Team South Africa Held on 29th June through 6th July, thirteen riders had the honour of representing South Africa at the 2018 Saddle Seat World Cup competition in Lexington, Kentucky. The adventure started with two training camps to prepare for the important event in July. During the camps, held at Dream Acres Equestrian Centre in Bloemfontein and De Bosch Stables in Stellenbosch, we put in a lot of sweat, hard work and critical thought to prepare ourselves physically and mentally. On the 29th of June, our team of thirteen met up at O.R. Tambo Airport in Johannesburg in the green and gold to start the journey to the United Stated of America. The excitement was tangible, as it was the first World Cup for most of us.

On Saturday, 30 June 2018 with immense excitement we arrived in Lexington, Kentucky. The long flight couldn’t take away from our enthusiasm and determination we had for the week ahead. The day after arrival we were honoured to visit Willowbank Farm to see the great breeding stallion Undulata’s Nutcracker. After a lovely visit at Far Away Farm with Pieter and Patrice Hugo, followed by a trip to Shelbyville Show grounds, we were ready for the Monday and Tuesday practice sessions when each rider was matched with our horses within 20 minutes. Adriaan Odendaal, Carlos Tutton and Glenda Koen had the difficult task of matching the horses we drew Monday morning with the six riders on both the three and five-gaited team. A lot of thought, decision-making, quick leg-ups and help from each other went into the twenty-minute training session. We had only these few precious minutes to get to know our

horses we were to compete on later in the week. Tuesday evening we spent time with the other World Cup competitors at the Whitaker Bank Baseball Park, watching a Lexington Legends game. It was spectacular, all the riders got to know each other better and the socializing between the competitors was really a dream come true. This already amazing night was capped off by a fireworks show that can only be done in the American way!! On Wednesday, 4 July 2018, the big moment dawned! The Kentucky sun gave ‘hot summer’ a new meaning, as it reached 37 - 40˚C during the day and because of extreme heat, the competition was delayed to the evening for a cooler atmosphere for horse and rider. Teams from USA, Canada, Namibia and South Africa were all competing in the World Cup 2018. The Kentucky Horse Park was the perfect backdrop and venue for this momentous occasion. Our Protea riders gave our total focus and commitment, and we left our hearts in the show ring. We tried our best, but the USA took home both the three- and five-gaited gold medals and trophies, with South Africa finishing second in both divisions. Canada took bronze in the three-gaited and Namibia in the five-gaited. After the competition we would visit sites like the American Saddlebred Museum, where we could learn about our sports history and the legends within the sport, Kesmarc Rehabilitation Centre, where we saw interesting ways to rehabilitate injured horses. We all thoroughly enjoyed the closing reception at Spindletop Hall, forming new friendships and sharing laughs while playing social tennis and basketball. Nobody wanted to say goodbye. It was a week filled with hard work and a lot of laughter. We, as a SA Protea Team, stood together with incredible team spirit between all riders. I believe the incredible experience we had on this trip will only add to each rider’s abilities and attitude towards our wonderful sport, as well as life. We would like to say thanks to everyone who contributed to make this opportunity possible. The skilled trainers, managers, parents, supporters and the World Cup organizing committee, and all involved in the fundraising efforts and everyone that made this lifetime experience possible. It was a great privilege to be part of the Senior Protea team 2018 and the week in Lexington is a week we will remember forever!! Viva South Africa!!

Team USA World Cup. It is different from a blue ribbon. It is a competition that is elusive and mysterious. This is the perspective from two competitors who are also siblings. For many years, Saddle Seat riders compete with the goal of riding away with the blue ribbon—your name over the loud speaker. It is the proud moment when you and your partner, a four-legged wide-eyed horse enjoy a victory pass. The smiles and the satisfaction of giving it your all. Just you and your horse, he gave it his all and so did you. Then the opportunity arises for your skills to be tested and challenged. It is called the Saddle Seat World Cup. It is the opportunity of a lifetime to throw your derby into the ring and see if you have the nerve and the will to challenge your skills on a horse with whom you are unfamiliar. But first, you must start by making the Trials. That is an experience that is like no other. It is the first glimpse of the World Cup experience. It is invigorating; it is intense— the only way competitors like it. And then the team is announced. The hard work begins. The World Cup selection process is very intense. There were approximately 70 applicants to submit a video to be invited to try-outs. They chose 32 applicants to tryout at William Woods University. Out of those applicants, six made up the three-gaited team and another six for the five-gaited team. When all four countries arrived in Lexington, we all sized up the competition. The difference this time is the United States Team is a team. Not competitors. That

