The Cape Summer Racing Season kicks off and Liesl King takes a look at some of the season’s returning stars and up-andcoming youngsters on page 32. Liesl also spent some time at the Goodwood racecourse, home of the “Duel on the Downs”, to witness a clash between two of the most powerful racing operations in the world, Coolmore and Godolphin, albeit in a torrential downpour, on page 16. Enable on her way to victory

MAGNIFICENT ENABLE

“ T H E B E S T F I L LY I H AV E E V E R R I D D E N ” Enable (GB) – she is only three years old and yet the beautiful bay filly with the long ears is already a household name across the globe. Enable bounced onto the scene in June this year with an emphatic victory in the Group 1 Investec Oaks, where she powered clear to win by five, despite the race being run in extreme conditions. A month later she lined up in the Group 1 Irish Oaks, where she delivered a repeat performance, this time winning by five and a half lengths.

COVER FEATURE wo weeks later Enable was in action again. This time, stepping out in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, against the boys at Ascot. Again the filly, with regular rider Frankie Dettori in the saddle, came home lonely, winning by four. Three Group One victories in two months is a big ask of any three-year-old, colt or filly and yet Enable and her trainer John Gosden was far from done. A month later Enable completed the trifecta winning the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks again by five lengths.The filly was now the firm favourite for the most famous race in the world, the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly. Gosden however was going to take it one day at a time.The Arc was still six weeks away and the astute trainer knew just how much could go wrong in the space of six weeks. Yet Enable is not only blessed with an extraordinary athletic ability and gorgeous looks, she also has an incredible temperament and as the weeks rolled by the filly stayed fit, healthy and happy. The clear favourite with the punters, Enable however, had not yet been entered in the Arc and in order to run, she would have to be supplemented at a cost of €120,000. Four days before the Arc, on the 27th of September, Enable was finally supplemented for the race.

At the 400m mark Dettori decided that he had been patient long enough. He pulled the filly out and Enable, delighted to be given her head, cruised past the leaders in a matter of strides. Dettori gave her three taps on the rump, indicating that the time had come to stretch out and the filly flew. In scenes reminiscent of the mighty Frankel, Enable, flying over the soft track, effortlessly flying over the soft track, extended away from the field. Now Dettori is a showman of note, known for his standing-in-thestirrups celebrations and his trademark flying dismount.Yet on the flying filly, he was crouched low, head down, leaving the limelight to the magnificent filly as she annihilated the opposition. Gosden is not known as a man of few words, yet his tribute to his star was as eloquent as it was succinct. “She is magnificent! “She is a majestic queen of a filly!” Gosden also revealed the huge pressure that comes with having a star such as Enable in your care. “It has been hellish,” he said. “You watch the filly every moment and are in danger of wearing down a path from your back door to her box. It’s the expectation, so when she wins like that it’s a relief and you can really enjoy it. She can cruise and then put in a massive turn of foot. Her acceleration kills off a field. She’s done it before and done it today. She has a great mind on her as well. She enjoys her training and like Treve she has big ears.We like big ears” he adds with a smile.

In hindsight, one wonders why Gosden waited so long. He already knew what the rest of us only suspected, that he had the filly of a lifetime residing in his stables. For on Sunday, the 1st of October 2017, Enable came round the home bend tucked in behind the O’Brien pair of Order Of St George and Idaho. In the familiar green, pink and white colours of Prince Khalid Abdullah, Dettori was sitting quietly in the saddle, with the filly on a tight hold and moving easily.

Arguably the most famous jockey in the world, Dettori has ridden many a superstar. Most recently piloting another Gosden trained star, Golden Horn to victory in the 2015 Arc. Yet Dettori rates Enable as the best filly he has ever ridden. “C’est magnifique. She is the best filly I have ever ridden. Usually in an Arc something happens, but it was so smooth and so effortless. I was quite shocked. Then you ask yourself, ‘I’m not actually dreaming? This is true, isn’t it?’ I was quite emotional and able to enjoy it because it happened so easily,” Dettori said.

The big question now is whether the daughter of Nathaniel will race on as a four-year-old. It is quite clear that Gosden and Dettori would dearly like to see her take on the world as an even better and stronger four-year-old. The decision however lies with her owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe was justifiably cautious. “We’ll see how she is and I’ll talk to Prince Khalid in good time – but there’s no hurry for that decision. She is fine this morning and yesterday was a very special day, as a victory it was hugely important to us,” he said. “It was Frankie’s fifth Arc, Prince Khalid’s fifth Arc and Enable’s fifth Group 1 win. It was a tremendous performance”, he added

One thing is certain; Enable has done more than enough this year and will now have a well-deserved rest. Prince Khalid sportingly raced star mare Midday until she was five and even Frankel, the greatest runner of recent times was allowed to share his brilliance with the world for an extra year. So one can but hope that the Prince allows Enable to return to the track in 2018 and if she does, make sure you are in Longchamp for the running of the 97th Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe!

2017 - ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR BSA!

Bloodstock South Africa enjoyed yet another wonderful season in 2017 when their graduates continued to make waves.

istory was made at the 2017 National Yearling Sale when a Var filly, consigned by Varsfontein Stud under the name of Goddess Var, was knocked down to Shadwell South Africa for R5 000 000.This was a new record price for a yearling sold at the TBA complex in Germiston. The record breaking Goddess Var was produced by Fidelity, a winning daughter of Captain Al and former Equus Champion Promisefrommyheart, herself the dam of stakes winners Master Of My Fate and Justthewayyouare.

The 2017 NationalYearling Sale also saw a Silvano colt, consigned by Lammerskraal Stud, fetch R4 000 000 and no fewer than 19 yearlings fetch R1 million plus. Despite being held in a very tough economic market, the National Sale once again proved a highlight of the South African thoroughbred auction calendar. The top lot sold fetched double the price of the highest yearling sold at the 2016 sale, and the average, given the economic climate, held up reasonably well during the sale.

The Equus Awards for the past season also highlighted the quality of thoroughbred sold off BSA auctions. Legal Eagle, who has been a wonderful poster-boy for Bloodstock South Africa, won his second straight title as Horse Of The Year and also scored repeat titles as Champion Miler and Champion Older Male. Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm and raced by Mayfair Speculators, Legal Eagle, a R425 000 buy from the 2013 National Sale, has now a remarkable six Equus Awards to his credit. Other recent Equus Award winners to have been sold off BSA sale include the remarkable Hermoso Mundo (Champion Stayer), a R200 000 buy from the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, who recorded a unique treble during the season when winning all of the G3 Gold Bowl, G3 SABC Gold Vase and G3 eLan Gold Cup. The Mauritzfontein bred gelding has earned over R1.5 million and he won’t stop here!

Bred by Mauritzfontein, Marinaresco, who has now earned in excess of R5 million, was a R1.3 million purchase from the 2014 National Yearling Sale.The son of champion sire Silvano also made amends for finishing a close, and arguably unlucky, second in the 2016 Vodacom Durban July when beaten only by a poor draw and The Conglomerate.

Unbeaten filly Lady In Black was named Equus Champion 2YO Filly –the Willem Engelbrecht JR bred filly having cost R1.1 million at the 2016 National Yearling Sale –after a season which saw the Dynasty filly win all three of her starts including the G1 Thekwini Stakes. She looks destined for classic glory!

The list of Grade One races won by Bloodstock South Africa sold horses during 2016-2017 is an impressive one. BSA graduates won all of the G1 Vodacom Durban July, G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, G1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, G1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, G1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes, G1 Princess Charlene Of Monaco Empress Club Stakes, G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge, G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, G1 Thekwini Stakes, G1 Premiers Champion Stakes, G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, and G1 Mercury Sprint last season and look poised for another big year in 2017-2018.

