LAGOONIES The Undersea Search Game All is calm in the enchanted coral reef. The mischievous sea sprites swim and play, and tease the big ghost octopus. Suddenly, the grumpy octopus reaches out his long tentacles. He twirls around very fast, creating a whirlpool of bubbles in the reef. The sea sprites aren’t strong enough to swim against the whirlpool current. They are swept up and spun all around the fizzing foaming reef. Can you use your magical bubble goggles to find your sea sprite friends, pick them out from the look-a-likes, and bring them safely back to the hiding hole in your reef? Be careful… these slippery ghostfish can slip through your fingers. And you have to look

INGENIOUS Hexagonal Tile Game Think outside the square! Ingenious is an abstract tile-placement game in which the players take turns placing tiles in the shape of two connected hexagons into a hexagonal grid on the board. Each tile has two coloured symbols on it. Players earn points in a specific colour for each line of matching coloured symbols that they extend when they place a tile. A player’s score is equal to his or her lowest-scoring colour, not his or her highest. The game includes 120 domino-style tiles, each consisting of two hexagons connected along one side. Each hexagon has one of six coloured symbols in it, with most tiles having two different coloured symbols and some having two of the same coloured symbol. Each player has a rack with six tiles on it. During his or her turn, each player places one tile from his or her rack onto two empty hexagonal spaces on the game board. For each of the two hexagons composing this tile, the player scores one point in the hexagon’s colour for each already-placed hexagon of the same colour that radiates outward in a straight line from one of the

placed hexagon’s five sides. If a player’s score in a colour reaches 18, he or she immediately takes another turn. At the end of the turn, the player refills his or her rack to six tiles. When no more tiles can be placed on the game board or when one player scores 18 in each colour, the game ends. Players then compare their lowest scores, and whoever has the highest low score wins. Ingenious includes rules for solitaire and team play. This highly awarded, international bestseller has been redesigned with a plastic board.

UBONGO Sprint to Solve the Puzzle

Companion app helps you learn the game, keep time, and solve the puzzles!

Ubongo is a fast-paced, addictive, and easy-to-learn geometric puzzle game. Players race against the timer and against each other to solve a puzzle of interlocking shapes. The faster you solve the puzzle, the more gems you get. The player with the most valuable gem treasure after nine rounds of solving puzzles wins! Here’s how it works: Each player receives a set of 12 tiles. The tiles are polyominos — geometric shapes formed of equal-size squares joined edge to edge in different arrangements. At the start of each round, each player gets a new puzzle board. A roll of the die determines which tiles you must use to perfectly fill in the empty spaces on the puzzle board. Any players who complete the puzzle within the time limit yell out “Ubongo!” and grab a gem at random from the bag. The fastest player also gets a blue gem and the second fastest an amber gem. Each gem colour is worth a different amount of points. After nine rounds, the player with the most valuable gem collection wins. Download the free companion app, which helps you learn how to play the game, and includes a game timer, a solo game timer, and solution keys.

DIMENSION The Spherical, Stackable, Fast-Paced Puzzle Game! Dimension is a fast-paced, innovative puzzle game that takes place in three dimensions with 60 colourful spheres. All of the players play at the same time. Everybody tries to position the spheres on their trays to earn as many points as possible before the timer runs out. The task cards indicate how the spheres must be placed to earn points: for example, exactly two orange spheres must be on the tray, black and blue must touch each other, and blue must not touch white. Complete these tasks while racing against the timer. You get a point for each sphere you use and a bonus token for using all ďŹ ve colours, but you lose two points for each task card you don’t follow correctly. Prove to your opponents that you are the master of multi-dimensional thinking!

