VALLEY’S RISING MUSIC A DREAM REALIZED FOR MOUNTAIN VIEW STABLES
T
rue to its name, Mountain View Stables is located in Eastern Cape. Mountains encircle the property in a magnificent array, the elegant vista emboldened further by a stunningly lush landscape of fields and forest. Known to many in South Africa, Mountain View Stables offers a comprehensive variety of services and products, including everything from training, to tack, to the finest bred show horses. These days, it is kept like a well oiled machine by Irene van der Westhuizen, but the farm and particularly its breeding program has been a work in progress for nearly four decades in her family. View Stables has been no stranger to success and produced many champions along the way. Most recently, Valley’s Rising Music, lived up to his carefully cultivated bloodlines and training process. The regal chestnut stallion won the Five-Gaited Stake at Bloemfontein and made a dream come true for the family. Patriarch Charlie Bolton established the farm and started a dynamic and refined Saddlebred breeding program in 1980. Charlie had always been in love with a Racking horse. As a young boy, he would regularly walk many miles to his Granny Gushe’s farm in Couga to ride two horses: Blanco and Lieutenant. Lieutenant was a racking horse which he absolutely

The Mountain View bloodlines further procured the title for the Reserve Grand Champion Five-Gaited horse as well as winning the Grand Champion Five-Gaited horse shown by an amateur. This is the second consecutive year that the equine athletes bred out of the Mountain View bloodlines were triumphant in both the South African Five-Gaited Grand Championship divisions. About fifty years ago, he bought a horse from his uncle Tavy Bean for R40. His uncle could not ride the horse, yet Charlie taught the horse how to rack and sold him at Bertie Gruskin’s stock fair for a record R82. “The airy poise, profound athleticism, intelligence and natural beauty charmed my father into an instant admiration for the Saddle Bred,” said daughter Irene. “He claimed their unequivocal demeanor coupled with their elegance and charisma, intrigued him since his first acquaintance to this distinguished breed.”

“This name was more than just a name, it journeyed back in time, it reflected on the all the greats within him and secured a place in the history books,” said Irene. The newborn colt, now nicknamed Music, and his dam were turned out into the veld camps where they spent the next 4 months. They freely roamed the undulating hills and the dense African bushveld until sunset. This was the start of his training career, the walking, trotting and galloping all defining and toning his musculoskeletal makeup from the very beginning of his life. Tragically his dam, My Snapdragon, died when he was just four months old. He was then hand raised down at the training stables. At six months old, he joined a small herd of young colts and fillies in a separate veld camp. Here, the foals were introduced to a herd mare whose sole purpose was to take care of them. This was a new phase for Music, he loved being in kindergarten and flourished under the herd mare. He started growing and developing, exciting everyone at Mountain View as he started revealing moments of greatness on the occasional prance and frolic. At nine months old, all the colts were separated from the fillies. Music and the other colts were introduced to a gelding, the new babysitter. “As he started maturing, we noticed a unique athleticism in him. He was rapidly becoming the horse we had dreamed about. 140 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
Our excitement became difficult to contain, moonstruck by a fantasy that became real and daydreaming about what the future held in store for us,” said Irene. She went on to describe: Finally the big day arrived. It was eventually time to introduce Music into the professional life of a show horse. What a breeze, it took us an hour to introduce him to his start up trainer, Carlos, a saddle, bridle and mounting using techniques from the Monty Roberts “Join Up” process. Music continued to amaze us and took to training like a pro. We were thrilled at what we saw; Music had a distinct quality about him, something phenomenal. He progressed rapidly and all we wanted to do was share him with the world. It was difficult for the team at Mountain View to contain their excitement about the athletic young colt, presented with a great temptation to rush his foundation. Fortunately, better judgment prevailed. They progressed slowly and at the pace his young body and mind could handle. It was baby steps until he showed that he was ready to be a show horse during the winter of 2013. Their excitement was beyond measure. They decided that he would debut in the three- gaited division the following year. Music’s naturally impressive height of motion was a rare compliment to his equally outstanding

