Liesl King reports on the 238th running of the Investec Derby on page 10, where Padraig Beggy steered the colt, Wings of Eagles to an upset 40-1 win. Wings of Eagles displayed a blistering turn of foot to pass from mid field with metres to spare. As we build up to one of South Africa’s most prestigious events,The Vodacom Durban July, Liesl looks at the likely contenders on page 20, which should make for an exciting running of this R4.25 Million Grade 1 Stakes. t is indeed a race like no other. Run at Epsom Downs on a course that most sensible horsemen would avoid if at all possible. It is the quintessential English course with undulations that are not for the faint hearted. A downhill run around a sharp left hand bend at Tattenham corner, followed by a steep downhill and then a short climb to the finish. Oh and while you are thundering down the home straight at nearly 60kmph, the camber throws you towards the inside rail so violently that more than one horse has nearly toppled over in the past. It all started with a Surrey mansion called The Oaks. In 1776 Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician, passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion, The Oaks to the Earl of Derby. He also casually suggested that the Lord Derby should introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half, emulating his old comrade Anthony St Leger, founder of

the St Leger at Doncaster. Three years later the first Oaks was run on the Downs above Epsom. Of course the boys couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be left out in the cold and at an Oaks celebratory dinner Burgoyne suggested that perhaps a similar race for colts would be a good idea. Legend has it that the naming rights went the way of Lord Derby in a coin toss. The other participant in the coin toss was one of his guests, Sir Charles Bunbury, a Jockey Club steward whose Diomed would wreak some revenge for the loss by winning the inaugural running of the race in 1780. The Derby grew in importance and stature, quickly becoming the most important race in Britain. Even the British Parliament did not sit on Derby Day for many a year and the race was copied the world over. To date there are over 300 Derbies around the world. Today the Derby is Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s richest horse race and still the most prestigious of the five Classic races. It is open to three-year-old colts and fillies and is still run on the Downs above Epsom.

The 238th edition of the Derby has certainly not been without controversy, with the entry of the 52 rated maiden filly Diore Lia, to be ridden by a one time winning apprentice.The BHA interceded, forcing a change to a more experienced rider, but it all came to naught as Diore Lia was found to be lame on the morning of the race. Aidan O’Brien, trainer for the mighty Coolmore, seemed to have the race sewn up with six of the 18 entries hailing from his stable, while World Champion jockey Ryan Moore had chosen the ride aboard the favourite, a Galileo colt named Cliffs Of Moher. Trainer John Gosden also had a strong hand with five runners including the second favourite, a Frankel colt called Cracksman, while Godolphin fielded three entries. And yet the race seemed wide open. Unlike previous years where a clear frontrunner had emerged after the Derby trial races, this year yielded none. Godolphin’s Best Solution won the Lingfield Derby Trial, while Cracksman accounted for

the Investec Derby Trial. Douglas MacArthur, part owned by South African owner Markus Jooste, won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and Kahlidi and Permian accounted for the Feilden Stakes and Newmarket Stakes respectively. Cliffs of Moher, another horse that Jooste is a partner in, comfortably won the Dee Stakes, while Venice Beach stepped up in the Chester Vase. As the field rounded Tattenham Corner and headed down the home straight, it all looked picture perfect. Douglas MacArthur under a driving ride by Colm O’Donoghue was setting a blistering pace up front with Cliffs Of Moher and Moore and Frankie Dettori on Cracksman sitting handy just off the pace. Wings Of Eagles and Padraig Beggy racing at the tail end of the field was the last of the O’Brien runners with only two horses behind him. With 200m to go, as Douglas MacArthur started fading, Moore drove Cliffs Of Moher into the lead, with Cracksman challenging up his inside. The expected duel had materialised and racegoers settled down

to enjoy a thrilling contest as two champion jockeys battled out the finish.

hile the concept of a log determining who the final 18 runners and two reserves will be is rather foreign for most internationals, it does work rather well in ensuring that the field is comprised of the best possible runners. Each nominated horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position on the Vodacom Durban July log is determined by its current performance, its merit rating and its Graded race performance. Added to that are a number of qualifying races which grant automatic entry to the race. So with the final Vodacom Durban July log issued on the 6th of June, the only chances left to impress the panel are the Gr1 Gold Challenge, the Gr3 Cup Trial and the Gr3 Jubilee Handicap. The Gold Challenge being a qualifying race, while the other two are considered as pointers towards possible

inclusion. So lets have a look at the potential runners. As always it comes down to a battle between the top threeyear-olds in the country and the older horses. The Vodacom Durban July is a conditions race with a set top weight of 60kgs and with a capped weight of 57kgs for 3yr old colts and geldings and 56kgs for their female counterparts. Against some of the older horses that top weight however can change the game completely and there is always the chance that some youngsters may be withdrawn after the weights are announced. In the three-year-old camp it is likely to be a South North battle with Edict Of Nantes topping the log, while Al Sahem sits in second. The Brett Crawford trained Edict Of Nantes is the only horse in the field to have won two qualifying races, being the G1 Investec Cape Derby and the G1 Daily News 2000. Edict Of Nantes is owned by Mayfair Speculators and hails from Klawervlei Stud’s nursery. Progressing steadily through the ranks with placings in the G3 Cape Classic and the G2 Selangor Cup, Edict Of Nantes impressed with his 1,75 lengths victory in the G1 Investec Cape Derby with Frankie Dettori in the saddle.While that victory may have been considered ‘lucky’ there was nothing lucky about his half-length victory in the G1 Daily News 2000 at level weights. After racing off the pace for most of the race, Anton Marcus made his move approaching the final turn. Edict Of Nantes gliding around runners as if they were standing still and once in the home straight, Marcus pressed the button, sending the colt into the lead. Al Sahem under a driving ride by Anthony Delpech chased hard up the middle of the track, but the colt could make no inroads into Edict Of Nantes’s lead. It was Edict Of Nantes’s fifth victory from 12 starts. Thus making him the standout three-year-old entry

and earning him the number one spot on the log. Al Sahem, trained by Champion Trainer Sean Tarry, also earned an automatic entry when winning the G1 SA Derby by 1,75 lengths. Owned and bred by Sheik Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum’s Al Adiyaat, Al Sahem is by Champion sire Silvano out of the AL Mufti mare Alderry. Al Sahem has recorded three victories and three seconds from three starts. He would have to improve on his Daily News run in order to beat Edict Of Nantes but Tarry is not Champion Trainer for nothing and that finishing order may well be reversed come July day. Safe Harbour, also trained by Tarry, is currently in 15th position on the log. The talented filly has not won a Graded race yet, but her seconds in the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas, the G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes and the Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, together with a third in the G1 Woolavington 2000 shows just how classy this daughter of Elusive Fort is.

