At the very first Germiston National Yearling Sale in 1977, future champion and US-sire Bold Tropic sold for R17 500. He was from the first crop of sire Plum Bold, who had the joint-highest average at the sale together with Champion sire Persian Wonder whose son Lawn topped the sale at R71 000. In 2015 another National Sale champion was crowned Horse of the Year - Futura, who’d been sold for R500 000 as a yearling in his year. National Sale prices may have gone up, but the classic performances firmly remain.

Welcome to our March/April 2016 issue of International Racehorse Magazine. With the excitement of the South African Sales and Cape Racing Season nearly behind us, we now look forward to the upcoming Dubai World Cup and Kentucky Derby, two of my most favourite racing events. Travelling to these events brings home just how fortunate we are to be associated with this intensely passionate sport and the privilege of sharing these and other such events with you. So on to this edition. We examine where the Kentucky Derby hopefuls traditionally come from. Bunny Hinzman looks at the tracks where these three year olds kick off their Derby campaigns on page 13. Michele MacDonald investigates just how much past winners of the Dubai World Cup are changing the breeding landscape around the world. Turning success on the world stage into a successful breeding career can be perilous, but many are leaving their mark and forever changing the course, read more on page 102. Michele goes behind the scenes at Shadwell Farm and Shadwell Stables where Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s keen following of pedigree and eye for conformation has yet again produced two hopefuls for the Kentucky Derby, on page 32. She rounds off her features with a visit to Summer Wind Farm, where there is much excitement after the birth of American Pharoah’s new half sister on page 82. Robyn Louw spends some time with the Snaith Racing Team to chat about their recent record breaking 8 runners during one of South Africa’s most famous races, The J&B Met on page 66. More J&B Race Day coverage by Liesl King, with the spotlight on the filly Smart Call, who ruffled some feathers when she trumped all her male counterparts during this year’s event. There is so much more, like the recent record breaking CTS Premier Yearling Sale, South Africa’s first Million Dollar Race, all the way to Qatar for the HH The Emir’s Sword Festival and beyond to the Asian Racing Conference. So please keep turning these pages. I leave you with a quote: “It isn’t important who is ahead at one time or another, in either an election or a horse race. It’s the horse that comes in first at the finish that counts”. Harry S. Truman 1948 See you at the races!

TREKKING THE KENTUCKY DERBY TRAIL
T
he road to the Kentucky Derby is full of North America’s richest racing history. Set at racetracks across the country, its saga is constantly growing with the wins of the future’s fan-winning heroes and infamous upsetters. The hosting venues themselves, with their own major prep races, are the extensive chapters enfolded within the dramatic narrative of the Derby trail, ultimately culminating on that first Saturday in May when a new Kentucky Derby champion is coronated with the blanket of roses. AQUEDUCT: Most notably, the great 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat came through New York’s Aqueduct for the Wood Memorial (GI) en route to the Kentucky Derby. From the New York track, this superhorse would go on to unparalleled achievements in not only the Kentucky Derby, but also the Preakness and Belmont. However, Secretariat, known to his followers as ‘Big Red’, didn’t win at Aqueduct before his Triple Crown sweep – the chestnut son of Bold Ruler was third. Facing empty aprons and controversies in recent years, the bluecollar Aqueduct offers the long-standing crème-de-la-crème of Kentucky Derby preps – the Wood Memorial. of the Wood Memorial. Hall of Fame rider Eddie Arcaro won the race nine times in his career, followed by Angel Cordero Jr.’s four victories, and a three-way tie for third between Johnny Longden, Bill Shoemaker, and Mike Smith with three wins. Iconic trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons saddled seven winners of the Wood Memorial, and the colors of Belair Stable, Wheatley Stable, Greentree Stable, and C.V. Whitney each have been victorious on four occasions. The Wood Memorial has become the historically-richest race on the Derby trail. Such storied horses as Gallant Fox (1930), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), and Seattle Slew (1977) have gone on from the Wood Memorial to sweep the Triple Crown. Also on the incredible roster of Wood Memorial triumphs are the successes Pompey (1926), Twenty Grand (1931), Johnstown (1939), Market Wise (1941), Hoop Jr. (1945), Hill Prince (1950), Native Dancer (1953), Nashua (1955), Bold Ruler (1957), Damascus (1967), Foolish Pleasure (1975), Bold Forbes (1976), Slew O’Gold (1983), Gulch (1987), and Easy Goer (1989). The Wood Memorial’s emergence into the millennium was highlighted by its winner, Fusaichi Pegasus, who would go on to triumph in the Kentucky Derby. Hosting its first race meeting in 1938, Keeneland masterfully embraces a seamless blend of past and present. The venue embraces modernity and antique. The Lexington, Kentucky course marries past and present – it neighbors the historic Calumet Farm, and across the road, modern jet airplanes roar in and out of the Lexington Airport. Preserving the past and supporting the future, Keeneland is the outlet for many young racehorses. The venue hosts the Kentucky Derby of yearling auctions: the September Yearling Sale, where thousands of horses are sold over a two week period. Kentucky Derby dreams become destiny for many buyers who make purchases at this sale – Keeneland has sold nineteen horses that have won the run for the roses. Keeneland’s significance to the Kentucky Derby does not end at the junction of the yearling sales. Rather, the venue hosts a pair of the final qualifying races – the Blue Grass Stakes (GI) and the Lexington Stakes (GIII). The more prominent of the two, the Blue Grass Stakes has produced successes such as 1940 Preakness and Belmont victor Bimelech, 1942 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes (GI) winner Shut Out, 1948 Kentucky Derby placer Coaltown, Hall of fame racehorse Round Table, 1959 Kentucky Derby winner Tomy Lee, 1962 Preakness placer Ridan, 1963 Kentucky Derby and Belmont triumph Chateguay, 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness legend Northern Dancer who was followed a year later by Kentucky Derby winner Lucky Debonair, then Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion Forward Pass and 1970’s Derby star Dust Commander. Two years later, Kentucky Derby and Belmont victor Riva Ridge took the Blue Grass, followed by 18

Honest Pleasure, Alydar, and Spectacular Bid. Other famed Blue Grass winners include Summer Squall, Strike the Gold, Prairie Bayou, Holy Bull, Skip Away, and Pulpit. In recent years, with the presence of their synthetic PolyTrack surface, Keeneland hasn’t had as major an influence on the Derby, contested on conventional dirt. The race nonetheless has produced horses that have been successful in their careers, such as late Pacific Classic (GI) winner Dullahan. However, with Keeneland’s conversion to dirt in 2014, Keeneland should prove to be a major influence on the Derby as it was in the past. The Lexington Stakes has been a sound last-minute stepping stone for Kentucky Derby contestants and has also produced successful racehorses. In 1999, Charismatic set the stakes record for the Lexington before going on to win the Derby and the Preakness. Two years earlier, Belmont upsetter Touch Gold took this contest, and in 1991, Preakness winner Hansel won this race. In 1988, Risen Star won this event before taking both the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. OAKLAWN: Racing since 1904, Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas is a racecourse many racing enthusiasts regard with love and appreciation. Spectators travel to the racecourse particularly for its final week of racing, the Racing Festival of the South. The event offers two Grade I contests, and eleven Graded Stakes events. Oaklawn begins this week with the Fantasy Stakes for Kentucky Oaks (GI) hopefuls and culminates with the Arkansas Derby (GI) for Kentucky Derby prospects. The Arkansas Derby was first held in 1936, but didn’t see its first significant winner until Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and

Kentucky Derby winner Sunny’s Halo in 1983. It was more than ten years until Victory Gallop would win the Arkansas Derby before upsetting Real Quiet’s 1998 Triple Crown in the Belmont by a few inches. The race finally picked up steam when fan favorite Smarty Jones took the contest before winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. The next year, popular Afleet Alex won the race and went on to a miraculous Preakness victory and a Belmont win. He would be followed in 2006 by Lawyer Ron, then the world’s richest racehorse, Curlin. In 2012, Bodemeister won the Arkansas Derby before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. The Arkansas Derby has proven to be a pivotal race in the three-year-old division. Most notably, last year, the winner of the Arkansas Derby did not only take the run for the roses, but also he dominated the Triple Crown and later became the first Triple Crown champion to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI). This colt, American Pharoah, won the Arkansas Derby by eight lengths over Southwest Stakes winner Far Right in the nine furlong race.
California’s Santa Anita has been the home of numerous Triple Crown superstars since its creation in 1934. In less than ten years, the great racing icon Seabiscuit would claim the racecourse as his home track. His early presence would set the tone for the caliber of its future residents. Its star-power has never died out – in recent years it has been the home of super-mare Zenyatta, who won all but one of her twenty starts, as well as the American Pharoah, who, last year, became the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. Santa Anita’s spring racing is highlighted by the Derby preps, the Sham Stakes (GIII), Robert B. Lewis Stakes (GIII), San Felipe Stakes (GII). These contests culminate with the Santa Anita Derby (GI), a race that has often determined the major Kentucky Derby contenders.
During early April, the best from the west converge in the Santa Anita Derby, which is one of the final qualifying races on the trail to Churchill Downs. Last spring, the nine furlong contest produced the Bob Baffert-trained Dortmund, who ranked as one of the favorites in stablemate American Pharoah’s Derby SANTA ANITA: triumph. Historically, the race has produced ten Kentucky Derby Daily during the early hours of morning, the sun lingers on the champions: Hill Gail (1952), Determine (1954), Swaps (1955), horizon, casting premature light and dramatic shadow across the Lucky Debonair (1965), Majestic Prince (1969), Triple Crown San Gabriel’s ridged mountainside behind Santa Anita. A tribute to the quality of thoroughbred on offer at the National Sale can also be seen in the fact that the last fourVodacom Durban July winners (Pomodoro, Heavy Metal, Legislate and Power King) were sold at this sale, as were the last three winners of the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Legal Eagle, Futura and Capetown Noir). The 2016 catalogue is once again full of quality, with the best sires and broodmares in the country represented. Leading sires Captain Al (17), Dynasty (14),Fort Wood (10), Kahal (21), Silvano (23), Trippi (9),Var (28) and Western Winter (3) are all well represented on the National Sale, while young sires with their first yearlings up for sale at the National Sale include Await The Dawn (10), Byword (13), Crusade (25), Eightfold Path (8), Irish Flame (3), Marchfield (5), Oratorio (18) and Twice Over (13).
Captain Al’s draft includes a filly out of SA Oaks winner Arcola (Lot 446), as well as a full sister to recent G2 Horses For Causes Sceptre Stakes winner Princess Royal and half sister to champion Princess Victoria (Lot 264). Dynasty has a strong draft, with his lots including an own sister to Horse Of The Year Legislate (Lot 33), a colt out of Silvano’s G1 Summer Cup winning daughter Flirtation (Lot 96), a filly out of champion Imperious Sue (Lot 144) and a half brother to G1 Summer Cup hero Master Sabina (Lot 305). lots include a colt out of Oaks winner Bedloe’s Island (Lot 7), a colt out of G1 winner Covenant (Lot 53) and a half brother to champion Rabiya and the very promising Bela-Bela (Lot 230). Shamardal’s son Lope De Vega, whose first crop of runners included champion Belardo, has a colt (lot 15) whose dam is a half sister to G2 winner Satans Quick Chick and who hails from the family of major recent G1 winners Declaration Of War and Union Rags.

our exciting young stallion prospects will have their first progeny on offer at auction this year, including two Gr1 winners – the first being Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade and the second being the nine length victor of the Gr1 SA Derby and Gr1 Daily News 2000, Irish Flame. The next two stallions both represent the first progeny from sons of the “iron-horse” Giant’s Causeway - French Gr3 winner Eigthfold Path and Summerhill and Piemonte Stud’s Await The Dawn, the latter unfortunately deceased after a freak accident occurred whilst covering during his second breeding season. Hailed as possibly one of the best horses in his time to have a stable at the famed Ballydoyle operation, the beautifully-bred Await The Dawn out of a Shirley Heights / Dixieland Band mare called Valentine Band caused a stir when he broke his maiden in Ireland easily, going away by four lengths. wins in the UK, America and Dubai. Await The Dawn by Giant’s Causeway was Timeform Rated 126, including winning the Gr3 Kiltern Stakes by an incredible nine lengths – his first Group race appearance. At age four he won both the Gr3 Huxley Stakes and Gr2 Hardwick Stakes at Royal Ascot by three lengths, and he was ready for Gr1 company. Await The Dawn went on to place third in the Gr1 Juddmonte International, however it was not his usual impressive form. It was discovered on the way home after the race that the horse had Travel Sickness which had escalated to be life-threatening. After his recovery, he joined the stable of Mike De Kock in Dubai, as his “World Cup horse”. Sadly after an initial win at Meydan, it came to an end in the Gr1 Sheema Classic when Await The Dawn finished fifth, despite a career-ending injury. Leaving behind only two foal crops, his first 10 yearlings will be offered at the TBA National Yearling Sale in April.

