A NEWCOMER’S GUIDE TO THE AMERICAN SADDLEBRED After a successful career in the British Royal Air Force, Ian and Ann McPhee arrived in Texas in 2009 where they made their home. Ian, a keen horseman, quickly discovered the American Saddlebred, a breed of horse with which he was unfamiliar before arriving in the USA. It was not long before Ian was riding and driving in competitions across Texas and beyond with his first Saddlebred ‘Bagger Vance’. Upon graduating from the Academy Classes (where he was regularly beaten by 12 year olds!) he moved into the fine harness and three-gaited divisions. The shows were exciting and, as a newcomer, very confusing. Just as he thought he understood what was going on, another class would be introduced to the show that would leave him puzzled. Ian decided to capture all that he could and produce a small booklet to help other newcomers to the exciting world of the American Saddlebred. The “Newcomers Guide to the American Saddlebred” is not intended to be the definitive guide to the sport, rather Ian’s personal observations and recommendations to help new entrants to the sport understand what is going on around them. The Newcomer’s Guide offers the uninitiated an introduction to barn visits and lessons, attire, a glossary of terms, horse show divisions and specific class descriptions. It also paves the way for the decision to purchase that first horse and explains what one may expect in expenses associated with horse ownership and showing. Ian’s enthusiasm for the sport is unarguable and he has, in this booklet, shared his passion while providing a concise, 20 page guide to what can be quite unfamiliar territory to the novice. During his time as the treasurer of the Texas American Saddle Horse Association, Ian came to appreciate the outstanding work undertaken by Saddlebred Rescue and decided that all the profit from the booklet would go to them to assist in furthering their work. The cost of the booklet is $10 (plus P&H) and can be ordered through Glencairn Saddlebreds web site at www.Glencairnsaddlebreds.com

GISELLE
fter last season, owner Karen Waldron had no idea if Giselle would ever compete again. And one to always put the animal first, she had come to terms with that idea, thankful for the years she had with the wonderful mare. But, Giselle had other plans. With true grit and determination, the mare fought hard, and showed both Waldron and long-time trainer, Larry Ella, that she wasn’t done yet. “Hackneys are endurance animals,” said Waldron. “They have a great deal of strength in their bodies and they do not break down easily. The ones that are extremely well-bred just go on. Giselle on the bottom side is a Vindicator granddaughter and she gets all of her endurance from him.” At 13-years-old, the expressive daughter of Mark of Excellence brought home her sixth World’s Grand Championship title at Louisville this year, bringing her world’s championship total to an incredible thirteen.Waldron bred and raised the filly out of My Sweet Georgia Brown, her successful pleasure pony.“Georgia is by my great amateur harness pony, Vindicator, so it was a multi-generational creation here. Larry and I chose certain mares to cross with Mark of Excellence, and they have all turned out to be wonderful for us. I breed very selectively and not often.” Giselle began her training at Bent Tree Farm in Virginia and they originally had planned on going the road pony route, but after just two classes in the Junior Road Pony division, it was clear that Giselle had other plans.

Every day she is a star.” So, with Giselle’s approval, they headed into Louisville this year, hopeful for a great show, and perhaps once again the title of World’s Grand Champion. “Through all the different years, I stand there on the rail watching the mare, and I am so focused on her that it seems like it’s the exact same experience each year,” explained Waldron. “I’m watching how emotional Larry is because of how he feels about this mare, and it’s just an amazing experience. Everyone around her has an incredibly deep relationship with this mare and we are incredibly blessed to have this opportunity.” So, the title of the 2018 World’s Grand Champion Hackney Harness Pony means just as much as that first title to owner, Karen Waldron. And every title along the way has had the same impact, the same excitement and the same exhilarating feeling for both her and trainer, Larry Ella.