Of the older horses the standouts are last year’s flying second, Marinaresco, Master Sabina, It’s My Turn and the fillies Nightingale and Bela-Bela. Marinaresco followed his July run with victory in the G1 Champions Cup, but a winless Cape Season had trainer Candice Bass-Robinson scratching her head. She seems to have solved the puzzle as Marinaresco flew up for victory in the G2 Drill Hall stakes at his last start. In 18th on the log, Nightingale, also trained by Bass-Robinson and a winner of the G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes in January, found herself in a rather precarious position. However a good half-length second behind Just Sensual in the G2 Tibouchina Stakes, should have secured the talented four-year-old filly a starting berth and a Silvano daughter can never be ignored. Justin Snaith saddles the quartet of It’s My Turn, Krambambuli, Bela-Bela and the recently acquired Master Sabina. Master Sabina is an automatic qualifier due to his victory in the G1 Sansui Summer Cup. A fifth in the G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge and a recent stable change may not count in his favour. It’s My Turn has been winless since his runaway victory in the 2016 Investec Cape Derby, but scored a third in the G2 Glorious Goodwood Peninsula Handicap and a 26

solid third in the G2 Bettingworld 1900. It’s My Turn is very capable of winning the Vodacom Durban July and could fly in under the radar, like The Conglomerate did in 2016. The beautiful grey filly Bela-Bela is safe in the 7th spot on the log and with a cracking run in the 2016 Vodacom Durban July, where she finished in 6th less than three lengths behind the winner, she certainly deserves a spot in the starting line up. She has however had a quiet year by her standards. A sterling victory in the G1 Paddock Stakes was followed by a 7th in the Sun Met. Snaith then gave her a break before a respectable comeback run in the SA Fillies Sprint. The latest runner to leapfrog into the top twenty is the Duncan Howells trained Ten Gun Salute. The Australian bred son of Henrythenavigator surprised all with a 1,5 length victory in the G2 Bettingworld 1900. With the Bettingworld 1900 an automatic qualifier, Ten Gun Salute is guaranteed a starting berth and will be flying the flag for KwaZulu-Natal. The Snaith trained Elusive Silva sits in 20th on the final log, but his victory in the G3 Cup Trial gives him “preferential consideration”, which should see the Silvano gelding comfortably making the final field, potentially giving Snaith five runners.

AMERICAN CLASSICS ROUND UP Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s master trainers wove more of their magic during the opening of the Classic season in the United States, with the current triumvirate of dominant conditioners giving their rivals a schooling lesson while they gathered up all the gold.

n a year in which most competitors were lightly raced and 2016 juvenile champion Classic Empire was dogged by niggling ailments, Todd Pletcher stepped forward and seized the Kentucky Derby trophy with lightly raced and sometimes tempestuous Always Dreaming. But two weeks later, Chad Brown trumped that feat by upsetting the Preakness Stakes with a non-stakes winner, Cloud Computing, who was making only his fourth career start. When top-level American racing is the subject, Hall of Famer Bob Baffert is almost always in the frame. After injury sidelined his star three-year-old colt Mastery, who looked to be the potential division leader, Baffert snuck into Churchill Downs with Abel Tasman, a filly he had been training for only about two months, and snared the Kentucky Oaks. While the racing was exciting even though the horses had to slog through mud on sticky, rain-pelted surfaces for all three events, the results left a muddled picture of the American three-year-old class of both genders.

For the second consecutive year following American Pharoah’s historic Triple Crown sweep in 2015, there will be three different winners of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Both Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing were removed from consideration for the 1 ½-mile Belmont, known as “The Test of a Champion,” leaving the third jewel in the Crown up for grabs and available for plunder by Japanese raider Epicharis, the plucky runner-up in the UAE Derby at Meydan. As for America’ three-year-old fillies, Abel Tasman is the new leader of the pack. While the American sophomores suffer from a lack of seasoning and were judged by their connections as unfit to contest all three Triple Crown races (or run in all three associated filly events), they did ignite lightning flashes of brilliance. In large measure, that had to be chalked up to the wily skills of Pletcher, Brown and Baffert. Prior to January 25, Always Dreaming was just a colt who did

not win in a pair of starts as a juvenile, although he did place in both those races.Transferred from trainer Dominick Schettino to Pletcher, the son of first crop of Kentucky Derby runner-up Bodemeister was evaluated by the seven-time Eclipse Awardwinning conditioner and then rested and restarted. Remarkably, Always Dreaming marched through a maiden victory on January 25 at Tampa Bay Downs and an allowance win on March 4 at Gulfstream Park. Pletcher and the owners, including New York boyhood friends Vincent Viola and Anthony Bonomo, decided to roll the dice with only one chance to earn the necessary points to enter the Kentucky Derby, and the colt came through with an impressive five-length score in the $1 million Florida Derby. When Always Dreaming arrived in Kentucky, however, he morphed from a tractable, progressive youngster into something of a fire-breathing bronco who tried to run away with regular exercise rider Adele Bellinger.This new drama, which was severe enough to threaten his ability to run his best, proved how essential Pletcher’s keen horsemanship and high-caliber staff can be to the career of a top runner. “I think he really came in (to Churchill Downs) and he knew it was game time and he was ready to go. So, our challenge was keeping him on the ground for ten days (before the Derby),” Pletcher said. 36

