6 B-Metro Wishbook 2012
Every year, just about this time, it surprises me. It seems to come out of nowhere like some kind of magical train or reindeer landing with heavy feet on the roof. Yes, you guessed it. The holiday season. How does it spring up like this. Didn’t we just put the lawn mower in the back of the garage and pack up all the beach stuff, like yesterday. Now suddenly I can smell the distinctive aroma of sugar cookies baking in the kitchen. No matter how it happens, there is nothing as special as the holiday season. No matter how old I get, something magical happens right around this time of year. With this special issue of B-Metro, we thought we’d spread some of that magic around. So you hold in your hands our second annual Wish Book, a publication full of great ideas from some of Birmingham’s best retailers. We’ve also catalogued some of the great holiday and musical events going on in town in the next six weeks or so. So get ready for the approaching holidays as we toast the ones we love with gifts, music, laughter, and joy. There really is nothing like this magical time of year, so get out there and enjoy it to the fullest.

I learn to be still and focused when I’m in the hot room and I take that stillness and focus into my life after class. My family has noticed a change for the better too AND my 8-year-old daughter, Katherine, has become curious enough to come to classes with me!!!” - Mystie

Martie
knows the holidays... Martie Duncan shares some of her favorite holiday party ideas. Photo by Arden Ward
44 B-Metro Wishbook 2012
Martie Duncan’s appearance on Food Network Star in 2012 has made her media star burn that much brighter, and she has been reflecting that light back on her home state of Alabama in some very generous ways. As a wedding and party planning expert, Martie has helped plan everything from celebrity weddings to casual tailgates, big charity events, and small backyard picnics. While traveling the world, she’s helped throw great parties in just about every corner of the globe but Martie is not a professional party or wedding planner. She is simply the go-to person her friends and family call on when there is an occasion to be planned. During 20 years in the wedding business, Martie worked with the world’s best caterers, florists, designers, party planners, and stylists and she’s picked up every trick of the trade along the way. She translates these into affordable ideas for entertaining at home. Martie is currently at work on her first book and regularly makes appearances on the food show circuit where she conducts workshops on affordable entertaining. We asked Martie to share some of her best ideas for holiday entertaining. These ideas and a host of others can be found on her website, martieknows. squarespace.com
MARTIE’S BEST HOLIDAY COCKTAIL RECIPES
If you still need some ideas for your holiday gettogethers, these cocktail recipes are festive, delicious, and pretty, too! Here are some of our favorite holiday cocktail recipes... enjoy! Merry Christmas to all. PEPPERMINT BARK MARTINI: Smooth and creamy with a peppermint kick. Made with vanilla vodka, Godiva White Chocolate liqueur and creme de menthe. Decadent. Delicious. Almost dessert! HOT BUTTERED RUM: A holiday favorite: brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Oh, don’t forget dark rum. Yum. HOLIDAY DOUBLE BUBBLE: One of the easiest and prettiest drinks for the holidays. Prosecco and Italian sparkling soda. Garnish. Done! OATMEAL COOKIE MARTINI: Tastes just like a warm cookie straight out of the oven—except with a cocktail kick! BOURBON HOT TODDY: Made with a bourbon, little lemon, orange liqueur, and cinnamon, this will really warm you up on a cold night!
HOLIDAY HOT CHOCOLATE: Worth the effort. this one is even more special when you add a little vanilla vodka, your favorite bourbon, or dark rum. POMEGRANATE CRANBERRY KISS: An easy signature cocktail for your holiday party. Mix up a big batch and serve in a pitcher or dispenser. Looks beautiful and tastes wonderful. PRALINES N CREAM MARTINI: Smooth and delicious, this Southern favorite is made with praline pecan liqueur. Simple! HOT APPLE PIE TODDY: Made with Tuaca, an Italian liqueur and apple juice, this one tastes like holiday in a glass. Santa’s Cookie Workshop Party Baking cookies and cookie decorating is a timeless holiday tradition. Make it into a wonderful memory for the kids in your family. It’s a perfect holiday party theme for schools, churches, and neighborhoods. This is the perfect last minute party for kids hanging around the house, waiting for Santa to arrive. They can make their own cookies to leave for Old St. Nick and all you need to throw the party is listed below. Send an email or even call in your invitation since it is last minute during the busy holiday season. Do ask for an RSVP...you need to know how many guests so you don’t overbuy supplies. I usually bake all of the cookies in advance so the party doesn’t take all day. I’ll let each child cut out a few cookies when they arrive in their favorite holiday
PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATE
shape so there is that delicious smell of cookies baking as the party progresses. Clear off or pop up a large table and cover it with white or brown kraft paper you can get at the craft store. Line the center of the table with supplies like tubes of icing, sprinkles, candies, gum drops, etc. Make a work station for each child and write their name above it in crayon so they know where they are to design their cookies. Design a few simple cookies in advance so the children can have an example. Food and beverages should be simple. I like to offer bite size treats with a hot chocolate bar for this party. Keep it simple and self-serve so your hosting duties are easy. A few party games, caroling, a holiday movie, or a visit from Santa can keep the kids occupied while their creations dry. Make sure to have some paper bags, tin containers, Asian take-out boxes, or foil wrap available so guests can pack up their cookies to take home after the party. Peppermint Hot Chocolate Brrr... there’s a chill in the air and the holidays are right around the corner. No matter if you’re just cuddled up in a blanket watching Christmas movies or coming in from holiday shopping, make up a mug of this fast and super rich hot chocolate! Check out the variation at the end... a shot of something extra to warm you up fast! Makes 2 large mugs
2 1/2 cups milk (use whole or skim, whatever you like) 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 3 tablespoons sugar 6 squares (3 ounces) 60 % Cacao dark chocolate, chopped 1/2 teaspoon vanilla dash salt 4 peppermint candies or 2 peppermint sticks, crushed fine + 2 peppermint sticks for garnish 1/2 cup heavy cream or whipping cream
Put the candies in a plastic bag and crush them using a rolling pin or mallet. Set aside. Put the milk in a saucepan. Slowly bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat. Add the sugar and stir to dissolve. Put the cocoa in one of the mugs. Add a bit of the hot milk and stir until it becomes smooth, adding more milk to thin it out. Add it back to the saucepan. Next, add the chopped chocolate and stir until it is completely melted. Let the chocolate heat through, stirring constantly. Add the crushed candies and stir until they are melted. Pour into mugs and drizzle a little heavy cream on the top. Garnish with a peppermint stick, whipped cream, a dusting of cocoa, marshmallows, or even more crushed candies... whatever you like and your diet can afford! Variation: Add a shot of brandy, vanilla vodka, chocolate or white chocolate liqueur, coffee liqueur, or peppermint schnapps to your mug for some extra warmth!
Unique furniture, art and accessories at prices you can definitely afford. 4331 Creekside Ave, Hoover, AL 35244 205-444-0641
