DOHDLES! What is that?! Sculpting, Guessing, and Laughing Dohdles are riddles made of dough! Exercise your imagination in this artistic and hilarious sculpting and guessing game for families and parties of three to six players. Create a Dohdle by sculpting the approximate shape of an object or living thing — or of a part of an object or living thing — with the modeling clay. You don’t have to be a skilled sculptor or artist: You should actually form your Dohdle in such a way that your opponents cannot immediately recognize what it is supposed to represent. Even if you’re all thumbs when it comes to sculpting, you’ll be able to make a Dohdle that has the shape of a hotdog, a ball, a mailbox… anything! You receive points during the game if you guess the exact word that your opponent’s Dohdle represents. You also receive points if the solution to your Dohdle is neither too easy nor too difficult for your opponents to identify — ideally solved after four rounds of guessing.
During your turn, you can alternately ask two yes-or-no questions or ask for a letter of the word to be revealed to help identify another player’s Dohdle. At any time, if you think you can identify a Dohdle, throw your guessing cube in the sorting funnel: The player whose cube comes out first can guess first. Points from correct guesses move you forward around the game board, and the player who makes it around the board first wins the game! The special clay will not dry out or harden and can be used again and again. Klaus Teuber 3-6 Players 40 Min. Ages 10+ 696163

UBONGO Sprint to Solve the Puzzle
Companion app helps you learn the game, keep time, and solve the puzzles!
Ubongo is a fast-paced, addictive, and easy-to-learn geometric puzzle game. Players race against the timer and against each other to solve a puzzle of interlocking shapes. The faster you solve the puzzle, the more gems you get. The player with the most valuable gem treasure after nine rounds of solving puzzles wins! Here’s how it works: Each player receives a set of 12 polyominos — geometric shapes formed of equal-size squares joined edge to edge in different arrangements. At the start of each round, each player gets a new puzzle panel. A roll of the die determines which polyominos you must use to perfectly fill in the empty spaces on the puzzle panel. Any players who complete the puzzle within the time limit yell out “Ubongo!” and grab a gem at random from the bag. The fastest player also gets a blue gem and the second fastest an amber gem. Each gem color is worth a different amount of points. After nine rounds, the player with the most valuable gem collection wins. Download the free companion app, which helps you learn how to play the game, and includes a game timer, a solo game timer, and solution keys.

DIMENSION The Spherical, Stackable, Fast-Paced Puzzle Game! Dimension is a fast-paced, innovative puzzle game that takes place in three dimensions with 60 colorful spheres. All of the players play at the same time. Everybody tries to position the spheres on their trays to earn as many points as possible. The task cards indicate how the spheres must be placed to earn points: for example, exactly two orange spheres must be on the tray, black and blue must touch each other, and blue must not touch white. Complete these tasks while racing against the timer. You get a point for each sphere you use and a bonus token for using all ďŹ ve colors, but you lose two points for each task card you don’t follow correctly. Prove to your opponents that you are the master of multi-dimensional thinking!

LOST CITIES The Board Game The research teams are outfitted and ready to embark on their adventures to find five forgotten cities. Who will lead the way to fantastic discoveries? Each player guides a team of explorers on up to five expeditions. To advance along an expedition path, a card in the path’s colour must be played for each step forward. The card must be of equal or greater value to the player’s card previously played on that path. After playing or discarding a card, the player draws a new card. Skilled team leaders assess when to play, hold, or discard their cards to move their own teams forward while at the same time preventing their opponent teams from getting ahead.

GAMES
Points are awarded based on how far the explorers make it along their paths. Each step earns more points than the one before it, and the first three steps earn negative points. Along the way, players can increase points by finding artifacts, victory points, and shortcuts forward. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins! Explore the cutting edge of automotive technology with this futuristic car. Construct the sleek, high-tech car, and then use your tablet or smartphone to control the car’s motorised wheels and steer it in any direction. On your device’s screen, watch the car as it drives through a virtual, augmented reality cityscape. Use the free downloadable app to script a simple program that instructs your car to automatically follow a predetermined course through your city. To build your virtual city, spread the AR (augmented reality) code cards out across the floor and point your tablet’s camera at them. The app interprets the AR codes as buildings and houses so that a virtual city springs up on your tablet’s screen. Once you have built your city, you can manually steer your car through it or program a route using a special “draw and drive” function in the app. Through all of your experiments with the car, you will learn first-hand about the forward-looking technologies of driverless vehicles. Automotive engineers expect that by around 2020 it will be completely normal for some cars to drive at least partly on their own. Major car manufacturers and tech companies are already working on their own versions of the self-driving cars. You will learn about the technologies employed in autonomous vehicles, including laser detectors, GPS, radar systems, and on-board computers. Build seven models in addition to the smart car. Each of the models uses up to four electric motors, and each motor can be controlled independently with the app. The app’s programming mode allows you to switch each of your car’s four motors forward, backward, or off, in second-long increments, for up to three minutes. A full-colour, 64-page experiment manual provides assembly and usage instructions, and background information.