Escape Room Games for the Home EXIT: The Game is a new series of party games for up to six players that offers a unique, unforgettable gaming experience. These games allow you to bring the excitement, intensity, and team spirit of an escape room to your living room. In each EXIT game, your team starts out locked in a room. You must solve a series of riddles and puzzles in order to unlock doors and reveal new riddles. Each correct solution brings you to another riddle and eventually to freedom. The clock is ticking: You must solve all of the puzzles as fast as you can because the faster your team escapes the room and the fewer hints you use along the way, the more points you earn. Each Exit game has a different theme, and riddles that are thoughtfully integrated into the storyline. Every lock in the room is associated with a puzzle. You must solve the puzzle to obtain a three-digit code, which is entered into a special decoder disk to determine if it is correct. Hone your creative problem solving and logical thinking skills, because in the EXIT games, there is no rulebook. Your team has to discover for itself how the rooms look, what the clues are, how to decipher them, and how to escape. Can you crack the codes and manage to escape the room? Each game can be played only one time, because you markup, fold, and tear the game materials.

DOHDLES! What is that?! Sculpting, Guessing, and Laughing Dohdles are riddles made of dough! Exercise your imagination in this artistic and hilarious sculpting and guessing game for families and parties of three to six players. Create a Dohdle by sculpting the approximate shape of an object or living thing — or of a part of an object or living thing — with the modelling clay. You don’t have to be a skilled sculptor or artist: You should actually form your Dohdle in such a way that your opponents cannot immediately recognise what it is supposed to represent. Even if you’re all thumbs when it comes to sculpting, you’ll be able to make a Dohdle that has the shape of a hotdog, a ball, a mailbox… anything! You receive points during the game if you guess the exact word that your opponent’s Dohdle represents. You also receive points if the solution to your Dohdle is neither too

easy nor too difficult for your opponents to identify — ideally solved after four rounds of guessing. During your turn, you can alternately ask two yes-or-no questions or ask for a letter of the word to be revealed to help identify another player’s Dohdle. At any time, if you think you can identify a Dohdle, throw your guessing cube in the sorting funnel: The player whose cube comes out first can guess first. Points from correct guesses move you forward around the game board, and the player who makes it around the board first wins the game! The special clay will not dry out or harden and can be used again and again. Klaus Teuber 3-6 Players 40 Min. Ages 10+ 696163

WORD SLAM The Fast-Paced Word-Based Guessing Game “EAT, YELLOW, CIRCLE. Do you mean pancakes? Or pineapple rings?” “Oh wait, the CIRCLE is DIVIDED? So something that you eat that is yellow and semicircular? Uh, is it, maybe ... a banana?” “Yes, the answer is banana! One point for the Blue Team!” In Word Slam, two teams each have a storyteller. The two storytellers are given the same answer term. Playing at the same time, they must give clues to their teams so the teams can correctly guess the answer. And they must do this quickly, because they are racing the timer and each other. But it’s not that easy. Speaking and acting is absolutely forbidden for the storytellers! They must tell their stories using only 105 cards, each with

one word on it: a noun, verb, adjective, or preposition. The storyteller must be creative in using this limited vocabulary to tell the story. And the team members must think quickly and nimbly to interpret the story cards. The team that correctly guesses the answer first gets a point, and the team with the most points at the end of the game wins. It’s like charades, but instead of acting, you can only communicate with word cards! Inka and Markus Brand 3+ Players 45 Min. Ages 12+ 692674

SMUGGLERS Who’s the Best at Getting the Goods? A notorious gang of smugglers is recruiting new members. The first candidates step forward, a motley bunch indeed. Which one has the skills to become a worthy member of the gang? To determine this, the boss himself stages a smuggling contest. First the wouldbe smugglers must try to get through a hole in a fence while carrying the biggest sack of contraband possible. Then those who make it through the hole have a chance to inspect the other smugglers’ sacks that are smaller than their own or that shamefully got stuck in the hole in the fence. A role of the die determines which size hole in the fence the sack needs to fit through. The smuggling sacks are formed from a rubbery polymer putty that the players roll into balls with the contraband

pieces hidden inside. The balls are then rolled down a track towards the fence. The player’s goal is to form the largest ball that will still fit through the fence. Players who succeed in getting the largest ball through the hole in the fence can then guess the contents of the smaller balls or of balls that were too large to fit through the fence. If they guess correctly, they get to keep the contraband. The player who collects the most contraband items wins. This funny family game answers the question: Who is the sneakiest and most skillful smuggler? Klaus and Benjamin Teuber 2-4 Players 30 Min. Ages 8+ 692544