Bull Valley, who was named Horse Of The Season at the 2017 KZN Racing Awards, was another great advert for BSA with the Toreador gelding winning both the G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint and G1 Mercury Sprint, while the ever game Varsfontein Stud bred Captain America, a R400 000 buy from the 2012 National Sale, pushed his earnings past R4.9 million this season. First BSA sale to take place in 2018 will be the CapeYearling Sale, to be held once again at the majestic Mistico Equestrian Centre, which will take place on Feburary 25th. The Cape regional sale has certainly made its mark in recent years, with recent high-class graduates including such top-class stakes winners as Doosra, Gold Standard, Green Pepper and Hack Green, and buyers are sure to find more gems in the 2018 Cape sale. South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier yearling sale, the 2018 National Yearling Sale, is scheduled to be held in Germiston on April 24-26th next year, while the ever popular KZN Yearling Sale will once again take place, just before the 2018 Vodacom Durban July, on July 5th and 6th. South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best value for money sale, and regular producer of champions, the National Two Year Old Sale has been pencilled in for the 16th and 17th of August next year. part from views that stretch from the Isle of Wight in the south to the rolling green hills of the Sussex Downs in the north, the Goodwood Estate, sprawling over 11,500 acres, is a magical place in itself. A golf course winds its way through the Estate’s ancient forests, a motor racing track where the annual Festival of Speed is held, an airfield, acres of farm land and in the centre of it all the magnificent Goodwood House, home of the 11th Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Aubigny.

monsoon hit Goodwood. Of course it was on the day that the most important feature of the Festival, the G1 Sussex Stakes was due to be run. Known colloquially as the Duel on the Downs, it is a race that always seems to throw up two star performers, ready to fight it out. The initial “Duel on the Downs” in 2011 was between a young unbeaten Frankel and the leading older miler Canford Cliffs. Frankel prevailed with ease and his dominance was such that the 2012 Sussex Stakes heralded no duel, just an exhibition gallop by the mighty colt. Since then Dawn Approach and Toronado in 2013 and Toronado and Kingman in 2014 treated eager spectators to fascinating duels down the Goodwood home straight. Solow, arguably the world’s best miler emulated Frankel in 2015, coming home lonely, while 2016 saw another epic fight to the bitter end in which The Gurkha defeated 2000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold.

The Goodwood racecourse is truly the most beautiful course in England, well that is if the weather gods play along. Yet even when the occasional sea fret blows in, cloaking the course in a damp, cold mist, it is just a mere inconvenience. Visibility may be almost zero, but the track stays good and the 2017 was billed not only as the Duel on the Downs, but also racing fast and furious! This year however, was a completely as a clash between the two most powerful racing operations different kettle of fish as what can only be described as a in the world, Coolmore and Godolphin. camp, Churchill, the duel 2000 Guineas winner was ready to take on his year older rival, the Godolphin owned Ribchester, trained by Richard Fahey. Ribchester had a heady start to 2017, winning the G1 Lockinge Stakes, before setting a new track record in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. The two had never met and a battle of epic proportion was expected. Then the rain came down. Wherever his horses are racing, Churchill’s trainer Aidan O’Brien can always be found walking the course in the hours leading up to a big race and Goodwood was no exception. Well except for the fact that the worst rainstorm in memory was lashing Goodwood. High winds and horizontal driving rain tore flags from their poles and sent sodden racegoers scurrying for cover, while the walkways around the grandstand quickly turned into deep lakes. In this terrible weather, O’Brien could be seen walking the course. Anywhere else racing would probably have been cancelled as the course turned waterlogged and the going changed to heavy in a matter of minutes. The English however are made

of sterner stuff and the announcement came that racing would proceed, followed shortly by another even more shocking announcement. Churchill had been withdrawn. Now Churchill’s home country of Ireland is a damp place indeed and O’Brien’s horses are all very capable of handling a wet track. So the decision to withdraw for the safety of the horse, gives an idea of just how dire the conditions were. Would Ribchester follow? Fahey‘s belief in his horse was absolute and he bravely announced that the multiple Group 1 winner would take his place in the starting lineup. It was to be a decision that Fahey would regret forever. Coming down the hill and into the home straight, Ribchester was comfortably in the lead. In the closing stages however, the deteriorating conditions starting taking their toll. Ribchester started faltering and up on his outside ranged Here Comes When, a seven-year-old Group 2 winner ridden by Jim Crowley. Here Comes When relished a cut in the ground and here on the sodden Goodwood track he was in his element. Champion that he is, Ribchester fought back bravely, but Here Comes When still had a neck on him

as the line flashed by. A great horse squarely beaten by the conditions. A sodden end to one of the season’s great races. Glorious Goodwood may have been hit by the worst weather in its history during the week, but by Friday order was restored. The sun came out; the gale force winds died down, allowing the ladies to dress in their blue and white outfits, instead of their wellies and macs, for the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Best dressed competition. Over the years the racegoers have gradually taken the blue and white theme on board and while the entire course wasn’t quite decked in blue and white, it was pretty close. Friday also featured the running of the G3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Stakes over 1400m. 1400m is a specialist event at which only certain horses excel and French trainer Francois Rohaut seems to have a stable full of them. Dettori however, was uncharacteristically winless so far at the Festival, with many a close finish, but no winning skywards leap towards the waiting crowd. Despite a dash for the line by Eternally (GB),Tomyris (GB) and even former South African runner Same Jurisdiction (SAF), the result was never in any doubt. With just over 400m left to go Dettori sent Al Jazi into the lead and the mare extended away from her rivals to win by 1.25 lengths with Eternally in second and Tomyris in third, a further head back. The roar as the popular jockey entered the winner’s circle was deafening. Dettori did not disappoint and despite his recent troubles with a persistent shoulder injury, he flew skywards in style, followed by a happy dance once safely back on the ground. A delighted Dettori is indeed a sight to behold. While Dettori, Rohaut and Al Shaqab Racing celebrated, Elena Rowland was crowned the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Best Dressed Lady! Elena and her partner will be jetted off to South Africa in January 2018 to attend the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Lets just hope the weather is better!

While those machinations continue behind the scenes, Gun Runner keeps right on working and thriving.

Although stud plans for the colt to retire to co-owner Three Chimneys Farm are pending, they might just remain pending.

Returned to Churchill Downs from Saratoga, he breezed on September 24 and was due to travel to California at the end of the month to continue to prepare for the Classic for trainer Steve Asmussen, who reflected after the Woodward that the colt had “proved his worth.”

“Historically, I usually run them on when they’re older, so we’ll just see what happens in the Classic and we’ll go from there,” said Winchell. “Obviously, if the Pegasus happens and it’s a big purse, and Dubai is a big purse, it makes a big difference in the decision.” There is some question about the Pegasus race since a dozen stakeholders must each contribute $1 million in order to make the race happen, with The Stronach Group adding in the remaining $4 million.

At this stage, it’s clearly plausible that Gun Runner’s worth, in every sense, could soar even higher. He already has banked an enviable $5,738,500, including the $2 million he earned in Dubai for finishing second. But if he were to win the Classic, the Pegasus and the World Cup, he could conceivably increase his total earnings to a staggering $23 million.

The race is scheduled for January 27 at Stronach Group-owned Gulfstream Park, but the required number of participants had not yet committed the funds as of mid-September, according to those involved, and deadlines have been extended until late this year.

That may be a lot of “ifs,” but assuming Gun Runner prevailed in that lucrative trio, he would become racing’s all-time leader, even surpassing horses that run in Japan for the world’s largest purses, such as Triple Crown winner Orfevre, who earned $19,005,276. INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Asmussen is not thinking about numbers, and the rest of the Gun Runner camp also is keeping its own sort of radio silence on predictions or goals past the Breeders’ Cup Classic and another tangle with Arrogate. In both their previous encounters, Arrogate has won convincingly.

But this is a new Gun Runner, one now rated the third best horse in the world at 127 behind only Arrogate in his Dubai performance and Australia’s Winx at 132. And this is now a new scenario, with Gun Runner ascending and Arrogate struggling.

“Absolutely,” O’Rourke added when asked if Arrogate was on track for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Garrett O’Rourke, the American manager for owner Juddmonte Farms, reported during the Keeneland yearling sale that Arrogate is doing well. The colt worked a brisk five furlongs for trainer Bob Baffert following the Pacific Classic on September 26.

If he can return to his Dubai form, it is difficult to imagine any horse defeating Arrogate. And if he wins his second consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic, Arrogate will become the first horse in history to gallop past the $20 million barrier.

