Assignment #9

Assignment #9: In a 1-2 page paper, explore how to debrief the new information about foods Read pages 122-151 to connect what you have learned about food, happiness and how to get started. done Check out the section on label decoding pages 144-148. What was new information for you and how can this help you get realistic information about what you are buying in the grocery store? I have to say that I was disappointed to learn that many of the terms that I thought were “healthy” were not. Words such as natural, organic, made with real fruit or wheat, or even high in fiber, really didn’t accurately explain the processed and lack of nutritional value of the food. Knowing the real terms to be looking for will significantly help me with making good food choices. I have seen all these labels before, but have not really given much thought to the terms. In fact, I thought terms like “grass fed” and “free range” were just gimmick labels to draw people in to buy them, as they are generally more expensive than their poorer quality counterparts. In the section on stocking and shopping your kitchen, discuss the personal improvements you can make in your diet or food choices. To improve my diet and food choices, I plan to follow the two week plan outlined on page 149. In this plan I will begin to eliminate processed foods, add some fat back to my diet to balance it out, eat fish more often, add in more fresh produce from the local farmers markets, focus more on the nutrient value of the food rather than just counting calories (this will be a new experience for my family and I, thus it will probably be one the areas that takes the longest to figure out), ditching soda and juice will not be hard as we gave up the high fructose corn syrup drinks a long time ago.

The Top 100 reasons to avoid processed foods scattered throughout each chapter. Of the ten listed in this section, which ones will have the most profound effect on your personal idea of healthy eating? #75 the healthier versions of processed food are really no better than their counterparts. #73 diacetyl used for microwave popcorn has been linked to lung disease Send to instructor: bbbrain@comcast.net.
