Nancy-Leigh and WCC Heavenly Thunder
My My and WGC CH Callaway’s Forecaster made Lead-line history in 2009 at Midwest Charity
YEAH BOY!
O
Three Generations
nce upon a time a girl loved a horse. A lot of stories begin in this manner as it did for Nancy-Leigh Fisher, her daughter, Alice Unger, and granddaughter My My Unger Singh. The story doesn’t end, it just produces more champions and more love of horses. For Nancy-Leigh Fisher, family is everything and that family is well represented with three generations all competing in Freedom Hall for World’s Championship honors. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, while her father attended Medical School at the University of Louisville. Her mother wanted all her children to be well rounded and required they all learn to ride, swim and play piano. Of the four siblings, Nancy-Leigh was the only one who loved riding. “My great grandmother, my grandmother and my mother all loved horses,” she recalled.
By International Show Horse Staff Writer horsemanship from her charges. “I’ve only really been thrown once from a horse,” Nancy-Leigh said, “and I bailed then.” As a child an unruly mount presented few options so NancyLeigh decided to abandon ship. “Ms Berkley yelled at me because I might have gotten the horse hurt.” Ever since, she has been determined to stay on, no matter what. The lesson learned was: the horse’s well-being comes first even over one’s own life and limb. She got her first horse at age 6 or 7. She wanted a “white one” but was satisfied with a grade buckskin who turned out to be in foal. She eventually broke the foal to ride herself and she was hooked for life.
At the age of 10 she traveled to Kentucky with Ms Berkeley. They stayed for two months and leased a horse for her to show at the county fairs. Her first trip to the Kentucky State Fair as a spectator made her realize what she wanted more than anything was to ride in the Five-Gaited Grand When she was 3, the family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Championship and make the work out. Florida where her father became the chief of surgery at the area hospital. The Fort Lauderdale Riding School had a Berkeley was instrumental in introducing Nancy-Leigh to the minimum age requirement of 6 years old. She had to wait to American Saddlebred. Berkeley and Nancy-Leigh selected start her lessons with Estaire Berkeley who was the owner/ Smart Guy by Anacacho Shamrock as her show mount. She instructor. (Jane Bennett also grew up riding there.) showed the gelding at all the county fairs and, as a 10 -11 year old, was showing in the open five-gaited classes. Her mother Berkeley was a fierce instructor who required the utmost in only allowed her a certain amount of money for showing so

she had to earn the rest in prize money. “Smart Guy could fly,” she said. “Even when we were second, the crowd would go wild.” Her winnings kept her showing all through the Kentucky summers. She and Smart Guy were named Reserve World’s Champion Five-Gaited Junior Exhibitor Geldings in 1967. While she rode with some of the top names in the business, Jim B. Robertson, Ed Teater, Tom Moore and Garland Bradshaw, she found a home in Wisconsin at Hollow Haven Farm with Lynda and Andy Freseth. “Anyone who teaches riding would love to get their hands on NancyLeigh,” Freseth declared. “She is amenable and pliable and she loves her horses.” Fisher also has horses in Kentucky with Joan Lurie at Willowbank Farm. Both banners have displayed the World’s Championship ribbons from her Woodleigh Farm entries. “Nancy-Leigh does it for all the right reasons,” Lurie stated. “She truly loves the horses.” In 2003 her childhood dream was realized with WGC CH Callaway’s Forecaster under the guidance of Hollow Haven Farm. She became one of only 3 amateurs to ever win the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship. “It will never sink in,” she stated. “It’s all still so surreal. I was

just having a blast and living my dream.” It never enters Fisher’s mind to think any of the accolades are deserved by anyone other than the horse. Freseth said of the 2003 victory, “When she won the gelding class that week, I was so excited I almost knocked her off the horse! When she won the stake, it was unbelievable! Our goal was to make the work-out!” Fisher has graced the winner’s circle in recent years with WCC CH My Wonder. Also trained by Hollow Haven, they were 2015 World’s Champion of Champions Five-Gaited Ladies Amateur. More thrilling for her than her own championship rides is seeing Alice and My My in the ring. “When Alice showed Ninety-Eight Degrees and when My My cantered Annie for the first time, well, I never thought I would feel those feelings again. It was all just amazing.” Forecaster played an important role in keeping the generations united. All three members of the family have shown him. In 2006 Alice rode him to Reserve Championship honors in Five-Gaited Amateur at Bonnie Blue. My My took her first rides on him at the age of two and presented him in blue ribbon style in Lead-Line at Midwest Charity in 2009.

Alice remembered, “My My’s first lessons were all on Forecaster. The day Lynda (Freseth) decided to teach My My to cluck was a hard day for him.” Forecaster was always wide open at the hint of a cluck but he knew he had to take care of his precious cargo. “While My My practiced her clucking, his eyes got wider and wider but he never even pulled on his bridle. When they got back to the stall, he was soaking wet. That was the kind of heart he had.” My My’s name is Alice-Mithali Unger Singh. As the fifth Alice in the family, she needed a distinct form of identification. My My was the natural choice and was inspired by the famous mare of the same name. Alice’s husband, Jaspal Singh, accepted his daughter’s new title with a tip of the hat to her Indian (“dot not feather,” noted Nancy-Leigh) name, Mithali. The family has grown strong over the years and showing horses has aided in the growth. “Perseverance is the most important lesson we all learn,” says Alice. “Life is frail and fleeting,” Nancy-Leigh agreed. “Blue Ribbons are not the end goal. The process is what’s rewarding.” All three of these women are shy and reserved by nature. Bullied during childhood, they found strength and refuge in the horses. “Where else can you find this kind of bond?” asked Alice.
58

“You can pour your heart out to your horse and when you are showing, it’s like no one is looking at you, but just at your horse.” “Everything else just disappears,” Nancy-Leigh agreed. Nancy Leigh’s quiet grace in and out of the ring masks her inner drive. “I came from the old style of Equitation training. To ride with subtlety and keep your cues so slight no one sees them,” she said. “I never gave Forecaster a physical cue. I’m sure my hands and legs did things I wasn’t aware of, but I could just THINK something with him, and he would do it.” The horse fever infected the women in the family at different times. Nancy Leigh caught the bug between the ages of 3 and 6. It stayed with her but she took time away to marry and start a family. She returned to it with Alice in tow. She had promised Alice a horse one day. Alice informed her she wanted The Black Stallion. Didn’t we all? While shopping for new carpet when Alice was 7 years old, Nancy-Leigh discovered the carpet dealer was selling his Arabian horses. She purchased a white mare for Alice. No carpet. She started teaching Alice to ride and realized she needed a horse of her own so they could ride together.
They started riding at LaFleur stables. “I loved the horses,” said Alice,“but was never ‘horse crazy’. It was after I graduated from college the ‘crazy’ got me.” Nancy-Leigh sent Alice to Kentucky with Lynda Freseth to find the perfect horse.
was wearing silks and promised her another road pony class was coming. By the time Andy’s class was ready, she was sound asleep. When the announcer called the class, her eyes popped open and she called ‘Andy!’”
They purchased CH Ninety-Eight Degrees. “The minute she sat on him,” said Freseth,“I knew that was the perfect picture.” Alice campaigned him undefeated for two seasons and 4 World’s Championship titles. Last year mother and daughter both rode in Three-Gaited Park Amateur, at Louisville, and lined up next to each other.
Grandmother, Nancy-Leigh had established a hard and fast rule for an ambitious My My. “You cannot show at Louisville until you canter.” This caused much consternation for the young enthusiast who devoted her attention to a solution. One day in the car she said, “Ya Ya (not Grandma), Road Ponies aren’t supposed to canter.” This solved the problem in her mind but she was still very young to be showing anything in Freedom Hall. Ya Ya insisted she learn to ride first and set difficult personal goals for My My to achieve in order to get a pony. Single-minded, she set to the task and succeeded. Regal’s Wild Card LF “Doodle Bug” was the result. “It was one of the kindest horse deals I have ever made,” NancyLeigh remembered. “Mary and Jeff McClean allowed us to take the pony for a month to be sure it would work. I will be forever grateful to them. My My loves that pony and he loves her.” She showed and placed at Louisville in 2015 in Roadster Pony 13 & Under. She was 7.
My My was born with horse fever. She began by showing WCC CH Ninety-Eight Degrees, in utero, to a National Championship at the American Royal in 2006. She was born a few months later and made Lead-Line history with Forecaster at the age of 2. Her love of Roadster Ponies was obvious at her first Louisville. Only 8 weeks old, her attention to the road pony classes astounded her mother and grandmother. Two years later, that attention was still acute. “On Thursday night,” Alice remembered “she was whooping and cheering for the Road Pony class and cried when they left the ring. Andy