2017 CAPE SUMMER SEASON Torrential downpours followed by beautiful sunny days, the heady scent of blossoms and racing returning to Durbanville means just one thing, spring is in the air and a new Cape racing season is about to start. The season kicks off with the running of the R250, 000 G3 Matchem Stakes and the R250, 000 G3 Diana Stakes, both over 1400m, at the newly resurfaced Durbanville racecourse on the 7th of October.

oth races have attracted some hardhitting contenders with Guineas master, Dean Kannemeyer sending out his unbeaten Western Winter colt Last Winter in the Matchem Stakes, while Grade 1 winner Just Sensual takes her place in the Diana Stakes. The Kannemeyer-trained Capetown Noir, now doing stallion duty at Summerhill Stud, also made his seasonal debut in the Matchem before going on to win the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Kannemeyer however cautions that while he thinks very highly of Last Winter, the colt will need to “earn his stripes” before he will be aimed at any of the Cape features.

G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Just Sensual steps out in the Diana Stakes as her season’s opener. Ramsden is faced with an enjoyable dilemma here as Just Sensual is as competitive sprinting as she is over the mile, giving her the options of either taking on the boys in the G1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m or competing against her own sex in the G1 Majorca Stakes over a mile. Ramsden reported that for now Just Sensual will start over the sprint distances, but that plans could change as the season progresses. The other interesting addition to the Matchem field is Glen Kotzen’s Gold Standard. Gold Standard won the Selangor Cup last year before a solid second in the G1 Cape Guineas behind William Longsword and a fourth in the Sun Met behind Whisky

Baron. Sadly the colt returned injured and has been off the track for nine months. A recent grass gallop at Kenilworth racecourse saw a superb looking Gold Standard going through his paces under Richard Fourie. Kotzen has indicated that Gold Standard is likely to follow the tried and tested route of the Green Point Stakes leading into the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, with the ultimate goal being the G1 Sun Met at the end of the Cape season. Three established stars who will also be following that same route are 2016 G1 Vodacom Durban July winner Marinaresco, G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge winner Captain America and Horse of the Year Legal Eagle. Legal Eagle will be defending his L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate crown for the third year running. Should he succeed, he will be just one victory short of matching the legendary Pocket Power’s four straight victories in what is considered to be the premier weight-for-age mile event in the country. The established stars won’t have it all their own way though. Coming up through the ranks are youngsters such as Edict of Nantes and Horizon. G1 Cape Investec Derby winner Edict of Nantes finished off the season with a flying third in the Vodacom Durban July and the Brett Crawford trained colt will be a strong

contender on the tried and tested route to possible Sun Met glory. The Candice Bass-Robinson trained Dynasty colt, Horizon, stepped up to his R5.2 million prize tag when comfortably winning the G3 Politian Stakes in January and followed that up with a third in the G1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville in June. According to Bass-Robinson, Horizon will follow the same path as Edict Of Nantes, but a start in the G2 Premiers Trophy over 1800m could also be included in the burly colt’s program. Of her youngsters, Bass-Robinson indicated that her only real standout at this point seems to be Dutch Philip. The son of Champion Sprinter What A Winter won the G3 Cape of Good Hope Nursery over 1200m at his last start and has only contested the sprint distances to date. According to BassRobinson she is going to step him up in distance in the Cape Classic (1400m) at the end of October and depending on how he handles that, a decision will be made as to whether he will be a Cape Guineas contender. Bass-Robinson also trains Nightingale, who finished a gallant fourth in the Vodacom Durban July last year. The now five-year-old mare will have either the Paddock Stakes over 1800m or the Majorca over 1600m as her main target for the season.

Another lady heading to Cape Town is the Dennis Drier trained Miss Frankel, a daughter of Champion Sprinter Val De Ra, who recently won her second start by four lengths. According to Drier there are no definite plans for the daughter of super sire Frankel yet. Miss Frankel will be accompanied by a classy pair of unbeaten three-year-olds, the colt Sand And Sea, who will be aimed at the Cape Guineas and the filly Lady in Black, who is likely to contest the Cape Fillies Guineas. Drier however is never without a sprinter or two in his ranks and he adds that Durban Dash winner Sommerlied is also travelling to the Cape to contest some of the upcoming sprints.

Last but certainly not least is a filly that recently won her first start. Why am I including her you may ask? Well she is trained by master tactician Dean Kannemeyer; she is by Champion sire Dynasty and she trashed a field of thirteen runners over the Scottsville 1750m, winning by four. Her name is Hashtagyolo and Kannemeyer considers her a very smart staying filly. So do not be surprised if she pops up in a feature or two during the season. Established stars, youngsters with big reputations and the odd newcomer sneaking in under the radar; what an exciting Cape Summer Season to look forward to.

EQUUS AWARDS 2017 THE WINNERS AND THEN SOME

The highlight of the South African racing scene, the annual Equus Awards, where honour and glory is bestowed in ten racing categories, is an eagerly awaited affair by owners, trainers and breeders alike. Receiving an Equus award is akin to receiving an Oscar. A beautiful trophy to adorn the mantelpiece and your equine’s achievement printed in bold black in sales catalogues for all to see. With categories ranging across all age groups, sexes and distances, these awards are as hotly contested as they are debated.

016 saw the supremely talented four-year-old Legal Eagle sweep the boards at the Equus Awards. Top horses often garner awards from a young age on. Yet Legal Eagle only burst onto the scene as a four-year-old during the 2015/2016 season. In an astounding display of sheer class, the son of Greys Inn won the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, the G1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes and the G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge. Legal Eagle had conquered the 2015 G1 SA Derby as a three-year-old, but all that victory earned him was two Equus nominations. Now, one season later, three Group 1’s painted a whole different picture and Legal Eagle walked away with the titles of Champion Older Horse, Champion Miler and the ultimate award, the title of South African Horse of the Year. Many doubted that the feat could be repeated in 2017. Legal Eagle, now five, had other ideas. A repeat

performance, why not? He casually strolled home unchallenged in the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the G1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, before going down by a short head to Deo Juvente in the G1 Premier’s Champions Challenge. And with those feats the galloping bay will join the mighty Pocket Power as the only horses to win the same three Equus titles, including the Horse of the Year title, in two consecutive years. It may have been a second round of Champion Older Horse, Champion Miler and South African Horse of the Year titles, but trust me, second time round was all the sweeter for his owner Markus Jooste and his trainer Sean Tarry. There was more joy on Equus night when Carry On Alice was announced as Champion Older Female and Champion Sprinter. The star sprinter astonishingly did not received a single Equus award in her first three years of racing. Carry On Alice however, made up for all those years of mere nominations by promptly collecting two trophies at once and her connections’ celebrations once the announcement was made, pretty much raised the roof.

Alice, as she is affectionately known by her owners Chris van Niekerk, Dr Jill Warner and John Koster, won her first Group 1 at the tender age of two, when she trounced the boys in the G1 SA Nursery winning by 2.5 lengths. The 2017 winner of that race, Mustaaqeem (AUS), earned the title of Champion Two Year Old Colt for his victory. Carry On Alice was not so lucky and her stunning victory earned her a mere nomination in the category of Champion Two Year Old Filly in 2014. 2015 saw Carry On Alice win the G1 SA Fillies Sprint and in 2016, she again trounced the boys coming home lonely in the G1 Computaform Sprint. Yet neither effort was deemed good enough to bestow the title of Champion Sprinter upon the gutsy mare. So Alice lived up to her name and carried on. Well if one Group 1 wasn’t going to cut it then perhaps two would. January 2017 saw her flying home late against the boys, to add the G1 Cape Flying Championships trophy to her collection and in May she proved her superior sprinting abilities one last time when cantering home in the G1 SA Fillies Sprint. With motherhood beckoning, the mighty Carry On Alice had come to the end of her racing career. Again she earned several Equus nominations, but by now her owners had stopped believing that their star would ever receive the recognition she so deserved. Imagine their surprise and delight when Carry On Alice was announced as 2017 Champion Older Filly/Mare. Yet it was the title of Champion Sprinter that had been denied her so often and that she so richly deserved. Do fairy tales come true or was it too much to hope for? Apparently they do. There was a river of tears when Carry On Alice was finally announced as the 2017 Equus Champion Sprinter. Their darling, the gutsy daughter of Captain Al, who had given them so much joy for so long, had finally done it. It had taken blood, sweat, lots of tears, incredible highs and incredible lows, but Carry On Alice was the Equus Champion Sprinter at last. There were other great winners on the night, but for Legal Eagle and Carry On Alice it simply doesn’t get any better than that.

