Malaysia

Foreword Malaysia is a beautiful country. My two week experience involved travelling between Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, Penang, Perhentian Island, Taman Negara and Malacca, engaging with Malaysian culture and attitudes to build an understanding and respect of the places I would be documenting and the people I would be living amongst. This time in Malaysia was relatively brief but importantly fast paced. Without a given content to focus my practical experiments on, the experience was one of discovery. Relying on my instincts to guide the route my investigation took. I was interested by the way the people fitted into their surroundings; the culture, the location, the attitudes and mannerisms. This structured my approach and bought consistency to my photography. Unlike my time in India I was more patient with my documentary photography, picking up on moments of interest through heightened vigilance rather than chasing them down; interfering less with the moment I’m trying to seize. As a result I consider the images are more summative, more representative of the culture and place and of my experience, more successful. They’re viewed from the perspective of an onlooker, detached from physical engagement with the photographs subject to aid in making the imagery as true to life as possible. The following photographs were selected from a larger collection to present my experience of Malaysia in an honest light, to show you the Southeast Asian country with no preconceptions or influential bias.