Back at the stalls, one might notice a small, strange looking doll adorned with ribbons. The doll first made an appearance the first year Ella showed Giselle. “Dolly was laying in her stall door at the Ontario Hackney Futurity show the first year Larry had her,” explained Waldron. “We came back from the ring and this doll was there. It was extremely weird and creepy, but we all decided it was She was striking and memorable to anyone whose eye she caught. for a reason thus she went in the harness bag and has traveled with Watching her enter the show ring, she even looked a bit wild and Giselle ever since.”They hang her on the stall door at shows. He has been the only one to her up and down in the stall. As the years have sit in the driver’s seat for every single drive. “Larry stays very focused gone by, Waldron has also adorned “Dolly” with “Dolly” is Giselle’s good luck charm and and calm when with her,” said Waldron. He didn’t get a break last year since know how we would end up. Once we were in the ring in the we were figuring him out, so we will give him a sixty-day qualifier, I could tell he was really good. he Daily Lottery needs no introduction. He’s worn the roses at Louisville for eight consecutive years in four different divisions. With 18 appearances on the green shavings, he’s garnered an incredible 15 World’s Championship titles.
Hodge about it and he got with Misdee and James [Miller], and we made arrangements to go look at him. Misdee is an amazing owner to work with and train horses for. She’s a true horsewoman, and she understands the process and what it takes. She is extremely patient, and is willing to wait on a horse until they are ready.”
The chestnut gelding by Sultan’s Great Day and out of the CH Will Shriver mare, Callaway’s Lady Lottery, first graced our presence as a three-year-old in 2007 with Mark Turner in the irons for owner Mandy Martin. Bred by Penny Lane Farm, “Dan” quickly gathered a growing fan club. In 2008, Martin campaigned the striking horse, and together they turned heads as she piloted him against all the big-name trainers in the Five-Gaited Junior Stallion and Gelding class at the World’s Championship Horse Show. Together, they took home that title and the Five-Gaited Junior World’s Champion of Champions.
Lockhart first showed The Daily Lottery last fall at The American Royal, winning the Five-Gaited stake and Grand Championship, before settling in for a winter to prepare for the upcoming show season. They planned for Lockhart to campaign the gelding for the 2018 show season, and then for Misdee to show him the following year.
The Daily Lottery continued his winning streak the following year for owners, High Hickory Farm, and Gabe Deknatel in the irons. From 2010-2013, the team won the Five-Gaited Amateur Gelding Stake each year, three of those years wearing the roses in the championship. In 2014, he was purchased by The Hawley Family and trainer Peter Cowart showed the gelding in the Gaited Stake, winning the horse’s first World’s Grand Championship.
The team started out the 2018 show season at Asheville in May, winning the Open Stallion and Gelding Stake and Championship and made one more winning appearance the following month at Shenandoah Classic Horse Show before heading into the World’s Championships.
While he stands just over 15-hands tall, his stature in the ring is that of a much larger horse. His powerful gait propels him over the ground, and while his looks could be considered plain, he is anything but that in the show ring. “Dan has been in great hands all his life,” added current trainer, Daniel Lockhart. “He has been surrounded by great horseman, both trainers, and caretakers. He is a show horse through and through and has the biggest heart.” At the end of the 2014 season, he was sold again, and trainer Mark Turner was excited to get the horse back under his care for Eleanor Rainbolt Forbes to show in the Junior Exhibitor division. Together they won nearly every class they went in over the next two years.
In the Wednesday night Gelding Stake, Lockhart piloted The Daily Lottery over seven other top contenders, and when it came time for the Saturday night class, Lockhart felt he was at the top of his game. With just four entries in the Stake, there was no shortage of talent. The reigning Five-Gaited Grand Champion from 2017 and 2016, Top of the Mark and Tre Lee took home the Stallion Stake on Monday evening and were prepared to give Lockhart and The Daily Lottery a run for their money. Each pass the crowds got louder and louder, and it was clear that both horses have a huge fan club. As they came into the lineup, the cheers for Dan were resounding, and as the cards were turned in, Lockhart hoped that they would come out on top.