EXTRAORDINARY: SECRETARIAT, CHENERY FONDLY REMEMBERED

IT WAS A TIME OF STRIFE, A TIME OF TEARS.

he year 1973 still yields haunting memories of Vietnam, of Watergate, and of massive spikes in the cost of oil. Around the world, there was the Yom Kippur War and disturbing headlines about Irish Republican Army bombs and Basque terrorists.

The Exorcist terrified moviegoers while Pink Floyd released The Dark Side of the Moon. And then was the red flame that seared across the

landscape, burning away some of the pain and fearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the very embodiment of uplifting glory. Secretariat. Like few other racehorses ever have done, Secretariat ignited the public imagination. Barreling through the Triple Crown as the first horse to sweep the elusive series in 25 years, the big, beautiful chestnut colt proved that even the most difficult challenges in an epoch of turmoil could be overcome.

And he did it all with a unique panache, setting stakes records in each of the three Classic races, although his Preakness Stakes time was not acknowledged until 2012. The Maryland Racing Commission officially changed the time 39 years after the race was run, noting problems with the original timing of the race while saluting the unparalleled performance of Secretariat.

“Mrs. Chenery exemplified the very best of our sport, serving as one of its most beloved and passionate ambassadors. She was a generous owner, tirelessly sharing the legacy of her great Triple Crown winner, Secretariat, with generations of fans that extended far beyond racing,” said Keeneland Chief Executive Officer Bill Thomason.

By his side every step of the way, which also was extraordinary for an era in which women typically were expected to recede into the background, was Helen “Penny” Chenery. Known as “The First Lady of Racing” in America, Chenery became almost as iconic as “Big Red” himself, and when she passed away on September 16 at age 95, the splendor of their run into history together was remembered with an unusual reverence.

Chenery herself did not seek the glory deflected by Secretariat, but she did devote herself to working ceaselessly to promote his legacy even in the years after his death from laminitis in 1989.

“Penny Chenery was a true pioneer in our sport and, on behalf of the women and men of the New York Racing Association, we mourn her loss and offer our condolences to the Chenery family,” said Chris Kay, chief executive officer of the New York Racing Association. Secretariat made his most memorable run down the long stretch at NYRA’s Belmont Park, flying home in the Belmont Stakes to cap his Triple Crown with a unforgettable 31-length margin of victory in world record time of 2:24 for the 1 ½ miles.

One of her most charming attributes was her fearless candor. Chenery openly conceded that she was “miscast” early in her life as a wife and mother of four children. She even revealed in a 2013 documentary film produced by her son that she had had an affair with Lucien Laurin, the trainer who conditioned both Secretariat and his stablemate Riva Ridge, who won the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. The affair went on during the year of Secretariat’s Triple Crown and just prior to Chenery’s divorce from John Tweedy.

“It may spoil my image,” Chenery told a Kentucky newspaper in discussing the affair with Laurin, who died in 2000, when the documentary was released.“I don’t know, and at this point I don’t care. The entire story of Chenery and Secretariat involved more than the usual elements of chance and drama. She was called in from her home with Tweedy in Colorado to oversee the Meadow Stable established by her father, Christopher Chenery, when he began to decline from Alzheimer’s disease. Although she had no experience running a racing stable or a breeding farm, she sought advice from Arthur B. “Bull” Hancock of Claiborne Farm, and Riva Ridge’s rise to become a multiple champion and Classic winner began to turn around the fading Meadow fortunes. Secretariat famously fell into her hands by the loss of a coin flip. The Phipps family’s Wheatley Stable, which owned the accomplished Claiborne-based stallion Bold Ruler, won that flip for the choice of foals produced by two Meadow mares bred to Bold Ruler. Chenery said losing the coin toss was a relief because she wouldn’t have known which foal to choose. With the decision made by the Phipps family, The Meadow Stable gained a colt who would grow into a legend.

While he did not go on to become a brilliant sire, Secretariat proved he was worth every penny. His blood lives on in the descendants of so many of today’s top runners through the globally prolific sire lines of A.P. Indy and Storm Cat, both of whom were produced by Secretariat mares. During his own time on the racetrack, Secretariat rose above all other racing champions, transforming into a phenomenon and even appearing on the cover of Time magazine after his Belmont triumph with the simple but apropos headline: Super Horse. “The country was in a blue mood,” Chenery recalled in later years. “It was the time of Watergate and the Nixon scandals, and people wanted something to make them feel good. This red horse with the blue-and-white blinkers and silks seemed to epitomize an American hero.” Chenery followed his lead and made herself into a hero for many causes, including the aftercare of Thoroughbred racehorses. Officers of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, which Chenery served soon after its creation as a vice president to the board of directors, paid special tribute to her.

“Penny made everyone feel welcome to be a part of the ‘once in a lifetime’ glow of Secretariat,” said TRF’s Diana Pikulski. “Better than anyone, she understood the depth of the emotional response that he ignited in his fans, no matter male or female, young or old. She allowed us all to own Secretariat and helped us to have the experience long after he was gone. We are all lifetime fans of racing because of it.” “She gave back totally,” added Linda Dyer, TRF’s Kentucky farm manager. “She knew what a gift that was given to her with Secretariat.” Chenery also served as the first woman president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, holding that position from 1976 through 1984, and she was president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. She also became one of the first women allowed as a member of The Jockey Club in America. However, she downplayed her pioneering positions. “I did all the things I did out of instinct,” Chenery said in a 2012 interview with The Atlantic magazine.“I was not trying to be a role model.” In reaching out to the public, Chenery created the Secretariat Vox Populi Award in 2010 to honor racing’s most popular horse as acknowledged by fans.

It is my hope that the Secretariat ‘Vox Populi’ Award will be an honor that reflects the heart and soul of racing and will help build upon the devotion the public has for a horse they love,” she said. Chenery also developed the Secretariat Foundation, which assists and supports various racing community charities. Often saying that Secretariat gave her the chance to become further involved in racing and use her voice since he could not speak, Chenery spoke out in favor of banning the use of drugs in racing and she also advocated for laminitis research. She was awarded the 2006 Eclipse Award of Merit for lifetime contributions to the Thoroughbred industry, and her story with Secretariat was turned into a major motion picture by Disney Studios, which cast Diane Lane as Chenery. While she dismissed the Disney portrayal of her as having had a mystical connection with Secretariat, she did say they had “mutual respect” for one another. “I’m going to miss him terribly,” she said when Secretariat died. “He was not only a champion racehorse but a cherished friend.” That sentiment is shared throughout the sport of racing about Chenery, who like her magnificent horse, cannot be replaced.

He is unfazed by yet another group gathering to pay him homage, and he gazes across his empire to see if something more interesting might await, such as the princesses of racing that have been entertaining him for months. his is the life of Deep Impact for about half of the year, when he is not performing his regular stallion duties during the busy Northern Hemisphere breeding season at the Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido.

He may be lunged or walked for a while to maintain his fitness and he may occasionally cover a mare on Southern Hemisphere time, but otherwise he leads a life of leisure in the months when he is not working to create the next generation of Japanese champions. When it comes to earning power in the horse racing universe, Deep Impact has no rival and has more than earned some relaxation time. He stands above all other sires globally by progeny earnings and remarkably has done so ever since the 147 registered members of his first crop turned four in 2012. “He is still in very good condition,” said Shadai Stallion Station spokesman Keisuke Miwa of the beautifully balanced Japanese Triple Crown winner who stands about 16 hands and moves like a panther. “When he was racing, he was quite a sensitive type of horse and sometimes he didn’t want to eat. Managing him isn’t easy, but he is doing well.”

