LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

elcome to the 18th edition of International Racehorse Magazine. Longer daylight hours for us here in the Southern Hemisphere signal the start of summer and what is bound to be an exciting racing season. In the Northern Hemisphere, we enjoyed the excitement of the Keeneland Yearling Sale recently, and we still have the Breed Stock sale in November to look forward to. Breeders’ Cup also lies ahead and promises to be a memorable one. We have put together a great issue for you. Michele MacDonald follows what is surely one of the great horses of our time, California Chrome, to Del Mar, where he bested Beholder and Dortmund to increase his already record breaking (excluding Japan) earnings to $13.25mil. Read more about Chrome on page 44. With the Northern Hemisphere breeding season just around the corner, Michele also looks at some interesting options in First Year Sires on page 50. Last but not least from Michele, she spends some time with Koji Maeda, owner of the North Hills racing and breeding program in Japan, on page 81.

Always deserving a special mention is Sharon Lee Chapman. Every time I meet her, the words “dynamite” and “small packages” come to mind! Sharon travels to Birdsville,in Central West Queensland, Australia. This tiny town boasts a state primary school, a police station manned by one officer, and a hospital staffed by one nurse. In September each year, 7000 racing fans descend on this town to attend the iconic Birdsville Races, read more on page 38. There is a lot more to get through, Magic Millions, South African Awards Evenings, Breed Stats and a lot more. I leave you with a quote: “The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements, grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.” ~Sharon Ralls Lemon See you around the track.

Liesl King kicks off her contribution with a look back at the Vodacom Durban July, the race with twisted fates, hard luck stories and jubilant underdogs. The master, Piere Strydom rode The Conglomerate to a magnificent win for owners Marcus and Ingrid Jooste to rewrite this horse’s story, more on page 20. Liesl casts the spotlight on Gavin Lerena, the South African superstar who beat some of the world’s best jockeys for a top spot in the Longines Hong Kong International Jockey’s Challenge. She tracks his path from entering the South African Jockey Academy in 2002 on page 74. We then move on to Goodwood and the Qatar Goodwood Festival on page 26. If you can’t get enough on one day of racing, then why not a five day racing event? Last from Liesl in this issue is a look at our cover model Smart Call, the South African hopeful at the Breeders’ Cup in November, on page 8.

mart Call reached the pinnacle of her South African racing career when she won the G1 J & B Met over 2000m on the 30th of January this year. Not only did the talented mare record her third Grade 1 victory that day, but she also thrashed 2016 Horse of the Year Legal Eagle by a staggering two lengths.Yet it was her victory in the WFA G1 Paddock Stakes (1800m) three weeks earlier that set in motion a daring plan. A plan that would take nine months to complete; a plan that would take her on a journey stretching over four continents; a plan that would culminate in her running in the World Championships of racing, the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Since its inception, the Breeders’ Cup races have mostly been contested by USA based horses, as the entrance requirements were fairly onerous. A world championship needs runners from

all over the world though and in order to attract entrants from outside of the USA, a Breeders Cup Challenge was created in 2007 with 15 “Win and You’re In” races in two countries. Horses winning these races were automatically guaranteed a spot in one of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races should they wish to take part. By 2014 the Challenge had grown to 71 races in 13 countries including South Africa, where the G1 L’Ormarins Queens’ Plate had been granted “Win and You’re In” status. With the race mainly won by colts, the Breeders’ Cup committee decided to add a fillies and mares race in 2016 and the G1 Paddock Stakes joined the list of “Win and You’re In” races. In winning the Paddock Stakes, Smart Call therefore qualified to run in the $2 million G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf race over 2000m at Santa Anita on the 5th of November. Previously Variety Club, Capetown Noir and Futura had all qualified as

Now she had her chance and Laird was equally as keen. As soon as she won, I said to Jessica “we’re going,” Laird recalls. It was to be the start of a nine-month journey, but they had two things on their side, Laird’s experience and Smart Call’s laid back temperament. Travelling horses is not for the faint-hearted. This time though there was a difference. For Smart Call is There is so much that can go wrong along the way and often trained by Alec Laird, a man known as the pioneer of travelling highly strung thoroughbreds do not take kindly to being confined and competing horses overseas. Laird famously took 1996 in a pressurised metal tube, with long delays and frequent stops. Durban July winner London News to Hong Kong to capture The most seasoned of globetrotters such as Red Cadeaux, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup in 1997. And Jessica Slack, who Sheikhzayedroad and Flintshire all have one thing in common; a has always dreamed of having a runner in the Breeders’ Cup, great temperament and calm demeanor and so did Smart Call. is Smart Call’s owner. Jessica takes up the story. “Alec and I were watching Mike de Kock’s feats in Dubai one evening and After departing from Johannesburg on the 27th of March, the we started chatting about what our dreams were for racing mare’s first stop was the island of Mauritius and judging from internationally. I told him my dream was to run in a race on photos of her stay, the 90 days of quarantine there was certainly Breeders’ Cup day with a homebred. My dad is American so not too stressful. With only a 750m track at his disposal, Laird I am not sure if it is a dream born from that or from the could only canter the mare, but Smart Call went for regular amazing experiences and fun I have had as a spectator at the swims in the azure blue waters surrounding the tropical island Breeders’ Cup, the couple of times I have been lucky enough with her groom and work rider Bangeli (Moffat). to attend. I remember saying to Alec that we had time, it was a “one day” dream.” Her- next stop would be Abington Place stables, in Newmarket, winners of the L’Ormarins Queens’ Plate, but with onerous quarantine restrictions in place, none had taken up the offer to compete in the Breeders’ Cup. Hence little notice was taken of the fact that Smart Call had just won a “Win and You’re In” race.

Horses do not fly direct like humans do as Steven Jell, who is in charge at Abington Place, explains. “The horses flew from Mauritius to Nairobi in Kenya where they spent three hours at the airport, before flying onwards to Liege in Belgium. That trip took about 13 hours, followed by a three hour road trip from Liege to the so-called “Horse Hotel” in Amsterdam, where they got a deserved 12-hour rest. Then Smart Call had a further nine-hour trip from Amsterdam to Newmarket, which included a ferry trip across the English Channel. Jell also reports that the mare arrived in great shape and promptly emptied her manger!

nothing left to prove in South Africa. Whether she’ll be good enough to win abroad, that I don’t know. But just to compete there will be amazing.”

Currently Smart Call is working well on the Newmarket Heath with regular dawn appearances on the Al Bahatri and the Lime Kilns gallops. Frankie Dettori, who sat on her for the first time on the Al Bahatri recently, was full of praise for the mare, commenting that while she was a bit rusty after not having raced for so long, she gave him a great feel. With the Sun Chariot a mere two weeks away, Smart Call had her first proper gallop on the Rowley Mile. And Dettori, who was onboard again, confirmed The next four months would be crucial for Smart Call as Laird, that she handled the undulating track with ease. with Jell’s assistance worked on getting her back to full fitness. Laird explains that they decided on the G1 The Kingdom of Slowly but surely all the pieces are falling in place. A date with Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes on the 1st of October as her prep destiny awaits Smart Call as she crosses the ocean to the Breeders’ run. “The Sun Chariot a Group 1 over the undulating Rowley Cup, following in the footsteps of her paternal grandmother, the Mile course, but with her being based in Newmarket, we will be great filly Banks Hill, who won the very same race, the Breeders’ able to train on the course and get her used to it.The Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf fifteen years ago. She will carry with her Cup is five weeks later which is perfect and I hope to have her the hopes and dreams of all her South African fans, but most of peaking by the time we get there.” Laird is a realist and knows all she will be fulfilling the life long dream of a girl, who dreamt of his star mare will be up against the best in the world. “She has “one day” having a homebred horse in the Breeders’ Cup.

ape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) launched the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in 2012. Since then, this dynamic bloodstock company has become synonymous with innovation, making a bold impact in the SouthAfrican thoroughbred auction market.

CTS nurture a positive vision for the sport of horse racing. They continue to promote various niche sales to best represent breeders’ range of stock, together with associated incentive races which massively boost the stakes pot, regenerating interest for owners.

