More than the vendor listings, the photographic inspiration and the colorful clothing spread across our pages, a wedding is a far reaching and fulfilling social event marking an unforgettable milestone for so many people from an individual to an entire community. Though we can continue to marry old charm with modern convenience and luxury, the essence of a wedding remains the same: an artistic and spiritual expression of love in the company of those we love. Become the creative director of your dream wedding celebration, but be open to the emotional and collaborative journey and invite in others around you to share it. Whether that means letting your guests participate in your wedding digitally through social media (pg.130) or hiring an experienced wedding planner to organize and delegate successfully, this issue of Jodi is devoted to the full wedding experience and those looking forward to it. Discover yourself as a man and woman in transition and allow yourself the freedom to feel emotion each step of the way. We take this beautiful evolution to a whole new level with our front cover that features a single and beautifully complete woman before marriage next to her married self after entering a new and different stage in her life with her husband. At the end of the day, the details will all come together and the images and feelings of your big wedding picture will be engraved in your heart and mind forever. Take it all in with Jodi. You are about to get married. Sincerely, Iqra Azhar Editor

WEDDING TREND ALERTS PHOTOBOOTHS It feels retro- inspired, but the new in thing at events everywhere is renting a photobooth to capture fun moments of you and your guests. Entertainment companies often provide photobooths which can be rented for a certain amount of time with props included. You can also create your own booth or backdrop, provide props and direct your hired wedding photographer to shoot photos of you and your guests during cocktail hour.
FOOD TRUCKS Food trucks are the newest thing in Toronto. Treat your guests to something unique at one of your events. Maybe even get one parked outside of your venue if it works for your wedding party. Everything from heartwarming street food to scrumptious cupcakes are being sold on-the-go in the GTA and are available for special events, commercial shoots and wedding ceremonies. Check out Pretty Sweet Mobile Cupcakery and Chef Aleem’s upcoming Holy Grill food truck to start.
MODERN CALLIGRAPHY Custom lettering is in. Especially if created with a calligraphy pen and ink. Everything from framed prints, screenprinted tshirts and wedding invitations are showing up with modern calligraphic writing. Not into very swirly, fancy script? No problem. There are many different letterers out there who write in all different styles from structured block capitals to light, tight and chic. Choose a style that you are a fan of and that closely matches your wedding theme much like choosing fonts on a screen for printing. Even if your invites are done, you can still add calligraphy to another component of your wedding, such as table names and numbers, guest seating charts, programs, etc.

INDIAN MIDNIGHT SWEET/SNACK TABLE Instead of doing yet another macarons, cupcakes, cookies and cake dessert table, try a midnight snack table full of South Asian munchies. Divide it into two parts: savory on one side and sugary on the other. Depending on your roots in Sri Lanka, you might want to include various rolls, patties, pastries, tropical fruits and sweetmeats. Have hot chai shot glasses to wash it all down to give a soft burst of caffeine to partygoers or some cold Faluda to refresh energetic dancers.
CROP TOP WEDDING LENGHA/BENARSI SAREES Crop tops have officially taken over the wedding scene in India and while they were always the fashion forward outfit for the sisters of the bride, crop top bridal lehengas are trending everywhere. Not limited to lehengas alone, crop tops with Kanchipuram or Banarsi sarees worn by chic South Indian brides are trending as well. Since this silhouette is modern, your dupatta drape should just be a simple veil over the head. Taking the dupatta drape in a regular Gujarati style or a sari style over a lehenga can tend to take away the edginess of the outfit. Since the choli will be cut short, the full sleeves adds grace to the look. Ensure your crop top blouse ends just at the middle of your rib cage, which is the thinnest part of every woman. The band at the waist which rests flat against your stomach is also super flattering and gives the illusion of a slim body.

One Week Before...
Five Days Left...
The next few days you may feel a host of emotions that can contradict each other. While everyone on your friend’s list is already flooding your News feed with congratulations for the rest of your lives, you should take comfort that all the hard stuff is done.
Your relationships with your family and family-to-be need to be in tip-top shape before the wedding. The day of the wedding is going to be stressful, and you will need the love of your family to be the adhesive keeping you together so that you can enjoy the day you have spent a great deal of time planning.