While he is now 15, the son and heir to the legacy of American champion Sunday Silence shows no signs of slowing down, and he leads all other sires worldwide by progeny earnings again this season with over $38.7 million through mid-September. To put that number in perspective, his progeny earnings are about $20 million more than the total accumulated by the progeny of European leader Galileo and $22 million more than the sons and daughters of the late Unbridled’s Song have amassed, even including Arrogate’s $13 million from the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes and the Dubai World Cup. While his numbers are partially due to Japan offering the world’s most lucrative purse structure, Deep Impact also has benefited from Group 1 wins by his offspring in Dubai, Hong Kong,Australia and France as well as in Japan. He is the first Japanese sire to achieve such extensive international success, and no other horse in the world can claim more intercontinental superiority. Deep Impact’s rise to sovereignty has mirrored the trajectory of Japanese breeding overall. The Yoshida brothers—Teruya, Katsumi and Haruya—who own and operate the Shadai Stallion Station knew that in order to make Deep Impact’s stud career, they had to invest in quality

mares from other bloodlines since many of the top Japanese mares also descend from Sunday Silence. They invested more than $100 million in obtaining mares of the highest quality from the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and other major Japanese breeders have followed suit as far as their resources will take them.The rewards continue to roll in through Deep Impact’s offspring. Of Deep Impact’s 30 Grade/Group 1 winners, 22 have been produced by mares bred outside Japan. This year’s Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) winner Al Ain, for example, was delivered by Dubai Majesty,America’s champion female sprinter of 2010 and a daughter of Essence of Dubai. Katsumi Yoshida paid $1.1 million for Dubai Majesty in 2010 and she has produced four foals by Deep Impact, including Al Ain, a weanling filly, and a two-year-old colt named Danon Majesty. The juvenile colt was sold for $2.2 million to Masahiro Noda’s Danox Co. at the 2016 Japan Racing Horse Association (JRHA) select sale. This tale of one mare sums up the Yoshidas’ brilliantly successful strategy: buy top mares, breed them to Deep Impact, sell a foal

or two to pay for the mare, and then race or syndicate the other foals and make more money in addition to possibly shaping a future stallion or broodmare. Al Ain competes for Sunday Racing Co., which is the major racing operation affiliated with Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm. Another example of this winning approach is potential Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe contender Satono Diamond, the now fouryear-old Deep Impact colt out of Argentine Group 1 winner Malpensa, by Orpen. Satono Diamond triumphed in last year’s Group 1 Arima Kinen and Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger). Acquired by Katsumi Yoshida from previous owners, Malpensa also produced a colt by Deep Impact in 2016 that was sold as a foal at the JRHA sale that year for $2.7 million to Hajime Satomi, who races Satono Diamond. The American-bred Grade 1-placed Storm Cat mare Magic Storm, a $500,000 purchase at Keeneland by KatsumiYoshida, has produced Deep Impact’s Group 1 winning son Satono Aladdin and Group 1 winning daughter Lachesis. In 2014, a Deep Impact yearling colt out of Magic Storm was sold for $1.96 million at the JRHA sale. There are many other examples of this breeding blueprint

coming to fruition, including Princess Olivia, an $850,000 purchase by Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai Farm in 2005. Already the dam of Grade 1 winner Flower Alley in America, the Lycius mare went on to produce the Group 1-winning Deep Impact full brothers Spielberg and Tosen Ra. The Yoshidas continue to breed their very best mares to Deep Impact, including American Horse of the Year Azeri, a $2.25 million purchase in 2009 who has been covered by the stallion every year since 2012 and this year produced a colt. In 2013 and 2014, her colt foals sold for $2.352 million and $2.45 million respectively, with each topping the JRHA foal session.

Japanese stud book records show that Kissed by Angels also visited Deep Impact in 2016 and she produced a colt from that mating on February 7. Maybe previously delivered the now three-year-old filly Pavlenko and juvenile colt Saxon Warrior when bred to Deep Impact; Pavlenko won a maiden race for Aidan O’Brien at the Curragh in July, while Saxon Warrior has won both his starts including the Group 1 Beresford Stakes in September. Coolmore is not the only major breeding operation outside Japan to patronize Deep Impact.

Marie: Judging by the AllanBloodlines Twitter and Facebook pages, you have had a flurry of winners in South Africa and UK recently – does that signal some good value for the upcoming Cape Summer? David: I certainly hope so. In our Hintlesham Racing Group in the Cape there is no up-front cost or long period of waiting before full training – we cover those costs ourselves so we are hoping that a good number of people will come in during October and November to enjoy a busy and successful summer, all going well. Marie: They don’t have to pay up front to buy in? David: No not in this Hintlesham Racing Group. They are in the position of owners – on the racecourse, sharing stake money won 8% up to 25% each but with racing management on their behalf and detailed communication included. Unusually there is a share of sale proceeds if sold, so it is akin to leasing but with a lot more added into the package of enjoyment. Marie: Training fees are expensive. How much do people have to pay? David: For (say) 10% interest in four horses R 5 000 + VAT per month all up.

Marie: Wow – including everything? David: Yes unless good enough to travel to another centre but then he or she would probably have won plenty already. If a horse needs a break or a rest, the monthly cost pro rata will go down. In fact when a runner has done what he or she can and needs to retire, we take the horse out and either replace or reduce the costs pro rata. Marie: That’s amazing! You are really giving people a gentle time. David: It’s all about involvement in a sport with so many dimensions of enjoyment way beyond what is usually “marketed” in South Africa so we want to make it easier to be involved – whether for people who love racing or people who have never raced. This works really well for fillies who give great pleasure on the racecourse and at the training stables and have family associations that we can chat about in reports. The latest fillies now are a winner of three and Feature placed, two winners of one who lived through a grim Cape Winter and are looking great in their coats now, and a new girl who has had a couple of prep runs and needs a trip.

Marie: Some people want colts, do you do anything for them?

Marie: Racing is a social event on the racecourse, at the stables, or in close email contact. You have a deep involvement in the South African bloodstock industry – can people get even more involved that way?

Marie: How long have you been offering this kind of soft package? David: More than 10 years in South Africa and nearly 25 years in the UK. Here, we are in the Cape with 30 x Grade 1 winning trainer Vaughan Marshall who helps us make people welcome as well as being an excellent, caring trainer and a foodie with an expert palate for Sauvignon Blanc.. People from other provinces have joined us as well as people overseas – you don’t have to attend every race and we keep people closely informed. Although not in the Hintlesham colours, we have runners elsewhere –

David: As much or as little as they wish. Yes, we manage stallions and look after three dozen broodmares and all their babies, as well as working the sales. Add to that my involvement in AHS/Export activity and working on the yearling sales schedules, and people can learn, visit or debate as much as they like. It is a global sport and industry so we add that dimension as well whether people here want to get involved in depth or just like to hear about it. Being involved with a racehorse – and we do them four at a time – is to know a beautiful athlete who tries his or her heart out for you and is welcoming when you go to visit. You can punt if you like or don’t punt if you don’t want to but above all you get up close and personal with these fabulous creatures and are “in with a shout” at the races at the most reasonable cost we can manage.

International Racehorse Magazine spoke to this internationally recognised artist who is inspired by her love of nature and the passion her subjects evoke in her oil paintings

rowing up in Holland, what influenced you and shaped your future as an artist in your younger years and who or what would you say has been a major influence and inspiration? When I was growing up as a child, I lived in the centre of a city, but I was very fortunate to have parents that ensured I learnt about nature. We used to cycle and walk in the nature, visiting nature reserves to see wild birds and animals in their natural habitat. One of my first loves as a child was drawing with pencil; I spent lots of time drawing, animals mostly. When I met my partner Brian, we decided to look for a house and in 2002, we settled in a small German village just over the border from Holland. We found that we had settled in the middle of a preservation area for wild birds of prey. In that same year, I decided to become a full time artist, leaving my job at the NATO Base in Holland. In this little village where we live, surrounded by nature and wildlife, I find the inspiration I need to create my oil paintings. Here, I feel like I’ve gone back in time yet finally have come home and settled down. My partner Brian built a gallery for me; he is as passionate about my work as I am. He always motivates me to move forward and supports me with everything I do, especially with new projects. As I have grown as an artist, I still feel heavily influenced by my teacher Mr. Guust van den Noort, he was a Dutch old Master! He gave me a great gift; the confidence to paint, he always told me that I am a natural talent.This in turn gave me the will to develop my own technique. I am a perfectionist and I am never satisfied. I strive with each piece to get better, become the best artist I can be. Unfortunately, my teacher passed away, but I feel he is always with me. When

I need it, I just think of his last words to me ”…I believe in you and you will get there, just keep painting with your heart…”. Your subjects are predominantly animals, and horses seem to be a particular favourite of yours. How did this come about? I think that I first became involved and interested in horses when I saw the beautiful horses of my uncle, who bred horses at a farm in Holland, he also had, as I recall, one or two Arabians.Years later, one of my friends bought an absolutely stunning Arabian and I think it was then when I also fell in love with the Arabian horse. I love all horse breeds, but what I find most fascinating about Arabian horses is their raw beauty, words are not enough to describe what I feel when I am busy painting an Arabian horse! There is something special about the Arabian; their beauty and grace is overwhelming, the eyes… large and beautiful, the long arching neck and high tail carriage. I feel it’s energy when I paint such a unique horse. An Arabian horse promotes strength, intelligence, nobility, elegance and of course it’s glorious “floating trot”.