The next impressive addition to the KZN sire ranks is Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade standing at Scott Bros’ Highdown Stud, a son of Mr Greeley out of Johannesburg mare La Traviata. A handsome black horse with no markings, Crusade is descended from a dam-line which happens to be filled Gr1 Middle Park Stakes victors. His broodmare sire Johannesburg is a winner of Europe’s exclusive race for juvenile colts, as is Minardi – a half-brother to Myth, the dam of Johannesburg. Crusade has been very well supported in his first three seasons at stud, filling his book each year with over 100 mares. He stamps his progeny in his exact image, with his yearlings tending to be plain black individuals with little to no white markings and a few chestnuts, reminiscent of his sire Mr Greeley. A beautifully-balanced and eyecatching stallion with a lovely sloping shoulder, a deep girth and a long-striding walk with a distinctive spring in his step behind, Crusade is certainly a sight to behold and has a very kind disposition. He has been Equinome tested as a C:C and this confirms that his inclination will be towards producing sprinting individuals. Crusade’s career was hampered by a back injury, and he placed fourth in the Gr3 Somerville Tatersall Stakes. A first foal for La Traviata, Crusade is a half-brother to twotime winner and Gr2 and Gr3 placed Cristoforo Columbo.
Crusade will be represented by 25 individuals, including a number of half-siblings to several winners at the Nationals in April. Another beautifully-bred young sire that is also resident at the Scott Bros’ Highdown Stud is the Niarchos-bred Eightfold Path, the second son of Giant’s Causeway to stand at stud in KZN and South Africa. A product of two champions, Eightfold Path is the first foal of super race-mare Divine Proportions by Kingmambo – the winner of five Gr1 races in France and crowned Champion 2YO Filly, as well as top 3YO and 4YO in her years. One of SA’s leading racing journalists, Sarah Whitelaw, remarked how similar Eightfold Path looked to the great Nureyev, in both looks and stature and he certainly stands out in the paddocks at Highdown Stud with his distinctive white blaze and dished face and beautiful movement. Eightfold Path enjoyed a brief but spectacular two year old career in France, winning on debut over 1200m before running two lengths off subsequent French Champion 2YO Colt, Siyouni, in the Gr3 Prix La Rochette over 1400m. Dropped back in trip for his next and final start of his juvenile campaign, Eightfold Path ran his opposition ragged in the

himself as a first class racehorse out of the top drawer in the Gr1 SA Derby when he left the mighty Piere Jourdan in his trail, by an incredible nine and half lengths. Irish Flame went on to win the Gr1 Daily News 2000, Gr2 Gold Circle Derby and set a course record in the UK over 2200m, giving the second horse 6kgs in weight and a comfortable three length beating. Irish Flame placed his sire firmly on the map and amongst his placings were a second in the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July and a third in the Gr1 SA Classic, whilst placing in the Gr2 Al Rashidiya in Dubai. Irish Flame is represented by just three individuals at the National Yearling Sale – including an exciting filly from Backworth Stud consigned as Lot 25. A majestic stallion who has let down into an absolute picture, She is a daughter of a full-sister to the dam of Beach Beauty is the first son of Dynasty to go to stud in South Africa - (by Dynasty), therefore almost a full-sister in blood to the Irish Flame. Ticking all the boxes when it comes to being a brilliant five time Gr1 winning racemare. He has injected his top-class stallion prospect, the big striding Irish Flame has size, outstanding quality and substance into his progeny and the categories of conformation, pedigree and race record they are certainly not to be missed. well covered. Out of Flaming Rock mare Clock The Rock, he descends from one of South Africa’s best female lines With several young stallions in KZN such as Visionaire and - the Corn family – and Irish Flame bears many similarities Traffic Guard leading the way, KZN looks to be a on firm to that of his brilliant sire, Dynasty – both being crowned footing with the quality of yearlings from their first season Equus Horse Of The Year as well as Champion 3YO colts sires’ on offer this year. This sentiment was confirmed by the of their respective years. Racing in South Africa, UK and the yearling inspectors that made their way around the farms in UAE, Irish Flame won six times and placed three over 1600m January - stating that “KZN have certainly upped their game”. – 2450m, winning close to R3million in stakes. He stamped Watch this space. Gr3 Prix Eclipse and earned him a Timeform Rating of 104p. Injury sadly prevented him from competing in his Classic year, but he returned as an older horse winning another two races which included the Grand Handicap de Deauville (Listed) over 1600m at the age of five. Eightfold Path has developed a reputation for producing big, muscular individuals with good substance and bone. Although a late arrival for his first breeding season at stud, he has covered over 160 mares to date and is represented at the National Yearling Sale by eight smart individuals, including a half-sister to Gr2 winner Harry Lime, consigned by breeders Rathmor Stud.

SHADWELL’S TALE
OF TWO COLTS AND THE DERBY
While fortune plays a tremendous role in the racing endeavors of owners and breeders, it is not by chance alone that the American branch of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Shadwell empire is marching relentlessly toward this year’s Kentucky Derby with two undefeated colts.
U
nder the guiding hand of Sheikh Hamdan, a keen follower of pedigrees and a shrewd judge of conformation, Shadwell Farm in Lexington and Shadwell Stable have evolved with an overriding goal of winning Classic races.
To that end, Shadwell breeds its roughly 100 mares based in America to the best stallions in Kentucky and also typically purchases an enviable group of yearlings at select sales. Thus, this tale of two colts features the perfect blend of Shadwell homebred Shagaf and yearling purchase Mohaymen, both unbeaten and ranked third and first, respectively, through the first week of March on the list of three-year-olds with Kentucky Derby qualifying points. “This is fun,” said Shadwell Farm Vice President and General Manager Rick Nichols with a deep chuckle of satisfaction. “We’re going to hang on to this train as long as we can and see where it takes us.” Ever since Shadwell Farm was founded in 1985, Sheikh Hamdan and Nichols have built a powerful but purposefully low-key force

in Thoroughbred racing. Shadwell is about quality and results, not publicity or hype. Perhaps the most tranquil and lovely Thoroughbred farm in Lexington, with its understated emphasis on nature’s rolling hills and tree-lined ridges rather than showy barns and other manmade edifices, Shadwell has been the birthplace of horses that have won nine Classic races in Europe. The ring of honor of top horses bred and raised at the farm, as Shadwell notes on its website, includes Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee, also runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic; 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby winner Nashwan; Epsom Derby winner Erhaab; European champion juvenile filly and 1000 Guineas winner Shadayid, and other 1000 Guineas winners Harayir and Ghanaati. Today, Shadwell spans 3,400 acres over three separate properties, including divisions for yearlings and for retired horses or those on a break from training. Shadwell Stable, the racing division, currently encompasses 102 horses, including young stock. The royal blue and white Shadwell

silks now carried by Mohaymen and Shagaf have previously been associated with the likes of 2006 American Horse of the Year Invasor, an Argentine-bred purchased from Uruguay who captured the Breeders’ Cup Classic and four other Grade 1 stakes before winning the Dubai World Cup, and 2006 Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, a $725,000 yearling purchase. With Sheikh Hamdan on hand at Churchill Downs and accompanied by Shadwell team members from Kentucky and Dubai, Jazil finished a commendable fourth to Barbaro in the 2006 Kentucky Derby after unleashing a run that catapulted him from last early. That finish, the subsequent Belmont win and other major victories perhaps ignited more interest in Sheikh Hamdan for American racing, and fate began to take shape in the matings he chose for some of his mares and the yearlings selected at auction, which typically had been more skewed toward European performance. But Shadwell’s tale of two colts is very decidedly American. In February of 2013, unbeaten Derby contender Shagaf was born at Shadwell with hopes he could live up to the promise of his genes. By champion and Preakness Stakes winner Bernardini, Shagaf was produced by the stakes-winning Unbridled’s Song mare Muhaawara, a half sister to Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Eldaafer and a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winner Habibti. With that family, there was every reason to think he could be special. About three months later and two days before Orb eclipsed rivals in the 2013 Kentucky Derby, Mohaymen was foaled just north of Lexington at the Cleary family’s Clearsky Farms. The son of Tapit and the multiple graded stakes-winning Dixie Union mare Justwhistledixie would not come to the attention of Shadwell until a year later when he was consigned to the Keeneland September yearling sale. As Nichols recalls, when he first saw the colt at Keeneland, he liked “everything” about him. “That particular year, unfortunately, Sheikh Hamdan wasn’t able to attend the sale as he usually does. He said, ‘Go have a look and see what you find and send me a list and I will review the pedigrees,’ ” Nichols said, noting that Stephen Collins, manager of the sheikh’s Derrinstown Stud in Ireland and Shadwell Farm’s assistant manager Jody Dunlap were helping inspect yearlings at Keeneland. “When we saw (the Tapit colt), I called the boss straightaway. I told him,‘I’m going to send you a list, but this is the one you want,’ ” Nichols related. “He had such a tremendous pedigree, he was so well put together and he had such a beautiful way of walking. He was just one who had it all.” The Keeneland catalog page revealed that the colt, just the third foal of Justwhistledixie, was a half brother to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day, and the price climbed higher and higher after the steel gray strode into the ring. But Nichols wasn’t about to let him get away, bidding $2.2 36

million—much more than the typical Shadwell purchase at auction—and turning back an array of rivals to secure the colt. “He’s got very nice conformation and he just has a whole lot of potential,” Nichols said at the time from his seat in the sale pavilion, adding that he could envision the horse in the Shadwell stallion barn one day. At the same sale, Nichols bought two other Tapit colts, paying $1.1 million for a bay out of stakes winner Foxy Danseur, by Mr. Greeley, and $500,000 for a chestnut out of a stakes-placed half sister to champion Stevie Wonderboy. When Sheikh Hamdan arrived to inspect his yearlings, Nichols said his boss wanted to race one in Europe. “I had in my mind he might take Mohaymen,” Nichols said, referring to the gray who had been given a name from classical Arabic that means “dominant.” “He was lighter and smaller, more of a European type. “But he said, ‘You keep the gray and I’ll take the bay,’ ” Nichols recalled of the decision that could wind up being a crucial one as the American Classic season unfolds, considering the talent that Mohaymen has displayed to date. Sheikh Hamdan sends some of his yearlings to Europe for early training and some to Dubai, while those destined for racing in America remain in the U.S. Mohaymen and the homebred Bernardini colt, whose name Shagaf means “fond of” in Arabic,