Now is the time to keep your chins up. So leave the downcast glances for the ceremony, and get your stuff together, double check everything, call or email your vendors again. The waiting game may be the worst part of the wedding planning process, but they really are the most important.
But you have five days left and that’s plenty of time for things to go wrong—and things will. So your best bet is to have people who love you in your corner.
Wives-to be: There’s a lot going on in your head. Numbers to call, bridesmaids to break up, parents to sedate (or just avoid completely). If you are already twitching while answering the same questions over and over again to different people, just wait until the day of your wedding. It always gets worse before it gets better.
Much of the modern wedding literature promotes the couple-centric wedding. But the truth is that South Asian weddings at their core are extremely familycentric. The weddings are so much fun and they connect us with a larger legacy of tradition and history.
Husbands-to be: planning a wedding is the test match for the world cup. Even if you win the test, doesn’t mean you don’t have to be prepared for the series. Pay attention to the details your fiancée does, because you both should practice playing as a team now.
Keep reading below on advice about how to clear your head and prepare for an amazing wedding. Some of it may seem like common sense, but when the camera Planning the smaller has been flashing in your events like the Sangeet, eye all day, and those details you envisioned at the the Mehendi and the Haldi beginning of your planning process, common sense may be a pain, but bite sinks deeper and deeper on your tongue and do it. It is your list of priorities.
Six Days Left... Get your money in check. You want to find solace the week before your wedding? Don’t sit there and twiddle your thumbs. Get. Things. Done. There’s nothing more satisfying than being prepared.
these smaller events that prepare us for the intensity of the wedding day. It is the people that hold us together that make our marriage worth the stress.
Even if you have been diligently monitoring your wedding finances all throughout the planning process, there might be something you have missed. Get an unbiased third party to help you. Sometimes it helps to have a fresh pair of eyes to catch obvious things. There are going to be many vendors who will ask you to pay them upfront on the day of, based on the pre-negotiated contracts. However if you’re planning on paying; put the money in separate envelopes and clearly label them. In order to be relaxed later, you want to get these things out of the way now. Better yet, delegate someone to hand the envelopes out as the festivities come to a close. pg. 36 | Jodi Bridal 2015
— One Week Left
The traditions of a full south Asian wedding experience is designed to equip the bride and groom with all the blessings they will need to lead a happy marriage. Planning the smaller events like the Sangeet, the Mehendi and the Haldi may be a pain, but bite your tongue and do it. It is these smaller events that prepare us for the intensity of the wedding day. It is the people that hold us together that make our marriage worth the stress.
Four Days Left... You’ve got the money sorted. You’ve had all the prewedding events and now you just need to unwind. Plan an event with your bridal party. Not a wedding planning event and not another Bachelor/ Bachelorette party. In fact, ban all conversations about wedding activity. Plan a low-budget event—a pizza, Netflix and ice cream kind of event. Or go play cricket at an indoor sports arena followed by chicken shawarma take-out. Just because there’s no banquet hall and no decision between sit-down and buffet, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. It’s a good feeling not having to care about details to get together with your friends.
— Six Days Left Bridal Tip: as much as your parents and in-laws care about your wedding, they are not exactly the unbiased pair of eyes you need to review finances. If you trusted your in-laws or your parents with paying for certain things at the wedding, let them handle theirs, you handle yours. That’s what a bridal party is for. And that’s going to be a huge part of your marriage too.
— Five Days Left If there are contributions you wish to make to these smaller events, don’t be surprised if your family is excited to have your help. Planning these events with your family is the best way to build relationships and make sense of the full south Asian wedding experience
— Four Days Left Don’t be afraid to plan a boys and girls event. An informal setting is probably the best circumstances for the groomsmen and bridesmaids to get to know each other, if they haven’t already. No stuffy formal attire, no ceremonies to observe, no pressure.
Planning get-togethers with your friends will help the both of you after the wedding too. You might feel like your marriage is completely revolving around your spouse. Or perhaps you are running out of patience for traditions and tasks that run completely different from yours. Or maybe you just need a change in schedule. Having a night of low-key fun before the wedding is good practice for after the wedding too.
