The stallions we manage are consistently at the forefront – the late-great champion Captain Al had 8 consecutive 2yo Sire Championships, Dynasty was crowned Equus Outstanding Sire for the fourth time in 2017 and Trippi was Champion Sire in 2016. Gimmethegreenlight was 2016’s Champion Freshman Sire, boasting Gr1 and Gr2 winners from his first two crops to race. What A Winter was 2017’s Champion Freshman Sire, followed closely by Twice Over who has already sired two Gr1 winners from his first crop (including Vodacom Durban July winner Do It Again). Querari’s progeny see him leading an assault on the sire championship. Pathfork has a Gr1 winner and Philanthropist maintains his status as an international sire with a massive win in HK. Jackson and Master Of My Fate’s first runners have already set the stage for much more to come. Wylie Hall’s first runners will hit the track in the 2018/19 season and Horse Of The Year Futura’s exciting first yearlings go on sale in 2019. Thank you for your much valued support.

THE FIRE BURNS… In just a matter of months it will be two years since the time honoured tradition and proud history of the Beck family’s powerful Highlands Stud passed to the custodianship of Ridgemont’s Kieswetter family.

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
I
n a business transaction rare in its nature and some years in the nurturing, the news broke in January 2017 that the Beck family and Graham Beck Enterprises had agreed to sell its Western Cape Thoroughbred operation, Highlands Stud, to the Kieswetter family of Ridgemont Stud.
The warm handshake and transfer of ownership included the magnificent 100-hectare Robertson Valley property housing the world-renowned Highlands Stud, as well as the stallions and bloodstock. The pledge of a continuation of the Beck legacy was, in reality, a momentous commitment by the new owners of Highlands. Especially given the extraordinary achievements of a family synonymous with producing champions and associated with success at the very highest level of the sport of horseracing in South Africa for close on half a century. The Beck’s achievements were interwoven with a deep love and burning passion for the thoroughbred and the broader local racing and breeding industry. Through the glorious summers and long Cape winters, the Highlands flag fluttered proudly at the pinnacle of their success. These were always going to be giant boots to fill and it was a transition of outstanding performance and reputational value that had to be managed, embraced and protected - like a rare family heirloom. As the sun sets on 2018, the future looks bright and exciting with the Ridgemont Highlands team implementing a further transitory change in branding and looking forward to the challenges of 2019. From the early ‘Highlands Stud, a part of Ridgemont’, to the newly defined crisp lines of the Ridgemont Highlands distinctive branding in blue and red, the winning team is poised to raise the bar and strive to set new standards of excellence in 2019. The foundation of the Ridgemont Highlands powerhouse was laid decades ago in the famous stallion barn - where the new age ‘Super Six’ rule the valley today. Headed by the superstar multiple Equus Outstanding Sire and producer of more SA Horses OfTheYear this century than any other sire, Dynasty, and his handsome multiple Gr1 winning son Jackson, the Ridgemont Highlands
stallion band was given a powerful injection of further diversity and class this season by the introduction of the five-time Gr1 winner Canford Cliffs, who proudly boasted runners in some of the world’s greatest races in recent months. Also joining the illustrious line-up was local Redoute’s Choice champion sprinter Rafeef – the exciting stallion prospect, aptly labelled ‘The Thunder From Down Under’. The beautifully bred Singspiel Gr1 winner Potala Palace and the outstanding Pathfork complete the sextet that makes up what is undoubtedly the most respected stallion band on African soil. The equine division apart, multiple SA Champion Jockey Anton Marcus, who broke new records and rode his 100th Gr1 winner last season, joined longstanding East Cape Champion rider and Met and July winner Greg Cheyne on the Ridgemont Highlands saddle staff in August. The move to always have the best men in the stirrups of their equine stars reinforces the Ridgemont Highlands striving for excellence. A decision was also made to run the Ridgemont Highlands colts and fillies in distinguishing sets of silks this season. The girls strut their stuff in the dark green, blue sleeves and white cap, while the boys carry the dark blue, white crossed sashes and dark blue sleeves and cap. Ridgemont Highlands’ Craig Kieswetter said that producing champions was a marathon pursuit of dedication, passion and professionalism, the seeds of which were sowed in the breeding paddocks and ultimately came to fruition on the Gr1 winner’s podium – whereafter the cycle is repeated and refined with the wisdom engendered by the passing years of trying – and never surrendering. “Breeding racehorses really is one of the most rewarding and demanding team sports on earth. At Ridgemont Highlands, we have the horses. We also have the people. And we are extremely fortunate to have joined hands with a respected industry leader and established producer of champions. It was Highlands and Ridgemont yesterday. And Ridgemont Highlands today – and into the future!”

MOËT & CHANDON OPEN THE SOUTH AFRICAN FESTIVE SEASON IN STYLE! We chatted to Patrick Leslie, Moët Hennessy Champagne Portfolio Manager, about the magnificent Moët & Chandon Golden Tree and all things champagne…
Q: This year the Silo District at the V&A was home to the spectacular Moët & Chandon Golden Tree. Tell us about the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree Lighting Ceremony, it sounded magnificent! A: We are delighted to have brought the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree to the Silo District again this year. The Lighting Ceremony was a fitting celebration for our incredible festive installation, with performances by the acclaimed South African Youth Choir and the Cape Town City Ballet. Once the sun had set, visitors were treated to an impressive lighting display, with the 230 meters of LED lights individually programmed to illuminate in sync with festive music. Q: What sets the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree apart from other beautiful Christmas Tree installations worldwide? A: There are spectacular Christmas Trees to be seen all around the world, like the porcelain tree in Belgium and the impressive floating tree in Brazil, but we believe none are as awe-inspiring as Cape Town’s grand Moët & Chandon Golden Tree, which we created entirely from recycled champagne bottles. The Golden Tree is an impressive four-storeys high and was built with over 1800 champagne bottles collected from all over South Africa. The Moët & Chandon Golden Tree is wrapped in a shimmering gold ribbon created using over 2000 discs, so it’s impressive day and night. Q: The Moët & Chandon Golden Tree is sure to be a festive favourite for visitors to the V&A. Will it become an annual event? A: Epitomising warmth, generosity and grandeur, there is no doubt the Moët & Chandon Golden Tree has become synonymous with the opening of the festive season in South Africa. Moët & Chandon is known as the champagne of celebration globally, so what better way to share festive joy with everyone visiting the V&A Waterfront over the season. Capetonians and their visitors can visit the tree until the 6th of January 2019. Q: Before we finish, we need to settle the debate over which I am sure many a friendship has been tarnished… the pronunciation of our favourite champagne. Please clarify this for everybody; Mo-wett or Mo-way? A: This is something I get asked all the time! The correct pronunciation of Moët is an age-old question that has sparked debate across dinner tables amongst friends, champagne aficionados across the globe and even garners attention on prime-time radio shows and trends in the ‘Twittersphere’! So it’s definitely time we set the record straight once and for all ... the correct pronunciation is ‘Mo-Wett’, not ‘Mo-Way’! So if anyone should ask you as you offer them a glass of “MoWett”, you can now happily inform them that you are indeed pronouncing your favourite champagne correctly! Indeed, the winery’s founder Claude Moët was of Dutch heritage, which is why it’s pronounced ‘Mo-Wett’, not ‘Mo-Way’. So now you know! Q: Moët & Chandon is referred to as the world’s most loved champagne, do you think this is because of the Maison’s association with celebration? A: I do, yes. We believe that after 270 years of celebrating life’s memorable moments, there is no better way to honour one’s achievements and successes, than with a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne. With a bottle of our champagne opened every second around the globe, Moët & Chandon knows that every second is an experience, and every experience is a Moët Moment to live and celebrate! Q: And of course, what better season to celebrate! A: Precisely! Moët & Chandon opened what is sure to be a memorable festive season, magnificently!