150 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

is what is unique. Yes, we compete throughout the show season against one another, but in a twist, we all were teammates. We helped one another, gave advice, encouraged one another and cheered for every single team member. We had a week of bonding and getting to really know one another’s likes, dislikes, fears and stories. The team bonded quickly. Among all the memories and inside jokes made within moments of the first practice, we all instantly clicked. As the practices continued, we all helped, guided and supported each other with one goal set in mind— the gold medal. We were all going to do whatever it took to make sure we all went home with one. It was so interesting to meet people from other countries and learn how countries are so different from each other. In the beginning a lot of the conversations were along the lines of “Do you guys have this..?” and “What is it like there?” By the end of the week, it was sad to leave our new friends, knowing we are all going so far away but hopefully we will get to see them again! As a lot of people know, having a sibling as a teammate can be quite interesting, but for Michael and I, it was different. The two of us are accustomed to being fierce competitors, always competing against each other for that same goal but in the end there is only one top spot. In the World Cup, we got to compete together for the same goal, we were able to achieve it together, and stand at the top together along with our team. We are the first brother-sister team ever to be on the

U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup team together. It was a very cool experience to go through all of this and have your sibling standing right next to you. It is very rewarding to know you both contributed to the team and are standing there with your team that you love dearly, and know we all did it together. The competition week was very intense. With temperatures excruciatingly hot, we were all struggling to stay hydrated and cool throughout the week. We practiced early in the morning, trying to beat the heat and we made the best out of it! With teammates coming from all different states around the world, there were lots of time changes we all dealt with. We had long days filled with practice in the mornings and activities at night. Everywhere we went we all wore our USA polo shirts and we travelled as a team. We got lots of questions and attention in public, as well as a shout out at a minor league baseball game! The crowd made everything even cooler. To look up in the stands sectioned off for the US, and see the crowd all dressed up in their USA fan gear and to see your family sitting there cheering and giving you all the support you could ever ask for, is the best feeling in the world. The crowd made it very known when a US competitor nailed it. It gave me goose bumps to hear the crowd go wild for me as I was leaving the ring. I remember the moment right before they were going to call the gold medal winners, hearts pounding, and butteries in all of our stomachs. The general happiness and joy that came over us when we were called for the gold medal. Thirteen years of hard work, countless hours and late nights spent at the barn, paid off. This was it. The moment we all worked hard for. It is such a great feeling to walk through airports and public places wearing team attire. You get questions about what the team is and it is always such a proud moment for Michael and I to say that we are a part of the U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team. It is a very rewarding and proud feeling that is unexplainable. The 2018 Saddle Seat World Cup was one of the best events Michael and I have both ever been a part of. It was the most incredible experience and one that will leave us with memories forever. We could not be more grateful and proud to be members of the United States World Cup gold medal team. So to all of those riders out there, be fierce, be hard working and stay in that saddle! You might get that chance to test those skills!

the sport and decided to enter for trials again for 2018. As true Namibians, we simply pushed ahead by calling for trials in order to select the best team followed by immediate intensive training. We were positive as we knew what an adventure awaited our experienced team. We were very privileged to have Charl Oosthuysen, a very successful South African trainer and a former Namibian World Cup rider as our coach. Many hours of hard work groomed us to compete with the best in the world and all of this during normal school hours, weekends and holidays.

