The Chair’s Report On behalf of my fellow directors, I am pleased to report to the members, benefactors and the broader College community on the activities of St Joseph’s College Foundation over the past year. The Foundation’s vision is to provide facilities for the boys’ health and wellbeing and growing the endowment funds to provide bursary support for future generations of boys in the Marist tradition. In 2022 we raised $2,619,225 from 839 donors. These funds helped us to reach the THRIVE Campaign goal of $12m in support of the development of the Aquatic and Fitness Precinct and Boys from the Bush Bursary Fund. Over the course of the campaign, 2,000 members of our community gave to ensure we can continue to welcome country families to Joeys and so all our boys can enjoy the already muchloved swimming pool and renewed John Healy OAM Fitness Centre. Thanks to this giving, and prudent management of our endowment funds, as of 31 December 2022, Foundation assets across all the constituent trusts totalled more than $22m, compared to $17.3m in 2021, which can be linked directly to the tough investment markets experienced across 2022. Total net income for the year, after absorbing $1.1m of unrealised losses in the market value of investments and before annual distributions to the College, was $1.9m. Even during a tough year, the Foundation made a total annual distribution and beneficiary transfers of $3.9m, principally in support of the construction of the Aquatic and Fitness Precinct. Consolidated cash donations of more than $2.7m were received during the year.

Other significant activities over the past year include Br Anthony Robinson retiring from the Board at the end of 2022. As the Provincial’s Delegate, Br Anthony has had a long association with the Foundation, first joining the board when it was established in 1988. Since then, he has served three terms on the Board and we have been grateful for his ongoing wisdom and advice throughout this time. We thank Br Anthony for his service. In 2023, we will welcome Br Michael Green as the Provincial’s Delegate. It was a year of renewal for the Foundation in 2022. During the year (or in recent years) we have seen a new Chairman, new Headmaster, new Head of Philanthropy and Community Relations and new additions to the Board. In addition, the Foundation stands side by side with the College as it prepares to complete its new masterplan and confronts the financial challenges from reduced government funding. The Board, with the support of the Headmaster, has agreed to review the strategy for the Foundation and to align more strongly its activities to the needs of the College. To that end in 2022 we commenced this work and we will complete it by the end of 2023. The work of the Foundation cannot be achieved without the support of many. We pay our thanks to the generous commitment of the office bearers of our Parents and Friends Association, Old Boys

Union, and the other affiliate associations of the College, including 1881 Parents’ Committee. Their ongoing support at both financial and community levels is exceptional and vital to the College’s future. The Foundation’s work would also not be possible without the operational support of Fiona McQueen and the Philanthropy and Community Relations Team, Matt Easdown, Nimish Matani, our Company Secretary, and the staff of the College Business Office. Thank you. Finally, as my tenure on the Board commences, I look forward to serving on the Foundation and helping to secure a strong and sustainable future for the College. I am confident the Foundation will continue to provide leadership in bringing together the College’s broad support network of parents, both past and present, Old Boys, friends, and supporters, with a single aim of benefiting the College and the boys. Philanthropy Report Thank you to all our donors in 2022 for your support. Together we achieved our THRIVE Campaign goal of $12m for the Aquatic and Fitness Centre and Boys from the Bush bursaries. Once again, the THRIVE Campaign was the focus for philanthropy in 2022, raising $2.62m for the Aquatic and Fitness Centre and Boys from the Bush bursaries. Together with the funds raised from 2019 to 2021, we have achieved our $12m target for the campaign (page 8). Of note is the bequest we received from Suzanne Coorey, who bequeathed on behalf of herself and her husband Dr Glen ‘Herb’ Coorey (1949) a significant gift to the College. This bequest provided funding for the new cardio room in the Fitness Centre (page 16). November was a wonderful month of celebration. The Aquatic and Fitness Centre, completed in August, was formally opened on 13 November at the College’s Family Mass of Thanksgiving. This was a

fitting conclusion to our successful THRIVE Campaign (page 8). We also welcomed our Life Members and volunteers to the College for our annual Life Members event (page 12) to celebrate all we achieve when we come together in support of our boys. This has been a year of renewal in the Advancement Team. In April we farewelled Richard Quinn as Director of Advancement. After stewarding the Advancement program for 16 years, Richard has commenced his well-deserved retirement and is enjoying travelling, his term as Councillor on Hunters Hill Council and, overall, a more leisurely pace of life. Of course, Richard continues to serve the College working with the Admissions Team through interviews with the next generation of Joeys boys and their families.