One World & Chimichuri Run in the Concord Cup
ight years since its inception, the unique concept of stabling and selling yearlings from the iconic Cape Town International Convention Centre has been honed to a fine art. Breeders have stepped up to the challenge of producing yearlings for an early January sale and from walkways, to lighting, the CTICC will be ready to host an influx of local and international buyers. The 2018 Cape Premier Yearling Sale finished with a solid aggregate of R111 475 000. Four lots reached R3 million with bloodstock agent John Freeman going to R4 million to secure Lot 94, a Frankel (GB) colt out of Pale Moon Rising (IRE). The Sale also attracted new international buyers, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club signing for four outstanding individuals. The Cape Thoroughbred Sales company has a history of graduates excelling at the highest order and the 2017/2018 season was no different with a total of 12 Gr 1 winning graduates. The 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale alone has
already delivered exceptional results with Van Halen, an Oratorio colt out of Rock Concert, trained by Tobie Spies, winning the Gr 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville. While One World, a Captain Al colt out of Aquilonia (GB) trained by Vaughan Marshall, recently won the Gr 2 Concord Cup over 1600m to remain unbeaten as he heads to the Gr 1 Cape Guineas as favourite. Graduates have excelled on the international scene as well, with Singapore Sling winning the HKGr 1 Hong Kong Classic Cup, while Janoobi won the Gr 2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan. Hence the catalogue for the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale has been eagerly awaited and it certainly packs the punch that everyone has come to expect from the sale. Of the 226 lots catalogued, 54 lots are out of stakes winning mares, including 12 lots out of Grade 1 winners. There are also 43 siblings to stakes winners catalogued, including 14 siblings to Grade 1 winners. On the sire front there are a total of 38 sires represented, including an interesting international representation with four yearlings by Camelot (GB) and two by Frankel (GB), Uncle Mo (USA) and Zoffany (IRE) respectively. The top five South

African sires are well represented with nine yearlings by the late Captain Al, 11 by Dynasty, eight by Silvano (GER), six by Trippi (USA) and 10 by speed sire Var (USA). There is also a good selection of yearlings from first season sires such as Coup de Grace (USA), Futura, Global View (USA), Legislate and Louis The King. Champion sire Captain Al’s last crop will be going under the hammer in 2019 and there are true standouts catalogued. Lot 43 is a colt out of the Sadler’s Wells (USA) mare Ebaraya (IRE). Ebaraya is a half sister to Estimate, Champion Stayer in Europe and Great Britain and an unnamed full sister to Lot 43 was knocked down to MV Magnier for R1.9 million at the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Lot 129 out of Pagan Princess, is a full sister to Gr 1 winner Real Princess and Gr 1 Cape Guineas winner and sire, William Longsword. Secret Of Victoria is firmly following in the footsteps of her illustrious dam Mystic Spring (IRE), having already produced Grade 1 winners All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out. A full brother to the two Grade 1 winners is catalogued as Lot 169. Another to look out for is Lot 139, a half sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner Princess Victoria.

An exciting offering must be Lot 91, a colt named Falcon, who is the first foal of Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Lanner Falcon. Also worth having a second look at are Lot 13, a colt out of Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic winner Bambina Stripes (ARG) consigned by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, Lot 22, a colt out of Grade 1 placed Careful Hiker, from the family of Grade 1 winners Silver Mountain and Cloth Of Cloud and Lot 85, a

While the second Frankel, also consigned by Klawervlei Stud as agent, is out of the Dark Angel (IRE) mare Lost In Love (IRE). Of interest to the international buying bench will be Lot 105, a Silvano half brother to star stayer Torcedor (IRE), from the family of Yeats (IRE) and Solskjaer (IRE). From Drakenstein Stud comes Lot 202, a half brother to Gr 2 SA Nursery winner William The Silent from the family of Gr 1 Champions Cup runner up, Silvano’s Jet. Trippi (USA), another of the top five sires in South Africa has six yearlings on offer. Trippi (USA) can produce some very speedy babies and hence Lot 57, the first foal of Gr 1 Mercury Sprint winner Fly By Night, is sure to be on many a short list. Also of interest will be Lot 184, a full brother to Gr 3 winner and Gr 1 placed Chimichuri Run, out of the Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic winner, Spiced Gold. Philanthropist (USA), who stands with Trippi (USA) at Drakenstein Stud, has four yearlings on offer with the highlight likely to be Lot 214, a full sister to Gr 3 winner and Gr 1 placed, She’s A Giver, consigned by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm.

Do It Again - Vodacom Durban July

CLASH OF THE TITANS IN THE GREEN POINT STAKES The R400,000 WFA Gr2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes is neither a Grade 1 nor does its prize money sport the many zeros of races such as the Gr 1 Sun Met and the Gr 1 Vodacom Durban July, yet this year’s renewal looks likely to be the clash of the season. Only six runners will enter the starting stalls come Saturday the 8th of December, but the list of entries reads like the whose who of racing. Over the years the Green Point Stakes ,run over 1600m on the summer course at Kenilworth Racecourse, has become the favoured leadup race for a campaign aimed at the Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queens Plate over 1600m on the 5th of January and the Grade 1 Sun Met over 2000m on the 26th of January.

his year is no different, except this year’s race promised to be a mighty tussle between the reigning dual Horse Of The Year, the extraordinary Legal Eagle and the young unbeaten upstart Rainbow Bridge. Legal Eagle, trained by Sean Tarry, was aiming for a hattrick in the Green Point Stakes, having beaten Marinaresco, who subsequently won the Vodacom Durban July the following year, in 2016 and Edict Of Nantes, who finished third behind Marinaresco in the Voadom Durban July, in 2017, both by roughly half a length. In a career spanning four years so far, Legal Eagle won eight Grade 1 races, two Grade 2’s, a Grade 3 and a Listed race. The Greys Inn (USA) gelding also finished runner up twice in the Gr 1 Sun Met and in the Gr 1 Premier’s Champions Challenge. And to top it all, Legal Eagle has never been beaten over a mile, the distance the Green Point Stakes is run over. No wonder few had dared to take him on. Rainbow Bridge on the other hand, is fairy new to the racing game. An injury at the start of his three-year-old career put paid 24