My. After two seasons in Walk and Trot, she is now cantering and will show in Freedom Hall in Country Pleasure 13 & Under. “I love when Annie ‘boogers’ and gets really big on victory passes,” stated My My. “Then her mane starts flying all around and hits my face!” When asked about her favorite part of showing “Doodle Bug” she replied, “Really fast is really fun!” Alice chuckled at her response, “It’s a good thing My My was born horse crazy because the summers at horse shows would not be as much fun for her.” Freseth noted, “Horseback riding runs deep in her genes. She has an unusual dedication to it and she has no boundaries for what she can do. I have never taught a child who doesn’t back up from anything. The wilder it gets, the more she loves it.” This year saw an unusual turn of events for the family’s Woodleigh Farm in the purchase of World’s Champion Sire, Undulata’s Nutcracker. “I was in love with him the first day I saw him,” stated Nancy-Leigh. “When the opportunity came along to guarantee his future, the three of us all agreed on the decision.” The stallion will remain at Willowbank Farm under the direction of Joan Lurie. Lurie and Fisher are no strangers 60

to the breeding business. Fisher’s relationship with Willowbank and Joan Lurie spans decades. Willowbank bred and trained WCC Heavenly Thunder for several World’s titles for Fisher including World’s Champion of Champions Three-Gaited Ladies in 2009. The mare has already produced World’s Champion offspring with Nutcracker. “What defines Nancy-Leigh,” Lurie noted, “is the grace with which she lives her life. She sets an example every time she does anything and I am truly honored to call her my friend.” The champion horses ridden by Nancy-Leigh Fisher and Alice Unger are innumerable. This year WCC CH My Wonder will, once again, be the mount for Nancy-Leigh in Five-Gaited Ladies Amateur. She will show A Breath Away in Three-Gaited Park Amateur under the direction of Willowbank Farm. Alice will show WC The Code Cracker in Country Pleasure Driving and My My will return to the green shavings with Doodle Bug and make her cantering debut with Annie. All with Hollow Haven. Nancy-Leigh’s signature “yeah boy” can be heard from the stands in all of Alice’s and My My’s classes. Not to be outdone, when Ya Ya hits the ring, Alice says “My My’s ‘Yeah Boy’ sounds just like her grandmother on helium!”

ASF 2016 AFRICA SADDLE HORSE FUTURITY
W
ith the seventy seven mare nominations received, the twenty six weanlings entered for the ASF 2016 competition and most probably the most important of all, a first prize of R100 000-00, it was evident that this year’s competition would again be wide open and of exceptional high standard.
and Brent Jacobs, both from the USA and familiar faces at Bloemfontein Show, Enid Norton, Hugo Visser and John Murdoch, all from South Africa. To ensure transparency, the judges used score sheets and the foals were judged on an individual basis. The names of the ten foals that would compete in the final were announced during Monday night’s awards function.
With Nicky Heyns from Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape in control, the ASF 2016 competition was once again an epitome of style and detail, including cupcakes, ties and caps with the ASF logo. On the morning of 25 April 2016 nineteen foals turned up for this prestigious competition.
Late afternoon on Monday, 25 April 2016, saddlehorse breeders had the opportunity to buy services of some of the best locally bred and imported stallions in the country during the eighth consecutive stallion auction. From a small start during the Parys Indoor Show in 2009 with twenty five stallions entered, this auction has grown to one with services of fifty one stallions on offer.
The 2016 ASF panel of judges consisted of Melissa Moore

THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
135
French Legionnaire has topped the ASF Sire rating for the second consecutive year. Two new stallions appear on the ASF Sire rating, French Flame and Quantum of Solace. Both stallions had their first foals in the ASF circuit this year. The third column depicts the points awarded to the weanlings, the fourth column the mares that produced the weanling or the performance horse from a sire that was nominated between 2011 and 2015 and in the last column the points awarded to ASF performance class participants. A winning foal awards a stallion 10 points, second place 9 points, etc. It is important to understand that the sire rating for the ASF weanling and performance competitions bears no reference to the National Sire rating in South Africa. ASF PERFORMANCE CLASSES Red John (Whiplash x Space Dancer) owned by Dries Moolman and shown by Kobus Kemp won the ASF Fine Harness 3-year old class. Tamagotchi J & B (Tamagotchi x Pinto Chardonay), owned by Bertus du Plessis was second with Africa’s Miss Capitano (Mr Africa x Catalina, owned by Du Plessis Family Trust in the third place. The Lady is French (French Legionnaire x Senorita Bonita) shown by Nicola Burger and owned by Luci Nouwens won the ASF Three Gaited 3-year old class while Uncle Clarence (Uncle Angus x State Emotion) owned by CJ du Plessis placed second and Lori’s Prince Charming (Tornado’s Perfect Timing x Cinderella), owned by George Borcherds, third. The ASF Five Gaited 4-year old was won by Hold Your Breath (War Image Boy x The Final Flame) owned by Dreto Stud and shown by André Botha with The Big French (French Legionnaire x Belle of San Francisco), owned by Luci Nouwens in the second place. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Last year Gauteng Horse Mag had an article on the “Common mistakes SA Warmblood breeders are making”. The article concluded by stating “Don’t lose the knowledge of the great old breeders – borrow from it all the time, for others have done the hard work, a generation’s work for you. When you breed use the best you can. The best mare you can get your hands on. Know her strong points, know her weak points. Then go and find the best, most suitable stallion that you can lay your hands on. Spend R5 000 more. Reduce the risk. Don’t get sucked in by convenience, hype, people with their own agenda. Seek out knowledgeable third parties with no financial gain linked to a choice of stallion. Make sure you can see it through to the end. Accept responsibility for your actions”. 2016 Saddle Seat World Cup Stellenbosch, South Africa
By Madine Dercksen – Team South Africa “Head up, shoulders back, attitude is everything. Now is your time to shine. Go show them what you’ve got!”The Saddle Seat World Cup took place at Mistico Equestrian Centre from 3 to 8 July, 2016. The competing countries included South Africa, the United States of America, Canada and Namibia. In the threegaited division, America took the crown, with South Africa winning silver and Canada bronze. For the first time since 2008, South Africa won gold! In the five-gaited division, team USA was awarded silver medals and Canada went home with bronze. By Sunday night all the teams had arrived. For the next week, the teams made themselves at home at Stellenbosch Lodge. Right from the start, it was a tightly scheduled week. The drawing of horses, groups and order of go took place at Mistico on Monday morning. The riders had time to meet their horses and to walk 148 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
the patterns chosen for the week’s competition before the first practice sessions for Phase One started. Each country had exactly twenty minutes to practice and to match riders with horses. This routine followed for both the three-gaited and five-gaited divisions. On Monday evening a welcoming party took place at De Bosch Stables. All the riders as well as their families and trainers attended. This was an excellent opportunity for the riders to get to know one another before the competition started. Another set of practice sessions took place on Tuesday. The same routine was followed, except that the horses drawn for day two were being practiced on. Enjoying the typical Winelands ambience, all the teams dined at La Romantica that evening. The trip to the top ofTable Mountain on Wednesday was definitely
one of the highlights. Even some of the South Africans took a ride to the top for the first time. The afternoon was set aside for free time, which the teams could have used for shopping or to rest. Some of the countries visited Boulders Beach to interact with the penguins. Wednesday evening, the South African team had their official blazer presentation and was honoured enough to be joined by Wessel Strauss, the secretary general of SAEF (South African Equestrian Federation). The team and their parents dined at the Big Easy restaurant and were spoiled with the finest cuisine. This relaxing day was needed as a calm before the storm. On Thursday morning the competition kicked off with the threegaited phase one.The afternoon followed with phase one of the five-gaited. All the riders gave their everything from the start. We knew that each and every point we gathered for our team could make a difference in the final result. The last patterns of the fivegaited were only finished after dark.Thereafter, the teams had the opportunity to walk their patterns for the next day. After day one, the scores among the countries were extremely close, which left a hard decision for the coaches of the teams about what combination of riders they should use over the next two days. On Friday, only the three-gaited phase two was ridden. It started in the afternoon, which gave the riders enough time in the morning to prepare mentally as well as physically for the last turn they will had to show their skills. The five-gaited phase two took place Saturday morning. The tension of tough competition built over the week and by Saturday the change in mood could clearly be felt. The crowd of spectators THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

grew and the cheering increased as the riders rode their hearts out. Waiting for the results is one of the hardest things. The award ceremony held at Mistico Saturday evening was marvelous. After the wait and gritting our teeth to hear the final results, the evening was spent socializing and dancing along with the riders from the other countries. The South Africans even managed to teach some of the foreign riders how to “sokkie.” Winning is great, but at the end of the day it is not the only thing that matters. During the competition, a lot of bonds were formed that spread worldwide. Most importantly, we ride because we enjoy riding. We love the adrenaline rush we get from entering the arena, ready to show the judges exactly who we are. We like the challenge of getting a difficult horse to ride or a pattern we have never seen before. We learn something new each time we climb a new horse –about ourselves as well as some new horsemanship skills. We love seeing that the endless “stirrup-less” lessons and sore muscles in every part of our body paid off. Most of the riders that came from far took a few days before or after the competition to do some sightseeing all over South Africa. The Kruger National Park was visited, elephant rides taken, lions and cheetahs petted and some even did shark cage diving. Others also travelled to Zimbabwe and paid a visit to the extraordinary Victoria Falls. The Junior Protea team will also be competing in October against the Junior Namibian team in Upington, South Africa. The next Invitational team will travel to the USA in April 2017. We are all looking forward to this competition as preparation for the 2018 World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA. All things considered, most of the riders, parents and supporters would agree that the 2016 World Cup was a huge success and will surely be one that would be remembered. Undisputedly, experiencing such an event is engraved in your heart forever. 150 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
By Allie Poovey – Team USA The experience of being a member of the US World Cup Saddleseat team was one of greatest memories and friendships. As do most kids growing up, I have always dreamed of having the opportunity to represent my country in competition! Being able to do this and hearing the Star Spangled Banner played as I stand with my teammates will be something I will cherish always. Competing as a equestrian usually means the team of you and your horse competing against other horse and rider teams. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to form great friendships with people from all over the country that I have been competing fiercely against for my entire riding career. Competing as a team with common strategies and goals was an amazing experience. I can’t say enough about the coaches. They took us all in like we had always been their students and gave the direction that we needed to be successful. The international experience leaves me with great memories and friendships! It was so amazing to compete against riders from other countries that have competed, trained and dreamed of that same opportunity to represent their countries. I enjoyed having opportunities in our down times to meet and get to know them and see how much we have in common. South Africa is such a beautiful country and the South Africans were amazing hosts for this event. They were so welcoming and hospitable from the moment we stepped off of the plane to the closing ceremony. I am so great full to have had the South African Experience. Not only was my time spent in South Africa wonderful, it was a once in a lifetime experience. I could not give a greater thank you to the South Africans, USEF, World Cup supporters and donors, and the fantastic coaches. Without all of these wonderful people this event would not have been possible.

By Sara Sheppard – Team Canada My name is Sara Sheppard and I was a Canadian Competitor in the 2016 World Cup. Being a part of this competition has been a goal of mine my entire life. When I was little I would watch the older girls train and compete, it inspired me to push myself and make it on to the World Cup Stage. My trainer back home knew how to push me so I could do my best in the show ring when the time came. This was a once in a lifetime experience and I made many friends for life. Canada was very fortunate to have a very close knit team. Everyone was supportive and pushed each other to be better. I was fortunate to be the captain of the three-gaited team, and a member of the five-gaited team for the 2016 World Cup. The horses that I got really pushed me to go for it, and I felt like a real competitor in the show ring. I got to ride 4 horses all together. They taught me to be a dependable partner. Riding in South Africa was amazing, but it was my horse back home that brought me to this moment. Jocko is the high spirited gelding that has prepared me for World Cup. I started riding him when he was 3 and began our equitation career when he was 4. Jocko is the “push me to my limits horse,” without proper discipline he can really get away on you so being diligent and having consistent practice has helped me to succeed on him and ultimately succeed in South Africa. I have one more year of equitation and then I would like to start my career in the five-gaited division. I would love to compete in the World Cup again and continue to be part of such an amazing team. Ultimately, the goal is to bring Canada to the gold. I want to be part of the board and help make a difference for team Canada and continue to develop our young riders program so that the teams to follow are just as strong as ours. It was exhilarating finally being in South Africa. In that moment it was surreal. Being in that show ring was a dream come true. I have never had so much fun in my life. 152 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
By Adele Cranz – Team Namibia The last time Namibia competed in a World Cup was in 2008. This year’s Team Manager, Mareza Visser, had a vision to start up the sport again and did an amazing job in bringing her dream to life in a very short period. From hosting team trials in February, reinstating the sport code with the Namibian Sports Commission, to having us ready to compete in only a few months was an accomplishment. Each member of Team Namibia can be proud of the part they have played in making history in Saddle Seat riding in Namibia. At World Cup 2016, we had both the youngest and the oldest riders competing at the event, the result of bringing together the best from a small group of available riders in our country. A big thank you goes out to Hartmeyer Saddlery and The International Show Horse Magazine who made it possible for our riders to look world class by assisting with the acquisition of riding accessories. Judging by the compliments the team received, we didn’t only look the part, but must have been doing something right in the arena as well. We loved every moment of World Cup 2016 and the challenge of riding some of the best equitation horses in South Africa was a great honour and a valuable experience. Thank you to the organisers for this fabulous event and the quality of horses made available. The welcoming function at De Bosch was a special highlight and great fun. We just don’t have barn parties like this in Namibia. Getting to know the members of other teams was another highlight for our riders. Team Canada, thank you for being the friendly and open people that you are. Our two teams had a lot of fun together and it added true value to the bigger picture of the World Cup experience. We hope to see you all again at the next international competition.