beauty. He progressed according to schedule. They entered him in the four year-old Fine Harness division at the 2015 South African Championships. Irene described, “He met our every expectation, winning his class. He became an overnight sensation, he charmed many spectators and breeders from all around the country.” That show was the turning point for everyone at Mountain View Stables. They felt that what Music had to offer was more than they had ever dared to dream. “He was more than the vision we had, he was most definitely on route to becoming a big name. He soon started becoming masculine and stud like. He started loving himself and became sportier as he matured, his athletic ability unparalleled in our breeding program,” said Irene. They spent the winter of 2015 teaching him to rack. After Bloemfontein Show, Harold Poil came for his annual hunt. “I was working Rising Music, with his Bloemfontein Fine Harness shoes on, and Harold said to lift my hands up and see if he would rack,” said Irene. Rising Music simply started racking like a pro. He adjusted to his new training routine easily, he was just a natural. They had their work cut out for them with his excessive natural motion and size. By that October they decided to give him a break from racking and qualified him at Parys Regional as a Junior Park horse. This was not where
he belonged, so after the December break they went straight back to work in January and continued racking him. He felt amazing. Music was right on track and by April 2016, we headed back to the South African Championships, this time in the five-gaited division. He was victorious. With another South African title to his name, they knew they had something extraordinary in the making. Irene and the Mountain View team gave him some time off for two months and further developed his gaits over the winter. Mares were streaming in for coverings by spring. Excited by the developments, we lost track of time and found ourselves on the doorstep of the show season and not quite ready to show. With two shows remaining; they decided to qualify him for nationals in harness. In January 2017, again they focused on the five- gaited division. They worked as hard as Music would allow up until Nationals 2017. He just kept giving, revealing more every week. He seemed to have no limits. “He was so eager to please that we had to curb his enthusiasm to prevent him from burning out,” explained Irene. “We could feel the excitement building.” They started getting visitors on Saturdays just to watch him work. Saturdays became his show THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

ucked away in Brunswick, Georgia, lies a show horse training barn called Pine Haven Stables. Christy Parker, its owner, trainer, and instructor is easy to like with a practical approach to life and a pleasant manner. She prepares her horses and students with the same good natured attitude, giving just the right balance of fun and professionalism. Competing at the highest level, Pine Haven is a place where riders are challenged to achieve without sacrificing joy in the process. Educated as a teacher, Christy is an affable, drama-free gal who understands the value of connecting with her pupils and has developed that into a thriving business focused on helping individuals reach their goals. Christy is a life-long resident of St. Simons, an island off the Georgia coast. A distinctly beautiful setting, it is known for its salt marshes and sandy beaches. It is also a unique place because until recently the local barn exclusively taught the

saddle seat discipline. In an age where saddle seat is an anomaly in some parts, it is what everyone learned growing up in St. Simons. Christy Parker started riding there at Sea Island Stables at the age of five. The stable hosted an annual show that was very well attended by the community so every rider from the barn participated. “That’s where my horse show bug started,” she said. Around age 12, Julie Kaufman and Holly Hicks took Christy for some lessons with Jimmy Glidewell. She fell in love with the Saddlebred mare, “American Lane” that Jimmy put her up on, so she began riding and showing more competitively with him. Christy discovered her love for Equitation in the many hours of pattern practice out in the hot Florida sun. Jimmy ended each lesson by requiring two laps without stirrups. “I hated and loved it all at the same time,” said Christy. Throughout her juvenile years, Jimmy and Christy’s father had a deal in which they found ‘investment’ horses for her to show until they sold, then Jimmy would be off to find another ‘deal.’ They showed all over the southeast. In Christy’s second to last year of Equitation, the current ‘deal’

happened to be a two year old. While very nice, the colt was not going to become an equitation horse in time. Fortunately, Ruth Gimpel offered her a horse to show to finish out her equitation career. When she went off to college, Dad was no longer “investing” but Christy still was lucky enough to catch ride. After obtaining degrees in Education and Psychology, she went to work at SunTrust then Glynn Middle School in Brunswick, Georgia. She taught riding lessons and worked a few horses out of a leased barn after school and on weekends. After ten years of teaching and hard work, Christy was able to purchase her own farm and began teaching and training full time. “It was my life-long dream to raise and train horses and teach people how to ride,” she said. Pine Haven Stables is the realization of Christy’s dream, so she adheres strongly to her vision of what it should be. Like her, Pine Haven is authentic and focused on attaining goals. There’s a thriving lesson program, in which she aims to appeal to horse lovers of all ages, in addition to a competitive string of show horses for a variety of
divisions. She says she truly loves the horses and pairing up a show team, as well as the details of patterns and teaching someone how to rack. Christy described Pine Haven: We have a fun, encouraging, drama-free atmosphere that I absolutely love. I never lose sight that these are my customers horses and they choose to spend their time and money at PHS. I’m also proud to offer a show horse lease program so the average kid has access to a nice show horses without selling their house! I strive to make riding and showing an affordable life long sport. Along the way, Christy has been fortunate to have many good friends and many of her idols help her along the way - most importantly with training and teaching advice but sometimes just emotional support. “We have a great support system in the southeast and are always willing to help each other out...I think that separates us from other breed industries,” explained Christy. Though she has enjoyed much peer support, the success she has had is her own. “I would have loved an easier path but I

really think the hard work and tough times makes you truly appreciate every minute of what you build,” said Christy of her path to success. She worked hard to get where she is and feels strongly about giving back to the industry as much as she can. She is regularly involved in many aspects of the Saddlebred industry including the Saddle Seat World Cup program, run by the United States Equestrian Federation. She generously gives her time and resources as it relies upon dedicated professionals contributing to perpetuate the program. “It’s such an amazing experience! I’ve loved getting to know the other riders, coaches and teams. It’s a very unique experience, teaming kids with unknown horses in a quick time and competing in a team event but I think it really proves what strong riders we are producing in Saddle Seat,” she said. Her experience building a show horse barn and lesson program from the ground up in the current climate has given Christy plenty of insight on the industry. “I feel we

