News of the Sun Met broke just after our previous edition.The Cape’s most famous race,The Cape Metropolitan Stake, will don a brand new jacket in 2017, with Sun International stepping in to refresh this iconic race. Along with big names, Investec, GH Mumm, CTS, Klavervlei and Kuda, this race is set to become the biggest on African soil with near to R20 Million available on race day. More about this on page 10 & 18. Michele MacDonald spends some time with trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert’s recent success makes him the only trainer in history to win America’s richest race,The Breeders’ Cup Classic, run over 1 1/4 miles, three consecutive times with three unique stars. More about this on page 40. Michele then turns to three times recipient of an Eclipse Award and shoe in for her fourth, the magnificent mare, Beholder, fresh from yet another Breeders’ Cup Distaff win. he abundant stakes and racing opportunities of the Sun Met, celebrated with Mumm, are serving to stimulate the South African horse racing market and attract local and international buyers to this prestigious event.

The stakes are high for the Western Cape’s flagship race, the Metropolitan Stakes, totalling R5 million. Other races, including the CTS Mile and the CTS Sprint, have stakes of US $500 000 each, and a newly conceptualised two-yearold race, the Kuda Sprint, has a stake of R1 million. The prestigious racing day has attracted a range of premium sponsors, and the boosted prize money is contributing to raise the standards of racing on the African continent. In January 2016 Investec sponsored the Day of Dreams, which incorporated three prestigious races, the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, the Investec Cape Derby and the CTS Million Dollar – Africa’s richest thoroughbred race. These took place on 23 January 2016 at Kenilworth Racecourse, and the first five placers walked away with a total of US$1 million. Investec is returning the Cape Derby to the Sun Met, celebrated with Mumm, as well as Klawervlei with the Majorca Stakes. Additionally Cape Thoroughbred Sales have also agreed to add their seal of approval with both their US$500000 sales races. Therefore, in 2017, the 13-race Sun Met, celebrated with

Mumm, will be returning to the previous festival format, boasting the Grade 1 Metropolitan Stakes, the Grade 1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship, the Grade1 Investec Cape Derby, the Grade1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, the Grade 2 Western Cape Stayers, the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes as well as the two US$500 000 CTS sales races. How CTS sales enhance SA racing Last year’s 1400 metre CTS Million Dollar has been split into two races – a 1200 metre race, the CTS Sprint, and a 1600 metre race, the CTS Mile. “The US$1million stake has been split across these two races.This appeals to a broader range of participants, and so more horses will race on the day,” says Adrian Todd, MD of Cape Thoroughbred Sales. “This increases the opportunities available for graduates of the CTS yearling sales in South Africa.” And if the same owner has a winning horse in both races, they will win an additional US$1 million. All the horses that run in the CTS Mile and the CTS Sprint are purchased on auction from Cape Thoroughbred Sales, which is an independent, commercial sales company dedicated to the growth of horseracing and the thoroughbred breeding industry.

BAFFERT SHAPES YET ANOTHER CLASSIC CHAMPION

ust two years ago, in the autumn of 2014, major American media outlets such as the Associated Press and ESPN focused on what was called Bob Baffert’s “0-for-12 skid” in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. In their portrayals, the famed white-haired trainer just couldn’t hone one of his stable stars sharp enough to get the job done in the continent’s richest race over 1 ¼ miles at the end of the season. Fast forward to 2016 and there was Baffert in the winner’s circle at Santa Anita Park, hoisting up his third consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic trophy and grinning the jubilant smile that comes with reaching a heretofore unclimbed summit of professional achievement. In the relatively short span of time since early November 2014, Baffert transformed his record from never having won the Classic to now standing as the only trainer in history to win the race three times, not to mention three consecutive times and with three extraordinarily different types of runners. This year’s winner, the relatively untested three-year-old Arrogate, drew from his trainer the highest kind of compliment:a comparison in raw talent to his 2015 victor,Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, the only horse in history to stride triumphantly through the Grand Slam of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic. “Every year I’ve been so lucky,” a gratified Baffert reflected after witnessing Arrogate catch and then surpass California Chrome, America’s all-time leading earner and this year’s Dubai World Cup winner, in the Classic stretch. “I always say: ‘How am I going to top this year?’ And it’s been going on for all my life.This is what keeps my juices flowing. “I’m telling you, after American Pharoah retired last year, I was in a really - I wouldn’t say a funk, it was just like a lull.You know, I really missed that horse so much. I still miss him.” Yet, in one of those twists of fate that make horse racing such a magical sport, another horse was placed in American Pharoah’s Stall 33 in Baffert’s Barn 5 at Santa Anita Park, and that horse turned out to be Juddmonte Farm’s Arrogate, a son of Unbridled’s Song purchased by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s stable specifically to be trained by Baffert. 42

Or maybe the paths trod by Arrogate and American Pharoah happened to intersect with Breeders’ Cup Classic glory due to Baffert’s uncanny ability to bring out the best in a young horse. “He’s in the same stall that Pharoah was,” said Baffert, emphasizing the serendipity. “It’s incredible that I’ve been so lucky. … Who’d have thought I’d have another horse like American Pharoah? (Arrogate) is doing some of the same things as Pharoah did. “Somebody up there is really looking down on me,” Baffert added, glancing at the heavens above him. Arrogate and American Pharoah both proved themselves to be brilliant, extraordinary runners, although their careers have developed totally differently. By the time his juvenile season had ended, American Pharoah reigned as a champion and winner of two Grade 1 races with his Grand Slam just ahead of him. Arrogate, on the other hand did not make his debut on the racetrack until April of this year; the Classic marked only Arrogate’s sixth start. But before those two came along, Baffert’s breakthrough star was the blocky bull of a colt named Bayern, who stormed his way through the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic. A three-year-old, just like American Pharoah and Arrogate at the time of their Classic victories, Bayern bumped into 2013 champion two-year-old Shared Belief soon after the break to seize an early lead that he never relinquished, turning back both eventual 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome and UAE Derby winner Toast of New York in a dogged three-way fight to the wire. An anxious Baffert watched the race with trepidation and then nervously waited for the photo finish image and for the stewards to review the roughly run contest. “It’s been so long waiting (for a Classic win), I was like, ‘Lord, you can’t take it away from me now. I couldn’t breathe the last 20 yards,” Baffert said immediately after that race. “It’s been so many years in the making and to finally get it done was just so great.”

When he was asked during that post-Classic news conference if he was happy that the media would stop asking him about why he had not won the race, Baffert quipped: “There’s always something that they have to ask me. ‘What haven’t you done yet,’ you know? But I guess the next question is ‘When are you going to be on Dancing With the Stars?’ or something like that.”

“It’s a lot of pressure to train a horse like this because I didn’t want to let the horse down and I didn’t want to let the fans down,” Baffert explained. “I’m just so proud of him; it’s like watching my child out there.”

“This was for Pharoah,” exclaimed an emotional Baffert, knowing he would have to say good-bye to his Triple Crown winner just two days later when the colt was retired to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. “We wanted him to go out the champion he is. “It’s a horse racing fairy tale, and I just happen to be in it,” he added almost reverently.