to Eat Within Minutes of the Fairgrounds When you think of the World’s Championship Horse Show, many things come to mind. Riding down the chute on the infamous green shavings, having to pack your bags for 100 degree days, while bringing your warmest coat to wear inside the freezing Freedom Hall, and enjoying all the food the fair has to offer…pork chop sandwiches, hot corn slathered in butter, and deep fried derby pie. They are all part of what makes the horse show – and the Kentucky State Fair – one to remember. But no one can survive on fair food alone (although I know we’ve all tried), so read on to find a few of the best Louisville restaurants and quick eats, all just mere minutes from the Fairgrounds!
Cottage Inn 570 Eastern Parkway Louisville, KY 40217 502-637-4325 Open 11a.m.-9p.m. daily except Sundays.
Just a short two mile jaunt from the fairgrounds is the Cottage Inn restaurant. If you are looking for some good old-fashioned southern comfort food, then this is the place. Opened in the same location, and basically the same menu, since 1929; it’s likely one of the oldest establishments in Louisville. They are most well-known for their fried chicken, which you can order as a two-piece meal or four-piece, and on Wednesday evenings they offer an all you can eat option for under $12. They come with two sides and bread. Try the mashed potatoes with white gravy, and the green beans. They also offer a litany of other southern options, including country fried steak, chicken livers, meatloaf, and their take on the traditional Kentucky Hot Brown sandwich. There is something for everyone on this menu, but leave your diet at home when you visit!

Wagner’s Pharmacy 3113 S 4th Street Louisville, KY 40214 502-375-3800 www.wagnerspharmacy.com 8a.m.-11a.m. breakfast and lunch 11a.m.-2p.m. daily
If you want to check out the reason Louisville is famous – besides our bourbon of course – it’s the home to the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs. Just three miles from Freedom Hall is the iconic Wagner’s Pharmacy; a restaurant, turf goods shop and gift store across the street from the racetrack. First opened in 1922, Wagner’s is the place where all of the trainer’s and local folks hang out during the Thoroughbred race meets. It’s a classic diner that grew from an old soda fountain shop. With a variety of soups and sandwiches for lunch, and all the traditional breakfast items, it’s a fun place to stop in for a quick bite in-between show sessions. Try one of their favorites for lunch; the Derby sandwich, with hot honey glazed ham, melted Swiss cheese and mayo. And order an old-fashioned milkshake to go with it.
Frank’s Meat and Produce 3342 Preston Hwy Louisville, KY 40213 (502) 363-3989 Open 9a.m.-6p.m. daily
Hammerheads restaurant
Hammerheads 921 Swan Street Louisville, KY 40204 502-365-1112 www.louisvillehammerheads.com Dinner daily except Sunday
On the corner of Swan Street in Germantown, you’ll find the tell-tale Hammerhead shark on the side of a small house converted into a restaurant. Situated in an unassuming walk-down basement, Hammerheads is a contemporary Southern gastropub and smokehouse, offering up house smoked meats, including ribs (lamb and baby back), pulled pork sandwiches, and a choice between venison, elk, or chorizo burgers; in addition the traditional angus beef. They also have options for vegetarians and some southern staples like their signature chicken and waffle dish (which often sells out, giving you even more reason to arrive early). Hammerheads also has an excellent selection of craft beers. They don’t take reservations or call ahead seating, so arrive early to get a table, it’s worth the wait.
Certainly the most convenient destination on this list, make it a must to stop by Frank’s Meat and Produce for lunch at least once during the fair. If you leave the Fairgrounds out of Gate 6 (Preston Highway) and turn right, Frank’s will be just down the street on the right, past the Sleep Inn. Frank’s is an old-time deli inside a butcher shop, so there’s no inside seating, but you can get it to go and eat at the hotel or back at the show! There is always a line out the door at lunchtime, but don’t be deterred, it moves quickly and they have perfected their efficiency over the years; unlike the sub-par fast food establishments surrounding it. The prices can’t be beat; you can expect to pay well under $10 bucks for a sandwich with a large portion of multiple sides. Their BBQ sandwich and burgers receive rave reviews, as does their German potato salad, but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Frank’s also offers take-home dinner options, perfect if you have a kitchenette in your hotel.
Eiderdown 983 Goss Avenue Louisville, KY 40217 502-290-2390 http://eiderdown-gtown.com/ Dinner service starting at 4p.m. daily, open at 10a.m. on Saturday and Sundays for brunch/lunch
The country ham at Eiderdown
Four miles north of the Fairgrounds, you’ll find Eiderdown Restaurant in the heart of Germantown. Experiencing a revival in recent years, Germantown has many diverse options for eating. While Eiderdown may sound German, the food is not, it is definitely European-inspired comfort food, with a modern take on classic flavors with a French preparation and over 20 draft beers. Start off with a draft from local brewery, Against the Grain, and an order of the duck fat popcorn or the pretzel sticks served with their own house-made mustards, or get it with a side of the beer cheese. They have entrees to suit anyone’s taste, try the Spätzle, made with basil noodles, ratatouille, goat cheese, almonds, lemon oil, and a 25 year balsamic and add their house made sausage if you are a carnivore. They also have a Broadbent country ham sandwich on locally-made bread if you want something truly Kentucky. THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

The K8 from Vietnam Kitchen
Vietnam Kitchen 5339 Mitscher Avenue Louisville, KY 40214 502-363-7535 www.vietnamkitchen.net Open for lunch and dinner daily except Wednesdays
If you are a fan of Vietnamese food, or any Asian food for that matter, then you have to try Vietnam Kitchen. Located less than 4 miles from the Fairgrounds, across from Iroquois Park, it’s one of the best under-theradar restaurants that Louisville has to offer. With a cult following, you’ll find many repeat diners in this tiny establishment. Don’t be deterred by the strip mall location, or lack of ambience, the food more than makes up for it. All of their food is made to order and comes out as it is prepared, so be aware, you may not all receive your order at the same time. Not sure what to order? Start off with a bowl of their Hot and Sour Soup and then try a traditional Chicken Pad Thai or their famous K8, the Hủ tiếu Saté , which is a spicy rice noodle dish with sate sauce, bean sprouts, broccoli, peanuts and lemon grass, and you choice of beef, chicken, or pork. They also have interesting drink choices like fresh coconut milk, an avocado milkshake, and limeade that will cool down the heat of the dishes and is perfect for a hot summer day! Portions are large, so be prepared to take some back to your hotel for a late-night snack.