We also said farewell to our longstanding Admission Officer, Joanne Wilson, who has provided 14 years of service to the Advancement Team. Throughout the year, Janet Tannous, Jake Ryan and Melinda Meyer left the College to pursue new career opportunities. In Term 4, we welcomed our new Philanthropy Manager, Anne Kenyon, and Community Relations Manager, Cherie Tucker to the team. Our Advancement Officer, Fionna Andersen, commenced in Term 1 2023. THRIVE: Overview For generations, parents and Old Boys have supported the College through philanthropic campaigns. In 2019, the College once again called on the Joeys community to come together to rebuild the War Memorial Pool and to provide bursary support for our boys via the Boys from the Bush bursaries. The THRIVE Campaign was one of the largest ever mounted at the College and, with a $12m target, was a significant level within Australian schools. Over the past four years, the Joeys community has contributed $7m toward the construction of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre and $5m to the Boys from the Bush bursaries. More than 1,600 donors gave an average of $4,900 each to support our boys sporting facilities, whilst continuing our commitment to supporting country families. A highlight of the campaign was our Giving Days. In 2019, the College held its first-ever Giving Day with more than $800,000 raised in support of the Boys from the Bush bursaries. In November 2021, as we emerged from lockdowns, the Joeys community once again came together to raise $650,000 for the Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Whilst we continued to raise funds, in March 2021, the Campaign co-chairs

Jim and Julie Tate turned the first sod on the Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Over the following 18 months, construction overcame Covid and La Niña to be completed in August 2022. The College continued the tradition, established with the opening of the War Memorial Pool in 1957, of opening the pool with a lap from the swimming captain and one other boy. In 2022, the first lap of the pool was completed by Callum Wilson (Year 12) and Beau Patterson (Year 8), who secured his spot at a Headmaster’s Assembly when his name was pulled from a raffle, which had every boy’s name in it. The Aquatic and Fitness Centre was formally blessed by Fr Gavin Foster at the Family Mass of Thanksgiving later in November. Since then, the boys have enhanced their training schedules, particularly in water polo and swimming, being able to start their early morning training programs in Term 3. The pool has also become a destination to cool off for all students on hot afternoons. The $5m raised to support the Boys from the Bush bursaries will continue to support rural and regional families and we are proud

that since it was established in 2016, 82 boys have received the bursary, including 45 in 2022. Thank you to all our supporters for your ongoing support for our boys. Your generosity has transformed our sporting facilities and continues to give boys from rural and regional Australia the chance to become Joe-Boys.

Making a Splash On a hot day in Sydney with cloudless blue skies and the sun beating down on the concrete, all roads at Joeys lead to the same place – the new pool. As the bell to signal the end of classes is heard there is a mad race to the dorms. The boys quickly change into their swimmers and after grabbing their goggles and towel, scamper down the steps heading to the cooling waters. The water polo net is secured in place and the lane rope is rolled out across the pool to delineate the training area from the recreation area.

Once it is all in place, the gates are opened and the boys burst through, quickly jumping into the pool. No matter what their purpose – whether it’s swimming, water polo or lifesaving training, or mucking around with their mates – the first and most important job is to get wet and cool down from the heat of the day. Then it’s on to business. When it first opened, both Fred Wiggins and George Wall from Year 8 were keen to get into the new pool, and they remember lining up early on a Saturday morning in August when it was first opened to the

students. Their anticipation was palpable as the Olympic and FINA standard 50-metre pool with 10 lanes was now going to be available to them, so the potential for what it would mean was exciting. Adding to this, the comprehensive fitness and activity hub in the shape of the John Healy OAM Fitness Centre featuring weight training and cardio fitness room was now a reality. Year 10 student Charlie Larkin clearly remembers the old seven lane wide pool with the terracotta tiled surrounds and lack of heating. Both Charlie and his teammate James Millar hope to make the Firsts water polo team next year and are sure that the new heated pool will be a key factor to helping make that a reality. Previously the boys were not able to train early in the morning until the beginning of Term 4 because the water temperature was too cold for them to swim any earlier in the season. Now the longer time spent in the pool ensures that they build up fitness and develop their skills further before the first round starts. The effects of the new pool are becoming more apparent every day with a lot more people wanting to get into the water. Cameron Hart, Swimming Convenor, has noticed that some of the boys who may be doing a workout are then jumping into the pool afterwards. “Having the gym and the cardio area right next to it has meant that more people are around the whole area so kids who may not have thought about swimming at Joeys before are giving it a go.” In November 2022, the inaugural swimming carnival to be held in the new pool was a wonderful day with the entire school coming together to watch the finals. “The house groups were doing war cries and the atmosphere was awesome. To be able to do that on school grounds for the first time instead of offsite, was just fantastic,” Cameron explains. And as the number of students regularly using the pool increases, the benefits for the swimming programs will most certainly be felt. Exciting times ahead!

