SECTION 1: ARTICLE 101DNP: HENRY SIBLINGS WILLIAM, JOHN, SUSANNA WILLIAM HENRY/HENERY (hereinafter referred to as “HENRY”) of Jones Cove is definitely the brother of JOHN HENRY of Cocke Co., TN, who was also in the Rev. War and drew a pension. THOMAS LOCKE/LOCKEY (hereinafter referred to as “LOCKE”) was mentioned as a mess mate of both men (WILLIAM and JOHN). He signed the marriage bond for WILLIAM HENRY and ELIZABETH JONES. THOMAS LOCKE married JOHN’S AND HENRY’S apparent sister SUSANNA HENRY who was the daughter of JOHN HENRY and MARY of Botetourt Co., VA. The marriage record said that her father JOHN HENRY gave consent. The LOCKE family Bible gives the parents of SUSANNA as JOHN HENRY and MARY. A HENRY DNA Project shows that these HENRYS were not related to PATRICK HENRY’S line, which they would have been if he descended from ALEXANDER. JOHN HENRY and MARY HAD AT LEAST THESE THREE CHILDREN WILLIAM HENRY Served in the Rev. War, from Botetourt; married ELIZABETH JONES on 14 Jun 1780. Bondsman was THOMAS LOCKE (his brother-in-law and his and JOHN’S mess mate!). THOMAS had married SUSANNA, JOHN’S and WILLIAM’S sister, in Dec 1777. WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH died in Jones Cove, Sevier Co., TN. JOHN HENRY I have no proof that JOHN married ROSANNA JARRETT, but it appears that one of two marriages was his: (1) JOHN HENRY and ROSANNA JARROT 2 Oct 1787/10 Oct 1787, or the other marriage,

4

(2) JOHN HENRY and HANNAH CUSTARD, 25 Dec 1790, bondsman JAMES HENRY, witness E. MCCALAHAN con- ABRAM CUSTARD, father, 25 Dec 1790, witness JAMES HENRY and JAMES HULS. The JOHN HENRY with wife HANNAH CUSTARD and their children are said to have ended up in Hawkins Co. TN, thus I assumed that the JOHN we were pursuing most likely married ROSANNA JARRETT; the only other marriage that makes sense for him in Botetourt Co. VA; also there were JARRETTS who came to Jefferson and Cocke Counties TN. SUSANNA HENRY Married THOMAS LOCKE in Botetourt, VA. THOMAS was mess mate at various times with WILLIAM and JOHN HENRY. SUSANNA AND THOMAS also moved to Sevier Co., TN and both of them died there.

5

CONCLUSIONS REACHED

1. As THOMAS LOCKE was the bondsman for JOHN HENRY’S marriage to ELIZABETH JONES; 2. As THOMAS LOCKE married SUSANNA, the sister of JOHN and WILLIAM HENRY; 3. As SUSANNA’S husband was a mess mate in the Revolutionary War to her brothers JOHN AND WILLIAM HENRY; 4. As all three families were on CAPT. WALKER’s tax list in Botetourt Co., VA; 5. As two families moved to Sevier Co., TN and one to Cocke Co., TN; and 6. As DNA testing of male descendants has validated our results… (Note: I think that we have three HENRY siblings and proof of their parents. – DNP)

JOHN HENRY’S REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION

“On this day of ___ (left blank) in the year of one thousand eight hundred and thirty-two personally appearing before WILLIAM ODELL He said that he was born in Bartly County Virginia” (Note: Yes, we know it was Berkeley and although it existed as a parish, it was not yet a county when he was born. He was technically born in Berkeley Parish, Frederick Co., VA. However, that discussion is not the point of this whole research that I am sharing with you. DNP) “And shortly after he was born, he removed with his parents to Botetourt County, Virginia. He remained there until he was called out against the hostile Indians at Fort Vanbevers (?Vanbebbers?) in Greenbrier County. He rendezvoused at that fort, protected it, served on a scouting party and remained there for eight months until he returned to Botetourt Co., VA. While there he served under COL. DONLY and CAPT. GRAHAM. He (later) enlisted in the service of the United States” (Note: again to be later called the United States and would not have so been called when he was serving! - DNP) “under COL. LEWIS, MAJ. LOCKARD and CAPT. F. SMITH. LEWIS and SMITH fell ill and he (JOHN) was then attached to LOCKARD’S Company under COL. VANCE when he (JOHN) fought in the Battle of Little York under the command of GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON and GENERAL MARCUS (MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE) and after the surrender of ‘CORN WALLACE’, he (JOHN) assisted in guarding of the prisoners (on the trip) to the Barracks two miles from Winchester Town, passing the towns of Williamsburg and Fredericksburg. When he received a discharge, the words following viz: November 8, 1781,” (Note: so he still had his discharge in 1832!!! - DNP): “JOHN HENRY a soldier in CAPT. MAY’S Company of the Botetourt Militia is hereby discharged by order of CAPT. VANCE. Signed by WALLACE ESTILL, Lieutenant.” “And the discharge is the only documentary evidence that he has recollection of. And he knows no person whose testimony he can procure who are residents of this county (Cocke).

