It’s no party out here, and on Kentucky Derby day, it was miserably wet, with record rain and mud so deep I almost went to my knees near a drain when I was leaving the turf course. But look at what the horses and riders dealt with in the Derby. Justify’s talent and Mike Smith’s shrewdness are all the more impressive when considering these conditions. 10 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

arly on the afternoon of February 18, a chestnut colt with a white blaze was led over to the Santa Anita Park paddock to prepare for his racing debut. He was handsome, well-bred and had all the right connections.

Although he broke a step slowly from the starting gate and was last early, the colt sped to the front, flying through early fractions of :21.80 and :44.37 before storming home to capture the seven-furlong maiden event by 9 ½ lengths. The colt demonstrated everything trainer Bob Baffert had hoped he would in that race, which marked the first step of what would become an unprecedented bid for history.

than three months with a colt who had never competed at two—drew barbed criticism. After all, no horse that had not run as a juvenile had won the Derby since 1882, when the gelding Apollo succeeded in a field of 14. Subsequent failures had long been deemed victims of the “curse of Apollo.” The subject was so prickly that a veteran journalist penned a diatribe to Baffert. “Forget about it,” he wrote of the Derby plans. “The Kentucky Derby is the toughest race in America and it chews up and spits out horses—experienced horses who have raced six, seven, eight times, who have not been rushed into the race and who started as two-year-olds. With any horse coming into the race 11 weeks after his debut... you’re taking a huge chance that they’ll never again be the same. Is it worth the risk?”

“It’s not too late,” Baffert said at the time, revealing that he had the Kentucky Derby in mind for the colt. “I’ve got a plan.” Baffert, whose instinctive horsemanship skills are otherworldly, did not hesitate in taking that risk and the rest is now the His bold ambition—to aim at the Run for the Roses in less stuff of legend.

Not only did the chestnut colt with the apropos name of Justify make the Kentucky Derby, he powered through five unforgettable weeks in Kentucky, Maryland and New York to become an unbeaten Triple Crown winner, the first horse ever to sweep the American classic races who had not been tested at two. “He just came on and broke every curse there was,” Baffert declared after watching Justify romp home, unchallenged from gate to wire, to conclude the triple accomplishment in the Belmont Stakes on June 9. “The great ones just find another gear.”

Seattle Slew, had earned the crown while unbeaten. Justify also established himself as the first horse ever to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes on sloppy tracks; the surfaces he raced on were deeper than sodden quagmires after persistent rains in both Louisville and Baltimore. He also was the first Triple Crown winner to defeat more than seven rivals in the 1 ½-mile Belmont Stakes, turning back nine competitors with ease in what was only his sixth career start.

So much history was rewritten in the waning light of the overcast early evening at Belmont Park that the vast old grandstand, erected for racing’s glory days, shook with the roars of the 90,000 people reported to be in attendance to witness Justify’s ascent into sporting immortality.

With the climactic victory, Baffert, 65, reached never before scaled heights as the all-time leading trainer by wins in Triple Crown races with 15, and he also became only the second trainer to saddle two Triple Crown winners, with Justify following 2015 champion American Pharoah.

Not only did the colt do something no other with his lack of experience had ever been able to do in sweeping the Triple Crown, he joined a select group of only a dozen others that have won all three classic races. Only one other of that group,

Jockey Mike Smith also left his mark. At age 52, Smith became the oldest rider to steer home a Triple Crown winner, and, while moved to tears, he captured the essence of Justify perhaps better than anyone.

Coming back in the Preakness two weeks later is never easy and, in fact, can be the undoing of some colts who can’t tolerate the quick turnaround and the Triple Crown’s middle jewel test at 1 3/16 miles. But it was in Baltimore, over a virtual bog of a track that Pimlico Race Course workers had tried to improve by adding extra dirt to particularly problematic areas, that Justify truly showed his heart. Challenged immediately at the start by Good Magic and jockey Jose Ortiz, who broke to his inside, Justify never got a breather. while going past the finish line for the first time, and Smith reported he jumped twice more during the race, although neither rider nor horse lost balance or momentum. Ortiz and Good Magic kept pushing Justify wide and there even was some physical contact, but Justify continued resolutely on, emerging from a thick fog that blanketed Pimlico with a slight lead in the stretch. Although challengers Bravazo and Tenfold tried to rally, Smith got Justify home by a half-length and appeared to wrap up on him late, saving as much energy as he could for the Belmont. Knowing his horse, Baffert couldn’t help exulting a bit after watching the Preakness unfold before a crowd of over 134,000.

Remarkably, Justify held his weight throughout the rigors of the Triple Crown. By the time he and his team had made it to Belmont Park, he seemed more eager than ever, pulling on exercise rider Humberto Gomez as he galloped for the first around the 1 ½-mile dirt oval known as “Big Sandy.” “He loves it,” Gomez said, breaking into a delighted grin while he and Justify walked off the track. With that knowledge—and the recollection of how American Pharoah had concluded his Triple Crown by going directly to the front and daring challengers to come and get him—Smith sent Justify away from his rail position in the Belmont starting gate like he would a Quarter Horse. Flicking his whip and smooching, Smith sparked Justify to leap into a huge, ground-gobbling stride, and the colt instantly separated himself from most of the field.