You have exhibited in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain which must have been a fascinating time for you. What were the highlights of your time spent there? In December 2011, I was a finalist in the art competition of the 3rd. International Festival of Falconry in Abu Dhabi (Al Ain), this was my first time in the UAE! In March 2014, I was invited to the Maraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ee in Bahrain to exhibit my work and where I was introduced to the King of Bahrain. My paintings were so passionately received, the response was overwhelming, that I felt it was tailor made to exhibit my paintings. It enabled me to demonstrate the true emotional engagement in my paintings. When I am painting, I can express my true emotional self in the work. I know I have been successful when I see that same depth of emotional response in the eyes of those who view my paintings. It was a wonderful experience to meet the King of Bahrain and present my work to him during the VIP opening and that he bought a few of my paintings for his collection.The response has been worldwide. Fortunately, my work has garnered a following and I have received a number of commissions.

Time and time again, I hear the same response, “Your paintings are alive”. I try and give the work light and depth, people want to not only be affected by them emotionally, but also want to physically touch the work itself. It has been humbling! Your studio must be a special place to inspire such creativity, where exactly are you based and do you have exhibitions planned or exciting commissions you are currently working on? As I mentioned earlier,my studio is based in a small village called Neugnadenfeld in Germany, still close to Holland, and this is where I find the inspiration I need to create my oil paintings. When I am not travelling to events, exhibitions or fairs, (incidentally where I find a great deal of my inspiration), you can find me in my gallery, where I can work peacefully - just painting! I am most at peace while listening to beautiful music or just the sounds of nature around me when I start to think about painting. At the moment, a part of my collection is on display in a gallery in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. I have several wonderful commissions now to work on (private collectors), and I am building up a collection in my gallery. My goal for next year is to continue to progress and explore new events/ exhibitions internationally! What has been your proudest or most rewarding achievement so far and what are your hopes and plans for the future? We hope it includes a visit to South Africa!

To be the artist I always wanted to be and to follow my passion. I took a risk when I gave up a career that I worked very hard to achieve. Being an international artist of some standing is a dream come true. Some of my successes have led me to travel and exhibit in places I never thought I would ever go to, like the 3rd International Festival of Falconry in Abu Dhabi (Al Ain) UAE representing the Netherlands with two of my paintings as a finalist in the art competition, and my invitation with two other artists to the Mara’ee in Bahrain in March 2014 was special too. While in Bahrain, I was delighted to hear that one of my oil paintings was selected for the David Shephard Wildlife Artist of the Year 2014 exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. My plan for the future is to build up a network of contacts and to be able to exhibit my work further and further around the world. I now have contact with China and hopefully will be able to exhibit my work there and I would love to return to the Middle East again to exhibit my work and to enjoy the atmosphere and warm hospitality of the people! Recently I have started to look for interesting Arabian horse shows, I found out that there are some really interesting shows held in Germany, but no doubt there are many more around the world. It would be a real pleasure for me if I was to be invited to attend one of your shows in South Africa and to be able to exhibit my work to such enthusiastic owners and breeders of horses.

f the heading hasn’t confused you completely, then rest assured, the story will. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. Our unusual tale begins at Gestüt Röttgen, a magnificent stud farm on the outskirts of Cologne in Germany. Some 250 hectares of valuable farmland is encompassed by an imposing wall, as high as it is long and with the only entry being through a well-guarded gatehouse. Hidden behind those walls is a lush green oasis of peace and tranquillity, where mares and foals graze, a magical space created by its owner, Peter Paul Mülhens, in 1924. So much so that when the track for the new high speed ICE train was destined to cross Röttgen’s paddocks, it was negotiated to rather send the train through a tunnel underneath the stud, than to disturb its peacefulness. Mülhens asked architect Ludwig Paffendorf to design the

stables, foaling barn and riding hall in the Renaissance style, incorporating the turquoise, gold and red colours of the famed 4711 perfume that Mr. Mülhens produced. From the outside, the buildings belong on any stud farm and it is only once you enter that its understated elegance becomes apparent. From oak panels decorated with wrought iron designs, vaulted wooden ceilings with sweeping arches and beautifully crafted oak stable doors to the cigar holder perfectly positioned at the entrance of the riding hall. Mr. Mülhens died in 1945 and his daughter Maria MehlMülhens, a passionate rider, made the stud her life’s work. She also took up residence in the Röttgen castle. Although not large by European standards, it is a beautiful building overlooking a magnificent garden. It is interesting that on an estate where each paddock is hemmed in by immaculately maintained hedges, the garden is allowed to sprawl unfettered into the forest beyond.The stud has around 30 mares gracing

its paddocks, while resident stallion, Melbourne Cup winner, Protectionist, rules the roost under the watchful eye of stud manager Frank Dorff. Yet it is in the training yard that we find what we have been searching for. Here behind sturdy oak doors reside 90 odd horses all trained by Röttgen’s resident trainer Martin Klug. As facilities go it is not too shabby. When the weather gets inclement, the strings exercise in the riding hall, but whenever possible they can be found on Röttgen’s personal training track. Situated in the forest across from the estate, it features a 2200m grass track, as well as a sand trotting track, enclosed on both sides by high hedges. And it is here at the magnificent Gestüt Röttgen that the subject of our story, a colt named Dschingis Secret resides and trains. By champion sire Soldier Hollow (GB) Dschingis Secret was bred by Gestüt Park Wiedigen and sold to Hong Kong based business man Horst Pudwill at the 2014 BBAG yearling sale for €200,00. Pudwill entrusted the colt into Martin Klug’s

care and Dschingis Secret took up residence at Gestüt Röttgen. Klug clearly knew he had something special on his hands, sending the young colt straight into in a Listed race in Hanover in May 2016, where Dschingis Secret finished a solid third. A month later Dschingis Secret again finished third, this time in a Group 2 in Cologne, but it was his next start in the Group 1 Deutsches Derby in Hamburg that would make him a household name across Europe. For all the wrong reasons. In a dramatic finish to the Deutsches Derby, Dschingis Secret was narrowly beaten into third. Isfahan (GER) ridden by Dario Vargiu winning by a head from Savoire Vivre (IRE) ridden by Freddy Tylicki. Both jockeys made excessive use of their whips and both received hefty fines and bans, but the matter did not end there. Pudwill was furious, claiming that as his jockey, Martin Seidl, did not break any whip rules, his horse should be declared the winner. Unable to persuade the stewards, Pudwill mounted an appeal and when that failed, he took the matter to court, arguing that the first two horses should be disqualified as both their jockeys broke the

er name is Winx and she is a revelation. Bred by the Camilleri family’s Fairway Thoroughbreds in New South Wales, Winx made her first significant public appearance at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast

Offered through the Coolmore Stud draft, as agent, Winx was a well admired youngster at the auction and her auctioneer Grant Burns said she had “great scope.” What no one knew was just what sort of scope!

On the market early in bidding, as low as $80,000, the Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl filly eventually was sold to the bid of Magic Bloodstock for $230,000. She was sold on the spot – with Magic Bloodstock’s Peter Tighe welcoming friends Debbie Kepitis and Richard Treweeke into the ownership. The ride experienced by the trio of owners has been incredible. Twice a winner at two, Winx showed ability as an early three-year-old winning at Group Two level and being twice Group One placed during the autumn. It was when she was sent north to the Queensland Winter Carnival that racegoers first got to realise just what the dark bay filly could be developing into.

On May 16, 2015, Winx turned in one of the finest winning performances of the season when she came from last in a field of 16 to win the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas under one of Sunline’s former jockeys Larry Cassidy. Cassidy said he’d never ridden a horse with such an amazing turn of foot and predicted huge things for the future.