Jeanna kept begging her parents for those lessons, and her mom, Anne, finally got her in a program once she was nineyears-old. Her family had recently moved to Lexington, Kentucky for her father’s job, and so she began riding at George Knight’s barn. She was hooked from the first ride. Jeanna and So Now Ya Know’s
“I always swam competitively, which I was naturally good at. Horseback riding I’ve had to work really hard at, lots of lunge lessons,” she laughed. “It’s not something that comes easy to me just being able to get on and adjust quickly to a new horse. But my competitive nature grew with swimming, swim team and competing,” she said. “My mom always said, Jeanna you are so good at swimming, but your heart is with the horses’.” Jeanna attendedTowson University, outside Baltimore, for a degree in nursing and after college had the incredible opportunity to work at Johns Hopkins Hospital for three years.“My itch returned and I had to start riding again. Southwest was having flights to Louisville that were $30 each way. I was living at home, saving money to buy a house, and decided to buy a horse instead,” laughed Jeanna.“My parents were like, wait a minute, one letter in this word is wrong!” While most young adult’s first major purchase is a home, Jeanna’s was the horse she’d always dreamed of having. In 2007, she found the four-year-old gaited horse from Lori Floyd in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and brought the horse back to Maryland. Still a novice rider herself, the horse proved to be a little too much for Jeanna
to work herself, and through a chain of events, the horse ended up back in Kentucky to be sold.“I was flying back and forth visiting my horse and taking lessons, and decided I wanted to move here.” It was hard for her to call any one city home growing up; having attended three different high schools in three years, but she always fondly remembered Louisville, Kentucky. “Saddlebreds are what brought me back to Louisville. It’s where I landed roots. And now, with John’s businesses, we’ll never leave,” added Jeanna. In 2008, Jeanna moved to Louisville as a travel nurse, and after extending her contract for a while, she found a job at Baptist Hospital East in their Coronary Care Unit, where she worked night shift and picked up extra hours, in order to be able to fund her horse habit. No stranger to long hours herself, she often found herself at the hospital for 14 hours at a time. Jeanna was riding with Wendy Winstead at Aloha Stables in Bagdad and had been taking lessons from one of her friend’s instructors, Desiree Clauson, since Wendy didn’t have a lesson program.“I was really learning a lot from Desiree and found myself improving.” Her horse was for sale, so she sent it to their Cardinal

Farms to sell.“Adam and Desiree have a real niche in finding what division a horse is suited for. They put my horse, Tempestuous, in the western division and she was just a natural,” said Jeanna. Together the team enjoyed much success, and in 2013 won at Rock Creek, which was a dream for Jeanna, having ridden there growing up, and Lawrenceburg. The gorgeous dark bay mare was the first horse that took Jeanna to the green shavings as well, something she will always remember. It was a challenge to learn the new discipline, but one that was even more successful when she saw how her horse went from struggling and even unhappy, to flourishing in the division that she was best-suited for.“Western is hard. It’s all mental. You have to think about every single step. I did that for two years and had a ball.” It was with Adam and Desiree that Jeanna began fine tuning her skills as a rider, and developing the confidence she needed to be successful in the show ring. “Growing up I always thought my goal would be to have a ladies walk-trot horse,” said Jeanna. “But thanks to them, I’ve realized that it’s a process and it’s really about the stepping stones. As I look back, each horse that I’ve had has taught me so much, sometimes I really want to jump the gun and the process has made me the rider I am, and given me an appreciation for the hard work and the personal goals and growth.”
Jeanna and her mom, Anne Calabrese, at a horse show.
Her biggest challenge has been to overcome nerves at horse shows. “Over the years I have gotten a better understanding of how you’re sitting on a horse and how they can pick up on your nerves. I never really quite understood that before. And how important it is to be confident and relaxed. I have had to get over my own insecurities as a rider.” Between the horses and her long work days, Jeanna didn’t have much time for relationships. But, she grudgingly agreed when a mutual friend set her up on a blind date with John Varanese in March, 2010. The date had been more than two years in the Jeanna and her trainers, Adam and making. Favorite horse show and why: It has to be Rock Creek. I have the greatest memories from there when I was a kid, learning to ride and showing in academy with Ava Whitmore. I remember Ava encouraging me to introduce myself to Helen Crabtree at the June show in 1997 who autographed her book for me. Favorite destination: St. Lucia where John and I went on our honeymoon. The island and the people are amazing, we stayed at Jade Mountain resort which is paradise and totally surreal. What’s one thing no one knows about you? about the piece of river front property, at the time home to a boat sales and storage facility. About four years ago, the dream started coming to fruition. John had noticed the lack of Louisville restaurants that were taking advantage of the access to incredibly fresh seafood due to the UPS hub in Louisville; meaning direct flights from seaside locations across the world. Having developed his culinary expertise in the south, and on the water, he knew he wanted to bring fresh seafood and riverfront dining, reminiscent of his days in Charleston, to Louisville.
Jeanna continues to support her husband in many ways. She wanted to find ways to be involved, while not knowing much about the restaurant business. So she found herself useful running errands, making phone calls, placing orders and putting her type-A personality to the test, with helping add to the never-ending punch list that needs to be finished with the new construction. “I left critical care nursing about two years ago, and moved to pre-op surgery, the hours were better and a less stressful nursing position was much needed. I start my shift at 5:30 in the morning and I’m home in the afternoon to come help John how I can, In August 2015, John officially announced his second (and third) while keeping my nursing career going as well. I have noticed John trialing new management techniques and adjusting to a larger staff.” said Jeanna. “It’s important to earn the respect, and obtain loyalty from your staff. The front and back of the house staff are seeing the opportunities here, and in the kitchen [John] is willing to teach each and every cook.” The chefs and managers at Varanese have been there for the better part of 8 years, and John trained them all. He took some of his staff with him to River House, and he works hard to teach them and create opportunities for them to advance. “It’s all about building teams,” reiterated John. “On a typical day, I get here at 8am and I’ll hopefully head home around 11pm,” said John. “John and I have the same understanding of long hours. Lately, he’s been working 16-hour days, if not longer, sometimes 18. Part of the way our relationship works is just that understanding and commitment that you can’t just walk away from something like that. Especially when our whole world, our whole life really, is invested in this place and its success. It has to be successful,” said Jeanna. John’s mind is constantly thinking of what can be done in the future as well. The restaurant has over 11,000 square feet of unfinished space upstairs for a future banquet facility. And the picturesque setting right on the river has room for outdoor tents to host weddings and other large-scale events. “There aren’t many facilities of this size available in Louisville,” said 164 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
John, with hopes to capitalize on that. With all that goes with helping her husband open a new restaurant, and the hours working as a nurse as well, Jeanna still manages to find time to ride weekly and show. She currently owns and shows, So Now Ya Know in the competitive country pleasure division. She purchased him last year as an un-shown, un-proven 8-year-old gelding from 3-T Farm. Adam had been to look at some horses and after seeing “Snyk”, he called Jeanna. “It’s been so fun to be involved with the process of Snyk learning, and the training that Adam has done. I think a lot of amateurs don’t necessarily get that opportunity. It’s also fantastic to buy a finished horse and go in the ring and just have that whole package,” said Jeanna, but she’s enjoying this new challenge. “I get frustrated at times when we make mistakes, but these horses are athletes and growing and changing, and I’ve become a better rider through it all. Sometimes they may be small, but we always set personal goals with each class we enter! I’m totally enjoying the ride!” Last year, Adam showed Snyk in his first few outings before Jeanna debuted him at the Ohio State Fair Horse Show, where she took home top honors in the three-gaited country pleasure novice rider championship. She also took home the blue at ETSA Mid-Summer Classic horse show a few weeks later. This year they have challenged themselves further by showing at the many outdoor county fair shows that Kentucky has to offer. The ones where they routinely have 20 or more entries. She recently took home a ribbon in the championship at Lexington Junior League and is looking forward to constantly improving with her new teammate.