“He’s a big, heavy, strong horse, and races don’t knock him out. He will eat everything tonight. That’s just the way he is,” Baffert said. “I would love to put a Western saddle on him Another Baffert trainee, Gary and Mary West’s stakes-placed and ride him in the Rose Parade, if they would let me. He’s Restoring Hope, chased from second early with Bravazo in third. But by the time the field reached the stretch, it was just so beautiful.”

European invader Gronkowski who launched the strongest challenge to Justify, rallying up the rail after breaking last and dawdling far back in the initial furlongs. Smith, however, had measured the horse he had under him and the distance they had to travel to perfect precision. Coolly they cruised across the finish line and into the Triple Crown record books as winners by 1 ¾ lengths over Gronkowski. Smith gave thanks and credit to Baffert and to Justify. “Bob has helped me achieve so many of my goals, but today he made my dreams come true. He talks about how great his crew is and then he puts an old man up there to sit still and let a good horse be a good horse,” he said.

Less than 120 days later, he once again touched Triple Crown fame and glory, forever solidifying his own legacy as the only trainer other than James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons, who saddled Gallant Fox and Omaha in the 1930s, to hone the talents of two classic ultimate classic competitors. “I’m grateful to have a horse like this, to have the opportunity to be here. To make history like this is an incredible feeling,” Baffert said, his voice choked with emotion, before acknowledging a sense of spirituality he also noted in 2015 as he addressed his survival from a heart attack and the death of his parents, Ellie and Bill, several years earlier. “I think of my parents, the good friends I’ve lost. I know they’re up there (in heaven). I really believe in that, that they’re helping me out, giving me that little push,” Baffert said before turning his attention to Justify.

Baffert, who always dreamed of winning the Triple Crown before American Pharoah accomplished the feat 37 years after the last winner, Affirmed, was overcome with emotion but not really surprised. tanding near the fabled Churchill Downs dirt racetrack, over which so many champions have trod for decades, Bob Baffert shook his head and lowered his voice.

“I still can’t believe we did it,” he declared. But then he gazed up at Justify, who just a week earlier had completed an unprecedented run through history to become America’s 13th Triple Crown winner while the only one never to have raced as a juvenile. The towering chestnut colt stood in the winner’s circle, his head held high, calmly surveying the more than 20,000 people who had gathered in part to pay him homage, and his trainer was reminded of just what a special athlete he had honed to arrive at this moment. “I have never seen a horse that is just so tough,” Baffert praised. “He is just a magnificent animal.” True to that description, Justify endured sweltering heat and humidity on June 16, the day he was honored during a special ceremony that featured him parading down the track and in the paddock at Churchill Downs, and never flinched. He arched his neck, pricked his ears and reacted to the cheers of fans with a kingly air.

“It’s great that Bob is good enough to share him with the public,” said Elliott Walden, chief executive officer of Justify’s co-owner, WinStar Farm. “The thing about a horse that wins the Triple Crown is that he’s not our horse anymore—he’s America’s horse.” Led by key Baffert team members including assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes, exercise rider Humberto Gomez and groom Eduardo Luna, Justify strode out of the trainer’s Barn 33 on the Churchill backstretch around 6:30 in the evening. He repeated the steps he took to the paddock to be saddled for his Kentucky Derby victory on May 5, a performance that is even more incredible in hindsight as it marked only the second start in a stakes for Justify. As he was being paraded, the waning sun gilded Justify’s coppery mane and tail. A white cooler emblazoned with his name and the most elusive title in racing, “Triple Crown Winner,” was fastened around the colt’s girth and chest as

he arrived in the paddock after walking virtually the entire length of the massive Churchill grandstand. Joining a group of eight maiden runners who were preparing for the third race on the track’s program that featured the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap, Justify stood in stall 14 until the field left for the track. Barnes and Luna then led him around the paddock oval so that fans who had staked out positions at the rail, lining up for more than an hour seeking a glimpse of the champion despite the heat, could try to snap a photo. Some called out congratulations to Baffert, who waved and took the shank from Luna and led Justify for one lap. When the maiden race had concluded, the Justify team headed for the winner’s circle adjacent to the track, where more celebrations ensued, although the colt went back to the stable with Barnes, Luna and Gomez before trophies

were handed out and interviews conducted. Jockey Mike Smith, who rode in the maiden race while Justify was being paraded, quickly switched into WinStar silks and joined the ceremony. “It feels so good, I just want to do it all over again,” exclaimed Smith while reflecting on the Triple Crown. At 52, Smith is the oldest jockey to complete the classic sweep and is a renowned athlete in his own right; a member of the American Racing Hall of Fame for nearly 15 years, Smith leads all jockeys by Breeders’ Cup race wins. Yet while Smith has ridden many champions, including Horses of the Year Holy Bull, Azeri and Zenyatta as well as Dubai World Cup winner Arrogate, he has never been astride anything quite like Justify. He has referred to the colt as an “old soul” sent from the heavens above. Smith can look forward to riding Justify more this season