to him running in the Classics and the Ideal World (USA) gelding only stepped out on the turf for the first time towards the end of his three-year-old season. After winning his maiden with the greatest of ease by 2.25 lengths, trainer Eric Sands launched Rainbow Bridge straight into Graded race company with a start in the Gr 3 Highlands Stud Winter Guineas over a mile. The gelding strolled home under a hands and heels ride, this time by 1.25 lengths. Two more Grade 3 victories followed in the Highlands Stud Winter Classic over 1800m at Kenilworth and the World Sports Betting Matchem Stakes over 1400m at the Durbanville track. In his final start Rainbow Bridge contested the Cape Mile, again winning with ease by 1.75 lengths to remain unbeaten. Like Legal Eagle, Rainbow Bridge has also never been beaten over a mile, but he has yet to step out in the big league of Grade 2 and Gr 1 races, something Legal Eagle has routinely done for the past four years. Not counting in his favour either is the gelding’s tendency to get a bit hot under the collar and make life difficult for himself. His victory in the Winter Classic came despite him pulling hard and fighting his jockey the entire 1800m of the race. As Richard Fourie, the jockey onboard that day commented, “there is no way he should have won that”.

Undercover Agent Pinnacle Stakes
Rainbow Bridge is unbeaten and he is very much an unknown factor. Yes, he hasn’t raced in Grade 1 company yet as he will have to do come Saturday, but he can only beat what he is presented with and that he has done comprehensively so far. If he lowers the colours of Legal Eagle, the sky is surely the limit. Yet Legal Eagle will not be his only competition, for also lining up will be the reigning Vodacom Durban July winner, Do It Again, trained by Champion trainer Justin Snaith. Do It Again has proven his versatility with victories in the Gr 2 Daisy Guineas over 1600m and the Vodacom Durban July over 2200m, both at Greyville. At Kenilworth Racecourse he has won over a mile, but also ran second in the Gr 1 Investec Cape Derby (2000m). Do It Again’s main aim is surely the Gr 1 Sun Met, with Snaith following the tried and tested route of using the Green Point Stakes as a stepping stone to the L’Ormarins Queens Plate and the Sun Met. The Twice Over (GB) gelding has however not had a run since his Vodacom Durban July victory, while Rainbow Bridge is racing fit and Legal Eagle has had a season’s opener in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m on the 15th of November at Turffontein, which he won with his customary half a length. Since arriving in Cape Town, Legal Eagle has also had a strong grass gallop on the Kenilworth summer course under race jockey Anton Marcus, who flew down specially for the occasion. 26
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
The Brett Crawford trained Undercover Agent, a son of the late Captain Al, can also not be discounted. The four-year old colt has only been unplaced three times in eleven starts, winning six of those and finishing second twice. And one of those victories came in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Challenge over 1600m at Greyville. Like Legal Eagle, he also won his season’s opener, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1200m at Kenilworth on the 27th of October, lowering the colours a very useful bunch of sprinters in the process. And like Rainbow Bridge, Undercover Agent also has never crossed paths with Legal Eagle either. A clash of titans was predicted, but what transpired can only be described as the most extraordinary race ever witnessed at Kenilworth in recent years. Do It Again, Undercover Agent and Legal Eagle dueling in the final stages in a heads up, heads down contest, with Rainbow Bridge flying up late to join the party. Never before had four such talented horses raced neck and neck in a perfect line for the winning post. In the end though, one nose touched the line first and that nose belong to the champion, the seven-year-old Legal Eagle, perfectly ridden by Anton Marcus. A photo finish was needed to separate the other three, with the final finishing order being Undercover Agent in second by a nose from Do It Again, who beat Rainbow Bridge into fourth by a nose. What a race, what an outcome, what superstars!

f the quality of the current crop of South African exports is anything to go by, 2019 promises to be an exciting year on the international racing circuit. Amongst those set to take on the world are a champion stayer, a champion juvenile, a Met runner-up and a number of high-class Gr.1 winners.
For the most part, Dubai has provided South African-breds with an ideal international platform and its Carnival in particular, is an excellent measure of the worth of our bloodstock. Those to have risen to the challenge include the likes of Ipi Tombe, Victory Moon, Jay Peg, Shea Shea, Vercingetorix and J J The Jet Plane, all of whom proved their mettle at the highest level. Dubai’s perennial champion international trainer, Mike de Kock has suffered a lean spell these last few years, thus a number of high-class imports could just provide his Blue Stables with a much-needed tonic in 2019. Due to arrive in the second week of January will be the first two home in last season’s Gr.1 Daily News 2000 Surcharge (Gimmethegreenlight) (now renamed

Blue Stables will also be home to Dean Kannemeyer’s lightlyraced, but infinitely talented Last Winter, a R3.7-million yearling purchase by Western Winter. Undefeated in the first four of just six starts, he came within a shorthead of claiming the Gr.2 Premier Trophy and was a storming second in the Gr.1 Sun Met won by subsequent Horse of the Year Oh Susanna. Although trainer Weiho Marwing has handed over the reins of his champion stayer Hermoso Mundo to De Kock, he will be on hand for consultation and will remain very much involved. Winner of the 2017 Gold Cup, the Ideal World gelding flew from near last to run second in this year’s marathon event. His chief target is reportedly the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup at the World Cup meeting on March 30, the prize money for which has been raised to $1.5-million. “As they will only arrive in January, we won’t be rushing them,” De Kock reported on his website. “We’ll be looking to step

them out on Super Saturday in March, at best. There will be other later options like the races in Hong Kong. Speaking of which, the rich Hong Kong circuit has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for our exports. After all, it was at Sha Tin that the mighty London News led the way and galloped to international fame when claiming the prestigious Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Cup. Since that pioneer victory, notables such as Irridescence, J J The Jet Plane, Variety Club, Scented Samantha and Cerise Cherry have successfully flown the South African flag in the former Colony. Current standout amongst the resident South African-breds is Singapore Sling. Trained by South African-born Tony Millard, the Drakenstein-bred has established himself as one of the top gallopers and his duels with current Hong Kong star Beauty Generation have enthralled South Africans (and dare we say Hong Kong patrons). He will be targeting the prestigious Longines International meeting at Sha Tin on the second Sunday in December, as will stable companion Edict Of Nantes.
The latter was voted the Equus champion three-year-old of 2016-17 following a sophomore season which brought victories in the Cape Derby and Daily News 2000, as well as a swan song third in the Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July. Renamed Northern Superstar, the son of Count Dubois suffered a slight setback which delayed his Hong Kong debut until just two weeks before his intended start in the 2000m Cup. Taking on a quality-packed field over a mile, he finished a pleasing sixth. Another South African-bred likely to be in action at the International meeting is former Millard inmate and Vase entrant Horse Of Fortune. Now trained by C H Yip, this half-brother to last season’s champion three-year-old and Vodacom Durban July hero Do It Again, won six races for the Millard stable, prime amongst which the Gr.3 Ladies Purse. Southern Superstar, or Craven, as he was known in South Africa, is highly rated by Millard and made a hugely promising start to his Hong Kong career when a close up third over the Sha Tin mile in late October. Heading the new additions to his arsenal is Trippi four-year-old Lobo’s Legend, who earned his Gr.1 spurs when claiming last season’s SA Classic.