Three Days Left... For the Groom: Dear Husbands, if your head isn’t into the wedding game yet, now is the time. Review every speech you will have to say—the wedding toast and the wedding vows inclusive. Not everyone is good at public speaking. And you don’t want to be the groom that said something regrettable while being filmed.
— Three Days Left Check out samples of wedding speeches and toasts online in case you never paid attention to them before.
— Two Days Left See our vendor listing at the back of the magazine for help with tailors and spas.
— One Day Before Sometimes the best gifts are ones you cannot buy. Be creative!
If you really want to get ahead, plan some kind of gift for your wife to open before she walks around the fire or down the aisle. No need to spend an extravagant sum of money (unless you really want to). Find the first picture the both of you took together, scribble an inside joke, and tie it with a ribbon (and never underestimate the effectiveness of a thoughtful gift). For the Bride: Ladies, work on your speech. If your groom is not the sort to take the lead on public speaking, you might have to be the one to make the important address. Take a break from the table seating and the colour swatches and just do it. There are people you can’t forget to thank, so thank them. Your wedding guests will want to hear how you met your groom, or perhaps the first time you’ve met his family. That leaves plenty of starting points for your speech even more directions you can take it. Don’t obsess either. If you overwork your speech you just may regret what you say on the stage. If the objective is to relax by getting stuff done, don’t stress yourself out writing some speech that you can edit for the wedding video.
Two Days Left... For the Groom: Everyone likes to say that the wedding is all about the bride. And if you’ve let her make all the decisions, it will Just because there’s no feel like it. But the marriage is also a rite of passage for banquet hall and no men. The least you can do is decision between sit-down look good.
and buffet, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. It’s a good feeling not having to care about details to get together with your friends.
Put the finishing touches on your look. This is the time to get a haircut or get a shave or trim. And if the barber (or you) makes a mistake, there is still plenty of time for errors to grow out.
Assuming that you already have your suits for the ceremonies and the reception, you have your accessories in order—the tiepin, the pocket scarf, the accessories for the ceremonies—know what day to wear what. If you are renting suits for the wedding, make sure the suits that they ordered are on track: the right colours, the right patterns, and the right sizes. Then fill in your groomsmen. How are they supposed to help you on the day of your wedding if they don’t
know what’s going on? For the Bride: You will have way more accessories and outfits and headdresses to worry about. Usually the mother-of-the bride handles this, but don’t be too shy to check over her work, respectfully, of course. Your elders will tout the benefits of coconut oil or mustard oil in the hair. But now is not the time to try new things. Only you know what works best for you. You don’t want to risk getting a rash and having to itch off your foundation at the altar. In fact if you really want to make both sides happy, take all the ladies to the spa. You’ll be surprised how quickly they forget about South Asian soaps, powders and creams during a hot stone massage.
The day before the wedding... By now, everything is laid out for you—outfits and accessories alike. The vows are written and the speeches are rehearsed. Still, there is a chance something can go wrong. You still have about 24 hours to go, and they will be the most disorienting 24 hours of your life. People from far and near will be adorning you with sweets, jewelry, and topical wedding advice. The secret is not to let it get to you, which is a lot easier said than done. There is only one person who should matter right now—your soon-to-be spouse. If the relatives are scaring you with their topical advice, understand their good intentions. Do not take out your fear on the person you will be marrying in less than 24 hours. Call your fiancé and reminisce about the good times you’ve had together. Think about the plans you made and how they’ve changed for the better since you first met. Stay at home. You may be afraid that your parents are going to drive you crazy, but don’t. In fact, spend time with them. When you’re not reviewing table seating and making sure that all your vendors will be there tomorrow, pencil in some time with your parents—look at baby pictures, watch old movies you used to watch as a kid. Let them have the last 24 hours with you as a kid. If you have planned to have your spouse receive a special gift in the morning, make sure your gift makes it to the house. Hand it to one of the parents, the Maid of Honour or the Best Man. But make sure the person will be there. Also, it makes a great scene for the wedding video.
