ROSIE RIALL WINS
WILDEST HORSE RACE IN THE WORLD Photos by Daniella Zondagh

O
n 19 October 2018, the young UK-based rider Rosie Riall triumphed as the winner of the second-ever Race the Wild Coast endurance horse race, crossing the finish line at the Kei Mouth ahead of 13 other international competitors to take home the
tracks, rocky paths, beach runs, and often adverse weather conditions - earning it the moniker of “the wildest horse race in the world”. From a technical perspective, it is certainly one of the most challenging endurance races in existence.
Race the Wild Coast, which is sponsored by international apparel brand KTC and supported by Striped Horse craft beer, is a new breed of long-distance horse racing set along the aptly named Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This year’s race was staged from 16-19 October 2018.
Says race organizer and co-founder Barry Armitage of Rockethorse Racing: “This year’s race was certainly tough and it’s an achievement just to finish. We congratulate all our riders who traversed the rugged paradise that is South Africa’s Wild Coast. And we take our racing cap off to the winner. It was a tight finish, but Rosie pipped her mate Anna Boden to the line due to strategy, determination, sheer grit and excellent horsemanship!”
The race is organised by South African company Rockethorse Racing, which launched its first event in 2016. This complex, multi-stage race covers 350km of untamed wilderness and includes river and estuary crossings, narrow cliff-top
For the first time in the race’s history, other intrepid adventure sports enthusiasts from different disciplines were welcomed onto the field. Legendary endurance trail runner Steve Black and adventure canoeist Clyde Barendse pitted their skills

against those of the riders and raced the horses to the finish line, with Black running the trail and Barendse paddling across rivers and breakers. Future editions of the event will see other forms of endurance sport such as Mountain Biking also included in Race the Wild Coast. Taking part in the 2018 edition were 14 riders in total: Anna Boden (UK), Daisy Soames (UK), Jamey Altman (USA), Katy Willings (UK), Iain Paterson (UK), Francisco Schnaas (MX), Courtney Kizer (USA), Catriona Paterson (CAN), Melissa Montgomery (USA), Chetta Crowley (AUS), Rosie Riall (UK), Hanna Bartnick (USA), Julie Eldridge (USA), and Mohammed Nasser (UAE). No South Africans took part in this edition, but the 2016 race was won by South Africa’s own Monde Khanyana who beat an international field that comprised a high number of Mongol Derby veterans, including the 2014 Mongol Derby
winner, Australian Sam Jones, who came second in the 2016 South African race. During Race the Wild Coast 2018, the constantly changing conditions due to rain and wind on the first two days resulted in frequent alterations to the leader positions. Horse and rider had to work together to overcome obstacles. At times riders grouped together as teams, with the trailing pack working together to catch up to the leaders. Melissa Montgomery (USA) impressed fans on Day 2 by catching up with the leading pack after a tough river crossing despite a fractured left wrist. Other riders were not so fortunate, with Hanna Bartnick withdrawing on Day 3 after an injured ankle affected her ability to ride. Mohammed Nasser withdrew on Day 4 due to an injured knee. Julie Eldridge was unfortunate to have her third horse (the riders change mounts at various stages) vetted out at the Bulungula vet check but continued

the race as a non-competitor after mounting a spare horse. Covering 80km per day, the race took place over 12 stages. At the end of each stage, horses were thoroughly checked by Rockethorse Racing’s own head vet as well as SPCA vets to ensure that the animals remained in top condition. The horses’s health is paramount and time penalties are incurred for overworking the horses, which can seriously impact the leaderboard. The horses were sourced from local endurance stud Moolmanshoek run by Wiesman Nel. The mounts included three types: pure bred Arabian horses for speed, Arabians crossbred with local Boerperde for their hardiness and temperament, and pure Boerperde suited to the tough conditions of the Wild Coast. The terrain of the race varies. It spans hard sand on beaches
with outgoing tides; coastal hills cut by ravines that often require leading the horses; tight forested tracks; and soft sand where haste could result in tendon injuries. Not to mention several river swims… While thrilling, this arduous enterprise forces riders to keep a steady pace while reading the immediate landscape for the fastest or most efficient route – never knowing what might come next. It is not known as the “wild” coast for nothing… Endurance horse racing is a growing genre of adventure racing internationally, and South Africans are no strangers to the sport. Armitage himself won the Mongol Derby in 2017. Race the Wild Coast blends the spirit of the frontiersman and the modern horseback adventurer – a test of endurance, horsemanship, survival and navigational skills across an iconic wilderness – and is making its mark as a global sporting classic.

EQUUS AWARDS 2018
The 2018 Equus Awards recognised South African breeding and racing excellence once again this year, in a glittering affair at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre. Clyde Basel oversaw the evenings proceedings. Gaynor Rupert’s Drakenstein Stud dominated the special awards most deservingly – taking home Owner Of The Year and Horse Of The Year with the outstanding Oh Susanna (AUS), bred by Gaynor in Australia. Oh Susanna was also rewarded with Champion 3YO Filly and Champion Middle Distance Horse. Gaynor Rupert gave a deeply captivating speech and thanked Mick Goss for introducing her to the world of breeding and racing champions.

