardian.com) Hannah Booth wrote about her discomfort when entering “a surgically clean and tidy house” that had pristine walls and polished wooden floors. Feeling like this was abnormal behaviour whilst discouraging normal human activity, she issued a warning that living this way “might be bad for your health” (Booth, 2013). If “our homes are tidied and polished until the living room resembles a show home, and the kitchen an operating theatre,” (Booth, 2013) at what point do minimalists become a slave to the

lifestyle and leave behind the look of a lived in home.

CONCEPTUAL PUBLICATION The Corporate Identity of Minimalism (TCIM) is a conceptual publication illustrating how minimalism infiltrates multiple disciplines within the creative industry. Conceptualised though my project research, my aim was to re-brand minimalism, giving the art movement and lifestyle trend a dose of humour, by mocking the controversial lengths some individuals are will to go to in order to lead a minimalist life.

T. C.I.M THE CORPORATE IDENTITY OF MINIMALISM

WHITE We love white, and white makes us happy but these photographs were taken to show you just how important other colours are. We eat with our eyes therefore food must always be visually appealing. With anything, once the familiar is taken away our perceptions are challenged. We felt this was particularly relevant with food and how it no longer felt appealing once it was coated in a layer of white paint.

If you want to serve this as a cold lifestyle, let the ingredients cool completely and refrigerate. If you’re serving it warm, miniamlism can a enjoyed straight from the oven.

KEEPING WHITE, WHITE To avoid those annoying stains on your sweatshirts, turn it inside out before digging into a big bowl of spaghetti arrabiata. It will keep those splatters hidden on the inside To stop your whites turning into that sallow grey colour, all you need to do is, touch less. Simple. Stop opening doors with the side of your arm and don’t rest your wrists on counter tops.

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE I was given the opportunity to join the creative department at Mamas and Papas as a Graphic Design Intern which has enabled me to work and assist with the six creative team members on design work for retail, art direction, styling and editorial content. Pattenology is a new interiors range that focuses on contemporary trend driven design pieces suitable for children 0–6. Working with one other creative designer I assisted on the styling of each room set as well as taking lead on two of them. This experience allowed me work closely with the photographer to produce beautiful visuals for our customer. The patternology interiors have been featured in both the Mamas & Papas catalogue and magazine; 160,000 have been printed and are available across the UK and all their international stores. I was also given the responsibility to design retail point of sales which is currently being used throughout the UK in all retail stores along with a promotional leaflet promoting the kids 2-6 clothing range. This was distributed across the south for all their London based customers.