real when our parents booked accommodation and made travel arrangements to support us all the way to the United States. We were fortunate that the parents of all team members could travel with us to enjoy this wonderful experience and we were all grateful for their love and support of this sport. America itself is a truly remarkable and beautiful country and we almost forgot the real purpose of our trip. Lexington is a must for any horse lover and definitely a place we would like to visit again. America was a perfect host and all arrangements were perfect and most enjoyable. There were so many highlights I can recall but maybe the best was to visit Kesmarc and also just to spend every second with the team in such a beautiful horse world. A big thank you to America, the host country, for organizing the event. The competition itself was extremely good and well organized, we will treasure this event for the rest of our lives. We would like to thank all involved for all your kindness and support and a special thank you to our sponsors, D&M Rail, Ricoh, Northern Stationaries, PEC Metering, Karen Woermann for making this dream come true. “THE CAUSE IS GREATER THAN I” “The Cause is Greater Than I.” Hershel “Woody” Williams has been fulfilling that motto for all of his life. “For as long as I can remember, he’s always raised us as a family to focus on service above self,” said Chad Graham, Williams’ grandson and President and CEO of the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation.

illiams was just 18-years-old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a call to action for Woody and he would attempt to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. At 5-foot-six, he didn’t meet the height requirement and the USMC turned him down. Needing to find work,Williams began working as a taxi driver near his home in Fairmount, WV. One of his responsibilities as a cabby in those days was delivering Western Union telegrams from the War Department to military families notifying them of the death of their Loved One. For the first time, Williams experienced first-hand the grief and enduring sacrifice of Gold Star Families. “He had no background in grief counseling or military protocol training, he was just a country boy who was delivering notice of death to these families. That had a huge impact on his life,” recalled Graham. By 1943, the strain on the military was enough that they lowered the height requirement allowing Woody to join the United States Marine Corps. He was sent to the South Pacific and would first see combat on the island Guam. After securing the island of Guam, Woody and his comrades in the 3rd Marine Division were sent to Iwo Jima. While serving in the war, he had the job of a demolitions expert, but had also been trained on the flamethrower. Being a flamethrower operator required you haul a seventy-pound pack on your back which included tanks full of combustible fuel. This required the help of an assistant, who carried his canteen and gear for the flamethrower operator. During the battle of Iwo Jima, Woody’s assistant was Vernon Waters, his best friend since boot camp.Together the two young men made a pact that should only one survive, the other would return their heirlooms back to the other’s family. Williams at the time was engaged to be married to

his beloved Ruby and wore her small ruby ring. Waters wore his father’s family heirloom ring. On February 23, 1945, the same day as the iconic flag-raising atop Mt. Suribachi, Williams’ life would change forever. Woody and his fellow Marines encountered the enemy deeply entrenched in groups of pillboxes, [reinforced concrete bunkers], which stymied the advance. It was at this time that Woody’s commanding officer gathered he and several other Marines in a shell crater to develop some kind of strategy. Woody was asked if he thought he could do something with the flamethrower, he has been told that his reply was simply, “I’ll try…”. Equipped with his flamethrower and covered by only four riflemen, Williams fought desperately for four hours under terrific enemy small-arms fire and repeatedly returned to his own line to prepare demolitions charges and obtain serviced flamethrowers. His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism in the face of a ruthless enemy resistance were directly instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended strong points encountered by his regiment. By knocking out the network of pillboxes, the enemy line was opened up, allowing the Marines to advance to their objective. Link to his official citation: http://hwwmohf.org/woody-williams. html Woody’s actions that day resulted in him being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Williams was injured on Iwo Jima, taking multiple pieces of shrapnel to his leg, but continued to fight through the end of the battle. His valor would also earn him a Purple Heart. After Iwo Jima had been taken and secured, Williams traveled to Washington D.C. where President Harry Truman hung the Congressional Medal of Honor around Williams’ neck. As Truman proudly presented the Medal,

the child, telling him to stop climbing on the monument, but as he watched, he saw the curiosity in the boy’s eyes. It seems that everyone responds differently to the monument.

The work ethic that Williams instilled in his family holds true today, and he made clear to both Todd and Chad that integrity was the most valuable thing they have.

When his gaze turned, he noticed a young woman walking towards him with tears in her eyes. “Are you Chad,” she asked. When he responded yes, she gave him a huge hug and proceeded to tell him how grateful she was for the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument they were now both standing by. She was a Gold Star Wife and that young boy, a Gold Star Son, had lost his dad. As she explained how much the monument meant to her and her child, they both watched as the boy stood in the silhouette of the Service Member in the monument. To that boy, that monument represented his father, who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Chad Graham realized the scope of what his grandfather’s project was doing.