Justin Snaith had an outstanding season, awarded as Champion Trainer, he produced the first three horses across the line in the Vodacom Durban July. Leading breeder went to Klawervlei Stud who are standing some of South Africa’s most exciting young sires – amongst them Twice Over and Pomodoro (Return Flight won Champion 2YO Filly) - who produced Gr1 winners from their first crops to race. John Koster gave a moving acceptance speech, and called for unity of the horseracing industry. Robin Bruss of Northfields Stud will remember the 2017 / 2018 racing season as the year that he bred two Gr1 winners from only 10 runners produced – that of Do It Again (Champion 3YO Colt), and Equus Champion Sprinter Will Pays. From the 10 runners, he had 11 wins and a winners to runners percentage of 60% for the season – with an impressive 5 Black Type Wins.

oolmore and Godolphin are commonly known as racing’s superpowers, yet while the former clock up Group 1 victories with the regularity of a metronome, the latter has been struggling. No one has poured more money into racing and bloodstock or been more passionate than Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, but the results just weren’t there. Runners carrying the familiar blue colours were competing in the biggest races around the world, but they just weren’t cracking it. Then in 2017 came a sea change. After refusing to buy any yearlings by Coolmore stallions for over a decade, Sheikh Mohammed finally called a halt to the boycott when buying some yearlings by Galileo at the major sales during 2017. While these yearlings will only be lining up for the Classic races in 2019, it seems as if the Sheikh’s change of heart also brought a change of fortune to the beleaguered Godolphin for on the 2nd of June this year, forty years after his first victory in the Epsom Derby and 33 defeats later, a Godolphin homebred, Masar (IRE), ridden by William Buick, carried Sheikh Mohammed’s royal blue colours to victory in the race that is considered the ultimate test of a three-year-old thoroughbred colt.
28
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
Godolphin’s resurgence however, did not stop there. Success upon success followed as Buick, Godolphin’s retained rider, steered Blue Point (IRE) to victory in the Group 1 King’s Stand stakes at Royal Ascot, a mere two weeks later. Buick was also in the irons when another homebred, Wild Illusion (GB) won the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in August, before backing up on Arc day to claim the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera Longines, defeating Coolmore’s Magic Wand (IRE) in the process. And the exciting two-year-old Quorto (IRE), also bred by Godolphin, remained unbeaten when winning the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh in September. It therefore came as no surprise when Best Solution (IRE), trained by Saeed bin Suroor, won the Group 1 Longines Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten in Berlin. Another day, another Group 1 victory for the “Boys in Blue”. Best Solution was on a roll having previously won the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket a month earlier. The colt’s next assignment was to be Germany’s most prestigious race, the Group 1 Longines Grosser Preis von Baden. With Godolphin’s rather sketchy history when it comes to winning abroad and with the race traditionally being a lead up race for the Group 1 Prix de ‘Arc de Triomphe, little notice was taken of Best Solution’s participation. After all, the last

time Bin Suroor trained the winner of the Grosser Preis von Baden was in 2003 when Mamool carried the Sheikh’s colours to victory. That however would prove to be a costly mistake on the part of the doubters. For despite some stiff competition from the Roger Varian trained Defoe (IRE) and Germany’s Horse of the Year Iquitos (GER), Best Solution surged to victory in Baden- Baden to win by a neck under Pat Cosgrave. A delighted Bin Suroor, who was on track to lead in his star, described Best Solution as one of his three stars, the other two being 2018 Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow (IRE) and 2018 Dubai Turf winner Benbatl (GB). When quizzed as to what lies ahead for Best Solution, Bin Suroor was quick to point out that the colt was going straight into quarantine for an Australian Spring campaign. “The plan is now to go to Australia for the Caulfield Cup and then the Melbourne Cup. He’ll go into quarantine now in preparation for that.” Australia however has been another nemesis of the Boys in Blue. Winning the iconic Melbourne Cup has been a dream of Sheikh Mohammed since he started his racing operation. Yet despite several attempts since the race was opened to international runners in 2002, success has firmly eluded the Godolphin runners.
30
INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
Could Best Solution be the answer they have been looking for? The colt has never run over further than 2400m, putting a big question mark over whether he would see out the gruelling 3200m of the Flemington track. Only time will tell. In the meantime, the Godolphin runners have been blazing a trail during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Benbatl (GB) and stable companion Blair House (IRE) finishing 1-2 in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes, while Best Solution continued his winning ways with victory in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. According to Charlie Appelby, his assignment on joining Godolphin in 2013, was simple - win two races. There was a catch however, as the two races that Sheikh Mohammed so desperately wanted to win, were the Epsom Derby and the Melbourne Cup. The first Appelby has ticked off and between Appelby and Bin Suroor they think they have the right horses to achieve the second. So should a horse in blue flash across the line come the first Tuesday in November, it will be the fairy tale ending Sheikh Mohammed has spent a lifetime dreaming of. Whatever happens in the 2018 Melbourne Cup, two things are for sure. Godolphin is once again a true superpower of racing, with their resurgence unlikely to fade anytime soon and that Melbourne Cup victory, unlike the Epsom Derby, won’t take another four decades to achieve.

VEUVE CLICQUOT
MASTERS POLO CAPE TOWN 2019 The game, the champagne and the colour match!
T
he prestigious Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo Cape Town will return to Val de Vie Estate on 2 March 2019. Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Paarl-Franschhoek mountains, this stylish sporting and social event marks the peak of the South African polo season.
The ninth annual event, a highlight on the Western Cape calendar, will focus on the sport that has shown a sharp rise in popularity and skill in Africa over the past few years. It is expected that more than 3000 prestigious guests, many from neighbouring countries and provinces, will pay homage to the high-speed, highskill game of polo while sipping Veuve Clicquot and celebrating summer. What’s new at the 2019 event is the extension of the VIP area where guests will have the opportunity to track the live polo match on oversized screens and remain engaged with the game. Colour has always been at the heart of Veuve Clicquot and is a source of the champagne’s creativity and inspiration. It was in 1816 that Madame Clicquot developed the first riddling table designed to guarantee a crystal-clear wine and thus enhance the purity of colour of her champagne. She also created the first blended rosè in order to create a more intense colour and taste. This is the inspiration behind 2019’s “Colourama” theme that promises several artistic interpretations of the Veuve Clicquot heritage and a live fashion experience against the background of the game. In line with Veuve Clicquot polo matches in New York and Los Angeles, the spotlight is on understated but elegant daywear in chic colour blocking ranging from sunburst yellow to blushpink. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for the much-anticipated divot-stomping during half time of the polo match. This year ‘Best Dressed’ falls away, conforming with the international celebration of polo with focus on the game, social and business networking and the Veuve Clicquot lifestyle experience. The day will also begin earlier to allow guests to make their way to after-party venues in surrounding towns. Renowned as one of the best polo events in the world, the 2019 Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo will be attended by influencers, thought-leaders and VIPs from across the African Continent.