as Baffert and Walden confirmed that current plans call for the colt to continue to be raced. Potential targets include the Haskell Invitational Stakes, the Travers Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Any plans naturally will be contingent on Justify’s health and condition, Baffert emphasized, indicating that the colt likely would return to timed workouts at some point in July. “We’ll let the horse tell us,” he said of when Justify might next race. Remarkably, Justify emerged from the Triple Crown carrying as much weight as when he began the 112-day journey that took him from a maiden victory at Santa Anita Park all the way to his Belmont win. “He’s ready to go again,” Baffert said during the Churchill celebrations. “He looks good. He’s had a lot thrown at him, and he’s handled it really well.”

The first Saturday in July is fast approaching. The last Vodacom Durban July Log has been published, entries are now closed and the weights have been announced. All that is left is the announcement of the final field on the 26th of June. Forty horses remain after recent withdrawals and some anxious days await their trainers as they wait to hear whether they stars are running. Except for one trainer that is. Cape trainer Justin Snaith could have five, possibly even six

entries in this year’s R4.25 million Grade 1 race.

third of the field belonging to one trainer seems impossible, yet Snaith has a habit of making the impossible possible. Snaith etched his name in the record books with his extraordinary eight victories on Met day 2016, and he followed that up this year by training the first three-year-old filly to win the G1 Sun Met in over one hundred years. He also leads the Trainers’ Championship with a staggering R21.2 million in earnings. Hence possibly training nearly a third of the July field should not come as a surprise. Currently his likely runners to make the final field are the favourite African Night Sky, promising 3yr old Do It Again, Elusive Silva, one of last year’s favourites, supplementary entry Made To Conquer and the filly Star Express. African Night Sky, a 4yr old Dynasty gelding and the winner of the 2017 Cape Winter Series, has shortened to 18/10 in the ante-post betting for the Vodacom Durban July. Having his first prep run at Greyville in May, African Night Sky flew up late in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1600m, before storming home with consummate ease in the G3 Cup Trial over 1800m.

The gelding has mostly been competed over 1600 to 1800m, but he won the final leg of the Winter Series, the Highlands Stud Winter Derby over 2400m by 5.5 lengths leaving no doubt that he easily gets the distance. Favourites however have a habit of getting beaten in the Vodacom Durban July. Igugu being the last favourite to win, but if anybody can beat the favourite jinx, it is Justin Snaith. African Night Sky will carry 57kgs and no jockey has been announced yet. And if the favourite can’t quite get there, don’t worry Snaith trains the second favourite as well. Do it Again, a 3yr old gelding by Twice Over (GB), who has been allocated 54kgs, is currently second favourite in the ante-post betting at 11/2. After winning his first two starts Do it Again did not feature in the G1 Cape Guineas, but bounced back with a second in the G1 Investec Cape Derby. Snaith thought enough of his charge to send him to Durban for the season and Do It Again justified that faith with a convincing victory it the G2 Daisy Guineas at Greyville, his first time racing right-handed. A solid fourth, only 1.25 lengths behind the winner in the G1 Daily News, saw Do It Again rocket up the betting. Last year’s Cup Trial winner and one of the favourites for the 2017 July, Elusive Silva, sadly injured a tendon during the Vodacom Durban July public gallops, forcing his withdrawal and it was thought that his career was over. later after mammoth rehabilitation effort, Snaith has worked miracles and the Silvano gelding returned to racing in January. A promising 5th in the Listed Sledgehammer Stakes showed Elusive Silva was definitely on the comeback trail. Victory in the G2 World Sports Betting 1900 from a wide draw on the 19th of May, saw him firmly in 7th on the last log. With six career victories, four at Graded level and earnings of just under a million Rand, Elusive Silva, carrying 56,5kg fully deserves his place in the final line up. And donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be surprised if the bright red chestnut is in the mix at the finish. Jeff Lloyd hopes to follow in the footsteps of Muis Roberts. The July was the one race that Roberts never won, despite several attempts. Returning for one final attempt in 1997 he was offered the ride on Super Quality by David Ferraris. Super Quality was definitely not expected to be in the lead at the business end of the race, but nobody had told him that. Under a masterful ride by Roberts, Super Quality strode to victory with not a dry eye in the house. At last Roberts was a July winner. Another who has won just about everything except the July is champion jockey Jeff Lloyd.

After a superb career in South Africa, Lloyd departed for Australia where he has enjoyed great success in Queensland, overtaking the record set by Chris Munce for the most winners in Queensland, during the 2016-2017 season. A veteran of the jockeysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bench at 56, Lloyd has announced that he will retire at the end of this season, but not before he also has one final attempt at winning the July. And his ride? The 4yr old Dynasty gelding Made To Conquer, who has been allocated a light weight of 53kgs. The recent Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner, Made To Conquer was a final supplementary entry and both Lloyd and Snaith are very confident that his name will be one of the final 18. Will it be a fairy tale ending? Only time will tell. Star Express, a 5yr old Silvano mare trained by Snaith, occupied the 11th position on the last July log. While the mare finished 5th in the G2 Gold Bracelet over 2000m at Greyville a year ago, she has recently been successfully campaigned over 1400m to 1600m. Therefore it is more than likely that Star Express will start in the other G1 race on July day, the Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes over 1600m.

