orn and raised in New York, Joe Marino is a classically trained painter as well as a professional graphic designer. A NYC graduate from Pratt Institute of Art and Design with a degree in illustration, Joe is the consummate visual artist with over 10 years of professional experience. He has painted murals for both state funded agencies and small businesses as well as a plethora of pieces for printed media where he continues to be in high demand amongst professional companies. With his extensive knowledge of light and color, Joe has transferred his process to digital painting where he surpasses his contemporaries in this field backed by a superior understanding of the art form from using traditional mediums. Joe is also a supernal graphic designer and currently works on several national publications and book titles for the Salvation Army. His responsibilities include page layout and

design, photo restoration and retouching, studio photography, and corporate identity work. Joe is masterly skillful with the entire Adobe Creative Suite software programs and is quick to produce contemporary, bold, and creative art and design. 125th Anniversary Concert

he New York Staff Band first in Carnegie Hall in Novembe one year after the famed concert ve to the public. Since 1892, The Salv has held multiple celebrations in hall. Throughout more than a cent gatherings, the NYSB featured as musical group. officer–leaders who learned responsibility, discipline, cooperation, and focus on mission while pursuing excellence in musical ministry. In The Proclaimers, I was able to report that by 2007 nine members of the NYSB had served as national commanders; 26 reached the rank of Commissioner; and one, John Allan, served as Chief of the Staff for the international SA, the second highest rank, just below General. A large proportion of the band’s roster through the years has been of officer rank, and a large number of these officers held major administrative positions: divisional commanders, Territorial Headquarters department heads, and major executive positions. We must not forget how many became superb corps officers, divisional youth secretaries, and a wide number of other key leadership positions. Of course, there are some amusing stories connected with the interaction of red with blue! During the 1982 World Tour on one of the flights, when the SA officers in the band were upgraded to business class, the soldiers in the band were not pleased! No doubt someone along the way was trying to be nice. I recall times at commissionings, which the band has played for since its first year, that the band could not restrain itself when one of its former members marched

across the stage to receive an appointment—and the band gave that officer an unexpected salute— sometimes rowdy, sometimes comic, always exuberant—as they honored their former colleagues who now took up their ordained ministry. I close this chapter with an interview held with Commissioner James (Jim) Knaggs on December 10, 2011. Jim and Carolyn Knaggs currently serve as the SA’s top leaders in the Western Territory of the United States. His tenure of the band is typical of SA officers selected to be in the group, service divided into two periods totaling six years: #1 January 1987–June 1989, while Assistant Territorial Youth Secretary, solo cornet and the solo horn, replacing Lt. Colonel Al Avery.Tours included 100th Anniversary and Far East (Pacific Bridge). #2 July 1992–August 1996, while Territorial Youth Secretary and then Evangelism and Corps Growth Secretary, fluglehorn. Tours included Australia. Holz: You came into the band as an officer. What were your observations, your feelings about the interaction between officer members and soldier members when you were in the band? ment to the NYSB a dream come true. I vividly recall my audition with Deputy BM Ron Waiksnoris and BM Brian Bowen (I was never more nervous!). Ron was very encouraging, the tour was looming, they needed a player. They put up a very difficult piece, especially in range—I did not get one passage correctly and Brian suggested an alternate fingering—“Now Jim, try that again with this fingering.” I did as he said, it worked, and I got the spot. Seriously, I felt it a great responsibility, and the executive officer, Frank Linsell, I think impressed that on me. I saw officer–members like Al Avery, Norm Voisey, Tom Mack, Ben Bulla, Chuck West—men of high integrity, who worked hard and had proven their worth … I modeled myself after them. The maintaining of a standard of excellence from all members of the band—and especially officers—in areas beyond musical excellence is vital. As an officer I needed to be at my best and the opportunities came, yet under pressure, to do your very best. Everything afterwards that I have done within the SA was affected by that expectation to do the very best. You find you have to defend the band too (as not everyone agrees with band ministry) and so you become The Red and the Blue

Secular tunes and styles also abounded. The huge hall was soon filled, and the band was greeted with great enthusiasm as they came on stage. During the concert Bandmaster Waiksnoris would recognize the large group of NYSB alumni who had gathered for the concert, along with former staff bandmasters such as Vernon Post and Derek Smith. In addition to the commissioned composers, who were all present, the SA musical world was represented by such key leaders as Staff Bandmaster William Himes of the Chicago Staff Band and Nick Simmons–Smith, territorial music secretary, USA South. And that is just a beginning list of “luminaries” in the hall that night—see