Wedding Day Nothing tests a marriage quite like a wedding. Planning the wedding is intense too, but the day of exposes everything. All the things that you did right and all the things you did wrong. From the moment you wake up, your brain is probably freaking out. Instead of getting ready for work, you are getting ready for your wedding. Not your cousin’s wedding, not your brother’s wedding, YOUR wedding. Today, make an extra effort not to fight each other. This sounds like awful advice because it puts both www.jodibridal.com | pg. 37
parties at risk for exploding at the wedding. But once you live with each other every day, you will learn valuable lessons in timing. And the day you get married is a terrible time to start something with your bride or groom. You are groomed and polished and today you will be adorned until you cannot handle the weight of all the gold and fresh flowers. But enjoy the day. Take in the beauty of all the hard work and sleepless nights that have brought you to this point. Revel in the future you have together and don’t forget all the people that have come together to make it happen. Use your bridal party. If they are the people you trust enough to help plan your wedding, they must mean something. So if your brain is freaking out, or you need a break from all the camera flashes, call out someone from your bridal party and let them take care of it.
Wedding Day Don’t be shy to follow through with plans. Let the stress of the day melt off and energize yourself for the most ecstatic night of your life. If you had planned to do something different at your wedding, remember that you may only get one chance to express yourself. Hold tight to your spouse and go for it.

When Babitha and Roshan met at a mutual friend’s college party, they did not think much of it. But the second time they were introduced to each other, this time through social media, they were hooked. It was an instant and deep connection. After a couple months of getting to know each other, Roshan officially asked Babitha out on a date and the rest is history. After years of courtship and friendship, Roshan started to drop hints about going back to McMaster University where it all began. So Babitha was completely blown away when in August of 2013, the summer the active couple had been both training hard for a Tough Mudder obstacle course event, Roshan invited her for one of their regular bike rides, took her deep into a neck of woods and surprised her. There were trees strung with beautiful Chinese lanterns and custom trail signs with noted past memories and clear directions to reach the end of the trail where Roshan stood surrounded by tea lights and petals and tiki torches asking Babitha if she would join him on this adventure of a lifetime. Giddy with joy, Babitha said yes and they both went home to call their immediate family to share the great news. With an outdoors backyard engagement party out of the way and both families on board, the date was set for an interfaith celebration on September 4 and 5 of 2014 to allow for two different religious wedding ceremonies. The couple already had an idea of what they liked and actually booked a banquet hall straight away before deciding they wanted to hire a wedding planner for assistance and guidance. While their wedding planner took care of the essentials like dÊcor, food and reception details, the couple felt at ease and were able
www.jodibridal.com | pg. 43
to organize themselves and even contribute some DIY creative aspects to their marriage celebration, such as creating their own wedding invitations and seating charts. The Hindu ceremony took place first on September 4, 2014. With a go-get-em attitude, Babitha was calm and alert on the morning of her wedding day. Wearing a Kanchipuram sari in a soft, rustic gold and classic temple gold coin jewelry with pearl work that she found at Aalayaa’s in Markham, Babitha walked into the mandar, heard the traditional music and absorbed reality. Though they were most excited to see each other after a week of total separation, they could not wait until they were officially husband and wife. Roshan wore a burthi and after he tied the thali on Babitha, she started to cry tears of happiness. Hair and makeup was by Amplified Soul. Babitha changed into a simple ruby red koorai Kanchipuram silk sari, with matching simple temple jewelry and took her first memorable photos as Mrs. Jesuratnam. They went home after a long eventful day to get ready for the following day’s Church ceremony. The next day, Babitha was a vision in all-white. With a classic all lace fitted A line dress and custom made longsleeved bolero, she captured sweet modern vintage perfectly for a traditional Roman Catholic wedding. Shirley Wu did her hair and makeup that day. Keeping her eyes
fixed firmly on her handsome groom, Babitha battled nerves and made it across the aisle, next to Roshan who stood strongly beside his wife and interactive priest in a dashing custom made black tuxedo suit from Garrison Bespoke. After a fun and cross-cultural experience for all, members of the bridal party spent time at a conservation park, taking photos and celebrating before heading off to the reception venue. By this time, both Roshan and Babitha along with their close friends and family were ready to party. They danced into the soft, romantic hall, with hints of purple lighting which was decorated in colors of blush, champagne and navy blue. This was then followed by a flash dance mob which transitioned into their first slow dance together. It was a night of ravishing simplicity. The evening flowed well into the night and was well focused and guests were never left unentertained. There was professional entertainment, an open bar and a huge group selfie ruse got everyone out on the dance floor. The party continued into the wee hours and the newly married couple made sure to enjoy every moment.