MAG-O-MAG The Magnetic Labyrinth This innovative vertical holder with interchangeable game boards and magnetic game pieces allows you to play three fun, action-packed games. This teammate must communicate with the teammate controlling the magnet and tell him or her how to move the magnet to complete the game challenge without the magnet falling off or going to the wrong spot. In the racing game, the object is speed: Which team can complete the course the fastest? But make sure you don’t crash! In the golf game, the object is precision: How many strokes does the team need to take to reach the hole? But be careful, there are traps everywhere! In the treasure hunt game, players must collect as many gems as possible in a given time. Who can amass the most valuable treasure? IMHOTEP Builder of Egypt Imhotep. The legendary architect of the Egyptian monuments. His awe-inspiring structures and brutal tactics earned him divine status among ancient Egyptians. Can you match his ruthless determination to build the most revered monuments? To do this, you will need to transport stone blocks on ships from your quarry to different construction sites. But you alone do not choose where the ships go. Your opponents have monumental plans of their own and want to prevent your success. A fierce competition for the precious stone resources plays out. Only with the right strategy and a little luck can you succeed. In Imhotep, the players take on the roles of ancient Egyptian architects. Over six rounds, they try to transport their stone blocks to end up in the most valuable positions at five construction sites: pyramid,

obelisk, chamber tomb, temple, and market. But a player can only choose one of three actions in a turn: excavate a new stone block from the quarry, load a block onto a ship, or move a ship to a construction site. From there, the massive stone blocks must be unloaded in order from bow to stern and placed on the sites in preset sequences. Depending on where the blocks end up, players earn different point values either immediately or at the end of the game. In each turn, you must weigh your options for getting your own stones into place and thwarting your opponents’ placement plans. You must get your blocks to the right places, in the right order, at the right time to be the greatest architect.

STEAM TIME Powered by Steam and Driven by Glory, An Odyssey Across the Arc of Civilisation The year is 1899. For millennia, people have shared myths of unexplained occurrences at age-old monuments around the world, such as Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt. Recently, reports of bizarre phenomena at these sites have garnered the full attention of the powers that be. In these places, spacetime is distorted. Time flows in unexpected ways. In addition, unusual crystals with supernatural properties have been discovered there. These discoveries have sparked the invention of fantastic machines that can travel through time. Now, the rapidly industrialising superpowers of the world are in a race to amass and exploit these valuable resources.

At the centre of these endeavors, the newly established Temporal Institute for Monument Exploration (T.I.M.E. for short) is sending out steam-powered airships to travel through time and space. As captain of one of these airships, you will set out to explore the temporal rifts around the monuments. Dive into the turbulent stream of time on a quest for long-lost knowledge, vanished cultures, and hidden treasures. Search for crystal deposits and use your resources — including steam, crystals, gold, and time — wisely to stay ahead of your competitors, ultimately to gain T.I.M.E.’s esteem and eternal glory. LOST CITIES The Board Game The research teams are outfitted and ready to embark on their adventures to find five forgotten cities. Who will lead the way to fantastic discoveries? Each player guides a team of explorers on up to five expeditions. To advance along an expedition path, a card in the path’s colour must be played for each step forward. The card must be of equal or greater value to the player’s card previously played on that path. After playing or discarding a card, the player draws a new card. Skilled team leaders assess when to play, hold, or discard their

cards to move their own teams forward while at the same time preventing their opponent teams from getting ahead. Points are awarded based on how far the explorers make it along their paths. Each step earns more points than the one before it, and the first three steps earn negative points. Along the way, players can increase points by finding artifacts, victory points, and shortcuts forward. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins! But the bear is right behind him, ready to stand up to these human bullies. The chances are equally balanced between the animals and the humans. In the beginning, luck runs the show. But as the hunting continues, the players must become increasingly strategic to prevail. Rudi Hoff mann 2 Players 30 Min. Ages 8+ 691837