Pletcher added draw reins to the colt’s equipment and substituted Nick Bush—who has traveled with and helped prepare many of his best runners for major events such as the Dubai World Cup—for Bellinger. In addition, he restricted Always Dreaming’s training to the quiet hour before sunrise to try to keep public attention and distractions to a minimum. Always Dreaming tried jumping around a little with Bush, but soon settled into his training, galloping with his neck arched and his head down as he relented to the rider and the draw reins. “Nick Bush did a heck of a job; Adele did a heck of a job galloping him all winter,” Pletcher said. “But I can tell you, I was nervous watching him gallop. Because he was so ready to go, I just felt like if he ever built up ahead of steam, he was going to go (too far, too fast). “You worry about all those things.But the most important thing is to bring the best horse to the Derby, and I think that’s what we were able to do.” On the afternoon of May 6, all the preparation and planning culminated with Always Dreaming striding confidently into the starting gate. bizarre incidents in Kentucky Derby history occurred. Godolphin’s European Group 1 and UAE Derby winner Thunder Snow nearly dislodged jockey Christophe Soumillon before launching into a wild bucking spree.

the modus operandi of his late mentor, Bobby Frankel, Brown kept a low profile, but he believed in his horse despite his lack of experience. “I think he deserves a shot,” Brown said before the race. “Obviously, the Derby winner is really impressive and he’s going to be hard to beat. But we’re just looking to take our chance and hopefully he gets a good trip and it works out for him and he likes the surface at Pimlico.

Dreaming was the favorite, with Classic Empire a highly regarded second choice and Cloud Computing at 13.40 to 1. Nothing went as expected. The unorthodox campaign plotted for Cloud Computing is actually fairly standard for the 38-year-old Brown, who won his first Eclipse Award as America’s outstanding trainer for the 2016 season. Brown is never in a hurry and his ability to get the best out of a horse has been a key part of his success in building up his stable to include powerhouse owners such as Juddmonte Farms and Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum,as well as a cavalry of their blue-blooded steeds.

“As we try to plan his second half of the year, we just don’t feel like running in a mile and a half race just three weeks after his strong performance in the Preakness is the right thing to do for him if we want to have a horse for the rest of the year,” declared Brown, whose stable depth yielded another Belmont contender in multiple stakes winner Twisted Tom.

But there was nothing standard about the Preakness victory, a first for Brown at the Classic level with his very first starter in the Preakness—and perhaps a harbinger of what might come in the future. It also will clearly terminate what has been a persistent chatter that Brown is best at training grass runners. “I don’t take it for granted. I know I’m young, but you have to have an incredible team of people that share a common goal (to achieve Classic success),” Brown said. “And everyone has to have the same drive as me. And I feel I have that with my team—an outstanding jockey to work with like Javier and supportive owners that are patient.This horse worked hard and needed a lot of care and patience. It all came together. I feel like it was a lot of work and well deserved by everybody.”

Pletcher also opted to skip the Belmont with Always Dreaming, who faded to eighth in the Preakness after his early efforts, preferring to regroup and aim for the Travers Stakes, the race that last year launched Arrogate to superstardom. “Sometimes you just don’t know” how much the Derby takes out of a colt, even one that seemed to be doing as well as Always Dreaming was before the Preakness, he said. Meanwhile, Classic Empire was to get another chance to return to the top of the class in the Belmont. And while Baffert did not have any colts to challenge in the Belmont, he was due to be back on the scene again with Abel Tasman, who was aimed at the $700,000 Acorn Stakes for three-year-old fillies on Belmont day. The big filly by Quality Road was like a special gift from heaven to the trainer after the loss of Mastery, particularly considering the way she came to his stable. Co-owner China Horse Club took Abel Tasman away from previous trainer Simon Callaghan when she raced earlier this year in co-owner Clearsky Farms’ silks rather than the club’s colors; following that decision, Baffert was offered the filly, who last year won the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes, and he immediately accepted.

“She’s a beautiful filly to train. She shipped beautifully and we knew we had a chance. We’ve never had a bad day with her. She is just so classy,” he added. Following the first Classic events, the feats of the masters were reflected in the seasonal statistics to date. Pletcher continues to lead all North American trainers with a historic record of nearly $340 million in purse earnings while also topping the 2017 list with over $11.2 million this season. Baffert remains the undisputed contemporary king of Classic races for colts with 12 victories to date inTriple Crown events and he owns anotherthree wins in the Kentucky Oaks. HUGH BOWMAN JUST KEEPS GETTING LUCKY

There is a new name at the top of the Longines Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Jockey standings and no, it is not Joao Moreira. The Longines Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Jockey Award is a joint initiative of Longines and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, and is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group/Grade 1 international races as established each year. The scoring incorporates races from 1 December of the previous year until 30 November of the current year. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.

Lucky Bubbles winnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circle

he Award was established in 2014, and Ryan Moore was its inaugural winner. Since then Longines Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Jockey award has mostly been passed back and forth between Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori, but Moreira, nicknamed the Magician, has been widely expected to be one of its future recipients. Yet currently a quiet, well-spoken, thirty-six year old Australian from Dunedoo, New South Wales called Hugh Bowman, occupies the number one berth by a wide margin. Bowman may have 68 Group 1 victories behind his name, but his rise to stardom has not been along a path of roses. 2002 saw a then 21-year-old Bowman suspended by Racing NSW stewards after he tested positive for cocaine. Bowman, who managed to have the original penalty of nine months reduced to six after going for counselling, was at a crossroads.