In 1904, for example, they backed up National Commander Frederick Booth–Tucker under a large canvas tent at 57th and Broadway in New York City just a few blocks away from Carnegie Hall! That band drew large crowds by featuring popular songs of the day. Adaptability and flexibility have been hallmarks of NYSB musical

As a composer I’ve written several pieces for the NY staff band. The premieres and performances have always been of a very high caliber. Most importantly the band has an enthusiasm for the music they play. Its that spark that composers look for that takes their music and lifts it off the page. I was extremely honored when Ron Waiksnoris asked me to compose a new work for the band’s 125th year concert celebration at Carnegie Hall. The band was certainly up for that evening and not only delivered a wonderful performance of my piece but played all the works on the program with flair and precision. s this book has been taking shape, the band has had one of the busiest schedules in its history, not surprising for its 125th season. While the March 22–25 Carnegie Hall and Future All– Stars Weekend are discussed in Chapter 2, here are a just a few highlights either completed or upcoming in this anniversary year: World Interfaith Harmony Week 2012: The band played a key role in a service in The United Nations General Assembly Hall on February 7, 2012. The three–hour event was entitled “Common Ground for the Common Good” and run by the Office of the President of the 66th U.N. General Assembly. Classics like Ballantine’s Joyful, Joyful and Kippax’s Golden Jubilee lent a festive glow to the final moments of the event that included so many international organizations, charities, and societies dedicated to pursuing peace and understanding. The 125th recording Pressing Onward was produced by SP&S—World of Brass, and contained both much new music written for the Carnegie Hall concert and classic works of SA literature. Summer events included the Commissioning Weekend, with the annual Star Search events, and Old Orchard Beach Camp Meetings. At OOB, the NYSB and International Staff

Territorial Worship Arts Convocation

It’s a pleasure to have our own territorial leaders, Commissioners Lawrence R. and Nancy A. Moretz, join us for the Worship Arts Convovation. The story of Larry and Nancy is really the story of God’s grace in the lives of two ordinary people. By age 9, Pennsylvania native Larry was already sure that God had called him to be a Salvation Army officer. He declared so and spent the next 10 years preparing himself to enter the SFOT in New York, which he did in 1962. On Aug. 20 of that same year, 17–year–old Brooklyn–born Nancy felt a sure calling from God to be an officer. Ten days later, her application was accepted and approved and she was sent off to training on Labor Day with the warning, “For the next two years, don’t you dare leave that school and come back!” She never did! And so, God, with His wonderful sense of humor, brought together two “Heroes of the Faith”—one well prepared; the other, well, not prepared at all! They were commissioned and ordained in 1964 and were married July 24, 1965. Their romance with each other and The Salvation Army has lasted for more than 37 years! Larry developed many of his leadership skills in the Boy Scouts. He reached the Eagle rank with two palms; was the first Salvation Army General’s Scout in the U.S., served as scoutmaster while an officer/soldier at the Kearny, N.J., Corps; and later served as the national liaison officer for The Salvation Army with the Boy Scouts. He has studied at Pittsburgh University, New York’s Hunter College, and Union Theological Seminary with a focus on psychology and sociology; he also took advanced studies in church growth at Fuller Theological Seminary and has a keen interest in cultural anthropology.

NEW YORK STAFF BAND NYSB HISTORY The New York Staff Band represents the finest in Christian brass band performance. Holding the distinction of being the first ‘staff band’ in Salvation Army [SA] music history, the NYSB meets the challenge of maintaining the highest standards of musical practice and Christian ministry expected of such a model group. When the band released its first 33-rpm “long–play”’ [LP] back in 1957 under Staff Bandmaster Richard Holz, it was heralded as “America’s Foremost Brass Band.” The liner notes stated boldly: “From the ‘greatest city in the world’ comes one of the greatest bands of the world. The description of the band by a leading New York music critic over 70 years ago—

