Assignment #10
Assignment #10: In a 1-2 page paper, explore the cautions when purchasing supplements Read pages 222-234 about labels, quick fixes, the supplement industry and your beliefs. done What is the most important thing you learned about the controversy about supplements? One important thing I learned in the section is that multivitamins have not been proven either way with regards to their ability to improve health, with the exception of fish oil and Vitamin D. The controversy lies around the “insurance” of taking a vitamin supplement, which is better than nothing. What is your own opinion about multi-vitamins? I get multiple view points on multi-vitamins. My family doctor is always recommending them, yet it seems like the health type books, like this one, find multivitamins to be a waste of money, if we are eating the right combination of foods each day. I don’t believe multi-vitamins are essential if we are eating the right foods. However, I do recognize that there are some vitamins and minerals that I don’t currently have in my diet, so at the very least my body will absorb some of it when I take the vitamin pill. Was there any new information in the section on supplements that worries you as a concerned consumer?
•
There’s no evidence that vitamin C actually improves the immune system.
•
The FDA only tests a small percentage of companies producing multivitamins
•
“Proprietary blend” is a fancy way of saying that the company doesn’t want to list the actual ingredients.
•
Lead has been found in ginseng supplements and Little Critters children’s vitamins
•
What are your personal must haveʼs from this section?
The main must have that I am taking from this section is to not waste my time and money on multivitamins, however, a good Vitamin D supplement and taking fish oil rich in omega 3’s are needed to support the body and the brain effectively.
