A generalist at heart, my interests in landscape architecture build from a foundation in construction, sculpture, math and photography. From a background making small scale gardens and well crafted details, my interests now include regional scale planning and urban infrastructure along with the maintenance practices that inform them. I believe landscape architects can reframe challenges as opportunities by understanding the social and environmental context of each site as simultaneously unique and part of a larger story.

change over time Investigations in material transformation fuel my passion for change over time in landscape architecture. MELTING, 2002 500 peeled crayons are loaded into the top funnel. A hot plate within the pedestal melts the crayons, allowing the stream of wax to pour down a funnel and out the exterior pipe, cooling into a solid mass in the steel tray below.

Opposite: EROSION, 2001 Salt blocks erode down a steel tray into a vessel below. As rain fills the vessel and evaporates, the salt remains and rebuilds itself. The cycle of state changes defines the project. Rain switching from vapor to liquid to vapor drives the salt changes from solid to liquid to solid. video documentation at joeyhays.com

solar decathlon An international design build competition in Washington DC showcased solar power and water reuse. Inspired by terraced rice patties, the landscape component to CMU’s Solar Decathlon entry integrates indoor/outdoor gardening with rainwater storage for gardening in cold and dry climates. Our team consisted of three art students, one architecture liaison and one art faculty. As a grad assistant, my roles included design consultation, poster design and presentation, model making, fabrication, installation in DC and reinstallation at Powdermill Nature Reserve where the house serves as educational classroom, scientific laboratory and demonstration center.

green roof roller coaster A roller coaster to entertain plants offers an absurd spectacle for visitors. A collaboration with robotic artist Gregory Witt, Green Roof Roller Coaster was one of eleven BigBots chosen to be part of Robot250, a citywide community art and technology program designed to challenge public perception about what defines a robot. Based loosely on bad science - that plant’s feelings can be monitored through the electrical conductivity in their leaves, Green Roof Roller Coaster uses a wireless signal from the plants in the cars to a micro controller that sends them on a ride when the levels stabilize or they become “bored”. Gregory Witt is largely responsible for the design. Fabrication was shared equally aside from CAD drawings, programming and wireless controls.

gardez l’eau (watch out for the water) Gardez l’eau celebrates the composting toilet as a means for people to rediscover their place in the nutrient cycle. In the 1890s Pittsburgh city engineers thought it was more economical to combine sewer and storm water into one pipe and carry it directly to the rivers to reduce disease and flooding. In the 1950s the accumulating waste forced ALCOSAN to build 90 miles of pipes to intercept the combined system and divert the water to a centrally located treatment plant (asterisk). During dry weather, the interceptors (purple) carry waste water to the treatment plant, but when it rains (as little as one tenth of an inch) they divert the overflow directly into the rivers. An average rainfall in Pittsburgh is one quarter of an inch.

OUTHOUSE WITH A VIEW single-residence wastewater treatment “Outhouse with a View is a three-story self-sustaining marsh system designed to plug onto the side of any existing structure or to reside as a free standing model to raise public awareness about wastewater treatment alternatives. The tower grants a meditative view as well as an education on the cycle of consumption, decomposition, fertilization and growth.

68

gardez l’eau The exhibition featured a two story toilet, located in between the second and third floors of the gallery. It allowed participants to choose which colored toilet paper and colored saw dust to cover their contribution with. A foot-powered trap door then releases the colored poo into a clear vitrine at ground level, creating a communal ‘sand art’ compost. Graphic design of accompanying magazine and instructions by Will Hays. More at stormpoo.com

A fan vented the air from the top of the compost through a container of sawdust and out planters full of Narcissus flowers rendering any foul odors pleasant. A thirty-page magazine for in-tower reading includes context for the project and alternative stormwater solutions. It is available for download at stormpoo.com.