have the best product and best teachers, we just have to get people in our door and keep them,” said Christy. “I would love to improve our public image and have riding academies in every town!… and see more variety in our classes, by that I mean, if I see a horse trot in, I can tell exactly which division it is.....not have most classes look the same.” Christy Parker and her Pine Haven Stables is an upand-coming show barn in the southeast United States. She took her childhood passion, acquired the tools and education necessary to forge her dream into reality, all while keeping sight of her priorities. She sends riders and horses in to the show ring prepared and ready to compete, but never forgets that fun is a critical part of the equation. With authenticity and a smile, Pine Haven riders (and their horses) will continue to deliver impressive performances. Christy Parker’s Pine Haven Stables is all about balance.

Preceding the renowned Rood and Riddle Grand Prix event featuring some of the world’s best jumpers, the evening started off with the presentation of three talented and popular American Saddlebreds. These three were brought in individually to perform their gaits and then left the arena together. Each horse was enthusiastically welcomed. First to perform was the many time Fine Harness champion True Fortune, the 10 year old black gelding owned by Frank and Iris James of Beavercreek, Ohio and driven by Jimmy Robertson, trainer at his Infinity Stables in Shelbyville, KY. Second into the ring was the action packed and multi time five-year-old Park horse, Magic City, owned by Jacqueline Manzo of Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and ridden by his trainer, Nelson Green from Nicholasville, KY. Rounding out the presentation was “the people’s horse”, the recently retired WGC Marc of Charm, looking like the Champion he was in the show ring. Marc is owned by Gary and Carolyn Koch of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and ridden and trained by Lionel Ferreira at his Monnington Farm in Simpsonville, KY. What a fabulous day for the American Saddlebred to be featured to such a large group of horse lovers. Many thanks to Rood and Riddle Veterinary Clinic in Lexington KY for inviting the American Saddlebred, the only breed of horse that originated in Kentucky, to participate in their world class event. Hat’s Off to Bill Whitley and his ASHA staff, Vice President David Rudder and daughter Alex who were there with hand’s on help, and the volunteers that chipped in to help. RISING FROM THE ASHES “Hope rises like a phoenix from the ashes of shattered dreams.”
I
t was a Monday afternoon in March of 2016. Bob Brison was jogging a horse outside when he heard the cries for help. Shortly before, someone had commented they smelled smoke, but it was a windy day, and the smell was gone as quickly as it had arrived. Then, one of the employees of Brison’s Fairview Farms got Tonya’s attention and together they went running over to the employee apartment above the barn. “When we opened the apartment door, the fire came roaring out, and it was going crazy,” recalled Bob Brison. It was like something from a movie. While they had many fire extinguishers in the barn, they were completely ineffective at taming the flames that licked out of the apartment and quickly took over the barn. Eternity seemed to pass while they waited for the fire department to arrive, and the feeling of helplessness that quickly overcame them is something Brison said he will never forget. “To watch them spray and spray and it didn’t do anything and it kept getting worse and worse. We were getting horses out as fast as we could, but we barely got all of them out of the second aisle, and we had one horse run back in,” said Brison regretfully.“The speed in which the fire was moving was absolutely incredible.”
186 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
- S.A. Sachs
In all, seven horses and three dogs perished in the blaze, while two barns and an indoor arena were destroyed. Investigators determined the fire started in an attic space above the barn, although the cause was never pinpointed, and because of the wind, the fire department dealt with impossible conditions to try to control the blaze. It quickly spread because of the old wood and insulation. Brison reiterated that the fire department did everything in their power, and that their response was amazing, but it was too little too late. It was every horseman’s worse nightmare, and the idea of coming back from such a crushing blow was just too much for the Brison family in the beginning. But, the support of the Saddlebred community, quickly turned Bob and Tonya’s despair into hope. In just hours, a GoFundMe account was created and thousands of dollars were raised. Support came in the form of help from friends, near and far, through a touching phone call, offers to house their horses, donation of tack, and hundreds of cards, Facebook messages, and more. Brison recalled a special box he received from a