MILTON
Text & Photos by Liesl King
G I A N T S L AY E R The title of Champion is bestowed by the horseracing world upon those who rise above all others in their quest to conquer and win. Horses that have won the most famous races of all, such as the Epsom Derby or the Arc. Horses that retire unbeaten such as Frankel and Black Caviar and horses that have won multiple Group 1 races during their career. All champions. Their names are engraved on trophies at glittering receptions and their feats live on in the memory of those fortunate enough to witness them scaling those heady heights. Yet there is another kind of champion. Horses whose names will never grace a trophy, who do not have a single Group 1 behind their name, horses who have never won the Derby or the Arc and yet their feats are also worthy of the title of champion. Horses who run on heart and heart alone. Horses for whom the winning post is everything. Milton is one such horse.

Corne Orffer and Milton
O
n the 2nd of October 2011 a chestnut colt was born at Maine Chance Farms. By Lateral (GB) out of the Unaccounted For (USA) mare Missing No More (USA), he was not outstanding by any accounts, just another correct baby that would one day grow up to be a racehorse. In March of 2013 he was entered as Lot 278 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 2, where he was knocked down to trainer Bill Prestage for R160,000. Missing No More was a four-time winner with her best effort being a 4th place in the Gr. 2 Majorca Stakes. As a broodmare she had produced six foals already, with five racing and three winning. Milton was her seventh foal and her only colt. A moderate price for a moderate pedigree, or so one would have thought. Prestage however saw something in the chestnut colt. At 84, Bill Prestage has been in the game longer than most and has seen it all. A quiet man, who prefers to listen rather than to speak, he is one of a few trainers who only train

for their own account and hence Milton stepped out in the colours of Mr. & Mrs. W G Prestage. “We looked at him at the sale and liked him. Lateral was a new sire and hence most people gave him a miss. But we liked him.The female line was fairly good and there were lots of nice things about him, so we bought him”, Prestage explains. Milton repaid that trust with a solid second behind Light The Lights in his first start, followed by a third and a fourth placing, before winning his fourth start by 1.75 lengths with MJ Byleveld in the saddle. In a career spanning three years Milton has had 27 starts for 5 wins and 13 places. The greatest of those victories coming in December 2017 in the Gr 2 Premier Trophy over 1800m with Gavin Lerena, the eighth jockey to swing a leg over, in the saddle. Not only did Milton win, but in doing so he beat none other than Last Winter, thus ending the colt’s unbeaten record. Last Winter would go on to run second in the Gr 1 Sun Met a month and a half later, before being exported for an overseas campaign. Yet it wasn’t so much that Milton beat Last Winter, it was about the way that he did it.You see Milton likes to lead. He is always smartly away and off to find that winning post. And if allowed to skip clear, he is very capable of putting many, many lengths

on the chasing pack. And in the Premier Trophy that is precisely what happened. Milton skipped clear with only Opera Royal trying to keep the flying chestnut in his sights. With 300m to go, Opera Royal had had enough and gave up the chase. The chasing pack was closing, but not making much of an impact, until Last Winter took off from the back of the field. With an incredible turn of foot, the big burly colt was catching Milton with every stride. But Milton had a secret weapon, he just doesn’t know how to lose. Fighting stride for stride the determined chestnut kept his head in front, refusing to give in until that line was crossed. And when the line came Milton’s nose was in front, the official margin being 0,05 lengths. “I always thought he would be a decent sort of horse. He is probably just a little off the very top class, but he is right up there. The best thing about him is that he’s a very genuine horse”, Prestage explained. That victory in the Premier Trophy was precisely that, a gutsy win, by a genuine horse, giving it his all and slaying giants in his wake. Was that to be Milton’s one brief moment of glory? Nope, for this little gelding was far from done. For 11 months later, on the 24th of November 2018, Milton would line up in a Pinnacle Stakes over 2000m at Kenilworth with Corne Orffer, the 14th jockey to pick up the reins, in the saddle.
44
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
Orffer had clearly done his homework, for as the gates pinged open, he bounced the gelding out smartly and set off at a blistering pace, scorching his way around the track. And once again the chasing pack sat back thinking that over 2000m, Milton would surely tire and come back to them. Milton however, had other ideas. Rounding the final bend the gap was a staggering 10 lengths and the gelding showed no signs of stopping. Behind him were stars such as Made To Conquer and Elusive Silva, second and third in the 2018 Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July, but that made not the slightest bit of difference to Milton. The gelding had the winning post in sight and that was all that mattered. Yes, the chasing pack got closer, but the flying chestnut, the gelding that was close to top class but not quite there, came home lonely, winning comfortably by 4.25 lengths. Milton may not have a string of Group 1 victories behind his name. He may not have won the Arc or the Epsom Derby or be an undefeated star, but he is a champion in his own right. A horse that doesn’t know how to throw in the towel, a horse that runs with his heart. And on a day filled with great victories by young stars in a bunch of Group races, the greatest of them all, cheered home by his many fans, was the victory of the flying chestnut, the slayer of giants, Milton.

NOTHEMBA MLONZI TWO WINNERS IN FIRST SEASON FOR KZN BREEDER
There was plenty to celebrate at the KZN Breeder’s Awards held at Fordoun in Nottingham Road on Saturday night but the most heartwarming story was of a new breeder, Nothemba Mlonzi, whose first two runners she has bred both won in their first racing season.