14

He messed (ate and camped) with HUGH CALDWELL, THOMAS LUCK, ROBERT HUTCHINSON, JOSEPH SHADDEN, and STURDY JONES.” (Note: Should be LOCKE, perhaps just sloppy penmanship by ODELL.) THOMAS LOCKE was JOHN’S brother-in-law. (Note: I would assume (no proof) that STURDY JONES may have had a full name of STURDIVANT, and more importantly that he could have been the brother of JOHN’S sister-in-law ELIZABETH JONES who was the wife of WILLIAM HENRY of Jones Cove, Sevier Co., TN - DNP). His term was three months against the British and eight months against the Indians making a total of eleven months of service. After the Revolution he has resided in Cocke County, Tennessee.” (Note: It does not give the date that he moved to Cocke Co., TN, but we know he was still in Botetourt Co. in 1785 per the tax list. The pension application gives his own beautiful signature, that of an educated man, I would say. It is not the writing of WILLIAM ODELL for this signature! And it is actually spelled “JOHN HENARY” in JOHN’S own signature! -DNP) “We TOLIVER SISK and THOMAS MANTOOTH swear that they are acquainted with him and it is believed and accepted in the neighborhood that JOHN HENRY was a Revolutionary War soldier.” End of Transcription

Some or all of these people lived on or near Craig’s Creek. This is in what is now Craig Co., VA. JOHN and WILLIAM are in HENRY WALKER’S District. HUGH MEENS (MEANS) married SARAH SNODGRASS 19 Aug 1796; bondsman HENRY HOLSTINE, wit. S. LEWIS, consent from HUGH MEANS and JOHN SNODGRASS (both HUGH and SARAH must have been underage), wit. ISAAC TAYLOR, JEREMIAH HACKET and JOHN TAYLOR.

JOHN McCOLLUM. There are McCULLUM AND McCOLLUM families in East TN in 1830. One or more of them may relate to this man.

WALTER McDONALD. He married MARGARET SMALLWOOD 14 Aug 1779; one bondsman ARCHIBALD KLEY.

JAMES McMAHAN 1 0 0. This was JAMES WELLINGTON McMAHAN who would later marry RACHEL CALVERT, one bondsman ROBERT CALVERT, wit. BENJAMIN ROWE (deputy clerk, lawyer). JAMES WELLINGTON McMAHAN and RACHEL CALVERT McMAHAN came to Sevier Co., TN and died there. ID: I00527 Name: JAMES WELLINGTON MCMAHAN Sex: M Birth: Abt 1755 in County Dublin, Ireland Death: 16 Sep 1831 in Sevier County, Tennessee, USA Burial: 18 Sep 1831 Sevier County, Tennessee, USA Reference Number: IND527 1

JOHN SMITH was probably one of John Henry’s commanders. This was probably the JOHN SMITH who married MARTHA WOOD 4 May 1780; bondsman HUGH LOGAN, wit. SAMUEL WALKER, JR.

MARTIN SPENCER. There are two SPENCER families in Cocke Co., p. 250 in 1830, and others in East TN who might or might not be related to MARTIN SPENCER.

RICHARD SUMMERFIELD

JOHN TAYLOR. Since JOHN TAYLOR 1764-1845 with his wife CATHERINE sold his land on Craigs Creek in Botetourt Co., Virginia in 1803’s and his assumed son FRANCIS ASBURY TAYLOR was born in Kentucky in 1806 (per 1850 and 1860 censuses), we assume that JOHN came to Kentucky between 1803 and 1806. He therefore could also be the JOHN TAYLOR who is listed