As usual the July panel determines the final field of the Vodacom Durban July, but the race conditions do in fact specify that the winners of ten Grade 1 races automatically qualify. Interestingly this year only one of those winners is still among the entries and that is the G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge winner Coral Fever, who will carry top weight of 60kgs. Trained by Robbie Sage, Coral Fever is a 5yr old Judpot (USA) gelding. Late November saw him finish third behind Liege in the G1 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup, followed by a third in the G3 London News Stakes behind Cascapedia (IRE). Solid second in the G2 Hawaii Stakes and victory in the G2 Colorado King Stakes followed a no show in his first lefthanded race in the G1 Sun Met. Coral Fever finished off his July prep with his G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge victory over 2000m at Turffontein in May. It will be Coral Fever’s first run at Greyville and while the gelding is languishing at 25-1 in the ante-post betting, he is certainly capable of contesting the minor places.

And finally there has to be a roughie in any July preview. The Vodacom Durban July is a hard race to win under any circumstances, but for fillies it is even harder. The last filly to do so was Igugu (AUS) in 2011. Leading from start to finish, the diminutive filly, trained by Mike de Kock, stayed out of harms way and won with a length in hand. Igugu however, was a 4yr old filly and Fiorella, a daughter of the late Champion Sire Captain Al, is only three. Fiorella however does come into the race with some solid form, with a fourth in the G1 SA Fillies Classic (1800m), finishing 1.55 lengths behind the winner Takingthepeace, before victory in the G2 Daisy Fillies Guineas at Greyville. Her last start on June 2nd in the G1 Woolavington Stakes (2000m) at Greyville, saw her collared late by multiple Grade 1 winner Oh Susanna (AUS), beaten only half a length.Trainer Duncan Howells has booked vastly experienced jockey Mark Khan for the ride. She may be a filly and a 3yr old to boot, but Fiorella is quite capable of causing an upset. Do not be surprised if you see her fighting out the minor placings.

The home to one of South Africa’s all time leading greatest sires, Dynasty, seventeen stallions were presented for show including the great stallion himself, and his son Jackson. Eleven farms participated and sent the likes of Admiral Kitten (Moutonshoek), Vercingetorix (Maine Chance Farms), William Longsword (Klawervlei), Oratorio (Avontuur), Coup De Grace (Klawervlei), Quasillo (Klipdrift Stud) and his half-brother Querari (Maine Chance Farms), Soft Falling Rain (Wilgerbosdrift), Flower Alley (Wilgerbosdrift), Time Thief (Nadeson Park), Visionaire (Lammerskraal Stud) and Louis The King (Sorrento Stud) for an evening under the the spotlights. Visitors sipped on Pink Gin available on tap, and enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres before the stallion parade on a cool winters evening in the Cape winelands. Highlands showed their own stallions which included the very exciting new prospect of proven sire Canford Cliffs who is to stand at stud this year, the fast Rafeef, recent Gr1 producer Pathfork and Jackson. Guests enjoyed a traditional South African braai with the festivities continuing until late into the evening. Congratulations to Highlands and the participating farms on an outstanding Stallion Parade, not to be missed in the future!

he Investec Derby, run on the famous Epsom Racecourse is considered the world over to be the true test of the best of the best, the race everybody wants to win, the Holy Grail of racing. Many try, few succeed. For to win this race with its fabled history, you need not only the best blue blooded three-year-old colt, you need a colt that has the stamina for the gruelling 2400m of the Epsom Downs, a colt that can handle running up the hill and round Tattenham Corner before plunging down a drop of just over 30m.Then when his lungs and legs are screaming for mercy, you need a colt with the heart and the courage to climb the steep rise to the finish. First run in 1780, the Derby was the brainchild of a certain soldier, playwright and politician, called Johnny Burgoyne. In 1776 Burgoyne passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion,The Oaks to the Earl of Derby. He also casually suggested that the Lord Derby should introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half, emulating his old comrade Anthony St Leger, founder of the

St Leger at Doncaster. Three years later the first Oaks was run on the Downs above Epsom. Of course the boys couldn’t be left out in the cold and at an Oaks celebratory dinner Burgoyne suggested that perhaps a similar race for colts would be a good idea. Legend has it that the naming rights went the way of Lord Derby in a coin toss. On Saturday June 2nd, 239 years later on a glorious English summer’s day, a field of twelve colts lined up for the race of their lives on the tricky and challenging course. And what an impressive field it was. Saxon Warrior, winner of the Group 1 Qipco 2000 Guineas and the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy was the clear favourite. Trained by Coolmore maestro Aidan O’Brien, with six Derby victories behind his name and ridden by world champion jockey Ryan Moore, his short price of 4/5 was surely justified. Irish wizard Dermot Weld, with a Melbourne Cup and 23 European Classics behind his name, finally captured his first Derby with Harzand in 2016. Now he was back dreaming of a second victory with another Aga Khan star, Hazapour with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Dettori was of course victorious in 2015 aboard Golden