N
othemba owns a farm in the Midlands where she had been growing tomatoes. A Cedara graduate was managing this operation and thoroughbred breeding doyen Anton Procter, who lives nearby, was also regularly helping out. The manager one day recommended she should do something with the section of empty land she had, where the kikuya grass would provide good grazing. He informed her of Procter’s success in breeding racehorses in the area and advised her to chat to him.
Master Keys gave Nathan Kotzen his first winner as a trainer when scoring on debut and Galaxy Tunes also won on debut for Mark Dixon. Master Keys had her second start at Scottsville yesterday and finished unplaced. Procter has advised Nothemba throughout and she could not have asked for a more experienced and passionate mentor.
Procter played cricket for Natal together with his legendary brother Mike. However, he was always destined to be a farmer and horseman. He began following pedigrees in his school days as he was keen to find out why different horses by the same sire kept on winning. Later he became involved in amateur horseracing Procter recommended she should first travel to watch the Epsom as an owner and trainer in Donnybrook. He travelled all the way Derby, where the winner represents the pinnacle of breeding down to Umtata to win his first race, the horse being ridden by achievement, and this would give her a good idea of what the a young African who had never ridden in a race before. It felt like game was all about. He had soon organised her a Derby ticket winning the July to Procter and his passion grew. His later career with the help of Larry Nestadt. in thoroughbreds included being secretary of the Richmond Gymkhana Club; he had a public trainer’s license in Zimbabwe; Nothemba, who works in Johannesburg for the company she and he spent nine years working for perennial KZN champion herself founded, Econ Oil, had a wonderful time at the Derby, breeders Summerhill Stud. On Durban July day in 1970 Toreador and a half-sister to Grade 1-placed Patchit Up Baby). just about the whole town descended on his premises thinking it The resulting progeny were the filly Master Keys and the colt was a Tote and he stood to lose a fortune on the favourite Naval Galaxy Tunes. The pair were sold at the National Yearling Sales Escort. Fortunately the latter ran unplaced and an outsider his and the KZN Yearling Sale for R100,000 and R50,000 respectively wife had dreamed vividly about winning the race, Court Day, duly won. evening and asked his children to count the contents of his satchel. It came to a princely R34,000, which was three times more than it had cost him to buy the property and build the house where they were staying. Procter’s influence is still felt in SA breeding as he was instrumental in bringing Rakeen over to South Africa. This son of the great Northern Dancer went on to sire the phenomenal champion racehorse and seven-times South African National Champion Sire, Jet Master. It was Nestadt who had given Procter an instruction to find a horse good enough to win a stakes race in South Africa and have a pedigree good enough to stand at stud. The buying team’s first option was on Mark Of Distinction, but the deal fell through. Then, Procter, with the help of pedigree fundi Robin Bruss, identified all of the Northern Dancers left in the world and they found Rakeen, a four-year-old trained by John Gosden who had not yet raced but who had a superb pedigree. They approached Sheik Mohammed’s manager Anthony Stroud and he agreed to sell for £100,000. However, a few days later Rakeen won comfortably on debut over nine furlongs and the deal was off.Three days later he ran over a mile and was beaten as odds on favourite. Stroud did an about turn and said he would sell for £125,000 and the deal was done. Procter went to watch Rakeen’s next race a few days later at Doncaster with Henry 48

Cecil’s assistant and a Sheik Mohammed representative. Under Walter Swinburn he won the ten furlong event by five lengths. Rakeen won four races in South Africa and finished third in the July of 1991, the same year the celebrated import Al Mufti ran second. Procter was working for Aldora Stud in the KZN Midlands when Rakeen stood there. He recalled the late Hugh Jonsson wanting to send his mare Jet Lightning to him but stalling as he was convinced R5,000 for a live foal was too much. Procter, in a session of bartering which lasted about two hours one morning, eventually convinced Jonsson the fee was worth it for such a well bred stallion and the resulting progeny was Jet Master. Procter, with the help of veterinarian John McVeigh, also identified the successful stallion Toreador on a visit to Coolmore and he was also instrumental in bringing over Crusade, who was announced as the KZN Stallion of the Year at Saturday night’s awards. Nothemba currently owns six mares and has also bought a share in the exciting new Maine Chance Farms-based Dubawi stallion, Erupt. Her enthusiasm will surely rub off on others so her importance to an industry which needs new participants can not be underestimated.

PHILIP FOURIE
THE LOADMASTER
T
here is unlikely to be a soul involved in horseracing in South Africa who hasn’t crossed paths with Philip Fourie somewhere during their life. Be it as jockey, float driver, stud manager, foaling assistant or the man who makes sure your precious racehorse gets to the track on time.Yet few know the man behind the ready smile, who signs off after each and every raceday in Gold Circle country with a little Facebook message for the good folk, whose horses he so carefully transports. The gentle drizzle could not even prevent the excitement at the beautifully turned out Scottsville Racecourse today. For now, the real stars are safe in their stables. If you had a winner or two today, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am the loadmaster. The end. Yet as a true horseman he grieves for each and every one that does not make back.
“Although I never rode as a child, the idea of becoming a jockey was planted in my brain by a neighbour, Pat Burrel, who loved horse racing and always told my parents that because of my stature, he felt I should at least give it a try. I joined the academy in June 1972 and was taught to ride from scratch, by Cyril Buckham and Orville Wright. I signed for my license to race ride in December 1972 and was shipped off to Cape Town where I was apprenticed first to the stable of Alec Soteriadis and then Scotty Schuleman. Unfortunately I could not continue due to a weight problem and I had to stop riding in 1977.” A lengthy stint in the army followed, before Fourie decided that the solitude of the road might be a welcome change. He started driving long distance floats for Blue Chip Racehorse Carriers in 1987. There he met Dennis Mills, who taught him everything he knew about the best way to care for a horse in transit. Sadly, Blue Chip closed its doors and while Fourie continued on with Ken Hall when he reopened as Horseworld, that company also wasn’t in business for very long. Undeterred Fourie found a driving position within the transport industry.
After another hot one today, athletes are delivered safely to their stables. Day ended on a low, as we sadly had to come home less one. Erin go Bragh big fellah, gallop eternal, free from pain. If you had a winner or two CONGRATULATIONS! I am the loadmaster. In Colesburg one evening, whilst having something to eat at a truck stop, a beautiful red float pulled up next to him, being driven The end. by none other than his old friend Dennis Mills. Mills informed Fourie however did not come from a horsey background but his him that he was now driving for New Turf Carriers, belonging to small stature persuaded his parents to let him have a go at being Mark and Dorrie Sham. Since he knew Mark and Dorrie from his Horseworld days, he decided to take a chance and phoned them. a jockey. He takes up the story. 54

The rest is history, although in true Fourie style there was a gap in the middle as he decided yet again that it was time for a new adventure. “I drove for the Sham family for about 4 years, meeting up with old friends and making new ones along the way. Then through the grapevine I heard that Rosedene Stud was looking for a manager, so I applied. The resident stallions were Greys Inn and Mellifont, with Greys Inn only in his second season at stud. Mellifont was an absolute gem to work with, whereas Greys Inn had the tendency to bite, so you always had to make sure that you were positioned so that you could keep an eye on him. In June 2010, whilst helping Lionel, the stallion groom, prepare the afternoon feed, Greys Inn turned on me. He grabbed me and tossed me around like a rag doll, resulting in me losing half of my thumb and the use of my index finger. After that I totally lost my nerve and felt that I had to get away”, Fourie explains. As so often happened in Fourie’s life, fate intervened as Philip Kahan of the Alchemy Stud invited him to come and stay with him at his stud farm in Paarl, where the broodmares were kept out of season, until he regained his confidence. Then with the foaling season approaching, Kahan asked whether he would go and assist Johan Loftus at the main stud farm in Robertson. There the stallion Great Britain had arrived with an injury to his near fore which required hot and cold compress every hour. Working with a stallion again, was however the very last thing Fourie wanted to do. “Johan however called me aside and told me that this was my “make or break” chance at getting my nerve back and thankfully Great Britain, being the gentleman he is, stood like a star for all his treatments.” Yet float driving was always close to his heart, and it wasn’t long before he decided to return to New Turf Carriers. This time
to drive for Mike and Matthew Sham, who had purchased the company from their parents.“They gave me a job here in Durban, where I am in charge of ensuring that the horses are taken to and from races timeously and safely. It’s a job comes with highs and lows. The highs are working with, albeit in a small way, some great horses. The heartbreaking part is leaving one behind. A really unexpected highlight for me was winning the Gold Circle Personality of the Year Award this year.” Every job comes with its characters and I quiz him on some of the more interesting horses he has had to work with in Durban. “I can name you one for starters”, he quips, “Red Chestnut Road. For every step he takes towards the float, he takes two or three backwards. Loading him is a real test of patience. I actually have a list of horses who I refer to as my “special needs” children. These range from the outright mad ones who literally lie down in the float, to the extremely nervous ones. All of these horses are loaded so that we are able to get to them immediately, should the need ever arise. We also have two horses with only one eye (the one being Gorgeous Guest who I nicknamed Wink) which we load in such a way that they do not bump their heads. Lastly, I ask about the lady in his life. “Ah The Goth”, he says with a smile. “Gothika, aka The Goth is the lady in my life, who was given to me by Stephen Blakey, as a very young puppy. I have had her for 4 years now and she goes wherever I go and eats the same food as I do, with the exception of brussels sprouts. Hence, I cook for two.” From jockey to the loadmaster, Fourie is a horseman through and through and his knowledge and love of horses is unparalleled. Life may have thrown him a couple of curve balls but he has deftly knocked them clean out of the park. So if you are in need of some help with a tricky loader, or just need a chat, drop in at New Turf in Durban. The Loadmaster, with his ready smile will be only too happy to help.