22

on the 1806 tax list without land and on the 1807 tax list with 200 acres on Buck Creek and on the 1808 tax list without land. He is likely the JOHN who is shown on Flat Lick Creek from 1808 to 1818 with 50 acres and in 1818 and 1819 with 87 acres, assuming that it was his son JOHN who got the grant for 37 acres. Since JOHN TAYLOR 1764-1845 husband of CATHERINE WILSON was in Rockcastle Co in 1820 and was not known to have been in Tennessee, he probably is not the JOHN TAYLOR of the 1818 grant. The parents of JOHN TAYLOR 1764-1845 were JOHN AND MARY TAYLOR of the Craigs Creek area of Botetourt County. JOHN AND MARY TAYLOR sold a tract of land on Craig’s Creek to JOHN TAYLOR JR in 1802 (Bk 8, p 92) and JOHN TAYLOR JR and wife CATHERINE sold it in 1803 (Bk 8, p 228). JOHN TAYLOR SR died in Botetourt Co. in 1812 per will. A Wayne Co KY record states: “ I, ISAAC TAYLOR of Wayne County Kentucky to trusty friend JOHN TAYLOR of Pulaski County, to ‘recover, receive and obtain’ all that falls to ISAAC TAYLOR from the estate of his father JOHN TAYLOR deceased of the county of Botetourt,Virginia 8 Sept 1813” (Deed Book B, p 98-99). SECTION I: ARTICLE 102DNP: MARSHALL HENRY FAMILY MYSTERY MARSHALL had previously been on Cocke Co. TN censuses before showing up in Jefferson Co. TN. MARSHALL'S mother was LINA HENRY. We assume that LINA had been married to a HENRY and he died, but we don't know for sure. We have a DNA participant from a descendant of MARSHALL’S and they match no other HENRYS in our large DNA project at <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~henrydna/lineager7.html>. So they definitely are not from the lineage of the HENRYS from the Kodak area, nor that of HENRY HENRY, nor from WILLIAM of Jones Cove or his brother JOHN of Cocke Co. TN. This family is still a mystery. In trying to determine which HENRY lineage a MARTHA HENRY belonged, I don’t think that she is a part of the HENRY CROSSROADS HENRY nor to the lineage of HENRY HENRY. It is possible that MARTHA was a daughter of MARSHALL HENRY. MARTHA died in 1930 at the age of 60 and I think it was in Knoxville. Other sources give after 1830, perhaps after the 1830 census. 1880 CENSUS, JEFFERSON CO. TN, DISTRICT 5 Source: “Ancestry.com” lists this district as being District 3, which is incorrect. The following information was for Households 300 and 304 that was taken 17 June 1880: ELBERT is listed as age 15 on the census of the household of his parents JOHN and RHODA. In Households 310 and 314 (nine households between ELBERT PHILLIPS' home and the home of MARSHALL HENRY) were: HENRY, MARSHALL, age 39; farmer; all in family born in Tenn, with both parents of all born in Tenn. Households 69 and 74: HENRY, MARSHALL was born May 1839, age 61; married forty years (Note: I found on detailed family tree that his middle initial was “N” - DNP). Their census entry was 9 or 11 June 1900. NANCY (RAINES) was born July 1839; age 58 (at time of census taking, NANCY would have been age 58, not age 59). Married 40 years. Had 9 children born and 8 children living. The children were no longer living at home. Households 84 and 86: This information was taken 11 June 1900 PHILLIPS, ELBERT MAY was born in 1865; age 35; all in family born in Tenn; parents born Tenn MARTHA D. was born Dec 1873; age 26; married 10 yrs., had 5 children and 5 children living; maiden name RAINES

I finally found DAVID ANDERSON who moved as far as he could get away from Tennessee and not leave the continental USA to keep from being tried for murder. I believe he was the day laborer in the home of a Scottish immigrant farmer in Nappa, California in 1860. Then I believe I have found him in 1870 - Pendleton to Willow Creek, Umatilla, Oregon. OBITUARY OF PORTER HENRY

Source: “Knoxville Register,” July 30, 1845, p.3, col. 3, transcribed by Debbie Painter “Departed this life at his mother’s in Sevier County, Tenn., PORTER HENRY, son of SAMUEL HENRY, dec’d, in the 18th year of his life. PORTER had been some 8 years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church during which time he was a faithful and regular in attendance on the means of grace and as a Christian had the confidence of those that knew him. He had been for some years subject to fits of which he gradually got worse; but it is suggested the fever caused his death. He was truly a son of affliction to the last. Three weeks ago, he was at preaching and just as that time seemed to be as well as ever, and his prospects for a better world bright; but on that same morning he was more seriously attacked, and died yesterday evening July the 10th, making, no doubt, a happy exchange of affliction for joy, of sorrow for everlasting liles. He left an afflicted mother and 2 brothers at home and one sister in Alabama with many friends to mourn their loss.” PORTER was a son of SAMUEL HENRY and MARGARET (BRYAN), and grandson of MAJOR HUGH HENRY.

