SPOKE KEY TOOL
Companies often promote their goods or services through exhibitions and mail-shot campaigns, which aim to target large numbers of potential clients or customers, in the hope of gaining positive business leads from, realistically, a relatively small proportion of the target group. They employ a wide variety of strategies to gain the attention of their target group(s), and we will focus on a small free gift which is often associated with such promotions. Typically, these will be a low-cost, often useful item which is readily associated with the company or its products. Increasingly due to the current environmental awareness, these may re-use items that would normally be disposed of or use recycled materials directly in their manufacture.
Scott Sports new and innovative spoke key tool allows for easy adjustment of bike spokes. Using inspiration from the Scott logo we have designed a desirable and functional widget. The aluminium sacrificial insert provides strength and durability as well as being lightweight. The design is stylish and practical, being a convenient size to carry when out biking.

3,000,000 widgets can be produced in 13 weeks, with each widget having a cycle time of 7.1 seconds (as shown in info-graphic, left) The total cost of the widget comes to £95,575.50. This splits up to PVC price (£33,526.80) and the price of aluminium (£62,048.70).
MOULD OPEN (0.3 Seconds)
FREEZE TIME (3.3 Seconds)
The mass production mould chosen is made up of three cavities, which are set up radially. This is to improve the rate of flow of the plastic through the sprewe.

CARD MODELLING
Design a desirable branded product that allows hot food to be eaten on location outdoors. Consider the product’s main role as a way to create, enhance or extend an interesting and desirable experience rather than just an outdoor eating device. Tesla is the chosen brand to work on.
We were given a choice of 4 brands to work on; Tesla, Land Rover, Red Bull, and Philips. Tesla is the chosen brand to work on. Any activity was allowed to be chosen. Hiking was the chosen activity, mainly because it is an easy activity to experience locally. The research is group work and the product design is individual.
PRIMARY RESEARCH (interviewing 4 hikers and going on a hike ourselves) . . . . . . . . .
All interviewees are defined as hobbyist hikers. They have a wide range of knowledge from their hiking experiences. Those interviewed went on a varying length of walks, however they were stating that the average length of a walk for them would be anything over 3 hours This being said, all the hikers would require some form of hot food over that length of time The weather has a really big effect of whether they go hiking or not Hikers are conscious of what they are placing within their bag as they don't want to carry something that they don't need The type of hike that they go on dictates what they want to eat They all consistently state that the worst thing that they can face is a sudden heavy downpour Food is something all of the people we interviewed prioritised to place in their backpack
SECONDARY RESEARCH
A 70kg hiker with a 7kg backpack will need 1800 calories to travel from the trail-head of Mount Whitney to the summit, hiking around 22 miles with an elevation change of around 1800 metres. This is to give you an idea of the amount of energy needed to go on hikes/walks. Therefore family hikes/walks means that the user will not require much calorific food as long if they have a reasonable meal on their journey. To conclude, snacks and cold foods tend to be eaten more often than hot foods. The hot foods that are used need to be boiled, therefore the cooker should be used to boil food. This would be the most effective format, compared to an open flame cooker like a BBQ. Self-heating Can . To heat, you push on the button on the can, which sets off the chemical reaction, heating the container sustainably and safely . The cans are the size of tea light candles, whey 1.33 ounces and are only used once . It is safe to hold while it is turned on. It heats ready made food (e.g. ration packs) within 2 minutes
INSIGHTS "The product should be lightweight yet also give the impression of durability and strength. This is crucial in terms of consumer opinion, as they will rest on the assumption that "weight assures quality". Therefore the product should appear deceptively robust, it should look heavy but actually not be." "The cooking device needs to look minimal, and be compact if people have other equipment on them e.g. photography gear. This means the cooking device mustn’t take up too much space. It must reflect the inside of a Tesla, that is, having a touch screen, being simple to use and has an effective use of contours."
TESLA BRAND ANALYSIS-Tesla use a combination of splines and straight lines in their design. This must be taken on board when designing the cooking device.

