WITTMAN ESTES ARCHITECTURE + LANDSCAPE

WITTMAN ESTES ARCHITECTURE + LANDSCAPE

INSIDE OUTSIDE WIittman Estes believes in an integrated landscape+architecture vision founded on the idea that buildings and landscapes could be combined into one interconnected whole. By composing environments with livable outdoor spaces, these designs support contemporary active lifestyles that value an awareness of the outside. Blurring boundaries between buildings and gardens, the relationship between indoor and outdoor space is brought into balance. With a simple modern design sensibility, timeless landscapes can be created that enable people to be more connected with nature and each other.

LAURELHURST GARDEN Seattle, WA 2013This large scale remodel of a midcentury modern house by Ibsen Nelson opens up the living and dining areas to take full advantage of the lush landscape and views toward Lake Washington. In collaboration with mw|works, paving and decking are brought into equilibrium for indoor outdoor flow of wood and concrete surfaces on both the ground and walls. A central atrium garden has subtle Japanese influences, and the reflecting pool and fountain create a focal point for the house that can engage all the senses.

MADISON GARDEN Seattle, WA 2013-14 A landscape for a young couple who are avid gardeners and wanted a living environment that maximizes exposure to the outdoors during all seasons of the year. A living wall creates a verdant green screen, creating privacy from the street in the form of a semi-transparent growing canvas that can be curated horticulturally through the seasons to maximize variety and bring out the rich beauty of colors, textures and flowers. The major plantings are reclaimed large-scale bonsai trees from a defunct local nursery, bringing instant maturing and character to the central courtyard deck and entry walkway.

BAINBRIDGE GARDEN Bainbridge Island, WA 2011 A courtyard garden on Bainbridge Island is enclosed by double sided cedar screens, gently filtering views and creating privacy from the street. An intimate dining space is created for small parties, and a blend of hard and soft surfaces make distinct spaces for gathering and walking. Custom precast pavers are offset to recall an informal path on the beach.

Matt Wittman, AIA LEED AP Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Matt studied and worked in landscape architecture and planning before receiving his Master of Architecture in 2003 from UC Berkeley, where he was awarded the Gerson Prize for Design Excellence. Working in California and Latin America, Matt was inspired by the clean simplicity of courtyard houses, where abundant windows and open floor plans expand interior spaces and bring the outdoors in. His work continues the modernist tradition of integration with nature and doing more with less. Prior to founding Wittman Estes, Matt worked with some of the world’s top landscape firms, and was an architect with the acclaimed office of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson where he was a designer for landscapes, houses, apartments, student residences, and the chair for the Strategic Planning Initiative for R+D and Design. Matt is currently a visiting critic at the University of Oregon and University of Washington Departments of Architecture.