“The plan is for me to finish the year out with him at Kansas City and then for Misdee to start showing him next year,” explained Lockhart. “He will definitely get some welldeserved down time this winter.”
“I feel like every time we showed this season he was a little better, and I feel like he peaked at Louisville,” said Lockhart.
“The atmosphere in Freedom Hall for that class is like nothing I have ever experienced before. Dan felt incredible, he was right there for me every step. He thrived on the crowd participation,” Lockhart recalled excitedly. The victory gave Lockhart his first Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship “I realized what a great opportunity this was, so I told Mr. title. Lockhart has experience winning a Grand Championship “My good friend, Mark Turner, had the horse and he told me that the owners were reluctantly thinking about selling him,” said Daniel Lockhart, who works the gelding now, under Kalarama Farms direction.

CARING FOR A CHAMPION: JOSÉ “MAESTRO” MEJIA OF KALARAMA FARM
How did you first get involved with horses? I came to Kalarama and asked Mr. Hodge for a job. He asked me if I had any experience with horses and I said just what I’ve seen in the movies. He didn’t give me the job right away, three weeks later a groom left so he called me and gave me a chance.
José Mejia and WGC CH The Daily Lottery
When did you first start working with Saddlebreds? In 1995, I was 33 years old. What barns and people have you worked for over the years? I started here at Kalarama in 1995, and after three or four years I left and worked for Bob Ruxer, Bill Schoeman and Rudy Lewis. I trained horses and ponies at Majestic Oaks before Rich Campbell was there. I came back to Kalarama I think around 2002. What roles do you have? I take care of five horses, The Daily Lottery, The Brightest Blue, Live Action, Smart Fortune and Kalarama’s New Moon. I do anything they ask me to do. I also drive the truck and trailer and the tractors, fix tractors and equipment. Mr. Hodge nicknamed me the “general manager.” What’s it like to take care of The Daily Lottery? He’s a nice horse. If you treat him good, he acts good. If you treat him bad, he’s a pain in the butt. He knows me, so he is very well-behaved in the stall with me. When he knows it’s close to show time, he is a little more wound up. He knows the difference. What was it like to care for the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion? As much as a trainer wants to win the World’s Grand Championship, so do I. I wanted Dan and Danny to win that class very badly. I felt like I accomplished a life goal.

I’ve taken care of the Fine Harness, Road horse and FiveGaited World’s Grand Champions; now I just need the Three-Gaited World’s Grand Champion and I will retire. How long have you been taking care of The Daily Lottery? One year What is a typical work day like for you? I get to Kalarama around 5:30am and water all the horses. Then I clean my five stalls. After that I clean up the main barn and once that looks good I start getting my horses ready. I usually start with Dan for my first horse. From there Danny tells me which horses to get next and what he wants to do with them. After I finish with all my horses, I water again and clean the place up. I drag and rake the main barn. I get some lunch and then come back at 3:00pm to water horses
again. Around 10pm in the summer I come back to the barn and water and check all the horses. What is your favorite horse you have cared for over the years? My favorite is Dan, but I treat all my horses equally. If it’s a good horse or a bad horse, I treat them all the same. I treat them all like superstars. What is your favorite part of the job? My favorite part of the job is seeing my horses get better and better every day. What has been one of your most memorable moments? My most memorable moment was definitely Dan’s WGC victory pass at Louisville. What is the hardest part of your job? The hardest part of my job is when something is not
right with a horse one day, whether they are sick or hurt, and I go home and think about it and really hope they are okay the next day or soon. Do you have any funny stories? One year at Asheville I was walking a horse back from the ring and his front foot caught the back of my foot and I fell flat on my face. What are your hobbies? In my free time I buy and fix cars and resell them. What do you hope for the future? Mr. Hodge has always provided a place for me to live, but in the future, I would love to own my own house. I hope that one day I will get to take care of a World’s Grand Champion Three-Gaited horse. I also hope that I can see Dan win the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship again one day.