He questioned his ability to compete with the top Sydney jockeys and his self belief was at an all time low.The enforced six-month break gave him time to think and thankfully he decided he to give it a go. Two years later he landed his first Group 1 victory aboard Defier in the Doomben Cup. It was only the start. Many Group 1’s followed yet Bowman is best known for his association with the superstar mare, Winx. Bowman partnered the Chris Waller trained Winx in a staggering 12 Group 1 victories so far, spanning two years and including two Cox Plates. Yet it wasn’t Winx alone that catapulted Bowman to the top of the standings, as Bowman has also been plying his trade internationally. In Hong Kong he has partnered Werther to great success for trainer John Moore, with victories in the G1 BMW Hong Kong Derby, the G1 Audemars Piguet QE II Cup, the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup and the G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup. Therefore it came as no surprise to see Bowman carded as

the rider of Lucky Bubbles for trainer Francis Lui. It was an interesting choice of rider though, as fellow Australian Brett Prebble and the gelding had been inseparable. Prebble had ridden Lucky Bubbles in all of his 16 starts and in his most of his barrier trials, including a solid second in the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December 2017 behind Aerovelocity. Yet four straight defeats when starting as favourite meant that Lui decided to “try something new”. That “something new” was Bowman. Jumping from barrier three, Bowman settled the five-year-old gelding by Sebring in fourth on the rails as Peniaphobia and Neil Callan led the field into the main straight, followed by Dashing Fellow and Sam Clipperton and Not Listenin’tome and Tommy Berry. It was a risky move and turning into the home straight Bowman found himself boxed in with 400m left to go. Up front Callan and Peniaphobia led the cavalry charge for the line with Not Listenin’tome and Berry in close attendance. Fortune favours the brave though, and as Dashing Fellow weakened, a narrow gap opened and in a blink of an

eye Bowman and Lucky Bubbles swept through. In a perfectly timed move and as if he had all the time in the world, Bowman delivered Lucky Bubbles in the lead on the line, to win by a neck from a flying Mr Stunning and Joao Moreira, with Not Listenin’tome and Berry a neck back in third. “I was a little concerned about where I would go at the top of the straight because there was no clear passage,” a laconic Bowman explain. “I did not have many options other than to wait a while. With a little bit of patience, a run presented itself and we all know the tenacity and toughness this horse has. He proved it today and he made luck for himself.” Bowman clearly delighted with the victory, returned grinning from ear to ear, while Lucky Bubbles got a kiss on the nose for a job well done. Lu, who had previously won two Group 2 races with Lucky Bubbles, celebrated his well deserved first Group 1 victory. “I still can’t believe it, this is so exciting,” an emotional Lui said post-race. “I have always known he had the talent, but it is

great to see him get that win, he deserved that. Hopefully it is not the last one for him! It has been a tough year, he’s tried so hard but he’s been a little bit unlucky, he struck trouble in a couple of his runs and so he should have won one or two more.” Lui confirmed that Lucky Bubbles would now have a rest ahead of the next season and that for the time being the gelding would not be travelling internationally. Bowman meanwhile headed back home where he is eager to get re-acquainted with Winx for a Spring campaign that is sure to include a third attempt at Cox Plate glory. Will he chase the World’s Best Jockey title seeing as he is currently in the lead? Bowman however is pragmatic. “It helps having Winx in something like that, but it is not even at the halfway stage yet,” Bowman said. “It’s not something I’m even thinking about that much.” It may not be, but with rides on the likes of Werther, Lucky Bubbles and the mighty Winx looming in the rest of the year, Bowman may just find himself on the podium as the Longines World’s Best Jockey come December. And if he does, it will be richly deserved!

Life is a funny old thing. As a journalist I get to meet and interview a wide spectrum of people and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all rather formal. Introductions are made, appointments are booked and interviews are done. Yet most of the extraordinary people that I have met along the way were all purely by chance and Radovan Duschek falls firmly into that category.

bitterly cold night, an outdoor party on a mountaintop in the Alps, in the middle of winter is not quite where you expect to be meeting the subject of your next story. Winding my way through the packed crowd in search of any form of heat, with a glass of glühwein warming up my hand and my insides, I hear a smattering of English amongst the predominantly French and German crowd. A tall jovial man is holding court around a heater. A conversation in English and a heater; I cannot resist and quickly introduce myself. In the space of the next hour I meet a most delightful man, his wife Simone, discover that he is the artist behind the beautiful ‘crystal horses’ on the official White Turf poster and procure an invitation to his exhibition in the VIP marquee at the White Turf meeting. Duschek was born in Trautenau in the former Czech Republic. At the age of seven his talent for painting was recognized and encouraged. Duschek explains: “I was promoted from my seventh year onwards. Communism also had its positive aspects.They drew attention to talents in the school and supported promotion. I went to an evening academy, where I went through a hard and very strict school of painting. In high-profile national and international competitions, I was able to prove with great success that I was on the right track.”The Czech Republic however was becoming increasingly dangerous and in 1974 Duschek and his family were forced to flee. “In 1974, at the age of 10, my parents were forced to leave former Czech Republic. My father was persecuted politically and threatened with prison because he did not want to join the communist party. In the summer of 1974, we planned - as every year - a camping holiday in former Yugoslavia. My parents had made escape plans with friends from the West and kept everything very secret, since every smallest slip in the worst case would have led to prison or worse. Many things were done in in secret by my parents in order to leave our ‘old’ life behind. I had no idea. “From the camp in Yugoslav Makarska, we drove by car to Köper and got into a PS-strong motorboat, which had been organized from Germany for our flight. I was told: ‘All the suitcases, all the toys, everything that could point to an escape must remain back in Yugoslavia, ...You can’t take it with you! It must look like a family trip!’ The people helping us had done their homework, they studied the lunchtime of the border guards to Italy exactly, and so we rushed across the sea in the direction of Italy towards Trieste. It was still a kind of adventure and fun for me. I did not realise that I would probably never see my friends and the rest of the family ever again. We raced across the Adriatic Sea and as if in a thriller, suddenly one of the two engines died. We had to land at a small island and quickly try to mend the boat.Time was running out, but then the engine started again. In Trieste, we were hidden out of sight right away.The motorboat was pulled out of the water, loaded on a trailer and we crawled under the tarpaulin covering the boat. If discovered in Italy, we would be sent straight back to the Czech Republic. “Everything had to happen very quickly, as the news had broken that 54

