CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART From 1985 onwards, the global economy and disappearing borders saw post-modernism become the major artistic movement in India.

Photography, installation art, digital media and hyperrealism became a large part of India’s artistic output. The preoccupations and interests of earlier Indian artists were mostly forgotten, and younger artists blurred the lines between indigenous and imported culture in India.

Anish Kapoor may be the most famous contemporary Indian artist, born in Bombay in 1954. Having studied at Chelsea School of Art and Design in England, Kapoor is a well-known sculptor who has won several prestigious awards including the Turner Prize, the Genesis Prize and the Preamium Imperiale. Kapoor has shown his work in many high-profile institutions, including the Tate Modern, New York’s Rockefeller Centre and the Grand Palais in Paris, and was commissioned to make public artwork for the Olympic Park in London that will remain permanent. The Indian Government awarded Kapoor with the Padma Bhushan, which is a great honour as it is the third-highest civilian award in the country.