INSPIRING WORK FOR THE DISABLED
AT SARDA DURBAN The South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) Durban is based in the heart of horse country in Kwazulu-Natal, the beautiful suburb of Summerveld, headed up by Tracey Cumming with her team of Volunteers at Ridgetop Equestrian Centre and Gold Circle’s team recently paid a visit to celebrate a decade of association.

S
ARDA Durban has been based with Tracey at Ridgetop Equestrian Centre since 2007 and has been in existence for over 20 years, assisting children with a variety of physical and mental challenges.
Ridgetop Equestrian Centre gives you a wonderful feeling as you descend the driveway. The whole property has a warm and inviting atmosphere, the ponies are well mannered, and the volunteers always sporting a kind smile and a quiet helpful hand. As you enter the arena, there is a poem on the wall written by John Anthony Davies that provides an emotional and accurate description of the experience – one of the paragraphs: “I saw a child who couldn’t walk Sit on a horse and laugh and talk, Then ride through a field of daisies And yet he could not walk unaided”
A little girl born without legs is wheeled to the mounting ramp in her wheelchair. The volunteers lift her and gently place her in the saddle and it is extraordinary to witness how the child’s spirits are visibly lifted. Sitting on her pony at a walk, she laughs as the volunteers throw a ball to her and she catches it and throws it back. The children each are given a cone with a tiny ball in, and they stretch to pass the ball through the cone from one to the other. They walk over poles, feeling the ponies move and stretch and turn, and whilst they are enjoying themselves their bodies are savouring the movement, and getting stronger with each lesson, moving the muscles that don’t always work in a wheelchair, developing core, balance, muscles and motor skills through enjoyment. At the end of the lesson, the children stretch over the pony’s necks, and feel their manes in their faces and soft hair under their fingers as their arms wrap around the pony’s necks. They are assisted off their ponies and give their steeds a rub or pat on the nose.

It is delightful to watch the ponies with their special riders – they are patient, cautious and seem to understand their special task at hand. When their young riders put their hands out to touch their noses, the ponies stretch and acknowledge the connection, their warm breath from their nostrils in the children’s smiling faces. The ponies are honoured at the entrance of the arena, each with their names engraved on wooden plaques, and pictures of each for the children to look at in between lessons. There are mirrors surrounding the sand arena, and a variety of poles and items neatly set out for the lessons, and helmets for the children balance on the hay bales. It is an organisation that provides a phenomenal service and is solely reliant on donors and fundraising, and Tracey explains that Gold Circle were the first corporate to get involved with this special cause. “Gold Circle were the first to come and see what we did in Summerveld, and have supported us since then, as far back as 2009. We could never have grown the way we have without their belief in us and their support. The hardest part of our work is finding funding to support 64

the increasing costs of keeping horses.” SARDA Durban receives support from the Lotto and a variety of corporate sponsors as well as an annual donation from the Vodacom Durban July. “We keep between six and eight ponies, six of which are in regular work and then the oldies, who do less or maybe a youngster that we are preparing.” With the synergy between Gold Circle, the Vodacom Durban July and SARDA Durban, it also highlights the versatility of the equine from their ability to race, yet also be capable of helping children who may have physical, cognitive, emotional and sensory disabilities. “We have children from five different special needs school environments and then children from a community NPO physiotherapy program and an orphanage. On average there are 30 - 40 children that ride with us per week and between 60 and 70 children on our books, each year, as new children join, and others leave the program. “When Gold circle came to support us, we only had one school riding regularly and a second one starting, with only
about 6 - 12 children and five volunteers!” Its thanks to the support of various donors that SARDA Durban has been able to expand its operation which included the covered riding arena, the Sensory Trail and being able to take care of the ponies. “Our youngest child has been about three years old, but most are from five to about seventeen years old. You cannot express how amazing the difference is that you see in the children - you must see and feel it for yourself, so we welcome visitors at any time. To see children, speak who have not spoken, to see them relax, to hear how their confidence has improved at home and school, to see them become braver is so incredibly rewarding!” The facility is beautifully equipped, with an indoor arena that makes it possible for children to never miss a lesson regardless of the weather. It also has a Sensory Trail, which Tracey says, “was literally a dream come true! It enabled us to maximise the use of the property and provide a safe area for
the children to ride out and explore. We have a track with different surfaces and logs to walk over, branches to duck under and a pond to splash in. Then we have a garden area with plants to touch, taste, smell and feel different textures.” Each riding lesson is held with qualified instructors and volunteers who assist the individual children for the duration of the ride and includes a series of fun exercises such as throwing a small ball from rider to rider and passing cones with balls inside them, from one to another. Each exercise has a specific aim to improve their physical and cognitive abilities, motor skills, strength and balance. “Its most rewarding to watch the growth and progress in the children who ride here with us, and also how much it comes to mean to them and to our volunteers who assist us.” It is difficult to leave Ridgetop Equestrian Centre without feeling humbled and emotional and incredibly awed by their inspiring work they provide for children in the vicinity of Hillcrest. “HORSES, MY GREATEST TEACHERS”
ASHLEY FORTUNE Not only is Ashley Fortune our newest female trainer, she is also a top horsewoman, with an incredible depth of knowledge, honed from years of working across a vast range of racehorse related jobs