“I think one thing that is often lost in today’s times is that integrity,” said Todd. “His integrity is different than anyone else I have ever known. I remember I got in trouble one time and I got grounded for a month – after about two weeks my grandmother begged and pleaded with him that it was enough and that I should be let off the hook. But something that he said to me then has always stuck. ‘If I let you off now, then I’m a liar’,” recalled Todd. “He told me, ‘I said a month and it’s a month. And you’ll never believe me again if I don’t stick to my word’.” Todd has already known that his granddad would stick to his word, but that cemented any doubt that could have crept in, and it’s something he would never forget. Both brothers strive to follow those family values; honesty and integrity, and especially hard work. “He taught us to never do anything without giving your absolute best,” added Chad. Graham watched from a distance as a young boy ran his fingers along the hard, cool black granite. The boy stood inside the silhouette of the fallen service man in the monument mimicking the body’s pose. His first thought was to call out to

“That moment changed my life,” explained Graham. There are so many emotions. “You see joy, and you see reliving that loss, and you see them [Gold Star Families] celebrating their Loved One.You see them connecting with this monument.” For Graham things had truly come full circle. The Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation first started in 2010 by himself and Williams’ other grandsons. Woody had started traveling more and speaking as the last living recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Pacific Theatre in World War II. His wife of more than 60 years, Ruby Dale Williams, had passed away. Ruby helped Williams realize that he had much work to still do in his life, and in her loss, Woody saw the need to pick up her torch of service as well.

“Woody saw the need that we as a Country should honor these Gold Star families,” explained Graham. realized that it was really just the beginning. Since then it has grown tremendously and continues to do so. “There is truly a significant need for this,” reiterated Graham.

In the beginning, the goal was just to erect one Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. They started of course at their roots in West Virginia. But once that one monument went in, the family

more in progress, and an additional 50 projects that have been proposed. At the end of the year they expect to have 125 ongoing and completed projects. One of the amazing things that Graham has seen during his work with the Foundation is the sense of community that is fostered in all the towns across the country where monuments are being erected. For example, in the small town of Beebe, Arkansas, two young Veterans came to Graham and said they had experienced the loss of their friends in service and had seen the sacrifice made by Gold Star Families. This sparked something inside of them to join the mission and establish a Monument in their community. Even-though they lived in a small town, the overwhelming support of this project allowed them to raise the funds and complete the project in record time. This was proof that these Monuments are both needed and possible in cities, towns, and communities of every size all across the nation. “It’s not just a monument but having a presence there perpetually that goes far beyond us. The community is raising awareness and it allows them the opportunity to support these Gold Star families. We get to work with all these amazing people, to pull these things off. We are sewing ourselves into the fabric of all of these communities.”

for education, life insurance, etc. But of course, with privacy concerns, this information isn’t just freely given. What Graham has seen happen is the word of mouth spreading from Gold Star Families to others in their community. “We have seen them sharing the information with their community. These families want to be involved and are overwhelmingly supportive,” added Graham. In his role as CEO and President, Chad works closely with his grandfather on a daily basis serving Gold Star Families, growing the Foundation, and dealing with the monument project’s progress.Todd serves as the chairman of the board of directors and manages to find the time to stay involved in many of the daily aspects of the organization. “I’m very lucky to be part of the foundation right now and it’s a huge responsibility. Right now, I’m Chairman of the Board, and I’m very honored to do that. Our board of directors are all volunteering their time, and my responsibility is to try to help implement the projects that we are working on, and to try to help my brother in any way I can as far as support and knowledge and encouragement,” said Todd.