Horn for trainer John Gosden and Gosden was back for more, saddling Roaring Lion. Another star was the Group 3 Chester Vase winner Young Rascal. Trained by William Haggas, who had seen a distinct drought since his first victory with Shaamit in 1996, the colt was owned by none other than the managing director of race sponsor Investec, Bernard Kantor. Kantor had owned horses for most of his life since “inheriting” a horse from his brother, but had never had a Derby runner. Now in the 10th year of Investec’s Derby sponsorship and in his final year at the helm of Investec, Kantor’s yellow and blue silks would finally parade down the Epsom turf. Then of course there was the familiar blue colours of the mighty Godolphin operation of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Mohammed lives and breathes racing: “Horses are my blood. I love horses and I love racing.” And like it did for Dermot Weld for so many years, the Derby has eluded Sheikh Mohammed.Twice victory had been so tantalizingly close. In 1995 Lammtarra won, in the colours of Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum,

Sheikh Mohammed’s nephew and in 2008 New Approach carrying the colours of Sheikh Mohammed’s wife Princess Haya, crossed the line in first.Yet for the man who had invested heavily in horses for over 40 years, the Derby remained as elusive as the Holy Grail itself. Oh the blue colours of Godolphin had come close several times, finishing second on three occasions with City Honours in 1998, Rule of Law in 2004 and Jack Hobbs in 2015, but victory always remained just out of their grasp. This year the familiar royal blue silks were to be worn by William Buick on the Group 3 Craven Stakes winner, Masar. Not only was Masar sired by a previous Derby winner New Approach, he was also a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed. Could this be the year? The colt paraded like a seasoned pro, ears pricked as he casually took in the sights and sounds of the massive Derby crowd. And when the field turned for home, flying round Tattenham Corner, the familiar blue colours were prominent in the leading group. Masar thundered down the hill with Dee Ex Bee and Roaring Lion in close pursuit. As the incline approached, the crowd started

cheering.Would the chestnut colt have the heart and the courage to keep going, or would the last stretch be his undoing, as it had been for so many before him. Masar however, showed no signs of stopping, striding up the incline and lengthening the gap with a swish of his tail. He was a glorious sight in victory, crossing the line one and a half lengths in front, prompting Buick to stand in his irons, punching the air in delight. The Holy Grail was finally Godolphin’s.

20 years, the last five as trainer, could also not believe what had just happened. “It still hasn’t sunk in yet. When I was appointed a Godolphin trainer five years ago, the aim was to have a Derby winner in the Godolphin blue. All I could think of in the last furlong was that I wanted to be the first trainer to win the Derby in the Godolphin blue. It was a fantastic team effort.”

And the man who has waited over 40 years for this victory? Sheikh Mohammed, with his family in attendance, is a man of few words. Buick, winning his first Derby, could hardly contain his delight.“I am “This is what it is all about, it is something special to win the Derby. not going to explain myself very well but it’s huge, it’s massive. he Vodacom Durban July Day is the highlight of the South African racing calendar and consists of 12 races including the race everybody wants to win, the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July over 2200m. On the first Saturday in July, up to 55,000 local and international racegoers flock to Greyville Racecourse in Durban, where the fashion is colourful and flamboyant, while the racing is fast and furious. The lead up to the big day is also uniquely African. Bean plants are grown to predict the winner, sangomas throw their bones and the fashion theme is announced in a poem. Working away quietly behind the scenes and the driving force behind the event’s hugely successful marketing campaign, is the author of that annual poem, Marketing Manager – Events, Sponsorships and Branding, Mr. July himself, Ken Tweddell. I caught up with Tweddell to learn a little bit more about the man who is part poet, part magician and part military drill sergeant. Tweddell admits that while he did not start his working life off in racing, horses have always been in his blood.

“I started off as an articled clerk at a firm of auditors – big mistake but I managed to stick it out for two and a half years. I don’t regret it as it gave me the basics of finance.” A short stint at a logistics company followed, before Tweddell found his way to one of the leading milling companies in South Africa. Based in Johannesburg, he worked his way up the corporate ladder, eventually becoming the National Marketing Manager. Not one to ever sit on his laurels, Tweddell kept himself busy by simultaneously studying Marketing Management at the UNISA Business Leadership School. It would take sixteen years, but the birth of his son finally persuaded him to move back to Durban, where he got to live his passion for horses as the Marketing Manager of the Durban Turf Club.

For the past 10 years or so the announcement of the annual raceday theme has taken the form of a poem which is used as inspiration for the many fashion competitions and shows that form part of the upcoming July’s early promotion. Tweddell explains why each year’s poem is so important. “In life, nothing stays the same and it is partly through this theme, which puts a totally new perspective on the event every year, coupled with learning from our mistakes and our successes of the previous year and actively making necessary changes to the upcoming year’s event, that we improve the event every year.”

