Summertime is funtime in Sapulpa

Easy or Active there’s fun for all

Summertime and the living can be either easy or active in Sapulpa. For chilling out, enjoy the views at Hollier Park and the woods of Kelly Lane. On a more active level, hit the fairways, cast a lure, or go to a drive-in movie –just a few of the many summertime and funtime opportunities in Sapulpa.

The number of cars traveling on Route 66 and stopping in Sapulpa are indicative of the number of vacation and staycation attractions that are growing Sapulpa’s reputation as a destination rather than a “fly over” point on the Mother Road.

For the active minded there are bountiful opportunities at Sapulpa’s eight parks, two lakes, a pool/aquatic center, recreation center and sports fields totaling more than 325 acres. (Turn to page 22 for highlights and activities from playgrounds to pickleball at Sapulpa’s parks.)

For the angler visiting or living in Sapulpa, a visit to Sahoma Lake is in order. This 340-surface acre body of water’s recreational choices include tent camping, RV camping, an indoor fishing dock (heated in winter if your funtime extends to the colder months), an ADA accessible fishing dock, and covered picnic areas.

Stop by the Sahoma Bait and Concession Store for indoor restrooms, live bait, lures, food, and beverages, as well as city permits for fishing (cash or check, $5 for a day pass). Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, perch, blue gill and redear perch are caught in the Pretty Water/Sahoma area. (Sahoma Lake is adjacent on the northeast to Pretty Water Lake.)

If hitting a dimpled spheroid is more your style, Sapulpa’s municipal golf course—Rock Creek Golf Course on Route 66—should be on your “must” list. An 18-hole layout with a course rating of 72.4 and a slope rating of 128, plays 6,708 yards from its blue (championship)

Meanwhile, have a ball at Sahoma Lanes—a bowling emporium that does not neglect the family. Youngsters can enjoy learning and enjoying bowling on bumper lanes that keep balls out of the gutters and the smiles on faces of small children.

Twenty lanes and a 100% smoke-free environment make Sahoma Lanes a popular summertime and anytime Sapulpa spot. Plus, Saturday nights feature Cool Cosmic bowling with great music turned up, lights turned down, and special lighting effects turned on. It’s like a nightclub with ten pins and balls with holes.

In addition to shopping in boutique shops and antique malls in Sapulpa’s revitalized downtown, there are contemplative places to visit. Two notables are the Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum in the decommissioned 45th Army Reserve Armory. (A new 7,000-square foot expansion project is starting in 2023.) A visit there (plan on more than a quick walkthrough!) finds custom and vintage vehicles, car memorabilia, historic Route 66 displays and an area dedicated to the military.

More than a park, this property is an e perience!

With events, food trucks, games, a dog park, and community gatherings, this is a cutting-edge, multi-purpose space for the entire community! When completed, will also have an amphitheater, a bridge to Kelly Lane, public restrooms, and a pavilion!

A second stop is the Sapulpa Historical Society and Museum. This is a remarkable revelation for visitors who might expect to pick up a brochure or two, and see some “historical” knick-knacks on display. What visitors find is a 3-story, fascinating and well-curated series of displays, dioramas, and historical memorabilia that leads one to understand how Sapulpa grew from

Chief Sapulpa’s trading post, to the thriving city it is today.

Speaking of history—stroll down Route 66 (which is also Dewey Avenue) and stop at any one of the 18 historic buildings—point your cell phone at the QR and see when the building was built and what businesses and/or services once occupied that particular address. And when the evening comes, and cooler breezes begin to fill the summer air—there’s that blast from the past—the TeePee Drive-In Movie Theater. Hop in your

All this came to an end in 1916 when Mr and Mrs JF Bell purchased the building to operate their clothing store. The buildings name was changed at this time to the Bell building, possible because of the poor reputation it had because of the activities of its previous owners. Bell operated his clothing store in this location until 1932 when he closed this location and opened the Bell Tailoring company on south Water street.