Baffert related that the gray Arrogate, who is sculpted like an equine linebacker with a massive frame but who is agile and quick, experienced sore shins as a two-year-old and was sent to the sidelines to recover and grow into his body. I said, ‘Garrett, I think I’ve found one that’s going to pay for all of them.’ I said, ‘I think we’ve stumbled on to a really good horse,’ ” Baffert related. “And he showed run as a two-year-old, (but) he had some shin problems. He was a big, tall horse, so Garrett said, ‘You know what, just give him the time. Don’t worry about it.’ ” Their patience was rewarded, even though Arrogate did not make his first career start - and this puts the Classic into even a sharper perspective - until three weeks after California Chrome had captured this year’s $10 million Dubai World Cup in a performance that catapulted him to the top of the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. Arrogate’s debut at Los Alamitos Race Course was not sparkling. After breaking slowly, he found himself in tight quarters around the far turn until he produced a rally that came up short. He finished third, a half-length and a neck behind the winner, Westbrook, who has not been able to win again since then. 44

However, Arrogate has proved unstoppable after that entrance to racing, and he blitzed through a maiden event at Santa Anita and allowance races at that track and Del Mar prior to Baffert shooting at bigger targets. Despite what happened with American Pharoah at Saratoga in 2015, Baffert sent Arrogate to the Travers for what was his first-ever run in stakes competition. With Preakness winner Exaggerator and Belmont winner Creator in the field of 13, it was a most demanding assignment - at least on paper. Once Arrogate left the starting gate, only stable mate American Freedom and Laoban briefly went ahead of them. Soon, Arrogate was bounding along in front, setting strong fractions but never seeming to take a deep breath. The chart of the Travers includes phrases like “extended his stride” and “widened away,” but those words don’t come close to the power of the performance, which Arrogate accomplished in only 1:59.36 and by 13 ½ lengths. It was the fastest Travers performance in the 147 years the venerated race has been run. “I still can’t believe the way he kept on rolling. It was just incredible,” Baffert said. Defying the conventional path that other trainers might have taken had they possessed a colt like Arrogate and with a target like the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Baffert decided to just train him from the Travers on August 27 to the Classic on

had been so successful with American Pharoah.

The unorthodox approach had worked with American Pharoah, Baffert noted, and Arrogate had never really been pushed in his training to accomplish what he had in the Travers.

“You can do that when you have a great horse,” Baffert said. “We show up for the big days, we lead them up there, and you just pray and hope that they show up.”

“We never let him go in the mornings. We never let him run,” Baffert said. “He came around on his own.”

Arrogate most certainly showed up, and he was well respected for the Classic. Made the clear second choice in the field of nine that included the likes of last year’s runner-up Effinex; Godolphin’s at times brilliant multiple Grade 1 winner Frosted; Keen Ice, the 2015 conqueror of American Pharoah in the Travers, and another Baffert trainee, multiple Grade 1-winning Hoppertunity, Arrogate did not soar to the early lead as he had in Saratoga.

Although apparently meant as an amusing prank, Baffert had the sale ticket signed with the name “Ed Savant” when he bought Bayern as a two-year-old for owner Kaleem Shah at the FasigTipton Midlantic auction. Yet savant, which means sage or guru, probably most accurately describes what Baffert is and how he operates as a trainer. He relies on his unique instincts in both picking out young horses, as he did with Bayern and Arrogate, and developing them and others into the array of champions he has trained. A former Quarter Horse jockey, he has frequently said that he learned to train on his own, and continues to train, by “trial and error mostly error. “You want them to have fun,” he said of the horses in his care.“If I don’t like the way a horse looks, if he has his ears pinned back, I’ll send him to the farm, let him go be a horse for a while.” With Arrogate, a fresh colt who clearly possessed extraordinary talent, Baffert’s instincts told him to just train from the Travers to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, particularly since the same tactics

Victor Espinoza sent California Chrome to the lead, a strategy that had been so successful for him in a series of devastating wins over the summer capped by a pair of Grade 1 events, the Pacific Classic and Awesome Again Stakes. Coming out of the far turn, Espinoza started looking over his right shoulder to see who might be coming to challenge. Smith ducked inside with Arrogate, going past Melatonin, and Espinoza prepared for the challenge to come up the rail. But Smith, knowing that California Chrome has preferred to run in the clear and not be stuck on the rail, pulled Arrogate back outside just at the time Espinoza was turning around to look again, this time over his left shoulder - and finding to his apparent surprise that Arrogate was not there. With Smith having won the cat-and-mouse game, Arrogate powered closer until he finally was head to flank and then shoulder to shoulder with California Chrome. His nimbleness in going first inside and then back outside, without losing his momentum, was remarkable for a big colt and so was his finishing kick. As if suddenly propelled by an otherworldly force, he drew away from his older and far more accomplished rival and crossed the finish line a half-length in front. The time of 2:00.11, with the conditions factored in, yielded a lifetime best Beyer Speed Figure for California Chrome at 119. But Arrogate earned a 120 figure and also passed California Chrome to stand atop the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings at an assignment of 134, which, incredibly, is one pound higher than the assessment given by the rankings committee to American Pharoah at the same point in his career. Smith spoke for many when he described Arrogate’s Classic finish, which is likely to earn the colt an Eclipse Award as America’s champion three-year-old male, especially considering that the winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes (Nyquist, Exaggerator and Creator) had been retired before the season-capping Classic.

This horse is dancing like this?’ And I said, ‘He’s just got air forever,’ ” Smith said. “Arrogate wasn’t even blowing when he came back,” Baffert noted. “It was like, when are we going to do this again?” Baffert and O’Rourke both paid tribute to Prince Khalid, who had the idea to make a new West Coast stable in the mold of the string of Grade 1-winning horses he once had with the late Bobby Frankel, for whom he named his great and undefeated European champion Frankel. Juddmonte President Dr. John Chandler summed up the international operation’s Classic experience by saying, simply but profoundly, in light of the many other outstanding runners campaigned by Juddmonte: “This has got to be one of the greatest things we’ve done.”

Always playfully witty, Chandler then made a wry observation “I was just in awe of what he did and the horse he beat,” considering the storylines just two years earlier, before Bayern Smith said. “He was relentless - he never stops. Welcome to the 2016 Breedersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Cup held at Santa Anita Park, in Arcadia, California. And before you ask where Arcadia is, it is roughly 21km northeast of downtown Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Behind the San Gabriel Mountains lies the Mojave Desert hence the vegetation in Arcadia leans towards palm trees, while the weather is temperate all year round. A very confusing fact for a visitor from the Southern Hemisphere! 62

notice two things on arrival at Los Angeles airport. The Hollywood sign up on the hillside (hey I have finally seen it in real life!) and the searing heat. This is the Northern Hemisphere where it is currently late Autumn/early Winter in a country where it always snows, right? Yet I might as well be home in the Cape on a hot January summer’s day. The 30 degrees Celsius scrambles my brain, it is just all wrong.

I have been a pony and all I see is his massive bum. That colt has a massive promised spectacular sunrises, but apparently that only happens engine I remember thinking. The horses work in four individual sessions, with a procession of giant tractors coming on in between to groom the track. I stick a foot under the rail to get a feel of the dirt. And it is just that, dirt. Not the sand of the Meydan dirt track, no pure dirt. It compacts easily and I can see the need for the regular loosening of the surface. Another difference here is that everything has a pony to lead it onto the track, possibly control it while it warms up and then catch and lead it back. Once the O’Brien string appears trackside the next day, I begin to understand the need for these ponies. Used to the green turf tracks of Ireland, where each group works in single file at a steady pace, theses Irish imports were completely lost. Horses whizzing past in all directions did nothing to improve their mental state and even globetrotting Highland Reel did some interesting sideways and upwards manoeuvres on the track, while sweating profusely.The juvenile fillies’ eyes are on stalks as they ping-pong around the track and it thus comes as no surprise to see the Joseph O’Brien trained Intricately being ponied.Well not quite, as much to the bystanders’ delight, Joseph himself was doing the ponying. 66

The Breeders’ Cup goes by in a blur of colour and new terminology. Backstretch, stretch run, breeze, shed row, wraps, while betting terminology offers terms such as show, wheel and breakage. I feel like an alien in a world that should be completely familiar to me. The racing however is familiar. Great horses duelling down the home straight, fierce competition and gallant winners. This is the Breeders’ Cup after all. I will forever remember the head-bobbing duel of Songbird and Beholder in the Distaff. I fell in love with Beholder during morning trackwork and was thrilled when she won. A great mare bowing out with a great victory. Highland Reel and I are old acquaintances and when he was allowed to skip clear in the Turf under Seamie Heffernan, I knew that the rest would have a devil of a job catching him.The Classic was billed as belonging to California Chrome, but remember that giant grey backside of Arrogate? Well it did what any good engine does. It propelled Arrogate down the straight and into history. From a claiming race to Breeders’ Cup Classic victory in three races, extraordinary! My time was up, my first racing visit to the States coming to an end. I had always been rather hesitant to come, due to the unfamiliar dirt racing and the different drug rules, but it was worth every minute of the 40-hour flight to get there. And I will definitely be back next year. After all, I am now rather addicted to burritos for breakfast!