youth club in the Carolinas that came at a time he really needed a lift. “The kids had a bake sale and they sent a box to us. In the box were all of the cards the children had made and a check [from their proceeds from the bake sale] was on top. It arrived on a day I was really having a bad day and it really meant a lot,” recalled Brison. “I was teetering on whether I even wanted to do it anymore, but the little things like that were enough to lift me up and say, ‘get through this!’”.
more. They were now traveling about 10 minutes down the road to Mark and Kelly Hulse’s Farm to work some of their horses, and to Anna Marie Knipp’s High Spirits Farm in Ashland to tend to others; and then spent hours every evening working on their own farm as well. The new facility is 100 feet wide by 240 feet long with 35 permanent stalls and additional portable stalls inside the large arena. The state-of-the-art barn was something the Brison’s had never envisioned when they were first starting out years ago.
“We are all competitors, and we compete all year long, but it was like having a huge family come together and help you out. It was really amazing.Things that used to upset or worry me, I realized it was trivial. It changes your perspective on things.”
“When we first went out on our own we didn’t know what the future held. We figured we would be okay if we had six horses in training. We had five at that time,” recalled Brison. “It kept growing and growing and we added a broodmare and colt barn, and I think by the time we had the fire we had 52 stalls total; 41 stalls in the complex that burned. But It wasn’t really efficient, and everything from cleaning stalls, to working horses, took a while. So, when we built back we made one aisle-way with all the stalls.”
So, with a newfound determination, the Brison family did decide to rebuild. And after the old facilities were demolished; new plans were drawn up, and construction began on a brand-new barn and indoor arena, all with better fire-retardant insulation, more metal throughout the structure, and a sprinkler system. Work began immediately, and no stranger to hard work, both Tonya and Bob Brison were involved in every aspect of the process, from demolition to spreading gravel, and
The facility was completed last fall, and Tonya and Bob Brison moved the last of their horses back to their property after the American Royal Horse Show in mid-November of 2016, just eight months after the fire. The Brison’s have been in America’s heartland of central

Missouri for the better part of their lives. Bob was born in the state of Washington and started out like many, with a pony in 4H. He had a neighbor that had ponies, and with three girls in the Brison family, the neighbors knew they might take the ponies when they decided to get rid of them. Bob’s father had grown up on a cattle ranch on Montana, and while he was no stranger to horses, he wasn’t particularly fond of them either. In the beginning, they had no idea what they were doing, but they read books, and watched others, and piece by piece they began learning a little bit more. They drove the ponies at small shows, and saved their money to eventually buy a hackney pony. “When I was about 13-years-old, we went to a show that had some Saddlebreds, and I saw for the first time all the fancy and nice horses, and the barns with their stall curtains and trunks,” said Bob. He noticed one man back at the stall area that would get up and ride a horse, then take it back, hand it off to someone else, and then get on another horse and do the same thing. “I asked this person, ‘who is that guy?’ and he said, ‘that’s the trainer’. I had no idea that was even a thing, and that’s when it hit me that that’s what I wanted to do.” As a teenager, Bob’s family moved to Oregon and he began grooming horses at Singing Hills Stables, and then he went to work for Dr. Alan Raun’s Reedannland, in Iowa. He was just 17-years-old at the time, but told Doc he was 18 so

he would get the job, he recalled laughing. “He found out that I was just 17 and I asked him if I was fired. He said, ‘No, but if I had known, you could have been showing some of these ponies in junior exhibitor classes!’”. After a stint of time there, Brison made his way back to the West Coast as an assistant trainer at Singing Hills where he met Tonya Helm. She was grooming horses for her brother, Virgil, the head trainer at the time. Tonya’s father, Garland Helm, was a saddle horse trainer in Evansville, Indiana at Merlogg Stables, and then he also moved to Oregon with his children, to work as the broodmare manager at Singing Hills before he retired. Tonya and Bob were married in 1984. They stayed in Oregon for a bit after Virgil left Singing Hills, but then they moved to New Bloomfield, Missouri when Bob got a job as an assistant trainer at Callaway Hills Stable, under John T. Jones. Together, they followed John to Kentucky, and then returned to Missouri to work for Virgil Helm until Brison became the head trainer at Callaway Hills, where he stayed for 15 years. Bob noted how he learned so much from everyone that he worked for over the years, and how many top trainers would spend their time at Callaway Hills. He trained alongside Mike Benn and then later, “Martin Teater was there. Also, Red Crabtree, and Tom Moore, would come