Canada’s Sam-Son Farm Has Set the Gold Standard for Canadian Racing

he has been gone for ten years this summer. Walk the grounds at Sam-Son Farm in Milton, Ontario, Canada, however, and you will feel her presence everywhere. And see evidence of what she left behind. The late Dance Smartly was adored by thousands across North America throughout her 19 years. She was but one of many champions who have roamed the paddocks of this legendary farm located 25 miles (40 km) west of downtown Toronto. The sum of Sam-Son’s accolades and accomplishments is staggering. Induction of 14 members into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. An impressive 9 winners of Canada’s Horse of the Year. A total of 78 Sovereign Award recipients and 4 U.S. Eclipse Awards. Five Queen’s Plate trophies from Canada’s most prestigious race, and two Breeders’ Cup World Championships. And with Dance Smartly, Sam-Son acquired a Canadian Triple Crown champion and a member of the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame.

For 45 years, the story of Sam-Son Farm has been about a man, a family, a philosophy, and a love for Canadian-bred racehorses. Ernie As Canada celebrates its 250th anniversary of horse racing, many notables of the sport across the years, both equine and mortal, are being remembered. Few, however, have had greater influence and impact on Canadian racing than Ernest Lionel (Ernie) Samuel. Ernie was born into a family who in 1855 began Samuel, Son & Co. which, more than 160 years later, continues to be a leading metals and industrial products manufacturer, processor and distributor. Samuel grew up dreaming of applying the same family-owned and operated principles and dedication to the thoroughbred horse racing business. His history with the breed began initially with show jumpers. All the training, time and devotion was rewarded with a horse named Canadian Club. Winner of the 1967 Pan American Games Individual Jumping Gold Medal, Canadian Club also won Canada’s first equestrian Gold Medal the following year

at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Canadian Club’s rider would ultimately play a significant role in the early success of SamSon Farm. He was Jim Day and he would ride Samuel’s trained jumpers for Canada’s Olympic team until 1976 when he retired as a rider to take on the role of private trainer for the farm. In 1972, Sam-Son trainer Art Warner went to Canada’s Fort Erie Racecourse and claimed a horse named Takaring. The three-yearold chestnut colt would become the farm’s first stakes winner when he captured two that summer. Sam-Son had entered the thoroughbred racing world. Three years later in 1975, Ernie Samuel paid a visit to the sales at Woodbine and claimed two fillies. And Canadian horse racing changed forever. Foundation One was named No Class and the other Loudrangle.Their names are forever linked together in the history of Canadian racing. No horse and its given name were ever more inappropriately matched than was the case with No Class. With a name derived from the match of her sire Nodouble and her dam Classy Quillo, No Class was anything but. A multiple stakes-placed filly on the track, she was purchased by Ernie Samuel for $25,000 and became the greatest matron in Canadian history, producing four champions and establishing a foundation for most of Sam-Son’s success across the years. Her brilliance was rewarded in 1997 when she was inducted in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Like No Class, Loudrangle was also a stakes winner on the track who went on to capture Canadian Broodmare of the Year honors. Ernie Samuel believed successful breeding was created by building an impressive broodmare band, believing the mare played a vital role in the overall breeding equation. And with No Class and Loudrangle, Samuel walked the walk. From nine registered foals, Loudrangle produced Canadian champions Tilt My Halo and Ruling Angel and stakes winners Dancing with Wings, Tiffany 82

Tam, No Louder and Slew of Angels.Tiffany Tam became a stakes winner of more than $130,000 and moved on to her own successful breeding career. The other half of the dynamic duo, No Class, made an impact that is still reaping benefits today. She produced eight named foals, of which seven started and won. This included Canadian champions Grey Classic, Regal Classic, and the American Champion Turf Male of 1992, Sky Classic. Dave Whitford is Sam-Son’s Farm Manager.“The No Class family never seems to want to die,” says Whitford, “And the Loudrangle line is very nice and still very relevant. Any one of those young fillies coming along can really explode that family.” In 1981, No Class produced a foal by Smarten who would go on to become Canada’s champion 3-year-old filly of 1984. Her name was Classy ‘n Smart. Continuing the standard of excellence established by No Class and Loudrangle, Classy ‘n Smart would retire from the track and go on to capture yet another Broodmare championship for Sam-Son. Ernie Samuel believed in sending his mares to the very best stallions. Over the years, this included broodmare visits to Kentucky for pairings with Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector and many others. In 1987, Classy ‘n Smart journeyed to Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky where she was paired with Danzig, who would ultimately become the three-time leading sire in North America (1991-93).The union would result in the 1988 birth of a tall, leggy filly whose distinctive white star on her forehead earned her the nickname “Daisy.” In 20 short years, Sam-Son Farm had grown into one of the most prominent racing and breeding stables in all of North America.This young filly, however, would put the farm on a map of the entire horse racing world. Dance Smartly She was quite simply the most beloved filly in the history of Canadian racing. While Dance Smartly didn’t really stand out from the other blue-blooded Sam-Son yearlings early on, feelings of optimism came to fruition in July of her two-year-old season when

she captured her debut at Woodbine Racetrack by 31/2 lengths. As summer progressed, she won two of her next three races including a score in the Natalma Stakes on grass. In October, Dance Smartly and her equally promising stablemate Wilderness Song were shipped to NewYork’s Belmont Park to contest the 1990 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The Sam-Son pairing competed in the Juvenile Fillies and unfortunately got in a speed duel against one another during the first half mile that ultimately drained both horses and resulted in a third-place finish for Dance Smartly. It would be close to two years before she lost another race.

Smartly became the first Canadian-bred to ever win a Breeders’ Cup race when she defeated champion older mare Queena and Versailles Treaty to capture the Distaff. Her shining moment came despite missing several weeks of training leading up to the race due to an injured front hoof. She had completed an undefeated season and received a host of honors including the Eclipse Award as North America’s best three-year-old filly as well as Canada’s Horse of the Year. She came back in 1992 and raced four times as a four-year-old, highlighted by her third career victory over the boys when she captured the Canadian Maturity Stakes.

While disappointing, the Breeders’ Cup had shown the Samuels family they had a fighter on their hands and Canada recognized this by awarding her the Sovereign Award as 1990’s champion two-year-old filly. As the 1991 season began, Dance Smartly coasted to victories in her first three starts including the $150,000 Canadian Oaks. A jockey change was made prior to the Oaks when trainer Jim Day awarded the mount to his brother Pat.The future Hall-of-Famer would stay with her for the remainder of her racing days.

She retired as the world’s all-time leading money-winning filly or mare with a bankroll of $3,263,835. In 17 career starts, she never finished worse than third. Her brilliance carried over to the breeding shed where she produced, among others, back-to-back Queen’s Plate champions Scatter the Gold (’00) and Dancethruthedawn (’01). In August of 2007, Dance Smartly suffered an irreparable injury in her paddock at Sam-Son and was euthanized. At age 19, she was gone too soon.“She made Canada very proud,” says Dave Whitford.“She was almost like a Northern Dancer at the time. She was a once in a lifetime, there’s no doubt about that.”

Dance Smartly’s performance in the Oaks was so dominant, a decision was subsequently made to run her against the boys in Canada’s greatest race, the Queen’s Plate. She didn’t disappoint as she won first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown by eight lengths on dirt. She followed this up weeks later with a two-length triumph on dirt in the Prince of Wales Stakes and on August 18, 1991, Dance Smartly became the second filly to win the Canadian Triple Crown when she and Pat Day captured the Breeders’ Stakes on turf at Woodbine. Different tracks, different surfaces, different genders — nothing seemed to slow her down. The highlight of her racing career, and the history of Sam-Son Farm for that matter, came less than three months later in the 1991 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs. The disappointment from the previous year was a distant memory when Dance

His name was Smart Strike, by the great Mr. Prospector out of Classy ‘n Smart. While his injury-shortened racing career was notable, his impact as a stallion would be felt around the world. GYPSY QUEEN A TRIBUTE

There is never an exact science when it comes to breeding Thoroughbreds and if it were that easy, it wouldnt be the exciting game that it is - horse breeders are the most positive people in the world, believing every foal born is going to be a future champion year in and year out.