DENNIS DRIER

ennis Drier has arrived in the Cape for his annual raid on the Cape Summer season.A friendly, approachable trainer, he is always happy to chat. With almost 50 years of training under his belt, I think one can safely say that there is very little about training a racehorse that Drier doesn’t know. Hence I grabbed the opportunity to get to know the man behind the ready smile, a little better. It turns out his yearly visit is not actually a visit, as Drier is a born and bred Capetonian, who sports a blue-blooded pedigree when it comes to racing.

“My dad was a jockey, but I lost him when I was ten. My mom is Syd Laird’s sister and she never remarried till much later, so I spent most of my time at my grandfather’s Roamer Lodge in Milnerton. I attended Christian Brothers College (CBC) Green Point and I remember playing under-ten rugby on Green Point common. My mom had to work, so I had to catch a bus from Green Point to the Cape Town Parade and from the Parade back to Milnerton to get home. Then my mom and uncle decided to send me to boarding school to CBC Kimberley. It was a long journey by train and I only came home twice a year. It made me tough. I have had my ups and downs but you don’t seem to remember the downs”, he reminisces.

Master of My Fate

Having grown up around racehorses, one would have thought that Drier could not wait to become a trainer himself. Yet it was the last thing his family wanted. “My uncle wouldn’t let me come into the horse business as I was a good sportsman. I played cricket for Western Province Cricket Club and rugby for Villagers in between playing for Milnerton. Milnerton wouldn’t release me and so I had to play for Villagers under a different name, Dreyer instead of Drier. My family wanted me to persevere with my sport but the love for the horse was never out of my veins.” Upon leaving school, Drier took up a position with clothing manufacturer Rex Trueform as a trainee rep. Drier takes up the story. “In 1968 I was working for Rex Trueform and Syd didn’t have an assistant. He phoned my mom about something and I happened to be home that evening. So I asked him what’s happening. He told me to organise some boxes as he was coming down to the Cape in two weeks. So I asked him who is going to look after the horses in Durban and he said I am still looking for someone, he said ‘I think Freddy Chappell’, who was a retired trainer. So I said no, I’ll come. So he said listen I don’t want any shit from your mother. Speak to mom and if she agrees you can come. So

I spoke to mom and she was happy with my decision. She knew where the blood was flowing. My boss at the time said sometimes these family things don’t work out so if you ever come back to Cape Town, your job will be here waiting for you. He was such a nice guy. But I never came back. I have been in Durban ever since.” Having trained some outstanding sprinters, as well as a July winner, I ask Drier which of the great horses he has work with stand out for him. I was expecting his July winner Spanish Galliard to occupy top position, but he surprises me, when he names a far more recent star as the best horse he has ever trained. A horse he refers to simply as Master. “Great horses? I have had some greats; Master (Of My Fate), hell that was some horse. He was the best horse I have ever trained. I won the July with Spanish Galliard. He was just an honest, honest horse, didn’t know what it was to run a bad race. I think he ran second in every single feature I entered him in. He ran second in the Champions Stakes, second in the Queen’s Plate and second in the Met. He ran second in everything. I brought him here once and gave him a run in the Cape Merchants and he ran second in that too. And then his

day came. Well drawn, well weighted and he won the July. But he wasn’t as good as Harmony Forever or Master Of My Fate. “Master you never saw the best of. Even the years with my uncle,Yatagan, Politician, Ocean City and I still rate Master as the best I have ever trained. He was so unlucky in the Met; he got so badly interfered with. How he didn’t come down I don’t know and he still managed to run fifth. He had killed the horses that finished in front of him in the Premiers and the Peninsula Handicap. He won the Premiers and they gave him 14 points. They all said there is no way he can win the Peninsula, but he did. We never saw the best of him.” The look of sadness as he remembers the premature end to Master Of My Fate’s career is almost unbearable. “His injury started here, in the Met. Once we got back to Durban, Sean (Cormack) said he isn’t lame, but there is just something. We checked and the vet checked, but we couldn’t find

anything. Then we got the farrier to change his shoes; we thought maybe his feet were bothering him. Then the one morning I just gave him a little pace work on the top grass at Summerveld. Now I love that top grass, all my feature winners work on it, all of them, even the two-year-olds. I love that track, but he came out of that gallop not so well. “The vet thought he had given his tendon a rap, so we scanned him and there it was.There was a hole in his tendon. Sean had felt it all along, yet he was never lame. It was there and he was telling us. He should have been unbeaten. He was a naughty boy, but he was never malicious. Sean always said, if I fall off Chave De Oura I will shit myself because he will have a go at me, but if I fall off Master he wouldn’t do a thing. You know those big Dutchmen that are so strong, but they don’t know how strong they are and when they put their arm around you, they squash you? That’s what Master was like. He was never malicious.

“The first time he was beat, I said to Sean, don’t knock him about. It was a twenty-horse field down the straight at Clairwood. A 1200m and at the 400m he was still second last and he only got beaten half a neck. After that he won six in a row, straight into the Met. He was only just becoming a horse. You never saw the best of him,” Drier reiterates again, making sure that I understand just how good his beloved Master was. Master of My Fate retired to Varsfontein Stud and one can but hope that some of that fleeting brilliance will shine again in his offspring. Drier may still miss Master, but as the old saying goes, “no trainer ever committed suicide with an unraced two-yearold in the barn”, and Drier has plenty. One in particular, a chestnut filly by the name of Miss Frankel, brings a gleam to his eye. By the unbeaten Frankel who commands a stud fee of a mere £125,000 out of the Equus Champion

Sprinter Val De Ra, Miss Frankel is almost as blue-blooded as Drier himself. Statistically speaking, only 5% of stallions are successful at stud, yet Frankel has taken the world by storm. Not only has his offspring commanded staggering prices with two fillies selling for €1,8 million and €1,9 million respectively, but 15 of his 35 offspring to race, have won on debut. I wonder aloud what the pressure must be like to train such an expensive, well-bred filly. Drier however seems unfazed. “I have known Pippa (Mickleburgh, Avontuur’s Stud Manager) and the Taberer boys forever and that made it very easy. At first I was very, very nervous and then I thought, ‘hey you trained the mother and you couldn’t have done any better with her, she only got beat twice. And you are under no pressure to run the filly further than a 1000m, 1200m’. Then when I gave her her first canter, then I wasn’t worried anymore. She gave me goosebumps. She is a just a natural. It is all so effortless for her. But listen when she has her first run I will most probably be sitting in the loo”, he concludes with a chuckle.

Bloodstock South Africa graduates enjoyed another tremendous year in 2016, when they proved competitive at the highest level both locally and abroad.

he year kicked off in great style, when BSA buy, Legal Eagle (Greys Inn –Young Sensation), landed the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth. Bred by Avontuur, Legal Eagle, a R325 000 purchase from the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, would go on to win both the G1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes and G1 President’s Champions Challenge. The Sean Tarry trained gelding would later be named Horse

Of The Year (the third consecutive BSA graduate to win that award) and Equus Champion Miler and Older Male. Legal Eagle, who recently made a promising return to racing, looks on track for another tilt at the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Legal Eagle, however, was by no means the only Bloodstock South Africa graduate to garner Equus Award honours. The Cheveley Stud bred, Bela-Bela (Dynasty –Mystic Spring), and the Mauritzfontein Stud bred, Marinaresco (Silvano- Gay

Fortuna), were named Equus Champion 3YO Filly and Colt/ Gelding. Bela-Bela, the regally bred half-sister to ill-fated champion, Rabiya (Jallad), cost R1.4 million at the 2014 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale and enjoyed a magnificent season in 2015-2016, when her four wins included the G1 Woolavington 2200 and G2 Daisy Fillies Guineas. Marinaresco, who, like Legal Eagle, looks a major challenge for G1 races in 2017, was yet another Bloodstock South Africa purchase who shone during the year. The son of Silvano scored an extremely emotional win when providing retiring legendary trainer, Mike Bass, with a final win in the very fittingly named G1 Mike And Carol Bass Champions Cup on the final day of the 2015-2016 season. Marinaresco, who cost R1.3 million at the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, also won the first two legs of the Winter Series and finished a close second in the G1 Vodacom Durban July. Another BSA graduate who did himself proud during 2016 was the Lammerskraal Stud bred, Abashiri (Go DeputyDonya).The gelding made his R400 000 price tag at the 2014

Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale when he lifted the 2016 South African Triple Crown, a series which includes the G2 Gauteng Guineas, G1 SA Classic and G1 SA Derby. In the process, Abashiri picked up a R2 million bonus for his sweep of the Triple. Other BSA graduates to pick up major feature races during the season included Juxtapose, who won both the G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, and Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s My Turn who showed his class when romping home to a two length win over the Australian bred Brazuca and subsequent major feature race winners, Marinaresco and Black Arthur, in the G1 Investec Cape Derby. First BSA sale of the year was the 2016 Val De Vie Yearling Sale, which took place at Val De Vie Estate on February 14th. The one day sale was topped by lot 9, a Var colt consigned by Varsfontein Stud as agent, knocked down to Adriaan Van Vuurenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Misty Meadows Racing for R1 500 000. Named Varlocity, the colt is a half-brother to ill-fated G1 Golden Horseshoe winner, War Horse (Victory Moon) and the Van

Vuuren owned G2 Supreme Cup hero, Deputy Jud (Judpot). Val De Vie graduates of 2015 also made their mark on the South African turf this year, with graded winners and classic hopes, Doosra, Final Judgement, Gold Standard, and Hack Green, all having been purchased at this sale. The National Yearling Sale is South Africa’s oldest premier yearling sale, and churns out champions (Legal Eagle and Marinaresco being just two such examples) on a regular basis. The 2016 sale, which was held at the end of April, was topped by a Wilgerbosdrift consigned Trippi filly named Lara Yara, who was knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R2.5 million. Lara Yara is out of the stakes winning Tiger Ridge mare, Ilha Grande, a daughter of former Horse Of The Year, Ilha Da Vitoria (Candy Stripes). Top priced colt sold at the 2016 National Sale was the Silvano colt, Pietro Mascagni, who was consigned by Varsfontein Stud. A half-brother to former 2YO Sale topper, La Roquette, Pietro Mascagni is out of a full sister to former Equus Champion 2YO Colt, Ice Cube (Western Winter). KZN’s Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale is one of South Africa’s most

popular and progressive yearling sales in the country, and was once again well supported in 2016. Top lot sold at this year’s KZN Sale was Graham’s Fame, a colt by the hugely promising young sire, Philanthropist (Kris S), who was sold to Mario Ferreira for R1 050 000. The colt, consigned by Highlands Farm, is out of a mare by Philanthropist’s close relative, National Assembly and hailed from the same family as the very fast fillies Franny (Trippi) and Sweet Sanette (Jallad), among others. With new sales races on offer for its graduates, the 2016 National Two Year Old Sale proved one of the hits of the South African equine auction calendar. Both the aggregate and average price were up on last year, with the average price rising by nearly 35%. Progeny of Maine Chance Farms’ champion sire, Silvano, were once again in demand, with the top lot being a Silvano colt consigned by Klipdrif (as Agent). The colt, a halfbrother to G2 Betting World 1900 winner and former July hope, Solid Speed (Dynasty), was sold to Form Bloodstock for R2 100 000. In a first for South Africa, the 2017 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival will be held over two days, in a similar fashion as overseas racing festivals, such the five day Royal Ascot Festival. Eight races are carded for Friday the 6th of January, including the Gr.2 Sceptre Stakes, a weight for age race for Fillies and Mares over 1200m. L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate’s inaugural, exclusive Garden Party will also take place on the Friday. Guests can look forward to feasting on bottomless champagne and sumptuous picnic baskets, while listening to the soothing sounds of a four-piece jazz band.

aturday, the 7th of January will feature a ten-race card including two Grade 1 races, the R1 million, Gr.1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes (WFA) for Fillies and Mares over 1800m and the main feature of the Festival, the 156th running of the R1 million Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queens’ Plate (WFA) over 1600m. Both races are “Win and You’re In” Breeders Cup races, meaning that victory in either race entitles the winner to run in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup races on the 3rd and 4th of November at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, San Diego, California. The Breeders’ Cup is consider to be the World Championship of horseracing and spanning over two-days, with prize money in excess of $26 million, it attracts the best horses, trainers, and owners from across the globe. In 2016, the filly Smart Call won the Paddock Stakes and her connections decided to take up the offer to run her in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf held at Santa Anita Park, California. Unfortunately Smart Call injured herself just before the race and had to withdraw. In another exciting move however, it was recently announced that a shipment including some of South Africa’s best racehorses could possibly depart for the United States in early March. Once their 60-day on arrival quarantine is completed, these horses would be eligible to take part in such

races as the Gr.1 Arlington Million, the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes and of course the Breeders’ cup itself. Derek Brugman, the man behind the innovative scheme explains: “The idea is to fill a plane with 15 of the best horses. We have written to trainers and already the owners of Marinaresco and Silver Mountain have said they want to join us.We are waiting to hear from others and we will probably throw in the July winner, The Conglomerate. The horses will do whatever South African quarantine is required, probably a fortnight for the various injections and vaccinations to be done.They will then fly to New York at the end of February or the beginning of March and do a 60-day lockdown in the quarantine station there. It has become too cumbersome to travel via Mauritius and our horses will now be able to use a treadmill when they are in the quarantine station. We can decide about who will train them at a later stage but the idea is that they will take on the turf horses in the States.” An exciting move that is bound to attract some high class competitors to both the Gr.1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes and the Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queens’ Plate. ain conspired to cut short the final meeting of the Air Mauritius International Jockeys’ Challenge but those in attendance at Turffontein Racecourse were treated to the famous Frankie Dettori flying dismount, not once but twice. And those in attendance didn’t have to wait long either as the captain of the international team delivered with his first ride of the day, aboard the Joe Soma trained Turn Back Time, as his side tried to peg back the deficit.

Heading into the meeting each of the respective captains were rooted to the bottom of the rider’s standings but that changed very quickly in Johannesburg as S’manga Khumalo delivered aboard Duzi Moon in the sixth race. “The race was easy for me. It’s great for the public and for me that the fight is back on and were catching up,” Dettori said after his win in the opener. “Shot!” he added, using one of South African racing’s more popular expressions.

The double was completed for Dettori after the seventh as he got Seattle Lady home for an easy victory and in turn sealed up the Victor Ludorum prize, not only for the day, but for the overall competition. For that particular winning interview, Dettori recalled how a bird had provided some lucky inspiration earlier on that morning.

RIVETING WIN FOR DES SCOTT Irish juvenile colt Rivet added yet another European Gr1 win to his sire Fastnet Rockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s score, and made news locally when it emerged that he is bred by a South African that has been passionate about the Thoroughbred breed for almost 60 years, namely Des Scott. 90

es owns Highdown Stud in partnership with Robin Scott, trading as Scott Bros in Nottingham Road for almost the past 50 years, and has produced many a Gr1 winner and an abundance of Graded Stakes winners, so many to date that the count has been lost. A magnificent farm that brought several concepts to the farming side of South African breeding, which included the barn-style stable almost 50 years ago, it is the residence of several stallions including Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade (half-sister is dual Gr1 winner by Galileo, Seventh Heaven) and the international Group winning producer, Mogok, as well as home to Gr1 Breeders Cup winner Miesqueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Approval. Des developed a powerful association with the hugely

successful racing stable of Terence Millard and saw amongst his many racing successes, the great Devon Air and Illustrador powering to Durban July victories in the red sleeves, black shirt and white Maltese cross colours of Des Scott. Apart from importing high quality mares from overseas that produced the likes of Ipi Tombe,Teal, La Fabulous and Politician, the farm in Nottingham Road always kept an association with Coolmore that saw mares regularly shipped between the African and European continent, with Des extending his interests to breeding in Australia. This resulted in a number of fillies imported back to South Africa and headed to their KZN breeding establishment. The farm has also had great success with purchasing horses from Argentina. Des Scott is no stranger to producing big race winners overseas and they include the third dam of top South African freshman sire, the German-bred Querari. Queen To Conquer had eight wins including the American Gr1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes and the Gr2 Ramona Handicap. Robin Scott had his own success breeding a Gr3 winner at Royal Ascot named Cutting Blade who went on to stud.