in and spend days. Being around all those people and all of the Missouri legends like Bill and Sonny Sutton, Art Simmons, Charlie Judd, Jack Baker and Sug Utz, just to name a few. They would all help you in different ways. You learned all the time.” “There were so many horses at Callaway Hills,” said Brison. “And so many nice ones, there were always so many nice young horses coming along. It was neat to be able to work the horses, and then watch them go on to become great show horses. We didn’t show a lot, we showed some, but mostly we would get them broke and then sell them,” he said. He learned to make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and also learn to recognize what an outstanding colt looked like and acted like in the beginning stages of their training career. “It really helped me later on when you see one out in the field or on the end of a lead shank.” Not long after they moved back to New Bloomfield, Bob and Tonya purchased a tiny piece of land, where they had a small trailer they lived in. But they had dreams of growing, and it was always a goal for them to go out on their own. As time passed, they built some fence lines, and then a bit more land, and then a small barn with just three stalls, a tiny tack room, a bull pen and a mowed path to work horses. Fairview Farms was born. They had one broodmare and a couple colts. When they sold one of the
colts for a nice price, they built onto the barn, added some stalls and gained a few more horses. Tonya was working at the farm, doing everything herself, while Bob was working at Callaway Hills by day, and then helping in the evenings. It wasn’t until around 2005 that Tonya finally hired Bob away from his day job. Over the years, their program has grown, but it has changed as well – from just prospects and young horses – to more amateur riders, as well as a lesson program and junior exhibitors. One of their most successful junior exhibitors has been their own daughter, Morgan, who seems to be following in her parent’s footsteps. She is currently attending William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, and doing a summer internship at the family farm. She’ll graduate in December and it looks like she may join the family business as well. “Right now, she’s acting like she wants to go into the business and it’s neat to watch her,” said Dad. “Between us and her grandfather, and Uncle Virgil, she’s always had horses in her life, and I’ve also told her that I really don’t want her to do it unless she really, really wants it.” Knowing it’s not an easy path to take, he wants Morgan to be sure it’s what she really wants. The transition from just mostly young horses, to more amateur and kid’s horses has changed their training perspective over the years as well. “It used to be that you

were working to get the horse sold and that’s where I’ve changed my training over the years. We never worried about cantering the horse or anything like that, I wanted to get them trotting as big as they could and exciting, now we get started on that a lot sooner, to me it’s a much more amateur-driven industry nowadays as well. I think all of them are headed in the same direction – we are headed to the same goal, we keep that in mind as we are breaking them – and some horses are more geared that way. It’s nice when you get to that point, because you really know that horse inside and out and know what makes them tick.”
Louisville, in 2015 it came at a really special time.
“We have several amateur riders now and we still do a lot of prospects and colts, and the lesson program,” said Brison. “It all kind of works together for us.We wouldn’t want to do just one part of it. It gives us stability and income.”
Tonya and Bob’s oldest daughter, Sarah [Wisdom], learned to ride when she was growing up, but while the passion for horses skipped over her, it landed on her two daughters, who now ride. The oldest, Kennedy, is now showing in the 10-and-under walk-and-trot division. They also live nearby, and ride under the direction of Kent Swalla at Glendale Stables in Columbia, Missouri. She recently won the UPHA Challenge Cup class for nine and ten-year-old walk-andtrot riders at the Lexington Junior League Horse Show.
One of his all-time favorite horses is Callaway’s Born to Win, who he started and gaited as a colt while at Callaway Hills. “He was really a kind horse, and I made a lot of mistakes, I was young and dumb, but he was really forgiving and he was so good and would just go right on. He was really a smart and neat horse to be around.” Another special horse is The Brightest Blue, who the Brison’s bred and raised themselves and when she won at

One of Bob’s personal favorite memories in the ring was when he showed Callaway’s Copyright as a wild two-yearold. “He was off his feet and all over the place, but when he was all together the crowd would go crazy, and that’s something I’ll never forget,” recalled Brison. While the many horses they have shown and trained over the years hold special memories in his heart, Bob and Tonya say that they are most proud of their children and grandchildren.
Brison said watching his grand-daughter Kennedy showing is up there with one of his proudest moments. “To watch her develop as a rider is really special, and she just eats it up and loves it. She is horse crazy,” said Brison.

KAREN MEDICUS, A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE
CARETAKER SPOTLIGHT This past winter when the horses were all let down and out of show mode, and the youngsters were entering their training routines for the first time, I got to thinking about how lucky we have been personally to have had some wonderful caretakers over the years. Our main caretaker, Jeff Repinski, has worked for Zubrod Stables for nearly 40 years. He’s been a part of the team basically since its inception, and while he left for a few years to try his hand at something else, the horses drew him back and he’s been with us ever since. He now works shorter days, and while he leaves the show travel to the younger guys, he’s a great person to have at home “holding down the fort”. The caretakers are the pulse of our industry. Their blood flows through the veins of every aspect of our business, and so much success is owed to them; from making sure the horses are turned out immaculately, to noticing any small sore; they take care of our precious cargo in both sickness and in health. Thinking of how vital they are to the achievements of these magnificent animals in the show ring, the wheels in my head started turning. I’m really excited to debut this new monthly feature, where we will be taking a look at some of these incredible caretakers that have been immersed in the Saddlebred business for many years.

aren Medicus was born in Atlanta, Georgia and moved to Marietta when she was just three-years-old. It wasn’t until she was ten or 11 that she started riding.
“Across the street from my house was a farm with a big hay field and I saw them jogging horses in the field,” recalled Medicus. “I started following them and would sneak over to the field and take their pictures.” Though she wasn’t as sneaky as she thought, because the owner, JayneTemple Stephenson saw her and stopped her one day. Karen thought she was in trouble, and was worried, but instead,“she invited me in and asked me for my parent’s names and my phone number. She called my mother and said, ‘if there was ever a little girl that needed to learn to ride, it was her.’ I started taking one lesson a week.” One lesson a week wasn’t enough for Medicus for long. She wanted to be around the horses all the time. She had soon worked out a deal where she would get all the horses ready for their lessons each day in exchange for one additional weekly lesson. Medicus was begging for a horse not long after, and her parents bought her one of the lesson horses – a “Heinz 57” that did it all. “You could ride her English or western, with or without a bridle. I showed her a little bit in whatever they had at the show.” When Medicus outgrew her, they traded her for their first