there were people on their way to Trieste. By nightfall we had reached the border of Italy and Austria.The mood was tense, as the border guards went around the car and the boat and inspected the occupants. We held our breath. My mother held my mouth shut. No one noticed us and thank God we were able to continue our flight through Austria towards the German border. In Bad Reichenhall we asked for asylum and were finally accepted into Germany and safe.” Starting a new life in Germany wasn’t easy and Duschek, ever determined to become an artist, had to continue his painting studies by himself. “From this point on, I gained my further knowledge and skills from self-study. In Germany, as a teenager, I worked with a number of graphic and fashion designers. In 2000, I started with professional painting.” Home these days is Constance at the edge of Lake Constance in Germany, where he has set up his studio. “My studio is in my home. I need that rare initial spark that drives me to create something.You cannot plan to paint, you have to do it when all the emotional circumstances are right”, he explains. “In my gallery, private viewings and exhibitions take place several times a year. I exhibit and also store most of my paintings here.The paintings, however, are created in my familiar surroundings at home.” While all of his paintings at the White Turf were of horses, Duschek also finds great pleasure in painting cities and

landscapes, especially New York, musicians and even sailing yachts. “My photos are mostly the basis for my paintings. Since I meet my motifs in everyday life, I can never say in the long term where my journey will go. New York, people, animals and ‘movement’ have been very inspiring for me. In my last project, I drew my inspiration from the horses running at the Swiss White Turf meeting in St. Moritz. Horses really fascinate me. They are magnificent creatures, so powerful and so sensitive at the same time.To paint them in the moment of body tension, in a fusion of man and animal is a great challenge.There are many critics being very well experienced with the anatomy of horses.They quickly show you your limitations.” The next morning I meet up with Duschek at the White Turf eager to see some of his paintings. I should have known that even an invite from the artist himself would not be enough to allow me access to the inner sanctum of the VIP marquee! Duschek however is ever resourceful and a few phone calls later and with a personal escort by the Head of Public areas and Safety, I am in. The paintings gracing the walls are incredible. Large canvasses splashed with vibrant colours, depict a variety of racing scenes, the horses frozen in motion. His White Turf ‘crystal’ horses taking pride of place. I am entranced. All too soon however my escort appears and I am ushered out of the hallowed VIP tent. I am curious though as to how Duschek came about designing the event poster.

Duschek takes up the story. “Hans-Peter Danuser, long-time curator of St. Moritz, invited a small circle of people to a reading session to the well-known Waldhotel am See.There, I met with the CEO of White Turf, Silvio Staub and after some discussions I was invited to host an exhibition at this year’s event. I was also asked to create the image of the White Turf for the promotional poster. After some briefings, Staub and I came up with the image of the blue and black crystal horses, which now adorns almost every corner of the wintry St. Moritz. “Horse racing on the frozen lake is unique, as is the scenery that surrounds this event. At sunshine, everything seems perfect.The impression is unbelievable. When you capture a moment of the race, you can see how the ice flies, how the muscles of the racehorse are tense and how the light flows between the objects. All these emotions drive me to perpetuate the moment.” A chance meeting on a mountaintop led to an incredible story, a kaleidoscope of beautiful images and a life well lived. A White Turf poster with its crystal horses graces my wall and I cannot wait to meet up with Duschek next year to see what new inspirational moments he has captured on canvas.

If we ever got a horse from Australia, that would attract the eyeballs from Australia to be looking at our race and I think would drive up interest. All that will help handle drastically.

“Just looking at past history, when Japan bet on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, I think they bet $41 million on that race and the rest of the world bet like $38 million. Of course, the Arc is a prestigious race and it is well known in Japan and Stronach officials are hoping the incredible number of dollars that probably helped,” Rogers said. “But I think that when on the finish line will lure not only the best American runners, Japan bet on the Breeders’ Cup (Filly & Mare Turf in 2016, but horses from Japan and perhaps Hong Kong and Australia when Japanese mare Nuovo Record competed), they bet $7 million on that one race. as well.

It’s hard to predict what that number would be, but I think it could be substantial.” Of course, the quality of the runners also will spur interest and betting. The inaugural running of the Pegasus—which featured the world’s highest rated horse, Arrogate, running away with the $7 million first-place prize and the second highest-rated horse, California Chrome, finishing unplaced after incurring a slight knee injury—provided instant gravitas. Already, insider scuttlebutt has it that Arrogate’s trainer, Bob Baffert, is eager to run in the race again in 2018. Arrogate, the now four-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song owned by Juddmonte Farms, could possibly follow the blueprint set by California Chrome, who went immediately to stud following this year’s Pegasus. The huge Pegasus purse could indeed be something of a game-changer when it comes to stud plans. With so much

prizemoney, the race could keep horses running after the autumn championship events while serving as the middle link between the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and the now $10 million Dubai World Cup. Arrogate proved a horse could win all three of those events—and he banked an astounding $16.3 million in the process. That amount of money in just a trio of races was more than any other horse outside of Japan had earned in the history of racing. Yet while there is much enthusiasm for the Pegasus purse and genuine passion among sportsmen about seeing the best race against the best for big money, Stronach officials are finding it more difficult than might be imagined to gather up the needed investors for the second year of the innovative project. As with the first edition of the Pegasus, plans call for a group

of 12 investors to each contribute $1 million toward funding of the purse with each then receiving one spot in the race’s starting gate. Since all owners of Pegasus slots but Juddmonte, which bought Coolmore’s stake, and Stronach, whose homebred Shaman Ghost finished second in the initial race, lost significant funds in 2017, the stakeholders and Stronach officials were deep in intense discussions about how money would be divided in 2018.