SAMUEL HENRY, ONE OF PORTER HENRY’S BROTHERS

SAMUEL HENRY, merchant, Gadsden, was born in Sevier County, East Tennessee, July 17, 1825, and is a son of SAMUEL and MARGARET (BRYAN) HENRY. The senior MR. HENRY was born in the same county in 1788, and his wife in 1798. They reared three children: MARY A., wife of A.G. HENRY; JOHN B., merchant and farmer; and the subject of this sketch. JOHN B. was a soldier in the Confederate Army during the war, and the senior MR. HENRY, a farmer all his life by occupation, was with GENERAL JACKSON in the War of 1812, and by him 34

appointed collector of commissary, associated with JUDGE PORTER. He died at Henry’s Cross Roads, East Tennessee, 1835. His widow died in 1845. They were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The family came from Virginia into Tennessee away back in the early settlement of the latter State. COLONEL HERBERT *see “Ramsay’s History of Tennessee”), the maternal grandfather of our subject, was a distinguished Indian fighter during his days. He was a prominent farmer, and served many times in the Legislature of Tennessee. SAMUEL HENRY was reared on a farm, and received a West Point education. At the age of twenty-three years he entered the mercantile business with his cousin, A.G. HENRY, at Gunter’s Landing, and was there until 1861. In April 1861, he raised a company and went into the war, and was a member of the Ninth Alabama Infantry, and later became a member of the Eighth Alabama Cavalry, Clinton’s Brigade. He left the service with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. In the spring of 1866, he located at Gadsden, where he has since been in the mercantile business. He was married in 1856 to MISS CHARITY E. FENNELL, daughter of DR. JAMES W. FENNELL. MR. HENRY is a member of the masonic fraternity and the knights of honor. PUBLIC TREES

1. At “Ancestry.com” there is a public tree by NANCY CLOWERS that gives CATHERINE MARIAH SMITH 1818-1904 with parents REBECCA CROSBY (born 7 Dec 1781 Stafford Co., VA-died 11 Sep 1844). Married before 1818 to WILLIAM COLEMAN SMITH. It has REBECCA’S parents as URIEL CROSBY and SUSANNAH CONWAY. It has WILLIAM COLEMAN SMITH born 1770 in Virginia. REBECCA had a twin WILLIAM CROSBY. 2. Another tree online at “Ancestry.com” by a MICHAEL SMITH of Roanoke, VA may be another good source for the SMITH surname as he has run the surname back many generations:

SECTION III: ARTICLE 101DNP: WALKER FTDNA GRP. 5

The research in this Article was gathered in response to a descendant’s request for assistance in finding the parents of JAMES M. WALKER (born abt 1815 in AL).

INTRODUCTION

JAMES M. WALKER married MARTHA K. JONES 2 Aug 1832 in Madison Co., AL. MARTHA was his second wife. MARTHA was born abt 1810 in TN and was the daughter of SHADRACK JONES and SELAH DOWLIN and sister to ABRAHAM JONES who married NANCY WALKER in 1835.

1830 MADISON COUNTY TN CENSUS INFORMATION The first step was to look at the 1830 Madison Co., AL census to see the WALKERS who were there and if there were JONES’ neighbors. There were nine WALKER households in 1830 in Madison Co., AL. SHADRACK JONES lived in the section called Range 1 and 2, and since young people married neighbors or people they went to church with (or relatives), I looked for WALKER families. Source: Image 31 of 68 at “Ancestry.com” for 1830 Madison Co., AL lists the following: WILLIAM JONES 21001-11001 ARCHIBALD GIBBS JAMES HARDIN THOMAS LANDROTH/LANDRATH ISAAC COLLINS JAMES LANDROTH/LANDRATH JOHN JONES SR. 2200001-012 (wife appears to be deceased) JAMES WALKER 210101-001101

SECTION IV: ARTICLE 101DNP: BRIMER FAMILY OF EAST TENNESSEE

BRIMER SOURCES

By researching the Jefferson County Census at the time VINEYARD BRIMER was there, you can pretty well read the deeds and locate where the family was. I know that VINEYARD and RHODA were in Knox County by 1880, but look where the neighbors on their Jefferson County deeds were living in 1880 after the BRIMERS had already left. A good site on the BRIMERS is at <http://catorfamily.com/genealogy/russell.html and http://jefferson.tngenealogy.net/research-aids/17-families/321-bible-of-vine yard-brimer
