Last Year As a measure of success of last year Carnival, all event programmes sold out by the afternoon, catering stalls sold out by the evening, and the activity in the park attracted over 2000 attendees throughout the day!
Thousands of people lined the streets for the Bath Carnival, and they did not just watch performers, they joined in the dancing and drumming. There was a real party atmosphere as scantily-clad Samba dancers strutted their stuff Rio-style along the Georgian streets. Drinkers outside the Boater pub in Argyle Street looked bemused as, following a few post-rugby pints, beautiful samba dancers in bikini- style costumes jittered past them, displaying a lot of naked and well- toned, tanned flesh. It was like Rio comes to Bath, but a few goose bumps were spotted among the bikinis as the weather suddenly turned wet and windy. Drummers from Bath Samba followed, along with a float from Bridgwater Carnival carrying schoolgirls singing songs from hit musical TV show Glee. The carnival began with a festival in Sydney Gardens with bands, dancing and activities for children. Dignitaries including Mayor of Bath, Councillor Cherry Beath, and chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council Martin Veal fronted the carnival parade on an open top tourist bus. Cherry Beath said: “I really want to endorse this kind of fun event, it is very good for Bath, and it is a fantastic effort by a small number of people. Organisers said it was a great success this year, with more and more people turning out on the streets .
Press Release Spread the word The Bath Carnival 2015 project has begun!
Drumming, costume making and dance workshops will be coming to schools and community groups across Bath this summer! The Carnival takes place on Saturday 11th July and endorses the theme ‘Creatures, Colours and Communities’. The event has grown since the Paralympic Celebrations 2012, in which Bath played a major part as one of the host cities. Last year the Carnival took on a much bigger format and this year the Carnival promises to be more spectacular than ever. Once again Bath will be flooded with colourful performances from all over the country. The Carnival day kicks off with a ‘party in the park event’ in Bath Recreation Ground, followed by a spectacular parade through the city. Robbie Verrecchia, Project Coordinator, said “we were so happy with the turnout at last year’s event and we received a lot of very positive feedback. This year we want to encourage more families to sign up and get involved in the carnival procession. The aim is to put on a street performance that demonstrates the talent and creativity that exists in Bath. Children, teenagers and adults are all invited to join the party.” The carnival team is currently looking for local dance and music groups to come forward.
The event is partly inspired by Rio Carnival where the whole community come together to represent their favela/shanty town, perform music and dance in the famous Carnival stadium. Now the people of Bath will have the same opportunity to celebrate their own community as well as the wider city. Bath has been split into 5 different zones and each area has been allocated a colour and a Brazilian creature. The concept will be brought to life during the Carnival by using the performance of costume, colour and choreographies to show off the talent represented by each community. The team is offering an open invitation for local groups and schools to take part in the Carnival, and for local businesses to sponsor the event. Visit www.bathcarnival.co.uk for more information.
In the Press “Samba provided the musical backdrop to the Brazil World Cup and will once again be at the heart of Bath Carnival in August. Here the man behind the two-week festival, Robbie Verrecchia, explains how a teenage trip to the slums of Rio de Janeiro transformed his view of the music and made determined to bring its community-bonding power to the city” - Bath Life Magazine, Helen Keatin.