Read the funny story of two inquisitive young engineers, Ty and Karlie, their family’s robots, Huxley and Remus. Build simple models of the boats they encounter in the story. The boats actually float on water, making for fun and easy experiments around the sink or bathtub. The Boat Engineer story centres around Huxley and Remus. Their boatbuilding adventure starts when a robotic fish they are testing goes haywire and swims away uncontrollably. Huxley and Remus build a rowboat in their effort to catch up with and capture the robotic fish. They find the rowboat is too slow, so they build a fanboat to go faster. As the story continues, the robots make their way downstream and eventually out to the ocean. Along the way, they must build new boats to solve specific problems and perform tasks. They build a sailboat, riverboat, speedboat, fireboat, tugboat, freighter, catamaran, hydroplane. From each humorous segment of their silly adventure, the robots learn something new about boats. As you follow the story, you can build models of the ten boats featured in the story. Large, colourful plastic building pieces make it easy for small hands to put the models together. An ornithopter is a mechanical aircraft that flies by flapping its wings. It imitates the flapping-wing flight of birds, insects, and bats. Build four ornithopter models including a bird, bat, butterfly, and dragonfly. The wings work like propellers to generate lift and thrust, powered by a wind-up rubber band engine. A streamlined and durable bamboo and plastic building system enables the models to be light enough to fly gracefully through the air like winged animals.

Want to see your name in lights? With this kit, you can use a cool lighting technology called electroluminescent wire (EL Wire) to make a kind of neon sign. You can write your name or any word you want! The manual will teach you how and will also explain how EL wire works.

This kit uses a “magic wand” to show the stunning power of electrostatic energy which will inflate the included objects into 3D shapes and hold them invisibly in the air! Power up the generating wand with 2x AA Batteries and hold your own “Magic” show of levitating objects. The full-colour manual teaches the user about the science behind the kit. The electrical potential is similar to that generated by the Van de Graaf Generator; an important high voltage generating device now used for accelerating subatomic particles to high speed, a useful tool for fundamental physics research.

GYROSCOPES & FLYWHEELS Gyroscopic force is a fascinating and magical phenomenon, with amazing scientific principles behind it. With the small, fast-spinning gyroscope in this kit, you can build models and perform experiments that appear to defy the force of gravity by balancing and standing upright when common sense would tell you they should fall over. Build a model of a break-dancer that uses the gyroscope to spin and balance on its head. Construct a gyroscopic vehicle that keeps its balance like a Segway but with just one wheel. Assemble a cool robot that can zoom along a thin rail on two inline wheels without falling down. The lower part of this robot is a flywheel engine — a fast-rotating, weighted wheel that stores rotational energy and drives a gearwheel that moves the model forward. Even more models can be built using the flywheel function, including a motorbike, a space car, and a trike. A simple pull of a ripcord starts the gyroscope and flywheel spinning — no batteries required! The 32-page, full-colour manual has illustrated stepby-step instructions. Ages 8+