hilst breeders can pace the sales yards at Broodmare sales, studying catalogues, how much Black Type a mare has and conformation along with progeny produced, its almost along the famous lines from the movie Forest Gump - “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!” Whilst mares who have earned Black Type themselves at the track usually buy tickets to stud for their lesser performed siblings, its never a guarantee that a Black Type mare at stud will perform to the heights expected. Gypsy Queen is the sort of mare that keeps all breeders hopes alive at sales unplaced in one start at age 3, but a full sister to two Gr2 SA Oaks winners amongst their other Stakes wins – namely Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny. Gypsy Queen has no doubt trounced her Bold Black Type sisters at stud, whose progeny have won but not excelled to the the heights of Gypsy Queen. 86

There is also a saying that one man’s loss can be another man’s gain, and in the case of Gypsy Queen (who has a name sake racing currently by Gitano Hernando) it was Mike McHardy of Rathmor Stud who purchased the mare in 2003 at the Burwell Stud Dispersal Sale, for R55 000. Mike McHardy of Rathmor Stud describes his thoughts of Gypsy Queen at the sale: “ As a individual she was not much to look at. She just had the breeding lines that appealed to me and I suppose I went with my gut feel and got very lucky with her.” Gypsy Queen’s purchase price pales into comparison with the amount of coverage the placid bright bay mare would bring to Rathmor Stud, placing them firmly on the Thoroughbred breeding map and establishing a dynasty in her own right, both locally and internationally. Mike describes her purchase as “a huge help to us - she took over from the great mare Grecian Gale [who produced Gr1 winner Wendywood] that passed away and probably saved us from falling into a hole. At the time we only bred 8 to

15 mares a year, so you can imagine how difficult it is to be lucky enough to get a mare like this. It gave us international exposure which on a small farm like ours, its a once in a lifetime coup.” Sadly the 23 year old outstanding broodmare with a big honest eye and a thick bushy forelock passed away at her home of 14 years in Nottingham Road, Rathmor Stud, during the month of August this year. Voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year in 2011, Gypsy Queen has fast established herself in the studbook, with six daughters and a grand-daughter acquired by leading Thoroughbred nurseries in both South Africa and overseas – going on to produce six winning progeny between them, including in Ireland and a Listed winning juvenile granddaughter at Fairview – Queen Forever. Her grandson So Var is Gr3 placed and a 3-time winner at Turffontein. Her last foal produced (now a yearling filly) is a slightly sentimental one and a combination of the best to the best - Rathmor Stud stand one of the most exciting stallion prospects to come to South Africa in Noble Tune, the halfbrother to dual Gr1 winner Honor Code and the family of Serena’s Song and Made You Look, to name but a few of the greats from the internationally sought after pedigree. Asked if the filly would be sent to yearling sales, Mike confirmed that they would sell her. “We have two daughters already

in Golden earings, the Fort Wood, and then 50% of Judy Silvano (by SA Champion sire Silvano) with Klawervlei Stud in partnership. She will be visiting Coup De Grace this season which is an exceptional mating, he is the first son of Tapit to retire to stud in South Africa.” Gypsy Queen’s first daughter to go to stud was Among Royalty, who produced three winners for breeders Collingwood Stud. Leading breeding establishment Varsfontein, who amassed the most individual stakes winners which is unmatched by any other stud over the past South African racing season and saw them voted Equus Outstanding Breeder, have two of Gypsy Queen’s daughters at stud (both bred by Rathmor) – the unraced Jallad mare Queen Of All and Gypsy Madonna. Golden Earings full sister, Gypsy Madonna, has foaled to Judpot (2015) and Gimmethegreenlight (2016). Sold for R1,2million as a yearling, Gypsy Madonna won twice and placed fourth in a Listed race. Queen Of All gave Gypsy Queen her first Black Type as a grand dam, with the Scribante-owned juvenile filly by Gimmethegreenlight winning the Lady’s Slipper Stakes (Listed) at Fairview. Another Rathmor-bred daughter Surabi (by Wolfhound) won the Gr2 Camellia Stakes and the Listed Gardenia, and placed in several Graded Stakes races. A resident of Maine Chance Farms who stand Silvano, she has produced 4-time winner Sundari (including the Non-Black Type RA Flamingo Mile) and So Var – the latter trained by Gavin Van Zyl for owner Michael Leaf. It is the third win for So Var, who has in addition placed from all of seven of his starts, including a second to the talented Al Mariachi in the Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes at Greyville.

Mike describes his reaction when he heard that Gypsy’s Warning had sold for over R10-million from Keeneland, he said it was absolute jubilation and pride. “The fact that something from our small farm could sell for for that sort of money, and after that you realise that South Africa-breds are comparible to a degree in the international market, as she was taken to be a broodmare - which makes us realise that we do have the pedigrees here, to compete and sell internationally, which is all very exciting.”

“You cannot keep a family hot without other big studs helping you, and with the major studs having her daughters, it helps to spread your chances,” Mike goes on to say. “They go to good sires and get every opportunity with the best. With regards to overseas, its fantastic as I feel that when South Africa open up to export our Thoroughbreds, our family will be well known internationally and it will give us a head start.” The filly that put Gypsy Queen and Rathmor Stud on the map is Gypsy’s Warning, who after a glittering South African and American Gr1 winning career was sold at the Keeneland November sale for a whopping $1.05 million, offered at the time as a racing/broodmare prospect. Described as a temperamental filly from birth, quite the opposite of her mother, Gypsy’s Warning originally sold for R170 000 at 2007 National Yearling Sale to the Duncan Howells Racing Stable. Gypsy’s Warning got off to an exceptional start with Duncan Howells, recently awarded Kwa-Zulu Natal’s leading trainer for the season and a man who has trained many Group Winners, including the likes of the brilliant Gr1 exported fillies Via Africa and Same Jurisdiction. Duncan describes Gypsy’s Warning as one of the best fillies he has ever trained, going on to say that “she showed us very little in training at home, but was super star at the racecourse. Her win first time out was unexpected and she just got better and better with racing.”

Gypsy’s Warning won five races including three Gr1’s in South Africa with Howells, and two wins in America with trainer Graham Motion including the Gr1 Matriarch Stakes and the Gr3 Eatontown Handicap, earning R1,267,505 and $378,333 respectively.

– her sire Mogok is a half-brother to Machiavellian, whilst Romany Prince by Kahal is a son of Machiavellian – the common denominator being the broodmare Coup de Folie. Interestingly, Know’s sire Street Cry is also a son of Machiavellian.

From the age of 2 to 5 she won over distances of 1200 – 1800 metres, including the Gr1 Golden Slipper, the Gr1 Woolavington 2000, Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge and the Gr3 Strelitzia. In America she went on to prove herself by placing in the Gr1 Beverly D Stakes, Gr1 Yellow Ribbon and third in the Miss Liberty Listed Stakes.

All her descendants to sell at sales since 2003 have sold for a combined total of over R5 million between them at yearling sales, with 38 wins accumulated and five Black Type.

Her first foal, a filly by Street Cry named Know, won and placed in Ireland from seven starts and sold at Goff ’s 2015 breeding stock sale to Japanese interests for €50,000. Gypsy’s Warning has since foaled to the great chestnut galloping machine owned by Team Valor, Animal Kingdom. Gypsy Queen’s Black Type achievements at stud havent stopped there, and her Gr3 winning son of Kahal is a fivetime winner. Aptly named Romany Prince and in training with Ormond Ferraris, he is a winner the Gr3 London News Stakes and the Drum Star Listed. The R400 000 National Yearling Sales graduate has in addition, placed in several Graded Stakes races including the Gr3 Jubilee Handicap. Romany Prince is bred on similar lines to Gypsy’s Warning

Gypsy Queen is by Gr1 Durban July winner Royal Chalice and a daughter of Sara’s Warning by Caveat - her dam a half-sister to Smart Nuff (USA) and Shy Groom (USA). This family includes the closely related Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Tales Of Bravery, and amongst a plethora of Black Type entries from an overseas damline is nine-time and Gr1 winner Pierre Jourdan, and his siblings Gr2 winner Champagne Haze and Belle Rose. Stallions to come out of the female line include British Gr1 Prince Of Wales Stakes winner Morcon, Lord Lister (USA), Clever Allemont (USA), French-bred Noalcoholic and Alluvia. It is an active female line that has helped not only Rathmor Stud in future pedigree histories to come - her daughters are young at stud and from the promising start of her grandchildren, more to look forward to in the future from this damline of a special broodmare that has clearly begun her own dynasty.