16

To illustrate, CTS run a special incentive program with qualifying yearlings eligible for Million Dollar Races (over 1200m and 1600m) to be held in Cape Town during January 2018 on the Investec Day Of Dreams. Each race will tempt connections with a sky high stake of USD 500,000 – dramatically greater- than- usual prize money for South Africa. Early Spring is an exciting time of transition. Mares are getting ready to foal down and young horses in training may only really start to reveal their true talents on the tracks with the African sun on their backs. October and November are also months now traditionally linked to popular Breeze-Up auctions with the Ready to Run Sale’s concept now an

accepted way of selling thoroughbreds. Buyers all around the world respond favourably when able to make their own judgements seeing the youngsters put through their paces before the bidding starts. CTS host two such auctions with intriguing catalogues. Durbanville racecourse is the venue on 14th/15th October for the CTS Ready To Run Sale presented by Lanzerac Hotel and Spa, with Emperor’s Palace staging the 2016 CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale on the 24th/25th November . As the name suggests, horses acquired at these sales are ‘ready’ to compete almost immediately, so can provide fortunate investors with a rapid return – lucrative CTS incentive races are linked to these specific sales as well. At Turffontein in 2015, Champagne Haze lucked in to a big payday in the “City of Gold”. Then, R160 000 bargain buy, Budapest outpaced his foes at Kenilworth to secure the bulk of that tempting R2,5 million total. of 16 runners going to post, buyers will hold favourable prospects with a live chance of winning R2.5 million in stakes! Kenilworth Racecourse will again stage the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes, on the 19th November 2016. Lanzerac the “grande dame” of luxury Stellenbosch hospitality, is in the mid-stages of a splendid restoration, boasting newly refurbished rooms and suites. Major function areas have been upgraded together with the complete regeneration of a swish wine-tasting centre and deli constantly stocked with sumptuous fresh goodies. The revamped Lanzerac Spa is also due to open its doors late 2016. On race-day, “Classic Extravagance” will appropriately be showcased in the opulent marquee, with regal gold colours featuring prominently. Jo-Anna Looms of Lanzerac revealed, “In Celebration of Excellence will be a fitting theme for this year’s classy event, linking the exploits of champion racehorses with a stately property of great renown.” CTS auctions have proven repeatedly to be a source of Grade 1 champions. Stakes, going on to perform with distinction in a succession of prestigious events such as the Cape Guineas and a couple of Grade 1 sprints, before seeking his fortune abroad. Things may not have panned out as anticipated overseas, but he reverted to winning ways in the recent Grade 1 Mercury Sprint and is genuinely top class. Fellow RTR product, Zodiac Ruler is a striking son of Zoffany, with a Grade 2 victory and a valiant second to CTS graduate, Gunner, in the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes at Greyville in July, already part of his impressive CV. He is expected to build on those early achievements and be a big player in upcoming Classic contests. Arguably, the best of all from this vintage is Always In Charge, who was sold at the 2015 CTS Ready To Run and was honoured as the Equus Champion two-year old Colt. He was narrowly defeated on debut in early April before shedding his Maiden in an eye-catching runaway at Kenilworth later that month. Canny trainer Vaughan Marshall knows a seriously good one from years of experience, so targeted the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at Scottsville for Always In Charge’s next outing. The son of SA’s Champion sire of

2014/2015, Captain Al sustained pace proved too much for his foes in that key June showdown. Amongst other young horses purchased at RTR’s in 2015, Sergeant Hardy, Bishops Bounty and Lord Balmoral all showed smart potential as juveniles, securing that desirably quick return on investment for lucky owners. Dual Grade 1 winner and Equus Champion French Navy is another breeze up success story together with 2013 contemporary, the Joey Ramsden trained Brutal Force, one of the country’s top sprinters. Grade 1 winner Captain America was also sourced at the CTS RTR, and this high-class, longstriding miler has gone on to record earnings in excess of R3 million. His trainer, Brett Crawford also secured Fillies Guineas winner, Alexis at this sale, so is a total convert to the concept. Passionate South African racing fans have these important sales and a Spring program full of high quality races to look forward to over the next few months. Buyers will be scouring the catalogues for equally gifted youngsters to those described above, whilst race-goers will be treated to a great spectacle and competitive races with big money on the line...

From the world’s most revered statesman of our time, Nelson Mandela:

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.” Nestled at the southern most tip of Africa, South Africa is a unique destination offering visitors a selection of the most exquisite natural beauty spots in the world. Enter the Sunlux Collection boasting four of the most opulent properties within Sun International’s stable, where luxury combines with the grandeur of all things local. It’s all about discovering Africa’s wonder: from the sea to the bush to the city – the Sunlux Collection takes you to that magical place where experience meets the soul. This soulful journey begins at the tip of Africa in the fairest Cape, at the Sunlux flagship, Cape Town’s The Table Bay. The setting for this breathtakingly beautiful hotel, situated in the shadow of the world famous Table Mountain, in a working harbour where seals bark and gulls wheel and swoop, makes it one of the world’s best loved hotels. On a clear day, Robben Island – the prison that housed the world’s most famous political prisoner, Nelson Mandela – is visible across the shimmering expanse of water. Cape Town, the very heart of Africa’s wonder, is the seat of the soulful experience for which Sunlux properties are renowned. A forest of “fynbos” – the local name for a floral kingdom unique to the Western Cape – enchants and delights with its visual splendour. And none is so magnificent as the Protea, unique to this part of the world. To honour this plethora of edible freshness, the executive chef at The Table Bay makes regular foraging trips through the Fynbos, collecting plants and herbs to be used in that day’s menu. Curious guests can also go on Food Foraging Tours arranged by The Table Bay.

Said Liam Oddie, Sun International Group General Manager in charge of Hospitality Marketing: “The Table Bay is at the heart of everything that the glorious Cape has to offer: a quick trip away from the confluence of the cold Atlantic and the warm Indian oceans; the once-in-alifetime experience of cage diving with great white sharks, a boat ride away from prison island, Robben Island, a hike up the iconic Table Mountain, the chance to ramble through the fynbos, with the third highest level of biodiversity in the world… “These are all unique experiences, exclusive to our South African destination. We are proudly South African, and proud that Sunlux properties are at the heart of the South African experience.” Leaving the majestic beauty of the Western Cape, the Sunlux journey continues east, to the coastal city Port Elizabeth, home to the newest addition to the Sunlux Collection: The Boardwalk. There are few hotels where whale and dolphin watching can be done from your bedroom, where sunrise over the ocean is a joyful thing to behold, where the beach, within walking distance from the hotel’s front door, stretches endlessly along a promenade. Port Elizabeth, better known as “the friendly city” is also the point of departure or entry that takes travellers along the famous Garden Route, to or from Cape Town. On the way brave travellers have been known to stop long enough to throw themselves off the Bloukrans Bridge, site of the world’s highest commercial bungee jump. When the adrenaline stops pumping, an excursion to the Tsisikamma National Park, a protected coastal reserve renowned for its indigenous forests and dramatic coastline, is a must.

rhinoceros). Here The Palace of the Lost City guests can view the Super Seven, adding cheetah and wild dog to the list. Said Liam Oddie: “It’s unusual for a game reserve to be found this close to a resort like Sun City’s The Palace of the Lost City. “You can view game from a hot-air balloon in the Pilanesberg – a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and the only safari experience of its kind in South Africa. And just an hour later you can be playing a round of golf on a legendary championship course, ranked as the leading golf course in South Africa and designed by golfing great Gary Player.” He added that top international and local entertainment was also on offer, as well as a range of dining options to satisfy the most difficult palate. From The Palace of the Lost City, we head to The Maslow, the big city jewel in the Sunlux Collection crown situated in the heart of Africa’s business hub, Sandton. An urban retreat that allows an escape from the hurly burly clamour of the surrounding economic hub, The Maslow has become the preferred place to be, and be seen, for movers and shakers from around the globe. The Maslow is also a gateway into the life, leisure and history of South Africans living a racy life in the world-class city, Johannesburg. On The Maslow’s doorstep are some of the finest retail therapy outlets on the continent, with shopping that covers global brands along with the best of African design. Revisiting history is a necessary part of a trip to the city that locals call “Jozi”. It is at the Apartheid Museum that visitors embark on a journey that takes them through the sad history of separation and oppression in South Africa.

The soulful journey takes a break from the ocean, and into safari and game viewing territory, to the luxurious resort that is The Palace of the Lost City.

Freedom finally came with the release of the world’s most beloved leader, Nelson Mandela, whose home on Vilakazi Street in Soweto’s Orlando West (he lived there from 1946 to 1962) is on the “must be visited” list of things to do in Johannesburg.

The Sun City resort is built on the edge of the game rich Pilanesberg National Park, distinctive for being malariafree. But this park offers more than a viewing of just the traditional big five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and

THE DURBAN JULY A RACE LIKE NONE OTHER

T

he first Saturday in July – mention that date to any racing enthusiast and they will immediately tell you “that’s when the Vodacom Durban July is run.” The race with its 120-year history has had many sponsors and hence to simplify matters most simply talk about ‘The July’. Despite being a conditions handicap, it is considered to be South Africa’s premier race, the one race every jockey, trainer and owner wants to win and not unlike the Melbourne Cup, the race everybody wants to attend. Over the years there have been a number of changes. The inaugural July was run over a mile (1600m) for a stake of 500 sovereigns and unlike most racing jurisdictions where race distances tend to decrease over the years, the July has steadily increased. 1906 saw a tiny increase to 1670m, in 1913

