HOW RIGHT TO PLAY IS IMPROVING EDUCATION FOR GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD In many countries around the world there is discrimination and prejudice against women and girls, which is particularly true in societies that are very traditional, or in areas that have suffered with war, turmoil and hardship.

Right To Play is a charity that works to ensure that there is gender balance in the education system by challenging discrimination and negativity towards women and girls.

week, 47% of which are girls. As well as working with children, Right To Play also coaches teachers, young people and community leaders to become volunteer coaches; 58% of the 14,900 coaches in the programme are female. Having female role models in the community is good for children and young people, as well as for the women themselves, who have often grown up through harsh and difficult circumstances. Right To Play aims to teach girls to be self-confident; it teaches practical skills such as financial literacy, which results in better work opportunities, and how to protect against unwanted pregnancy, abuse, violence, HIV and prejudice. Right To Play also works to remove barriers to learning that are specific to girls, such as poor provisions for menstrual hygiene and separate toilet facilities, as both can lead to absenteeism and a higher drop out rate amongst teenage girls.