Saddlebred, Sonny. “He wasn’t a show horse,” she laughed. And while he got her off a lot, she learned a lot from Sonny. She began working in the barn after school every day, and on Saturday’s and working shows for the Stephenson’s as well. They had a three-gaited horse that they had bought for a customer, that proved to be too much for the woman, and the horse was for sale. They put Karen on the horse a couple times, and then Karen’s parents went to see her ride the horse. “How my parents got him bought, I’ll never know,” she said. But buy him they did, and Sonny was traded for Medicus’ first real show horse, a big bay Saddlebred named Flashback. The pair did well throughout the southeast show circuit. One of Medicus’s proudest moments was when they won the Juvenile 14-17 Three-Gaited class at Southeastern Charity and took reserve in the championship to Ellen Ogletree’s Superstar. She continued to show him, her final year as a juvenile growing his mane out and competing in the pleasure divisions. When she graduated from high school, Flashback was sold, and Karen headed to Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio for their equine program. In the summers, Medicus continued to work with the horses. She thought she was interested in the breeding side of the business, so she went to work for Jerry Hedden who owned Dogwood Stables in Georgia one summer. At the time, his daughter, Jama Hedden was a 10-and-under rider and she was just starting to ride with Lillian Shively at DeLovely Farms in Rockport, Indiana. When it was Medicus’s junior year of college, she needed to complete an internship for school that upcoming summer. “I asked Jerry if he would introduce me to the Shively’s, and he did.” She worked for them for the summer and at the end of the summer they asked her to return after she graduated

college. She did return and continued to work for them for the next 32 years. Over the years, Karen cared for countless incredible horses. She typically had 5-6 horses in her string at one time. “Once you got to know the horses, you could tell Raymond or Todd what you were seeing,” explained Medicus, talking about the respect they had for the caretakers, and how much she had learned throughout the years. One example of this was one of Raymond’s road horses, the Standardbred, Invincible Summer. “Raymond was working him for owner Judy McNeish, and he would work him in a big fat twisted snaffle. I worked him one day and told Raymond that I couldn’t hold him in that bit and that I had put him in a full ring bar bit. So, Raymond tried it, and loved it and that’s what Judy ended up showing him in for all those years.” Medicus also talked about how legs and tails are her two biggest pet peeves when they aren’t taken care of properly. “Now everyone relies on braces because the art of cutting a tail is lost. The people taking care of them after don’t know how to care for them, and then you have to put a brace on them. Back in the day, most trainers did it themselves and knew how to take care of them.” “We didn’t even tie Satan’s Seductress’s tail,” commented Medicus, recalling the mare of Terri Chancellor’s. “She had a perfect tail. It was nine and a half feet long.” When her mother needed care, Medicus made the difficult decision to leave DeLovely and move back home to Georgia.

It wasn’t long before she missed the horses and was itching to get back to the show scene. “I had known Annika Bruggeworth from when her son, Scotty, was riding with DeLovely and I asked her if she needed any help at the upcoming Lexington Junior League Horse Show. She said sure, and I worked for her there and then went with them to Dayton and Louisville. While I was at Louisville I found out that May Chadick needed help and would be at All-American so I met her up there and we talked,” said Medicus.

DeLovely had great customers over the years. It’s not a nine to five job, and you have to be willing to put in the extra hours; but if you genuinely care about your horses, your horses know it, and your customers know it.”
In her free time Medicus also enjoys cooking and spends many evenings cooking with her Vantage Point family as well. SPIRITS ARE HIGH W I T H FAY AND J IM LOWRY
J
im Lowry grew up in Danville, Indiana with a mother that had Morgan horses, and out of his three siblings, Jim was the one who stuck with it. By his early teens he knew that he would work with the horses, and while they mostly did everything themselves at home, he also took formal lessons with Alfred Kaufman at Kaufman Stables and Armstrong Stables while in high school. “I had a wonderful Morgan pleasure horse named Black Ayrs Ambro. We did lots of winning and he was my guinea pig,” laughed Jim. “I would take him home from a show and try things I had seen other people doing. I showed him for three or four years and won just about everywhere except Nationals.”
first head training job with Jack Smith. It was then that he met Fay Bodine in the summer of 1987 at New England Morgan Horse Show in Northampton. Fay’s family was involved with horses as well, and she had grown up showing Morgan’s. She had horses with Jim Hayes in North Carolina and worked her summers with him. When they met, Fay had been working for Mike Tunstall in Virginia at a Morgan Farm. Jim took a job with Bob McLemore at Apple Flat Farm in North Carolina and they were married in the fall of 1988. Together, Jim and Fay moved to Alabama to work for Tony Lee at Shingle Branch Farm, before moving back to Indiana, where they rented Lowry’s family friend, Larry Sparks, farm.
When Jim was just 16-years-old he broke his first horse to harness, a two-year-old Morgan named JSL Macho. “I showed him at Morgan Jubilee and won the two-year-old park harness championship out of twelve, and that was pretty cool,” recalled Jim proudly.
So, in 1990, Lowry Stables was born. They rented the barn in Indiana for over ten years, and had great success, primarily with Morgan’s, though during those early years they did dabble in training of Saddlebreds as well. They had a Morgan in training for John Scheidt and had been to the Kentucky State Fair for the World’s Championship Horse Show in 1992 just to watch. Jim had mentioned to Scheidt that he would love to train a nice Saddlebred, and that he would do it for free, just to get