ROBOTICS: SMART MACHINES Programmable Robots Robotics is a vast, thrilling, and sometimes overwhelming interdisciplinary ďŹ eld involving physics, engineering, and computer science. This kit gives kids a simple, fun, and customisable introduction to robotics that lets them build eight motorised machines controlled by programs and an ultrasound

sensor. Kids code the programs using an easy, visual programming app on a tablet or smartphone, which connects to the robot models via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as sonar. It sends out sound waves, which bounce off objects. The sensor interprets the echoes returning to it, and from this detects objects in the path of the sensor. Using the app interface, you can program the robots you build to behave based on the feedback coming from the ultrasound sensor. Build a humanoid robot that walks forward on two legs and pivots to avoid
obstacles in its path. An awesome stag beetle model moves backwards or forwards in response to an obstacle, and opens and closes its pincers. Construct a funny crocodile model that wags its tail if no object is in sight, but then opens its giant jaws when an object approaches. Using an additional smartphone and tablet, you can even hack together a cute little spy-bot that roams around and streams video back to the tablet screen. A cool dualrotor drone model rotates its rotor blades 90 degrees. You can also assemble other fun robots including a robo-dog and robo-dino. After you have learned how the technology
works, you can build and program your own robots using the kit’s 194 building pieces. A full-colour, 64-page step-by-step illustrated manual helps kids assemble all of the models and teaches them about robotics in the real world. The visual programming language allows you to command the robots’ motors to move at different times, different power levels, in different directions, and in response to the data from the sensor. Requires a tablet or smartphone running iOS (iPhone 4S or later, iPad 3 or later, iPod 5 or later) or Android (Android 4.3 or later on a device with Bluetooth 4.0 support).

Gyroscopes are used in countless devices. From smartphones, tablets, and video game controllers to airplanes and space telescopes, gyroscopes perform tasks ranging from the everyday to the extraordinary. With this kit, children can explore the astonishing powers of the gyroscope by building seven motorised models, including a robot that can balance on two linear wheels and move along a tightrope! Kids will learn about the physical science principles that keep the robot balanced, making it appear to defy gravity. By constructing seven different models with the motorised gyroscope unit, young engineers can experiment with and learn about the science of gyroscopic devices and the indispensable role they play in our lives. The models include the gyroscopic robot, a balancing personal vehicle, a gyro horizon (or artificial horizon), a gyrocompass, a balancing game, a tightrope walker, and a flight simulator. At the core of these models is a unique motor-driven gyroscope. A gyroscope is a rapidly spinning wheel mounted in such as way that its axle can move in any direction. Because of the laws of physics, the gyroscope reacts to external forces differently than a non-spinning wheel would: it resists forces in certain directions. This behavior allows it to be used for all sorts of applications related to balance, rotation, and orientation. Fun, hands-on experiments with the motorised gyroscope unit make these physical laws tangible and easier to comprehend. Although gyroscopes are used in very sophisticated devices, essentially they are simple mechanical instruments. A child’s spinning toy top is a simple example of a gyroscope. A full-colour, 24-page, illustrated experiment manual provides step-bystep assembly instructions and scientific explanations. 102 building pieces.

Experiment with the metal coil spring to discover how the robot’s jumping mechanism works. See if the robot can jump over objects in an obstacle course you design for it. Learn about elasticity, potential and kinetic energy, the spring constant, cams, and linkages. Build seven other functional models using the same mechanical components — the spring, cams, and motor — to perform other tasks and demonstrate physical science principles firsthand. Construct a car that moves forward on spiral-shaped wheels. Make a spring-loaded pitching machine that repeatedly winds up and propels a ball forward using spring power. NANOTECHNOLOGY Cutting-Edge Nanomaterials Some of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in recent years involve things that are actually very, very small. The science of nanotechnology deals with the smallest structures, in the range of one to 100 nanometers in size. That’s as small as just a few atoms in a row (one atom corresponds to about one nanometer)! With this kit, the intangible, nanoscopic world becomes accessible with hands-on experiments
using both scaled-up models and real nanomaterials. Nanoparticles can be made of different materials and exist in a wide variety of forms —thin layers, tubes, balls, and tree-like structures. These particles can be coated onto surfaces, they can enhance other materials such as paint, they can be used as a delivery method for pharmaceuticals in the body, and much more. Specific applications include, for example, self-cleaning house paints and water-repellent clothes, anti-fog coatings on glasses, UV protection components in sunscreen, environmentally friendly antifouling coatings for ships (to prevent algae growth, thereby reducing fuel consumption),
antibacterial coatings for medical devices, and materials to more effectively filter dirty water. Start out by conducting experiments concerning size, scale, and orders of magnitude in the International System of Units, to get a feel for just how small a nanometer really is. Explore how charcoal is like a nanoscale sponge with filtering experiments. Conduct experiments with the hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-hating) properties of different surfaces, which illustrate nanoscale properties. Stir up some mixtures and suspensions, and then examine exotic mixtures to learn about the nanoscopic particles suspended in them. Shine a laser through a colloidal gold — a
suspension of nanoscale particles of gold! Learn about the electromagnetic spectrum, laser light, electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy to begin to grasp how we can make nanomaterials visible. Experiment with a special material that mimics the nanostructures on a gecko’s footpads that allow it to climb straight up a vertical pane of glass with ease! Ages 15+

NAME
When thinking about the safety of science kits, it is important to remember that while most science kits are children’s products, science kits are not toys for play. None of our kits are intended for children under the age of five years, and all of our science kits require the presence and supervision of a responsible parent or adult. Our instruction manuals always provide important safety advice to children, parents, and adults, as well as first aid advice when applicable.
The kits in this catalogue conform to all applicable mandatory UK & US safety standards.