RAINBOW BRIDGE TO A POT OF GOLD?
Every season brings new stars to the Cape racing scene as talented three-year-olds step out to strut their stuff. Some go on to achieve greatness with a string of Graded victories behind their names, while others burn bright, only to fade quickly.

Rainbow Bridge
T
herefore, I tend to greet each young new ‘star’ with a healthy mix of excitement and scepticism. But when top jockey Richard Fourie hopped off a bright bay gelding in the winner’s box back in April and boldly stated “this horse doesn’t belong in this country”, I sat up and took notice. For as a seasoned veteran of the cauldron that is Hong Kong racing, Fourie understands perfectly what it takes for a horse to be good enough to compete on the international stage. And Fourie had just hopped off the aptly named Rainbow Bridge. The bay gelding by Mauritzfontein’s exciting stallion Ideal World (USA), out of the Jet Master mare Halfway to Heaven was bred by the Wilgerboschdrift Stud & Mauritzfontein, and offered as Lot 122 at the 2016 BSA National Yearling Sale in Johannesburg where Cape trainer Eric Sands snapped him up for R300,000 on behalf of owner Chris Gerber. Halfway To Heaven was a talented lady in her own right, with seven victories including the Grade 3 Prix du Cap and the Listed Off To Stud Handicap behind her name.
he likes to see the individual in the flesh and Rainbow Bridge ticked all the boxes. Rainbow Bridge unfortunately missed the early three-year-old races due to an injury and hence his first start only came in a Maiden Plate over 1200m at Kenilworth on the 7th of April. With Fourie in the saddle, the gelding cantered home comfortably by 2.25 lengths. Sands clearly knew he had a potential star in his stable as the gelding’s next start saw him step up in distance and straight into Graded Stakes company, as he lined up in the Grade 3 Highlands Stud Winter Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth on the 28th of April. “It is not what I would normally do, but I gave Chris the option of taking a softer route. I don’t often get one this good and the Guineas only comes once in a horse’s career. He was injured early on and has been given plenty of time. He’s smart”, Sands explained. Smart indeed, as despite having to overcome a wide draw, Rainbow Bridge came home lonely, demolishing his opposition with an electrifying turn of foot to win by 1.25 lengths from the Grade 2 Selangor Cup winner Rocket Countdown. And it was in the winner’s box afterwards that Fourie made his prophetic comment.
Having trained Halfway To Heaven, Sands went to view her offspring on the studfarm and was very impressed with what he saw. Sands explains that while a yearling’s pedigree is important, The Winter Guineas is the first leg of the Highlands Stud

Winter Triple Crown Series for three-year-olds and Rainbow Bridge’s next mission would be the second leg, the Grade 3 Highlands Stud Winter Classic over 1800m. Fourie again had the ride, but it was to be a very different ride from the previous one. From the start everything went wrong, as Rainbow Bridge became his own worst enemy. Fourie moved the gelding forward to sit closer to the leaders, but Rainbow Bridge refused to settle and fought Fourie all the way home and into the home straight. Any normal horse would have long run out of fuel by now, but this clearly is no ordinary horse and still fighting for his head, Rainbow Bridge powered into the lead to win by a length with luckless Rocket Countdown again relegated to second. Fourie himself was astounded. “There is no way he should have won that, running and fighting me like that and yet he did”, he commented. Speculation aplenty followed. Would the gelding line up for the final leg of the series or would Sands elect to go straight to the Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July with his charge? Marinaresco, the 2016 winner of the Winter Series Triple Crown, had gone on to win the July a year later. Could Rainbow Bridge achieve the impossible and win both in the same year? Sands however, is not known as a horseman extraordinaire for no reason and the seasoned trainer wisely decided that his young charge had had enough. “He has been getting rather hot on race days, and after discussions with owner Chris Gerber we felt he isn’t ready mentally to travel and go for the July at this early stage”, Sands explained. Not only would Rainbow Bridge not line up in either
race, but he would be spelled till the start of the 2018/2019 season. Four months later the now four-year-old Rainbow Bridge stepped out with new rider Bernard Fayd’herbe in the irons to contest the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes over 1400m at the tighter country track of Durbanville Racecourse. Midway up the short home straight the race looked all but over, and it seemed as if the Ideal World gelding’s unbeaten streak was about to come to an abrupt end. Then Fayd’herbe pressed the button. Rainbow Bridge switched on the afterburners and within a matter of strides, the gelding’s by now familiar electrifying turn of foot propelled him past the leaders and across to the line, to win by 1.25 lengths, with New Caledonia in second. What comes next one wonders? Sands comments that he will be following a tried and tested path, a route favoured by horses such as duel Horse of the Year Legal Eagle and Grade 1 winner Captain America. “His next start will be in the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes (1600m), then the Grade 1 L’Ormarins’ Queen’s Plate Stakes (1600m) and if all goes well the Grade 1 Sun Met over 2000m.” Rainbow Bridge is unbeaten over 1200m-1800m and one cannot imagine that the extra 200m of the Sun Met will be a problem. For now though, Sands is taking things one race at a time. After all, having trained past champions such as Flobayou, Jungle Warrior and Perfect Promise, Sands knows what it takes to reach that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and he might just have the perfect Rainbow Bridge to get there.