his hands on a nice one. Scheidt had Revival as a yearling that year, and Revival had already shown great promise as a weanling in the ASHA Futurity the previous year, so Scheidt sent Revival to training with Jim until the following year. While Lowry enjoyed training the Saddlebreds, he only had a few in training until the mid-2000’s. “I think they are similar breeds, but also they’re not,” said Lowry. “A Morgan is a little harder to bit and get the kind of mouth you want on them. I think it’s helped me a lot with the saddle horses. I think a good Saddlebred is pretty consistent in their work, you can take one program and stick with it, but a Morgan needs a lot of change and variety or they get bored. It’s helped me with the more difficult horses, because it’s made me think around problems and think ahead.” While the breeds have their little differences, Jim explained that the saddle seat show horses in both breeds are trying to accomplish the same thing, so in that aspect it’s very similar. “A Saddlebred has been bred to be what it is for so long, it’s probably a little truer in its type and in that way a little more suited to the job just because they have been doing it for so long.” While they were successful in Indiana, and were continuing
to grow their program, specializing in young Morgan horses, they also wanted to own their own farm. So, in 1999, one of their clients sold them the property in Champaign, Illinois, where they built the barn. For the first few years in Illinois, they still focused primarily on Morgan’s, but by 2005 they had started training more Saddlebreds. The following year, in 2006, they made a big splash for their first appearance at the World’s Championship Horse Show. They took four horses that year, and three of them won world’s titles. “I found out after how hard it was to win at that show,” laughed Lowry. “That catapulted us into the saddle horse industry.” The three-year-old five-gaited mare, Catalyst’s Work of Art, won for owner Priscilla Marconi, and they also took home titles in the three-year-old three-gaited class and the two-year-old three-gaited division. “We’ve always done young horses, and I’ve always enjoyed doing that,” said Lowry. “As we got more young horses that were for sale, then over time, we did more and more amateurs and kids, and that’s a large part of what we do now. In the beginning, I would get frustrated trying to teach them to ride the horse like I would ride it, and then as I’ve gotten older and smarter, I’ve realized the job is to train the horse so they can ride it. Find the happy medium, they will never ride the horse the same way I do. When I’m up there doing what I’m doing, I try to think about what I’m

doing so I can communicate it to the rider.” Lowry still enjoys working with the young horses as well, and each year seems to develop several show ring stars. “We’ve just been lucky and fortunate. You never know if you have something special, and it’s rare that we keep a young one for more than a year,” said Lowry. But it’s not just luck, it’s a keen eye that both Jim and Fay have. “I love showing them, but it’s really fun over the winter to develop them,” he added. “Getting a young one in that you know is going to be a good one and watching it come along is special.” After 25 years on their own, and the last ten years running Lowry Stables from Champaign, Illinois; this past January, Fay and Jim Lowry moved to Anna Marie Knipp’s High Spirits Farm in Ashland, Missouri. The move came as a surprise to most in the industry, and as Jim said, even themselves. But all of the pieces started to fall in place, and it seemed like the right decision for them at the time in their lives. And now, eight months into their new venture, they are thrilled with their decision. “We had always been full [with 45 training horses] in Illinois, but where we needed to improve our business was in sales and getting people to come look at our horses,” described Jim talking about their location in an area where Saddlebreds

and Morgans just weren’t that popular. Fay missed the landscape of the Carolinas where she grew up, and they found themselves as empty nesters, as both daughters, Ebby, now 25, and Audrey, 21, had moved out on their own. Then, Jim’s mother passed away last September and they talked about putting the farm on the market, just to see what would happen. They didn’t have a plan, but both Jim and Fay knew they were ready for a change. It was then, that fate seemingly intervened. In May of 2016, at the UPHA Chapter V show, Jim Lowry showed a Morgan horse, named Playmor’s I’m A Star Too, and Anna Marie Knipp was immediately taken with the horse. While she had never owned, or shown a Morgan before, she had always appreciated them. “He reminded me of a great pony I had, Heartland’s Supremacy,” she recalled. “It was an interesting diversion, and appealed to me. The minute I drove him, I just fell in love. He was so much fun. He was like a big pony, and full of energy.” Knipp bought the Morgan from Lowry Stables just before Midwest, and he came home to Missouri from the show with her. The plan all along was that the Lowry’s would take the horse with them to Morgan Grand National’s in Oklahoma for Knipp to show, since High Spirits didn’t have any other Morgan’s to make the trip. “We were going to the St. Louis Horse Show at the end of September, and were going to