Jeyarooban (Ruben) and Rashmy had not planned on finding their soulmate while going to Europe to study medicine. Ruben was in Budapest, Hungary and Rashmy was studying in Poznan, Poland and they met each other for the first time while attending a medical conference in Warsaw, Poland. They quickly became great friends who would talk on the phone for hours at a time! In 2010, their final year of medical school, they decided to meet again in Warsaw. As fate would happen, it was Valentine’s Day, and that’s when they really knew. After they were both sure that they were right for each other, Ruben flew down to Toronto from Norway to meet her folks and Rashmy also flew down to Norway to meet Ruben’s larger family a couple months later. Ruben popped the expected question in Guildwood Park, in Toronto, a beautiful garden with history and architecture, where, of course, Rashmy said yes. They decided to have a traditional “Ponnu Pakarathu” event where Rashmy wore a royal blue with red Kanchipuram saree from Nalli Silks paired with traditional ‘Temple jewellery.’ There was a lot of singing and dancing. Later, they had a South Indian style cultural engagement, the “Nichiayathartham,” where a priest was also present and a wonderful ceremony took place at Rashmy’s parents’ backyard in a beautifully homemade Indian canopy. This ceremony was then followed by food, music and dancing. On July 9th, 2011, a wonderful black tie banquet event ended it all off. Due to their love affair with Europe and the fact that their own story had began there, the couple booked Paul and Will, of Paul and Will Photography, to fly out to Ireland in April 2014 to travel Europe and to capture all the beautiful moments! Travelling and posing near the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, having macaroons by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or roaming the ruins in Rome and just relaxing on a gondola in Venice all made for an amazing pre-wedding photoshoot and trip. They waited until they were both in one place, Dublin, starting the Family Medicine Residency Program, before starting to plan the summer 2014 Toronto wedding. Right off the bat, Rashmy signed up for another exciting adventure in her life when she decided to go to Chennai, India with Ruben, his mother and her own mom and sister to find the right wedding invitations, outfits, jewelry and accessories to match the ancient, medieval royal Indian wedding theme, all in 15 days. Upcoming young designers Shurti and Sakrit brought alive her dream www.jodibridal.com | pg. 51
dress and jewelry, which were personally designed by the bride-to-be. All bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits were coordinated to complement bridal outfits. On June 29, 2014, ten beautiful bridesmaids turned a normally chaotic time into a lively atmosphere as they got ready. Naturally nervous, Rashmy tried to relax and think back to first dates, intimate adventures and travels and other memorable days as she got her make up and hair done by the talented Angel from Angell Beauty. A limo ride brought everyone to the Scarborough Convention Centre, where all the lights had been dimmed and Ravi Shankar sithar music played. Bridesmaids entered first with antique lit lanterns and behind them, Rashmy, wearing a a high-waisted emerald green silk voluminous lengha with a thick embroidery hemline and a three-quarter sleeve length high neck blouse made from traditional silk brocade with intricate hand embroidery and cream organza net dupatta, entered on a dolak that was carried by all the groomsmen. Ruben stood waiting on the manavarai in a custom made Indian suit from Lagaan in Chennai with echoes of paisley and a matching Indian green shawl, a vision of Indian monarchy indeed. The bride entered again with parents and sister by her side in a ravishing chilli red pure silk Kanchipuram koorai saree from Nalli Silks Chennai with an olive green border and swan motifs embroidered with hand woven real gold Jari. Custom designed antique gold jewelry with fresh water pearls and gems matched the royal Indian theme perfectly. Ruben’s turban, gurutha, and shoes were all custom designed and tailored to his fitting; including his pashmina shawl; which he changed into to compliment his wife’s koorai saree. Their European vintage reception took place the following day, June 30th, 2014 at The Doctor’s House in Kleinburg, Ontario, an old German village in Vaughan where old world charm has been preserved perfectly. The whole venue was booked for the day so arriving guests could experience the beautiful environment, from the cocktail hour in the garden to performing cellists playing pg. 52 | Jodi Bridal 2015
classical music. The newlyweds arrived at the venue in a 1960’s Rolls Royce. The bride entered wearing a Dublin-found boutique designer dress in a mermaid style with a sweetheart neck, all lace embroidered with pearl embellishments in the color pearl ivory with a beautiful large satin bow in the back. The groom wore a slim-fit checked suit from Tiger of Sweden with his embroidered tied from Holt Renfrew. Bridesmaids wore rustic pink gowns with lace embellishments and carried baby’s breath bouquet, while the groomsmen wore grey suits with rustic pink ties to match the girls.

