Bred by Harrison and Beverly Shiflet, the big, striking horse has been taking home world titles every year since he first entered Freedom Hall as a two-year-old in 2014. That year he took home his first world’s championship title by winning the two-year-old three-gaited class with Matt Shiflet. He was soon after sold to Elisabeth Goth where he won with trainer Neil Visser at the UPHA American Royal National Horse Show that fall. The following year, as a three-year-old, he won the fine harness class at Asheville and the three-yearold three-gaited at Midwest in 2015, where he caught the attention of current owner, Grace Arnold. “Grace had loved Token Kiss when he showed as a two-yearold, so when he became available the next year we were both thrilled to end up with him,” said Lilly. “We would like to thank Elisabeth Goth and Neil Visser for selling us a great horse, and credit his breeders Harrison and Beverly Shiflet for raising a World’s Grand Champion, along with Matt Shiflet, who gave him a great start and won his first world title.” Under Arnold’s ownership, Smith Lilly took over the training of Tango’s Token Kiss and the duo won the UPHA threegaited classic that year at Blue Ridge before hitting the green shavings. They came out on top of the three-year-old three-gaited division as World’s Champions and then Lilly made the decision to put Tango’s Token Kiss back into the open championship to try his luck against the older, more seasoned horses. While he finished a strong second in the class, he brought the crowd to their feet with his rousing performance. After a later disqualification of the first-place winner that year, Tango’s Token Kiss ended up with the winning title in that class, and all at just three-years-old. In 2016,Tango’s Token Kiss won the ASR Sweepstakes for fouryear-old three-gaited horses at the World’s Championship Horse Show. This season, Lilly made his debut with Tango’s Token Kiss at the Bonnie Blue Horse Show where he won two classes and then also showed at Roanoke Valley Horse

Show where they won the three-gaited open jackpot. The pair did not show again before the big dance. He was the winner of the three-gaited over 15.2 stake on Wednesday night, coming out on top of the six-horse class easily. In Saturday night’s stake, he entered the ring with authority, ears forward, and never took a step out of place. It appeared he got even stronger and better the second way, seemingly knowing he had to put it all on the line in order to come out on top of this competitive class. “He felt a little nervous Saturday night with the large crowd in Freedom Hall,” said Lilly. “But maybe I was the nervous one.” When his name was called as the winner, the elation was evident for Lilly, as he pumped his fist in the air, and a wide grin crossed his face. Lilly described his reaction as pure elation. While Tango’s Token Kiss has shown with great success since his very first time in the ring, he has evolved since his first world’s championship. “Besides being obviously stronger as he has matured, he has also become braver with age. He was pretty easily frightened when he was younger,” explained Lilly. As he became stronger over the years, his training routine has evolved as well. “This year we worked more on fitness than before, because he was mature and we thought his body could take more conditioning,” said Lilly. “He is eager to work every day, really a dream attitude. We gave him a break from training and turned him out for several months last fall, which seemed to suit him. We are planning a break after the season this year as well.” “He is a proud horse. He is friendly enough and likes people, but not needy or spoiled acting like some horses get. He loves his caretaker Janaye Lykins and really looks forward to his time with her.” “It’s easy to forget he is only five,” added Lilly. “He’s accomplished so much already. He has many great years ahead. He will probably make one more show this year, then have the winter out of training, with daily turn out in his paddock.”

y Callaway’s Northern Kiss, and out of a Drifter mare named Madame Cost A’Lot, Here Comes the Boom! was bred by High Hickory Farm in Simpsonville, Kentucky. The seven-year-old chestnut gelding has had great success in many divisions over the years; but it seems he has found his home in the fine harness

He was first shown as a three-year-old in the five-gaited division taking home the blue ribbon at the Shelbyville Horse Show in 2013. He then won the five-gaited three-year-old stallion and gelding World’s Championship that year. He was lightly shown as a young horse, not entering the show ring again until August of his junior year, where he was reserve world’s champion in the junior five-gaited division. He finished up the 2014 season in the three-gaited division. He turned heads again when in mid-season 2015, trainer Neil Visser entered into the open fine harness stake at Shelbyville horse show, where he finished second. That fall, owner Elisabeth Goth showed him for the first time, winning the ladies fine harness stake at the UPHA American Royal National horse show. He has been showing in the harness division since, where it’s clear he is well-suited.“He is extremely beautiful and elegant, yet powerful; a rare combination,” said Goth. “He goes a true park trot with animation and brilliance.Very few horses can put and hold their necks where he can and the harness division is a great way to highlight these attributes.”