The juvenile colt is out of Galileo mare Starship, with Rivet being her seventh foal. Starship is out of a General Assembly / Green Dancer mare, and had three wins from her seven starts with one place. The Galileo mare was bred by Lester Piggot in partnership with Mr A Hirschfield. Rivet debuted at Ascot to finish a promising second under top jockey Ryan Moore, just a length and a quarter off the winner. A month later at York under Frankie Dettori, Rivet broke his maiden impressively, keeping on strongly to win by almost four lengths in a hands and heels ride. His next start was in the Gr2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in September, this time under Andrea Atzeni. Driven to the outside in the final furlong, he finished by a head to Thunder Snow, who would go on to win the Gr1 Criterium International at the end of October. Rivet lined up at Newmarket in the Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes, and after sitting comfortably just a length off the leader, he finished in fifth just three lengths off Churchill. Andrea Atzeni once again picked up the ride over a mile in the Gr1 Racing Post Trophy, two weeks after the Dewhurst Stakes.

lead of the pack and settling nicely to bowl along under Atzeni. Nearing the 400m mark Atzeni asked the question and Rivet went forward easily to extend himself without too much effort, making the victory look an easy one ahead of Yucatan by almost two lengths in a time of 1:37.08. Maureen Haggas, a daughter of part owner Lester Piggot commented after the Gr1 win: “My mother bought the grand dam a long time ago from Anthony Oppenheimer. The dam is a half-sister to Superstar Leo so it’s a great family we know really well and one that keeps giving. Everything we’ve bred from the mare has been a good one. We’ve sold them all bar this one and a mare that we’ve got in foal. It’s great we kept this one. “All of them out of the mare have had very good minds and he is the same. He’s very laid-back. He’s relaxed at home and never overdoes it. He’s taking his races well and still looks well. I think he’ll start at a mile next year and it’s up to William and the owners what they do.” In turn the colt provided Andrea Atzeni with his fourth victory in the Gr1 Racing Post Trophy, etching his name into British racing history after becoming the first jockey to win this specific Group One race in a row. The bay colt has won £210,481, and has earned himself a 92

well deserved rest before he is possibly aimed at the Classics, beginning with the 2000 Guineas in May next year, after relishing the mile in his last start. Being out of a Galileo mare his pedigree suggests he will find more and go further. Andrea Atzeni commented on Rivet’s performance after the race: “He really wanted it today. He gave me a great feel and two out I thought it would take a good one to get by him. “Mr Haggas said to let him enjoy himself. The horse is very genuine and stays well. He probably didn’t like the ground but obviously goes on it. He’s a lovely horse who will definitely go on next year. He’s still unfurnished and will be better next year.” Des and Robin Scott won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 at the provincial KZN Breeders Awards, recognising almost 50 years of breeding excellence which included the great Politician at the beginning, and more recently The Apache, and local Gr1 and Equus winners Wild One and Talktothestars. Congratulations to Des Scott on an extraordinary feat and being rewarded sixty years into a lifetime’s passion of horse racing and breeding, both locally and internationally. Rivet based on his juvenile year performances, will provide much joy and excitement to his owners when he returns in his three year old year. Watch this space.

ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN RACING SCENE

outh Africa has a rich history of producing generation after generation of great jockeys. Not only have these jockeys performed exceptionally well at home, but they have also done so on the international stage. Michael (Muis) Roberts was crowned as the British Flat racing Champion Jockey in 1992, while Basil Marcus won the Hong Kong Championship seven times, before Douglas Whyte, followed in his footsteps, winning the Championship a staggering 13 consecutive times. Internationally successful jockeys such as Felix Coetzee (Hong Kong), Glyn Schofield (Australia), Karis Teetan (Hong Kong) and Barend Voster (Singapore) are all products of the South African Jockey Academy. It should therefore come as no surprise that the latest two stars on the SA racing scene are the 2016 Champion Apprentice Callan Murray and runner-up Lyle Hewitson. Although he is only finishing his apprenticeship on the 9th of January, Murray is already a regular rider for the powerful

Earlier in the year he partnered Fursa (AUS) to victory in the Gr.2 SA Fillies Nursery and recently he steered the De Kock trained Smart Mart to victory in the Listed Kenilworth Cup. While Hewitson, who started at the Academy in January and was only allowed to start race riding in March, spends his time flying around the country, getting as much daily riding experience as he can fit into 24 hours. His victory aboard Captain Splendid in the East Cape Derby for the Snaith Racing Stable, led to a Vodacom Durban July call up, a mere four months after he started race riding! Hewitson recently rode the Ernst Oertel trained Ibn Harmany Al Zobair to victory at the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, where the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship formed part of the proceedings. Murray will soon be on his way to Australia for a three-month stint with David Hayes. Amazing opportunities for both at such a young age. Would it be difficult to stay grounded after such

an incredible start to their careers and after having seen what the international racing world offers, I wondered? “It really has been a great start to my career and I thoroughly enjoy the racing and success that has come with it. I’ve always tried to remain humble with all the success I’ve had. The person I was when I started is the reason for most of my success - so I’ve had no reason to change that”, explains Murray. Hewitson concurs: “I am fortunate to come from a great family who have taught me so much, and that coupled with attending a school like Kearsney College, being humble and grateful has been deeply instilled in my moral being. This is a tough game - as quickly as things can go well, they can go the other way too…” While Murray came to the sport at the suggestion of a family friend, Hewitson has racing and horses in his veins, as his father, Carl Hewitson is a former jockey. Was there ever a time when you wanted be something other than a jockey, I ask Hewitson. “As a young kid I always dreamt of being a professional soccer player (if being a jockey was not possible!). During my high school career, there was always a concern I would be too heavy to be a jockey, and so I pretty much decided that if I couldn’t do that, I would go on to study medicine and become a equine veterinarian. Gladly though it all worked out and I am currently living my dream!” I quiz Hewitson further on his goals for the season and his

Abu Dhabi adventure. Without hesitation he spells it out for me. “100+ winners, graded victories and the title of Champion SA apprentice.” With Murray about to complete his apprenticeship and Hewitson having two years left, I’d say those goals are pretty much a done deal! Hewitson continues: “SAJA was invited to send through an apprentice to take part in the apprentice carnival in Abu Dhabi & I was fortunate enough to be selected to go on SA’s behalf. In order to ride in the Champion Apprentice Finale race, apprentices had to have taken part in the other legs of the apprentice challenge throughout the year. Naturally I had not been to any of these and hence was not eligible to ride in that race. Mr. Oertel (an ex South African trainer) had however noticed that I would be there and took a chance and put me on at declarations - for which I am so grateful!” He does admit however that riding an Arabian is very different from riding a racehorse. “They seem to be much more temperamental and therefore it is paramount to be on their good side from the moment you jump on. Arabs are also slower than thoroughbreds on average, and take a strong ride, although not necessarily too much whip persuasion”, he explains. Hewitson describes his first international win as an incredible experience, especially as he was riding against some world-renown jockeys. International riding experience is key to becoming a great jockey. Riding styles differ all around the world and being able INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

to adapt to the different styles of riding and racing, makes a jockey a valuable commodity on the international circuit. Murray is also off on an international adventure, as he will be joining legendary trainer David Hayes for a three-month stint. Such opportunities are hard to come by and Murray is extremely lucky to be offered a chance to learn a new skill set so early on in his career, something he understands all too well. “Riding overseas will give me the opportunity to learn many lessons. I think one of the most important will be racing at unfamiliar courses with unfamiliar horses and jockeys. It will take me out of my comfort zone that I have at our local tracks and teach me to ride in different, more testing circumstances. I will be working for Mr. Hayes who is mainly based at Lindsay Park, but also has a City yard in Flemington. I will most probably rotate between the two for work purposes.” Murray’s greatest skill is probably his positive attitude and belief that he can win on any mount. It is this same belief that he can win on any horse, regardless of whether it is the favourite or a complete outsider that has helped a fellow ex-Academy jockey, Karis Teetan, consistently finish in the top five in Hong Kong, one of the hardest and most competitive racing jurisdictions in the world. “I try to be positive regardless of the horse’s likelihood to win - being positive helps me to make better decisions when I am needed to. I also go through my form as thoroughly as possible before the race so I know exactly what the horses around me are capable of and how I can beat them. Recently I’ve put heaps 96