Kavaskar and Anuja lived in the same neighbourhood in Ottawa and shared many mutual friends, but their paths had not crossed until that one sunny summer day back in 2005, where they bumped into each other in a lounge area at Carleton University. For Kavaskar, ‘it was love at first sight’, and this marked the beginning of their love story. After 4 years of dating, Kavaskar decided to make it official and surprised Anuja on her engineering ring ceremony. He handed her a bouquet of red roses and took her for a walk on campus. It was a beautiful, romantic evening and the sky was filled with brilliant colors. Just as the sun set, he took her to the building where they first met. He got down on one knee, took a small box out from his pocket, opened it, and popped the question. The blushing bride-to-be said ‘yes’ with tears of joy running down her cheeks, then Kavaskar put a stunning shiny rock on her finger, and it was ‘official’. They mutually agreed that it was too early to set the date as they were both keen on accomplishing a few more goals prior to settling down so Kavaskar focused on his career and successfully sponsored all of his family from Sri Lanka while Anuja went on to do her Masters and focused on higher education in Engineering. In early 2014, both the families met and decided on July 4th 2014 as the auspicious day to tie the knot and to have the engagement party in Anuja’s hometown in Ottawa and have the wedding in Kavaskar’s hometown in Toronto. The engagement party was a modern elegant affair and done according to Catholic tradition with cocktail dresses and suits. On the morning of their engagement day, the ravishing bride-to-be slipped into a signature taffeta ball gown with form-fitting bodice featuring a sweetheart neckline and a dropped waist, with all over ruched details and cascading floral appliqués on the bottom part of the gown. The bridal bouquet featured rich ivory roses with pearl and diamond accents. Her bridesmaids joined her wearing one-shoulder deep-brown satin cocktail dresses with a pleated bodice, and a white satin belt with lace and pearl accents. The handsome groom-to-be looked stunning in a classy black designer tuxedo, and was joined by his groomsmen wearing all black. The tables were dressed in rich gold linen with deep red floral centerpieces. The emcees kept all of the guests entertained throughout the night! Kavaskar and Anuja ended the night exchanging vows and rings in the presence of 150 guests. The couple decided to have both the wedding and the reception at the Scarborough Convention Centre on the same day. With the Hindu ceremony set for the evening followed by the reception, the bride was wellrested and began getting dressed with her bridesmaids at around 11 AM. The bride opted for a modern twist to the traditional hindu wedding look and went with modern hair buns and quarter sleeve length blouses for herself and her bridesmaids. The bride’s saree was a rich light gold Kanchipuram with a deep red cut-work border and lots of stone work. Waiting handsomely in a Sherwani at the altar, Kavaskar sat in front a Bollywood style mandap with lighted crystal pillars and the backdrop in rich colours and extravagant details www.jodibridal.com | pg. 77

inspired by the golden temple theme. Soon after the ritual had commenced, the bride was handed a vibrant chilli-red koorai complete with American crystal work to change into. In the presence of over 500 guests, and the blessing of family and friends, Kavaskar tied the thali on Anuja. Soon after the traditional ceremony ended and the couple received blessings from all of the guests, the bride changed into a glamorous maroon lehenga and the groom changed into a stylish designer suit. Both walked down the spiral staircase and towards a beautifully decorated six-tiered cake by CanAsia, each layer full of rich flavour, ranging from Red Velvet Cheesecake, French Vanilla and Rich Dark Chocolate. After having a bite of the cake, the newlywed slow danced, and the guests enjoyed the night away. As wedding favours all of their guests received dĂŠcor pieces and dinnerware sets from Stokes, which was a reflection upon the home decor interest of the bride. The entire event was a lavish and luxurious celebration of love.