Never one to shy away from showing against the trainers, Goth is familiar with showing on Saturday night.“It seems that over the years, Boomer has gotten stronger and braver; two necessary qualities for a Saturday night Stake.” “We have always thought he could be a contender in the Harness Stake, and felt early this year that he had a clear shot. He really rises to the occasion at Louisville, he knows it’s a special place,” she added. “He shows back really well, and came out of Monday night’s class ready to go.We also took into consideration our performances from last year and our drive in the qualifier, and we decided to go for it.” While he’s all business in the show ring, he’s good at conserving his energy. “He acts very tough and can make an ugly face, but loves to be loved on and get his treats,” Goth laughed.“He loves Constance and his Jolly ball. He’s also a big napper.” His training routine has been the same for quite a while as well. He is jogged or ridden, often in a double bridle, and mostly at the canter. Depending on the day, and his attitude, Here Comes the Boom! has many nicknames in addition to Boom and Boomer, he’s also fondly called, Boomie, Dragon Baby, Dragon Boy, Shnoomie, and Shnoom.

In 2016,“Boom” and Goth were crowned the ladies fine harness reserve world’s champions and while Neil took over the lines the early part of this season, showing him to wins at Asheville in the Open Fine Harness division, Goth was back in the driver’s seat for the World’s Championship Horse Show this year.

Winning one of the three World’s Grand Championship classes has been a dream come true for Goth. “Awe, joy, gratitude, excitement, contentment, inspirational, amazing,” she described her feelings. “For me, nothing has equaled the emotions of winning a big stake. It was truly an amazing experience, and I’m so grateful to Neil and the team!”

o Mary Gaylord, owning two-times World’s Grand Champion, Top of the Mark, is the icing on the cake of a lifetime of success in the Saddlebred industry. “Grover’s win this year was twice as good,” said Mary. “There was definitely pressure since he won it last year. I was even prouder this year, knowing I had raised a two-time World’s Grand Champion.” “It was amazing,” added Tré. “It is a great honor to have a horse that can win such a prestigious class two years in a row; especially with this horse who we have so much history and bond with.” “It was definitely different this year. Since you are defending a title you feel like there is more attention given to your horse and people are analyzing every show that you make. Mary never put any pressure on us but there is a level of pressure you put on yourself to achieve the success a second year.” The competition this year, as always, was tough, but Top of the Mark rose to the challenge. After Louisville last year, his shoes were pulled and he was turned out to just be a stallion again until this spring. “I didn’t ride him from the gaited stake at Louisville until probably February of this year,” explained Tré. “He had a nice long break. We started breeding some mares in January with him.” When they started to put him back to work, Grover was all business. “Over the past year he has gained strength and his body has filled out, but as he matures, he is refining his look and athletic ability,” said Tré. “His neck seems finer,” added Mary. “Every class he gets better and better. I think he’ll continue to improve,” said Tré proudly after his win last year. And it seems he was right. He showed up in the show ring for the first time this year at Indianapolis Charity in the gaited stake, easily winning in the class of four quality horses. Then at Lexington Junior League he topped the five-gaited stallion stake and the championship before heading into the World Championships. While there were only five entries in this year’s gaited stake, every one of them was exceedingly talented, and when the judges decided to put three horses back on the rail it was Top of the Mark, alongside CH Honey Badger and (SA) Kalarama’s Ultimate Choice. CH Honey Badger’s story was one for the story books; a tale of coming back from a near life-ending, and certainly career-ending injury. With Matt Shiflet in the irons for the Athanasuleas family, he won the five-gaited gelding stake on Wednesday night. The 14-year-old stallion from South Africa, Kalarama’s Ultimate Choice is always at the top of his game, and this year was no different. Tammy Devore won the UPHA National Championship with him last year for owner, Helen Rich, and was at the top of the gaited stakes at River Ridge and Rock Creek this year before heading into Louisville.