hile an accomplished rider, she did not come from a horsey family and learnt to ride out of a book. Yet even as a youngster, her love of horses was incredibly strong. Watching the three-year old gelding, Rocky Night standing quietly with no halter, nuzzling her, you get an inkling of just why she has burst onto the racing scene in such a spectacular fashion, with several victories, including winning the second leg of the World Sports Betting Grand Heritage Series, already behind her name. “My dad rode motorbikes and was a Rhodesian and SA champion, so horses were never on his radar. Then we moved to a smallholding and all the neighbours had horses. One of my cousins showjumped, but my mom and dad weren’t keen on us jumping as it was scary going over poles. The next door neighbours played polocrosse and that’s how our love of polocrosse started.
Driving home with our first horse I remember thinking ‘oh my gosh, what if this is just a phase that I am going through’. Anyway that phase hasn’t ended”, she adds with a smile” It wasn’t long before the transition to racing occurred. When her father joined some friends in owning a couple of horses, Fortune was keen to learn more about these mercurial creatures. Discovering Garth Davis training privately just down the road, she offered her services and was soon helping out as much as she could at the yard. Next a stint at a stud farm introduced her to the early life of racehorses and Fortune soaked up as much knowledge as she possibly could. However the lure of a career in polocrosse briefly intervened, as she decided to pursue a childhood dream. “I always wanted to play for the Zimbabwe Ladies A side polocrosse team, which I managed to do. We actually came and beat SA.” Dream accomplished, Fortune, like so many youngsters headed overseas. “I ended up working in a National Hunt yard for Ian Williams. It was fantastic, and I loved it. I had always been opposed to jumps racing, but when you realise that the majority of those horses love their job, you can forgive the sport. It was a different environment and it teaches you so much. It shows you what horses can actually do. Interval training is just extraordinary, yet here only a few trainers train that way. Williams would train the 5km steeplechasers the same way as he was training his sprinters on the flat. Home however beckoned, and Fortune returned. Still seeking more knowledge she started helping out at her local vet. “They were teaching me how to do the anesthetics and I was in theatre with them. I loved that as well. And while I was doing that, I was also working for Lisa Harris. Mornings at her racing yard and the middle of the day at the vet. You kind of have to cover all aspects of the horse if you want to be successful”, she explains. Another stint overseas followed, before Fortune joined legendary Zimbabwean trainer Noelene Peach. “She is the most unbelievable trainer. If only I could have a quarter of her knowledge. She is amazing. She can see a horse and tell you exactly what it is or isn’t and what it needs or doesn’t. How does she do that? She taught me a lot and she is always at the end of the phone if I need her now” she adds.

Ashley met her future husband, top jockey Andrew Fortune, when he came to ride in Zimbabwe, while chasing the Jockeys’ Championship. And it wasn’t long before Fortune made the decision to follow Andrew back to South Africa. “I came to South Africa and Joey Ramsden was kind enough to let me work for him, which was awesome. Then my son Sean was born, and horses were put on the back burner

for a while. Obviously, Andrew was racing as well, so it was hard to stay in a yard. Then when Andrew had a knee replacement in July last year, I realised that I missed the racing. Andrew doesn’t, but he has been at it his whole life. “I just decided that I can’t die wondering what if? I had to do something, and Andrew was bored at home as much as he says he wasn’t”, she adds with a smile. “He absolutely loves the challenge of finding races for horses and getting owners. So I spoke to the stipes and asked them whether I could come and write my license. I had held my assistant license since 2005 so I had done the time. I finally wrote the exam and passed, despite Andrew begging them to fail me. That was never going to happen. “We decided to set up in Johannesburg as there are more options. We race three times a week here and you have more tracks to choose from as well. The stake money is also more, which keeps owners happier. Currently we have 78 horses in the yard of which 25 are racing and the rest are babies. We recently also bought some youngsters at the CTS Ready To Run Sale, taking us to 88. What is nice, is that the majority of our string are babies which means we have a good string for next year. Six months into her first year of training Fortune has not only been setting the tracks alight, but she has also thrown caution to the wind and decided to take on the tough Cape season with three runners. Rocky Night arrived first as he had qualified to

run in the CTS Ready To Run Stakes, while Big Blue Marble and Dalai’s Promise will be joining him later. “We were watching the CTS Ready To Run log and Rocky Night was quite high up. He is a very uncomplicated horse, he has such a lovely temperament and hence we thought he was mature enough to bring down here for the race. Winter Storm on the other hand, is still very immature. He would have travelled ok, but he is still soft.” While we admire Rocky Night, Andrew is keeping busy, straightening the gelding’s already perfect mane, pointing out his dapples and sneaking the odd pat when he thinks no one is watching. Fortune is quick to agree that Andrew is probably the yard’s best asset. “The way he can feel a horse, it’s incredible. I can do so much, but he can just feel so much. You need to know that your horses can run well. There might be a better horse out there, but you need to be confident that you have yours at their best and he is a brilliant judge of that. That is a huge asset, but also his callous approach and the way he says things. The owners love him for it. He tells them straight out whether their horse is worth having another run with or whether it is time to move it on.The owners actually appreciate him being such a straight talker.” A bright star on her way to an even brighter future. Yet what makes this pocket dynamo so successful? Ashley sums it up perfectly when she captions a photo of ‘Rocky’ and her having a cuddle with “I love and respect horses on an unparalleled level. My greatest teachers.”

Maybe it’s because a National Park and 50 natural hot springs are located near the track in scenic seclusion. More likely, it is the southern charm of its people and the tradition of incredible horses and competition.

egardless the reason, in the world of horse racing, it is a special place and one of a kind. If Saratoga Springs is the sport’s “Summer Place to Be,” then spring belongs to Oaklawn. During the first four months of each year, this racetrack surrounded by a mix of busy residential neighborhoods and small-town commercial districts, captures the hearts and imaginations of racing fans across North America. Located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Oaklawn Racing & Gaming has been a racing tradition since 1904. And while it is a racetrack that has never forgotten its glorious past, the one constant through the many years has been change — and consistent growth. Recent announcements have proven this will be the case for many years to come. What has not changed, however, is the track’s unparalleled habitat in western Arkansas. Hot Springs Location, location, location. So much of the appeal of Oaklawn is rooted in this town located in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas. Native Americans called the area “The Valley of the Vapors.” Naturally thermal spring waters flow out of the ground at an average temperature of 143 degrees and
produce almost one million gallons of water each day. More than two million annual visitors come to Hot Springs for the lakes, hiking, bike trails, museums, restaurants and shopping. And there is also America’s oldest and smallest national park. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson designated Hot Springs as the first federal reservation and years later when Congress established the National Park Service in 1916, Hot Springs Reservation became Hot Springs National Park five years later. Visitors come to soak in the warm waters at up to eight Victorian-style bathhouses from the 19th and 20th centuries on Bathhouse Row and the hot springs are also present in several downtown hotels, spas and public fountains. The Gangster Museum of America is located in downtown Hot Springs and showcases an incredible part of the city’s past when it was once a hotbed for illegal gambling, prostitution and bootlegging. In the 1930’s, the safe and secluded location was an ideal hangout for infamous mobsters including Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Bugs Moran and Frank Costello. Capone and his bodyguards would rent out entire floors of hotels and visitors to the Arlington Hotel today can book the suite where Capone used to stay. In the early part of the 20th Century, Hot Springs was also site of the creation of spring training for Major League Baseball. Each spring, as many as 250 players would