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. reported that “he did everything right—he was like a professional. When I gave him his cue, he took off.” “I’m very proud of his effort. Coming into the race it was our plan was to be able to teach him something and possibly still win,” Brown said. “He was a little on-and-off the bridle down the back side, catching that dirt for the first time, but once he got in the clear he was much more comfortable. The fact he can secure a spot early with his positional speed, for a big horse, is going to come in handy later on.” Nichols reflected that both Brown and McLaughlin—who do not usually “talk up” their horses—are very upbeat about their potential chances in looking ahead to the possibility of the Kentucky Derby on May 7. Brown indicated that based on his observations of Mohaymen’s matches with Flexibility, he thinks Shagaf could have an edge in the future, Nichols related. Sheikh Hamdan is excited about both colts and keeps on top of every detail even while spending the winter far away in Dubai.
and Godolphin’s 2015 rallying fourth-place finisher Frosted. While Brown is relatively new to training for Shadwell, McLaughlin has worked with the team for 23 years and saw Sheikh Hamdan on a daily basis while he trained his runners in Dubai for six months annually from 1993 to 2003. Winning the Derby would be extra special with Mohaymen, he said. “It is very special for me to have this horse for Sheikh Hamdan because he is just a wonderful man,” McLaughlin said. “I’m very thankful that Sheikh Hamdan and Rick Nichols let me have this horse to train because this is a special horse. No one knew it, obviously, when they bought him that he was going to be this good, even though he was expensive, and I feel honored to have him in the barn. “He does everything right and has such a great mind. Nothing seems to upset him,” he said.
In fact, Nichols said the only wrinkle in the campaigns of both Mohaymen and Shagaf has been that some journalists get the meanings of their names wrong and have even argued with “He’s really happy and wants constant updates,” said Nichols, him about those names. Nichols pointed out that Shadwell has who added that the sheikh already is thinking about attending the to provide meanings to The Jockey Club when the names are Kentucky Derby again while hoping both Mohaymen and Shagaf submitted for approval, and he noted that Sheikh Hamdan, who are in the starting gate. uses Arabic names for the vast majority of his horses, is the best authority on this subject. That’s also the dream for McLaughlin and Brown, neither of whom has won a Kentucky Derby so far, although both have run Chuckling again, Nichols mused that the name of either Mohaymen solid contenders, with Brown’s first starter, Normandy Invasion, or Shagaf might yet have even further significance. finishing fourth in 2013. McLaughlin’s first Derby horse, Closing Argument, finished second in 2005, and he also has saddled Jazil “It might mean Derby Winner,” he declared. 38

Doha may be the capital of what is essentially a desert peninsula, but there is nothing dull or drab about this city. Even the Arabian Gulf outside my window is a lightshow of ghostly strings of floating lights as several party boats gently glide by.
O
n my first visit ten years ago, I found a city of skyscrapers, rising out of the desert and a racetrack, where the turf was green and the water cannons enormous. In those early years Qatar racing consisted mostly of Arabian races, with the odd thoroughbred race thrown in. The two main stud farms, Al Shahania, owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa and Umm Qarn, owned by Sheikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Thani, bred racing arabians, a slightly bigger and more robust version of their showing counterparts, who competed regularly at home and abroad. Thoroughbreds were few and far between. 44
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
Since that visit Qatar racing has been put firmly on the world map. In 2011 Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah Al Thani managed the impossible.Winning the Melbourne Cup with the Frenchbred Dunaden, a horse that was once a lead pony for Umm Qarn’s string of racing Arabians. Subsequently Sheikh Fahad in conjunction with his brothers, Sheikh Hamad and Sheikh Suhaim, formed Qatar Racing and Qatar Bloodstock. And following the establishment of Al Shaqab Racing by Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, who famously purchased Treve before her first Arc victory, Qatar started emerging as the new super power of world racing.

Arabian duel racing
Recent developments have been spearheaded by the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC), which runs the country’s only racecourse, under the patronage of the ruling Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. QREC’s establishment on the world circuit included the sponsorship of the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend at Longchamp, the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and since 2015, the five day Goodwood Festival. Interestingly the focus of QREC has now turned back to Qatar where the upgraded sand track has enabled an increase in fixtures, for thoroughbreds as well as arabians. According to Nasser Al Kaabi, QREC’s general manager, the club’s intentions and indirectly those of Sheikh Joaan and Al Shaqab can best be described as “bringing the competition home”. At the recent Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai he explained that concept further. “Since our major role internationally we want to elevate Qatar racing at home and it is time to make Qatar one of the major racing centres in the world. Now is the right time to start focussing on our local racing. The aim is to elevate it to the level of Dubai. Qatari racing is growing and we are focussing on international races. I think bringing international owners and trainers to Qatar will uplift the local trainers. The more competition, the better. It will definitely help improve our racing. I want people to experience Qatar, to experience how important racing is to us. We want to be the best.”
And it is that aim, to bring more international owners and trainers to Qatar that saw me return ten years later to attend the HH The Emir’s Sword Festival, comprising 22 races, for arabians, locally bred thoroughbreds and imported thoroughbreds. Thursday started with a visit to the Al Shahania Stud, where camels, falcons, saluki’s and of course exquisite arabians were the order of the day. There is nothing quite like having breakfast al fresco surrounded by palm trees and the high vaulted barns, where Al Shahania’s 90 odd broodmares and the arabian racing string, trained by resident trainer Julian Smart, reside. Then it was onwards to the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club for the first day’s racing. The Grandstand is an interesting mix of English country racing, with a distinctly eastern charm. Locals and international visitors are treated to an elegant afternoon tea in beautifully appointed lounges overlooking the home straight, while on course there is a delightful children’s play park dotted with a vast array of fast food outlets. While the famous The Torch hotel, mosques and a partially completed soccer stadium all form an arresting backdrop to the fast and furious racing on the turf below. Here the ladies took centre stage with the running of the Longines World Fegentri Championship for Lady Riders, a contest for amateur female jockeys. Hana Jurankova representing Austria, rode out an easy winner on the Mohammed Jassim Ghazali trained Saakhen (Ire). INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

The Blue Eye winning the HH The Emir’s Trophy
With the Festival attracting 17 international thoroughbred raiders from countries such as Bahrain, France, Germany, the UK and even South Africa, the Gr2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup for thoroughbreds over 1600m on turf, the second day’s feature was eagerly awaited. Al Shaqab’s Moheet (Ire) trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Frankie Dettori looked a picture, while Mike de Kock had sent Anaerobio (Arg) over from Dubai. The last of the raiders were the Bahrain pair of Bartack (Ire) and Baltic Knight (Ire) and it was the latter, ridden by Duran Fentiman, who brought home the spoils to the great delight of his connections. Jassim Mohammed Ghazali’s Roman Legend (Ire) flew up for second, while Moheet finished in third. Saturday brought a stark reminder that while thoroughbreds now make up 55% of the horses in training in Qatar, the arabian is still very close to the heart of this desert nation. For not only was the main feature the Gr.1 HH The Emir’s Sword Trophy, the third leg of the purebred arabian Triple Crown, but we were also treated to the heats and the final of the arabian duel races. And there is nothing quite like watching two riders and horses in full arabian costume battling it out down the sand track straight. Turbans and beaded tassels flying, the duelling horses charged down the track to loud cheers and applause from the crowd. The Festival’s main thoroughbred feature, the Gr 1 HH The 48

Emir’s Trophy presented by Longines (2400m turf) sees six international raiders, including the Qatar Derby deadheating pair of Rogue Runner (Ger) and Tannaaf (Ire) taking on ten local hopefuls. Current leading local trainer, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali ended his superb Festival on a high as the aptly named The Blue Eye (GB) took scant notice of the raiders, cantering home for a dominating four-length victory under leading jockey Harry Bentley for owner Mr. Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari. The Festival culminated with the running of the Gr.1 H.H.The Emir’s Sword Trophy. A close contest was expected between Al Shaqab’s Al Mourtajez (Fr), defending his crown and Al Shahania’s Assy (Qa), the winner in 2014. The expected duel ensued, but to everyone’s surprise Gazwan (GB), Assy’s stable companion, calmly charged past the duelling pair to claim victory by two lengths under an elated Richard Mullen. It was a one-two for trainer Julian Smart as Assy finished in second, relegating the game Al Mourtajez to third. Three great days of racing are over and it is time to head home. Qatar racing has come a long way since my last visit and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their horses, trainers and jockeys. They may not yet match the powerhouse that is Dubai, but with the dominant victory of The Blue Eye over his internationals rivals I can safely say that Nasser Al Kaabi and his team at QREC are certainly “bringing the competition home”.

CAPE PREMIER YEARLING SALE “Everybody here is chasing a dream, and trying to catch lightning in a tea cup, opined pedigree guru, Charles Faull. Undeterred by such a challenge, and inspired by the newly introduced million dollar incentive races conceived by Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS), buyers splurged at the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. It was held at the International Convention Centre on the 21st and 22nd of January, generating an exciting buzz in the racing fraternity.
C
onfirmation that breeders and buyers have quickly embraced the idea of a start-of-the-year auction in Cape Town was evident with an aggregate of R135,650,000 (USD 8.4 million) being realised. Logistics were smoothly processed at the venue to handle 20% more yearlings than the previous year. The catalogue has grown in size, without in any way compromising quality, as 226 Lots were sold compared to 187 in 2015. There was also a significant international presence which was reflected in the buyers list, and though the average and median finished a

marginal 6% down on 2015 figures, it was a robust sale. The final average was R600, 221 (USD 37 513) with the median mark set at R375, 000 (USD 23 437). When the numbers were collated after Day One was over, an aggregate sum of R71 530 000 (USD 4.47 million) had been attained at an average of R656 239 (USD 41 014) with a median price of R425 000 (USD 26 562). These are exceptionally strong figures, even taking local currency rand weakness into account, and included new South African records for a filly and colt sold at auction in this country. Lot 37, Silver Coin, a most handsome colt by former champion sire Silvano out of National Banker, was the subject of a frenetic bidding duel between Mayfair Speculators and Lady Christine Laidlaw. They chased the figure past the previous highest mark

for a colt sold at auction in South Africa of R5,2 million (USD 325 000) which was for a son of Dynasty purchased at CPYS 2015. Mayfair Speculators eventually prevailed, as the half brother to Grade 1 performer Halve the Deficit was knocked down for a whopping R6 million (USD 375 000). Further sensational action unfolded when Lot 81, Best Kept Secret entered the ring. The Captain Al filly by top class race-mare, Secret of Victoria is from an exceptional female line featuring Equus champion All Is Secret and impressive recent juvenile winner The Secret Is Out. Consigned by Klawervlei Stud, as agent on behalf of passionate racing man and effervescent pharmacist, Garth Miller, she was eventually knocked down to Tina Rau Bloodstock/MV Mangier for R5,25 million (USD 328 125) – the highest sum paid for a filly at a SA auction.
RU RN UN TO YO SASLAEL DT AY RERAED
Secret Of Victoria must be a candidate for Broodmare of the Year. The fertile mare has another foal at foot, and recently tested in foal, so Miller, who got double the price he was expecting, is trying to extend that winning formula. Amongst other big ticket deals, Ridgemont Stud got stuck in when buying Ariana Grande (by Silvano) for R2,25 million (USD 140 625), and former champion trainer Charles Laird secured Lot 59, an imported Bernardini filly for R2,4 million (USD 150 000). In one of the final sales of the night, astute bloodstock agent Jehan Malherbe signed at R2,7 million (USD 168 750) for Hear Him Roar. The colt will be trained by Dean Kannemeyer, who was responsible for sire Dynasty’s stellar racing career. “I trained the dam who was a speed filly and really tough. This is a quality colt,” he commented. Former jockey, now a trainer in Durban, Garth Puller mused about proceedings, “Obviously if the powerful buyers are all going for the same horses then big prices will be reached, but I still look at all horses, even those that may seem out of range, as there are lucky surprises to be found in the lowermiddle market.” Those words proved prophetic when a day later his brother Glen’s horse, Illuminator, an opportunistic 180K (USD 11 250) purchase at a CTS auction in March 2014, scored a momentous win in the Million Dollar over 1400m
at Kenilworth, to land his lucky connections an R8 million bonanza. Another jock to join the training ranks, Gavin van Zyl was in agreement with Puller, and also well-pleased after buying six yearlings for around R1,3 million (USD 81 250) at an eminently reasonable average of R225 000 (USD 14 062) on the first night, “ We did very well – this was a great sale for us,” he exclaimed after buying yearlings by Querari, Var and Oratorio, together with a couple by Pathfork, a stallion he suspects could be the real deal. Serious money was also invested at Friday’s session. Lot 183, Dynasty’s Blossom, a blue-blooded Dynasty filly fetched R4,5 million (USD 281 250). Lot 197, the colt Cot Campbell (by Trippi) understandably went for R3,3 million (USD 206 250) as he is out of the brilliant Grade 1 performer, Ebony Flyer, plus he sports Broodmare Of The Year, Sunshine Lover as his second dam. They were followed by an unnamed Silvano colt out of a full sister to champion sire Captain Al, signed for by leading trainer Dennis Drier at R2,6 million (USD 162 500). Drier was thrilled with his five purchases, declaring, “I could not be happier!” Michael Azzie is another top South African trainer typically very active at these sales, and he was determined to secure Lot 220, Greek Fire, a Dynasty colt out of Garland. He bid up to R3 million (USD 187 500) to