The crowd showed their support for all three quality entries, and after an exciting workout, it was Top of the Mark called out on top once again as the World’s Grand Champion. Top of the Mark is a Golden Creek horse through and through. Not only did Mary breed and raise the chestnut stallion, but she has owned his dam, broodmare hall of fame mare Carol Lynn, since the mare was seven-yearsold. Top of the Mark’s sire, CH Top Spool was a top gaited horse for many years with Mary, winning the amateur stallion and gelding world’s championship and amateur world’s champion of champions’ title in 1999. With bloodlines like that, Top of the Mark was destined to be great, and while he looked the part, his talent certainly didn’t develop overnight. Tré Lee, who gets all of Mary’s weanlings, first laid eyes on “Grover” when he was about six-months-old and broke him to lead. “We got him up as a yearling and he hadn’t dropped his testicles yet, we were going to castrate him, so we put him back out [in the field] and got him back up in the fall and he still hadn’t dropped, but he was huge. You couldn’t tell he was a stud at all by his attitude, and by the

The caretakers are the pulse of our industry. Their blood flows through the veins of every aspect of our business, and so much success is owed to them; from making sure the horses are turned out immaculately, to noticing any small sore; they take care of our precious cargo in both sickness and in health. Thinking of how vital they are to the achievements of these magnificent animals in the show ring, the wheels in my head started turning. I’m really excited to debut this new monthly feature, where we will be taking a look at some of these incredible caretakers that have been immersed in the Saddlebred business for many years.

hen Top of the Mark’s name was called as the winner of the five-gaited world’s grand championship this year, there were many integral people behind his success; from farriers to veterinarians, to the owners and trainers, and many people along the way. And while they are all vital in the process of developing a great champion, there is one man who may very well know the horse better than anyone else. When the heavy white gates swung open at the end of the class, and Tré Lee was called as the winner above the grand chestnut stallion, two people came running in. Emily Lee, to greet her husband, and alongside her was José Guido; the excitement and pride evident on his face which was filled with a wide grin and tears in his eyes. José Guido has been with “Grover” since the beginning. He was one of the first people to lay hands on the special colt; he began working with him as yearling, and has developed a unique relationship with the stallion over the last several years. How did you ﬁrst get involved with horses? My dad.

What’s a typical work day for you like? We start at 6am feeding and cleaning stalls. I start getting colts out to work and then around 7:30 I start getting horses in the cross ties. In the afternoon, depending on what time of year it is, I either work with weanlings getting them broke to lead, help with the vet with broodmares, or fix fence, or anything that needs worked on. I mow in the summer time as well. Who is your favorite horse you’ve cared for over the years? Why? My favorite horses that I have cared for besides Grover are Vegas Moon and Marching Orders. What is your favorite part of the job? My favorite part is working horses. Starting babies from the beginning. What is your most memorable moment – victory pass in the show ring? I would have to say running out in the ring when Grover won.

When did you ﬁrst start working with Saddlebreds? What age were you and what did you do? I started working with Jim McIntosh with my dad. I was 12 when I first started working with horses. I got lesson horses ready for people to ride. What barns and people have you worked for over the years? I worked for John Jones and Larry Bacon and Prospect Lane. When did you ﬁrst start working for Prospect Lane? In 2005 when Prospect Lane moved to Versailles. What roles do you have there? I do a little bit of everything. I take care of broodmares, deliver foals, break colts, take care of multiple champions, mow, build fence. Pretty much anything that needs to be done. You take care of Grover. Can you tell me a little bit about that? Grover has a personality all his own. He is a stud so he is pushy and can require patience, but he knows his job and likes to keep his routine.