PERSONA Age: 27 Gender: Male Occupation: Electrical Design Engineer for Blueprint Recruitment Solutions Education: Coventry University Location: Henley, Oxfordshire Profile Daniel is a highly skilled electrical engineer as well as being a competent product designer. He has plans to potentially develop his own products once he feels he has the time and know - how to do so. With a very selfless attitude Daniel loves helping out other people in any way he can. Enjoying work, however, Daniel feels he wants to branch out into a different line of work to gain more experience. He wants
to promote his skills learnt from his product design degree, electronics
masters and 4 years work in industry to potentially find a new job. Pain Points
Daniel believes there is no app currently on the market which would allow him to promote himself through helping other designers.
Daniel dislikes wasting time and always feels he must be busy, however often finds himself with free time.
TASK GOALS:
- To be confident to talk to anyone about design idea problems/issues -To chat to knowledgeable people on social media -I would like a way to be more organised and feel less pressure
He enjoys his job but feels he can do better for himself.
Feels as though he is not well known enough as a designer, lacking contacts.
EXPERIENCE GOALS:
. . . . . . .
- The ability to speak to experienced entrepreneurs, without paying them - Gain information and advise from reliable sources - To feel organised and know which direction my idea is headed
USER RESEARCH OVERVIEW:
. . . . . . .
After interviewing people about the app and the idea that has been developed, it is clear to see that there is a gap in the market for an app like this. It is a very good way of getting entrepreneurs to interact with each other. They will develop ideas together, creating a popular social hub for entrepreneurs that want to lend a hand to aspiring entrepreneurs in their local area.
High fidelity wireframes have been made to create a graphical representation for the app. Axure has been used to create a working prototype of the app, which is downloadable, using the link from the Axure site.

A lamp created to encourage sustainibilty and green behaviour in the home or at work Having researched into the behavioural aspects of colours I have found that white would be the best colour for the light because it symbolises innocence, peace, purity and cleanliness. I have chosen red for the warning light because it symbolises aggressiveness, energy, hunger and evokes a passionate and visceral responce; i.e. it will encourage the user to change the power soruce of the lamp. I’ve chosen to use green as a base colour for Filia because it symbolises the environment, nature, financial profit and health.
Rapid Ideation and product development sketches
The light bulb is equipped with an intelligent control PCBA. Intelligent control is a range of control techniques that use various artificial intelligence computing approaches. It also has an LED & MCPCB layer which is where both the red and the white LED’s are housed. Filia has been designed to interact with the mains electricity system in the home or workplace that has solar PV systems installed. It is powered by mains electricity which turns on the lamp, as well as charging a battery in the light bulb. The lamp uses time sensor technolgy, by changing the colour of the light to red, to tell the user that they must switch to battery power to save energy gained from the PV system. It uses a time sensorto encourage behavioural change in humans. It uses less power than any other lamp, becuase it uses a rechargable battery and has LED’s, which use up less energy other bulbs. The switch - It has been made to simplify the function for the user. All they must do when they want to switch the power source is flick the switch to the battery icon.

GROUP BASED RE-DESIGN
MODELLING WITH BLUE FOAM
RENDERING WITH KEYSHOT
As a team you are to re-design The volumising Styler, from Mark Hill. It should be intended for high volume production using primarily an injection moulded case. The design will focus on good insight into user-centred issues, effective ergonomics, good handling of form and styling, sustainability, and achieving a depth of detailing both externally and internally. Innovation will be rewarded, but note this can often best be seen at the detail level. The original product was fixed together by ultrasonic welding which made it difficult for us to take it apart. The only way to open it was to break it open. This resulted in introducing a more obvious part line and clips to open the device. By making the product more accessible it is easier to make repairs and recycle parts, in case of any electrical problems or even as a result of reaching the end of its life cycle.