capture this offering from Maine Chance Farms, bred on the same cross that yielded champion race-mare Beach Beauty. Measured by aggregate, ruling champion breeders Klawervlei Stud (49 lots), Highlands Farm (36 lots), Drakenstein Stud (9 lots), Maine Chance Farms (22 lots) and Avontuur (9 lots) were the top vendors at the sale. The average return of R1.9 million (USD 118 750) per yearling for Drakenstein Stud was especially notable. Amongst the buyers, the top five spending slots went to Mayfair Speculators, Rainbow Beach Trading, John Freeman, Jehan Malherbe and Tina Rau Bloodstock/MV Magnier who accounted for close to R43 million (USD 2.68 million) in purchases over the two days.

South Africa’s finest stallions with proven records predictably found their way to the summit of the charts. Silvano averaged R1.1 million (USD 68 750) for his 22 desirable lots, Dynasty’s average was R1.3 million (USD 81 250) from 14 sought-after entries, with Captain Al’s 22 yearlings selling for an average of R901,000 (USD 56 312). Trippi is now well-entrenched in this country, so grossed R8 million (USD 500 000) from nine youngsters. Globe-trotting sire, Oratorio made a pleasing SA debut with his 25 yearlings realising just under R11 million (USD 687 500) to complement stalwart Avontuur resident, Var. What a Winter and Byword, brilliant racehorses during their careers in SA and France/UK, are new sires with potential who also attracted attention at the slickly staged CTS showpiece.

ALISTAIR COHEN AN AMAZING SOUTH AFRICAN TALENT
Alistair Cohen is a young man with a unique talent and a very bright future. Alistair is one of the country’s most respected horseracing commentators – A phenomenal feat at only 25 years of age.
Alistair’s love of horseracing started when he was very young, thanks to living less than a kilometre from Greyville Racecourse in Durban and having a dad who was a very avid punter!
“I always went to the races with him and loved it. I wanted to be a jockey but I became too strong for that so I thought the next coolest thing would be to be a commentator. That was at the age of about 4,” Alistair says. In 2003 when Alistair was just 12 years old, he entered a commentator’s competition run by Gold Circle. Someone recognised that this very young boy had amazing potential and told him to practice and that his chance would come. “It came and I am loving it,” he says. Alistair is a born and bred Durbanite who attended St Henry’s Marist Brothers College in Durban from Grade 0 until Matric. He now lives in Fourways, Johannesburg.
56

“There is NOTHING better than listening to the thunder of hooves run past the grandstand. The rush of adrenaline is indescribable. That’s what got me into the game. To shout home a winner that you have backed is also amazing,” he says about his love of all things horseracing. Alistair says that there is no such thing as a typical day and that every day is very different. “When commentating, I obviously look at the race card, form, and tendencies of horses but I always try and let things come naturally,” he says about not scripting his commentary excessively beforehand. The favourite part of his job is that no horserace is ever the same. His biggest challenge of the job, understandably, is getting something wrong as you really cannot take back anything said on air. His favourite South African horseracing event is without a doubt Champions Day. “I am a purist. I love the fact there are 9 feature races. High quality racing is what I love”. Most within the industry have that one special horse. “My favourite racehorse ever is London News because when he won the QEII Cup in Hong Kong in 1996, this was the very day that I decided to become a commentator. Right now my favourite horse is Smart Call because she is just damn special!” he says.
Alistair feels that there certainly is a window of opportunity for younger fans to become more interested in horseracing and that South Africa is taking steps in the right direction, although the challenge is to please both the established purists and the new generation of fans “Keeping customers happy and making the game as simple as possible for newbies is crucial,” he says The three things that Alistair cannot go without when traveling to events around the country? His binoculars, race card and a pen! Understandably, like any young talent with the world at his feet, Alistair will soon be looking to broaden his experience and ply his trade overseas. “I love South African racing dearly but there is so much for me to achieve and in other parts of the world, I can achieve them,” he says. Racing. It’s a Rush wishes Alistair everything of the best for his new adventures ahead.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A DAY AT THE RACES Racecourse tours at selected racecourses
For both established horseracing fans as well as those new to the sport, a day at the races can undoubtedly be a fun, social and exhilarating day out. To add to this experience, certain racecourses around South Africa are now offering interested racegoers the unique opportunity to tour the racecourse and get a first-hand behind the scenes look at all the different elements that make horseracing the thrilling sport that it is. Racecourse tours are offered at most race meetings in the Western Cape and Gauteng and on selected race days in Port Elizabeth. At Kenilworth and Durbanville Racecourses in the Western Cape as well as Turffontein in Johannesburg, a tour will begin at the information kiosk just before the running of race 3 on each specific race day (timing will depend on scheduled race times on each particular day). Patrons need to please pre-book for tours before the running of Race 2. Racecourse tours, which are hosted by professionals within the industry, will enable patrons to go to the parade ring, commentator’s box, visit the all-important stipes boardroom, weighing room and perhaps most enthralling is the visit to the starting stalls to watch the adrenalinefueled start of a horserace. Fairview Racecourse in Port Elizabeth offers race day tours on selected days when they have group bookings. Interested parties can call the racecourse to arrange this. Tours of Fairview can also include tours of the stables with permission from the relevant trainers. Few people appreciate all that goes into staging a successful horserace, a feat even more impressive when one realises that horseracing in South Africa takes place every single day of the year except on Christmas Day. The parade ring for example is a multipurpose area where the horses are taken for their pre-race parade. Horses are walked anti-clockwise to allow race 58
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
goers to assess the horse’s condition. This is usually done between eight and ten minutes before a race. There are also a number of race meeting officials at the edge of the parade ring at each race, and each official is looking at specific things. The commentator, for example, will be looking at and memorising the jockey silks so he can identify the horses as they cross the finish line. It is the judge who declares the official result of a race. The stipendiary stewards will be looking to see that the horse has the correct equipment such as horse shoes, tongue ties and blinkers and that the correct jockey is getting onto the correct horse. Racecourse tour leaders will impart valuable pointers and tips to interested patrons, such as the history of the racecourse, what attributes to look for to spot a winning horse in the parade ring, what happens in the weighing room as well as how the stipendiary stewards ensure that there is fair play in every race. Patrons who participate in a racecourse tour will never look at horseracing in the same way again! It is a sport of adrenaline, beauty and so much more. Racecourse tours are offered to interested members of the public free of charge. Unfortunately tours are not open to children under the age of 12. J&B MET

A VERY SMART CALL
T
he J & B Met is the race day most eagerly anticipatedthe final showdown of the Cape season. The buildup seems to take forever with the Grade 1 races starting in December with the Gr. 1 World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas, the Gr. 1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas, followed by the oldest race, the Gr. 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and finally the Gr. 1 Maine Chance Paddock Stakes. From these races come forth a host of stars.
belonged to another up country raider, the filly Smart Call. Two fillies and two colts, who would take up the challenge of the J & B Met? Futura the reigning champion was all the rage. His Queen’s Plate J & B Met double had earned him the 2015 Horse of the Year title, could he do it again? Mike de Kock with the mighty Horse Chestnut was the first to prove that a threeyear-old could win the Met but the champion trainer decided not to put his Guineas winner Noah From Goa up as a Met contender. While Silver Mountain’s connections decided to rather follow the money to the CTS Million Dollar race, Sean Tarry was very confident that Legal Eagle could step up and take the illustrious double. And somehow Smart Call, the filly who so convincingly won the Gr. 1 Paddock Stakes, did not feature in any permutations.
Silver Mountain was the first to make racegoers sit up and take notice as she strolled home in the Fillies Guineas with consummate ease. No wonder then that she took her place in the line-up of the Cape Guineas. That race however went the way of Noah From Goa, with Silver Mountain not disgraced in third. The Queen’s Plate saw another star writing his name in the history books as SA Derby winner Legal Eagle skipped clear, leaving a stellar field labouring in Yet her victory that day reminded me of another horse. lead it was her stride and her ears that stirred a memory. While the majority of horses race with their ears flat against their heads, only pricking them as the post looms, Smart Call runs with her ears all over the place. They are usually at half mast and pointing sideways, but can equally be pointing in any direction and seldom in unison. I remembered watching another champion whose ears also preferred not to follow the norm. His name was Horse Chestnut and it is here that we need to backtrack a bit as Smart Call’s story takes an interesting turn. Raced in South Africa by Mrs Oppenheimer, Horse Chestnut retired to the paddocks at Clairborne Farm in Kentucky, after his victory in the Gr. 3 Broward Handicap, his only USA race before injury curtailed his career. Mrs Oppenheimer wanted to send a mare to her champion horse and the unraced Christmas Tree filly, Great Verdict (AUS) out of Broodmare of the Year, Summoned was duly purchased at the Sydney Inglis
Sale. Great Verdict was purchased in foal to Zabeel (NZ) and produced a strapping colt that was to become the sire Grey’s Inn. Her date with Horse Chestnut though, produced a filly called Good Judgement (USA), who remained unraced and ended up at Mauritzfontein, the Oppenheimer’s stud in Kimberley. Good Judgement’s first four foals by resident sire Strike Smartly (CAN) produced three winners but nothing earth shattering. When Strike Smartly was sadly lost, Ideal World (USA), a stakes-winning son of Kingmambo (USA) out of Champion mare, Banks Hill (GB) joined the Mauritzfontein stallion roster in 2010. Good Judgement was selected as one of his first season mares and in 2011 a big bay filly was born. Mrs Oppenheimer believed in racing her stock herself and hence trainer Alec Laird was invited to visit and select some yearlings to train. Laird fell utterly and completely in love with Good judgement’s Ideal World filly, aptly named Smart Call INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