WOMEN IN RACING Racing has always been a man’s world and even in our changing society the number of women in various racing positions, from administrator to photographer are few and far between.

o how does racing go about changing this, was the question up for debate at the recent Asian Racing Conference in Seoul. Victoria Carter, Deputy Chair of NZ Thoroughbred Racing opened the session with a frank discussion on how racing can respond to a rapidly changing world, with the emphasis on staying relevant and driving diversity.

If you can’t see it, how can you be it or believe that it is possible?” she challenged the audience. “Having more women in racing shows all women that it is possible. It means you do not need to be unique, exceptional or chosen and it becomes more of the norm. Remember half the world is women.

outcomes, you need people who are different from you. Hence diversity or gender-balance matters. Change will make our industry stronger.There isn’t an industry today that doesn’t need innovation and new ideas; racing is not alone here.” In conclusion Carter summed up: “So if we want more women to participate in racing we need to find a way to get the other 50% involved.” Following on from Carter, Arena Racing’s Susannah Gill provided an insight into British racing’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. British racing, with its rich heritage, excellent growth and leading position in the production of top quality horses, has recently found itself out of kilter with modern society. This resulted in the formation of a Diversity in Racing Steering Group led by the BHA and included representation from all stakeholder groups. The Group will shortly be publishing a Diversity and Inclusion Action plan. According to Gill, “Society still perceives racing to be a ‘white rich man’s sport’ yet it relies mostly on people who are not white, rich or men. With racing’s administration populated with white middle-aged men, a current staffing shortage, which will only get worse with Brexit and a gender pay gap, British racing is in trouble. So in short not only do we need to attract the brightest and the best, but we also need to

retain them. Hence we have got to be seen to be open for business.” In 2016 the Racing Foundation funded a research project by the Oxford Brookes University on the working environment for different career sectors, career development and support, women in senior positions and specific career areas in racing. In conclusion their recommendations were that a greater understanding of industry diversity is required, the need for career advice and development, the need to address the shortage of women in key positions and the need to balance work life and pastoral care. Next under the spotlight was female ownership as Anna Seitz Ciannello, Client Development and Public Relations Manager of Fasig Tipton gave an informative talk on how she set about creating and expanding female racing syndicates in the United States and abroad. Seitz Ciannello is a born and bred horsewoman, having grown up at Brookdale Farm in Kentucky, the birthplace of horses such as 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another and Champion Hong Kong Stayer California Memory. Four years working for 7-time Eclipse Award–winning trainer, Todd Pletcher saw her handling horses such as Scat Daddy and

Rags To Riches and in 2008 she joined Fasig Tipton in a sales position. These experiences gave her a unique understanding into the role women can and should play in racing. “In my job I realised how exciting it was for people to be involved in owning a racehorse. Hence I put together my first syndicate and bought a filly called I’m Already Sexy. We were not millionaires; we were just a bunch of young people having fun. From there grew the idea of having syndicates for women, where the aim is simply to have fun.“ Partnering with Elaine Lawlor of Goffs, Seitz-Ciannello proceeded to expand her syndicates internationally, with runners in Australia, Ireland and the USA. Her Australian syndicate It’s All About the Girls, formed in 2013, has subsequently brought several hundred new female owners to the sport. With Global Glamour, the syndicate’s Group 1 winning filly, being a prime example of the international reach of such syndicates as she is owned by 40 women from 8 countries! In conclusion, Megumi Ichiyama, the Chief of Staff of the JRA

Publicity Department, shared the strategy of the UMAJO project started in 2012 and aimed at attracting ladies to the racecourse with the delegates. “The project was launched”, Ichiyama explains, “when the JRA realised that less than 14% of all racegoers in Japan were women. Research showed that women not only wanted to race in comfort, but also wanted to be provided with information and to be guided on racing when attending as a newcomer.“ This led to the creation of the UMAJO SPOT, an area set up exclusively for women at each of the JRA Racecourses. Here women are offered a concierge service, introductory brochures, refreshments and even educational tours. The JRA also realised that the horse is a key attraction factor for women and have used this successfully in their poster campaigns. To date the project has already shown to be beneficial with female attendance growing to 17% in 2017. It is clear from the four speakers that not only are woman in racing a necessity, but it is also the only way for racing to grow and flourish, while staying relevant in a rapidly changing world.

SCAT DADDY’S EARLY DEATH A STAGGERING LOSS

here is no way to measure what was lost on that chilly day in December of 2015. When Scat Daddy fell to the ground as he was walking out of his paddock at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky, cut down by heart failure while just settling into his prime at age 11, the potential he possessed to sire many more crops and future champions died with him. With his brilliant and undefeated son Justify having completed a unique sweep of the Triple Crown in June even though unraced as a juvenile, Scat Daddy’s death has been revealed to be even more of a monumental loss than it was at the time. Justify was only months old when his sire passed away, as was another colt who would become a Grade 1 winner, Mendelssohn, the half brother to multiple champion Beholder, who dazzled international racing with a record 18 1/2-length victory in the $2 million UAE Derby in March. “It was extremely unfortunate that (Scat Daddy) died at such a young age, not just for us, but the industry as a whole,” reflected Ashford manager Dermot Ryan about a week after Justify completed his Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes. Speculation has it that Justify eventually will take his sire’s place at Ashford under terms of a deal that is still reportedly pending. He is likely to be joined by Mendelssohn, who was purchased by Coolmore as a yearling for $3 million and is being trained by Aidan O’Brien for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, where he could encounter Justify, who is expected to race on as a three-year-old.