AMATEUR PROFILE:
ANDREA ATHANASULEAS B
orn and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Andrea Athanasuleas has been enamored with horses for more than a quarter of a century. She started begging for riding lessons when she was just eight-years-old. While on a family vacation to the Dominican Republic, she watched a movie about horses with her three brothers and when they returned back to the states, her mom, Christina, found Heathermoor Farm in the phonebook. “I had my first riding lesson the next day and never turned back,” said Andrea. “It was quite literally the only thing I was good at as a child,” she joked. After lessons under the direction of Madge and Dewey Bass at Heathermoor Farm in Birmingham, she was soon ready for the show ring. On Christmas morning in 1991 she received the surprise gift of her first horse, CH Rosetta’s King, who she showed in walk-and-trot equitation. Soon after, her parents surprised her again, this time with a horse named Scrap Iron, after her parents went to great lengths to convince her someone else bought him and he was leaving the barn. She showed him in 10 and Under equitation and in 13-andunder show pleasure until 1994. She credits him with teaching her how to hustle. She also owned and showed Memories Love

and Joy in the 13-and-under three-gaited division in 1994 and then when Andrea was about 12, it was time for a new horse. Her dad, Connie, gave Madge and Dewey a budget for the next horse, and they chose a mare that cost exactly double. Andrea recalled the story. “My first class with Champagne Whisper was at Southeastern Charity Horse Show and it was a total disaster, leaping through the air and all. After the class, Madge found my dad very calmly back at the stalls smoking a cigar with his feet up. She cautiously walked up to him (perhaps fearful of his reaction after watching his little girl try to man-handle this crazy mare that oh yea, by the way, cost exactly double what he wanted to spend). He chuckled and said, ‘Well, it will be a long time until you come bugging me to buy another horse, because it looks like it’s going to take her a hell of a long time to learn how to ride this one!’.” Of course she learned to ride the mare. Under the Bass team’s tutelage, she learned to ride the hair off any horse she stepped on. Andrea continued to ride with Madge and Dewey Bass throughout her juvenile years.“Madge and Dewey are like another set of parents to me,” said Andrea. “They taught me life lessons – life lessons that are ultimately much bigger than any horse or any business.”

The next horse that Andrea teamed up with was a partner that she would never forget.“I remember the very first moment that I saw Trapp Mountain at Camelot Stables and I thought he was the most incredible horse I had ever seen in my life,” said Andrea. Madge was showing the five-year-old gelding in the ladies threegaited division, for owner Karon Brooks. Andrea’s parents bought “Trapp” in 1997 and Andrea began showing him in the junior exhibitor three-gaited classes. “He was just a grand horse to be around. He was kind, full of heart, fun and talented.” The pair garnered great success in their long partnership. One of her all-time favorite memories was winning the 23-entry 13-and-under three-gaited World’s Champion of Champions title at Louisville their first season together. “I’ll never forget what that one trip around that ring felt like with those flowers on that saddle. That was beyond a dream come true. Madge, Dewey and Trapp deserved that – I was just lucky enough to be part of it.” In 2001, Andrea’s final season as a junior exhibitor, CH Trapp Mountain and Andrea again took home a World’s Championship title together, as well as the Reserve World’s Champion of Champions honors, this time in the 14-17 threegaited division. Andrea continued to show Trapp successfully in the Amateur three-gaited classes until 2003. It was soon after that the next horse came into the Athanasuleas’ 182 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
life. Andrea’s mom, Christina bought a three-year-old mare named Paris Match (SA War Image x CH Caravelle (BHF)) in foal to Joan Hamilton’s stud, Blue O’Shea. “I was actually at the barn when Blue was born,” said Andrea. “She was our big surprise. As a young horse, we weren’t quite sure what we were working with. Once she came around, there was no turning back. She was 110% show horse every single time I sat on her back. She is an extraordinary mare,” said Andrea. She was also the first horse that she showed under the direction of her long-time friends,Whitney and Matt Shiflet.“I sometimes pinch myself wondering how I got so lucky to be teamed with Matt and Whitney. Not only do I believe they’re absolute masters of their craft, but they’ve become some of my dearest friends and to share this experience with them makes it that much more special to me.” Matt showed Juliette’s Deja Blue as a junior horse and Andrea began showing her in 2007. The following year they won the 15.2-and-over ladies amateur World’s Championship at the Kentucky State Fair. “It was a moment that still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. I am pretty sure that was the first Louisville blue for Matt Shiflet Stables. I felt like in some weird way I was able to give a little back to Matt when he did so much for that mare.” They took home the same title again in 2011, and were twice the Reserve World’s Champion of Champions in the amateur three-