Tradition holds that Veuve Clicquot winemakers use a pencil to jot down their notes about each wine before they proceed to the all-important act of blending. The Veuve Clicquot Magnetic Pencil in each box is a chic accessory for your fridge, just waiting to be personalised with a happy message or bright reminder. Put your own spin on a long-standing winemaking tradition by simply writing your message on the Magnetic Pencil, then displaying it on your fridge while you chill your 750ml bottle of Yellow Label. Colour is such a radiant and expressive part of the Veuve Clicquot winemaking process and has long been essential to its heritage. Veuve Clicquot winemakers blend each Champagne, using unique reserve wines, with the same great savoir-faire and skill as artists who blend colours. Madame Clicquot’s most audacious innovations were inspired in part by bright hues and in 1816 Madame Clicquot invented the riddling table. This brilliant idea was born from her desire for Champagne pure in colour, that eliminated the lees deposit in the bottle. And 200 years ago, in 1818, she made the first known blended rosé Champagne, a creation distinct in taste, aroma, and luminous colour. Madame Clicquot knew that colour is essential to appreciating wine. Before the wine even touches our lips, we perceive a wine’s colours, depths, and luminosities. As Madame Clicquot once wrote, “our wines must be flattering both on the palate and on the eye.” The Veuve Clicquot Colorama Collection proves once again, with bright trendy accessories and chic Champagne, that life tastes better in colour!

Added his son Colin: “He has settled in very nicely and is covering well. We supported him last year and from all reports, he is siring really good looking foals with plenty of quality. He’s a lovely horse to work with, with a great temperament and character. If his foals look like him and can run like him, he will have a great chance at stud.”
Trained by Joey Ramsden, the R700,000 yearling mixed it up with the best in a career spanning four seasons. Gr.1placed at two when second in the SA Nursery and third in the Cape Guineas, the bay proved himself a tip top sprinter. Runner-up in the Cape Flying Championship and Golden Horse Sprint, he finally broke through at the elite level when successful in the Gr.1 Mercury Sprint, defeating such luminaries as Gr.1 winners Real Princess, Gulf Storm, Fly By Night and subsequent champion Talktothestars. Boasting a pedigree out of the very top drawer, Red Ray is out of blue hen mare Nacarat. To Western Winter, she also produced Gr.1 winner Nania, Gr.2 winners Brutal Force and Bishops Bounty, and the Listed Stakes winner Valor Red. Significantly, Red Ray’s third dam is the successful Birch mare Port Wine. A daughter of erstwhile Vogel Vlei champion stallion Plum Bold, she produced Horse of the Year Royal Chalice and also features as the grandam of Gr.1 winners Set Afire (also by Western Winter) and Rudra.

THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER
When warm weather comes to the Western Cape beaches, thoroughbreds seem to follow. This week was the first of many summer excursions to Melkbosstrand beach with Glen Kotzen and his team from Woodhill Racing. The beach is always an exciting morning for the team and the accomplished riders that join, such as Woodhill’s assistant trainer Desmond Mclachlan, retired assistant trainer Wendy Michel, ex jockey Vicky Minott, Glen’s son Kuyan Kotzen and of course the great team of Woodhill work riders. This week’s string included the likes of Gr.1 Investec Derby winner Eyes Wide Open, Lanza, Seattle Force, Herodotus and even Glen’s spritely 24 year old Ghostly Galleon who was Glen’s first group winner back in the day. Many more photo’s of beach trips and racing alike as we prepare for a stellar Cape Summer Season.

he house has been in the family nearly 75 years. Walk through the living and dining rooms and you will see them. Trophies and mementoes of equine lives welllived. Steeplechase, Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing, and team dressage memories — proof of pinnacles achieved — and a family who turned their dreams into reality. This estate on 150 beautiful acres located north of Toronto in Maple, Ontario, Canada is home to Thoroughbred trainer Catherine Day Phillips, her husband Todd and teenage sons Blake and Colton. She is a third-generation horsewoman who was, metaphorically speaking, born into the business. Both of her parents were trainers and her maternal grandparents were successful owners and breeders. Some of Canada’s greatest racehorses have come in and out of her barn during her 24 years as a trainer. Day Phillips’ horses have career earnings of more than $17 million and last year, a remarkable 53% of her 96 starters were in the money. And when it counts most, in graded stakes competition, 56% of her 43 career starters have been in the money with a 23% winning percentage. She has been influenced and touched by so many over the
years and the influence of her bloodlines is immeasurable.Yet, if there has been one constant across generations of family, it was introduced exactly 60 years ago at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack. A jockey took a horse out to the track one afternoon and his silks revealed — a small, rustic green maple leaf on a white body. Charles and Janet When he was 26, Charles Fowler Williams Burns was an entrepreneur. After borrowing $500 from his father in 1932, he established a bond company named Burns and Co.Two years later, he bought a seat on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In 1945, Burns and his wife Janet purchased Kingfield Farms and a new chapter in Canadian equine competition had begun. “My grandfather had a vision and dream to be involved with world class horses and he was able to do so in his lifetime,” says Catherine Day Phillips.“And he was Canadian through and through.” The Burns loved horses and competition. They were passionate supporters of the Canadian dressage team as well as Canadian Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing. When the green maple leaf silks of Kingfield first appeared that day in 1958 at Woodbine, it truly signaled a beginning of devotion to racing

in their native land. As time went by, Charles Burns yearned for more. “My grandfather always wanted to have top racehorses,” says Day Phillips. “But he never really had the success he wanted to have on the world stage.” There was an exception, however, and it came in 1969. Burns had a desire to enter and win England’s Grand National Steeplechase. And he and co-owner Tom McCoy did just that when Highland Wedding captured the prize. In 1981, he bred a Standardbred horse named Legal Notice. Charles Burns died in 1982 never knowing two years later, the horse would win the inaugural running of one of the great events in the world of harness racing, the North America Cup. A Family Affair After her husband’s death, Janet Burns carried on the breeding and racing operation and sustained the legacy of success established by she and her late husband. In 1988, Burns sponsored Canadian Olympic dressage rider Cindy Ishoy and her beloved horse Dynasty. This support came to fruition in the Seoul Summer Olympic games when the duo contributed to Canada’s Dressage team winning a Team Bronze Medal. The baton had been passed to a new generation. Charles and