Boys from the Bush: A second home As George Burns (2019) reminisces about his upbringing on his family farm in Trangie in New South Wales, it’s evident his interest in agriculture was ingrained from childhood. After six years at Joeys, George’s ambition led him to take a different path with his tertiary education, steering away from the traditional, well-trodden farming route. “I want to work in agricultural investment, so a degree comes in handy,” explains George. He decided on a Bachelor of Economics and Business at the University of New England in Armidale. During our conversation with George, it seemed apt that he was operating a windrower up and down the field during the busy harvesting season. On his university break, George is happy to roll up his sleeves to help his parents on the farm. Along the way, George embarked on some detours. After completing his schooling, he undertook two adventurous gap years as a station hand at Fort Constantine Station, in the gulf region of Northern Queensland, near Cloncurry. There, on the vast cattle property, he honed invaluable skills that would come in handy during his studies in agricultural investment. It’s a far cry from his days at Joeys where, in 2014, he began as a Year 7 Boarder. “In the beginning I remember being very homesick for so long, but as mum and dad had both gone to boarding school and absolutely loved it, I knew it would be okay. Joeys kept

us so busy and so involved that one day I realised I wasn’t homesick anymore. Joeys became my second home.” George was a self-confessed sports fanatic, so Joeys was the perfect place for him. “I loved playing rugby and, because we played it so much, I got a lot better at it. I dreamed of becoming a Flanker, but I was the perfect size for a Forward, so I never got out of the front row!”

For George’s family, the Boys from the Bush bursary allowed him to continue the family tradition of attending Joeys. George’s ancestor, Andrew O’Neil was one of the earliest Joeys students, coming to Joeys in 1883. George is also the 6th generation Joe-Boy on his mother’s side. While attending Joeys, George found a genuine passion for mathematics, and he holds Mr Magdy Habib in high esteem – he was just one of the teachers who always offered to help with additional academic support. George acknowledges that the boarding environment was ideal in supporting his studies, admitting that he wouldn’t have achieved as much if he was studying alone at home. “Joeys community is unreal,” declares George enthusiastically, “and because of Joeys I have far more mates from different parts of the country and I’ve had many more opportunities.”

JOEYS Partners Everyone can give, it’s about finding what you want to give to and then how best you can do that. – Ashton Waugh For Ashton Waugh (1990) the act of giving is in his DNA. Growing up he saw his father Bill (1960) contribute to the College in numerous ways including serving on the College Foundation Board and on the executive of the Parents and Friends Association. Bill also used his connections as a hotelier to have plans drawn up for various projects around the College including the Tony Lantry Memorial Scoreboard at The Park. What made a lifelong impression on Ashton was not just that his dad made so many contributions to College life, but that he continued to do so long after both Ashton, and his brother Mitchell (1995), had graduated from the College. With his son Ryan completing his schooling at Joeys in 2021, Ashton is now continuing his father’s legacy of giving to the College. Not only is he serving on the College Foundation Board, College Advisory Council and Finance Advisory Council, Ashton is a Silver Foundation Life Member and spearheads the Joeys Partners program. Established in 2015, Joeys Partners Program partners with businesses within the Joeys community to help support Boys from the Bush bursaries. “You can’t put a dollar value on what Joeys has done for me and my family. The lifelong friendships and the Joeys

community are irreplaceable,” remarks Ashton. More than ever, the College recognises the importance of developing these partnerships and offers opportunities for exclusive association with the College through the Joeys Partners program. “I remember saying to my dad ‘you know Mitchell and I finished five years ago