gaited division. “My grandmother came to Louisville on her 90th birthday to see me show Juliette’s Deja Blue,” recalled Andrea. “In my mom’s true fashion of being able to do literally anything, she was able to convince Bill Whitley to have Peter Fenton announce to the entire Friday night crowd at Louisville that she was there to watch me ride and celebrate her 90th birthday. She stood up, waved to the crowd, and smiled her gorgeous smile to me when I was in the ring on Blue. It was incredible.” In 2013, their final season in the show ring together, Andrea showed her in the Park division and they were crowned the amateur park mare World’s Champions. Juliette’s Deja Blue is back at the farm living the mommy life now. They have a threeyear-old and a yearling out of her, both by Tango’s Parting Kiss, and she is in foal again this year as well. Andrea is looking forward to Takes Blue to Tango’s debut, hopefully later this year. Perhaps the most talented horse the Athanasuleas’ have owned is CH Honey Badger. Purchased as a three-year-old from Darell Cruse, Matt saw him while on the road looking at horses, and knew he was special immediately. Showing under the name Late Night Snack, Cruse had recently won with him in the threeyear-old five-gaited class at Alabama Charity in 2011. “We had big hopes for him and thought he needed a name that people would remember. My mom called me and said ‘what do you think about Honey Badger?’ Roughly a day later, Matt called me and said exactly the same thing. It was meant to be, I guess,”
laughed Andrea. Matt showed the newly-named horse lightly in 2012 as a junior horse, ending the year undefeated, with wins at Asheville, Lexington Junior League and North Carolina State, in addition to the title of World’s Champion in the junior five-gaited stallion and gelding division and the World’s Champion of Champions in the junior five-gaited division. The following year he won the five-gaited stallion and gelding stake at Louisville and was third in the World’s Grand Championship at just five-years-old. “I can’t imagine a more athletic horse on the planet. He has athleticism, coupled with an enormous personality – I’m just wild about him,” said Andrea. Andrea took the reins in 2014 where the team was also undefeated in their first six times through the gate. At the Kentucky State Fair they were the five-gaited amateur ladies Reserve World’s Champions and Reserve World’s Champion of Champions. The following year they took home the title in the same division. After Louisville last year, Matt took back over the riding duties in preparation for a chance at this year’s fivegaited World’s Grand Championship. Andrea also competes with her newest mount, Thomas McCleod in the amateur park division. They were most recently the three-gaited park amateur grand champions at Lexington Junior League horse show. QUICK FACTS: What’s the best place you have ever travelled to? Capri, Italy is one of my favorites.
Madge and Dewey Bass congratulating Andrea on her win with CH Trapp Mountain at Louisville.
Favorite destination: My family’s avocado ranch just north of Santa Barbara What is one place you would love to go? Thailand What are your hobbies? Horses. I am quite the foodie – moving to Nashville has been awesome because there are so many good restaurants to try. I love to ski in the winter and I love to be on the water in the summer. I’ve also gotten pretty involved in my CrossFit gym – not sure if that should be considered a “hobby” or not but I do it regularly and enjoy it quite a bit. What do you do in your free time for fun? I’m big on spending time with friends/family – I’ll travel far and wide to spend a long weekend with Andrea’s grandmother on her 90th great friends &/or family. Regardless of the activity, birthday cheering her on at Louisville. I’m happy as long as I’m with my inner-circle. What’s a “typical day” for you from start to finish? Up earlier than I’d prefer 99.999% of the time, gym either first thing to start the day or in the afternoon to make myself stop working. I’m either in the field with reps visiting customers or I’m on conference calls back-to-back all day. Sounds glamorous, I know. Favorite Food: Pasta Favorite band/music/singer: That’s tough – anything old: Michael Jackson, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac Favorite Movie: Forrest Gump or basically anything with Tom Hanks One thing you couldn’t live without: Earplugs (I need my sleep) One thing you wish didn’t exist: Hunger Favorite Horse Show and why: Louisville is magical, of course. But I love Asheville – the quality of horses is extraordinary
Andrea says her biggest challenge in riding comes not from the horses themselves, but the mental game. “I am very competitive, but ultimately I put the most pressure on myself to deliver because I know Matt and his team have worked so hard in preparation. It’s a real mental challenge for me to not let that get in the way of doing my job out there.” Of course, she still works hard to improve, practicing as often as possible, and traveling to North Carolina at least once a month to get in the saddle.“Matt usually has a pretty clear objective of what we’re trying to get out of each ride, so I just try to align with that, knowing that he is working his plan,” she said. After graduating Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005 with a degree in Economics, Andrea moved to Nashville in 2015 to continue working for Medtronic, a global medical device company. “I manage a team of seven clinical representatives that spend the majority of time in the operating room supporting the clinical needs of surgeons and staff. After college, a friend of the family worked in the industry and encouraged me to interview for an entry level position at a medical device company. I still work for that same company seven years later.” Andrea hopes to continue to be able to compete at the top of her game for many more years to come. “A blanket of flowers at Louisville is always the ultimate daydream, but 184 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
I think to represent Matt Shiflet Stables well as an amateur, demonstrating versatility on all different types of horses…that’s a general and hopefully achievable goal,” said Andrea. “Also, since we have raised Blue, it would be a dream to one day show one of her babies that we bred.” Saddlebreds have consumed Andrea’s life for nearly her whole existence, and of course they have had quite the impact on the person she is today. “The horses have contributed greatly to my life. First, I think it’s so important to have a real passion. It’s important to have something that you can do to ‘escape’ the real world, something that even for a short period of time, can consume your mind to give you a mental break…to provide you with something that you truly love. That’s incredibly important and the horses have given me that very precious gift. Second, the people that have been brought into my life through the horses are incredible. My closest friends in the world are a result of the horse business and that’s extremely important to me. We share a common passion of the horses, but the relationships mean just as much to us. That’s pretty amazing and not to be taken for granted. That’s the stuff that lasts a lifetime. Finally and perhaps most importantly, my parents have been incredible. They recognized when I was very young how much this meant to me and they allowed me to have this passion. If I ever have children, I’ll know the importance of letting my children do their passion – thanks to my parents. It has been the greatest gift they could ever have given me.”

Moonlighting with Ali Saddlebred enthusiast and exhibitor of multiple World’s Champions, Ali DeGray needs little introduction to the show horse world. Aside from her regular profession and practicing with her expansive show string, her other job is a labor of love - Luna Avalon, a unique jewelry design company. Specializing in one-of-a-kind statement pieces, Luna Avalon is never ordinary, always distinctive. With authenticity to her own unique style and personality, Ali produces colorful wearable art infused with meaning through the gemstones and materials chosen to express herself and give back to the animals she loves. Here’s a short interview with the self-avowed ‘moon child’ herself: 1. How did this whole jewelry business evolve? How did you decide on the name Luna Avalon? I have been making jewelry since I was in middle school. I would nab the lost buttons from the sewing kit, seashells from the beach, and beg my dad to take me to Michael’s craft store. I made crazy wire wrapped chandelier earrings and wild belly button rings, my mom still wears some of the necklaces I made her with fishing line! A few years ago, I was researching the energy of stones, and started experimenting with ‘good luck’ or ‘relaxing’ necklaces for friends. I loved the added energy and sentimentality of the gifts, and started expanding the concept. The name Luna Avalon is a blend of some of my favorite things. The moon, used in folk lore to charge stones and crystals, and because I’m a cancer- I am a total moonchild. All of my creativity strikes in the evening. Avalon is from the Arthurian legend, a place meaning paradise, and also my favorite place in the world- the little, perfect town on Santa Catalina Island where I spent my summers growing up. 2. What inspires you when designing jewelry? How do you gather the findings for your pieces? I have always been a funky dresser with a love for statement
228 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE
pieces. As a little girl, I would go through my mom’s jewelry boxes and ask her about every single piece. “Who did this belong to?” “What stones are these?” “What do these stones and symbols mean?” “Why do you wear this piece more than this piece?” I always loved the stories behind everything, from her seashell necklaces from Hawai’I in the 1970’s to her beautiful, inherited diamond brooches from her great-grandmother. I was enchanted by the stories behind stacks of emerald and ruby bangle bracelets, tales originated from centuries old maharajas and their courtesans. Personally, I wanted to create pieces with backstories as rich as the stones they are built with. I love the aesthetic of Iris Apfel-esque costume jewelry, and I lament that designers no longer create funky works with real components. I want to make pieces that are unusual, a blend of cultural influences, but with sterling silver, solid gold, and genuine, ethically harvested, organic stones. I spend several hours researching all of the variables in my jewelry. If I use Tibetan silverwork and lore, I want the customer to know exactly what the symbols mean and how sacred they are. I pull from a lot of Native American, Middle Eastern, Indian and
South Pacific culture. I also spend a lot time making sure I’m not creating things that are already out there. When someone buys a piece of Luna Avalon jewelry, they should be comfortable that the components were purchased from other small businesses, the cultures represented are respected, the stones & animal components are researched and genuine (or ethically harvested) and that there’s not another piece like it out there. I spend 90% of my time doing research, and 10% doing literally everything 3.What portion of the proceeds do you donate? What charity is it and why is it so important to you? I donate 10% of my proceeds to a number of animal rescues. If there’s a pressing issue, or a special event, I will donate 20% of what I sell. It’s not the most brilliant way to make money, but that’s not my priority. I donate to American Saddlebred Rescue, Florida Poodle Rescue, E.A.R.S. and others. I’m always looking for more rescues that need help! It’s very important to me. My heart cause is animals, and creating a business where I get to creatively express myself, make people feel beautiful, learn every day, and raise money for animals is really soul fulfilling. In the past 2+ years, Luna Avalon has allowed me to donate over $3,000 to charity. It’s small, but it’s
consistent, and it’s really a wonderful feeling for the customer, the rescue, and myself.else. I don’t make a ton of jewelry! 4. Where can people buy your stuff? Luna is primarily available on Etsy, an online global marketplace of handmade and vintage items, similar to Ebay (but friendlier). I also occasionally set up booths at markets and horse shows, and trunk shows at local boutiques. It’s hard for me to have a booth at horse shows because I show so much, but it’s important to me because horse people are the best audiencethey’re well dressed, and they care about animals. I always try to offer a line of horse-inspired pieces just for our industry. 5. What are your goals for the future of Luna Avalon? My goals are simple- as long as Luna is staying afloat, it works. I intentionally keep my company small, because I love doing everything personally. My main profession is with a digital magazine called Crixeo (www.crixeo.com) and that has to stay my priority. I’m really grateful to work at things I really love, and both Crixeo and Luna make me incredibly happy. My only goals are to keep making jewelry, keep making people happy, and continue raising money for the animals. To me, those are the best goals there are.