Janet had three children including daughter Janet “Dinny” Burns who married Canadian Olympic equestrian show jumping champion Jim Day. 1968 was a big year for the couple. In January, Dinny gave birth to daughter Catherine and later that October, Jim was a member of Canada’s gold-medal equestrian team in the Mexico City Summer Olympic games. Day moved on to take a position with Sam-Son Farms which he held for 23 years. During this time, he was named Canada’s top trainer four times, winning five Canadian Horse of the Year honors, two Queen’s Plate awards, two American Eclipse awards, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and the Canadian Triple Crown. Dinny Day not only raised Catherine and her brother Richard, but was a successful Thoroughbred trainer in her own right. In 1983, she trained 3-year-old Kingfield horse Pax Nobiscum to five consecutive wins including stakes triumphs in the Marine Stakes and the Toronto Cup. Then in June, Dinny made racing history by becoming the first female trainer to win the Ohio Derby. The jubilation turned to sorrow three months later on September 18 when Dinny Day died of cancer at age 43. After her mother’s death, Jim Day asked 18-year-old Catherine if she might want to help out around his barn. “Initially, I only came in a couple of hours each morning,” recalls Day Phillips.“I couldn’t believe after the first week I actually got paid to ride horses.”
She grew up around show horses and dressage and at age 12 she spent three weeks in Europe helping Cindy Ishoy from Canada’s Olympic Dressage Team. But now it was Thoroughbreds that were available to her. Time went by and Day Phillips attended St Lawrence University in Canton, New York. “I thought about training when I was in school and really chose against it and decided to go a different path for a little while,” recalls Day Phillips. “I guess I was looking to be my own boss.Training seemed to be something I knew and I could start my own business with something I had a legitimate background in. It was a process of elimination, but I just sort of fell into it.” A Golden Champion In 1994, Catherine Day took out her trainer’s license and began with four Kingfield homebreds and the support of her grandmother. In early summer, she won her first race with Gentleman Artist and Hall of Fame jockey Sandy Hawley and won her first stakes race three years after that. In 1998, she would meet someone who would change her life forever. While training, Catherine developed an interest in polo. Her instructor was Todd Phillips whose family had deep roots in equestrian sport, namely show jumping. Todd asked her out and asked again and again until she finally agreed. One year later, they married. In addition to their marriage, Catherine and Todd also formed
a strong partnership across the entire racing operation.Todd runs the farm which provides a retreat for those horses requiring rest or rehabilitation before they are returned to Catherine to resume their training. They discuss all issues pertaining to Kingfield Racing Stable and this includes a thorough inspection and recommendation strategy at annual yearling sales. Not long after their marriage, the Phillips helped form a syndicate named Ten Goal Racing Stable with 18 partners. The purchased shares enabled the syndicate to secure three yearlings. “As a young trainer, as a woman, there weren’t people knocking on the door saying ‘train horses for me,’ ” recalls Day Phillips. “A syndicate was a way to get new horses into the barn.” Members of the original group wanted more. So a second syndicate was formed with fewer partners and a higher investment and it was called The Two Bit Racing Stable. In 2002, the partners spent $100,000 to purchase two high price yearlings. One horse was purchased for $40,000, ran in three career races, never won and earned a total of $1,200. The remaining $60,000 was spent on a son of grade one winner Gold Fever out of Annasan by Corporate Report. The young colt’s name was A Bit O’Gold. He showed promise of great things to come during his two-year-old season of 2003 when he won his first three times out including a triumph in the Coronation Futurity at Woodbine in November.

He journeyed down Canada’s Triple Crown trail the following year and after a second-place finish in the Queen’s Plate, he captured the two remaining jewels, the Prince of Wales and the Breeders’ Stakes. After 114 annual renewals of the Breeders’ Stakes, it was the first win by a female trainer. A Bit O’Gold’s sterling season was rewarded with the 2004 Sovereign Award for Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.
the 2003 September Yearling Sales at Keeneland, they were able to purchase him for the rock bottom amount of $2,500 as some confusion with the horse’s x-rays appeared to scare others away. His first three races on dirt were lackluster and it appeared his owners got what they paid for. But in summer of his three-year-old season, he was switched to turf resulting in one of the best decisions in Canadian racing history.
In 2005, A Bit O’Gold became one of the leading older male horses in North America. He took the Phillips and the Two Bit Racing Stable to three graded stakes wins and an appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park. And on a cold night in December, he led them back to a packed house at Toronto’s Sutton Hall Ballroom to collect three more Sovereign Awards including the trophy for 2005’s Canadian Horse of the Year. At year’s end, the four-time champion was retired with career earnings of $1,788,256. “Goldie” had helped everyone in Canadian racing know the name Catherine Day Phillips. Eight months later, everyone in American racing would know her as well.
Jambalaya won his first four races on the grass including a grade 3 triumph at Saratoga and a second consecutive Breeders’ Stakes win for Catherine. He won just one race the following year but it set the stage for his 5-year-old season of 2007. He returned to the United States and Gulfstream Park to begin his spring campaign where he demonstrated an affinity for travel and turf tracks with tight turns by capturing the (GI) Gulfstream Park Turf Stakes and the (GIII) Pan American Handicap.
A Million Memories At first glance, he wasn’t much to look at. He was somewhat gangly with very large feet. The son of Langfuhr out of Muskrat Suzie by Vice Regent, Jambalaya drew the interest of Catherine and Todd who won a grade 3 with a relative of the horse. At
After placing in two graded stakes back in Canada, he traveled to Chicago in early August to compete in the 25th running of the (GI) Arlington Million at Arlington International Racecourse. He faced formidable competition including 9-yearold defending champion The Tin Man and French superstar Doctor Dino. Jambalaya went off as fifth choice at 7-1 and broke well and to the inside. Jockey Robby Albarado followed Catherine’s pre-race instructions to shadow The Tin Man and stayed close in fourth position.