“Everyone is involved in some form or fashion,” added Chad. Both of Woody’s daughters Tracie Ross and Travie Ross have been a part of the Foundation since the beginning and continue to work to further the mission. t was 2007 and Elizabeth Shatner was watching the news one evening when she saw a story about the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and alleged neglect, including physical deterioration of the housing quarters, and other poor conditions that veterans were returning to after war. She was disturbed by the reports and, after some soul searching, she asked herself what she could do about it. “It came to me to use what I know. And what I know are horses,” said Shatner. “I also have a 37-year-old non-verbal nephew who has seizures every day of his life, and he thrives with equine therapy two days a week. In addition, I had a family member with Down syndrome. In the 1960’s, I accompanied my mother while she volunteered for Farm Club, a non-profit utilizing horses and other farm animals in health programs for those with Down Syndrome. There is no doubt that I was impacted and inspired by those early experiences with challenged folks who were helped by the animals.” Elizabeth grew up with horses, riding and studying them from a young age; and after attending Purdue University in Animal Science and then Butler University in telecommunications, she left college to pursue the horses. After college, she dedicated

her entire life to the horse industry, working with well-known and established businesses in the Arabian and Saddlebred breeds as a trainer, instructor, and judge, and serving on several equine industry boards. It was through these equine-related activities that she had been, without realizing it, treating herself for her own personal experiences with trauma. “Once I recognized that, it gave me extreme empathy for our soldiers who were coming back, and their families, who were dealing with PTSD.” Feeling a need to help, Elizabeth began to research ways she could do just that. Having married William Shatner in 2001, she had also decided to step back from horse training and instructing as a profession. She had been working with her husband, co-hosting sitting on committees for the Hollywood Charity Horse Show, and in that found inspiration to expand her vision for military. “I had to help. America already has a lot of horse shows and a vibrant equine industry. When you combine that with the all the other historic connections between humans and horses, it just makes sense. We don’t have to re-invent the wheel, we can bring the horse show industry’s resources to bear on supporting those that sacrificed

for us,” she stated. In 2010, the Shatners’ 12-time World’s Champion Standardbred road horse, All Glory, was chosen as the celebration model at Breyerfest. “The Standardbred is of war horse descent and I thought what a great name for the project. It was patriotic, and All Glory had a huge heart, just like our American veterans,” explained Shatner. “So he became the poster horse for this project.” The All Glory Project was officially created as a 501c3 nonprofit to promote, foster and support programs that utilize animal-assisted therapies in aiding Military Veterans and their families. “The Project also recognizes our four-legged friends that have served humankind so bravely over the centuries. We are a non-profit campaign of consciousness to thank our wounded heroes, human and animal alike,” said Shatner. While at the Kentucky Horse Park for Breyerfest, Elizabeth was introduced to the Kentucky Governor’s wife, Jane Beshear, who is also a horse person, while serving with her on the Governor’s Advisory Board for the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Mrs. Beshear introduced Elizabeth to connections at the Central Kentucky Riding for Hope Center in the Horse Park, and they said they wanted to do something within their center specifically to support veterans. “So, we utilized the funds earned from a Breyerfest

exhibition and donated it to their first pilot program for military veterans,” said Shatner. “Now they have more than four programs for both veterans and their families.” Central Kentucky Riding for Hope currently offers Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship for Adult Veterans. Through the program they spend two hours weekly learning horsemanship, developing riding skills, and learning about horse behavior. In addition, they ride in an indoor arena and on the trail through the Kentucky Horse Park while they socialize with other veterans. A PATH, International certified instructor teaches all lessons. They also offer equine facilitated workshops which are non-mounted.These workshops help veterans and their families build skills needed for resiliency and transitions, including suicide prevention and addiction recovery, as well as a children’s grief camp. In addition, the center has a six-week program that focuses on learning skills for healthy transitions between military assignment and civilian responsibilities. The programs through Central Kentucky Riding for Hope are just one example of many throughout the country. All of these programs can only survive with the help of organizations like The All Glory Project. While these services clearly make a positive, life-changing impact on veterans; equine assisted therapy is still not widely-practiced, and therefore most often not paid for by insurance. be released, but those in the industry have high hopes for that happening. In the meantime, it’s organizations like The All Glory Project that are trying to fill the funding gap. It’s Shatner’s hope that equine assisted therapy can continue to gain acceptance in the military with veterans and their families. The All Glory Project also sees the opportunity for these veterans to fill a void in the equine industry. “We want to help provide vocational training for military veterans to get involved in the equine service industries, through these programs that already exist,” explained Lindstrom. “The therapy facility is already capable of handling the veterans. This is one of our initiatives for the upcoming year.” This idea is not far-fetched, as they have already seen great success from graduates of these therapy programs across the country. One example is Jymie Darling, a veteran that has done equine-assisted therapy and now works in the office at Shadow Hills Riding Center, a facility that has an equine-assisted therapy program and also runs a program called Saddles for Soldiers, which is partially funded by The All Glory Project. Darling was a munitions systems specialist in the United States Air Force during Operation Desert Storm. Commonly referred to as part of the AMMO troop, she was a bomb builder and suffered from two traumatic brain injuries while