The entire distribution of the $16 million purse has not been made clear, however, as Stronach officials and original stakeholders continued to discuss terms through May. Another aspect of the infusion of the additional $4 million is that Stronach officials would not allow as much potential revenue from sources such as sponsorships and betting to be returned to investors, as outlined in the original Pegasus plans, according to Rogers and others involved in the discussions.

Rogers said the additional $4 million was added to the purse with the idea that stakeholders would be guaranteed at least a $650,000 return for the $1 million investment, no matter where their horse finished in the race.

Rogers said he could not discuss financial details and confirmed that stakeholders had been required by Stronach officials to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevented them from publicly revealing what has been proposed prior to any plan being finalized.

Stakeholders are allowed to either enter their own horses or lease horses for the race, or even sell their starting gate slots to others in a unique stock market scenario.

“My thinking on it is caveat emptor—let the buyer beware. I was aware of what I was getting into so I have no qualms,” said 2017 investor James McIngvale, whose Argentine import

Eragon was eased while crossing the finish line last, of the original investor arrangements. However, McIngvale said in May, around the time in 2016 when plans were finalized for the inaugural running, that he was uncertain whether he would get involved again.The same was true for Jack Wolf and his Starlight Racing partners. Wolf, who was hired to serve as Pegasus chief executive officer for the first running of the race, confirmed that Stronach officials decided to eliminate his role and take on the duties themselves for 2018. Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Farm and original Pegasus investor California Chrome LLC said that group also was dubious about investing again. “It really just depends on which way they take the race. If they do it so there is more sharing of (revenue) as it grows, it would be a possibility,” Taylor said. “If they take it the direction to where it’s more about just wanting to race in the race and having a good horse to put in the race…it’s

not something we would probably do.” Despite the reluctance of many to put up a $1 million bet on a Pegasus starting slot for next year, Rogers said Stronach Group officials were unconcerned as potential new investors lined up for a chance to be involved. “We actually have people already who have told us that they’re interested. We’ve had people who say ‘if you have some that drop out, we’re ready, willing and able,’ ” Rogers said. The initial stakeholders were given until July 1 to make a commitment to reinvest for 2018. Afterward, new investors were to be considered. Whoever is involved, Rogers said the long-term goal for the Pegasus remains the same. “We want it to become a race on the international calendar so that it can attract the best horses in the world and grow the handle and grow the interest,” he said.

SUNDAY SILENCE, B U R N I N G B R I G H T LY When American breeders spurned 1989 Horse of the Year Sunday Silence nearly three decades ago, causing him to be sold to Japan, they had no way of knowing that one day his genetic influence would be so strong that it would reach around the globe.

he bay colt by Western Winter, born on the 12th of August 2010 at Lammerskraal Stud in Ceres, was the ninth offspring of his dam the Pas De Quoi mare Nacarat. With a grand dam named Tawny Red and sporting a coat with a wonderful reddish sheen, often referred to as a bright bay or blood bay, naming the beautiful colt Red Ray was pretty much a given. Evidence of the ongoing legacy of the nearly black stallion, who became a legend in Japan while his progeny amassed more than any other sire’s offspring in history with over $710 million earnings, arose with striking examples in the United States and Germany this spring. Yoshida, a colt named for the family that purchased Sunday Silence from the ownership group including Arthur Hancock Jr. that raced him to Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic victories, romped in his stakes debut in front a huge Preakness day crowd at Pimlico Race Course on May 20. Earlier that same month, Warring States prevailed after

a stretch battle in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic at Munich and seemed on his way to the Group 1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg on July 2. The racecourse triumphs of the two colts, both purchased at the elite Japan Racing Horse Association select sale held annually in July at the Northern Horse Park on the island of Hokkaido, are a major landmark in the ascendancy of Japanese breeding. Yoshida, a son of Sunday Silence’s champion son Heart’s Cry, is a sterling example of what Japanese breeders have been able to accomplish by breeding their bold acquisitions of top racemares from around the world to sons and grandsons of Sunday Silence, who died at age 16 in August 2002 after suffering from laminitis and a leg infection. Produced by American Grade 1-winning sprinter Hilda’s Passion, by Canadian Frontier, Yoshida was bred by Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm and offered as a yearling at the 2015 JRHA sale. The rugged bay drew the attention of a number of American buyers who attended that year’s sale while also submitting bids for the stallion Empire Maker, who at the time was standing at the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association’s Shizunai Stallion Station. With agent John McCormack, a veteran of bloodstock dealings in Japan, doing the bidding, the Heart’s Cry colt was acquired

by WinStar Farm for ¥94 million (about $758,065), the highest price paid for a yearling by the sire of the world’s highest rated racehorse of 2014, Dubai Duty Free winner Just a Way. “He was really a special horse,” WinStar President Elliott Walden said after buying the colt. “I became enamored with him at the barn. He looks like he has a tremendous amount of class and bone.” Walden had been intrigued for several years with the idea of bringing some of the blood of Sunday Silence back to the U.S. Heart’s Cry, who won the 2006 Dubai Sheema Classic in a romp over the likes of top European runners Ouija Board and AlexanderGoldrun, has been one of the legendary sire’s best sons at stud. “Now we’re doing it,” Walden declared at the time with the clear hope that the Heart’s Cry-Hilda’s Passion colt could become a stallion prospect.

The style and power of Yoshida could not be denied by anyone who saw him that day. “He’s a serious horse—serious,” Walden declared after the race of the colt co-owned with China Horse Club and SF Racing Group. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott indicated that the Grade 1, $1.2 million Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park on July 8 could be next for Yoshida.

Making only his third career start after a runner-up effort in his debut and then a powerful, front-running win on the turf at Keeneland, Yoshida demonstrated that he could be something special in the $100,000 James W. Murphy Stakes at Pimlico.