of focus into the more technical aspect of races such as the pace and times that the races are run at and I’ve found it’s made a huge difference although I guess there is nothing quite like feel for a horse.” Both Murray and Hewitson state without hesitation that the place they would most like to ride is Hong Kong. “Definitely Hong Kong”, says Murray. “It has the most competitive racing in the world and only the best make it there. Going there would not only be a huge challenge but also a huge opportunity to prove myself on the world stage.” Hewitson agrees. “Hong Kong! It is the pinnacle of horseracing in the world and is extremely competitive and intense… Looking past the money aspect, it is the best of the best at all times in terms of the riders against which one competes.” And that door is already opening. With the success of South African jockeys in Hong Kong, it comes as no surprise that the Hong Kong Jockey Club has already taken note of both youngsters, requesting HKJC journalist Andrew Hawkins to interview both on a recent visit. Just for fun I ask which race they most want to win. With the July usually top of everybody’s list, it is rather refreshing to see that these two have a broader outlook. Murray lists the Queen’s Plate and the Melbourne Cup as the races he most wants to win, while Hewitson, having had a ride in the July, lists the July and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as the ones topping his list. Two young stars; dreaming big and with the world their oyster. It doesn’t get much better than that.

It’s no wonder followers of American racing have been smitten with her over and over again.Those qualities alone are enough to make her irresistible. But there is so much more to Beholder. The one-of-a-kind mare, who is a sure bet to win her fourth Eclipse Award championship after her scintillating win by whiskers over top younger female Songbird in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Park, has given new definition through her racetrack feats to the ideals of class and courage. “It’s kind of become a love affair, her and us,” said Beholder’s

trainer, Racing Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, as he prepared to part with the mare he clearly doted on, feeding her peppermints and stroking her softly. “And not just with me—with everybody.” Mandella’s long romance with Beholder, a six-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes bred by the Mitchell family’s Clarkland Farm of Kentucky and raced by Spendthrift Farm owner B. Wayne Hughes, likely will never end, as she is the type of horse who is simply unforgettable. But she left his barn in mid-November after giving him, her other connections and fans the greatest run of her life while delivering the third Breeders’ Cup win of her career, an unprecedented achievement on dirt. Only one other horse, Alain and Gerard Wertheimer’s brilliant mare Goldikova, has won three Breeders’ Cup races in the 33-year history of the event after prevailing in the Mile on turf each year from 2008 to 2010. From now on, Beholder’s only races will be in the paddocks at Spendthrift, near Lexington. With plans for her to be bred in 2017 to Uncle Mo, Hughes hopes she will transfer her energy into raising a new champion, although he candidly confided that it likely will be impossible for any other horse he breeds or owns to equal her standards.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve her,”said the 83-year-old Hughes. “I don’t think I’ll ever have another horse like this.” Echoing Hughes and Mandella about her accomplishments, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens was awed by the willpower Beholder displayed in her last and most remarkable race. “I’ve had some good feelings in racing, but this is tops,” Stevens, 53, declared after relating how he sent Beholder after pacesetting and previously unbeaten Songbird a bit earlier than he typically would have and reached even terms coming into the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile Breeders’ Cup Distaff. “I squeezed Beholder. She gave it to me and poked her head in front, and Songbird came back again. (Beholder) actually put Songbird away three different times through the stretch,” Stevens said. “(Beholder) laid her heart out there on the racetrack and gave me absolutely everything that was running through her veins.” Beholder’s battle with Songbird, and ultimate triumph in a duel that neither should have lost, is the epitome of everythingThoroughbred racing is supposed to be, and, as is typically the case, is the culmination of many years of dedication by everyone around her. Breeders Fred and Nancy Mitchell have been raising horses on the 400 acres of their Clarkland Farm for about 40 years, and the land has been in Nancy Mitchell’s family since the 1770s when it was granted from the Commonwealth of Virginia to an ancestor for service in the French and Indian War. In 2006, the Mitchells paid $100,000 for a then ten-year-old mare named Leslie’s Lady, who was by Tricky Crick and who had been a minor stakes winner during her racing career. Fortuitously, Leslie’s Lady’s foal of 2005 turned out to be Into Mischief, a juvenile Grade 1 winner in 2007 raced by Spendthrift and now a flagship stallion at the farm. The Mitchells bred Leslie’s Lady to Henny Hughes in 2009 and the resulting filly initially seemed to be rather plain and ordinary. But when she got to Keeneland for the September yearling sale, Fred Mitchell recalled that she showed herself in the ring like a very special individual, in a manner unlike any other filly he had ever seen, and Spendthrift paid $180,000 to add her to its stable, later bestowing on her the name Beholder. As Mandella looked back to 2012, when Beholder first entered his life, he remembered that the bay filly always struck him as one that, as hopeful horsemen like to say, could be anything. “We thought she was special right from the start,” he declared. Beholder finished fourth in her first start, one of only two times 100 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

in her entire career when she would not be first or second. The filly who defeated her, Executiveprivilege, would go on to be a multiple Grade 1 winner that season, but when they met in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, Beholder exacted revenge, running in front from gate to wire and earning championship honors as America’s best two-year-old filly. She won three more Grade 1 races as a three-year-old and finished second in the Kentucky Oaks after being fractious and getting bumped at the start.Then, back at Santa Anita for another Breeders’ Cup, Beholder romped again, drawing off by 4 ¼ lengths over a Distaff field that included older multiple champion Royal Delta, eventual champion Close Hatches and Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar. Her record that season earned her another Eclipse Award, this time as America’s best three-year-old filly. Beholder’s four-year-old season was abbreviated, although she did win another Grade 1 race, the Zenyatta Stakes, which she would capture three times during her career and finish second in another time. Beholder missed the 2014 Breeders’ Cup, but she returned to racing strong in 2015 and won all five of her starts, including three at the Grade 1 level topped by the Pacific Classic Stakes in which she trounced nine male rivals by a jaw-dropping 8 ¼ lengths in 1:59.77 for the 1 ¼ miles.

“I screamed louder than I’ve ever screamed,” Stevens said after that win. “It was out of jubilation.This mare, she makes me emotional.” Beholder, he said, ran away from the field, which included 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern, with no urging. “She did all that on her own around the turn. I did not move my hands. Her ears were pricked straight up like a morning workout,” Stevens said. “I took a little peek (behind) and there was nobody coming. I knew she hadn’t hit the afterburners yet, and I said, ‘This is going to be fun.’ ”

The dream match-up would never take place, as American Pharoah was retired after winning the Classic, but there was more to come from Beholder, who was crowned a champion for the third time when named outstanding older female of 2015. Beholder won her first two races of 2016 and then finished second three consecutive times, including two narrow losses to 2015 champion three-year-old filly Stellar Wind in the Clement L. Hirsch and Zenyatta Stakes. In this year’s running of the Pacific Classic, she beat all eight males in the field save one—California Chrome, who ran brilliantly to score by five lengths.

Even though Beholder had finished second in three consecutive races, the first time in her racing career she had gone on such a long non-winning streak, Mandella believed she was training so well that she would be formidable in her third appearance at a Breeders’ Cup. “Anybody that saw her train would have had the same confidence,” Mandella said.“It wasn’t hard to see. She was really at her best.” For Beholder’s last race, Mandella and Hughes decided against taking on California Chrome again in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which ultimately was won by three-year-old Arrogate.Yet the Distaff turned out to be just as tough a race, with Songbird fighting with every breath for at least a quarter of a mile. However, as it turned out, Beholder had saved her gamest performance for her last curtain call. For those who know her well, she had given another sign she was at her plucky best when she kicked Mandella in the hand while being saddled.