I
was really fortunate to grow up in a family where showing horses was a way of life. My parents have always had Saddlebreds, and of course, my sister is a trainer. I have been passionate about photography from a very young age. I was in high school when I started actually taking photos of horses and spending time trying to capture candid moments at horse shows. Photography has always been a way for me to freeze time and really see the emotion and beauty in a particular moment. I am truly blessed to have been able to develop a career doing what I love. My inspiration has always been a connection, whether between a mare and foal or a horse and rider, to me that is where the magic is. My business is multi faceted; not only am I an in-ring photographer, I also work for other in-ring photographers (shooting candids.) I also love doing portrait shoots, farm sessions, and I recently debuted my first Equine fine art photography collection. My first gallery show was in June of this year, and it was literally a dream come true. Brielle Cotterman helped me to bring this dream to life and has assisted in publicity and promotion of my business and my collection. She is a dear friend of mine, and she has always encouraged me to share my work and talent with others. My perspective has always been different, and I have always viewed my work as art. However, through my fine art collection, I have been able to share it with a much broader audience. I capture the uniqueness or most spectacular qualities of my subject and share those from my own perspective. Thankfully, I have had an overwhelmingly positive response, and have even done a few small retail setups at shows. I am currently going through a website re-design to streamline all scheduling of farm and portrait shoots, as well as online ordering for my fine art

pieces on several mediums. The great thing about my fine art collection, is that I now have clients all over the world. The idea of my work influencing people and their homes or places of work makes me so proud. I am also honored to have recently been featured in Authority Magazine and Thrive Global as an influential photographer of this era. Receiving recognition beyond the horse industry is always a great feeling! I have had the opportunity to shoot all over the world; South Africa, New Zealand, Peru, and numerous places here in the states. I love having the ability to capture wildlife in their natural habitat and share their spirit with other parts of the world. Of course my time in South Africa was my favorite of all international shoots, because of the overwhelming beauty of the landscapes and access to so many incredible animals. One of my goals is to continue to expand my wildlife fine art collection over the next year. I am currently the official photographer of the World Cup, TASHA, American Road Horse and Pony Show, and the Twin Rivers Charity. I am in negotiations with additional galleries to feature my equine fine art photography collection, and I am scheduling farm and portrait shoots for the rest of 2018 and into 2019. My love for animals and my passion for photography has blended into a wonderful career that constantly keeps me challenged and looking forward to new and exciting opportunities to share my perspective with the world. layna Applegate has always been a fierce competitor in the show ring, and already enjoyed much success at her young age, but no one, not even herself, expected her to take home SEVEN world’s championship titles in one week. Three of which came in the same day. “This has by far been the best week of my life,” said Alayna.
During the Lexington Junior League Horse Show that summer, her horse was hurt, and it was then that Alayna got her first of many catch rides, when the Applegate family was offered the champion equitation mare, CH-EQ A Sweet Sensation for her first trip on the green shavings. She came away with the World’s Championship title in the 8-and-under walk-and-trot class. The following season, in 2013, she grabbed that title again, along with the win in the championship for that division, aboard Amber Lager. Her last walk-and-trot horse, and probably her most She first started riding in 2011 when she was six-years-old after memorable, was Blue Over You, who she first competed with her grandmother, Corkey Wagner, gave her a package of riding during her 9-year-old season. Together they won at Lexington lessons to a local barn a few miles from their house in Ewing, Junior League horse show and the World’s Championships, in Kentucky. The barn had quarter horses, and while she enjoyed addition to taking home the title in the UPHA 10-and-under the lessons, it wasn’t long before they decided to try out some Walk and Trot Finals. The team moved up to cantering the other disciplines as well. The Applegate’s quickly discovered following season and enjoyed a stellar season together before that Saddlebreds were their first and true love. Alayna’s family he was sold that fall. This year she is also doing a lot of catch-riding. She shows Absolutely Sassy, owned by the Grom family in five-gaited, CH Royal Crest’s Rhinestone Cowboy, owned by Doug Fiola and Jessica Lindstrom, in show pleasure, and Carl JNR, owned by Rachel Seifert, in country pleasure. Each of the horses she shows are very different, and their personalities reflect their uniqueness. “Prince is very loveable and his favorite thing to do is show, he is also all about his strawberry frosted doughnuts. Reed is like riding a very smooth sports car, his favorite thing to do is to get down the rail, which is also my favorite thing to do,” exclaimed Alayna. “Sassy is the cutest, spunkiest girl in the world; Cowboy is absolutely beautiful, no matter in the stall or the show ring, and he too loves his treats. Hardee “Carl JNR” is a flashy youngster and I have enjoyed being his first junior exhibitor partner.”

