EXTERIOR CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT “Purposeful living has already been linked to other aspects of wellbeing, like a longer life, lower risk of disease, better sleep and healthier behaviors.” -MacMillan, Amanda. “People Age Better If They Have a Purpose In Life.” Time Magazine, August 16th, 2017.
Purposeful Design for Purposeful Aging is a project born from a multidisciplinary studio at Iowa State University that focuses on the concept of aging in place as well as building empathy for those in the later stages of life. Every person wakes up in the morning with a purpose. For some it is their careers, others their family, and others it may be a beloved hobby. Regardless, having a purpose throughout the entirety of a life is necessary for happiness and health. The exterior elements of this project aim to allow an aging community the opportunity to maintain their purpose through a variety of opportunities that are that are socially oriented in their most basic essence: gardening, cooking, play, communication, etc.

DESIGNING WITH SOUL IN MIND Drawing by Matthew Cramer. This continuing care residential community project born is derived from a multidisciplinary studio at Iowa State University that focuses on the concept of aging in place as well as building empathy for those in the later stages of life. As a collaborative effort, our team identified that most CCRC’s aim to promote the body and mind- but what about the ambiguous qualities of life we cannot measure with qualitative data? We defined this as the soul. We then dove into how to design with soul and happiness in mind for tenants of future CCRC’s. To do this, design with mobility, community orientation, serenity, and biophilia in mind is critical at all scales regardless of discipline.

EXISTING CONDITIONS 1 The Santa Fe Commons Park was first familiar to me as a neighborhood park and project proposal during my time in the Kansas City area. In my last landscape architecture studio at Iowa State, I revisited the site as my final site design completed during my collegiate career. The park is the lone neighborhood green space in an area that is experiencing rapid redevelopment, with nearly 700 new apartments within a 1/4 mile of the site. The design created focuses on various forms of play and offers geologic and historical references to Johnson County Kansas.

The South Downtown Development, nicknamed “SODO”, is a mixed-use redevelopment project for the city of Ames, Iowa. A central shopping corridor runs perpendicular to Duff Avenue - a main thoroughfare in the city. Unlike any existing space in Ames, the corridor is anchored by a unique park space that focuses on outdoor activity and the embracement of outdoor rooms resonates throughout the development. Multiple forms of residential properties surround the commerical properties, and all are within walking distance of the proposed shops.

DETAIL OF JEFFERSON CITY PARKS SIGNS NOT TO SCALE
Community Park is an example of work I completed while at Landworks Studio. This park project is located in a historically underserved area of Jefferson City, and is the first of ten complete park renovations to happen in Jefferson City. Community Park’s design development phase was completed upon my arrival at Landworks Studio, but I was fortunate enough to join the studio and work on the entire construction document set. This set ranged from material, layout, planting plans, to sections and details.

Planting A Prized Community was a collaborative project that focused on uniting the Iowa State Fairground’s community. The design presented comprises of two separate plazas that can be used as outdoor classrooms for the elementary school across the street. This learning space also features a community garden in which residents of the neighborhood can teach children how to grow and care for vegetables and other crops, a skill many kids do not have in today’s society. This theme of production and a “blue ribbon”, relate immensely to the Fair.

Chronicle Park is a vision of restoration, rehabilitation, and recreation for the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. A site that was once known as the Agriculture Street Landfill, but today holds the title of the Gordon Plaza Neighborhood- an environmental justice issue and superfund site. Chronicle Park was a group collaboration in recognizing the major issues on site, remediating and rehabilitating the land, and creating a place for future human use that would act as a healing mechanism for those afflicted.

VIEW OF BACKYARD AMENITIES FACING NORTHWEST The Boyd Residence, is an example of my work completed while at Ted Lare Design Build Inc. Very little was present on the property and the site was in dire need of retaining features on each side of the newly built home. The family desired patio space and a fire pit to entertain guests, as well as foundation plantings, and suggestions for tree plantings. Plant material was chosen based on multi- seasonal longevity. The design provides ample room for yearlong activity and entertainment space for the Boyd Family, while meeting all needs and desires the family had from the original client meeting.

The selected graphic examples on these pages include other skillsets and representations on projects that did not make my shortlist of projects to show today. However, these drawings are worth exhibiting to demonstrate other conceptual ideas and rendering skills I possess. These drawings are a combination of hand renderings, SketchUp models, and Photoshop abilities. Projects shown include a sprayground concept built around the Wizard of Oz, a monument sign, a rendering of an amphitheater in park space, plaza space, and residential design.
