THESIS STATEMENT 2|
Minneapolis, Minnesota is a dense urban city, rich in culture. Various performance venues, creative schools, art museums, galleries, studios and artist residences are sprinkled throughout the city. Unfortunately, the majority of this creative infrastructure exists in the neighborhoods and communities outside the downtown area. Providing a highly creative, multifunctional space for artists within the downtown limits will foster growth in the artist communities and encourage new industry to enter downtown Minneapolis. My thesis, The Minneapolis Cultural Incubator, provides a place where all types of artists can develop their growing talents and interests in the arts. This facility will act as an education incubator and community center for anyone looking for inspiration, guidance and resources to complete their work in all facets of the arts. This thesis also explores how architecture acts as a functional catalytic mechanism for human interaction and community growth.

SITE
The site for the Minneapolis Cultural Incubator is located on the North Eastern side of downtown Minneapolis adjacent to Gold Medal Park on the corner of 11th avenue and 2nd avenue. This site lies within The Historic Mill District of Minneapolis. The Mill district, once the powerhouse of the Minneapolis Milling Industry, has re-emerged as the cultural center of Minneapolis. Multiple housing complexes and cultural institutions like the Guthrie Theater and the MacPhail Center for Music are making this area a vibrant cultural district on the Western bank of the Mississippi river. Ample access to green space, direct adjacency to the Minneapolis Greenway system, public transportation and the downtown center make this site a perfect place for a community of artists to develop their talents.

ANALYSIS
BUILDING DESIGN 10 |
The design of the Minneapolis Cultural Incubator attempts to bleed the boundary of this site with the adjacent Gold Medal Park. Large parallel limestone walls derived from the rhythm of the park are the structural and architectural expression while providing mechanical shafts for housing HVAC an and mechanical systems. This wall design provides large uninterrupted spaces which allow variation in program uses. All of the public functions exist on the 1st and basement level. The natural slope of the site from South to North allows natural light into all habitable spaces within the incubator. A 42 space underground parking allows guests the opportunity to attend functions at the incubator while avoiding the harsh weather conditions Minnesota is accustomed to. The housing bar located on the West side of the sites houses 30 1 bedroom artists units. Each unit has views towards the Guthrie Theater and Gold Medal Park overlooking the river.