The family soon found Bob Whitney Stables, located on land that is now the Ball State University football stadium. Bob and the memorable Jean Berkimer taught newbies Jane and Betty to ride, and soon they were showing at some of the largest shows in the country, such as Lexington and Louisville, the Chicago International and Madison Square Garden where Betty won the 1953 Amateur Three-Gaited stake on Stonewall’s Squirrel. Ellis Waggoner, Zelpha Corkern and Jim Taylor would train great American Saddlebreds and Morgans in that facility until Mr. Hartmeyer’s death during the 1978 Indy 500 Horse Show while watching his grand-daughter Missy ride. By 1978, you can see, Jane and her husband Fred Ginther had children who had joined the family tradition. Oldest daughter Daydn would become a pivotal element as the story unfolds. A few of the horses and riders who hailed from Hartmeyer Stables during those years included Kalabey and Betty, The Starlighter and RWC My Sheer Sensation driven by John (by then given up his Notre Dame and Packers season tickets to join the horse-loving females in the family), Liz and WC Jasper Wildcat - among the first get of Supreme Sultan - Jane and the Morgan World Champion Whitmor’s Serenade; Andy and RWC Pat Perkins; the gaited gelding Commander Stonewall and the WC walk-trot mare Fortune, both of whom were shown by all of the Hartmeyer riders. By the time Jane’s daughters Daydn and Missy had begun to ride, poor John had no fewer than seven family members showing! Many of Jane’s former students are still active in the industry, including Joan Schwartz Todd, Dee Vondielingen Thomas, Suzanne (Crabtree) and Darlene Rhea (Porter), Nancy Fitting Dowty, Kim Kelly, Julie Hannah Tooth, and many more. And some of the horses hailing from Hartmeyer Stables in the 70s included WC Starheart’s Mac (Jane Diekema), WC City Kitty, Super Sultan (Kim Karels Resnick), Chester Drawers (Karen Frickey), WC Oh So Pretty (Kim Kelly), RWC Beverly Brown (the Fiederlein Family), WC Martha Stevens and 10 & Under WC Kathy Gallagher; and Martha Lampe Keck won at Louisville under the direction of Ellis Waggoner.
But, you ask, what can Hartmeyer’s do for you today? That brings us to Jane’s daughter, Daydn who, in 2012, purchased Hartmeyer’s. As mentioned earlier, the shop has grown, evolved and focused over the past 50 years. Probably its best know products are the overwhelmingly popular “Lucky Jods” and the affordable long riding gloves that stay tucked in. Unchanged is the steadfast dedication to the young rider. Hartmeyer’s has always been the “go to” resource for instructors of academy students who may not know what they actually need; Hartmeyers will not oversell. In addition to the apparel staples, Daydn makes shopping fun for even the non-horsey set, offering great finds such as purses, belts, boots, jewelry, hats. But those who have long shopped with Jane know that Daydn has just expanded upon her mom’s passion for horsey antiques. Do not miss their expansive array of goodies during Louisville, across from the Saddlebred Café! Celebrating its seventh decade in the industry, the Hartmeyer family continues to serve multiple generations of instructors, trainers and exhibitors. Jane was inducted into the Indiana Horseman’s Hall of Fame in 2013, joining her father, John, who was inducted posthumously in the inaugural class. And while the barn has not housed American Saddlebred show horses for many years, Jane‘s oldest son, John Ginther and his wife Anastasia now have a 2-year-old in training with Karin Folkers. Kentucky Chrome is slated to debut at Louisville this year, and again sister Andy Johns will host her art booth filled with commissioned portraits. That rascal Smokey really started something special 65 years ago.The late John and Betty Hartmeyer would be very proud of their family and its lasting service to and passion for the industry.

FREEDMAN HARNESS WHERE TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION
N
early as long as the horse has played an integral role in the story of man, so has the tradition of harness making. It is a long-established trade with historically consistent components- every harness has a wrap girth, every work harness needs a collar, every bridle has an overcheck. Being part of a trade with specific products that were successfully used for hundreds of years is vastly limiting for some- the weight of tradition stifling innovation and progress. Not for David Freedman. A sixth generation harness maker, David accepted the tradition passed down from his family and had the vision to turn it on its head, while maintaining the quality and detail defined by the proud craftsmen before him. In 1910, David’s grandfather Isaac Freedman immigrated to Toronto from Ivansk, Poland with his wife Gitel and children Charles, Harry, and Lily. The family later grew to include Rose in 1924 and Samuel in 1926. Isaac was a harness maker by trade. He supported his family through repairs and service of work harnesses, not unlike a car mechanic of today. People came to him with a problem and he efficiently fixed the harness, so they could get on with their day. Youngest son Samuel soon showed a passion for harness making, which Isaac’s employee Eddie Godfrey fostered, teaching Samuel the tools needed to surpass working harness repair and become a handmade show harness maker.

Samuel’s attention to detail and meticulous stitching earned him a place with the Samuel Trees Company, a huge operation employing over 100 people. Sadly, despite his talent, he only lasted three days. In the midst of WWII and widespread anti-Semitism, the company succumbed to social pressure not to employ Jewish Samuel.Though it left a lasting impression, the unfortunate experience did not deter him from the profession. He returned to his father’s harness shop and built on the Freedman family business that would eventually become internationally known and respected, creating a foundation for his own son, David to follow in his footsteps. By the time he was just thirteen, David spent every minute in the shop, learning as much as he could from his father and, importantly, observing at horse shows closely, the linchpin of his own future success. Paying careful attention to harness fit and listening to horsemen would become a lifelong asset. Upon adulthood, David stepped right into harness making as a profession. Just eighteen years old, he had no doubt what he wanted to do with his life. Counting his father as the greatest harness maker of his time, David knew he had large shoes to fill. He committed himself to honing his abilities over the next few years under Samuel’s watchful eye. Even today, the boutique in Midway, Kentucky displays a meticulously executed harness stitched by Samuel at just twelve years old and used for over half