serving her country. “One was a missile component came off the line as we were building it and I got hit in the head,” recalled Darling. “I suffered six months of memory loss and the second TBI was an explosion which gave me a bomb blast concussion with a secondary traumatic brain injury.” For more than twenty years Darling tried to navigate the VA system and suffered silently with severe PTSD. Finally, after a suicide attempt left her in a coma for ten days, the VA convinced her to come out to Shadow Hills Training Center and try the Saddles for Soldiers program, sponsored by The All Glory Project. “The equine therapy has inspired me to volunteer here in the office, and work with the computers, and also with the horses. I come out and can smile and actually plan tomorrow. This is something I haven’t done since Desert Storm. I never planned tomorrow.” Darling explained that because of the program in conjunction with program director, Johnny Higginson, she has a purpose in life and finally has peace. “The horse doesn’t judge and doesn’t look at me and say anything. All he cares about is that I’m there right now, and all I have to care about is him and I at that moment. That I’m doing the right thing for him, paying attention to his body and my body. I never knew how anxious I was until The All Glory Project put me in front of a horse, and that horse reacted to me. That’s because it’s what was going on in my mind. I have learned that when horses star t to behave nervous or anxious and uptight, that really that’s me and it makes me sit down and stop

and think and breathe and get out of my head.” Lindstrom explained that they hope to become like the United Way in a sense. “We want to be a source for reliable and credentialed organizations. So that, when you donate to The All Glory Project, you know that you’re helping qualified programs.” The All Glory Project has already been recognized for the quality of its work. In her role as the organization’s president and founder, Elizabeth Shatner has been presented with the Women’s Horse Industry Network’s WHINNY Award, the BraveHearts’ Heart of a Hero Award, and the Saddles for Soldiers Award. In addition, the organization has received application-based funding from blue chip organizations like Wells Fargo and the United Professional Horseman’s Association, and from major industry supporters like Joe Walsh’s VetsAid and Brad and Kim Paisley. Since its inception, The All Glory Project has granted nearly $250,000 to worthy therapy centers and programs. It’s important that they continue to raise money because these therapy programs are working so hard and depend on such outside sources. “We are a sector-supporting organization,” explains Lindstrom, “our overall goals are to do anything we can to increase the availability of these programs for veterans around the country, to help the programs remain viable and obtain the training and credentialization their staff and leadership need, and to join up with other industries and sectors to create a network that can support this important work. We also need to spread the word beyond the equine world. If we only promote within the bubble, then we are missing millions of people who can really benefit from discovering the power of this therapy. We want to make it more commonplace.”

Success Story: The All Glory Project is a major funder of the Shadow Hills Riding Club’s Saddles for Soldiers Equine Assisted Therapy Program, photographed here in a group riding session. Laura Waller, a female veteran in the group, explains its impact: “As a veteran suffering from PTSD due to Military Sexual Trauma, I struggled with managing my life. I lost several jobs, became homeless, and barely managed to get through the day without feeling worthless and defeated. Before I entered the Equine program at Shadow Hills I had been attending therapy regularly but still struggled with thoughts of suicide. My friends told me about the program and quite honestly, I didn’t believe the program would help. But I was desperate. Deep down, I really didn’t want to kill myself, but I didn’t know how to stop the nightmares, the anxiety attacks, the constant fear of threat and the overwhelming feeling of depression and isolation. I reached out to Program Manager, Johnny Higginson and we scheduled an appointment to tour his facility. He explained to me what equine therapy does, but I was still a skeptic. My first experience in the Veteran program I had a major meltdown and struggled to keep my focus and keep myself engaged in the program. I distanced myself from the participating group and cried in the corner of the arena. Johnny saw me struggling and immediately intervened by having me ride one of his therapy horses. After the first session, I explained to him what had happened and told him how I felt uncomfortable with the group and considered not going back. Johnny asked me to meet with him again to try a private lesson. During the private lesson he introduced me to one of his female volunteer trainers where I began doing one-on-one therapy at the facility. The program changed my life. I have more confidence in myself and I sleep as I never slept before. My anxiety attacks are less overwhelming and I stopped thinking about suicide. In fact, I am no longer homeless, I have a job and I am finally starting to pay off some of my bills. I don’t make a lot of money, but I have hope that this beginning I will be able to build myself a better and more successful tomorrow. I am not sure what it was that changed me; the facility, the horses, the kindness and generous spirit of Johnny Higginson, the volunteer staff, or all of it combined. I do know that I feel more alive after every session and Shadow Hills Riding Club has become a sanctuary for me; a place that I can feel safe, learn about myself, and find strength and courage to continue to face and conquer inner challenges.”