“That was very impressive,” Mott said of the Murphy score. “Joel said he was very responsive—whenever he needed him, he could put him wherever he wanted. I thought it was a very professional race….He relaxed early and finished with a big burst. He had plenty of courage; he had his ears pricked and he was doing it the right way.”

In his Bavarian Classic, he proved tough and unyielding in a duel down the stretch with the Nathaniel colt Enjoy Vijay. Sheikh Fahad paid ¥46 million ($450,981) for Warring States as a foal at the 2014 JRHA sale, where the sheikh ranked as leading buyer after spending more than $8.5 million in total for nine individuals, all with Sunday Silence blood. By Dubai World Cup winner and Japanese champion Victoire Pisa, Warring States claims dual Japanese Classic winner Neo Universe, by Sunday Silence, as his grandsire and he is a half brother to multiple Japanese group stakes winner Hakusan Moon. Warring States is trained by Andreas Wohler, who already has saddled four Deutsches Derby winners including 2016 victor Isfahan as well as 2014 Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist. At this stage, both Yoshida and Warring States seem poised to

add more glory to the name of Sunday Silence. And there will be no shortage of Japanese-breds waiting for their opportunity to spread the bloodlines even further. The JRHA has catalogued 247 yearlings and 228 foals for this year’s sale, which typically features Sunday Silence blood in around 90% of the offerings. Sunday Silence’s Triple Crown winning son Deep Impact, who has risen to succeed his sire as the world’s annual leader by progeny earnings, has 24 yearlings, including a full sister to Dubai Turf winner Real Steel, a colt out of English Group 1 winner Listen and a colt out of European champion Fleeting Spirit, in the catalog. His 15 JRHA foals include a full sister to twotime Japanese Horse of the Year Gentildonna and produce of American Grade 1 winners Contested, Sky Diva and Zazu. There will be many more yearlings and foals by Victoire Pisa, Heart’s Cry, Deep Impact’s full brother and successful sire Black Tide, Sunday Silence’s Triple Crown-winning grandson Orfevre, Deep Impact’s Japanese Derby-winning son Kizuna and others. The legend of Sunday Silence lives on, a black flame burning brightly.

BUSH HILL WELCOME B R I T I S H S P R I N T S TA R T O S T U D Bush Hill Stud have welcomed an exciting addition to their stallion barn this coming season, a handsome chestnut Mustajeeb (GB). He is a multiple Group winning son of five-time Gr1 winner and Gr1 producing sire of sires, Nayef.

ustajeeb is the fastest horse to come out of the world champion family of Allegretta, the sire-producing outstanding family of Galileo and Sea The Stars. Retired to stud in 2016, Mustajeeb has his first crop of foals on the ground in England and is currently covering his second season before his flight out to South Africa. Warwick Render of Bush Hill Stud currently stands several young stallions by leading sires locally and internationally, and the son of Nayef owned by Shadwell Stud, makes for a very exciting prospect for South African breeding. This notion was reinforced when upon announcement that Mustajeeb was to stand in South Africa, one of the leading stud farms in the country - resident in the province of Western Cape - immediately made contact to secure places for their mares in Mustajeeb’s 2017 book. His sire Nayef is a half-brother to greats Nashwan and Unfuwain,

and carries a lifetime career winners/runners strike rate of 61%. A racehorse of the highest calibre, Nayef won five Gr1’s including the Dubai Champion Stakes, Juddmonte International Stakes at York, Prince Of Wales Stakes at Ascot and the Sheema Classic in Dubai, accumulating stakes of £2,359,840. The son of Gulch was subsequently crowned the Top rated three year old in England in 2001, as well as the Top rated older horse in the United Arab Emirates in 2002. Mustajeeb showed exceptional speed during a consistent racing career which saw him win from age two to four, including breaking a track record in the fastest ever time in the Gr3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot – Bill Oppenheim of TDN is quoted as saying when Mustajeeb retired to stud, “Sometimes it must be the toughest Gr3 [Jersey Stakes] in the world - which he duly won as 9-2 favourite.They have a genuine ‘sleeper’ in Mustajeeb!” He ran the race faster than his own great-grandfather Indian Ridge, as well as the likes of Diktat and Gr1 Nunthorpe winner, Mozart. Trained by Dermot Weld, who described the chestnut colt as: “Very powerful, very good looking and correct, a joy to train. A tough, geniune racehorse of the highest class,” Mustajeeb won his maiden by two and half a lengths under jockey Pat Smullen, who rode Mustajeeb in all of his efforts. His next start saw him entered for the “stallion making” Gr2 Futurity, racing green to finish second behind War Command in good going at the Curragh over 1400m. The run brought him on and the colt found his feet; his next race in the Gr3 Amethyst Stakes in Leopardstown saw him win by two and half lengths clear, leading clear from the 150m mark and staying on strongly over the 1600m. Mustajeeb had shown plenty of talent and his next outing was in the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas, where he tracked the leaders Kingman and Shifting Power to challenge and finish third in the high quality race over 1600m. He was far from disgraced with the likes of Great White Eagle, Johann Strauss and Fountain Of Youth in his wake. Just under a month later, Dermot sent him to run in the Gr3 Jersey Stakes which would be an unforgettable experience. In good going on the turf at Ascot, he tracked the leaders and took to the front from the final furlong, sprinting the fastest time ever to be run in the quality Gr3 in breeze-splitting time of 1m 24.54s. The runner-up Muwaary was fourth on his last start in the Poule d’Essai Des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), whilst the third horse 86

Giovanni Boldini had been a consistent performer and finished fourth in the Gr2 UAE Derby at Meydan. Dermot commented after spectacular performance in June that Mustajeeb “is a very genuine colt, tough and honest, and a very progressive horse. He won his Group race against older horses at Leopardstown over a mile and he came home very well - he was the only three-year-old in the field. “This colt has a future. He is very adaptable and will go on any ground but he appreciates fast ground.We thought that he would win today and he did it well.” His regular rider Pat Smullen commented after the Jersey Stakes victory: “I couldn’t believe how well it worked for us, there wasn’t a great deal of pace early and I just wanted to get him on the bridle to travel. He stayed all the way to the line, he had strong form coming into the race and showed his good speed.” September saw the grandson of Elusive Quality step onto the track in the Gr1 Boomerang Mile, in good to firm going. Mustajeeb finished second just a mere half a length off the winner Bow Creek after being held up at the start. In the process, three-time Gr1 winner Lord Gordon Byron finished one and a half-lengths off into third place. Mustajeeb defeated the multiple winning son of Byron again in the Gr2 Greenlands Stakes in good to yielding going, beating Maarek by

a length. Mustajeeb travelled mid division and moved up to fifth place two furlongs out, catching up to second with a furlong to go and powering to on to win.