At the top of the stretch Jambalaya made his move on frontrunner The Tin Man. “Watching him run down the lane, I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re going to be third in the Arlington Million,’ “ recalls Day Phillips. “Then halfway down the stretch I saw him dig in and pin his ears. I thought: He’s going to win this!!!“
“Catherine is very good with developing young horses,” says Dixon. “She’s great at bringing them along from the beginning and developing foundation. And with that foundation, they can carry on for years. Jambalaya was hurt and was able to come back probably because of that foundation she helped develop in him as a young horse.”
And he did.The crowd of 32,055 saw a green maple leaf fly by some of the world’s leading turf stars and cross the finish. Not only had Jambalaya become the first Canadian-bred to win the Million, but like her mother before her, Catherine Day Phillips made history as the first female trainer to capture a notable American race.
When Jambalaya crossed the finish line with a two-length victory, the comeback was complete. And the race was run on the 26th anniversary of Catherine’s mother’s death. “The Arlington Million was great but I think my proudest moment in racing was Jambo’s comeback race with the accomplishment of getting him back to the races, getting him back to top form and getting back to his old self,” says Day Phillips. “It was very emotional when he crossed the finish and there wasn’t a dry eye around. I know I didn’t have a dry eye. I am sure that my mother was there with us.”
The Comeback Jambalaya came out of the Million with a bone bruise in his right front fetlock. When that healed, he pulled a gluteal muscle. And when he was ready to begin again in early 2008, he went lame on his left front. He was sent to the Phillips’ training center in Ocala, Florida with the intention of retiring the horse but Jambalaya gave every indication he wasn’t ready to call it a career. On September 18, 2009, nearly 25 months after his last race, the 7-year-old gelding made his comeback in an allowance race at Woodbine. Candice Dixon was a longtime assistant trainer for the Phillips.
Death ends a life but it doesn’t end a relationship. Horizon On a warm Wednesday evening in early August, Catherine Day Phillips had a total of six horses entered in races 4-7 at Woodbine. “It was crazy busy in the paddock but my boys were there and they helped with the equipment and saddling — it was special.”

The legacy that Charles and Janet Burns began continues to grow. Today, Catherine, Todd and Kingfield Racing Stable has 40 stalls at Woodbine and 75% of their horses are clientowned. Catherine and her family live in the main house that previously belonged to her grandparents. The land is divided between the Kingfield operation on one half and Catherine’s brother Richard Day runs a breeding operation called Kingview Farms on the other. Catherine trained 2008 Sovereign Award champion Van Lear Rose for her brother. 2018 has been successful to date, highlighted by wins from Dixie Moon in the Woodbine Oaks and Mr. Havercamp in the (GII) Play the King Stakes. And the future is bright with exciting fillies Mexican Hat, Katie Baby and Artilena. It is a dream of every Canadian trainer to win the Queen’s Plate and Catherine is no exception with heartbreaking second-place finishes in 2004 (A Bit O’Gold) and 2009 (Mr. Foricos Two U). Beyond winning the Plate, she would like to compete more in the United States and participate in a U.S.Triple Crown race one day. To understand how Catherine Day Phillips has grown into one of the finest trainers in North America, you need only listen to those who know her best. When Catherine trained Neshama to a 2016 Woodbine Oaks title, it gave co-owner Mitchell Kursner the thrill of a lifetime. “I don’t think there is a finer trainer anywhere. She is right up there with them all,” says Kursner. “When she brings a horse over to the front side, it looks like a million bucks. And nobody can argue with the way she does things because she gets results.”
Candice Dixon worked with Catherine for more than 11 years. “She’s very hands-on and very involved in the barn. Her attention to detail and thorough knowledge about each horse is very beneficial to that horse.” Legacy When Catherine formed her own stable, she adopted the green maple leaf and after the death of her grandparents, she added two black hoops to each sleeve in their memory. “The maple leaf is definitely my grandfather, my grandmother, my mother, our farm,” says Day Phillips. “Everything I grew up with. Representing Canada is very special to me and it was important to them. I feel privileged to carry it on a bit.” Will there be a fourth generation to carry it further still? Sons Blake and Colton Phillips have demonstrated a growing interest in horses over time, so who knows?“If they have the same passion for it and they love doing it, I would be very proud to have them carry on,” says Day Phillips. “I just want them to be satisfied and enjoy what they do.You spend so much time at work and as you get older, it’s really important to love what you do.” Often, when she gets home late in the afternoon, Catherine will walk outside and over to the paddock at the front of the farm. She will lean over the fence and feed apples to A Bit O’Gold and Jambalaya. She loves seeing them at the end of a long day and it enables her to look around and remember a time, a place and family.