What is the hardest part of the job? The Monday morning after Louisville. What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time for fun? I love to build things that no one has. I love to construct anything out of wood. I love to turkey hunt and fish. I have a 7-month-old daughter and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s obvious that as a groom you take great pride in your work, can you talk a little bit about that? Taking care of horses is what I love to do. I want to do better than anyone else. I give 110% and it feels good when someone tells me what a good job I have done. What do you hope for the future? My dream would be for myself to show a horse and win at Louisville.

What is his personality like? Grover is alert all the time. He thinks he is the man most of the time. What was it like to care for the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion? Can you talk about that a little bit? It is something that every groom wants to experience, and when you are there you don’t have the right words to describe it. It is the top of top. I get emotional. How long have you been taking care of Grover? Ever since he was a yearling. I broke him to start with. 100 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

time they came down, we decided we should just leave it.” Tré and Emily knew that they saw something special in him, as did Mary, but patience is a virtue, and it would be a long wait before they would see his true talent shine through. Tré saw greatness as early as his two-year-old year when he started racking him a bit, but as he started growing he would get clumsy and fall apart.They ended up turning him back out to let him grow up. “We got him back up by late fall and worked him all year and took him to Louisville just to work. He was very growthy and clumsy and being a stud it held him up maturity-wise. He would go through times of being exactly what you thought he would be and then two weeks later would be a mess.” “By the time his four-year-old year came around, he was working well, but he couldn’t keep up, and we couldn’t get him to fill out.” He won the junior five-gaited class at Harrodsburg that year, but he had just a glimmer of what he had shown at times at home. While anyone who had seen him work or at a show knew he was special; it was just moments of greatness. Grover wasn’t comfortable showing, he would clam up, and while he was game, he just never seemed to be his best at a show. A frustrating realization for a trainer and an owner, yet they continued to take their time, not willing to give up on him, since they had seen that potential at home. They started breeding him in 2015 for his five-year-old year and then after that, things started clicking. “Every show after that he made leaps and bounds in between,” recalled Tré. Those shows included winning the five-gaited stallion stake at Lexington and a good show at Louisville in 2015 to be in the ribbons. Yet, he was still physically immature looking compared to the other horses. They had a hard time keeping weight on him, and in turn getting him fit enough to compete with the older horses. “He’s never had to work a winter in his life,” explained Tré. After Louisville that year they turned him out and then started him back in February and he was different. It seems that Grover was finally ready to make his mark in the show ring. In 2016, Grover finally began showing at the comfort level he had at home. He won at Indianapolis Charity handily, and then it was on to Lexington Junior League where he won the stallion stake and the five-gaited championship before he headed to the World’s Championship Horse Show for the Big Dance in August. He won Monday night’s stallion stake and Saturday night’s Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship, giving Lee his first victory in the prestigious class.

He knows his job, we have a routine and he knows it.” “He has about 10 yearlings on the ground between our mares and outside mares and probably about that many weanlings. We will be getting the yearlings up here in the next month or so to start working with them. We are very excited to start out yearlings this year.They all look big and long-legged. Most of them have a star like him. He looks like he crosses very well with Northern Vegas mares,” said Tré.

They bred around 20 mares to Top of the Mark this year. “He continues to be able to separate breeding from working in his mind. He’s an easy stud to work around. He knows his job and when it’s time to get serious.”

“We have weanlings and yearlings by him, and they are all nice. They’re prettier then him, looking more like his dad, Top Spool. As far as his future, that’s up to him. If he acts like he wants to do this again next year, then he will. If he’d rather just be a stallion, then he will do that. It’s entirely up to him,” said Mary. “I’m going to ride him sometime this fall, just for fun. I won’t ever show him. Tré is the only one that will ever show him.”