and she joined his yard at the Randjiesfontein Training Centre. Campaigned quietly and steadily Smart Call’s maiden win by 6,75 lengths, was offset by a couple of defeats to the likes of Majmu (AUS) and Siren’s Call and she remained under the radar. Victory in the Woolavington 2000 delivered her sire his first Grade 1 win. Smart Call was progressing nicely and Laird was in no hurry to push the buttons too soon. He figured the big gangly filly would only get better with time. How right he was. At four, Smart Call came into her own with victories in the Gr. 2 Ipi Tombi Challenge and the Gr. 1 Paddock Stakes. The filly however, had only ever run against her own sex and with her jockey Weichong Marwing battling a back injury, she was allowed to go off at 8/1 in the J & B Met. Legal Eagle meanwhile seemed unbeatable and his starting odds of 16/10 indicated that most expected the son of Grey’s Inn to follow in Futura’s footsteps and take the Queen’s Plate - J & B Met double. In the week leading up to the race, Weichong Marwing was forced to surrender the ride on Smart Call and Laird, playing his cards close to his chest, refused to name a replacement jockey.
pressure cooker that is the J & B Met, many thought that Laird was taking a huge gamble. In the end it wasn’t a gamble at all, it was sheer poetry in motion. The filly with the floppy ears and the long stride so reminiscent of her maternal grandfather, Horse Chestnut, simply blew the field away. At the 300m mark, with Legal Eagle comfortably leading, Van der Merwe pulled Smart Call out and sent her on her way. The filly effortlessly switched gears, leaving the field and Legal Eagle behind in a matter of strides. Van der Merwe allowed himself a backward glance, before a grin of sheer joy spread across his face, as he rode his filly to the line and victory.
The record books will record that Smart Call won in a time of 2.03:17 and by 3.5 lengths. It could easily have been more, with Van der Merwe merely steering her home under a hands and heels ride. What the record books won’t record is the ‘I was there’ moment that will live on forever in the memory of those present. A big bay filly with floppy ears, gliding down the turf with consummate ease, reminding all present of Horse Chestnut and his gliding run down that same stretch of turf in the 1999 J & B Met eight lengths clear. As Smart Replacing a jockey at the last minute in the season’s premier Call stands in quarantine, preparing for her six-month journey Gr. 1 race is no mean feat and with a field of 14 going to to the Breeders Cup, she follows in his footsteps - heading to post, all the top jockeys had long since been engaged. CHAMPION STUFF SNAITH RACING’S MET V8 By Robyn Louw
Being a champion is more a state of being than it is a statistic or a title, bestowed after the event. Champions are born and raised at home - they just go to the track to collect the applause. Of course there are champion horses, but you also get champion jockeys and champion trainers. And the championship state of being – the drive, the discipline and the razor sharp focus has usually loosened its tie, poured a drink and put its feet up a long time before the title pulls into the driveway. It sticks around a good deal longer too. 68

hey say it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a team to make a champion and if it’s multiple champions you’re looking for, then it seems you need a family. One such family is Snaith Racing, who have combined their considerable talents into a multi-functional, multi-dimensional and highly formidable team. Snaith Racing officially started when Chris first took out a license in August 1974. Having worked his way to the top of his profession, Chris handed over the reins to his sons in August 2000. Starting out more or less from scratch, through relentless hard work and determination, the boys have worked their way steadily up the training log. Chris and wife Sue are still around to advise and consult, but the boys have taken the bit and run with it. Their fresh and innovative marketing approach and social media presence has set new benchmarks in terms of accessibility and added a touch of glitz and old school glamour to local racing. Photo shoots of their horses on the beach or with high profile media personalities are eye catching and fun, their grooms are always impeccably turned out in race day blazers and boaters, their runners have custom designed browbands to match owners’ silks and the boys themselves take their jobs as ambassadors seriously – always smartly turned out and always with a considered and useable media soundbyte at the ready.
Mainly however, they grab headlines for their exploits on the track and most recently made waves when Justin Snaith saddled a record-breaking 8 runners on this year’s J&B Met card. SNAITH HQ The spiritually minded go in search of places with special energy – witches covens and religious sects make them sacred places. Without getting too mystic about it, driving through the Philippi gates of Snaith HQ, one finds yourself exhaling and smiling in surprise at the green expanse, large paddocks with groups of happily grazing horses and pockets of red deer. It has a relaxed, farm atmosphere.Whether it is indeed the atmosphere, something in the water, or something else altogether, there can be no arguing that it produces winners like few others. It’s worth noting that the South African trainers championship is decided on stakes won. Justin Snaith and the Snaith Racing Team were named South Africa’s champion trainers for the 2013/14 season with earnings of R19 490 725 and a winners to runners percentage of 15%. With a little over half the current season still left, Justin Snaith is topping the trainers log with earnings in excess of R12 million, but more importantly, the yard’s winners to runners ratio is running at a staggering 18%. their owners, consulting with his team and making notes before regrouping and collecting the next lot of saddles from the weighing room. Watching him work, it’s impossible not to be impressed by his incredible work ethic and professionalism as well as his stamina for managing to finish the day with a smile on his face.
MET DAY 2016 30 January 2016 was the 39th renewal of the J&B Met in Cape Town. With the Investec Derby and Majorca Stakes defecting to the CTS Million Dollar Day of Dreams, it left the 12 race Met card with two Gr1’s, a Gr2, a listed race and 8 handicaps. While many fretted about the programme, Snaith Racing, in their usual fashion focussed their energies on the job at hand and came up trumps.
“It’s one of the hardest seasons Justin has worked,” says Jonathan. “He’s been incredibly focussed, he drove the truck to the beach himself, he never missed a day and I think that’s reflected in the results. We’ve had our highest strike rate ever - not easy when you’ve got a large string. Every season one struggles with viruses and setbacks of one form or another. This season we tried something new – we changed a bunch of stuff and OWNERS ARE ENTITLED TO BIG DAYS Speaking from their Philippi base, Jono Snaith reflects, “On Met moved things around and it’s worked like a bomb. We’ve had day we had 32 runners after scratchings. Owners race to have no viruses the entire season. We’ve had no bugs and the horses fun and part of that fun is to have a runner on a big day and have all been well. I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve had we feel our owners are entitled to it, so we put everything into such a great season. It’s been long and hard, but all the horses these big race days. Obviously there’s only one winner per race, have pulled up well, which I think is a credit to the yard.” so having multiple runners puts a lot of pressure on us to keep MET DAY people happy as not everyone is winning.” Justin Snaith previously saddled 7 winners on a single card at PE’s It’s a valid point, but Team Snaith are nothing if not consummate Fairview track on 12 May 2013. Were they trying to go one professionals and they try their damndest as a photographic better on Met day? “Quite a bit of planning went into Met day overview of the day’s events shows. There are photos of Justin and this is by far the strongest squad of horses we’ve ever had. saddling up, talking to owners, instructing jockeys, watching each Queen’s Plate was a good day for us – we had 5 winners and a race, leading in his horses, delivering speeches on the winner’s lot of unlucky losers, which was a good indicator that the string podium, checking over the placed horses and also rans, debriefing was well, so we had our hopes up. Our main focus was the Met, 70

but it was a very competitive card and many of the races were wide open. Obviously one still needs things to go your way, but we were on a 19% win rate and the yard and the horses were all in such a good space that we knew we were bound to have a good day. I have to say that having jockeys like Piere Strydom and S’manga Khumalo also makes a huge difference.” They won the first 6 races on the trot with Fire Master for Henry and Patricia Devine; Star Express for Warren Laird, Mr & Mrs Dave Whitelaw and Mr Ragunan; Acaciawood for Greg Bortz, Bryn Ressel and Braam van Huyssteen; Sergeant Hardy for Veronica Foulkes; Qing for Mr Alec and the Hon Mrs Gillian Foster and Captain Swarovoski for Michael de Broglio.
They’re both great horses who have already done it all and the day’s results were no reflection on their ability, but I know there were a lot of disappointed people out there and we were as disappointed. It obviously wasn’t meant to be, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. I don’t think we’ll ever have 2 stronger runners or have them as well as we did for the Met. We’d been having a good day, but it was hard to hide that we were disappointed by the main race. Having said that, one couldn’t think of a better winner and for a filly to win it for a filly, was really nice. Jessica Slack is so passionate and particularly as it was her own horse and her own stallion. It couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person and it was a really good story for the day,” he says sportingly.
TOUGHING IT OUT Trainers have to take the highs with the lows and stay focussed on the job at hand. There were still four more races to get through and only half an hour between the Met and race 9, in which Ovidio equalled their 2013 feat of seven wins. Jono says, “Ovidio was something of a surprise. It was a very strong field, particularly at the weights, and just about everything that Then it was on to the big one. “We’ve never won the Met and could go against him in the race did, but in the end he won well. I’m starting to think it’s jinxed,” he says with heartfelt exasperation. Perhaps we should run him like that more often!” “When the first half of the day went so well, we half expected something to go wrong and I suppose it was inevitable that it Although their three runners in the 10th disappointed, the team would be the Met. We really wanted to win for Gaynor (Rupert) had high hopes for races 11 and 12 and in many ways, that’s and Jack (Mitchell) and we threw the kitchen sink at Legislate when the story really started. Khumalo and then bolted back to the parade ring. “Justin had just got back to the box and watched it all unfold on TV. He raced back downstairs to be told that S’manga had to go to hospital and the horse was scratched. Fortunately the Stipes were accommodating and allowed him a few minutes to find a replacement and the only available rider was Lucian Africa. Understandably Mutzi was very nervous, so Justin ran all the way to the start with him. In the race the wheels came off a little, which is understandable under the circumstances and we thought he did very well to still finish 4th.” They had three runners for the last race. Anthony Delpech was carded to ride Bianzina, but was unable to take the ride and with no suitable replacement available, the Fosters decided to scratch. With S’manga on his way to hospital, they needed a jockey for Baritone and Chris and Justin ran to the jockey room to find who was available. With no senior jockeys in sight, jockey academy master Terrance Walsh suggested apprentices Heavelon van den Hoven and Shadlee Fortune. “Heavelon won the million dollar, he’s my guy,” said Justin. They were just turning to go when the news came through that Piere Strydom couldn’t take the ride on True Master and so the ride went to Shadlee Fortune. In the event, Heavelon rode an accomplished race to win by 1.5 lengths and seal their 8th victory. “Shadlee rode a bit of a shocker –I don’t think True Master has ever been to the front in 72

his life,” laughs Jono. “But Heavelon never panicked and he rode a decent race and got us our historic 8th win on the day. If it wasn’t for him, it wouldn’t have happened. What a great story.” SPECIAL OWNERSHIP “Baritone belongs to Michael de Broglio. Our friend and bloodstock agent, John Freeman, only ever bought two horses for him – Captain Swarovski and Baritone and on the day we had two runners for him and both were winners. Of our 8 winners, half of those have been with us from the start such as Ken Truter, who gave us our first big break when we were just starting out. Marie Fowler from JCF Motors has been with us for years, Lloyd Jaffe’s family had horses with my dad and my dad trained for Veronica Foulkes’ mother. It was special to have winners for them on the day.” FUTURE For now, their immediate focus is to achieve 200 winners for the season. They nearly managed it 2 years ago when the last meeting of the season was postponed due to weather. “And we want to win as many Group 1’s as possible. Our strike rate is very important, but it’s not just getting the statistic, it’s being consistent, which we’re very proud of.” They’re running at a 19% strike rate in Cape Town, 17% in PE and are just getting started in Johannesburg. Both Jono and Justin are recently married and both are expecting, so with the next generation of Snaiths on the way, you can bet there’s plenty more to come.

Louisville, Kentucky may have only recently become one of the country’s top food destinations, but it has long been home to outstanding fine dining and eclectic casual fare. JACK FRY’S When you think of Louisville dining destinations, Jack Fry’s is a classic not to be overlooked. As you step in the doors, you are transformed to Old Louisville in the 1930’s, when it first opened, where gambling and bootlegging was a sign of the times, and Al Capone himself frequented the restaurant. Jack Fry was a fan of the ponies, along with many other sports, and the evidence lines the walls of the establishment in the form of many historical photographs. While Jack Fry’s closed for a time in the 1970’s and 80’s, it has since revived itself as a staple on the dining scene. The menu is a mix of traditional and trendy, specializing in modern American and Southern fare. They pride themselves on their loyal clientele.