Life Members Reception In November 2022, we were blessed with a perfect Spring evening for the annual Life Members’ Reception, with more than 100 guests gathering by the side of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre for an evening of connection and recognition. Life Members acknowledged on the night were recognised for moving to another tier (the list is provided below). Being able to meet in person after the challenges of the past couple of years gave the occasion even more appeal and the musical entertainment provided by James Croke (2014) was a perfect accompaniment. Guests were given the opportunity to be taken on a personal tour of the new facilities by students who were thrilled to show off the shiny new equipment and share their excitement for what they will be able to achieve because of what is now available. A final highlight for many came towards the end of the night when the pool filled with energetic boys enjoying a late swim, showing first-hand the value they receive from the brand-new facilities.

Life Members: Patrick and Angela Gallagher We liked the example set by the people we knew who had been at the school. – Patrick Gallagher From the day their son Austin started at Joeys in 2014, Patrick and Angela Gallagher have watched their three very different boys grow into fine young men who love Joeys, and most importantly, they have treasured their lifelong friendships. It was not a difficult decision to send their sons Austin, Jack and Max to the College, “we liked the Marist tradition at St Joseph’s and the school’s strong connection with the country, which makes it unique.” Angela explains. From the beginning, Patrick and Angela have been an active part of the Joeys community. Over the past decade, they have been giving to our community, from

volunteering in the Parents & Friends Association, through to philanthropic giving to the SJC Foundation and, as the owners of the nearby ‘Triple Hs’, they have also hosted many Joeys parents and friends events. Through their giving to both bursaries and capital projects, the Gallaghers have become Foundation Life Members, which recognises accumulated lifetime giving to the Foundation. This ongoing support, Patrick explains, is to help the school grow and become a better place for future students. With the recent launch of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre in 2022, they have had an added

level of enjoyment that its completion has brought. “I know you can give to any cause,” says Angela, “but it’s so worthwhile when you are giving to something that is so important to you and your family, and you get to be a part of and see what you’re giving to.” Enhancing “the rural connection at Joeys that’s so integral is really appealing,” explains Patrick about their motivation for supporting the Boys from the Bush Bursary. It’s the fantastic camaraderie with friends from both the city and country that their boys truly value, and why this bursary is equally important to them.

Always Giving Dr Glen ‘Herb’ Coorey (1949) was a skilled surgeon and respected leader in Australia’s Lebanese community. Herb’s life was illuminated by the presence of Suzanne Catherine Coorey, a woman of extraordinary intelligence and culture. She was not just his wife but a steadfast companion for his larger-than-life character. Both Herb and Sue understood the importance of charity and thoughtfully identified and gave to those in need. Their legacy, a symphony of generosity, touched countless lives, institutions and charities, including Joeys. Born in the small Queensland town of Charleville in 1932, Herb was sent to Downlands College – a boarding school in Toowoomba – where he proved to be a spirited young man who was “a handful for the priests” as his son Andrew explained, and at the ripe old age of 14, was asked “to look elsewhere for his further education”. Education mattered to his mother, who was herself illiterate in English, so after leaving Down lands, Herb arrived at St Joseph’s College to complete his final two years of high school. He loved his time here and thrived under the experienced care of the Brothers who recognised that, although easily bored, Herb’s intellect was apparent, and his many antics were over-looked. Herb spoke fondly of Brother Liguori’s skills as a

maths teacher and, through the coaching of Brother Henry, developed a keen interest in rugby, although his talent didn’t quite match his enthusiasm. At Joeys, Herb formed an unbreakable bond with his lifelong friend, Paddy Houlahan (1949). Paddy convinced Herb to call St John’s College home during his six years of medical study at the University of Sydney. Upon graduation, Herb embarked on his medical career at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA), where he would continue to serve for decades. It was during the first years at RPA that Herb crossed paths with a red-haired physiotherapist, Suzanne Hidden. On St Patrick’s Day 1959, they were married and set sail for Britain on a steamship, destined for postgraduate study at the Royal College of Surgeons. Trefle, embraced Herb into their family and Herb often remarked that Australia could not be called a racist country: “How could a wog from western Queensland marry the beautiful daughter of a judge from Bellevue Hill?” Herb and Sue lived life well and were passionate travellers; their adventures included one memorable night in Pamplona, Spain, learning the art of bullfighting from Ernest Hemingway. More recently, they were honoured guests at the birth of the nation of Timor-Leste, invited by their friend José Ramos-Horta. Herb became a pillar of the medical community, serving on the RPA Medical Board and as the Head of Urology. As a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, he left an indelible mark, with his students recalling his constant humour and charm. His son remembers as a child trying to disagree with his father, “he would disarm you with his humour and you’d end up laughing so hard, you would forget what you were trying to argue about”. Herb Coorey passed away in 2012 – in a final act of generosity when Sue passed, on behalf of herself and her beloved husband, she named 37 beneficiaries in her will including a significant bequest to St Joseph’s College, a gift that has provided funding for the new cardio room in the Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Herb and Sue’s philanthropic spirit knew no bounds, extending its embrace not only in their lifetime but beyond.