Mustajeeb’s broodmare sire is Elusive Quality, a 16.2 hand son of the great Gone West that lies 10th on the broodmare sire list of leading Northern Hemisphere stallions. Elusive Quality produces 61% winners to runners and standing at Darley.

A RITE OF SPRING, A RACING TRADITION The Iroquois Steeplechase has been a southern celebration for 76 years.

ention Tennessee to most people and what normally comes to mind is country music. Music City, U.S.A. It is also a state known for its universities, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Andrew Jackson, and Elvis. While the state’s neighbor Kentucky to the north is known more for equine racing and breeding, there are more horses per capita in Shelby County,Tennessee than any other county in the United States. And the state has its own annual rite of spring one week after the Kentucky Derby when the Iroquois Steeplechase is run on the second Saturday of May. On this one Saturday during the past 76 years, Percy Warner Park has been the heart of the steeplechase world and holds a deserving place in the history of American horse racing.

A Racing Heritage

For the greater part of the nineteenth century, Tennessee, not Kentucky, was considered the center of horse breeding and horse racing in the United States. As a matter of fact, 25 years before he became president of the United States, Andrew Jackson was known as one of the leading horse breeders and racers in the state. He purchased an interest

in one of the state’s most important racetracks and after becoming president, took three of his horses to Washington and raced his horses in the nation’s capital. In 1839, former Confederate Civil War general and wealthy Tennessee cotton planter William Hicks Jackson inherited Nashville’s Belle Meade Plantation at the age of thirtyone. The plantation’s horse farm eventually expanded to an estimated 5,400 acres and became one of the world’s renowned horse breeding operations. Belle Meade’s top stallion Iroquois became the first American-bred horse to win the English Epsom Derby in 1881 and eventually became the namesake for the Iroquois Steeplechase. And in 1872, Belle Meade acquired a stallion named Bonnie Scotland. The horse’s pedigree resulted in an honor roll of horse racing royalty including Man O’War, Seabiscuit, California Chrome and Triple Crown winners War Admiral, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed. The horse racing industry in Tennessee suffered a major blow in 1905 when the state legislature passed legislation that prohibited gambling on horse races. Two years later, lawmakers confirmed that ruling with passage of “An act to prohibit the keeping of any place for the purpose of encouraging, promoting, aiding, or assisting in any betting or

wagering upon any kind of a horse race.”This anti-betting law ended horse racing in the state for many years. The Iroquois Steeplechase was borne from the tradition of pasture races in middle Tennessee during the 1930’s. In 1941, a group of businessmen and fox hunters looked to make these races more official. The result of their efforts has led to more than seven decades of an annual celebration of horse, hats, and hounds.

Nashville’s Rite of Spring

They begin arriving at Percy Warner Park before 8am on Saturday morning. The day’s seven-race card is still more than five hours away but the competition almost feels secondary to the pageantry and the day-long party. Nearly 25,000 come from Tennessee and across the country each year wearing their fashionable Sunday best to attend the premier spring race meet in American steeple chasing. “The Iroquois Steeplechase is more than just a horse race,” says Executive Director Libby Cheek, “It is a Nashville tradition that ties so many people from our community together.” A good portion of that community congregates on the park’s infield. Tailgating is an individually-organized science here and thousands show up early to set up their tents. Even the infield has its strategic destinations and is divided into six

regions known as Centerfield, Midfield, The Stretch, Topside, The Turn and The Meadows. Walk from tent to tent and you’ll encounter the finest in southern hospitality, live music, delightful cuisine and there is plenty of Tennessee Whiskey and Honey Jack Juleps among various other libations.“We love coming out and hanging out with friends and enjoying the races,” says Prentice Richardson from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, “And there is no place like the infield where you get to mingle with the crowd and have a great time.” The Iroquois Steeplechase has run each year since 1941 with the exception of one year of hiatus during World War II. The race has been run under threatening weather conditions and even endured the Nashville Flood of 2010. Remember, we are talking about a wide-open city park here. Tents can come in handy from time to time. And large VIP groups revel in tented luxury in the high-dollar Hunt Club, Paddock Club, Hospitality Village, Tents in the Turn and the Skybox Suites. Highly desired box seats overlook the grass track and have been passed down by families through the generations. Some families have retained their seats from the race’s earliest years in the 1940’s.

A Day at the Races

for the party, it is the thrill of steeplechase racing and the thoroughbreds that helps keeps fans at the park for the full day and coming back year after year. In the steeplechase world, these Nashville races have the largest purses of the spring season. The day is comprised of seven races for horses aged 4 and up over the three-mile turf track for $525,000 in purses, bonuses and awards. The Iroquois Steeplechase is run by a nonprofit organization and has raised more than $10 million since 1981 for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at nearby Vanderbilt University.

To commemorate 75 years in 2016, the Iroquois Steeplechase created what is known as the TVV-Iroquois Cheltenham Challenge - a transatlantic rivalry that includes two of the world’s biggest steeplechase races, the Iroquois Steeplechase in Nashville, and the Cheltenham Festival in England. The partnership offers a $500,000 bonus challenge to any horse that can win both the Ryannair Group 1 World Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and the Calvin Houghland Iroquois in May (or vice versa, within a 12-month period).