Sometimes the perfect match does come through someone you know and trust. In 2009, Banuka and Harish were introduced through a mutual friend. They became instant friends and hit it off right away. For Harish, the more he got to know Banuka, the more he realized she was the one he wanted to be with and eventually marry. She was exactly what he was looking for, with a great personality, easy to get along with nature and so charming. He took her out to an Italian restaurant for their first date and knew that she was someone he could take home to his parents one day. After five years of dating, they were encouraged by family to publicly tie the knot and both sides sat down together to plan to become one big family. On the day of their engagement photo shoot in a park in Richmond Hill, Harish surprised Banuka. She had not been well and had been hesitant to follow through with the shoot, but was glad that Harish had motivated her to follow through with the program, especially after he proposed to her in the middle of the shoot. After she said yes, all her friends who had been hiding in the bushes jumped out to congratulate her. Everyone had later joined them at home to have dinner and drinks to celebrate their engagement. For the family and friends who were unable to make the unexpected event celebrated with them the following week. On the morning of November 1st, 2014, after the makeup artist was finished getting Banuka ready at the crack of dawn, the photographer and videographer arrived at both the groom’s and bride’s places of residence. After shared laughter and great memory captures, both parties reached the Scarborough Convention Centre where amazing appetizers were set up for guests near the receiving table. Banuka looked beautiful in a custom made multicolored Kanchipuram saree with stonework especially picked in India by her father on his travels there. 15 drummers welcomed everyone throughout the autumn-themed auspicious occasion with music while sweet notes from a flute played in the background. 15 priests also participated onstage in prayer traditions and in blessing the couple. After tying the knot, the bride changed into a blood red Kanchipuram saree from Aalayaa’s boutique with gold work and gold jewelry to match Harish who wore a simple kurta sherwani in light beige and a red shawl and pants.

Sometimes we do fall in love with the girl or guy next door. For Nisha and Sujikanth, who often found themselves bumping into each other in the same neighborhood, it did not take long for the two to become great friends and eventually a romantic couple. After years of getting to know each other and family prodding, the relationship reached new heights when Kanth decided to spontaneously whisk Nisha away to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon and arranged for a few intimate and unforgettable desert inspired photo shoots among the canyons, on secluded highways and in famous ghost towns. At the end of the shoot, the couple hiked up for their last shot atop a cliff and Kanth got down on one knee to propose to her just as the sun set overlooking one of America’s natural wonders. After the cinematic scene, the couple decided they wanted to have a grand traditional Hindu wedding and Gatsbylike classy reception in six months and hired Abi from Geetham Banquet Services to help plan the wedding and execute their visions into reality. On March 19th, 2014, the couple got married in a traditional South Indian family affair style wedding. For the bride-to-be, it was an emotional and bittersweet night at home, the morning before everything began, as she lay awake with her parents and sister, taking everything in, guests from all over the world scattered in their living spaces. The following day, they were to be married, the bride remembers the environment being chaotic but fun with traditional breakfasts and a full house. After everyone was finally ready, the parties entered the Grand Empire and found their places in the hall according to tradition. Nisha walked in wearing a yellow Pattu saree, with a checkered green and maroon and magenta border alongside her family, feminine golden statues and bridesmaids on either side, to the stage where Kanth, looking princely in a Men of India custom light beige and maroon sherwani, shawl and turban, and his loving family, stood with the beautiful custom red and gold saree from India and jewelry set that his wife was to tie the knot in. After the poojas and prayers and cultural post-tie-the-knot games such as the spousal flower garland toss, the bridal party personally fed each of their guests traditional rice and dal curry on banana leaves and did not sit down to eat until everyone else had been fed. After a long day, the couple relaxed with family and spent time with loved ones before preparing for their grand Gatsby-themed reception at the Apollo Convention Centre on Saturday March 22nd, 2014. The hall had been transformed into a dimly lit classy and luxurious ballroom with drop down chandelier-inserted golden frames and layers of candles on the main stage and a 5 layer cake by Esther Williams at the Frosted Cake Boutique in tones of gold, cream, black and red that represented the Gatsby era perfectly. The newlyweds looked elegantly stunning in their formal wedding wear. The groom wore a custom Garrison Bespoke suit with a velvet jacket and designer accessories and the bride commanded the evening in her gorgeous black blouse, bright red shawl with black embroidery, and off white skirt with black velvet roses and a red border and handpicked jewels from the south of India. Though nothing had been scheduled, certain friends and family members prepared and presented short comedic speeches and dances to honor the couple and wish them well.