SJC – Philanthropy Report 2022 SJC WHITING FELLOWS The Whiting Fellowship is the way in which the College recognises and honours those who have decided to support the College by leaving a gift in their will. George Robert Whiting (1834–1922) was one of the College’s earliest benefactors. He was instrumental in enabling the Marist Brothers to commence the great sandstone building which is at the heart of the College campus. Not only did George Whiting make possible the financing of this building, which commenced in 1882, he later secured a second quarry of sandstone when the original quarry seemed insufficient. He was an inspirational contributor to the College. If St Joseph’s College is in your estate plan, please notify the Head of Philanthropy and Community Relations and you will be invited to join the Whiting Fellowship, allowing the College and SJC Foundation to acknowledge you in your lifetime. SJC Foundation Funds The St Joseph’s College Foundation acts as Trustees for the following Funds:

SJC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

SJC Foundation Scholarship Fund was set up to maintain the diverse nature of the College’s student body, allowing any boy, regardless of geographical origin, family background and experience, a chance at a Joeys education. Since 2015, the Joeys community has collectively given over $4.3m for the Boys from the Bush bursaries to ensure that we can continue to welcome talented and motivated boys from rural, regional and remote areas. There have been 58 recipients since 2016, and these families have collectively received $2.4m in financial support.

SJC FOUNDATION BUILDING FUND

SJC Foundation Building Fund assists in providing for the physical future of the College campus. Government funding does not cover the cost of capital works, including maintenance and new buildings

and we are grateful for each generation supporting the next by giving to improve facilities and amenities that provide a better learning experience for our boys. In 2022, the College raised more than $2m towards the Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Construction commenced in March 2021 and will provide a new FINA standard pool for swimming and water polo, and the state-of-the-art John Healy OAM Fitness Centre. In previous years, the SJC Foundation Building Fund contributed to the Chapel renovation and the construction of both the Tony Lantry Memorial Scoreboard and Technology and Arts Precinct.

SJC FOUNDATION EDUCATION FUND

SJC Foundation Education Fund was established in 1987 to develop and provide for the long-term sustainability of the College. The Education Fund relies on a sound investment strategy that provides financial assistance for several students through named scholarships (including the Petersen Scholarships). It also funds the

College’s Artist and Writer in Residence projects and the Br Michael Naughtin Research Fellowship for staff.

SJC INDIGENOUS EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP

SJC Foundation Indigenous Education Partnership at St Joseph’s College has become the lighthouse project for the Indigenous program in the NSW curriculum. In October 2016, the College, in partnership with the Association of Independent Schools and UTS, embarked on a pursuit of excellence in Indigenous education. In April 2019, the pilot phase of this project came to a conclusion, with the research, actions and outcomes drawing recognition and celebration from Federal Parliament. The approach and trajectory of the St Joseph’s College Indigenous Education Program received significant acclaim from both sides of the parliamentary floor as both Hon Tony Abbott MP and Hon Tanya Plibersek MP launched Phase 2 of the AIS Partnership Project. This phase has called for Joeys to remain an active leader in this field by developing a support network whereby the College acts as a mentor and guide in best-practise Indigenous education to three schools: Shore School, North Sydney; Macquarie Anglican Grammar School, Dubbo; and Canberra Grammar School. SJC focuses on pastoral care and building community outside the classroom, to create the right support and the right environment to transition into the classroom.

SJC ANCILLARY FUND

SJC Ancillary Fund receives donations that can be directed through another tax deductible (DGR) program such as the Australian Sports Foundation. These are then granted back to the College to benefit sporting, co-curricular activities and outdoor education.