22

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

it increased to 1800m, to 2000m in 1915 and to 2100m in 1941. In 1970 the final change to the current distance of 2200m was made. Even the race name has seen some changes, with the original race in 1897 run as the Durban Winter Handicap. 1928 saw it changed to the Durban July Handicap. Interestingly the race name reverted back to its original name during the Second World War, before changing back again to the Durban July Handicap, as it is known today, in 1946. Rothmans was the July’s first big sponsor, a partnership that would last 38 years. In 2002 Vodacom stepped in as race sponsor, a position they still hold today. A premier race is guaranteed to attract interesting records and unusual tales and the Durban July is no different.Through

the years there have been only four back-to-back victories with the most recent being the diminutive El Picha, who won in 1999 and 2000. Legendary trainer Syd Laird holds the record for most wins, with a tally of seven, while Terence Millard captured six. Three jockeys have won the illustrious race four times, with two of them, Anthony Delpech and Anton Marcus, both currently vying for that elusive fifth victory to take the title outright. Hard luck stories and the Durban July seem to go hand in hand, but none can trump that of Sea Cottage, one of the best horses ever seen in South Africa. Sea Cottage was trained by Champion trainer Syd Laird and according to Laird, the colt wasn’t the most handsome of creatures. Sea Cottage was light framed, lacking in substance, with rather 24

straight front legs and calf knees. Despite a less than stellar conformation, Sea Cottage had an unbelievable action, a good temperament and as Laird put it, intelligence that even exceeded that of his trainer! In 1966 having swept all before him, Sea Cottage was the July favourite. Then the unthinkable happened. Three weeks before the race, on June 10, 1966, while walking under the Blue Lagoon Bridge on his way to the beach for his morning training, Sea Cottage was shot in the hindquarters with a pistol. The culprits, a shady club owner, his henchman and his bookmaker had hatched a plan to stop Sea Cottage from running, thus settling the club owner’s big gambling debt. Thankfully the shot was not fatal. The vets decided that the best course of action was to leave the bullet where it had

of a Polytrack, the turf course was narrowed to 18 meters in 2013. Consequently the running of the 2014 and 2015 Vodacom Durban July ended in the boardroom with the jockeys still getting used to navigating the narrow track. 2016 however saw a trouble free race and a surprise winner, well After encountering traffic problems in the home straight, at least for some! Sea Cottage finished a gallant fourth. One year later though, with bullet still in his rump, Sea Cottage finally won South In the lead up to the 2015 Durban July the Australian import Africa’s premier race in a dead-heat with Jollify. 1967 saw Sea The Conglomerate, a gelding by Lonhro was all the rage. the 2015 July, The Conglomerate was one of the hard luck stories, finishing in eighth, five lengths behind eventual winner Power King. In 2016 Ramsden returned to Durban withThe Conglomerate, to a race that was now worth R4.25 million, a far cry from the original purse of 500 sovereigns. He was absolutely convinced that this was the horse that would deliver him and owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste their first July. The media though, after the hype of 2015 were sceptical, focusing rather on Triple Crown winner Abashiri, the star filly Bela-Bela and the Cape upstart with an incredible turn of foot, Marinaresco. Ramsden however had bought The Conglomerate as his July horse and it wasn’t an easy purchase. Firstly he had to convince Markus Jooste that he had found him his July winner and then due to having overslept, he had to persuade a taxi driver that Melbourne’s streets were indeed a Grand Prix circuit, in order to get to the sales ring on time. And perhaps the media and the punters who allowed the gelding to start at long odds were justified. The Conglomerate had drawn barrier 18 of 18 and his jockey though supremely talented, had already celebrated his fiftieth birthday. Yet Ramsden was unwavering in his belief that The Conglomerate 26

could win the July and rightly so. Before a packed crowd of 55,000, Piere Strydom, who had won the race three times before, got the gelding across from his ‘death’ draw, neatly slotting in behind the early leaders. Rounding the final bend The Conglomerate was only five lengths adrift and once straightened, he charged down the centre of the track, passing horses as if they were standing still. Marinaresco flew up late from the back, but there was no stopping Strydom and The Conglomerate. Marinaresco finished in second, a quarter length back, with Mac De Lago in third a further two lengths back. The champagne flowed, as the victory was celebrated on and off the track. Sadly work commitments meant Jooste could not be there, but Mrs Jooste was on hand to graciously accept the couple’s first ever July trophy. A master class in race riding earned Strydom his fourth title, adding his name to the record held by greats such as Harold ‘Tiger’ Wright. And the Conglomerate? He calmly cantered down the track on his lap of honour, accepting the applause befitting the champion that he is. He may not be the next Sea Cottage, but his name will forever be added to those greats who have conquered South Africa’s premier race, the Durban July.

T

he Goodwood racecourse, nestling on a hilltop on the Sussex Downs, is surely the most picturesque racecourse in the world; it is also the home of the five day Qatar Goodwood Festival, held annually at the end of July. The Festival highlight being the G1 Sussex Stakes, contested over a mile. In 2011 an undefeated three-year-old colt named Frankel and the leading older miler Canford Cliffs were set to clash in the Sussex Stakes. A thrilling duel was expected and it wasn’t long before the media coined the phrase,The Duel on the Downs. That duel was of course a rather one-sided affair, with Frankel beating Canford Cliffs by a staggering five lengths without raising a sweat. This year another Duel on the Downs was eagerly anticipated for two of the best three-year-old colts were stepping into the ring for a rematch. The first, Galileo Gold, trained by Hugo Palmer and owned by Sheikh Joaan’s Al Shaqab Racing had won the first of the Classics, the G1 2000 Guineas in style. While the second colt, The Gurkha trained by Aiden O’Brien, ran away with the French Classic by 5.5 lengths. The two colts met for the first time on the opening day of Royal Ascot, in the G1 The St James’s Palace Stakes. Galileo Gold under a superb ride by Frankie Dettori made that race his own, winning comfortably by 1.25 lengths with The Gurkha in second. Ryan Moore and The Gurkha were out for revenge and the Sussex Stakes was the perfect place for a rematch.

30

Dettori on Galileo Gold got the run of the race and set off for home down the famous downhill home straight. Galileo Gold had a headstart, but Moore sent The Gurkha flying after his nemesis and the Duel on the Downs was on. Side by side, the two colts fought, neither giving an inch, with perfect matching strides. Then, slowly, The Gurkha seemed to be gaining the upper hand. A nostril; then a head and with the line fast approaching, a neck. The 2011 Sussex Stakes may have been billed as the Duel on the Downs, but 2016 edition was the real deal. In any epic battle there can only be one victor and this time it was The Gurkha’s turn. A thrilling finish to the Festival’s showpiece. Yet many will tell you that the actual feature race of the week is the gruelling G2 Goodwood Cup. Galloping 3200m is not for the faint hearted, galloping 3200m on the undulating and twisting course that is Goodwood is only for the very brave. The 2015 edition of the race ended in a thrilling duel between Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris and the Michael Bell trained Big Orange, with Big Orange snatching victory on the line. 2016 was however quite another story. It had been raining since early on and when a sea fret descended on Goodwood, the visibility plummeted. The runners may have been at the start, but without being able to see a single horse, even the commentator admitted defeat, simply calling that the race had started. TV cameras valiantly tried

Big Orange wins the Goodwood Cup

to pick up the runners on various points along the course, but all one could see was a sea of gloomy grey fog. Then the sound of the galloping hooves reached the tightly packed crowds along the running rail. Like mythical beasts, ghostly horses appeared out of the mist and driving rain and leading the pack, splattered with mud and with his reins dangling was Big Orange. Jamie Spencer had long since given up steering and was simply urging his mount along. Now being a big rangy type with what the English call a common head, Big Orange is not the most beautiful of horses. What he lacks in beauty though he makes up for in courage and heart. For Big Orange is tough as nails, and heading down the long hill he courageously fought off first Sword Fighter and then Pallasator, to claim his second Goodwood Cup. Another double winner came in the G3 L’Ormarins Queens Plate Stakes over 1400m on a day blessed with glorious sunshine. Well it was a double for everybody but the winning horse! Let me explain. 2015 saw Amy Eria, a rank outsider charge into the lead under Gregory Benoist to deny a flying Frankie Dettori on the favourite Osaila. In true L’Ormarins style, Amy Eria returned to the winner’s enclosure sporting a garland of blue and white flowers, while Al Shaqab’s Racing Advisor Harry Herbert and her trainer Francois Rohaut collected their trophies. When interviewed Rohaut explains that he had the race underlined in red in his diary and that he was delighted that his filly won. What he did not say

was that once he has won a race, he likes to win it again and again. So when Rohaut legged Benoist up onto Al Jazi (IRE), incidentally also owned by Al Shaqab, few took notice. Al Jazi however had been successful over 1200m and a mile and the downhill run over 1400m suited her perfectly. The filly jumped from stall one and Benoist kept her on the far rail and out of trouble, before asking for a run in the final stages. Al Jazi responded instantly and quickly extended away from her nearest challenger Mise En Rose and James McDonald to win comfortably. “This was quite a long term target,” said Rohaut.“When we win a race, we try to win it again”, exclaimed a delighted Rohaut. Interestingly this race is a result of a collaboration between Goodwood and L’Ormarins, with the Gr.3 Glorious Goodwood Handicap due to be run in South Africa on L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Day in January 2017.Alex Eade, general manager, Goodwood Racecourse explained the twinning agreement between Goodwood and L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. “It’s a fabulous partnership between the two brands really. Both stand for style and elegance and it comes together at the Qatar Goodwood Festival with the L’Ormarins Queens Plate race. It was a fabulous race yesterday and for us it was really good as it was won by Al Jazi, owned by Sheikh Joaan Al Thani who is our main sponsor here for the week. He was here and he loved the race and he was able to receive the trophy.” On the beautiful Sussex Downs anything is possible. The Qatar Goodwood Festival delivers a superb week of racing and even when the weather doesn’t quite play along, it is still a week that is not to be missed. 32

The high class performances were led by champion mare Winx, the highest rated Australian racehorse and highest rated mare in the world.

The clear favourite to be crowned Australian Horse of the Year, Winx is out to make it back to back wins in racing’s major award after the crowning of fellow Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling graduate Dissident a year earlier.

During the season Winx remained unbeaten in seven starts a streak which included five Group One victories - the Epsom Handicap, WS Cox Plate, Chipping Norton Stakes, George Ryder Stakes and The Doncaster.

BIRDSVILLE THE MOST ICONIC RACE MEETING IN THE WORLD When it rains in the outback, it rains and Birdsville received half their annual rainfall the day before Day 1 of the Races, 38mm. The track was underwater as the aerial photographs showed and it seemed incomprehensible that the race meeting could possibly go ahead.