“He is very kind,” added Tré.” His stall is right by where they shoe and mares walk by and he doesn’t make a peep. He is not at all mean, he likes to push you around a bit, and he’s

irst up, the unanimous win in the Harness Pony World’s Grand Championship was Mississippi Queen carrying Holli Hayes to the winner’s circle for John and Charlotte Wrather. Hayes said, “Winning with Missy was a highlight in my career.” She reflected that Missy “isn’t the easiest, so it was fulfilling to know you worked so hard and accomplished the goal intended.” Holli, your hard work paid off! Rich, Maureen, and Holli credit the Wrathers’ for letting them take the time needed to prepare Missy for the World’s Grand Championship and express their heartfelt thanks for their patience and understanding. Reserve in the class went to the very fancy pony, Mr. Naples, with Abel Vega driving for the Golden Creek Farm. Mr. Naples has racked up wins this year at Dixie Cup and Illinois State fair before being crowned the 2017 Reserve World’s Grand Champion. Next up, and no stranger to the roses,Twin Willow’s McDreamy winning his fifth consecutive Road Pony World’s Grand Championship with his best girl, Ali DeGray for Helen Rich. Team Majestic Oaks said about his Saturday night win, “When we showed Micky, we were all a little nervous. It is hard to accomplish winning four World’s Grand Championships, but he made one of his best shows ever that night to win his fifth!” Ali described her roadster mate as “wild” and said, “Micky doesn’t know what aging is, but he knows what showing is, so that’s wonderful to be a part of.” Reserve and no stranger to the winner’s circle himself were Prime Time’s Choice LF and Jeff McClean for the Golden Creek Farm. McClean has expertly driven this pony amassing championship ribbons from Lexington to Midwest.This team has proven themselves time and again in the deepest of competition. Last, but certainly not least, winning not only the Hackney Pony World’s Grand Championship, but also the Hackney

Hi Tech won this class eight years ago and was back to win another title. Maureen Campbell said, “He has never once disappointed me when he has shown. His attitude, heart, and zest for life are unbelievable.” Ali describes High Tech as, “perfect in every way.” She also says this pony is “the light of my life and the light of Maureen’s life with his kind personality and gameness.” No doubt this pony will always be one of the great ones in Hackney history. Reserve in this class, another Majestic Oaks entry, was Heartland Infinity and Holli Hayes for Sandra Surber. Infinity earned eight wins this season at shows like Spring Premier, Asheville, Blue Ridge, and Roanoke. Not a bad week for Holli with a World’s Grand Champion and Reserve World’s Grand Champion title! The perfect trifecta! The time, energy, and heart required to make that night happen must be exhausting and fulfilling all at the same time. Winning a World’s Grand Championship is what we all dream about. When March comes we are already anticipating August. It is what drives us to get up early to practice. It is the ‘noise’ in our head, in every class, as we make our way through the show season. That anticipation, excitement, and dedication is what brings us all together once a year on Saturday night in Freedom Hall whether to participate or spectate. The best of the breed, their owners and trainers gather to compete for the highest honors. To accomplish a perfect night, a trifecta, with all the circumstances it takes to get there, we can only imagine the gratefulness team Majestic Oaks must feel. BLESSED BEYOND BELIEF: MINER’S BLESSING AND HAILY MILLER

n early December, 2012, Haily Miller had just turned eightyears-old, and was just getting ready to step up to the show ring from academy for the first time. While she was a good rider; she was little and didn’t have much experience. She had first started riding while living in California when she was just four-years-old and when her family moved to the middle of horse country in July of 2011, she went from trail riding to the Saddlebreds on a whim. “We didn’t even know what kind of horses I had been riding in California, but when I took my first lesson on a Saddlebred, it was love at first sight,” recalled Haily. “Their beauty and elegance is like no other horse I have been involved with.” So, when Haily’s trainer, Stephanie Brannan got a call about a fouryear-old horse that had never been shown, or even ridden by anyone other than the trainer, it was a big gamble.

