Assignment #13

Assignment #13: (Required for 400 and 500 Level) Create lesson plans that you can share with your students about the effects of sugar, soda pop, or French fries. The lessons should be able to be incorporated into your subject matter. Detail the plans. Then conduct a follow-up activity where you can measure the effectiveness of your teaching. Share the lessons and the responses of the students with your instructor in a 2-3 page paper. Send to instructor: bbbrain@comcast.net. Subject line to read ʻHappinessʼ #13 Intro This was a little more complicated as I teach at the college level and there is not a lot of wiggle room for my students. I have a friend, however, that teaches middle school that was interested in trying the experiments with her 8th grade science class, so I gave this lesson plan over to her and am sharing the results and feedback here in the assignment. Lesson Plans Soda pop Experiments Objective: To discover the effects of soda pop on the body and determine whether this is a substance you still want to consume. Lesson 1: Introduction 1. o

Set up a data collection table for 1 weeks worth of observation.

o

Write up your findings to present to the class

Lesson 3: Research 6. With a team of 3, develop a powerpoint (Assignment 5) that includes the following topics: o

Brief history of how soda pop was made (3-5 slides)

o

The soda pop industry (3-5 slides)

o

Effects of soda pop on people’s health (3-5 slides)

o

Extra (extra credit or if there is an extra team member)> survey 35-50 people on what they drink and what their views are on soda pop. (2-3 slides)

7. Present findings to the class in a short 10 minute presentation. Lesson 4: Conclusion 8. Fill out the “L” on the KQL chart 9. Post survey and reflection (Assignment 6)

Feedback The feedback that I got back from the class was interesting. Many thought it was cool to watch the videos, they liked the research project, and were fascinated or grossed out by the chicken bone experiment. The overwhelming choice on the post survey was sometimes, with students

offering that they will try not to drink so much soda pop, but that sometimes it’s the only thing to drink, so they are choosing to drink it. If I were to do more follow-up with this activity it would be to maybe do the hardboiled egg in fluoride lab that shows how fluoride protects our teeth. However, I do feel that students are at the very least more aware and may at least think first before just reaching for a soda pop if they have other beverages to choose from.