A nurse anesthetist, Kelley went to Oaklawn almost every day each season and When Charles died in 1940, the baton was passed to his when she introduced her son Bill to the sport when he was in son John G. Since the Festival’s inauguration in 1974, numerous racing legends have used the early April visit to Oaklawn as a launchpad for championship seasons. The names are a who’s who of Thoroughbred racing; Cigar, Smarty Jones, Azeri, Curlin, and American Pharoah. Zenyatta had come to Oaklawn that In 1968, John Cella died suddenly and his son Charles took week in 2010 after Charles Cella pursued the opportunity over as president of Oaklawn. Across the next fifty years, Cella to lure both she and fellow superstar Rachel Alexandra to helped turn Oaklawn into a major racing destination, bringing compete in the Apple Blossom for a purse of $5 million if both an increased level of innovation to the Arkansas track. In 1990, horses showed up. Rachel Alexandra did not show and the Oaklawn pioneered full-card interstate simulcasting. Sixteen purse reverted to $500,000. Zenyatta, however, did go on to years prior in 1974, Cella and team launched something new capture her second Apple Blossom and proceed through a that would change racing at Oaklawn and American horse season that would culminate with her being named Horse of the Year. racing forever. It was named the Racing Festival of the South. Oaklawn continued to grow in both purses and attendance throughout the 1950’s and in 1962, the track reached the number five spot on the list of the most profitable and successful racetracks in North America.
A Springboard to Greatness On a beautiful spring morning in April of 2010, nearly 100 people including racing owners, trainers, members of the media and fans gathered on the backstretch of Oaklawn to watch a 6-year-old mare graze — for close to one hour. Zenyatta, however, was not just any mare. She had journeyed from California to Hot Springs in order to attempt to win her 16th consecutive race later that afternoon in the (GI) Apple Blossom Handicap. The Apple Blossom is one of the marquee races in the Racing Festival of the South during one of the richest weeks of racing in North America. The Festival showcases anywhere from three to five days of top quality racing, a model that has been emulated at other tracks.
Next to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the Personal Ensign Stakes, the Apple Blossom is the richest American race for fillies and mares with a $700,000 purse and the first grade one stakes on the racing calendar. The centerpiece of the Racing Festival of the South and the entire meet remains the $1,000,000 (GI) Arkansas Derby. The Derby is preceded by prep races including the (GII) Rebel Stakes, which will also be a $1 million race beginning this year. In 2004, fan favorite Smarty Jones used triumphs in Oaklawn’s Southwest Stakes, Rebel and Arkansas Derby en route to classic wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Three years later, Curlin won the Rebel and Arkansas Derby at the beginning of a Hall-of-Fame road that led to two Horse of the Year honors and four Eclipse Awards.

Trainer Bob Baffert has been highly successful at Oaklawn over the years, garnering career earnings of more than $6 million with just 56 starters. In March of 2015, Baffert shipped American Pharoah from California to Oaklawn for the beginning of his 3-year-old campaign. In the Rebel, the horse went gate-to-wire to triumph by 61/4 lengths. Four weeks later, American Pharoah challenged a field of seven others in the Arkansas Derby and established himself as the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby after an easy eight-length victory. A Triple Crown trail had begun on a one-mile dirt oval track in Arkansas, a 37-year drought would soon end and the rest is history. Trainers in large part, especially those from the West Coast, like to run at Oaklawn because the track is very similar in composition to Churchill Downs. If a horse likes running at the Hot Springs oval, chances are that may carry over to the first Saturday in May.
opening date to two weeks later than normal on January 25 and run through May 4 which is three weeks after the Arkansas Derby. “Frankly, it’s all about the weather,” said Louis Cella.“We wanted to make sure that was right for the city of Hot Springs. This was not just a one-dimensional decision, just for Oaklawn. This is for our horseman. We hear it all the time over the years. Can we get out of January?” In November, Oaklawn Racing & Gaming announced plans to build an expansion project in excess of $100 million. This will include the construction of a high-rise hotel on the premises, a multi-purpose event center, a larger gaming area, and additional on-site parking. The hotel will be seven stories with 200 rooms, and adjacent to the hotel will be the events center that will accommodate up to 1,500 people across 14,000 square feet. The current 50,000 square foot gaming facility will be expanded by an additional 28,000 square feet and will continue to provide year-round entertainment with Instant Racing, simulcasting and electronic games of skill, including blackjack, craps and poker. Oaklawn is known for having one of the best models in the country for racing and gaming to work hand in hand. Gaming exists to support racing and when live racing occurs, it generates strong gaming revenues for the year.
Horizon When Charles J. Cella died in December of 2017 after nearly 50 years as president of Oaklawn, a fourth generation of the Cella family took over the leadership role when son Louis was named successor. In the year that has passed, Oaklawn has continued to evolve with two significant announcements. The gaming expansion is targeted for completion in January Last April, it was revealed the track would extend 2019’s 57- of 2020 and the hotel and events center for late 2020. “This day meet by three weeks. The revised schedule will push the represents a new chapter in the rich 114-year history of

Oaklawn,” says Louis Cella. “As we enhance the entertainment experience for our customers, we will also further elevate Thoroughbred racing and help make Arkansas and Hot Springs even stronger regional tourism destinations.” Oaklawn is expecting to have purses at close to $32 million going into 2019 and the hope is the overall expansion will enable the track to provide larger purses to help attract the top Thoroughbreds and thus, continue a tradition that has grown with time. Family Much like Saratoga Springs, New York and Lexington, Kentucky, the entire town of Hot Springs embraces racing. Oaklawn is Arkansas’ number one tourist destination and everyone benefits. And the track embraces patrons with engaging promotions throughout the meet via boat and truck giveaways, 50 Cent Corned Beef Day, and progressive cash giveaways among other enticing campaigns. For Oaklawn’s Director of Media Relations Jennifer Hoyt, the premise is simple. “Our racing attracts the true racing fans but you always want to keep bringing in new and fresh people and I think the promotions allow us to do that,” says Hoyt. “If they come here and they have a really good experience, they are going to come back.”
Oaklawn infield, a beautiful park-like setting which opens during springtime Saturdays in mid-March. Infield patrons will discover a petting zoo, live music, a craft beer garden and a Kids Zone. “The infield is a great way to expose young families and children to horse racing and they are the future of our sport,” says Hoyt. Spend any length of time at Oaklawn or in Hot Springs and you will notice it right away. The people. They are different. Perhaps it is just southern hospitality but it feels like something more. It feels like — family. And a family atmosphere is very real at the track. As one of the state’s top employers, it is only natural to find husbands and wives, brothers and sisters and mothers and children working together within the same company. “There are people employed here at Oaklawn who have been here 20, 30 years,” says Jennifer Hoyt. “And I think whenever you have that, you have people who take ownership in the company. And that resonates with fans because they feel like they are being welcomed as family and they do see the same people year after year and come back and visit.”
To understand Oaklawn and its appeal, the words of the late Charles J. Cella may explain it best. “I’m a racetrack guy. I truly love racing. It’s my life. I’ve devoted my adult years to it. I am proud of the way Oaklawn has worked to present the right atmosphere of horse racing — the tradition, the basic values, That experience includes watching Thoroughbreds from the the pageantry of the sport.”