TEAM KALARAMA

n the Saddlebred world, the name Kalarama is synonymous with success. The renowned training barn has been around for decades. With Larry Hodge at the helm, national and world titles have accumulated to impressive heights, forever embedding Kalarama in the history books as an industry leader. Not only has Larry Hodge done it all (and practically won it all), but he has helped many others build a career with his knowledge and guidance. With a discerning eye for talent, Larry Hodge has thoughtfully cultivated confident and capable horsemen to compliment his abilities and create a powerhouse Kalarama team. Such known trainers as Harrison Shiflet, Brian Chappell, Gregory Maldonado and Neil Visser got their starts at Kalarama. These days, Larry works with recently married couple Daniel Lockhart and Kelly Self Lockhart. The statuesque young couple is clearly driven to follow in Larry’s professional footsteps and leave a legacy of their own. Judging from the countless Kalarama wins over merely the past few years, it seems this trio is a tour de force.

164 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

Danny and Kelly came from different backgrounds, but with the same passion for the multitude of tasks falling under the horse trainer job description. In a seemingly dwindling pool of aspiring young trainers, there are even fewer with the willingness and work ethic necessary to rise to the top. Yet, following entirely different trajectories, Danny Lockhart and Kelly Self landed in the same place and are managing to do it side by side as a couple. Danny started riding when he was seven years old with his Aunt Caroline and cousin Alex in Chislet, England, a village in Kent in the southeast. Aunt Caroline owned a boarding barn with a lesson program. She had a customer who owned several Morgans and another customer who had a Saddlebred mare. “We would go to the ‘saddle seat’ horse shows. Although the shows were small, I was drawn to Morgans and Saddlebreds as opposed to the more popular Hunters and Jumpers,” said Danny. It was on this circuit that he met Lionel Ferreira, who worked for John and Angela Bulmer at Monnington Morgans in Hereford. Upon completing secondary school, Danny went to work for the Bulmers. “I traveled with Lionel in the summer of 2004 to Kentucky, where he took Saddlebreds to show and sell. We

stayed at Melissa Moore’s for that summer. After that, I knew I wanted to be here permanently. After talking to Melissa, I came back to work for her in November 2004. I stayed with her a little over a year and then took a job as a groom at Kalarama in January 2006,” explained Danny. Across the Atlantic, Kelly’s sister, Megan started taking lessons at Pine Hollow Farms with Kathleen Ross when they were about 11 or 12 years old. For a while, Kelly watched her sister’s lessons, eventually ready to give it a try. At that time, she was into gymnastics and her mother made her choose one or the other. Fatefully, Kathleen overheard and offered that Kelly could work one day a week to earn a riding lesson, so as not to choose. “I did this for about a year until I realized tall girls do NOT make co-ordinated gymnasts, but can ride horses,” Kelly said. “I eventually talked my Dad into buying my sister and I a show horse and we put him in training at Taylor Creek Stables with Wes and Sena Bowling.” When she went off to college, her affinity for horses did not lessen. She had to promise her parents that she would finish college, despite her desire to leave and move to the Saddlebred mecca—