HAPPY ATOMS

A revolutionary approach to teaching chemistry

Digital and Physical Chemistry Sets Chemistry is the science of materials, their properties, and how they react with each other. All materials are made of atoms. Why do some atoms combine with each other while other atoms do not? Because atoms just want to be happy! Of course, atoms don’t really have feelings. But they do have observable behaviours. And atoms tend to be more stable, or “happy,” when they have certain numbers of electrons whizzing around their cores. Where do they find extra electrons if they need more to be happy? From other atoms that have too many electrons, of course! When atoms share or exchange electrons to be happy, they stick together. Happy atoms form molecules! With this revolutionary approach to teaching chemistry, you can make your own happy atoms! This physical and digital system lets you discover the world of molecules in an intuitive, hands-on way. Using a set of atom models representing 16 different elements, you can assemble your own molecular models. The atoms stick together easily with magnets: metal tips on the ends of rubbery arms, which represent free electrons, snap onto magnetic bonding sites on the atom spheres, which represent empty spots for electrons in the atom’s outermost electron shell. But how do you know what the molecule you’ve snapped together is? You use the included app for iPad® and iPhone®* to snap its picture, and the app uses state-of-the-art image recognition technology to identify the molecule. The app recognises tens of thousands of molecules. It presents detailed information about 150 of the most important molecules, such as a molecule’s usage, properties, hazards, formula, and structure. The app takes you on guided quests to discover new molecules and learn about them. You can track your progress with the app, collecting sets of molecules that you have built and explored. Many people think of chemistry as complicated and hard to grasp. New technology now enables us to take this innovative approach to teaching chemistry and help make it more tangible.

NANOTECHNOLOGY Cutting-Edge Nanomaterials Some of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in recent years involve things that are actually very, very small. The science of nanotechnology deals with the smallest structures, in the range of one to 100 nanometers in size. That’s as small as just a few atoms in a row (one atom corresponds to about one nanometer)! With this kit, the intangible, nanoscopic world becomes accessible with hands-on experiments

using both scaled-up models and real nanomaterials. Nanoparticles can be made of different materials and exist in a wide variety of forms —thin layers, tubes, balls, and tree-like structures. These particles can be coated onto surfaces, they can enhance other materials such as paint, they can be used as a delivery method for pharmaceuticals in the body, and much more. Specific applications include, for example, self-cleaning house paints and water-repellent clothes, anti-fog coatings on glasses, UV protection components in sunscreen, environmentally friendly antifouling coatings for ships (to prevent algae

growth, thereby reducing fuel consumption), antibacterial coatings for medical devices, and materials to more effectively filter dirty water. Start out by conducting experiments concerning size, scale, and orders of magnitude in the International System of Units, to get a feel for just how small a nanometer really is. Explore how charcoal is like a nanoscale sponge with filtering experiments. Conduct experiments with the hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-hating) properties of different surfaces, which illustrate nanoscale properties. Stir up some mixtures and suspensions, and then examine exotic mixtures to learn

GECKOBOT Wall-Climbing Robot This astonishing wall-climbing robot has a motorised air suction system that enables it to walk vertically up and down perfectly smooth surfaces, like glass, plastic, whiteboards, and glossy laminates. The battery-powered motor drives an innovative gear system that produces a rotating motion making the legs move back and forth and up and down, mimicking a real gecko — so two of the feet are touching the wall while the other two feet are lifted off of the wall, in an alternating motion. At the same time, the gear system drives an air pump that creates a vacuum at the two feet touching the wall while blowing air outward at the other two feet. In this way, two of the feet are always holding the model to the wall, while the other two feet are pushing off and stepping forward. You can build six other models and conduct experiments with suction to learn about air pressure and the mechanical physics of this unique device. Build models of an industrial robotic arm with a vacuum suction cup gripper, crawling inch worm, smartphone holder, suction tow truck and car, ellipsograph, and suction gun. MODELS