H

owever, there’s something special about the spirit of those in the outback and the community and local Council came together and achieved the impossible. Birdsville races would go ahead on Sunday, in a combined 11 race card, postponed from Friday and Saturday. The town was now isolated, with all roads in and out of Birdsville closed until floodwaters receded and with rivers about to hit their peak over the next week, people wondered when they would get out at all. But back to the races, and Sunday’s 11 race program was spectacular and the crowd loved every second of it, after having braved incredible conditions throughout the week. Gusts of over 80km an hour hit their campsites on Thursday after the downpour and there were scenes of devastation all over town with tents blown apart and debris littering the campsites. It didn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands that made the

44

annual pilgrimage to Birdsville in what is one of the most iconic races in the world. Birdsville has an annual population of 120 which grows to around 6000-7000 race week and is described as the biggest party in the outback. By Monday, there was one road out of town, which only stayed open for 2 hours as hundreds of vehicles flocked to get out of town before the rivers rose. Only the brave attempted the Cooper Creek crossing, but the waters were too deep for some and many cars nearly floated away. The road was closed 2 hours later and not expected to re open for at least a week, with the famous Birdsville track resembling a lake and closed for 2-3 weeks. To get out, we had to detour and head north, some 800kms in the opposite direction. But with smiles on our faces and tales to tell for a lifetime, I know I’ll be back to Birdsville for the 3rd time next year. It’s a Bucket List item, so Google Birdsville and see what all the hype is about, it’s well worth the effort.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

FOR CHROME

Every time American champion California Chrome seems to have reached the zenith in what has been a three-year surge to superstardom, he takes another stride beyond expectations.

T

he latest chapter in the saga of the red fireball who was bred on a $2,500 stud fee from an $8,000 mare, revealed him soaring to perhaps his best lifetime performance in the $1 million Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar on August 20. Defeating champion mare Beholder and towering challenger Dortmund, California Chrome left them and other rivals gasping with a front-running display of speed from the moment he leapt out of the starting gate. While increasing what already historically ranked as the highest earnings for any racehorse based outside Japan by $600,000 to $13,252,650, California Chrome also has reached another unique level by completely repaying the investment made in him by Taylor Made Farm as a stallion prospect. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” reflected Taylor Made Vice President, Frank Taylor in relating that the five-year-old has earned more money than what the farm paid prior to ever getting near 46

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

to breeding a mare. “We got very lucky and blessed and it’s just gone to perfection at this point. No matter what happens now, even if he never wins another race, it’s gone a lot better than I ever would have dreamed it would have.” What perhaps is just as remarkable in this unparalleled story is that, over the next four months through the end of January, it is possible California Chrome could earn another $10.9 million, give or take a few dollars, by prevailing in just three more races. If no problems arise and he does win the Awesome Again Stakes in October, the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November and the newly created $12 million Pegasus World Cup in January, the son of Lucky Pulpit would surpass even the richest of Japan’s runners, who compete for the world’s most lucrative purses. When yen are converted to dollars at the time of racing, two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Gentildonna currently stands atop the racing world with total earnings of $18,468,392.

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

47

While the potential schedule shared by California Chrome’s connections could foretell the end of his racing days, it remains possible he could run on through 2017, delaying his stud career for a year.

say this now—this is the best horse I’ve ever ridden,” Espinoza declared after the Pacific Classic, just a few minutes following his comment that Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was “the best three-year-old” he had ridden.

“We’re going to consider it,”Taylor said. “I think we’ll probably sit down after the Breeders’ Cup Classic and see how sound he is and how he is feeling, and probably at that point make a decision whether we are going to run him another year or retire him and start booking mares. If you start booking mares and then you decide to run him, that wouldn’t be any good. We’ll probably make the decision right after the Breeders’ Cup Classic.”

“I just wanted to get out there and see what was going to happen,” Espinoza continued, referring to bouncing out of the gate from the rail post and immediately heading toward the center of the track to take on Beholder and Dortmund, who were in posts seven and eight. “He was going well the whole trip. He was in a perfect rhythm. The way he’s running now, he could beat anyone, anytime. He’s run on dirt. He’s won on grass. He has won all over the world. He’s just so, so special,” Espinoza said.

When asked if California Chrome’s extraordinary racing success after time off due to bone bruising and backaches in the middle of 2015 might ignite a trend of more racing for male runners rather than quick retirements, Taylor indicated how rare the accomplishments have been. “This worked out—usually it doesn’t,” he said.“If you go back and look at all the people who have had a horse who has been off after being at a certain level and then they go on and run them more, it usually goes the other way. But this horse is just a special horse,” he emphasized. Some insight into just how special California Chrome is came from the man who sits on his back, jockey Victor Espinoza, who has been riding the horse ever since December 2013, when they partnered to win the King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood Park. “He’s just an amazing horse. He won so easy today. I’m going to 48

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

“What can you say about him? He’s just a super horse. That’s why he’s the best horse in the country,” praised trainer Art Sherman. “He’s Chrome and I can’t believe that I get to train him. I’m sure he’ll be in the Hall of Fame someday, and it will be good to know that I trained a horse that’s in the Hall of Fame.” Among the top qualities that make California Chrome so special is his intelligence. “I’ve been around horses all my life. There’s a lot of attributes that make California Chrome great, but his mind is one of them. He’s the smartest horse I’ve ever seen and that’s what sets him apart. He can do whatever you want him to do,” said Duncan Taylor, Taylor Made president and chief executive officer. Frank Taylor concurred with and amplified on his brother’s comments. “He is the smartest horse I’ve ever been around in my life. He is just so smart it’s unbelievable,” Frank Taylor said,

explaining that California Chrome displays his intelligence by doing things like carefully rolling on a regular basis, which keeps his back in proper alignment while he is experiencing the rigors of racing and training. His intelligence also is a key factor in how he can be urged from the gate, as Espinoza asked at the start of the Pacific Classic, but then come back to his rider, unflustered, and gallop along at a more moderate pace until accelerating again to the finish.

“We keep a running list of horses we want, like a wish list, and usually we don’t get them because they cost too much,” Frank Taylor said. “Going into the Belmont (Stakes), people were talking about (California Chrome) being a $20 or $30 million horse— huge numbers—and we couldn’t afford that. Everybody was trying to buy him, and then he got beat. And after that, he had a bad campaign the next year and then the ownership (co-owners and breeders Perry Martin and Steve Coburn) got to fighting. We were still tracking it and calling—we were interested in the horse— “You can see how smart he is—Victor can hustle him right out and then Perry Martin called us and said that Steve Coburn was of the gate, push him out of the gate, and when he backs off, interested in selling his part. So, they came (to Kentucky) and (California Chrome) will just settle right down wherever (Victor) visited a few farms, and we met with them and talked with them wants. If you look at his last three races,Victor sent him right out and hit it off. We ended up buying out Steve Coburn’s part. We of the gate hard, then (California Chrome) will just turn right could have never bought (California Chrome) if he had won the off and relax and come right back to him,” Frank Taylor said. “A Triple Crown, but things just worked out.We just got lucky,”Taylor lot of horses won’t do that. But he’s so smart, he’ll do it,” Taylor continued. “He was like the hero horse and everybody liked him, continued. and then the ownership got into the negativity and that sort of surrounded him. I think a lot of our competition backed out and “He knows when a race is coming and he’s ready. He got in that weren’t that interested in him. But the horse hadn’t changed, paddock the other day and he had his game face on and he was it was just the situation that had changed. And then, when we ready to run. He gets that look on his face like ‘I’m going to get bought into him, we were just buying to stand him at stud,”Taylor somebody.’ He’s not just a laid back pushover; he’s very studdish. said in noting one of the more intriguing twists in the story. While When he sees some mares, he gets all worked up, but he can turn they were not counting on returning California Chrome to racing, it off, too,” he added. he responded so well to rest and therapy at the farm that he became ready to take on the world. The Taylors began tracking California Chrome to see if they could acquire him for stud duty as he was basking in the limelight as California Chrome arrived at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, a three-year-old who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Kentucky, after a fruitless trip to England, during which he did not Stakes, surpassing all the colts of his generation with fancier race following his runner-up effort to Godolphin’s Prince Bishop pedigrees. It took relatively equal measures of determination and in the 2015 Dubai World Cup. He was examined by renowned good fortune to make the deal happen. equine orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage, who prescribed INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

49

lots of paddock time to encourage circulation to heal his bone bruising. Bramlage also forecast that California Chrome could be just as good in future racing if he was given enough time to heal. The Taylor Made staff then went to work and brought in specialists including chiropractor Shirley McQuillan, who worked on his alignment. The horse also had a massage therapist kneading his muscles,Taylor said. “We took his shoes off and let his feet grow out. We did a lot with him.We were feeding him four times a day and keeping him out on the grass, that was the main thing. Dr. Bramlage wanted him out a lot in the paddock, so we were keeping him out 1618 hours a day. In 90 days, he put on 190 pounds—he just blossomed,”Taylor recalled. “When I flew out with him to Los Alamitos (Race Course) and we got him off the van and Art and (his son and assistant) Alan (Sherman) saw him, they just couldn’t believe it. He had a big crease down his back and was all dappled out and was swinging his tail up over his back—he was just like a new horse.” From that moment last October, California Chrome has been undeniable, unbeatable. In five races beginning with the San Pasqual Stakes on January 9 and including the Dubai World Cup and the Pacific Classic, he has banked $6.93 million for Taylor Made, Martin and what FrankTaylor refers to as the “super syndicate” of breeders who have joined Taylor Made in investing in him.The returns have been so great that ownership group decided to give part of the horse’s earnings to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of America’s leading cancer research funding organizations. 50