By Deveau Zubrod Kreitzer fit, the Miller family had a lot to talk about. “Stephanie said this could be the greatest thing, or it could be a really big mistake,” laughed Michele. But he was big, 16.2 hands, and they were looking for a horse that Haily could grow into as he was to be her only horse, her forever horse.“Even just walking him off, you could tell, even though he was scared to death of everything, he was kind and he wanted to do right. He was game and still looked at stuff, but you could tell he didn’t any of it with any type of intention to not do right,” recalled Stephanie. While he was big, and seemed like he would do the job, there were a lot of unknowns since he hadn’t shown, hadn’t ever had a child on him, and didn’t really know how to canter; which for the time being was the least of their worries.

Haily’s parents, Michele and Dr. Mark Miller, decided to move forward with the purchase, and on Christmas morning they drove to Wingswept Farm with Haily’s grandparents for a surprise reveal. Stephanie and Chris hid “Miner” in the barn and put green bows on him. “When I got there, they opened the barn doors and there stood Miner like a champ. When he saw me and I walked over to him, he wrapped that long neck around and hugged me so much. I got on him and was the happiest girl in the world. It was magical,” said Haily. And then began a winter of hard work to prepare both Haily and “Miner” for their first show. In April, it was still undecided if they were ready for their debut. They planned to show at Kentucky Spring Premier, but were still unsure if the pair should enter the show ring in the eight-and-under walk-and-trot class. The decision was finally made to let this child who had never shown out of academy, and Miner, who had never been shown, enter the show ring. Fifteen minutes later, they had won their first show. “I still remember Steph and Chris that day. They were not even sure if we were going to enter. I think there where about 15 people in the warm up ring supporting me. But, the decision was made to go for it. Miner took such good care of me,” said Haily. The pair kept improving as the year went on, and each time they entered the ring they would gain confidence as well. 114 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

Together they kept racking up blue ribbons from shows including Burlington Spring, Rock Creek, Lexington Junior League and Kentucky Fall Classic.They were third on the green shavings that year, and then ended the season in the Top Ten at Kansas City in the UPHA walk-and-trot national finals. 2014 got started off the same with success early in the season, but Haily and Miner were ready for a new challenge. After coming out of the ring from the walk-and-trot World’s Championship that year, and walking back down Stopher Walk, Stephanie looked at Haily and said, “tomorrow we canter, and in two weeks we go to Indianapolis All American in pleasure.” “As Miner began to improve, and so did my riding, we had started thinking about changing divisions,” explained Haily. “We chose show pleasure because Miner was perfectly mannered for that class and walked perfectly. So, we got to work and two weeks later at Indy, Miner and I entered the show ring and won. It was so exciting.” They finished out 2014, with Haily still riding as just a nineyear-old, in winning style at Kentucky Fall Classic, and then enjoyed much success in 2015 in the show pleasure division. In 2016, they won at Asheville and Rock Creek, were second at Lexington Junior League, and then won at Indy and Fall Classic. This year the pair again started out in the show pleasure

division, but at Southern Saddlebred Spring Fling they decided to change divisions yet again, and won the juvenile park division there. “My riding had continued to improve, and after evaluating pictures of Miner in the walk-and-trot class, we thought that the park division would be a great challenge for us,” said Haily.“In the park class Miner’s elegance and beauty can really be showcased, and to be honest I loved showing in a tux. It just feels so elegant and classy, and Miner loves it with his tail up. Our only reservation was that it’s a 17-and-under class and I am just showing as 12. But the decision was made and again off we went.” After Spring Fling, they won again at Asheville, where Miner gained his Champion status after the first class, then Rock Creek where they won both classes unanimously, and was second at Lexington before heading to the Kentucky State Fair. After a fourth-place finish in their split of the qualifiers, they made the performance of their lifetime to take home the reserve tri-color in the three-gaited park junior exhibitor championship. And all of this from his jockey who is just now showing as a 12-year-old. “Miner has been able to grow with me as a rider I think because we grew up together. He is a one in a million horse that was made for a time like this,” said Haily. “He just keeps growing and rising to each new challenge. It is like he has something to show everyone and I am the lucky one that gets to grow up with him. Stephanie also has a special connection with him and trains him in a way I think that is unique to just Miner. She gets him.”