“Ninety percent of the time, she’s a sweetheart,” Mandella said. n January 28, if all plans reach fruition, the name Pegasus will become synonymous with the richest race ever run, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park, which will offer the horse that can soar the fastest over the 1 1/8 miles an unprecedented $7 million winning jackpot. In a first of its kind paradigm, the Pegasus World Cup also will provide 12 founding investors, who have each paid $1 million to cover the purse, a share of wagering and sponsorship revenue in addition to the prize money down to a minimum of $250,000. To maximize the event for the track, fans and bettors, organizers now are reaching out to recruit top runners from around the world. Jack Wolf, who was hired about a year ago by The Stronach Group’s founder Frank Stronach to serve as Pegasus World Cup chief executive officer, said in mid-November that Australia’s Horse of the Year Winx and some of Japan’s notable racehorses have been solicited for the race, although no commitments had yet been received. Coolmore, which owns a slot for the race, could opt to run frontrunning Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Highland Reel, Wolf said.The 106 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

By the end of November, California Chrome had banked over $14.45 million during his career, including the $1,020,000 he earned for finishing second to Arrogate in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.The owners of California Chrome,Taylor Made Farm and Perry Martin and partners, own a slot for the Pegasus World Cup, and if their horse prevails, he will become the first runner worldwide to cross the $20 million earnings mark. Trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome could run in a special prep race at his home base of Los Alamitos Race Course in December prior to going to Florida for the Pegasus World Cup, which is planned as his final race before he is retired to stud duty at Taylor Made Farm.

Surreal moments of the positive sort seem to come along all too seldom in life but on the morning of the 22nd of October standing on the beach just south of the Mtamvuna River, on South Africa’s eastern seaboard, watching the small group of riders cross the start line to begin their 350km Wild Coast odyssey was one such moment for me. I realized that the scene I was witnessing had played out in my head in one form or another so often during the 18 months of planning Race the Wild Coast and that what had been a concept for so long, was now a reality. In other words, a dream was coming true. Joe Dawson and I have been riding the Wild Coast regularly for the last 6 years but have never had the opportunity to ride it under the same conditions as the race riders. Joe and I had pondered endlessly about how long riders would take to complete each of the twelve stages of the race, coming up with a list of race scenarios from the four day “amazing winner finish” and “likely winner finish” down to the six day “amazing

straggler finish”. In the end we had given riders 5 days to complete the race with the dates chosen for favourable tides to facilitate crossing the many rivers along the coast. Riders had drawn their teams of 3 horses out of a hat at the start camp and spent just two days getting their heads around how to swim the Wild Coast rivers with their mounts. Each horse would cover roughly a third of the distance with riders changing horses at Port St Johns and Hole in the Wall on their way to the finish at Kei Mouth. The start wasn’t an explosive burst of thoroughbred sprint racing; riders needed to contain their horse’s energy for efforts later in the 104 kilometers of the first horse stage.The sedate start, with the riders and their mounts bunched together as if for comfort, belied the fast pace and fierce racing that would emerge over the next four days. The weather was cool. The forecast was for more of the same and there had been a lot of rain on the coast in the build up to the race; perfect conditions for a long distance horse race.

For the duration of the race it was my fortunate lot to be shuttled forward, along with Joe and the members of the film crew, by helicopter to monitor the 12 vet checks and critical river crossings. We had dubbed our little Roberson 44 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rockethorse Airâ&#x20AC;?, complete with a vinyl decal. My first flight, taking me to the Mntentu River crossing, took off soon after the start and when we picked up the riders a few kilometers down the beach it was clear that, given the weather conditions, the pace would be brisk with the field of 12 hailing from 7 countries, already split into two groups.

By the morning of day 3 the racing was getting serious with the leading riders leaving the overnight stop at Hluleka Nature Reserve before first light. A trio had managed to break away from the rest of the field establishing a small lead. Sarah Cuthbertson (Canada), Monde Kanyana (South Africa) and Sam Jones (Australia) had established themselves as the main contenders for line honours. Louise Crosbie (Australia) was struggling to hang onto the back of this leading group and her third horse was eventually vetted out at The Haven vet check 87km from the finish.

While I was being treated to the incredible views from the left front seat of the chopper, our ten volunteer vet, camp and horse change teams were leap frogging their way down the coast in 4x4 vehicles burdened with trailers laden with gear and camping equipment. Theirs was a different kind of adventure, maybe less frenetic than mine and definitely less so than the riders but an adventure no less.

On the penultimate stage with just 46km to go to the finish line at the mouth of the Kei River, Sarah left the Kob Inn vet check with a 33 minute lead over Monde and Sam who had decided to wait for the farrier to re-shoe their horses having each lost a front shoe. This following duo left the vet check with their horses reshod

and a grim determination to work together to catch Sarah and in my next hop forward in the chopper I witnessed the defining moment in the race when Monde and Sam caught a distraught Sarah; cameraman Danny Kodesh catching it all on camera hanging precariously from the door of our chopper just meters above the surf line. The trio remained a strung out group for the remaining kilometers with Sam pushing the pace, believing that her horse had the stamina to outrun the others. In the end it was a beach gallop for the line at the mouth of the Great Kei River with Monde taking the honours, Sam a close second and Sarah resigning herself to third after a spirited ride. This trio had ridden like the proverbial wind with all three of their horses passing all twelve vet checks and they had finished in the early afternoon of the fourth day. Some had said that it couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be done inside four days but Joe and my calculations had been correct thanks to the weather, the incredible horses and riders, and we had our amazing winner finish!

My eventful ride was over too. The scenes of the looming cliffs from my helicopter seat, of Hole in the Wall from the seaward side, of the hundreds of whales and literally thousands of dolphins, and of the lone hammerhead shark looking like a stunted white crucifix set against the dark blue of the sea will stay etched in my mind for some time.You too can see all these scenes when our film documenting Race the Wild Coast 2016 comes out early next year. A VISIT TO

ROAMER LODGE

s time continues its inexorable march, our history retreats ever further into the dusty annals of the ages and links with the greats of yesteryear grow ever more tenuous. Glimpses into the lives and times of racing’s heyday through the eyes of those who experienced them, are incredibly rare and I was therefore thrilled to recently meet Glendyr Pirija, youngest daughter of Syd Garrett, the fabled ‘Wizard of Roamer Lodge’. Syd is still regarded with awe by many of our modern training legends and counts among his many achievements a staggering 11 victories of what we know today as the Cape Met. Syd Garrett was one of two children, born to a family of Irish origin who ran a hotel in the Eastern Cape town of Uitenhage. Syd’s father (remembered by Glendyr as “Bompa”) used to drive a horse and cart and it seems that that was where Syd’s love for horses originated. With the sort of flagrant disregard for health, safety and children’s rights that would have modern day UNICEF up in arms, by the

time he was eight years old, young Syd was a successful race rider on the local amateur scene. When he was 12 years old, a family friend put in a recommendation to prominent conditioner Jim Russell and young Garrett transferred to the Cape to start his apprenticeship at Russell’s Kenilworth yard. Riding Success They forged a formidable partnership, being particularly successful during the Durban racing season and it was during the winter of 1919 that the young jockey was catapulted into the full glare of the national stage when he won the Durban July on a Russell horse named Goldwing. Goldwing was a good horse, but had suffered a lameness in the run-up to the July, which Russell treated with intensive sea water therapy. It worked, Garrett rode a faultless race and they won by a margin of 0.5 lengths. In the 1920 July, Garrett took the reins on Pamphlet, Russell’s 1918 July winner. Lugging a welterweight of 61kg, they cantered down to the start with a No 1 draw in their favour. However, their tiny