Anoosh Bistro is a comfortable place to enjoy a meal, with a menu varied enough to enjoy multiple times per week even. Chef Anoosh Shariat continues to offer some dishes reminiscent of those he served more than a decade ago at his namesake restaurant, Shariat’s in Crescent Hill. “I really want to keep presentations simple and the emphasis on local and regional foods,” he told Insider Louisville prior to its opening. A longtime vegetarian, himself, Shariat also offers many complex meatless options. Featured Dish: literally any dessert (Anoosh Shariat is an accomplished pastry chef, best desserts in town) The dessert menu changes daily. Some fan favorites include the bread pudding, a white chocolate banana cream pie, and the traditional crème brulee. All are of course prepared in house, are decadently delicious, and beautifully plated. It sounds cool, it looks cool, and the menu, while succinct, is anything but ordinary. Just like the restaurant’s name (translating to “The Hunt”) suggests, the menu includes a tantalizing combination of flavors and spices in each of their varied items; from sweetbreads to wagyu steak, and pheasant to foie gras. Featured Dish: Fennel Citrus Fried Rabbit The rabbit is braised first and then fried and served with grilled fingerling potatoes, haricot verts, and a peppered glaze. Braising the meat first allows it to retain an incredible amount of moisture and the fennel and citrus flavor is imparted to the rabbit during this process. EXCITEMENT AT SUMMER WIND FARM She’s all legs and spunk and the bluest of blue blood. Text and Images by Michele MacDonald
B
orn on February 13, a quiet Saturday, not long before the dawn of Valentine’s Day and a soft snowfall across Lexington, Kentucky, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s new half sister—by leading American sire Tapit—undoubtedly is one of the world’s most valuable foals of 2016. Bred by Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Farm, the chestnut was “already spoiled rotten” at only nine days old, reported farm manager Mark Moloney as the filly cantered circles in a spacious paddock and then fearlessly strode over to a photographer to nuzzle the visitor. The filly’s dam, Littleprincessemma, a ten-year-old by Yankee Gentleman, also is outgoing and people-oriented. She has given many of her characteristics to the foal, from her own chestnut
color splashed with white to her bold nature. Acquired for $2.1 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale, Littleprincessemma will be bred back to American Pharoah’s sire, Pioneerof the Nile, this season. American Pharoah was her second foal, and after his birth in 2012, she produced a full sister for breeder Ahmed Zayat’sZayat Stables in 2014 now named American Cleopatra, and a full brother for Summer Wind in 2015 named Irish Pharaoh. Lyon said Irish Pharaoh has been sold privately but that she could not disclose the buyer or the price due to a confidentiality agreement. The flashy colt, who has a white stripe down his face and four white stockings, has developed well and “will have every opportunity to make a racehorse,” she said. The colt has remained in the United States, at least for now. Lyon said she plans to keep Littleprincessemma’s newborn Tapit filly, rather than offer her at auction as a yearling, as she does most of the Summer Wind foals. Around the same time as the Tapit filly was born at Summer Wind, American Pharoah began covering his first mares at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud near Lexington. The first mare to visit him, Coolmore’s Untouched Talent, the daughter of Storm Cat who produced Grade 1 winner Bodemeister, was pronounced in foal in late February. American Pharoah is adapting well to life as a stallion, Coolmore reported.“He has put on roughly 150 pounds and is really letting down into an imposing individual. He is a pleasure to do anything with—we’ve never had a stallion here with a temperament like his. He’s taken to breeding like a pro but has retained his kind nature; he’s still the same gentleman he has always been,” said stallion manager Richard Barry. Other mares among those initially covered in the early part of the breeding season by American Pharoah include Arch’s Gal Edith, dam of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner I’ll Have Another; Grade 1 winners Sunset Glow and Damson; record-breaking Pepper’s Pride, who was undefeated in 19 starts, and Global Finance, dam of Acapulco, winner of the 2015 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

An idea that started out of sheer frustration is becoming a global enterprise for one of Cape Town’s much-loved trainers, Eric Sands. Sands has been a trainer for longer than he cares to remember and despite preferring a small string of around 30 horses, he has trained some of the greats such as Jungle Warrior, Perfect Promise and Horse of the Year and Champion Sprinter Flobayou.

Sands’s yard in Milnerton is also the destination of choice for visiting trainers. With stars such as J J The Jet Plane, Via Africa, Same Jurisdiction, Zambezi River, Carry On Alice, Legal Eagle and most recently the J & B Met winner Smart Call all launching their campaigns from there. Walking around the peaceful yard, with inquisitive heads poking out between hanging fly fringes, it is not hard to see why trainers like Alec Laird, Duncan Howells and Sean Tarry prefer to have their horses there. Here the horse comes first. Sands is one of few trainers who can be found in his yard all day long. For him training a racehorse is about getting it to be its best and that means picking up the tiniest problem and sorting it out immediately. From personally checking legs and leavings every morning to supervising work, Sands is hands on and he is not above going beyond the call of duty to solve a problem. He has been known to provide fussy
eaters with piles of different feed options to see which particular brand captures their fancy. And who can forget the headstrong Captain Harry going down to the start with what can best be described as a rope hairnet around his muzzle, attached to his noseband. “Well he concentrated on that net so much that he forgot to run away with the jockey. They both arrived at the start in exemplary fashion, the net was removed and Harry ran a good race”, explains Sands with a twinkle in his eye.“Any horseman can be a success if you just spend time with your horses and look for the small things” he adds. It is this ability to tackle all problems head on that saw Sands developing his own saddle pads in 2011. “I was unhappy with what jockeys were giving me to put on my horses. Their pads were never to my liking and I wanted something for my own horses, as we were getting skin diseases and horses coming back INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

He is responsible for importing over 100 mares and fillies to SA as well as managing broodmare bands in the Cape – including 15 mares of his own as an SATBA member – and consulting for farms. Regularly buying for racing and pinhooking, David bought a 2015 Grade 1 winning juvenile as a yearling and runs syndicates and racing groups as well as managing horses in training for individual clients. David also manages and promotes seven South African stallions. Marie Chin caught up with him recently.

MC: David - how are you doing with your new Hintlesham Racing Group in Cape Town? Any Grade 1 winners in there as well? DA: All the 2 year olds “could be anything” and one is CTS US$ Million qualified so who knows? The 3 year old won soon after we launched so it’s going really well for the people who are “in”. That underlines one of our user-friendly features. If coming into a yearling, there can be a very long wait before you can see your baby backed and learning. Our way you come in when already running or not far off. MC: How does it work? DA: 4 nicely bred fillies in Calendar 2016 up to May 2017. Nothing to pay up front and guaranteed fixed monthly costs – no risk of nasty vet bills! A 3yo winner and 3x2yos – one due to run maybe before you publish! People are in for 8% up to 25%, paying a fixed monthly amount and earning their share of any win and place money. The origination, pre-training and

early race training has already been paid for. So it is akin to a late-starting lease but the lessor doesn’t keep a big chunk of the stake money just a small handling fee. And we offer a bonus of a share in net sales proceeds (if a horse is sold) as a mark of appreciation, even though people have not bought equity. MC: And what sort of people are coming in? DA: In this group we have people from South Africa, UK, Ireland and France so far. There is room for one or two more percentages which can be held by individuals or couples or friends or companies. MC: Are you happy with those developments? DA: Yes and No. With the people participating – more than happy and very appreciative – they would make a brilliant multi-national dinner party. But it is difficult to get the message across in South Africa outside racing people. We ourselves are very well known for looking after first time participants and have
had some in SA who love it. But not many. With racing operated largely by gaming organisations, there is a funding benefit that some other countries do not enjoy. But it makes it inevitable that the betting is the main impression most non-racing South Africans have. But the racing opportunity is so much more: the horses themselves, the sporting event, days out, stable visits, socialising, and the thrill of shouting your horse home whether on course or live on-line. Imagine football TV pundits discussing the odds on winning, losing, first scorer etc. Of course horseracing’s fabric has a major betting element which is a big part of its colourful attraction but it could still be reported to a sporting nation like South Africa as a fascinating, complex sport. Some journalists and Tellytrack presenters get that but have little time and their audience is limited. MC: DA:
But surely racing really is dominated by betting? In Japan in the 80s racing’s reputation had been dodgy INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

for years. Japan Cup Day saw the betting turnover of half a season in some countries. But outside racing.... you wouldn’t want your daughter to marry one. Then, with two masterstrokes, all that changed. Racing’s appeal as a sport went countrywide and an enlightened subsidy of good mare imports was offered. No rock bands on course like UK no fashion shows. Now Japan has national hero horses whose races stop the traffic and routinely breeds some of the highest rated thoroughbreds in the world. There is still just as much betting . MC: So what now? DA: Aside from several extremely important major players – mirrored in other countries – the number of buyers of racehorses is limited by recession and by the outreach of the sport in South Africa. What concerns me most are two things: the lack of a next generation in all departments – owning, breeding and farming, training, sales work, admin. There are just a few notable young exceptions. Then with a fairly static gene pool, a thinned out and stretched sales programme, recession, an EU ban and a dramatically weak currency, there is also very little international interaction of the sort that fuels vibrancy. The result is that some excellent racing facilities and generally good bloodstock production are relatively unfulfilled when it could all be wonderful. MC: What sort of international interaction do you mean? DA: Young people in the industry learn by working round the world on farms, at sales, in training centres. That is largely missing in both directions. Sales companies in Newmarket 96

and Kildare remark to me about the rarity of SA visitors or of buying by consultants for South Africa. They have three dozen nationalities attending some sales buying at all levels. Although they don’t have South Africa strongly on their radar, they mention it me because I have known them for donkeys’ years and am known to have a South African flag on my hat. We still work hard to “mine for nuggets” for South Africa and even with budgets limited by the rand we have some success in buying only good black type up top. People see that happening also we have a good non-South African readership of our SA-content e-newsletters which lead people to chat to me about SA. MC: Do you think we can do something about all this? DA: We must. What is good about racing and breeding in South Africa is a very long list of good things in a magical country. MC: Are you trying? DA: Yes I have made some proposals with regard to image, outreach as a sport and a career, as well as international public relations but I have no formal accreditation other than as a breeder and colour holder. There are so many entities and organisations that consensus is difficult to achieve. Sometimes I have been baulked by authority seeing me as a “foreign agent” but I don’t feel quite as foreign as all that and I am not the sort of agent that they mean. On the much happier other hand, many great friends, colleagues, partners and clients with whom I deal in the course of my business in South Africa do not think like that at all. Experience of both home and abroad is generally useful. I am certainly not giving up.

AFRICAN HORSE SICKNESS
DISCUSSIONS AT THE ASIAN RACING CONFERENCE African horse sickness (AHS) is and will always be a devastating disease. Its effect on the export of South African horses for competition and sale purposes is well documented and yet we seem to be on an endless treadmill of export ban after export ban. Will there ever be a light at the end of the tunnel?
O
the constant export bans and lengthy export protocols have on the industry. This was followed by Australian veterinarian Dr Evan Sergeant, who shed light on the progress that has been made towards reopening exports out of South Africa directly into the EU.
Hence it was refreshing to see the topic of South Africa Breeding and AHS on the list of discussion items at the recently held Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai. In fact South Africa and its export problems came under scrutiny not once but twice. First up was former multiple Champion Breeder, Mick Goss (Summerhill Stud), who eloquently gave an insight into the South African breeding industry and the crippling effect
Goss explained that South Africa’s foal crop had decreased from around 5000 in 1995 to a mere 3400 in 2014. This is partly due to the global meltdown and the recession, but also due to the frustrations surrounding the inability of breeders to freely offer their stock to global markets. He pointed out that despite the extraordinarily onerous quarantine protocols that our horses are subjected to, they continue to excel on the international stage.
verseas it has become a taboo topic. Nothing kills a conversation faster than mentioning what we consider to be unfair and unnecessary lengthy quarantine procedures that our horses are subjected to. The standard retort is straight forward “it kills horses”. Yes it does, but so do a host of equine diseases.