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

The ownership group is international and includes Japan’s Dr. Masatake Iida of Chiyoda Farm; Virginia Kraft Payson, who bred champions St. Jovite, Vindication and Farda Amiga through her Payson Stud; Kiki and Louise Courtelis, who race 2015 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria; Mike Stinson, who campaigned unbeaten mare Peppers Pride, and Jan Van de BosNaify, whose bloodstock holdings include the $2.2 million broodmare purchase Up, a Group 2 winner by Galileo. There are 50 shares in the syndicate, with Martin and Taylor Made holding the largest number of shares,Taylor said. While the racing world waits to see if California Chrome can continue to dominate American racing and earn the title of the world’s highest rated racehorse on the World Racehorse Rankings for 2016, in addition to a second American Horse of the Year crown following his 2014 coronation, the investors also are waiting. They likely won’t know until early November if they will be trying to collect more prize money from the star in a 2017 campaign or attempting to send him the most ideal mares for mating once breeding season begins in February. “Some great, great people have already committed some great, great mares to him. So I think, whenever he retires, he’s going to be getting a hell of a good bunch of mares,” Frank Taylor said. In the meantime, Taylor Made is working on advertising and other promotion of the superstar, but in reality, that work is secondary to what California Chrome is doing on the racetrack. “He’s marketing himself right now,” Taylor observed of California Chrome’s racing feats. “We really don’t have to do anything.”

FIRST YEAR SIRES Yearlings by one of the most exciting groups of first-year stallions in recent memory will be launched to the world at the Keeneland September yearling sale, taking initial steps on a journey that will help determine which of their promising progenitors might become leading sires in the sale ring and on the racetrack.

D

ubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom and his fellow Kentucky Derby winner Orb will lead the way along with multiple English Group 1 winner Declaration of War.

But there are at least 20 other first-year stallions with offspring in the six books of the 13-session Keeneland sale, the world’s largest yearling marketplace, which will be conducted from September 12-24. The 798 yearlings by these 23 first-year stallions equal almost one-fifth of the yearlings Keeneland has assembled 52

overall, representing 17.8% of the 4,479 horses cataloged this year. More significant than the quantity, however, is the potential quality of both the yearlings and their young sires. Claiborne Farm’s Orb, a six-year-old son of Malibu Moon out of Lady Liberty, by Unbridled, is bred for the Classics on both top and bottom, and his female family has impressive depth. His fourth dam, Laughter, is a half sister to legendary champion Ruffian and to sires Icecapade and Buckfinder. Of all the first-year stallions, Orb has the most yearlings in Keeneland’s elite Book 1, with 11 cataloged. A total of 62—or about two-thirds of Orb’s first crop of 101 foals, as reported by The Jockey Club - are in the sale overall. “They’re good-bodied individuals with a strong hind end to them,” said Claiborne’s Bernie Sams, who predicted that Orb could become “the next War Front. “They’ve sold well (so far) and the individuals I’ve seen at the sale all look well. Hopefully, it will continue,” he said. Through August, eight yearlings by Orb had been offered at auctions, with all eight reported sold for an average price of $183,125, highest of any of the first-year stallions with 54

five or more sold prior to the beginning of the Keeneland September sale. Standing for an advertised fee of $25,000, Orb is showing he can be profitable for breeders. “He’s bred good mares. He stood fairly reasonably for what he could have probably been,” Sams said.“He’s a good looking horse and he’s thrown kind of what he looks like himself, and we were able to kind of pick through what mares went to him, and there was quite a bit of demand for him starting out.” With Claiborne keeping books for its stallions lower in number than some other stud farms and generally aiming for around 120 mares in the initial book of a horse beginning stud duty, Orb covered 122 mares in his first season, with 117 and 108 in the next two years, respectively. One of the more eye-catching pedigrees among the yearlings sired by Orb in Book 1 is a colt bred by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds and consigned by St. George Sales, agent, as Hip 291. Looking at some of the other first-year stallions, Animal Kingdom is a standout by any measure. An eight-year-old who remarkably won the Kentucky Derby in his first start on dirt and who stands at Darley’s Jonabell Farm, has 63 yearlings in the Keeneland catalog, second only to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms’ Grade 1 winner Violence, who has 72. As one of the most versatile horses ever seen, with his Dubai World Cup victory scored on an all-weather track and his troubled but impressive runner-up effort to Horse of the Year Wise Dan on turf in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, Animal Kingdom has the potential to sire runners that can do anything. “Obviously, he was very versatile himself, and I’m expecting his progeny to show that same versatility,” said Darley Sales Manager Darren Fox. “They have great size and scope, great athleticism, and they all have great walks and really catch the eye from the side when they move, which is him to a T—he is just a really athletic horse.” Prior to the Keeneland sale, there had been nine Animal Kingdom yearlings offered at auction, with four sold for an average price of $156,250. The son of Brazilian-bred Leroidesanimaux out of German-bred Dalicia, by Acatenango, Animal Kingdom offers an international outcross to American

breeders, who sent him 148 mares in 2014 and 153, his biggest book to date, this year in his third season, which often is problematic for young horses seeking mates. His advertised fee has been $35,000. “Typically that should be the trickiest year in a stallion’s career, and he bred the most mares. We saw a lot of breeders coming back and we saw a lot of breeders coming back with the same mares. That just tells you that people liked what they got. Numerous people told me that their mare’s best foal was an Animal Kingdom,” Fox said. “We’re thrilled. Obviously, all the signs are positive and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing his progeny hit the track.” Among the most intriguing of the nine Animal Kingdom yearlings cataloged in Book 1 of the Keeneland sale is a bay half sister to Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Shared Account (Hip 23 consigned by Valkyre Stud, agent for Catherine Parke) and a chestnut half sister to newly minted Grade 1 winner Drefong, who won the King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga (Hip 325 consigned by Select Sales, agent for Machmer Hall). Another exciting first-year stallion is Declaration of War, now a seven-year-old by War Front and out of a half sister to Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, and he also can be expected to INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

make his presence known to buyers at Keeneland. The denizen of Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, following an initial season in Ireland, proved himself as exceptional when he finished a close third to Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic in his first and only start on dirt. Prior to the first hammer falling at Keeneland, only two yearling offspring of Declaration of War had been sold at auction in North America, averaging $225,000 on his $40,000 advertised stud fee, the highest fee of any of the first-year stallions. Ashford Manager Dermot Ryan has noted there are some key similarities between Declaration of War and top sire Giant’s Causeway. “Declaration of War has an incredibly similar profile to Giant’s Causeway, who also joined us after standing a single season in Ireland. Both were unbeaten at two, both won some of Britain’s key Group 1 races over a mile and a mile-and-aquarter, and both ran incredible races on their first starts on traditional dirt in the Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Ryan stated on Ashford’s website. “And then, of course, they’re both by top sires out of daughters of Rahy from great American families. Bred by Joe Allen in whose colors he ran, Declaration of War was one of the best yearlings ever raised here on the farm and we’re delighted to be getting him back (for stud duty).” 56

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Nine yearlings by Declaration of War are included in Keeneland’s Book 1, but only 19 overall, as many from his first crop have remained in Europe. Tattersalls has cataloged 29 yearlings by Declaration of War in Books 1 and 2 of its October yearling sale, including a half brother to 2013 European champion juvenile Toormore, while Goffs has 22 in its Orby sale at the end of September, including a half sister to St. Leger Stakes winner Rule of Law. Among the highlights of the Declaration of War yearlings cataloged at Keeneland is Hip 119, an Irish-bred half sister to Group 1 winner Maids Causeway from the family of European highweightsVetheuil and Verveine. The bay filly is consigned by St. George Sales, agent. While Declaration of War, Orb and Animal Kingdom are at the top of the list of first-year stallions represented at the Keeneland sale, they are joined by many others with outstanding credentials. Calumet’s Oxbow, a six-year-old who won the Preakness Stakes and who is by Awesome Again out of a full sister to established sire Tiznow, has pleasantly surprised observers so far with his yearlings. Eight of 9 offered prior to Keeneland have been sold at an average price of $163,125; Oxbow stood his first year at stud for $20,000.

There are only 20 yearlings by Oxbow in the entire Keeneland catalog and none in Book 1, but that is partly because Calumet owner Brad Kelley breeds up to 50% of mares in the stallion’s book each year, which has numbered around 150 mares. Kelley reportedly intends on putting as many as 18 ofOxbow’s yearlings, which generally have impressed Calumet officials, into training for next year, and Calumet has consigned some others to the Keeneland sale through agents.

Shanghai Bobby has four yearlings in Keeneland’s Book 1, including a three-quarter brother to Grade 2 winner Intense Holiday, bred by Colts Neck Stable. Catalogued as Hip 417, the dark bay or brown colt is consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent.

A trio of other first-year stallions, all Grade 1 winners, is represented by 39 yearlings each in the Keeneland catalog: Spendthrift Farm’s Flat Out, by Flatter, and Jimmy Creed, by Distorted Humor, and WinStar’s Overanalyze, by Dixie Union.