Even with all their accomplishments, however, the sons will have much to do to even begin to compete with their sire as stallions. A multiple Grade 1 winner in a racing career cut short by a bowed tendon suffered after starting as one of the favorites in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, Scat Daddy was an immediate success at stud, ranking as North America’s leading freshman sire of 2011.

“I’m sure he was heading in the direction of the Galileos and the Sadler’s Wells of this world as far as how good he was going to be as a sire,” said Fergus Galvin, co-owner of Hunter Valley Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, where Scat Daddy was raised. “When he died, he was just at the crest of a wave.To think what he could have accomplished with proper Grade 1 mares, which he would have been getting, it could be staggering. It is staggering already—the fact that he had such international appeal, the fact that his offspring could literally run on any surface and at any distance,” Galvin said. By Johannesburg and out of the Mr. Prospector mare Love Style, Scat Daddy was born at Hunter Valley in May 2004, the first year that Galvin and his partners operated the farm. He is listed as bred by Axel Wend, a pseudonym for a prominent European breeder who prefers not to be identified.

“The very first purchase we made was Scat Daddy himself as a baby. We bought the mare, Love Style, and him together as a package privately from his breeder. And he happened to be the first yearling we sold in September the following year—our first Keeneland September yearling that we ever sold,” recalled Galvin. “The mare was very big, and we liked that because with Johannesburg being on the smaller side, she added a lot of size

yearling. He was big, strong and had a terrific walk. We just really, really liked him,” Pletcher said of Scat Daddy. “Mr. Scaturochio and our team talked about it and we just decided we were going to do the best we could to buy him.” Even before he officially turned two, Scat Daddy indicated in his early training with Pletcher’s father, J. J. Pletcher, that he was an outstanding prospect, and he quickly verified that potential once he began racing. “For a good-sized horse, he had plenty of speed. He had everything that you’re looking for—he was tough, he had a big stride, he had tactical speed— everything you could hope for,” Pletcher added of Scat Daddy’s abilities as a racehorse.

His success as a sire has “been a lot of fun for us to see,” he said, “and it’s terribly saddening at the same time that we lost him way, way too soon. It’s hard to predict that one is going to sire a Triple Crown winner, but you could see he was going to make a good stallion and he was just really getting going. What impresses me so much is his versatility. He got colts, he got fillies, he got turf, he got dirt. He got sprinters, he got a Belmont winner—he was literally capable of getting every type of good horse that you could hope for, from one like (Kings Stand Stakes and Prix Morny winner) Lady Aurelia to one like Justify.” “It’s been very exciting to see him do all of this and also very saddening to think of what could have happened had he continued on,” Pletcher added. With Justify’s exploits to his credit, Scat Daddy now is the heir to the legacy of his great grandsire, Storm Cat. Scat Daddy’s outstanding offspring a include European highweights Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia and No Nay Never, with the last named making his mark with his initial crop off and running well for Coolmore. Additionally, Scat Daddy sired ten champions in Chile, where he ranked as leading sire from 2013 through 2016 as a result of three seasons of shuttle duty.

Ryan recalled Scat Daddy as “everything we look for in a future stallion.” “As well as being an incredibly good looking, excellent moving horse, he was a top-class, Grade 1-winning two-year-old and came highly recommended by one of the best trainers in America in Todd Pletcher,” Ryan said.“It was very clear from the outset that he was destined to do well. We were very impressed from the moment his first foals hit the ground, as they mirrored his traits of being imposing, stand-out physicals with outstanding walks.”

CANADA’S HORSE OF THE YEAR S W E E P S T H E S O V E R E I G N AWA R D S He is his country’s most beloved, honored, active racehorse. This was borne out again at the 43rd Annual 2017 Sovereign Awards when 6-year-old gelding Pink Lloyd was named Canada’s Horse of the Year along the way to capturing a total of three awards.