Established by Heinz Weil in 1969 with a total of three mares, Arica, Balata and Mariage, Gestüt Etzean is an interesting and unusual stud, with a fascinating history. Weil famously had to sell a house in Frankfurt in order to fund the purchase of the stud’s first stallion Dashing Blade, who was one of the best two-year olds of his generation, with victories in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst. With so few mares, the stud initially bred solely to race as most German Studs do, but as the mare band grew and grew, selling for racing became a necessity. While the burgeoning stud mostly bought mares at sales or at the end of their racing careers, Monbijou, Monami’s granddam was unusually purchased by Weil as a yearling. Fellow breeders were perplexed as Monbijou was by Etzean’s resident stallion Dashing Blade. In Germany buying a yearling by your stallion that was bred by someone else was simply not the done thing, after all your own home-breds were surely. But Weil was an astute studier of pedigrees and had long wanted to buy into this East German family that was renowned for its toughness.

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE
Ten years ago Weil’s daughter, Christiane Weil-Dassbach took over the running of the stud and nowadays Etzean stands 3 stallions and run a broodmare band of around 80 mares, 40 of their own and 40 for clients. Situated in the Odenwald region outside Frankfur t, at 130 hectares the stud is large by German standards. Heinz Weil’s motto right from the star t was to “respect and maintain nature’s laws and cycles”. Stud Manager Ralf Kredel explains that their aim is therefore to keep things as natural as possible and to “mess” as little as possible with the youngsters. Despite being situated in the mountains, their weanlings are raised outside even in winter, with only open shelters available, should they choose to get out of the weather. Etzean is also famous for keeping a mare all year round with each of their stallions. While this is closer to how a herd functions in the wild, it is something that few breeders would dare to do or be allowed to do by their insurers. Kredel explains that they choose a barren mare each year to stand with the stallion that she is to be covered

by. The mare then lives with the stallion, gets covered by him and stays with him until foaling time, when her place is taken by another barren lady. Currently Etzean stands three stallions, namely Areion (GER), Amaron (GB) and Lord of England (GER), a son of Dashing Blade bred by a client. The stud’s policy is to mostly use their own stallions and indeed Monami is a daughter of Sholokhov, a past sire at Etzean. Only the stud’s top mares venture for th to visit outside sires and hence Monami’s visit to Sea The Stars, that resulted in the salestopping, chestnut filly. Currently Monami has an Amaron colt at foot and is back in foal to Kingman (GB). Kredel confirms that he thought she would go for around €200,000, as she had been looked at by several buyers during the week, but even he did not quite expect her to wear the crown of salestopper. Following in the footsteps of Etzean bred horses such as world champion Manduro (GER) and German Horse of the Year 2009, Night Magic (GER), Lot 76 will definitely be one to watch in the future.

TIME TO CHANGE CHANGING YOUR HORSE’S D I E T S U C C E S S F U L LY
A
By Hannah Botha RCL (Technical advisor Equus and Epol)
t some stage all horse owners will find it necessary to change a horse’s diet for reasons which might include changes in temperature, season, stage of growth or pregnancy and change in performance level. When changing a horse’s diet, however, great care should be taken both to avoid any digestive upsets and to give the new feed a chance to work. Whether it is the concentrated feed, the hay or the pasture that is to be changed, colic or Laminitis could occur if the diet change is not planned properly and spread over a period of time. Fermentation occurs in the hindgut of the horse and it is not only complex but also a very delicate process. Fermentation is key for optimal digestion of feedstuffs and ultimately the production of energy. This process can be disrupted by multiple factors, change being one of them. There are billions of protozoa, fungi and bacteria living within the horse’s gut, and it is these Microbes that are responsible for the fermentation of carbohydrates into volatile fatty acids for energy. If a badly planned change of diet occurs it can “shock” or change the population of these microbes, the rate of fermentation and thus the by-products of fermentation. In addition, disrupting normal fermentation can lead to rapid changes in the pH (acidity) of the intestine, which can further negatively impact on the normal microbial population and the whole digestive process. To maintain the delicate balance in the gut, the following guidelines may help when altering a diet: SIMPLY ALTERING THE AMOUNT FED Any increases/decreases in the amount of concentrate given to a horse should be added/removed at approximately 200 grams per day (not more than ¼ kg) until the desired amount of concentrate is reached. WHEN INTRODUCING A NEW TYPE OF HAY OR NEW BRAND OF CONCENTRATE The new hay or concentrate should replace the old feed at a rate of 25 percent every other day, taking a total of 7-14 days for the

new feed to be fully implemented. Feed intake, or eagerness to consume the diet, may decrease during this changeover period. If this occurs, more time may be needed for the horse to adjust to the new feed. CHANGE IN PASTURE When a horse is turned out on new pasture all day, especially where the pasture is lush and green, the time on pasture should be gradually increased to avoid overeating. The time on pasture should be increased by one hour each day for four to five days. Some horses take more time to adjust to dietary changes than others. It is important thus to monitor the horse’s eating habits and health status carefully during this time. CHANGING OVER FROM HIGH MOLASSES CONTAINING DIETS Unfortunately, a large percentage of available products on the market today are composed mainly of bran and molasses. Although molasses is an important and very palatable source of energy, it should always be used sparingly. It is important to keep in mind that diets focused on gut health or on particular diet related conditions (such as Laminitis, Insulin Resistance, Tying up), will normally contain less molasses than other concentrates available, and therefore it might take a little longer than normal to adapt horses to a new diet with less “sweetness”. In the long run though, it is worth the effort to adapt horses gradually to the new diet until they are used to it. CHANGING TO A HIGH FAT DIET As with all new feed additions, horses should be slowly introduced to the added oil/fat. Start with a small amount 20-60ml increasing by 20-40ml each week until the desired level is found. This may sound slow but it allows the horse’s digestive system to adapt to the fat, which will reduce the likelihood of soft manure, a typical, though usually transient, effect of using oil. It is important to note that complete metabolic adaptation to a high fat diet has been shown to be achieved in 11 weeks, but not in 6 weeks (Custalow et al., 1993).Therefore, keep in mind that it will take a while before all the positive benefits of a high fat diet are noticeable.