There are many other first-year stallions that could rise to the top of the group, including WinStar Farm’s Grade 1 winner Paynter, who is bred just like Oxbow as a son of Awesome Again out of a full sister to Tiznow and who has 48 yearlings in the Keeneland catalog after his nine to sell earlier Also noteworthy in the large pack of first-year stallions is 2012 averaged $147,778; Breeders’ Cup winners New Year’s Day, champion juvenile Shanghai Bobby, another Ashford stallion, by Street Cry, and Fort Larned, by E Dubai, who have 18 and who currently stands for $15,000 after beginning his stud 15 in the catalog and who respectively stand at Hill ‘n’ Dale career at an advertised fee of $20,000. GLOBE-TROTTING GROUP WINNER RETURNS HOME:

The Apache To Highdown Stud

T

he Apache’s arrival on to the green lawns of Scott Bros’ Highdown Stud that have stood so many champions over the years, is a proud moment for the farm as the son of Mogok has come full circle. The Apache looks a picture striding out next to his handler with a swagger – a dark bay with a bronze sheen on an immaculate coat, he has an electric energy about him, a horse who knows his greatness. He is acutely aware of his surroundings and every move, his expression is honest and curious. “The Apache has a genuine 121 Timeform Rating, which is only given to horses that race in Europe. I can see why he ran like he did because he is just like elastic, incredibly athletic and has great length through his back. He was the first to cover on the farm on Thursday which marked the beginning of the [southern hemisphere] covering season – I have a great gut feel about this horse and he is looking magnificent,” - strong words coming from Robin Scott of Highdown Stud, one of the oldest and consistent stud farms in South Africa in a history of almost 50 years, that has produced an abundance of Graded Stakes winners and stood many a Champion sire, including the likes of Foveros and Jungle Cove.

The Scott Bros have a strong association with Africa’s greatest horse race as breeders and owners – the Durban July, which saw wins with Politician, Devon Air and Illustrador. For the past two national racing seasons, the Scott Bros have collected Equus Awards for Champion Stayer, Wild One (a son of Mogok), and recently Champion Sprinter – Talktothestars (a son of Overlord). The Scott Bros 50 year influence on the stud book in South Africa has been enormous but isn’t limited to South Africa alone – as Robin pages through the locally produced 2016 Sires Annual, he points out horses owned or bred in various stallions pedigrees, including the third dam of top freshman sire, the German-bred Querari and the recently retired son of Dynasty, Legislate. When Robin Scott says that he has a strong gut feel about a horse – fellow breeders should be sitting up and taking notice. His gut feel is confirmed by recent Equinome test results, published by The Apache’s Hong Kong co-owner, Winston Chow, who purchased the Mogok colt at the National 2YO Sale from the draft of Robin and Des Scott’s Highdown Stud for only R80 000.Winston posted on his personal facebook page under a picture of a quality athletic plain dark bay colt in October 2010: “2007 Mogok,The Apache… only 80k but possibly group class, let’s see!Very good temperament! I like him a lot.”What prophetic words they proved to be. INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

61

“The Apache has been tested by Equinome, with results indicating that he is top class, i.e Grade 1 in GRV (Genomic Racing Value) and Grade 1 in GBV(Genomic Breeding Value) and is a C-T for Speed Gene Test,” states Winston Chow. “I see that this is highly significant because Equinome tests all horses worldwide with the same criteria and thus meaning that The Apache has the best racing and breeding genes amongst the best in the world.” The Scott Bros home-bred colt ended his career first across the line in the Gr1 Arlington Million and earned R17million in stakes in a career that saw him win and place at the highest level in four leading horse racing countries. He is the second international Group (1) winning progeny of his sire Mogok (USA), one of the best-bred stallions to be imported to South Africa who produced American Gr1 Matriarch winner, Gypsy’s Warning amongst his four Gr1 winners to date – the others being Orbison and Wild One.

began when Robin Scott purchased his fourth dam Lenore, one of the foundation mares of the great Scott Bros nursery. Amongst others, Lenore produced Leta, a Gr1 winner of the Fillies Guineas and the Cape Flying Championship. She was mated to Kimberley Kid, a stallion that was a gift to the Scott’s from Bridget Oppenheimer and a son of Wilwyn. That mating producedYasmini, who was mated to another of the Scott Bros’ multiple Champion sire Jungle Cove – to produce the brilliant Gr1 winner, Bold West and Gr2 winner Jungle Class. Yasmini also produced a winner in the USA by Plum Bold named Bold East, a horse that also finished second in the Gr2 Green Point Stakes. In turn Gr1 Gilbey’s (and 9-time winner) Bold West was mated to Dolpour, a son of Sadler’s Wells brought into Highdown Stud as a shuttle sire.

The Apache was awarded with Equus Champion 3YO Colt in 2011 after his top class Graded Stakes wins in South Africa prior to leaving for his international campaign. He was the pride of South Africa when he finished first in the Gr1 Arlington Million in the USA for trainer Mike De Kock, only to have the race result changed after interference.

The product was 4-time winner Apache Rose – herself a full sister to the multiple Stakes Placed Sugar Magnolia – and very sadly passed away in foal to Mogok a few years ago. She produced five winners from seven foals. The Scott Bros have retained The Apache’s full sister, Bold Pocahontas, for stud duties and she recently produced a lovely filly by Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade, the half-brother to dual Gr1 winner Seventh Heaven.

The Apache is a culmination of the Scott Bros’ dynasty of stallions and mares carefully mated for over four generations, he has certainly reflected his breeders and his champion lineage with his outstanding achievements. Out of Apache Rose by Dolpour, he carries a strong Highdown Pedigree that

Sent into training with Gavin Van Zyl, The Apache’s first start saw him finish six lengths off in fourth position on debut at Clairwood over 1450m. His second start at Greyville saw him finish second to the brilliant English Garden, just a neck off over 1600m. The Apache then won his next two starts at

Clairwood over 1600m and 1700m, each in dominating fashion by an average of three lengths. His first Graded Stakes debut saw him finish five lengths unplaced behind Kavanagh in a Gr3 over 1400m, but proved himself by winning the Gr2 Dingaans from Galileo’s Destiny by over a length. It was the start of a glittering high class race career – which saw him beat the best – including winning the Gr1 Champions Cup and Gr1 Daily News 2000. His run in the Durban July saw him finish just two lengths off the brilliant Igugu, to place fourth in Africa’s most exclusive race. In total he won seven times and placed 11 – amongst them locally the London News and Victory Moon Stakes. Half of his ownership was sold to Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and he was to sent into the care of top SA trainer Mike De Kock, for an overseas campaign. After enduring the arduous travel regimen for South African horses to Dubai via Mauritius, The Apache set the Dubai Carnival alight by winning the Gr2 Al Rashidiya Stakes and placing second in the Gr1 Jebel Hatta and Gr1 Dubai Duty Free.
De Kock then decided to send the Mogok colt to England for a run prior to his American trip, and he finished fourth in the Gr2 York Stakes. It was onto the Gr1 Arlington Million, and while The Apache put in a sensational run to cross the finish line a little over a length in front, the race was taken away very disappointingly over interference, in the process he defeated a number of international Gr1 winners. The pair raced neck and neck down the straight with The Apache was declared the unofficial winner but lost 64

the race on an objection.”
Reflecting on his tremendous effort trainer Mike De Kock continued: “I think he had a lot of quality horses behind him very good European horses and very good American horses.”He’s The South African pride. He ran huge!” De Kock continued on the international campaign for The Apache: “He’s gone from South Africa to Mauritius to Dubai to England, and to America in 12 months. You can’t do that with many horses but South African horses tend to deal with it.” The Apache was retired and sent back to South Africa, having won or placed in ten Group/Graded races in four different countries. Among the top horses beaten by The Apache during his globetrotting campaign were international Group/Grade 1 winners Aesop’s Fables (Prix Jean Prat), Giofra (Falmouth Stakes), Hunter’s Light (Jebel Hatta), Little Mike (Breeders Cup Turf), Ocean Park (Cox Plate), Side Glance (VRC Mackinnon Stakes), Trade Storm (Woodbine Mile) and Wigmore Hall (Northern Dancer Turf Stakes - twice). Local racing stars beaten by The Apache included the Gr1 winners Big City Life, Bravura, Buy And Sell, Dancewiththedevil, Emerald Cove, English Garden, Flirtation, Gold Onyx, Happy Landing, Igugu, Link Man, Regal Ransom, Seal and Solo Traveller. The Apache will stand alongside his sire Mogok, Miesque’s Approval, Crusade and Eightfold Path. This year The Apache is free to mares with lines of Danehill, Zabeel and Bold Ruler, it is his third season at stud and the first in the province of KZN, where he stands for just R6 000.

KZN Breeders Race Day 2016 No Worries For The Burnards

T

he KZN Breeders race day hosted annually by the KZN Breeders Club, is exclusively for KZN-bred racehorses and gets bigger and better year after year, with a total stakes on the day on offer of R2,6million for owners and trainers and incorporates the KZN Breeders Million Mile, the brain child of previous KZN Breeders Club Chairman Koos De Klerk and his Board four years ago. The race day is one of the biggest on Gold Circle’s racing calendar behind the Vodacom Durban July annually by stakes. The current Chairman of the KZN Breeders Club, Lee Scribante of Piemonte Stud comments on the day: “Its a day that is unique in South Africa and its a great opportunity for the breeders and owners to get together and celebrate the KZN racehorse. The KZN Breeders Race Day has had

66

INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

overwhelming support and we are seeing more and more horses being entered for our innovative day each year which says something, the trainers are purchasing our horses specifically and planning accordingly to enter their horses for the day.” It has been embraced and supported enthusiastically by the racing fraternity which saw a record of almost 900 entries received for the eight supporting races and approximately 140 places that make up the KZN Breeders Series on the day – each for a stake of R200 000. Over 380 breeders, owners and trainers filled the magnificent Durban View Room to capacity and enjoyed the black and white themed “Proudly KZN” day and fine dining at the luncheon.