pick the horse up,” said Lowry. While they visited, Anna Marie was talking about some people that had been calling her about the job opening she had at her High Spirits Farm. “She said in passing, ‘if you think of anyone that might be interested, let me know.’ And I walked a couple steps and then stopped and turned around and said, ‘you know what. We need to talk.’ Literally, after that, within two weeks we had figured out everything and it was just the right kind of fit.” “It was the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” said Knipp in reference to working out the details on Lowry’s moving their existing farm; horses, customers, and staff, four hours away, from Champaign, Illinois to her High Spirits Farm. Knipp headed to Oklahoma a couple days early to work out the details with Jim and Fay, and while there showed her Playmor’s I’m A Star Too to a win in the qualifier and the Ladies Park Harness World’s Champion at Morgan Grand National. The team ended up 2016 undefeated, winning in all five of their outings together. After Morgan Grand National, Lowry’s headed back to Illinois to finish out the show season, and inform their customers and staff about the upcoming changes. “Right after Grand National everyone knew. They dropped a load of show horses off on the way home from American
Royal, and then the following week Jim came in with more horses. They came in the day my mother died,” said Knipp. “And then over the holidays Audrey broke her pelvis. We were there for each other through all of that.” It was a fresh start for both Jim and Fay Lowry and Anna Marie Knipp for 2017. “It’s a great deal here. We brought about 25 of our own customer horses with us, and Anna Marie had nine or ten as well. It’s been profitable for her and lucrative for us. She’s very hands off. I don’t feel like anything job-wise has changed for us, the business day-to-day, it’s basically like we just moved barns.” “The facility is incredible, and the staff, and I can concentrate on what I do best and I don’t have to worry about all the other farm things,” added Lowry. One thing that Lowry appreciates, is that now he doesn’t have to worry about finishing up a long day training horses, and then spending hours mowing fields, or fixing fence lines. With 550 acres at High Spirits Farm, it’s a massive place. There are 38 stalls in the show barn, another 20 and an arena in the other barn, plus crops. “It’s not my livelihood, but I have a big interest in it,” said Knipp. And she also enjoys the administrative end of it, doing horse

show entries, and all the bookkeeping. “It takes a village to do it all.” “She’s very much about the business of the industry,” added Lowry. “She enjoys that part of it. She’s very helpful and full of great ideas.” Lowry Stables assistant trainer and instructor, Allison Cantrell also made the move to High Spirits Farm. She runs the lesson program. “I want our kids to be known not only as great horseback riders, but great kids, and kids who care about animals and people as a whole,” she said during a video interview this year. While they have long had a lesson program, the location for them now is prime, and will allow them to continue to create new clients from the ground up. “The farm is on a fairly major four lane highway from Columbia to Jefferson City and we got a great big sign on the white fence, with lessons and the phone number and Allison probably gets anywhere from six to ten phone calls about lessons per week.” Jim and Fay Lowry are also enjoying being part of the Saddlebred community in Missouri. “You’ve got all these stables and great horseman. Other than going to Lexington or Simpsonville, I don’t think there is a higher concentration of Saddlebred barns anywhere,” said Lowry. “We’ve sold so many horses this year because we have had traffic.”
208 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
“Everyone around here gets along, everyone in the horse business understands that it’s hard to have friends in the real world. We never really did much before. I think we are going to try and start a bowling league this winter,” he laughed. While the life of a horseman is always busy, the Lowry’s have finally found themselves at a place where they feel they are caught up. Being empty nesters, they are going through that adjustment as parents, and find themselves exploring Missouri’s parks and trails, and enjoying their backyard living in a neighborhood, something else they have never done before. With Knipp’s hand on the bookwork and horse show entries, Fay also has more time now to help with the horses, and she’s also been judging a lot more, most recently judging the UPHA Equitation finals at Arabian/Half Arabian Youth Nationals and then New England Morgan Horse Show. She’s also spending time with her philanthropy, The Heart that Gives Foundation, which helps support the people living in the Zulu village in South Africa. “She’s always been involved in the horse business, but it’s not easy being the wife of a horse trainer,” said Jim. “And she has to be behind me and the clients, and I’m really happy she’s found something that she’s really passionate about and onehundred percent all her.” Fay and Jim Lowry, and the rest of the High Spirits Farm family are looking forward to the rest of the 2017 show season.