Gyroscopes are used in countless devices. From smartphones, tablets, and video game controllers to airplanes and space telescopes, gyroscopes perform tasks ranging from the everyday to the extraordinary. With this kit, children can explore the astonishing powers of the gyroscope by building seven models, including a robot that can balance on two linear wheels and move along a tightrope! Kids will learn about the physical science principles that keep the robot balanced, making it appear to defy gravity. By constructing seven different models with the motorised gyroscope unit, young engineers can experiment with and learn about the science of gyroscopic devices and the indispensable role they play in our lives. The models include the gyroscopic robot, a balancing personal vehicle, a gyro horizon (or artiďŹ cial horizon), a gyrocompass, a balancing game, a tightrope walker, and a ight simulator. At the core of these models is a unique motor-driven gyroscope. A gyroscope is a rapidly spinning wheel mounted in such as way that its axle can move in any direction. Because of the laws of physics, the gyroscope reacts to external forces differently than a non-spinning wheel would: it resists forces in certain directions. This behaviour allows it to be used for all sorts of applications related to balance, rotation, and orientation. Fun, hands-on experiments with the motorised gyroscope unit make these physical laws tangible and easier to comprehend. The full-colour, 24-page instruction manual provides step-by-step instructions. ROBOTICS: SMART MACHINES Programmable Robots Robotics is a vast, thrilling, and sometimes overwhelming interdisciplinary field involving physics, engineering, and computer science. This kit gives kids a simple, fun, and customisable introduction to robotics that lets them build eight motorised machines controlled by programs and an ultrasound sensor. Kids code the programs using an easy, visual programming app on a tablet or

smartphone, which connects to the robot models via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as sonar. It sends out sound waves, which bounce off objects. The sensor interprets the echoes returning to it, and from this detects objects in the path of the sensor. Using the app interface, you can program the robots you build to behave based on the feedback coming from the ultrasound sensor. Build a bipedal robot that walks forward on two legs and pivots to avoid obstacles in its path. An awesome beetle robot moves backwards or forwards in response to an obstacle, and opens and closes its pincers. Construct a funny crocodile model that wags

its tail if no object is in sight, but then opens its giant jaws when an object approaches. Using an additional smartphone and tablet, you can even hack together a cute little spy bot that roams around and streams video back to the tablet screen. A cool tiltrotor aircraft model simulates vertical takeoff and landing by rotating its propeller blades 90 degrees. You can also assemble other fun robots including a robo dog and robotosaurus. After you have learned how the technology works, you can build and program your own robots using the kit’s 230 building pieces. A full-colour, 64-page step-by-step illustrated manual helps kids assemble all of

the models and teaches them about robotics in the real world. The visual programming language allows you to command the robots’ motors to move at different times, different power levels, in different directions, and in response to the data from the sensor. You can also add simple sounds to your programs. Requires a tablet or smartphone running iOS or Android®. iOS devices must support Bluetooth 4.0 and must be running iOS 8.0 or later (such as iPad® 3 or later, iPad mini™, iPhone® 4S or later, and iPod touch® 5 or later). Android devices must support Bluetooth 4.0 and must be running Android 4.4 or later.

ELECTRICITY: MASTER LAB The Physics of Electricity We encounter electricity everywhere in our lives — at home, in school, even our bodies have electric charges in them. Alternating current (AC), or electric current that cyclically changes its direction, plays a particularly important role in our world. Countless

appliances and devices, including televisions, electric heaters, desk lamps, and smartphone transformers are operated with AC. This science experiment kit offers a thorough exploration of alternating current in addition to the more commonly addressed direct current (DC), the unidirectional current from standard batteries. With this kit, you can safely experiment with the physical science theories and applications of electricity. Conduct 119 experiments to investigate electrical engineering from AC to DC. Start by exploring the basics of electric current

by building simple circuits with batteries, switches, and lights. Build series and parallel circuits as well as more complex circuits such as a traffic signal and alarm system. Experiment to observe the physical effects of electric current such as heat and magnetism. Discover electrochemistry by building a lemon battery. Play around with permanent magnets and electromagnets to learn about magnetism and its applications, such as relays and motors. Operate an electromagnetic coil, capacitor, and transformer in an AC circuit

When thinking about the safety of science kits, it is important to remember that while most science kits are children’s products, science kits are not toys for play. None of our kits are intended for children under the age of five years, and all of our science kits require the presence and supervision of a responsible parent or adult. Our instruction manuals always provide important safety advice to children, parents, and adults, as well as first aid advice when applicable.

The kits in this catalogue conform to all applicable mandatory UK & US safety standards.