No Worries hits the front of the field from Rabada in the yellow noseband, to win in emphatic style.

Newly crowned Equus leading National breeders Summerhill Stud produced the winners of five races on the nine race card, including the top two finish in the main race of the day – the KZN Breeders Million Mile which saw the multiple Graded Stakes performer No Worries edge out Gr1 Daily News 2000 winner, Rabada, into second place by over a length and taking home the first place stake of R625 000. There was hardly a dry eye in the winners enclosure from the winning connections of the feature race of the day, as Kahal’s courageous five year old son No Worries trounced a strong field of competitors in the KZN Breeders Million Mile – for the second time. Since the conversion of the KZN Breeders Million Mile from the original KZN Breeders 1600 (Listed) in 2012, history was also made in the process as it was the first time a horse has won the million incentive race, twice in a row. No Worries took the KZN Breeders Million Mile in 2014 when the race was run at Clairwood, after inclement weather saw the course changed at the last minute from Greyville. Referred to affectionately as “the family horse” by owner Brian Burnard with his wife Yolanda, No Worries has been a fairytale

for the passionate racing family who purchased the horse (and one of Brian’s first horses) as a colt with trainer Gavin Van Zyl for R420 000 from his breeders Summerhill Stud, at the Summerhill Summer Ready To Run Sale in February 2012. His purchase price which saw him top the sale at Summerhill on that hot day in February, pales in comparison to his earnings which stands at close to R3million – for a consistent record of 6 wins and 16 places, with a Timeform Rating of 105 and multiple feature places at the major racing centres around South Africa. Out of Rambo Dancer mare Coastal Waltz, No Worries is a winner of the Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge, and finished only a nose behind Vercingetorix in the Gr1 Daily News 2000 – with the likes of Capetown Noir, Love Struck, Wylie Hall, Wild One, Yorker,Tellina and War Horse finishing behind him. His grey halfsister made the news at the National Yearling Sale in 2014 when she was knocked down for R1,4million. Mike Azzie’s dual Gr1 winner Rabada, a handsome son of Brave Tin Soldier owned by Markus and Ingrid Jooste, was an exciting entry into the KZN Breeders Million Mile and the Summerhillbred had been entered to run in the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July just a week later – a double that Kahal Gr1 winner Love Struck INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

had attempted in previous years. Rabada earned a cheque of R200 000 for second place and was subsequently scratched from the Durban July field in the week leading up to Africa’s greatest horse race. The KZN Breeders Million Mile field included previous winner (and Gr2 winner) Bezanova, Scottsville record holder Humidor who was going over the 1600m for the first time, and multiple Graded Stakes Placed Malak El Moolook as well as Gr1 placed Kahal filly Intergalactic, endorsing a quality field once more again this year. The KZN Breeders Series of eight races yielded exciting results, with Summerhill-bred Witchcraft – who had won the Gr3 Oaks at Scottsville over 2400m in her previous start, making it a 1-2 in the Spring Valley Stud KZN Breeders 1900 for the successful combination of Sean Tarry and Chris Van Niekerk, while previous winner Enchanted Silk (by Kahal) finished a length off Witchcraft under Champion jockey S’manga Khumalo. Count Von Count yielded a surprise win under Lyle Hewitson for Tony Rivalland and owner Mary Liley - the full brother to Gr2 winner Heaps Of Fun delivered a three quarter length 68

win in the Eightfold Path KZN Breeders 1200 Juvenile race for colts and geldings at big odds of 25/1. It was a double on the day for sire Visionaire on the day as multiple Graded Stakes Placed Lala won the Piemonte Stud KZN Breeders 1600 for fillies and mares. In addition to the KZN Breeders Series of races offering R1,6million in prize money on the day, the winning and placed trainers all received incentive vouchers towards the purchase of a KZN-bred yearling from the Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale a week later. Lee Scribante emphasises the ‘ripple effect’ it has on the racing industry overall: “An off shoot from our KZN Breeders race day is that its a big attraction to purchase our KZN horses from our regional KZN Yearling Sale which takes place three days later. The sale has boosted its quality over the years and becoming immensely popular amongst buyers. In addition, the sale has yielded the likes of Gr1 winners Wild One, Louis The King, overseas campaigners’ Same Jurisdiction and Happy Valentine, to name but a few. Of course in turn, the incentive race for this sale – the KZN Yearling Sale Million run on Vodacom Durban July day - is a great feather in our cap and we are very proud of what we are achieving in our province!”

hen Gavin Lerena won the Victor Ludorum at the 2009 International Jockeys Challenge in South Africa while competing against the likes of Frankie Dettori, Mick Kinane and Richard Hughes, it barely caused a ripple in the racing world. He was after all competing in his own backyard on familiar tracks and horses he knew. Six years later though, on a wet Hong Kong evening at the inner city Happy Valley track, Lerena stood on the podium as the winner of the Longines Hong Kong International Jockeys’ Challenge, having soundly beaten some of racing’s superstars such as Joao Moreira, Ryan Moore, Victor Espinoza and Silvestre de Sousa. This time the racing world sat up at took notice. Where did this unknown rider come from and what was his history?

Gavin Juan Lerena was born on the 2nd of July 1985 into South African racing royalty. His great grandfather and grandfather were both trainers, while his great uncle Frederick Chapell, a former jockey, had trained the 1957 G1 Durban July winner, the filly Migraine. His uncle Anton also joined the training ranks, while another uncle, Spike Lerena, also a former jockey, trained the mighty Jungle Rock. And cousin Brandon Lerena, also a jockey, often competes against Lerena. Yet Lerena lists his father Tex Lerena, a former jockey and a previous chairman of the SA Jockeys’ Association, as one of his greatest role models along with Gerald Turner and Jeff Lloyd. Tex may have tried to keep a young Lerena from following in his footsteps but there was no stopping the boy, with photos aplenty of the toddler dressed in his father’s

Lerena though, had no such problems and given a ride in the first by Tony Millard, he promptly steered his That burning desire to go as fast as humanly possible on mount Medic Swordsman into third. Lerena went on as he horseback saw him enter the SA Jockeys Academy in 2002 had started, storming home on Mr Right, to snatch victory on along with well known names such as Richard Fourie, S’Manga the line, before clinching the title with a stunning victory on the Khumalo and Muzi Yeni. The overseas bug had bitten, and bitten hard. breaking Michael Roberts’ long-standing record. riding gear. “From a young age all l wanted was to follow in my father’s footsteps and be a jockey”, explains Lerena.

The humble, soft-spoken jockey gets on with most trainers and he is one of those rare jockeys that horses run for. After a narrow loss to Anton Marcus in the 2011/2012 Jockeys’ Championship, it was therefore no surprise to see him clinch the 2014/2015 title. From there it was simply a matter of time before Lerena stepped onto the international stage and into the limelight. The Longines International Jockeys’ Challenge provided just the springboard that he needed and he took full advantage, clinching the title with two victories on that rain soaked night. Many thought he was just lucky; a good draw and two good rides providing him with ample opportunity. The very tight Happy Valley track however, has been the nemesis of many a visiting international jockey. It demands that jockeys bounce their mounts out as fast as possible and go hell for leather

When the invitation came to join the Rest of the World team in the Shergar Cup, at Ascot, the bastion of English racing, he did not hesitate. Ascot however would be a track like nothing he had ever encountered. The course winds it way down to Swindley Bottom followed by the almost 23m climb up the other side. And the going is seldom on the right side of soft. Steadying a racehorse as you gallop downhill, conserving energy for the climb back up, not being tricked into going too soon in the long inviting finish and knowing that there is another nasty little rise at the 200m mark, Ascot is not easy. Something the locals know all too well, but Lerena was a newbie to this tricky course. He however knew that all too well, and he knew what he had to do. “Walking new tracks is a necessity for me. I walked all 2022m of that track twice, but what is also important for me

is to go out there with an open mind. My aim is to give each horse a happy, confident ride.” It certainly paid off, as Lerena on his very first ride at Ascot, casually steered 25/1 outsider Arch Villain to victory. In fact his ride on Arch Villain had been so impressive that one of racing’s stalwarts couldn’t help but comment “You know that is the best ride I have seen in a stayers race at Ascot. Leading all the way at a steady pace, then taking a pull to give the horse a breather and not panicking when he got passed. He left just enough in the tank to go again and win.”

next five years. This was not some favourite, this was a 25/1 outsider who was clearly out of form. The first thing I noticed was what lovely hands Lerena has. He slides the horse up the outside from that wide draw. Immediately he has formed a communication with the horse, the reins are nice and long, the horse is relaxed. He is basically pulling the strings from here on and the horse is a willing partner. It really was artistry this ride.”