Kentucky. She spent her summers working for Wes and Sena. Upon graduation from Central Michigan University with a degree in Communication Disorders, Kelly was slated to head off to graduate school for speech pathology. In a last minute twist, she completely changed course. The pull of the horse business was too great for Kelly, so just a week before starting grad school in September 2010, she went to work for Melinda Moore instead. About three years later, when an opportunity arose at Kalarama, Kelly “took the jump.” Dating for about three years, both she and Danny had some reservations about working together, but the pros outweighed the cons and they forged ahead. As any couple that works together can attest, working side by side 24/7 in a sometimes stressful job can be trying. It takes a special pair to be able to handle that unique situation and it soon became clear that it was the right decision for them. Half a decade later, they continue to successfully worked together with Larry Hodge. They were married September 2, 2017. Both Danny and Kelly have great respect and high praise for

their boss and mentor Larry Hodge. “Mr. Hodge has a way of bringing out the best in the people who work for him, whether it is caretakers or trainers. His positive outlook on everything is infectious. He is a huge motivator and keeps us pumped up and wanting to improve all the time. He strives for perfection and no detail is too small,” reflected Kelly. Speaking for both of them about their positions at Kalarama, she continued: We love the quality of horses we have to work with and the great people that are taking care of them. The guys that are here are like family to us. We have a great boss who lets us make mistakes but also gives us the chance to fix them. We feel very fortunate to be in the position we are, and never take it for granted. Like all good professional relationships, the feeling of respect is mutual. Larry is grateful to have such a professional, capable and ambitious couple working for him. He feels that Kalarama’s continued high achievement is the result of a team effort. “We leave our egos at the door here. It’s like a great sports

166 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

team - you gotta surround yourself with good people,” said Hodge. “We have great clients. The sky’s the limit. We hope to hold everything together.” Appropriately feeling like he “has nothing to prove,” Larry is generous with opportunities for both Danny and Kelly. In 2012, Danny campaigned and triumphed in the three gaited division with Platinum Moon to win the World’s Grand Champion Three-Gaited title. Also, Kelly proudly rode Kalarama’s Studious Girl to become World’s Champion Three Year Old Park in 2014. But, true to their team approach, both Danny and Kelly agree that they are equally as proud of Kalarama’s amateurs and junior exhibitors when they enjoy success. They take joy from the accomplishments of each of the clients and it shows, leading to more wins along the way. Longtime client and owner of many world champions, Misdee Wrigley Miller weighed in on the team: “A triangle is the strongest geometric structure; Danny and Kelly have brought that structure to Kalarama training. The combination of horsemanship and attention to detail between Larry, Danny, and Kelly make them a singular force

to be reckoned with! Beyond that, Danny and Kelly are two of the nicest people we have ever been around; they care deeply about the horses and the clients. We all know that this can be a tough industry but their great attitude, win or lose, make the experience worthwhile and fun.” Ryan Visser, one of the barn’s junior exhibitors and daughter of Neil Visser and Deborah Orr, won a few major world titles in 2017 with the help of Kalarama. She was effusive in her praise: “I’ve learned so much from Danny and Kelly. If you ask anyone at Kalarama, they’ll say Danny and Kelly are the perfect team. We like to have our laughs, but when it’s time to go it’s time to go. They’ve taught me so much about sportsmanship, horsemanship, and how to work hard for what you want. It’s been so amazing to be a part of such a great team.” Danny and Kelly Self Lockhart are perpetuating the Kalarama dynasty. They are to be admired for their dedication to each other and their craft. With a long road ahead, they, like

their industry, will evolve and grow. Their outlook on the industry says a lot about them as individuals. “It is important to maintain relationships and not burn bridges in order for everyone to strive and succeed. In order for us to all evolve as a whole we need to do our part; and that is more than just waking up in the morning and training horses or giving lessons. It’s becoming involved with the Association, our horse shows, getting your judge’s card or becoming a committee member for a topic you are passionate about,” they said. Interestingly, it seems “Teamwork” is more than a buzzword at Kalarama. It is a way of life and it is working. From Larry, to Kelly and Danny, to their esteemed clients, the word repeatedly came up, making it apparent that it truly is the culture there. In a competitive industry that can sometimes lend itself to competing egos and mistrust, the Kalarama triangle, as Ms. Wrigley Miller called it, is unique.Their varying backgrounds and strengths produce a 1 +1 +1= 4 kind of effect, a rarity indeed. The lesson is that team Kalarama keeps its eye on the prize.