advantage evaporated when Pamphlet became unruly and was relegated to 17 by the starter. Nevertheless his jockey stayed calm under pressure and steered Pamphlet home to a confident win and a standing ovation. Training career When Jim Russell decided to go back to England, Garrett exchanged his riding papers for a trainer’s licence and took over the yard. It was not long before he made his presence felt in the conditioning ranks. He was notoriously uncompromising when it came to selecting clients, famously turning down the likes of Charles Engelhard and Abe Bloomberg (his lawyer and guardian to his daughter, Glendyr). Deeming their business relationship to pose a conflict of interest, he recommended Mr Bloomberg to Terrance Millard instead. Garrett did accept the likes of Countess Labia, Warwick Bryant, Piet Louw and Sir Abe Bailey, but even these were managed with a firm hand and only allowed into the yard during very strict visiting hours! However, the regime paid dividends and Garrett landed his first Met in 1926 with Sir W Nelson’s Grand Chase. But there was more to come, particularly after the yard relocated from Claremont to Milnerton, where the Wizard earned his nickname. The stables were named Roamer Lodge after a grey horse called Roamer. The large grey, who came with a string of unflattering descriptions, had been a bargain buy in England and sent to South Africa by Jim Russell. When he arrived, it is said that the stable lads fell about laughing at the “strange looking animal”

with “a head like a Clydesdale” and “a back like a billiard table”. His splayed feet and awkward gait earned him the nickname ‘Pikkewyn’. However, Roamer had the last laugh and proving that champions come in all shapes and sizes, clocked up successive Met victories in 1928 and 1929, earning his trainer the moniker “The Wizard of Roamer Lodge’’. After Roamer, he won the Met another 8 times. Sir Francis won in 1935, Moonlit in 1936, Asbestos in 1937, Moonlit again in 1938, there were back to back victories with Royal Chaplain in 1941 and 1942, Feltos won it in 1945 and Marion Island was his final winner in 1957. Other remarkable training feats were winning eight of the first 10 runnings of the Cape Derby and after his race riding double, Garrett would also win three July’s as a trainer (Full Dress in 1930, Sadri II in 1941 and the 3yo Left Wing in 1960). He remains the only person to have ridden, trained and owned July winners. Terrance Millard regards Syd Garrett as the best horseman he ever encountered. “What he did with 39 horses, today’s trainers can’t get close to with 200. I’ve never seen anyone with his precision in preparing for a race. And he was the classiest man.’’ Personal life Syd married Vera Carney, the daughter of a prominent local racing family and they had four children of which Glendyr is the youngest (born in 1949). On Thursday, 26th January in the Syd Garrett Bar at the Kenilworth Racecourse a special evening has been planned to commemorate Mr Syd Garrett’s contribution and achievements in racing. The room’s décor, wallpaper and photos are the perfect setting for such an evening depicting many of Mr. Garrett’s life and triumphs over the years spanning his career in racing. The evening will include a narrated outline of Mr. Garrett’s life in racing showing photographs and footage of his major successes. It will allow for a relaxed interaction with the Garrett and Laird family members, who have been so closely interlinked over the years.

It will enable the Press, family and friends in racing to celebrate being part of Racing’s History. In addition it will give the general public and racing fraternity the opportunity to understand why there is a room dedicated to the “Wizard of Roamer Lodge” as Syd Garrett was known. A Trainer, some think, who is still unequalled to this day for the results that he produced from a notoriously small string of race horses. Both the Garrett and Laird families would like to extend their most sincere thanks to Oscar Foulkes, The Racing Association, Thoroughpedia and RIAR (Racing It’s A Rush) for organizing this eagerly anticipated evening.

between her and her nearest sibling and the older children all at boarding school, Glendyr grew very close to her father. “We all rode, but I was the one who was most interested in the racing and I followed him everywhere. I used to go to the sand track with him during school holidays and watch the strings work. Sometimes I’d ride down on Fair Weather. He was quiet and was the only one I was allowed to ride.” Being an Irish Catholic, Syd Garrett was very keen on parties and family gatherings and being a bit of a ‘laatlammetjie’, the playmates Glendyr remembers most vividly from her childhood are her cousins. It’s quite an impressive family tree. Syd’s sister Elaine married Alec Laird (who remains the only person ever to win the July on a 2yo – Nobleman in 1911) and they produced a racing dynasty including Syd Laird (who married Marlene Thompson and produced Alec Laird), Adele (who married Ginger Drier and produced Dennis), Russell Laird (who married Marjorie and produced Charles Laird) and Mary (who married jockey Robbie Sivewright). Syd Garrett the Man Glendyr remembers a hard-working and highly disciplined man, who ran his yard like clockwork and was totally dedicated to his horses. “We grew our own lucern and carrots and he did his own feeding till the day he died. We had one of those chopping machines and used to chop up the lucern and mix up oats, bran and carrots. It was a daily process. He would go out with every string and he was a great record keeper. He used to jot down 116 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

notes after every mornings work, keeping a log of each horse, what they did, who they worked with, who rode them, etc.These were all transcribed and carefully recorded in each horse’s file in his office.” Glendyr remembers sitting in his office helping with the scratchings and was eventually taught to do the all-important filing. “After each string the horses would be groomed and fed and he used to walk around the yard and go into every box – not just lean over the door – and run his hands over every horse, morning and evening to check the legs, the grooming, etc.” He was very keen on pedigrees and taught Glendyr the breeding of each horse in the yard. She remembers proudly reciting the pedigrees back for several generations for visiting patrons. “Horses and racing weren’t a job to him, they were his way of life. Everything revolved around the horses and they always came first.” Garrett was a strictly disciplined man, with his staff, his family and himself. Glendyr remembers that he smoked Mills in tins. He allowed himself 2 whiskies in his office every day before supper. On a Sunday, he’d allow himself one extra at lunchtime. “He was strict with us and we were never spoilt. I think I got one new dress a year. He was also very strict when it came to our ponies and during the school holidays we had to look after them ourselves – no help from the grooms! But I adored him and followed him around everywhere.” Glendyr was still very young when Marion Island won the Met in 1957, but remembers the horses very well. “He didn’t have a lot of horses – 30 to 40

at the most, but we had some really good ones. There is just something about a good horse. They know they’re special. We weren’t allowed to go to the races in those days of course, but I’d sometimes ride down to the track on my pony and watch the races over the fence.” Garrett was also a devoted Catholic. “He insisted on us all attending mass on Sunday mornings. There were so many of us that we had to travel in two cars. Everyone had to dress up in their Sunday best and before we set off my dad would make everyone hold out their hands and inspect their fingernails. He was very involved with the church and friendly with the priests, who used to come by every Friday for a whisky and my father would give them tips!” “I never heard the words ‘certainty’ or ‘sure thing’. Never.The most my father would ever say was ‘you can have a bet’. But when he did, you could be pretty confident about putting your money down. “He wasn’t what one could call a huge gambler, but he liked to have a judicious bet from time to time.The local punters took to following him around and eventually Syd had to send my mother to place his bets. But they quickly cottoned on and started following her too, so Vera eventually delegated betting duties to her sisters as a diversionary tactic.” Glendyr also remembers the winter seasons when her father was in Durban and his assistant (nephew Syd Laird) was in charge

of the Cape Town yard. It was the days of the old telephone exchanges and of course the operators were all too keen to listen in when Garrett rang home to check on the yard.They eventually devised an elaborate code to confuse their eavesdroppers, to the extent that Glendyr remembers Laird exclaiming down the phone in frustration “I have no idea what you’re talking about!” The Irish love of entertaining was also strong.“There was no going to restaurants in those days. My father loved a good party and we often entertained at home. He played the piano and loved to sing all the old Irish classics like Danny Boy and Irish Eyes. They were wonderful times.” Vera died quite suddenly when Glendyr was just 3 years old. Syd remarried in 1959 and moved to Durban with his new wife. He kept his horses at Newmarket and handed Roamer Lodge over to nephew Syd, but Glendyr says “he was never the same. He lasted about 2 years and then died of a stroke in 1961. He was 59 years old.”When I ask what she feels were the keys to his success, she replies with conviction. “I remember him saying ‘Be assertive, but also humble’. I think this was why he was so successful with his patrons. Everyone was treated the same, be they Lords or Ladies or ordinary people. “It was the same for fellow trainers – he treated the good and successful ones the same as everyone else and was always ready to share his advice with fellow trainers. Other than that, he just had that rare way with horses and they responded. He absolutely loved his horses and they loved him.” INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