Lerena went on to score a second victory aboard Danehill Kodiac in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic. In the end it was just not enough to win the Silver Saddle, with Thierry Lerena calls it keeping the horses happy, racing experts use Jarnet snatching the lead from him with victory in the last. KOJI MAEDA’S GLOBAL REACH

hile Japanese businessman Koji Maeda modestly describes his North Hills racing and breeding operation as primarily just a hobby, there should be no doubt that he is one of the world’s boldest owners who aims to collect some of the sport’s most coveted trophies. After sending his homebred Lani after America’s Triple Crown this season, Maeda paused while buying five foals during the Japan Racing Horse Association select sale at the Northern Horse Park in Hokkaido to outline his global goals. “The Dubai World Cup, Kentucky Derby, Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomph—those four are the major races in the world that I would like to win,” Maeda said with a smile. Dressed meticulously and speaking firmly yet graciously, Maeda gives the impression that when he sets out to accomplish something, he makes it happen. North Hills already has bred two winners of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), the biggest prize in racing in his homeland, in Kizuna and One and Only, and while Maeda certainly aims to add to that total, he also is keeping the

world’s elite races in sharp focus on his radar. “The racing world is now becoming smaller and smaller. When I find a suitable race for my horses, I don’t hesitate to choose any area to ship the horse,” he said. Lani shone a bright light on his owner while racing in the United States and Dubai in the first half of this year, illuminating Maeda’s commitment to sporting competition, which clearly is second to none. Lani joined Exaggerator as the only two runners to compete in all three races of the grueling American Triple Crown even though he had to travel from Dubai after winning the $2 million UAE Derby. It is difficult to imagine another owner or a trainer, at least in America, willing to ship a well-bred three-year-old halfway around the world and run in all three races of the Triple Crown. Possessing the distinctive light gray color of his sire, leading American sire Tapit, and the quirky personality that the stallion can pass along, Lani rose through social media to be a fan favorite. “In Japan, there are many Sunday Silence line horses, and many (by current leading sire and Sunday Silence son) Deep Impact. So, this is the reason why I sent mares by Sunday Silence and Deep Impact to keep them in America. I think the variation of sires in the United States is wider than in Japan, so this is the reason why I send mares to find good stallions in Kentucky,” Maeda explained. In addition to keeping mares at Lane’s End, Maeda said he also has a connection with Three Chimneys Farm via his friendship with farm Chairman Goncalo Torrealba. Maeda, who has run multiple businesses including the outsourcing company Aitec Corp. and is based in Osaka, keeps about 70 mares at his North Hills in the Niikappu area of Hokkaido. Overall, he has about 180 horses in training in Japan, and he has raced a few horses in America for years, including Forty Niner’s son Sunday Break, who finished third in the 2002 Belmont Stakes to Sarava and Medaglia d’Oro while ahead of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem. This year, Maeda bred 22 of his mares to Kizuna, his striking, nearly black son of Deep Impact who won four other group events in addition to the 2013 Tokyo Yushun and who covered around 250 total mares in his first season at the Shadai Stallion Station.

Family also is important to Maeda when it comes to his own. Some of North Hills’ best runners have run in the names of his wife,Yoko, or brother, Shinji. While his past accomplishments in racing are many, Maeda is looking forward. He spent $1.65 million on his five foal purchases at the JRHA sale, adding colts by Just a Way, Heart’s Cry,Victoire Pisa, Rulership and King’s Best to his bloodstock arsenal. He also buys at international sales; in 2015, Maeda acquired two fillies and a colt at the Keeneland September yearling sale, including a Speightstown half sister to Grade 1 winner Lochte who has been named Ten Mohs. On the track, his colors continue to fly high in Japan, with recent winners including the Deep Impact three-year-old filly Blanc Bonheur, a homebred who captured the Group 3 Keeneland Cup at Sapporo on August 28 and who was Group 1-placed as a juvenile.

prawling across 800 acres in the heart of the Bluegrass, over lush rolling pastures bounded by traditional oak board fencing, the American arm of HH. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s global Thoroughbred racing and breeding empire calls the former Jonabell Farm it’s home. With stallions in six countries around the world, the Godolphin Empire is headquartered at Dalham Hall in Newmarket, England, the world renowned Mecca of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. As a young college student, Sheikh Mohammed attended his first horse race with his brother, Sheikh Hamdan, in Cambridge, England, and the dream was born. Over the past 50 years , the global operation known as Godolphin, founded in 1992, which takes its name from one of the three foundation stallions credited with forming the roots of the modern Thoroughbred racehorse, the Godolphin Arabian, has expanded worldwide, to include operations in the U.A.E, Australia, the United Kingdom, America, Japan and recently, in China. It’s royal blue silks often grace the Winner’s Circle of racetracks the world

With a vision of hosting world class racing in Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed was behind the inaugural running of the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup, first run at Nad El Sheba in 1996 and won by America’s horse, the famous Cigar (his 14th consecutive win). In 2010, the world’s richest race was run at Meydan, a magnificent racecourse conceived by Sheikh Mohammed. The Darley operation, named for the Darley Arabian, one of the Arab world’s greatest exports, a stallion exchanged for a shipment of rifles in 1704 at Aleppo, Syria by one Thomas Darley, who shipped him to his Aldby Stud in England, where he proved to be one of the most prepotent sires of the Triumvirate of the three Foundation Sires, along with The Godolphin Arabian and The Byerly Turk. Jonabell Farm was already established as a notable breeding force in the Bluegrass when acquired by Sheikh Mohammed in 2001. Originally founded in 1946 by John A. Over 200 Stakes Winners and 14 Champions were produced at Jonabell Farm, including Leading Sire, Damascus, who as a stallion left an indelible mark on the breed, and the Bell’s homebred Breeders Cup Champion, Epitome. Never Say Die, the first American horse to win the Epsom Derby, was foaled here. Holy Bull, undefeated as a two year old, sire of Breeders Cup Juvenile winner, Macho Uno, retired to stud at Jonabell in 1995, and Affirmed, syndicated for a record at the time of $14.4 million dollars, the last winner of the Triple Crown in 37 years before American Pharoah broke that barrier in 2015,moved from Calumet Farm upon that farm’s dispersal in 1991, stood here at stud the final 10 years of his life and is buried near the Stallion Complex. Popular sires, Cherokee Run and Old Trieste, also stood at Jonabell. The Bell House, noted as the oldest brick house in Lexington, was built in 1815, and renovated in 2009 to become the imposing office of Darley’s operations in the U.S. The Bowman Cabin, built in 1799 for Abraham Bowman, who had received the land as a land grant for his service in the war, was believed to be the oldest house in Fayette County. Still standing close to the Bell House is the hand chipped stone water tower built in the early 1900’s by Ed Corrigan, former owner of Hawthorne Racecourse in Chicago.

Fast forward to the present. Passionate about breeding and racing horses, Sheikh Mohammed looks forward to each breeding season with a sense of excitement and delight. Having assembled an outstanding team to spearhead the Darley America operations, with Jimmy Bell, Dan Pride, Michael Banahan at the forefront, Darley’s presence at every event is well represented. Under the Godolphin umbrella, Darley has become the name of the bloodstock holdings, the brand to promote the stallions. In 2005 the stallions from Gainsborough Farm merged into one location and the present state-of-the-art Stallion Complex was built. It is without doubt that Darley America offers a formidable battery of stallions to discerning breeders of high class racehorses, including the following: Elusive Quality, a son of Gone West, has established himself as an exciting sire of fast, exceptional horses on four continents, including Raven’s Pass, Smarty Jones, Sepoy and Quality Road, proving his ability to advance the breed with no fewer than 12 record setters, four Champion two year olds and numerous G1 and Graded winners. Consistent sire of yearlings that have commanded figures of half a million or more, his daughter Rachel Alexandra amassed an unprecedented record on the track, awarded Horse of the Year and Champion Three Year Old Filly. A colt by Medagia d’Oro out of Spring Passion commanded a winning bid of $1,000,000 by Coolmore’s M. V. Magnier to top the first session of the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling sale, while a filly out of Distorted Passion brought a whopping $750,000 on the second day of sales. The sire of the brilliant Songbird, undefeated filly and six time G1 winner, Medaglia d’Oro will leave his mark on the breed. Street Boss, foaled the same year, and a son of Street Cry, and his fastest son, is siring precocious winners while sales of his progeny continue to soar. Bernadini, A.P. Indy’s most successful son at stud, not only won the prestigious Travers Stakes, but like the great Man ‘O War, sired two winners of the Travers (in his first two crops !). His youngsters are in high demand at the sales, commanding high figures in the millions of dollars at the sales, while his superstar son, Stay Thirsty, was accorded the accolade of “best three year old in the country“. Animal Kingdom, the only horse ever to win the

Kentucky Derby on his dirt debut, is a lightning fast son of Leroidesanimaux. An Eclipse Champion at three, winner of the world’s richest race, the G1 Dubai World Cup, began his stud career in Australia and has a promising group of youngsters there. Hard Spun, with 29 Stakes horses in his first crop, the last G1 winning son of Danzig, had the precocity and durability and speed to sprint and the endurance to run at the Classic distances. His noted son, Wicked Strong, winner of the Wood Memorial, continues to impress. Girolamo, the fastest son of breed shaping A.P. Indy, from the family of La Troienne, his first three dams are all Graded winners, family of top sire Private Account, and his sister is the dam of Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver. With his ongoing enthusiasm for contributing to the industry, Sheikh Mohammed initiated a unique program to provide for professional training and practical experience across five countries, known at first as the Darley Flying Start program.