At the 2018 World’s Championship Horse Show, aboard her personal mount, Prince of Prowlin’, Alayna won the Kentucky Riders Equitation Championship, along with the world titles in both the 13-and-under three-gaited qualifier and championship. She was the 13-and-under Country Pleasure World’s Champion with Carl JNR, and Reserve World’s Champion of Champions in that division. Royal Crest’s Rhinestone Cowboy was her partner for the 13-and-under Show Pleasure World’s Championship. She also claimed the World’s Champion of Champion title in the Junior Equitation division aboard CH-EQ Reedann’s Heir to Glory, along with the 12-13-year-old World’s Championship. And the icing on the cake was that all three of her equitation titles were by unanimous decision. “It was a complete dream week,” exclaimed Alayna. “I am still on cloud-nine, never in a million years did I ever dream to win seven World’s Championships in one week, let alone three in one day! I am so thankful to my amazing trainers and family for helping get me to this point, I could have never done it without them. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to share these lifetime memories with such special horses.” Like any young, horse crazy kid, Alayna spends as much time at the barn as she can. hard work. Her dedication to honing her skills is something many riders far beyond her years never have. She is lucky that her family also has horses on their farm in Ewing, and her mother runs Westwind Farm, along with the help of Alayna’s grandparents, Jerry and Corkey Wagner. Alayna spends every day with the horses, as soon as she gets home from school she heads to the barn to help with the lesson horses. She is a self-proclaimed barn rat. “When I go to Desmar, I usually ride three to four lesson horses a day, typically a lunge lesson, a transition lesson, and at least one, sometimes two pattern lessons.” She hopes to be involved with horses for a lifetime, and wants to be a horse trainer (at Desmar Stables) when she grows up. Her dedication and work ethic are something rarely seen in any person, much less someone that’s just a freshman in high school. She’s grateful for the horses and the opportunities they have given her. “They have taught me how to work hard, push myself to be my absolute best, commitment and dedication, to work with others, and more importantly given me confidence. Horses are truly good for my soul.” While Alayna doesn’t really have time for any hobbies besides

the horses, she is involved with FFA (Future Farmers of America) and 4-H. She has a 4-H show pig as a project every year. “We usually get our pigs around the middle to end of April; they are babies when we get them so we get to watch them grow, which is always fun,” explained Alayna. “We take them to one or two shows throughout the summer and then we have our local 4-H Show and sale in mid-September. When we sell our pigs, we get usually make a nice profit. A few years ago, at the American Royal horse show, I found a show coat that I really wanted, but I didn’t need it, so instead of my mom buying it, I paid for it with my pig money! So, the hard work really does pay off in the end.” The blue coat (which of course is also her favorite color) has been quite lucky for Alayna, as she’s now won four world titles wearing it.“When the day comes that I have to say good bye to my blue coat, it will probably live on a mannequin in my room,” she laughed. While Alayna could never dream of experiencing another World’s Championship week like the one she had this year, she hopes to enjoy continued success in her future riding career. She will be showing in all of the equitation finals this fall, and hopes to have success as a 13-year-old competing with the older age group riders.