With his perfect ears, and his long seahorse neck, Miner’s Blessing is unmistakable. He is photogenic and charismatic, and while he’s solid chestnut, you can’t overlook him in the show ring. It seems everywhere he shows, he gains a fan club, he draws in the crowd and everyone seems to remember him. “Miner’s personality is really fun, he is a very curious horse and sometimes acts like a regular ole horse, like Miner, but when he enters the show ring he becomes Miner’s Blessing,” said Haily.“He comes alive and with each pass gets more and more animated and full of himself. He loves to show everyone what he has to show and he knows when he has had a good class. I love to see that side of him. At home, he is so sweet and we just hang out in his stall sometimes and get each other.” “He’s positive that he actually got her for Christmas,” laughed Stephanie. “He always wanted to get a kid of his own. He looks at her with those big, googly eyes. Their relationship is amazing. He has his own idiosyncrasies and quirks; but he’s down to business when he goes in the show ring and he gives 110-percent every time, no matter what.” Although Miner’s Blessing has indeed become Haily’s forever horse, her brood has grown over the years as well. She also owns Roxie in Vegas and they compete in the 13-and-under five-gaited class, and she has a lesson horse named Totally Irresistible, Izzy, who she enjoys taking on trail rides.

Favorite destination: I love to go to Florida and hang out on the beach. Hobbies: I really don’t have many other hobbies because I am at the barn so much. I do enjoy golf whenever I can. One thing no one knows about you: I was born in California.

“Horses have made me who I am today by teaching me to stay in the moment and tuned into what they are feeling, seeing or thinking. To stay ahead of what might occur and always be prepared. They have also taught me patience. Things don’t always happen when and how I might want, but I’ve learned to enjoy the journey and enjoy every moment I have with them. Another thing they have taught me is that if I want to be seen or noticed I have to make a plan and make that happen, like I have to in the show ring.” Haily is at the barn every day except Sunday and Monday’s. She comes early and stays late. For her, the success is the result of lots of hard work and time at the barn. “We have a lot of fun every day, even though we are training,” said Haily. I like to help with lessons also, and all the chores and duties at the barn. During those times, we have special moments together.” “She’s fantastic,” reiterated Stephanie. “She’s at the barn all the time, she helps with lessons and does ride behinds, gets horses ready. Whatever we ask her to do. And she is a quick study. If you tell her to do something she’s able to do it even if it’s not something she’s practiced. She puts in the hours on top of being talented and helps all the other kids too.” The idea of a young girl showing a young horse is nothing new, so that in itself isn’t groundbreaking, but over the past five years, Haily and Miner have grown together, gotten stronger 116 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE

and better, and stepped up each year. It seems that walk-andtrot mounts are typically older horses that have ‘been there and done that’ in the show ring, so it’s certainly rare that you see a walk-and-trot horse turned park horse. But, that horse is Miner’s Blessing, and he is indeed the blessing of a lifetime for the Miller family. “That was what we were hoping for when we got him,” said Stephanie.“I didn’t know it would turn out as great as it has, but he had the mindset to think really good and he’s just spooky enough to really keep his ears up.When we first looked at him he was wearing plates, so we didn’t know he would be able to use his legs the way he does now.” So now, in 2017, little Haily’s walk-and-trot horse is a reserve world’s champion of champions in the junior exhibitor park division. While the future is unknown, it’s certain this team will continue to keep getting better. “My goal is to win at Louisville with Miner, and to grow with every ride, and learn from every experience that the show ring provides.” “I can’t describe the amount of training, love and support that has gone into this duo. Though I feel it is a journey that is only beginning,” reiterated mom, Michele. “My heart smiles every time I think of this blessing and I hold much gratitude for everyone’s continued support. Thank you all, especially Stephanie and Chris, for being true dream makers. You are appreciated and loved more than you will ever know.”