Variety Club wins the Champion Mile in Hong Kong
“It takes us six months to get to Dubai, yet South African horses have won fifty per cent of the World Cup races at Meydan. We have won six UAE Derbies, four Sprints and three Godolphin Miles. Our horses have earned their stripes. Not only have our horses excelled in Dubai, but they have won races in the UK, the USA, Australia and Hong Kong”, said Goss. “Yet despite the technological age and the vast expense we have spent on our facilities, it is more difficult than ever to export our horses.” He added that South Africa exported 450,000 horses during World War I and II and with exports continuing to this day the virus has never been exported to any country. Goss concluded with a call for reasonable and sensible quarantine protocols in order to get the South African thoroughbred back in its rightful place in world racing. So where are we currently in the ongoing struggle of exporting horses safely and effectively from South Africa? A passport glitch meant that Australian veterinarian Dr Evan Sergeant instead of senior epidemiologist of the Western Cape Veterinary Services, Dr John Grewar, took to the podium in Mumbai to enlighten the assembled delegates on the progress made in getting the current export ban to the EU lifted. Inspections and an EU audit in 2013 highlighted some deficiencies in the management of the conditions of the EU protocol which was based on the 1990 OIE AHS code despite the code having undergone multiple revisions since then. Nonetheless, South Africa set out to tackle the deficiencies head on resulting in a number of 100 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
improvements. One of the main issues, the disconnect between government and industry, was successfully resolved. Both parties are now working together to resolve issues and to put structures in place, such as the establishment of an industry export task team and the formation of the Equine Health Fund. It was the Equine Health Fund that commissioned Dr Sergeant, Director of AusVet Animal Health Services, to firstly assist the South African Government to develop a more effective surveillance system in the AHS Controlled Area in the Western Cape and more recently to produce a scientifically based risk analysis on exporting from South Africa. The surveillance plan has been in place for the last two years and Dr Sergeant was happy to report that there was now a very effective surveillance program across all AHS zones in the Western Cape. Another change is the way in which private veterinarians report suspected cases of AHS via the South African Equine Veterinary Association. Since January 2016 negative reporting is now in place on a countrywide basis. Thus, instead of only positive cases being reported, veterinarians can now submit negative reports after visiting equine properties. The sentinel surveillance programme on 150 odd horses across the AHS Controlled Area in the Western Cape remains ongoing and these horses are now all being tested by PCR on a monthly basis. Dr Sergeant also touched on the history of outbreaks in the AHS Controlled Area since 1997, with the analysis indicating that outbreaks in the Western Cape are strongly seasonal, only
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
101
occurring from February to June. He added that none of the past outbreaks had ever occurred in the AHS Free Zone where horses are quarantined pre-export. Another interesting finding was that except for the 1999 outbreak, the 2004, 2011 and 2014 outbreaks appeared to have been caused by the AHS vaccine rather than a wild virus. In order to prevent this happening in future, all vaccinations in the AHS protection and surveillance zones are now restricted to the winter months of June to October. This is expected to significantly reduce the risk of outbreaks occurring in the AHS Controlled Area during the high-risk period of the year. Furthermore the OIE conducted a ring trial in 2015, with three RT PCR tests selected as the most promising tests for further validation. The Agüero test has already been incorporated by the OIE Biological Standards Committee and Professor Alan Guthrie’s test was submitted to OIE in January 2016 for further evaluation. Earliest validation of the tests is expected in 2017 at the OIE General Assembly. Dr Sergeant stressed however, that the RT PCR’s are currently able to be utilised by importing countries given that they have performed consistently well under rigorous challenges. Interestingly, Dr Sergeant stated that, given the history of seasonality of the disease, he could not understand the rationale behind the 24 month ban each time an outbreak occurred. He did concede that ruling existed in the current EU legislation, but that it did not preclude other countries from negotiating new protocols on a bilateral basis with South Africa. Regarding the EU’s current temporary suspension, if there are no further outbreaks 102 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
in the AHS Controlled Area, South Africa will be in a position to appeal to the EU to lift the suspension on 17 June 2016. Dr Sergeant cautioned, however that the bureaucratic process was likely to be slow and that practically this could take some time. The detailed export risk analysis performed by Dr Sergeant was ground-breaking in that for the first time, it provided a scientifically based probability of South Africa exporting an infected animal. On the assumption that horses are exported from an OIE recommended vector protected pre-export quarantine in the AHS Controlled Area, and PCR tests are performed prior to and during a 21 day quarantine, the probability of an infected horse being undetected equates to 1 in 187 000 exports. By adding post arrival quarantine and an addition PCR test, the probability is reduced approximately 12 fold. Additional risk mitigating measures include restricting exports to the seasonally free time of the year, adding additional PCR tests and increasing the length of quarantine. According to Dr Sergeant there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. “South Africa clearly does not want to export the virus and they are doing everything they can to safely export their horses. I believe South Africa has lifted their game and I think they will pass the test once the ban is lifted. Personally I do believe the risk of AHS being exported from SA is absolutely negligible”, he concluded. Finally there seems to be a positive shift in the longstanding AHS saga and with no further outbreaks before June 2016, I think we can finally look forward to resuming exports to the EU and other trading partners in the near future.

DUBAI WORLD CUP
CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE AROUND THE GLOBE
While the Dubai World Cup is relatively young compared to the sport’s hallowed proving grounds for future sires, such as the 2000 Guineas or the Kentucky Derby, the richest race on the globe already has yielded some breed-changing winners in the 20 years it has been run from 1996 through last year.
U
nder the guiding hand of Sheikh Hamdan, a keen follower of pedigrees and a shrewd judge of conformation, Shadwell Farm in Lexington and Shadwell Stable have evolved with an overriding goal of winning Classic races.
Sheikh Mohammed created the Dubai World Cup to both promote his shining Arabian Gulf emirate and as an Olympictype competition, and the race has lived up to both goals. The continuing—and now extensive—influence of many of the horses who reached the finish line first in the testing desert contest over 2000 meters is an added bonus fitting of the race’s top-tier stature.
Millennium, Street Cry and Curlin. More recent winners, such as Victoire Pisa, Monterosso and Animal Kingdom, are poised to see if their progeny can leave a mark on history. Sheikh Mohammed’s homebred Singspiel, a Grade/Group 1 winner in Canada, Japan and England in addition to Dubai, not only became the first—and still only—Dubai World Cup winner to sire a winner of the same race, with his son Moon Ballad from his first crop, he also left three other Group 1 winners in Dubai World Cup program races—Dar ReiMi, Eastern Anthem and Solow—as well as a Breeders’ Cup champion in Lahudood.
Inaugural winner Cigar certainly ranks among the most brilliant for, among other achievements, his 16-race winning streak and two American Horse of the Year titles. He also is perhaps the most disappointing in that he failed to be fertile and could not pass along his abilities.
By Sheikh Mohammed’s Breeders’ Cup Turf winner In the Wings and out of American champion and Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song, by Halo, the cleverly named Singspiel began life at Kildangan Stud in Ireland in 1992. The half brother to influential sire Rahy emerged as a global force as a four-year-old when he captured the Japan Cup and Canadian International Stakes and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
However, the very next winner, Singspiel, has left a legacy that is not yet complete, as have subsequent champions Dubai

Sheba before adding two other Group 1 events to his resume on turf in England and retiring with earnings of nearly $6 million. While Singspiel’s daughter Dar Re Mi and son Eastern Anthem both won the Dubai Sheema Classic at 2400 meters on grass, his miler son Solow showed an inclination toward brilliance when annexing the 2015 Dubai Turf, a race he is aiming at again this year and which would be his sixth career Group 1 victory if he succeeds. Singspiel’s lineup of major performers also includes Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Lahudood, Prix de Diane (French Oaks) winner Confidential Lady, multiple Grade/Group 1 winner Hibaayeb, Japanese Group 1 winner AsakusaDen’en, Ascot Gold Cup winner Papineau, Australian Group 1 winner Rewaayaand Del Mar Oaks winner Singhalese.

Sadly, Singspiel was euthanized at age 18 in 2010, the year his last foals were born, after developing laminitis. To date, his offspring have accounted for 21 Grade/Group 1 wins globally. “He was an outstandingly tough racehorse who was able to pass it on to many of his progeny who performed around the world. He has been admired and supported industry-wide in Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States, where he has produced racehorses of the highest caliber,” praised Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson. But even greater than Singspiel, despite lacking the same opportunity at stud, was another horse bred by Sheikh Mohammed, the star-crossed Dubai Millennium.
Dubawi
Those lucky enough to be in attendance when Dubai Millennium—a son of Seeking the Gold out of Colorado Dancer, by Shareef Dancer—ran away with the 2000 Dubai World Cup still talk about the electricity of his victory, from the time he sprinted out of the gate until he crossed the finish line. His time of 1:59.50 remains the record for the race and Dubai issued a special stamp to commemorate his triumph.
It would take extensive space to list Dubawi’s significant progeny, but he has 23 Group 1 winners while siring 15% stakes winners and 10% group winners in his first six crops. He is standing the 2016 breeding season for £225,000—equal to about $320,000 and one of the highest stud fees in the world, topping America’s leader Tapit, who stands for $300,000—at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud outside Newmarket.
Dubai Millennium was, like Singspiel, a horse who won at the highest levels on turf and dirt. Thus, his sudden death from grass sickness after one partial season at stud could have been one of the Thoroughbred breed’s biggest losses; he left only 56 offspring behind.
Dubawi’s sons Makfi, Night of Thunder, Worthadd and New Bay have all won Classic races in Europe, while son Mubtaahij won the rich UAE Derby on the 2015 Dubai World Cup program and is expected to return in this year’s Dubai World Cup.
One of those foals was Dubawi, who went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas and the Prix Jacques Le Marois and who has risen to be one of the world’s most important sires. In 2015, he led all sires standing outside of Japan, which has the world’s highest purses, with progeny earnings of $27.5 million and 11 Grade/ Group 1 winners.
Other sons of Dubawi also were preparing to run on this year’s World Cup program, including Postponed, an English Group 1 winner in 2015 who won a Dubai Sheema Classic prep on Super Saturday, and Sheikhzayedroad, already a Grade 1 winner who captured the Nad Al Sheba Trophy on March 3, another launching pad to the Dubai Sheema Classic.
Dubawi reached 50 group stakes winners faster than any other sire in history, according to Darley, and through early March of this year, his progeny have accounted for 34 Grade/Group 1 wins worldwide. Remarkably, he has carried on Dubai Millennium’s Dubai World Cup legacy with two winners to date in the world’s richest race, Monterosso for Godolphin in 2012 and Prince Bishop, the former Godolphin runner who ran in the colors of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, in 2015.
Around the globe, Dubawi has been represented by the likes of Australian Group 1 sprinters Shamal Wind, Srikandi and Tiger Tees; by Hong Kong Derby and Hong Kong Cup winner AkeedMofeed and two-time Hong Kong champion sprinter Lucky Nine; Deutsches Derby winner Waldpark; Dubai and Italian Group 1 winner Hunter’s Light, who was victorious on all-weather and turf at the elite level, and multiple American Grade 1 winner Dubawi Heights.