he ceremony, held April 19 at the Palais Royale in Toronto, Ontario and hosted by the Jockey Club of Canada, celebrated the outstanding achievements in Thoroughbred racing and breeding in Canada. Pink Lloyd, by Old Forester out of Gladiator Queen by Great Gladiator, won his remarkable 11th consecutive stakes win on June 3 when he captured the $125,000 (CAD) Achievement Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse. He was a perfect eight for eight in 2017 and in addition to Horse of the Year, the Sovereign voters also honored him with champion older male and champion male sprinter. Across three racing seasons and 16 career starts, the horse with the name inspired by both the classic rock band Pink Floyd and the character Lloyd from the HBO television series Entourage has never run anywhere but his home base of Woodbine. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Runner-up to Pink Lloyd in the Horse of the Year balloting was the 5-year-old mare Ami’s Mesa who became the night’s second multiple award winner when she was

honored with champion older female and champion female sprinter. By Sky Mesa, the Josie Carroll-trainee captured three graded stakes in 2017 including the (G2) Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes and was runner-up in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar. And it was a family affair as Ami’s Mesa’s dam, Victorious Ami (Victory Gallop), was named outstanding broodmare. Toronto businessman Ivan Davos and his Tall Oaks Farm has developed into one of the most successful racing and breeding operations in Canadian history. Not only did Tall Oaks breed Ami’s Mesa, but also produced Canada’s champion male turf horse, Johnny Bear. The seven-yearold gelding was a five-time winner in 2017 including a grade one triumph in last September’s Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine. The race provided one of the most thrilling finishes in Canadian racing last year when Johnny Bear ran down Europe’s multiple group one winner Hawkbill to win by a head bob at the wire. The champion female turf award went to Starship Jubilee who won six of her ten starts including grade 2 triumphs in both the Nassau and Dance Smartly stakes. Her 2018 campaign got off to a great start in January with a win in

the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream Park. Founded in 1860, The Queen’s Plate is Canada’s premier race and this battle of three-year-old horses foaled in Canada is the oldest continuously run race in North America. When Sovereign Awards are presented to two-year-old champions, it also highlights likely Plate contenders for the upcoming summer, and that is the case this year for female juvenile champion. Wonder Gadot is a budding star and a worthy contender for this year’s Queen’s Plate. In May, she mounted a late charge in the (G1) Kentucky Oaks and fell just short by a half-length to winner Monomoy Girl. That was the best finish by a Canadian-bred horse in the race since Gal in a Ruckus won in 1995. Wonder Gadot’s award-winning 2017 campaign was highlighted by wins in the (G2) Demoiselle Stakes and the (G3) Mazarine Stakes, and thus far in 2018, Wonder Gadot has been in the money in all six of her starts. Admiralty Pier was named champion two-yearold male after winning the Display Stakes and earnings of $141,300. In the three-year-old category, Channel Maker took

home the prize as champion 3-year-old male. The Bill Mott-trainee captured the $400,000 (CAD) Breeder’s Stakes last summer, which is the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. He also finished a strong second in late fall in the $300,000 (USD) grade one Hollywood Derby at Del Mar. New champion 3-year-old filly Holy Helena likely clinched her award after she defeated Channel Maker and the rest of the boys in last year’s running of the Queen’s Plate. In doing so, she became the 36th filly to win across 158 years of the grand race. Holy Helena was bred and is owned by Frank Stronach. Stronach’s Adena Springs received the Sovereign Award for outstanding breeder for a record 12th time. Holy Helena was one of eight individual Canadian-bred stakes winners Adena had in 2017. Outstanding owner went to Robert and Mark Krembil’s Chiefswood Stable. The first-time nominee won earnings of more than $2.2 million in 2017 and was led by Sovereign finalists Tiz a Slam and Yorkton. For the seventh consecutive year and a record 10 times overall, the trophy for outstanding trainer went to Mark Casse. Over the years, Casse has trained Canadian Horse of

the Year winners Sealy Hill, Catch a Glimpse and Lexie Lou and currently conditions champion Wonder Gadot, Sovereign finalist Enstone and 2017 (G2) Nearctic Stakes winner Field of Courage. Team Pink Lloyd achieved even greater success when Eurico Rosa da Silva captured his 5th Sovereign Award for outstanding jockey. His 203 wins in Canada during 2017 included an incredible 34 stakes wins at Woodbine, most notably the $800,000 G1 Pattison Canadian International aboard 42-1 longshot Bullards Alley. Eurico has been Canada’s leading jockey for the past three years and in addition to being Pink Lloyd’s jockey during the horse’s current 11-race victory streak, he also piloted Sovereign finalists Dixie Moon, Melmich and Mr. Havercamp last year. The Sovereign Award for outstanding apprentice jockey went to Rey Williams. A native of Barbados, Williams captured 41 victories last year with more than 50% of his mounts finishing in the money. The award for outstanding groom was presented to Nicaraguan native Alfredo

Ramos who has worked for Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield since 2008 and a Sovereign for top handicapper was presented to Michael Eisen. Media awards were presented to Dave Landry for outstanding photograph, Perry Lefko for outstanding writing, Horse Racing Alberta for outstanding digital audio/visual & broadcast, and the Jockey Club of Canada Award went to Tyson Lautenschlager at the School of Media Studies and Information Technology, Humber Institute of Advanced Technology and Advance Learning. A special Sovereign was presented to Sam Lima, a horseowner, horseplayer and long-time member of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. In 2017, Canada celebrated its 250th Anniversary of Horse Racing in the country by telling the stories, reveling in the history, and honoring those humans and horses who have preceded us. The Sovereign Awards, like its American Eclipse Award and European Cartier Award counterparts, provides a snapshot in time to be looked back upon and remembered for future generations to come.