FEED BY WEIGHT NOT VOLUME When changing to a new concentrated feed it is also important to ensure that the correct weight of the new feed and the feed scoop used are aligned. It is very important to ensure that horses are fed the correct portion of food by weight, and not by volume! All feeds have different densities and thus do not weigh the same. Feeding instructions are also always given as a percentage of body mass so it is very important to establish the exact weight in kg of the horse, as well as how many kg the scoop holds of the specific product being fed. Failing to establish the correct weight of the portion being fed can lead to considerable over- or underfeeding of the horse especially when changing to a new concentrate. Overfeeding can lead to the horse becoming obese which will take time to rectify but, more seriously, it can also cause severe colic. Underfeeding, especially performance horses, may lead to a lack of energy or even severe weight loss. While this can be rectified fairly quickly in healthy horses by feeding the correct quantities, often time is lost because the reason for weight loss or low energy levels is often sought elsewhere first. For example, the owner feels the product is not working when in actual fact it is the incorrect kg amount. Always begin by checking that the horse is fed the right amount by weight. The table below illustrates just how easily the incorrect amount can be fed especially in a stable yard where more than one product is used: A CONTAINER HOLDING 5 LITRES OF WATER WILL 64

HOLD APPROXIMATELY: 1.5 kg of high fibre meal product. 3.0 kg of a typical pelleted horse Cube. 2.9 kg of crushed maize. 1.6 kg of wheaten bran. 0.6 kg of milled Lucerne. 6.5 kg of molasses syrup. This clearly demonstrates how easily one can either over- or underfeed by considerable margins. This does not mean one cannot use the 5 litre bucket method to feed your horses. Simply weigh out the appropriate amount of concentrate and mark the bucket with a permanent marker to know up to where to fill it each time. This technique allows one to standardize the amount of concentrate being fed. Weighing the feed each time, however, is by far a more accurate way. This further explains why the person responsible for feeding at a yard might be surprised should the horse change from a pelleted product to a muesli style product. Visually, it may appear that the new feed is being fed at nearly twice the rate of the previous one, but evaluating by weight shows clearly that this is not the case. SOME HORSES MAY SELF-REGULATE AFTER CHANGING FEED Some horses, especially those in more intensively managed yards, those changing from a low fibre diet, and those in poor condition may initially rush their food in anticipation and may actually eat
more than what they need . After a few weeks, however, the horse will generally start to slow their eating in order to regulate their body condition, and some may even leave a proportion of food once full. Often this is mistaken for not “enjoying the food” anymore. Reducing the amount of food at this point will usually result in the horse once again eating all the food given.Alternatively, allowing the horse the entire evening to eat his feed will often also result in all food being consumed. Horses are designed to eat little and often, so a slow eater is never a bad thing. ALLOW HORSES TIME TO CHEW In the natural environment, horses will spend around 16 to 18 hours a day eating. If a horse is experiencing fewer turnouts due to weather, injury, or lack of pasture, it is important to keep them chewing for as long as possible to support their behavioural and digestive health. BEHAVIOUR AND CHEWING As mentioned above, wild horses are accustomed to eating for long periods of time and have a psychological need to chew. Once domesticated, however, humans imposed a more routine “meal” schedule rather than allowing the horse to trickle feed as nature intended. It is thought that this has influenced the development of stereotypical behavioural issues such as wood chewing or cribbiting. Studies have shown that the type of food presented can influence the amount of time the horse spends INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

chewing. For example 1 kg hay is chewed around 3,400 times in about 40 minutes but 1 kg oats is only chewed around 850 times in 10 minutes. Thus, more fibre requires longer chewing time thus keeping the horse occupied for longer. DIGESTIVE HEALTH AND CHEWING When it comes to overall digestive health, a good set of teeth is essential for the horse to get the most from his feed. This is because chewing helps break up food into smaller particles, allowing the essential nutrients inside to be more readily available. Research has revealed that feeding fibre results in larger, slower jaw movements and more even dental wear, whereas feeding high levels of concentrates can increase the likelihood of irregularities such as the overgrowth of enamel or sharp edges. Another essential part of chewing is that it produces saliva. Saliva not only helps to lubricate the passage of food into the oesophagus but also contains natural bicarbonates that buffer acidity in the stomach. A horse’s stomach produces acid continually; saliva, however, is only produced when eating. Thus, in order for a horse to “buffer” his stomach acid, it needs to have the opportunity to chew. This protection is particularly important for the squamous or non-glandular lining of the stomach, where gastric ulceration is most common because saliva is one of the few protection mechanisms this area has. To maximise saliva production it is important to provide ad lib fibre, as fibre provides more chewing time and thus more saliva.

TOP TIPS • Make the most of good quality forage and feed a high fibre ration. • Feed little and often to mimic trickle feeding. • Double-net hay for greedy eaters to slow the rate of intake. • Add chopped fibre feeds if feeding mixes and cubes because adding fibre slows the rate of intake, increasing eating time. • Do not be concerned if a horse takes a long time to eat. If this interrupts routines such as turnout or exercise, feed the bigger meal in the evening when there is time for the horse to eat slowly

he first time I met this beautiful boy something inside me stirred. Perhaps the little girl who fell in love with horses so many years ago, but I knew I wanted to do something special with him. Not for a client this time, but for myself. When the blossoms came into bloom this year I knew it was the perfect opportunity. Zorro is a 12 year old Friesian gelding, owned by Kim Cooper who has entrusted him to my friend Jessica Manig. Having had a rough past, he came to her with many issues, lacking in trust and very defensive in nature. He has been with Jess for a year now and has slowly but surely come out of his shell and blossomed into this extraordinary horse that we now fondly call Robert (De Niro). I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed creating them and I wonder if you too can see the gentle soul that lies beneath.