Another one, the Wedding Plandroid uses a simple interface but covers everything you would need in a wedding planning app. It even has preprogramed tasks that most people will have to complete before any wedding. It’s best to test a few of these apps before you decide which one works best for you, especially as technology is constantly updated and users often notice kinks before they are able to benefit from the programs. Consider Appy Couple, an app and website combination that makes it easy to set up your own customized wedding app/site. There’s a $35 onetime fee, and then you’ll have everything you need to create a personalized digital space. All of the info about your big day can live in the app, including event timelines, the location of venues, gift registry information, options for guests to RSVP online and even shareable blurbs about VIP guests.

For some couples, it is love at first sight. For Sharanya and Suresh, who had known of each other for years through their families, but never thought they would end up together, it seemed written in the stars. Knowing that Suresh had a soft spot for Sharanya, the families encouraged him to call and ask her out and he did. On their first night out together, Sharanya, who is fond of everything-vintage and French, remembers an evening full of bouquets of Roses, surprises, and Suresh taking her out to experience some of her favourite things. She recalls how comfortable both felt with each other as if they had known each other deeply for years. Suresh did not stop there. He took great care in finding out how to capture Sharanya’s heart and then proceeded to do so. Since the couple wanted to stick to traditions, Suresh pulled out all the stops on Feb 9, 2014 to bring a digital Paris to Toronto on the night he proposed to Sharanya. Blue lighting, roses down the pathway, a projected Eiffel tower, candles, champagne, chocolates surrounded an elegant sofa in an empty warehouse where Suresh got down on one knee. Both bride-to-be and her friends who were unaware of the Parisian surprise, yet invited to celebrate post-proposal, were blown away. After some horoscope consultations, it was decided that the wedding would be held sooner rather than later on November 9 and 15 of 2014. The day of the wedding was nothing short of a royal affair. It was surreal from the moment the bride and groom entered the venue. Red velvet runners lined the gold and mahogany draped temple themed banquet hall. The groom and best man took the stage and waited for the maharani to make a grand entrance to a traditional song. In hues of gold and royal blue, Sharanya walked in wearing a sari from Aarthi Supercentre in Markham to claim her rightful throne beside her husband. After the thali was tied, Sharanya reappeared queenly with Suresh by her side, in a modest bright magenta sari and contrasting yellow gold blouse with stonework details from Aalayaa while Suresh filled out a princely made-tomatch Sherwani with bright magenta dupatta and pants. The reception, which took place the following week, had taken guests to a classy Victorian time with a minimalist black and white theme, monogrammed floors and crystal chandeliers. A suave and dimly lit cocktail lounge complete with open bars and a custom photobooth against large blown up black and white engagement photos entertained guests until curtains opened to reveal free seating for the grand finale. This was the moment Suresh had been waiting for. The emcee had everyone seated, the wedding and the reception so far had gone on beautifully without a hitch. In a Harry Rosen suit, he grabbed his wife’s hand and took the wheel of a real rickshaw and puttered out to a shocked audience. They stepped out of the unique vehicle and onto the dance floor for their first dance. After the current infamous romantic ballad by John Legend, All of Me, the couple cut an all-white traditional cake accented with flowers and lace that tasted as delicious as it looked beautiful. Speeches, slideshows and a special father-daughter dance rounded out the event with a scrumptious dinner before partying the night away.