Street Cry
In addition to Dubai Millennium, Dubawi and Singspiel, Sheikh Mohammed also bred 2002 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry, a horse whose influence will be felt for years to come even though he tragically died at age 16. A neurological condition experienced after he had been shuttled to Australia for the 2014 Southern Hemisphere breeding season led to Street Cry’s death. A solid, robust horse, Street Cry was by Machiavellian and out of Irish Oaks winner Helen Street, by Troy. Like Singspiel, he was foaled in Ireland, where American-based trainer Eoin Harty picked him out of a field to train for Sheikh Mohammed’s new Americanbased Godolphin juvenile stable; he finished an eye-catching third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and went on to win the UAE 2000 Guineas but missed an intended start in the Kentucky Derby whensidelined by injury. Street Cry returned at four to triumph in the World Cup over a field that included Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner and Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Sakhee. When retired to Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, Street Cry leapt to prominence immediately as his first crop included American two-year-old champion and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense and America’s 2010 Horse of the Year and 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta. To date, Street Cry’s progeny have amassed 39 Grade/Group 1 wins in some of the world’s most prominent races. They include Shocking in the 2009 Melbourne Cup; Winx in the 2015 Cox Plate; New Year’s Day in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile; multiple Grade 1 winner and sire Street Boss, and
Caulfield Guineas and UAE 2000 Guineas winner Long John. “His contribution to the breed has been significant and we have been so fortunate to have him. He will be sorely missed by everyone,” Ferguson said after Street Cry’s death. The only Dubai World Cup winner to have emerged as a potent sire that has not been bred and owned by Sheikh Mohammed is Stonestreet’s 2008 victor Curlin, who currently is standing for a $100,000 stud fee at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. North America’s all-time leading money earner with $10,501,800 while racing, Curlin is the sire of this year’s Dubai World Cup contender Keen Ice, the only horse to defeat Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in 2015 when he surged in deep stretch to capture the Travers Stakes. Curlin also has sired 2013 Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice and 2015 American champion three-year-old filly Stellar Wind even though he has only three crops of racing age older than three-year-olds in 2016. It seems likely the best is yet to come from Curlin’s progeny. As the quality of competition continues to rise with the $10 million purse, glossy gold whips and huge gold trophy proving major magnets to the Dubai World Cup, history is awaiting the performance of winners Victoire Pisa, Monterosso and Animal Kingdom in their fledgling stud careers. They will all INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

The stories of other past Dubai World Cup winners are varied. They are: 1998—Silver Charm, a Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner now retired to Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, after a quiet stud career at Three Chimneys Farm and the Japan Bloodstock Breeders’ Association Shizunai Stallion Station. He had 15 stakes winners in the United States. 1999—Almutawakel, a son of Machiavellian who raced for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum and also won a Group 1 race on turf in France, was euthanized in 2007 due to chronic arthritis. He sired four Group 1 winners, including New Zealand champion Wahid and Derby Italiano winner Awelmarduk. 2001—Captain Steve, by Fly So Free, sired nine stakes winners in Japan prior to his death from heart failure in 2013. 2003—Moon Ballad, by Singspiel, sired winners over jumps and the flat, beginning his stud career in Japan but later moving back to Ireland, where he was foaled. 2004—Pleasantly Perfect, a huge son of Pleasant Colony, had sired 16 stakes winners in America, including Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Shared Account, when he was sold to Turkey in 2014. 2005—Roses in May, raced by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, was sold to Shigeyuki Okada’s Big Bred Farm for stud duty and has spent his entire breeding career there. He has ranked among Japan’s top 40 sires for the past several seasons and has sired group stakes winners Cosmo Ozora, Dream Valentino, Summit Stone and MeinerBaika. 2006—Godolphin’s Electrocutionist, by Red Ransom, died of an apparent heart attack less than six months after winning the Dubai World Cup. 2007—Sheikh Hamdan’s Invasor, an Argentine-bred son of Candy Stripes who also won the Uruguayan Triple Crown and the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic while earning the American Horse of the Year title, stood several seasons at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky before being sent to Haras Quatro Piedras in Uruguay. He has sired four stakes winners to date. 2009—Bill and Susan Casner’s Well Armed, a gelding

Victoire Pisa, a hero for Japan after winning the World Cup just after Japan was assaulted by the Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami in 2011, is well supported at the Shadai Stallion Station and has 102 foals in his first crop born in 2013, 104 in his second crop and 84 in his third crop. His first crop includes fillies out of Grade/Group 1 winners Seazun, Sahpresa and Ave, and colts out of Grade 1 winner Evita Argentina and May Kiersey, a three-quarter sister to Epsom Derby winner Pour Moi. By Neo Universe and a half brother to Singspiel’s Group 1 winner AsakusaDen’en,Victoire Pisa is out of the Machiavellian mare Whitewater Affair, a Group 2 winner in France who placed in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks and Irish St. Leger. His fee is listed as private. Monterosso stands at Darley Japan’s base in Hokkaido and has 58 foals in his first crop born in 2015, according to the Japan Stud Book; his advertised fee is¥ 1.5 million. Animal Kingdom is popular in both Australia, where he is based at Arrowfield Stud, and at his shuttle station at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, where last year he covered 137 mares at a fee of $35,000.

Monty Roberts The South African equestrian community looks forward with great anticipation to the arrival of Monty Roberts, who will be demonstrating in both Johannesburg on 28th and 29th May and Cape Town on 4th and 5th June.
T
he “man who listens to horses” has visited our shores before, but this will be the first time that his demonstrations are on offer. A fascinating man, Monty can add “world renowned trainer,” “stunt double for Elizabeth Taylor in the film National Velvet,” “3 books on the New York Times bestseller list” and “foster dad to 47 children” to his list of accolades. Over the years he has done a great deal of work with Thoroughbreds, establishing a training facility, Flag Is Up Farms, on 154 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1966 and later becoming the leading consigner of two-year-olds-in training at the Hollywood Park Racetrack for 18 years.
He began touring the world at the request of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth twenty five years ago,who had appointed him to teach her staff his techniques. So it is high time South Africa has access to his Join-Up®concepts. Now in his 81st year, his quest has been to make the world a better place for horses and people alike, through teaching of his natural horsemanship techniques and spreading his message of non violence. He first learned to listen to horses while observing feral horses in Nevada, where he recognized their silent language of gestures, quantified to a

gestural language similar to sign language for the deaf, which he terms Equus. He realized that this observation could change training fundamentally, enabling it to be conducted in a more effective and humane manner, and encouraging a true partnership where the horse recognizes the gestures and is trusting enough to approach- hence his term Join-Up. He believes establishing this relationship from the ground up in the absence of violence can make a difference between a silver and gold medal, as he witnessed at the Olympics recently. When imparting his knowledge to attendees at his demonstrations, the steps to Join-Up are fairly simple but do require practice. There are various other ways to access his teachings. A textbook entitled “From My Hands to Yours” provides instruction with text and illustrations. There is also a Join-Up DVD available as well as Equus Online University 112 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
which incorporates video lessons. In South Africa Siobhan Records teaches the Join-Up philosophy to the underprivileged children of Diepsloot. There are two programmes available, namely Horse Sense and Healing which is for post traumatic stress sufferers, and Lead-Up aimed at youth leadership in violent communities. Monty has had some experience with South African horses, in particular thoroughbreds, where he started young thoroughbreds at Maine Chance Farms for the Andreas Jacobs family, he also met and helped a challenged horse by the name of Lomitas and later produced Silvano. Monty is keen to find his first local certified instructor to support and impart his teachings. Through his teachings he surrounds his students with everything they require, apart from the horse, ensuring that his goal of “to leave the world a better place than I found it, for horses and for people, too.” prevails.

COOLMORE AMERICA ASHFORD STUD

riving through the massive stone pillars that flank the black wrought iron gates at every entrance to Ashford Stud, Coolmore’s American arm of the worlds’ largest Thoroughbred breeding operation, one is immediately struck by the park-like setting, lush with sweeping trees and carefully manicured beds of shrubs nestled up against the sturdy stone walls that divide the various divisions. When the late Dr. William Lockridge selected the former cattle farm in 1979, he surely had a vision of greatness for the rolling acreage just west of Versailles, on the stretch of road that leads to Frankfort, Kentucky’s capitol seat. Formerly known as Hereford Farm, and owned by Col. Edmund Taylor who established the nearby Old Taylor Distilleries in Frankfort, the farm consisted of 465 acres. In the three years that followed, careful construction of the iconic stone barns that would someday house some of the industry’s greatest stallions could only have been a dream. For the breeding season of 1982, Storm Bird, a notable high rated, unbeaten two year old by Northern Dancer, whose brilliant but
By Lindsay Hunter troubled race career ended prematurely due to his high strung temperament and an attack of human malice, was in residence at Ashford Stud, where he remained for his entire breeding career. The coupling with the Secretariat mare, Terlingua, produced the high class juvenile, Storm Cat, who has established his own distinct branch of the Northern Dancer sire line, with 811 winners (177 Stakes winners) from 1452 foals, ending his career at stud as the most valuable and expensive sire in Kentucky, with his influence being felt for many years to come. In the mid-eighties, Ashford became part of the Coolmore holdings. Soon joined in the stud by Woodman (Mr. Prospector x Playmate by Buckpasser) and El Gran Senor (Northern Dancer x Sex Appeal by Buckpasser) establishing Coolmore’s reputation on an international level. 1996 marked the retirement of Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch, who gained the distinction of the first champion sire to stand at Ashford when he topped the General Sire List in 2001, soon the Stallion Roster expanded to include Hennessy and INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Giant’s Causeway, who has so far achieved three Champion Sire titles and is one of the most sought after sires in the world. Coolmore, the worlds’ largest breeding operation, is owned by the Magnier family, who have stood a long line of champion stallions since the 1850’s, beginning as a relatively small operation in County Cork, Ireland. Originally a small farm dedicated to agriculture, it was inherited by Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain. After the war, he left the Air Force and joined Goff’s Bloodstock Auctioneers, while also setting up his own bloodstock agency. In 1968 he began transforming the farm, and partnered with trainer Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster, flamboyant businessman turned racehorse breeder. O’Brien later sold his interest to his son in law, John Magnier. Coolmore Ireland, the Coolmore National Hunt (Castle Hyde Stud) and Coolmore Australia in the Hunter Valley where there are 600 broodmares and 13 quality stallions, along with Coolmore America, make up the Coolmore holdings. Sadlers Wells (Northern Dancer), Danehill (Danzig) and Galileo (Sadlers Wells) are international stallions with unsurpassed influence on the most prestigious of bloodstock. After American Pharoah won the prestigious Blue Grass Stakes for three year olds at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, Dermot Ryan, Manager at Ashford Stud, expressed the opinion that he was a ‘serious’ horse, a contender for the Kentucky Derby honors. It was announce in May that Coolmore was able to purchase the breeding rights for a reported $13.8 million, from breeder, 118 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

An online contest to name him was hosted by the Zayats, and an error in the registration process led to the now famous misspelling of his name. His training was entrusted to Bob Baffert, and he ran fifth in his first start at Del Mar, followed by back to back wins in the Del Mar Futurity and the Front Runner Stakes, earning him an Eclipse Award for Two Year Old Male. Winning his first two starts of his three year old campaign, he started as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby, which he won handily. He followed that with a seven length victory in the Preakness Stakes, and stormed through the stretch to take the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, becoming the twelfth Triple Crown winner after a dry spell of 37 years and America’s Favorite. Following his Triple Crown, he won the Haskell in fine style, and culminated his career with a six and a half length victory in the Breeders Cup Classic. The first horse to ever win the Triple Crown and the Breeders Cup Classic, Thoroughbred racing’s Grand Slam, moved shortly after the Breeders Cup to his new residence at Ashford Stud, he was made available to an endless stream of visitors who he received kindly and patiently several times daily.