“amateur musicians who play like professionals”—can easily be underscored and endorsed in the second decade of the 21st century. The NYSB has been and continues to be a trailblazer in SA and brass band music making. The band’s corporate attitude is not “professional” in the modern sense of that word. Rather, while truly outstanding in performance, their approach is that of the “amateur” in its original sense—people who love what they pursue in art, rather than an approach to their music as a “job.” It is worth emphasizing here that throughout its illustrious career, the NYSB has been and continues to be a fully volunteer musical organization. Each member gives freely of their time and effort while in the band, all in addition to their regular “day job.” The band continues to be motivated by their love of Christ, the essential ingredient in potential staff bandsmen when the group first formed under Commander Ballington Booth in the spring of 1887. That motivation they link to their desire and their calling to lift high the Gospel message. As I have

studied and written in detail about this band for almost three decades—its music, its leaders, its personnel, its service record—I can make such assertions with assurance and in doing so transcend platitudes. This band focused on Christian mission does not get bogged down in matters of protocol, social status, or the latest fad. The NYSB is just as comfortable playing at an Adult Rehabilitation Center or local SA community center as it is at a fancy dinner honoring donors to the SA, or giving sacred concerts in some of the world’s finest venues and with the finest musicians. Their music making serves as an arm of the Salvation Army’s compassionate ministry while keeping true to the highest purposes of sacred music— giving praise and glory to God. For those interested in the wider impact of this band in places where the band proclaims the Gospel, this selective listing of famous locations where the NYSB has featured—in several, multiple times—can provide an encapsulation of their global impact. ommissioner Barry C. Swanson has been appointed Territorial Commander and Commissioner Sue Swanson Territorial President of Women’s Ministries for the USA Eastern Territory as of February 2013. As Territorial Commander, Commissioner Barry Swanson is the administrative and ecclesiastical leader of The Salvation Army in 10 Eastern states plus Puerto Rico, with headquarters in West Nyack, N.Y. The territory includes more than 1,600 active and retired officers, 369 corps, and more than 1,000 other centers of operation. Commissioner Barry Swanson, a native of Chicago, attended Northern Illinois University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing. In 1975 he married Sue Miller and they entered the College for Officer Training in 1976, being commissioned as officers in 1978. Lieutenants Barry and Sue Swanson were appointed to corps work in Michigan and continued in this sphere of ministry for 12 years.

In 1990 Commissioner Swanson attended The Salvation Army’s International College for Officers (ICO) in London, England. Commissioner Sue Swanson had a similar opportunity to grow in her faith in Christ with other officers at the ICO in 2000. Both testify to

the truly enriching experience that being a delegate at the ICO affords. Captains Swanson were first appointed to the Heartland Divisional Headquarters in the USA Central Territory in June 1990, followed by another corps appointment prior to becoming the divisional leaders of the Heartland Division in August 1995, with promotion to the rank of Major. The Swansons’ officer experience was further widened in July 1999 when they were appointed to Territorial Headquarters in Chicago, with promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. In 2001 Lt. Colonel Sue became Territorial Candidates Secretary, a role she found particularly fulfilling. This was followed by an appointment in July 2006 to USA National Headquarters in Alexandria, Va.—Lt. Colonel Barry Swanson as National Chief Secretary and Lt. Colonel Sue Swanson as National Secretary for Women’s Ministries. A year later and promoted to the rank of

Commissioner, the Swansons were appointed to International Headquarters (IHQ) in London, where Commissioner Barry Swanson became International Secretary for the Americas and Caribbean Zone, while Commissioner Sue Swanson was appointed as Zonal Secretary for Women’s Ministries. Just one year later, in October 2008, Commissioners Swanson returned to the USA to assume responsibilities as Territorial Leaders of the USA Central Territory. In addition being appointed Territorial President of Women’s Ministries, Commissioner Sue was given the additional role of Territorial Ambassador for Prayer. In May 2010 the Commissioners returned to IHQ as Chief of the Staff and World President of Women’s Ministries, respectively. As Chief, Commissioner Barry Swanson was second–in–command of the worldwide Salvation Army and chief administrative officer for The Salvation Army’s IHQ. The Swansons are parents to four adult children: Joan Kurtz, married to Patrick; Will and Chrissy Swanson, who have two daughters, Luella and Martha; Michael, who is married to Kristina Bonesteel; and Andrea Strand, who is married to Colin.
